President’s Message Here’s to all the best that 2019 can bring! I am thankful so far that mother nature has been dealing our area a fairly good hand. Lots of excitement with the beginning of the calving season and what our matings will yield. The Association is still working on genetic enhanced EPD with the American Association. Progress has been slow, but I am hopeful that we will have some real progress to report by the AGM. Speaking of the AGM we are shifting our location back east for 2019! Please find those details in further pages and plan to attend! Please don’t hesitate to share any questions, comments or concerns with myself or the board. It is our pleasure to aid in breed advancement for all! Hope to visit will all of you somewhere down the road! Pete Watkins

Greetings from the office

I hope your 2019 started well and calving season is well underway. Good luck for this very demanding time of the year. Memberships are due now, please send payment to the office. We accept payment by e-transfer and cheques. As always, remember that all walking sires need DNA on file at the office. Make sure you collect DNA while the animals are close to the farm and before you turn them out to the pasture. For members on breed plan I will need updated inventory forms back in the office as soon as possible so your invoice has the proper number of animals charged for. Remember, there is new merchandise available for you to purchase. As well check out our website and/or Facebook once in a while for updates on the Association. I hope to see many of you at the Annual General Meeting in June in Quebec. Heidi Voegeli-Bleiker

This means for the Salers Association of Canada: - BioBank (samples) will stay in Canada - Sample reception and preparation, DNA extraction and data analysis (i.e: parentage) will be conducted at Neogen Canada - Neogen Canada will be located at the same premise as Delta Genomics (for about a year) - Pricing in Canadian Dollars - Same IT infrastructure - Pricing will for the majority of services remain similar, but value of service will increase, basic SNP parentage will be a minimum of 200 SNP’s. - Genotyping will occur at GeneSeek in Nebraska - Aiming for a 21 calendar day turnaround time on all testing from Neogen Canada IN SUMMARY: Neogen Canada will be a genomic service provider in Canada / Delta Genomics will pivot its operations to focus on the delivery and application of genomic data.

By 2018 Chair Tammi Ribey “CBIC 2018 was a huge success. Over 500 attendees converged on London, Ontario this past week to participate in CBIC,” says 2018 CBIC Chair Tammi Ribey. “The event included farm tours, though provoking speakers, informative panels, cattle handling demos and a tradeshow. Our theme for the conference was Driving Demand and through the program and the networking, members of the beef industry found many ways to drive demand.” 8

2018 Annual General Meeting The 2018 Annual Meeting was held in Saskatoon on June 22-24th at the Park Town hotel and conference centre. The weekend kicked off with the members gathering for an evening of socializing on Friday night. Gar Williams officially greeted the members in attendance to the AGM on Saturday morning. A productive meeting was held with questions asked from members in attendance. Several by-law amendments were discussed and voted on. The board of directors elected Peter Watkins as the new president, Werner Grundke as vice-president and Travis Depalme as treasurer. New on the board is Rick Grudeski from Vista, Manitoba. On Sunday the group visited the Modern Art Gallery in Saskatoon and in the afternoon some members went to AGW Salers (Gar Williams) for a farm tour. Many thanks to Gar and Marie-Anne Williams for organizing the event and hosting the group on Friday night for cocktails and appetizers.

International Salers Delegation

INTERNATIONAL SALERS FEDERATION CONVENTION AT SOMMET DE L’ÉLEVAGE, Clermont-Ferrand / France Oct. 3rd to 5th - 2018

TWENTY-SEVEN years ago, the SOMMET DE L’ÉLEVAGE (LIVESTOCK SUMMIT) opened its doors in Clermont-Ferrand (France), at the heart of the biggest area of natural rangeland in Europe, with a mission to showcase the Massif Central’s native beef breeds. Twenty-seven years later, already the undisputed world-leading trade show for the beef sector, the SOMMET DE L’ÉLEVAGE has also steadily carved out a position as a leading national forum for dairy breeders and an exceptional showcase for French know-how in livestock production and breed genetics.

Salers - the 4th biggest beef breed in France was headlining the exhibition with its national championships and its 400 best specimens competing for bestof-breed at the Zénith ring arena. The International Salers Federation, which now has 24 Member Associations in 20 Countries, hold its tri-annual convention during the SOMMET. Visits to Salers farms were organized before and during the event. It was the best and largest meeting of Salers Breeders that has ever been seen. In 2021 the tri-annual Salers Federation Convention will be held in Mexico.

