Finally, meet Nino,
the CONTENT SPINOSAURUS, who is happy just as he is.
Before we begin, let me share my story with you, too. My name is Dr Diplo.
Diplo, you have a new teacher.
When I was young, I was worried about lots of things...
Will she do v oices h s e n r eads st w he ories? Does she know that I 't like playing outside? n o d
Will she eat me?!
I’ve lost Wonky Rock.
There are too many things to do and it’s making my tummy hurt.
You can have mine.
It’s not the same... It looks the same. 4
5
So, I tried things I thought could help, like yoga...
mindfulness...
exercise...
and talking about my feelings.
The more I paid attention to my body, the more I noticed that the things I do can affect the way that I feel.
Then I saw other dinosaurs feeling bad, too...
I want Mummy. 6
I’m cross.
I’m not good at this. 7
When I felt like I had some answers, I opened my cave up to all the dinosaurs in my neighbourhood so I could share what I had learnt.
8
And now I’ve put those stories and exercises in this book to help you with your tricky emotions, too!
9
STEGGIE, the ANGRY STEGOSAURUS
It wasn’t meant to be bad! The weather dino said there would be sunshine...
but when I opened the curtains, the sky was dark!
Hmph Hey Steggie. What’s up? Have you had a bad day? Dr Diplo... I've had the worst day. See, I’d planned a day of picnicking and playing with my friend Stoggie.
I set off to make the perfect picnic...
I can’t wait!
10
11
It was a feast! Cake and waffles, piled high with berries and moss. I’d taken it outside and set it up last night, ready for our playdate.
But when I woke...
I thought I could cheer myself up by visiting my favourite bush for a snack. But the queue was as long as my neck!
! ! R A O R Come and join us, Steggie.
NO!
it was a mushy pool of rain-cake-waffles! 12
13
I stomped all the way home.
STOM
STOMP!
I just wanted to crawl into bed with a snack. But when I got there... What you are feeling is an emotion called ANER.
P!
I don’t like feeling like this.
STOMP!
all I found were my messy baking dishes!

15
Take a deep breath in and out, and look up. I know, Steggie, but this is a very common emotion we all feel from time to time, and you have certainly had a frustrating day. Steggie, I would like you to think about the WEATHER again.
Imagine you are lying on the grass, looking up at the sky. Some days are stormy,
some are sunny.
Are you sure? The weather is what made me angry in the first place. 16
Just like the weather, this feeling will pass, too. 17
ANGER We all feel anger in our bodies in different ways. It’s good to listen to your body and work out how you are feeling. If you are angry, you might feel like: Remember it’s OK to feel angry. Your face is getting hot and red
ezing your hands Sque or even into fists tight
It will only last a little while.

Now take a deep breath out. Let your anger go with your breath.
19
REX, the FEARFUL T-REX Dr Diplo, I need to talk to you.
What's wrong, Rex?
You know how lots of dinos are a bit scared of me because I’m a T-Rex? 20
Yes. And I know you have been working hard not to chomp on your neighbours and friends.
I have. And everyone thinks I’m the bravest dinosaur because nothing scares a T-Rex. Only... 21
This looks like it will be a great night.
But in the dark, I could be savaged by a Spinosaurus!
And I could trip over small rocks and fall headfirst on my eyeballs.
Worst of all, I’ve heard stories of ghosties and ghoulies coming out after dark and spooking dinos who weren’t looking to be spooked!
But I don’t want to miss out on the party.

I want to stay up late and eat roasted marshmallow-mosses with my friends…
But I'm too scared! Scared of the dark!
I Feel Roarsome
And watch the comets light up like fireworks.
Rex, many of us have a fear of the dark. In fact, many of us have lots of different fears and that is normal, too. 24
25
I think I know an exercise that can help get you there.
When you feel worried just lie comfortably on your back and balance Toof on your belly. Breathe in deeply.
Do you have a favourite toy?
Yes. This is Toof.
Your belly buddy might rise as it sits on top. Slowly breathe out.
Toof is going to be your BELLY BUDDY. He will help you feel calm in the dark. 26
Repeat this a few times. Hold your belly buddy on your chest and let them listen to your heartbeat. 27
FEAR We all feel fear in our bodies in different ways. It’s good to listen to your body and work out how you are feeling. If you are featful, you might feel like:

She’s my best friend.

