Forensic Geoscience BS Degree
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
This degree path is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in forensic sciences. The major concentration and minor, hosted by the Geological Sciences department, provide a rigorous applied education appropriate for students who wish to move directly into the forensic and analytical sciences after graduation. Concentration courses focus on essential interdisciplinary skills and experiences that are currently sought by employers in these fields. For instance, classes include forensic microscopy, forensic instrumentation, forensic sedimentology, forensic geophysics, environmental forensics, and advanced crime scene investigation. With this coursework, career opportunities include forensic laboratories, crime scene investigation, or graduate studies in forensic science.
WORK PROSPECTS
Forensic geologists are a type of forensic science technician who aid in criminal investigations by gathering and analyzing evidence. Forensic science technicians work on crime scenes and in laboratories to record observations, collect evidence, reconstruct crime scenes, and run analyses on collected samples to answer questions raised by the legal system. Forensic geologist specifically analyzes minerals, oil petroleum, and other soil evidence found in or around the crime scene. This evidence can be used to answer questions related to the time and environment of the crime. Questions about criminal activities in an outdoor environment may need a forensic geologist to trace earth material evidence.
Forensic scientists are required to obtain a BS degree. Although the majority of forensic technicians work for local governments, forensic geologists have the opportunity to be employed by state/ federal organizations or specific laboratories supporting local governments. The field of forensics is set to grow in the next decade.
Forensic Science Minor
Are you fascinated by how law enforcement uses science to solve crimes but not committed to changing your major? Consider declaring a Forensic Science minor. This minor is open to all students and is an excellent complement to a major in criminal justice, psychology, and sociology.