Commercial Breeder of the Year Bruce & Jocelyn Cody & Jenna Kirby & Stefanie Wheelans Tilston, Manitoba

The Salers influence is an important factor in the Wheelans’ farm success in the cattle business, which led the Canadian Salers Association to recognized the Tilston, Manitoba family with the Commercial Breeder of the Year award. Bruce and his wife Jocelyn Wheelans have farmed near the corner of both the Saskatchewan and U.S. borders since 1972, raising sons Cody and Kirby on the same place that Bruce’s parents settled. As the third generation takes the lead on the farm now, the commercial herd numbers close to 160 head. Calving starts near the end of February, running for 65-75 days, wrapping up before spring field work. Steer calves are sold the last weekend of November, through Heartland Livestock Sales in Virden, usually weighing in the 750-pound range off grass and some creep feed. The family gives the heifers a bit more time to grow and in mid-February, herd replacement selections are made. One more sort in the fall, sees a few marketed as bred heifers, with twenty new females going back to the herd annually. The Wheelans also have 4500 acres in dryland grain production, growing wheat, beans, peas, canola, oats and feed barley for nearby hog producers. Recently, they’ve also been trying some corn for grazing. Bruce has been impressed with the Salers breed for a long time, and in 1991, even began raising a few purebreds. “We were trying to get some feet and udder in our herd, as well as the mothering aspect,” recalled Wheelans. “My brother-inlaw had Salers, and I’d watched his cows. I liked how those nice little calves got up and going.” KCJB Salers operated until BSE devastated Canadian livestock markets, and the economics of the purebred business was less inviting. Plus their sons were busy with off-farm work then. So Bruce and Jocelyn, who was also a nurse, focused on their commercial cattle. But they always maintained a Salers base. That’s also when the grain side of the farm grew. When both Cody and Kirby decided to return and be involved with the farm full-time, they took over the bulk of the cattle work and rebuilt the numbers, while Bruce says he continues to ‘dabble’ with a few head of his own still.

14

Salers Association of Canada 2019

“ The biggest thing for us is the cash flow. Cattle have been good for us, because you can always sell a cow. “ Plus our land includes some creek and ravine areas that are iffy to grain farm.” Wheelans is always impressed with how the Salers can cross with virtually any other breed, and still have their qualities come through strongly. “The biggest thing is when the neighbors like the looks of our replacement heifers,” he smiled. “That’s the ultimate compliment.” Wheelans turned over their entire herd in 2011, keeping fifty of the best heifers as the nucleus. Today they use Salers bulls on the heifers for the all-important calving ease, incorporating Angus, Gelbvieh and Charolais bulls on their Salers based cow herd. There’s no shortage of mothering ability in the Salers-bred cows either, with Cody and Kirby commenting while some breeds’ cows offer ‘skim’ milk, Salers’ have whole milk for their calves. The hardiness and ‘do-ability’ the Salers blood brings to the herd is another asset. Whether the cows are standing and eating corn, or being trailed around, they’re all able to walk, with good feet. Wheelans also notes replacements coming off of their heifer crop stand tall among the prospects each year, often securing a spot in the main herd. “There’s a misconception the Salers need to be crossed with another breed. When we sell our calves, the purebred steers sell on their own strength. They take no back seat (to the crossbreds).” Richard and Gill Grudeski put forward the Wheelans operation for the Commercial award. Grudeski Salers of Vista, MB have been a source of bulls for the family since 2011, along with a few other breeders like Harbrad Salers of Ogema, Saskatchewan. Bruce and Jocelyn enjoy the family aspect of their farm, working closely with Kirby and his wife Stefanie; and Cody and his wife Jenna, plus three grandchildren. “Both spouses are interested in it, and the kids are too.” “It was an honor to be nominated, let alone winning,” emphasizes Bruce Wheelans. “Any time your peers look at your cattle and are impressed, that’s pretty good for an ol’ cattle farmer. To be recognized by an association as big as the Salers is something. We’re just trying to make a living and when some one comes along and recognizes us, it’s pretty special.” Salers Association of Canada 2019