Bruno! It’s nice to see you again. How are you today? Granny is moving away.
30
We do everything together. Granny taught me how to roller skate...
31
And how to make the best water balloons.
And how to find the greenest plants to snack on! 32
Granny claps loudly when I’m playing football at school.
And she always cheers me up if we lose. 33
But Mama told me she’s not been very well.
Now Granny must move away and live somewhere where she can be cared for.
Are you worried she will be lonely without you, Bruno?
I’m worried I’m going to lose my bestest friend. I don’t want her to move away.
Bruno, I can see this is making you feel very SAD indeed.
And I’m sure your Granny is feeling very sad, too.
Mama said there would be lots of other older dinos at her new house.
I can teach you an exercise to keep you feeling close even when you are far apart.
And she will make lots of new friends. 34
35
This exercise is called the OLDEN LINK. Take a deep breath in and out and concentrate on your heart.
The link never goes away. Even if you can’t see it, it keeps you close no matter what. It’s gold and bright and filled with the love you and your granny have for each other.
Imagine there is a golden string, connecting you to your granny wherever she is.
Like when she is in her new home? Yes, exactly. 36
Now take another deep breath in… and out. Let the feeling of sadness come and go and remember you have an unbreakable connection with the people you love. 37
SADNESS We all feel sadness in our bodies in different ways. It’s good to listen to your body and work out how you are feeling. If you are sad you might feel like:

TERRIE, the EXCITED PTEROSAUR
It sounds like you’ve been thinking about your birthday party a lot.
I’m having a big party.
It’s my birthday in two months, three days, eleven hours and thirtytwo minutes, Dr Diplo! How exciting, Terrie.
There’s going to be cakes and sweets and fruit on sticks…
It was two months, three days, eleven hours and thirty-three minutes away one minute ago. It’s getting closer! 40
41
And music! A DJ and a band, all playing at the same time…
That sounds like lots of fun. Are all your friends and family coming? I hope so. But I’m not sure.
And a bouncy rock and floating balloons and games where dinos need to climb up a pyramid. And everyone must come dressed as something beginning with ‘T’.
Why is that? I annoyed my family a bit yesterday.
We were late for the comet shower because I was talking about my party and not getting ready quickly. 42
43
And I was supposed to help Trev babysit his brothers and sisters…
but I was so busy thinking about my party, I forgot.
Terrie, sometimes excitement can get in the way of us being present.
It’s OK to be excited. But when we are OVEREXCITED, we get caught up in our own thoughts and forget about everyone else. At school, I was talking about my party for Show and Tell…
But I overran and no one else got to do their Show and Tell. 44
I don’t want to upset everyone. I want them to come to my party.
I have an exercise called STAR JUMPS. It helps get your excited beans out so you can stay present with your loved ones. 45
Stand with your wings by your sides and your legs together.
As you breathe out, jump both feet apart while bringing your wings up above your head.
Jump your feet in and bring your wings back down by your sides.
Good job, Terrie.
Take a deep breath in.
And keep going to help your body cope with all that excitement bubbling away inside. 46

EXCITEMENT We all feel excitement in our bodies in different ways. It’s good to listen to your body and work out how you are feeling. If you are overexcited, you might feel like:

POPPY, the LONELY VELOCIRAPTOR
Tell me about what you did today.
It’s OK, Poppy. You can tell Dr Diplo about your day.
Welcome to the village, Poppy. How are you settling in?
OK, I guess.
Perhaps you are missing your old home?
Not really.
I’m not sure Poppy enjoyed her old school much. 50
51
And share my new shiny rock collection with them…
See, it’s hard to make friends when you are a Velociraptor.
The only other Velociraptor at her old school took a bite out of the teacher’s leg! I think Poppy was quite excited about moving to a new school, weren’t you, Poppy?
I thought maybe I could invite them over for a tea party, too…
I really wanted to make new friends…
or a sleepover.
That sounds like good fun! 52
53
It’s never easy being the new dino in town, Poppy.
I know a good spooky bedtime story about a clown and a cave. But when I saw all the other dinos in the school playground today I felt shy.
I didn’t want to say hello. My tummy hurt too much. 54
Even I have felt LONELY when I’m in a new environment. But we can practise the skills we need to make new friends.
And that will help build your confidence. 55
I call this exercise FRIEND IN THE MIRROR.
Look in the mirror and take a deep breath in. Stand up tall and strong.
Look at yourself for ten seconds, and as you smile say, ‘Hi, I’m Poppy. Would you like to be my friend?’.
Hi
Now breathe out, and as you do, put a big smile on your face. 56
It can feel a bit embarrassing at first but give it a try.
Hi
Hi, I’m Poppy. Would you like to be my friend?
Do it again and again until it feels natural. And see what it feels like to accept someone’s friendship.