Breeder Of the Year Richard & Dianne Andersen DynaRich Salers, Eckville, AB

by Dianne Finstad

It’s always been about quality for Salers breeders Richard & Dianne Andersen. Any cattle coming off their farm have to well represent the DynaRich Salers name. Such dedication to excellence led the Canadian Salers Association to honour Andersen’s with the prestigious Breeder of the Year award. Richard and Dianne have always liked cattle with thickness and performance, and the Salers breed has delivered. “We advertise our bulls as ‘Thick Butt Bulls’”, states Richard. “For the past 40 years, it’s been a priority for our bulls and females. More lbs = more $$$ in the beef business.” The Salers have provided other key traits as well. “We like their vigor the calves have at birth,” adds Dianne. “We don’t have to fight with the calves to suck, our cows have excellent udders and dark coloured feet. Our cows show estrus usually within 30 days after calving.” “We also strive for docility.” “Longevity is very important to us. We have some cows whom are still producing excellent calves at 20 years old. We have great-great-granddaughters going back to our original cows.” The Andersen’s came into their marriage partnership with a shared love of rural life and cattle, at their first home base near Delacour, AB. Dianne’s grandfather raised Shorthorns, while her folks had Herefords. It was the influence of the Isleys at Langdon, that led to the breed that was a fit for them. “Jean (Isley) said ‘have you ever seen Salers?’’ recalls Dianne. “She told us to come on down and have a look. Shortly after, we purchased some females from the Isleys, bred to a well-known bull named Jupiter.” And the DynaRich legacy was born. The Andersen’s then spent over a decade at Rockyford, AB building their herd, while Richard worked as a pressure welder, and Dianne had a job as an executive secretary in the oil industry. But as their passion for cattle grew, so did their numbers, and they needed more space. They moved north to Evansburg, where they were able to expand their land base and herd to about 120 head as they embarked on farming full time, with the help of their son Ken. Farmfair International in Edmonton became a key place for DynaRich Salers to promote their animals. Dianne became the breed representative, organizing the Salers shows. “We showed cattle for about ten years,” said Dianne. “It was stressful, but I loved it, and met lots of wonderful cattle people!” 20

Over the years, DynaRich built a solid base of commercial buyers, mainly advertising in papers and selling off the farm. Dianne enjoys the marketing aspect of the cattle business. With Richard having knee surgeries, and Ken moving his family to B.C. to take on a great opportunity as Ranch Manager of Todd Mountain Thoroughbreds in Kamloops, Andersen’s began downsizing the herd about ten years ago. The encouraging part was being able to help others get started in Salers cattle, like Wayne and Shelley Sereda of Big Valley, and Simone Reese of Didsbury. A search for land closer to family in Airdrie resulted in finding a pretty piece west of Sylvan Lake, where they moved the herd in 2013. They bale their own hay from forty acres of alfalfa and have pasture on their quarter-section, as well as leasing some grass nearby. Calving is late February and into March. Now down to about 30-35 head, DynaRich still markets half a dozen bulls annually, both red and black. Community has always been important, and when son Ken was a 4-H member, Dianne served as the main leader of the Irricana Beef, Sheep and Small Engine Club. In Evansburg, Dianne managed the West Central Forage Association, and Richard also served as a director. In 2003, the Andersen’s were named the Yellowhead County Farm Family of the year. The passion Dianne and Richard have for their cattle is clear, even as they slow down their workload. To receive the Salers Canada Breeder award is very special to them. “We really promote the breed to our commercial buyers,” explained Richard. “People who bought the cattle really liked them. We even had one buyer who sent us a blank cheque to buy a bull. Doesn’t that give you goosebumps?” That kind of trust and faith in the Andersen’s speaks volumes, about both their quality Salers cattle, and the people themselves.

Eleveur Pur Race

The Genetics of Horned and Polled Cattle by Michelle Miller, CEO Neogen Canada

There are a number of reasons to make the decision to breed horns out of your cattle herd. Horns can result in discounted pricing and can be dangerous to your other cattle, your infrastructure, and even the folks working with these animals. Dehorning is also an animal welfare issue, above and beyond being a frustrating and generally terrible process for everyone involved (calves and people included). So if you’ve made the decision to breed horns out of your cattle herd, this article will explain some of the genetics behind horned and polled cattle to help you put together a plan. First, it should be made clear that no one fully understands the genetics behind horns in cattle, but we have made significant progress over the past 10 years and have increased our understanding to a point that we can make confident breeding decisions based on the information that genetic testing provides. Diving in now, the first bit of good news is that when it comes to horned and polled cattle, horned is the recessive trait and polled is the dominant trait. This means that being polled is the default. Each calf has two copies of DNA (one from the cow and one from the bull), and only calves that inherit two copies of the “horned DNA” will actually be horned. The disadvantage of horns being a recessive trait though, is that horns may hide in a pedigree of polled animals for many years before you see an animal with horns again, which could lead to a big surprise when that horned calf finally does show up! 22

So how do we prevent these surprise calves with horns from showing up? Through genetic testing, we can identify which polled animals have one copy of the “polled DNA” and are effectively hiding the one copy of “horned DNA” they also have, and which animals have two copies of the “polled DNA”. Once an animal with two copies of the “polled DNA” is identified through genetic testing, then that animal can be bred to any animal (polled or horned) and all of the calves will be polled. There are a number of different breeding situations and the expected ratios of horned and polled calves shown in the figure below. The final issue with horned and polled genetics to consider is that from research, we are aware of two different sets of “polled DNA”. The first set of “polled DNA” was discovered in dairy cattle and is called the “Friesian allele”. The second set of “polled DNA” was discovered in beef cattle from Scotland and is called the “Celtic allele”. No one understands the complete history of these two sets of “polled DNA”, but in general, the Friesian allele is more common in dairy cattle and the Celtic allele is more common in beef cattle. That being said, beef cattle have been found to have the Friesian allele and vice versa. Some animals have even been found to have both the Friesian and Celtic sets of “polled DNA”. There is also evidence that the two sets of “polled DNA” overlap with each other. So why does it matter if there are two sets of “polled DNA”? The reason is because how to test for the Friesian allele is publically available, but how to test for the Celtic allele is protected. This means that any genetic testing laboratory can easily setup the test for the Friesian allele, but in order to test for the Celtic allele, that laboratory has to setup a licensing agreement and pay royalties. Now, that point about the two sets of “polled DNA” overlapping is advantageous because most of the time, testing for the Friesian allele will be good enough to properly identify the number of copies of “polled DNA” that an animal has. However, there will be a few rare cases where only testing for the Friesian allele provides the wrong number of copies of “polled DNA”. Overall, the decision to breed horns out of your cattle herd is a big decision to make and there are tools through genetic testing that exist to help manage horns in your herd.