PERCY, the SHY PLESIOSAURUS Percy! How is our swimming superstar today?
I just don’t want to go.
Can you help, Dr Diplo?
Not feeling that super. He’s missed his last three swimming lessons. Percy, do you not like swimming anymore?
I love swimming! I’ve been swimming since I was a hatchling.
What’s going on, Percy?
60
61
He has lots and lots of medals to show for it.
But recently…
And I saw myself in the mirror. I didn’t like my knees or the way my flippers look.
Percy, tell me what happened at today’s swimming lesson.
And I felt shy getting in the water with everyone else when I look like this.
I was getting ready at home.
Percy, our bodies are amazing things. 62
63
But we sometimes we feel self-conscious or SHY about our body.
Stand up and take a deep breath in. Focus on your head.
Do you think that’s how you might be feeling?
I think so. Thank your ears for listening and your eyes for letting you see the beautiful world. Thank your mouth for eating delicious foods and allowing you to speak.
We can remind ourselves just how amazing our bodies are with a mindful exercise called THANK YOU, BODY. 64
And let’s not forget to thank your brilliant brain for helping you solve problems and think. 65
Let’s take another deep breath, Percy, and this time focus on your flippers.
Finally, take a deep breath in and connect with your whole body.
Thank them for letting you write and create marvellous things. And let’s also thank them for helping us give and receive hugs.

MINKA, the HAPPY ANKYLOSAURUS
Grandma has taken me on hikes…
Diplo, meet my brilliant granddaughter, Minka. Hello, Mrs Anko and Minka. Are you visiting for the holidays?
And now Grandma is taking me to visit Santasaurus. It looks like a long queue.
Yes!

I learnt all about plants from you, Grandma. I drew a picture of me and Grandma together.
I wish I could take you home with me, Grandma.
I wish I could keep you here, Little One.
You two have such a wonderful bond. It reminds me that when we are in our HAPPY moments, we should take a moment to be mindful.
Are you both wearing jet packs? We are! 74
I would like to know how to do that.
So would I. 75
I know just the exercise for this. It is one I call RATITUDE. Face one another and take a deep breath in and out.
Think about how it made you feel. Imagine that you are giving out warm feelings of love and kindness towards each other. Let gratitude fill your heart. When you are ready, say out loud, ‘thank you’.

TREV, the WORRIED TRICERATOPS Woah! Slow down, Trev. What’s the rush?
In the mornings before school… I have to help get my seven brothers and sisters ready for the day.
I’ve got to get to orchestra, pick up my siblings, prepare for Science Club...
You sound like you have a lot on your plate.
It’s a lot of responsibility to be a big brother.
It is. And I must make sure they all get to the right classes before the bell goes.
I do, and I feel a bit lost with it all. Every day it feels like I have more and more things to do. 80
81
We can’t have the toddler twins in Pinky’s dance rehearsal.
And after school… I help run Science Club.
And it would be a disaster if I accidentally dropped off Remi to Mini’s pre-school.
What a lot of things to do!
But I’ve just joined an orchestra and it’s my job to play the triangle.
Help my mum and dad at dinnertime…
And then I need to tend to my herb garden… 82
83
And I’m also trying to write a book.
How exciting! Tell me about your book.
My teacher is really excited to read it and every day she asks how the writing is going.
But it’s not going. It’s all about a Triceratops who solves mysteries and discovers a hidden land beneath a volcano.
Urgh!
Sometimes I stay awake at night worrying about all the things I still need to do. 84
I already have a long list of things I need to do before I can start on my story.
I was so tired today, I snapped at my little sister when she put her slippers on the wrong feet. 85
Trev, we all feel WORRIED or overwhelmed with things to do from time to time. It's important to ask for help when this happens. Our friends and family want to support us. In the meantime I have an exercise for you. It's called MINDFUL STEPS.
Stand up tall, and slowly take five or six steps in one direction.
Stop and then turn before taking five or six steps back to where you started. As you walk, notice your breath, then notice your body.
Try to notice all the things around you that you can see, feel and hear as you walk bringing your mind back to the here and now.