Salers Association of Canada 2019

Expected ratios of horned and polled calves from different breeding strategies. H = Horned DNA HH = Homozygous Horned = Two copies of the Horned DNA (Horned animal) P = Polled DNA HP = Heterozygous Polled = One copy each of the Polled and Horned DNA PP = Homozygous Polled = Two copies of the Polled DNA a) In this situation, the bull is homozygous polled (PP) and the cow is heterozygous polled (HP). None of the offspring have horns but only 25% are homozygous polled (PP). The other 75% of calves have only one copy of the polled DNA (HP).

b) In this situation, the bull is again homozygous polled (PP) and the cow has horns (HH). None of the offspring have horns but all of them are carrying one copy of the horned DNA (HP).

c) In this situation the bull and the cow are both heterozygous polled (HP). One-quarter of the calves will have horns and another one-quarter of the calves will be homozygous polled (PP). The other 50% of the calves will be the same as their parents, heterozygous polled (HP).

d) In this final situation, the bull is heterozygous polled (HP) and the cow is horned (HH). Half of the calves will have horns and the other half will be carrying on copy of the horned DNA (HP).

2018 Scholarship Winner

Congratulations to Janalee Sweetland, our first scholarship winner! Janalee, the daughter of Ken and Wendy Sweetland is pursuing a career in Clinical Genetics. She is currently in her second year of the Medical Laboratory Sciences program, having completed the first year at the Red River College in Winnipeg, as well as prerequisite courses through the University of Manitoba. She was a member of the Lundar 4-H beef club for 10 years, with Salers as her projects each year. As she focused more in the replacement heifer projects, she developed greater interest in how choosing the right combination of sires and dams could improve overall profitability of the operation. This led her to take a more active interest in the operations of the farm, becoming involved in the record keeping that is required for effective performance testing. Janalee believes that her involvement in her family’s Salers seed stock operation has led her to pursue a career in Clinical Genetics.

The National Western Stock Show is considered the Super Bowl of Livestock Shows as one of the World’s Largest Cattle Shows! Gerry Isley, Gar Williams & Heidi Voegeli-Bleiker attended the 2019 National Stock Show in Denver and the Annual General Meeting of the American Salers Association. Salers events at the National Stock Show in Denver were: Breeder’s Choice Sire Futurity Show, National Heifer & Bull Pen Show, 44th National Salers Sale, Salers Junior Heifer Show followed by the National Salers and Optimizer Show. The Canadian delegation met with Sherry Doubet, Executive Vice President of the American Salers Association to discuss business and enjoyed socializing with American Salers Breeders and Board Members of the American Salers Association.

The North American International Livestock Exposition The North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), Louiseville, Kentucky is the largest all-breed, purebred livestock event in the world, with 10 livestock divisions and nearly 30,000 entries from the 48 contiguous states - all under one roof. Countless exhibitors and visitors attend each year. In November 2019 Gerry Isley and Wayne Sereda attended NAILE. Gerry Isley “This fall Wayne Sereda and I had the opportunity to attend the North American International Livestock Exposition. It is claimed to be the worlds largest all breeds purebred livestock exposition. We walked through barns of every species it was very interesting to see the variety of Goats Sheep and other small animals, but most important to us was the BEEF cattle. Salers were well represented, primarily by breeders from east of the Mississippi. I’ve met many of these breeders in Denver but there was a good group that hasn’t made the annual trip to Denver. The Eastern States group brought out a lot of fantastic cattle and showed us great hospitality. We compared Environmental and economic challenges relating to our Salers cattle, had some laughs and learned a little about bourbon. Fellowship is one of the most enjoyable and valuable things we do as purebred breeders. The days following the show we travelled the two-lane roads of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia seeing the scenery and seeing more Salers cattle in there home pastures. As well we went to Churchill Downs to watch the horse races, saw live music in Nashville and stopped by the Corvette museum.” 30