IGGY, the BORED IGUANODON
But the only pictures to choose from were the T-Rex in ballet slippers –
Everything at school is boring!
That would’ve been my choice. Like what?
And the Stegosaurus on a bike.
Today we were doing colouring in… I did both of those yesterday already. 90
91
My teacher said I should go outside to see the science experiment.
So, what did you do?
I told my teacher everything was boring.
That’s exciting! I like science.
Wait until you hear the boring experiment. Two of my friends were trying to see which rock falls the fastest from the top of the jungle gym.
Boo
And then my friend who was colouring in said that was not true.
! g n i oor We had an argument and they got upset.
Oh dear. 92
93
When my teacher told me off, I kicked over the crayons.
She wasn't very happy with me.
The FIVE THINS exercise can help us pay attention and be curious in the here and now. Look around and tell me five things you can see.
Iggy, it’s OK to feel BORED but there are many exciting things to discover in the world. I’m worried you will miss out.
I see a spiky plant, a strange rock, a pair of glasses, a desk…
I guess.
I have a mindful exercise that might help when you are in a bored slump. 94
And a splat on the window where a bug must have flown straight into it. 95
Good. Now, name four things you can feel.
Think about their texture and temperature. Close your eyes and tell me three things you can hear.
I can feel my feet. They are quite sweaty.
I can feel my head and this chair and the floor too.
Great job. Now notice one thing you can taste.
Mints on your desk and the green plant.
I still have some crayon in my teeth. It tastes salty.
And I can hear my own breath.
I hear dinos outside. I can hear the wind flapping that plant. 96
Now tell me two things you can smell.
Well done, Iggy. This exercise helps ground us and bring us back into the moment, especially when we are in a boredom spiral. 97

NINO, the CONTENT SPINOSAURUS
I like spotting the shapes in the clouds. Last week, I saw three trees, a Velociraptor... And I even saw my teacher picking berries out of the ferns!
How are the school holidays going, Nino? Great! I’m doing all my favourite things.
Tell me what you have been up to. I’ve done lots of cloud watching. 100
That sounds wonderful! 101
I’ve also been reading lots about the Spinosaurus. Did you know a Spinosaurus is bigger than a Tyrannosaurus rex?
Really? The T-Rex is pretty big. Yes! And a Spinosaurus is the only dinosaur that can live in the water.
All the other dinosaurs have to live on the land because they haven’t got their swimming badges yet. 102
How fascinating! I wish I had my swimming badge.
I’m going to write my own book on the Spinosaurus one day.
You sound like you are having a great holiday. I am. But my parents think I’m unhappy because I don’t want to go to the playground like all my friends.
But I’m not unhappy. I just like reading about the Spinosaurus. 103
Yesterday, Steggie and Terrie came over to invite me to Terrie’s party.
You must trust yourself, Nino. What you're feeling is CONTENTMENT.
I have an exercise for you called THE ROUNDING TREE. I don’t really enjoy parties. I would much rather watch the clouds.
But I felt like I couldn’t say no without upsetting everyone. 104
Take a deep breath in and out.
As you breathe, imagine an ancient, strong, beautiful tree. 105
Imagine that you step into this tree, and as you do, lift your arms to your shoulder height, holding them out. Your arms become part of the branches of this tree.
As you breathe in, imagine that your arms are taking in strength from the sky through the branches.
As you breathe out, imagine that you are releasing your worries through the roots to the earth and the ground beneath your feet.
Your body forms the trunk. And your legs and feet become the roots. Picture yourself becoming a part of this tree and feel the steady support of the trunk and roots. 106
And when you are ready, picture yourself stepping out of the tree, feeling calm, confident and grounded. 107

A DINO-SIZED NOTE TO CARERS We hope you’ve enjoyed reading Dr Diplo's stories with your child. We created it as we wanted to provide a toolkit for children to grow into emotionally resilient individuals, to reinforce the importance of help-seeking behaviours and normalise talking therapy – and hugs! As you read, encourage your child to share their own experiences that mirror those of the dinosaurs and discuss how they handled them. By providing a safe space for discussion, you can help them develop a deeper understanding of their feelings and behaviours.
