Excel/UltraMax Sand filled synthetic grass bowling greens have been around for over 20 years. During this time, they have evolved from a higher pile height and low stitch count, using polypropylene yarn, to the most recent specifications of low pile height, high stitch count polyethylene yarn.
Excel/UltraMax is a 36 stitch 10mm pile height synthetic surface, widely used throughout Australia by KCL Sports and Green Planet Grass in the construction of bowling greens. Manufactured in Melbourne by APT Asia Pacific, the Excel/ UltraMax is exclusive to Green Planet Grass and KCL Sports in Australia.
Jon Hastings from KCL Sports pioneered the use of polyethylene springlock yarns for the DryMax Pro synthetic bowling surface. Between them, KCL Sports & Green Planet Grass have installed nearly 300 synthetic bowling greens. The shorter pile height and higher stitch count, requires less sand to infill the surface of the green and a shorter time is needed to bring the surface up to speed
for bowling. The yarn is UV stabilized for harsh Australian conditions, producing a long lasting, high performance surface. The Excel/UltraMax has been used in retirement and lifestyle villages for half size greens and in full size installations for bowling Clubs. As well as the Excel/UltraMax, KCL Sports and Green Planet Grass also offer a range of 12mm surfaces.
Both Green Planet Grass in Western Australia and KCL Sports on the east coast, offer a full maintenance programme to keep your synthetic grass bowling greens in peak condition for optimal performance and to extend the life of the green. This can include thatching to lift the pile, algae treatment, sand level adjustment and re-rolling of the surface.

Ultimate Bowls The Ultimate Bowls™ Championship is the most lucrative bowls event in the world, with a record prize pool of $500,000, as well as a broadcast package that allows us to showcase our great game through 22 countries around the world. The UBC is a pairs event; however, all teams consist of three players who rotate during each event. There are three events played per year.
The format of the Ultimate Bowls™ has been strategically designed to appeal to both the bowls enthusiasts, and to people who enjoy watching sport at its best in a fast-paced, exciting manner. We see a winner of every match after just 25 minutes, which has spectators both at the venue, and watching on TV at home, on the edge of their seats. One of the UBC’s most exciting features is its dynamic and innovative scoring system. Players have the opportunity to score points with every bowl that is played. A ‘toucher’ earns their team 3 points, as does holding the shot when the leads have finished their bowls.
Both teams have the opportunity to earn points on the same end; 10 points for the closest bowl, 5 points for the second-closest and 3 points for the third-closest.
Rather than using the traditional scoreboards, we have modernised our sport by using electronic screens which are positioned at the end of each rink. All screens are connected to UBC’s newly-developed web-based app which automatically updates the score as points

Money worries and cancer When you’re dealing with cancer, the last thing you want to have to worry about is money. But being ill tends to be tough on your finances. If people have to stop working or reduce their hours, they earn less. There are often higher out of pocket costs relating to transport, medications and sometimes childcare.
In fact, responses to Cancer Council Queensland’s Everyday Health Survey showed 63 per cent of people struggled to meet out-ofpocket costs during cancer treatment, with 26 per cent reporting a severe impact financially. That’s more than 6 in 10 people struggling and close to 3 in 10 in severe crisis. Being worried about money is miserable, especially if you are ill as well.
For Carl and Linda Rattray, getting treatment for Carl’s tumour meant quitting their jobs, leaving their hometown of Roma and spending up to four months living in Brisbane. Without money coming in each month, the terrified couple didn’t know what to do. The bills back home didn’t stop. And the cost of living in the city was an extra expense they simply couldn’t afford. It shouldn’t have to be this way. Everyone deserves the chance to overcome cancer, regardless of their financial circumstances or where
they live. And donors, like you agree, recently raising $115,000 through the March appeal to help ensure our vital support services are available for patients and their families.
The Everyday Health Survey shows that much more needs to be done to reduce the financial burden of a cancer diagnosis for patients and carers.
That’s why, every day, Cancer Council Queensland speaks out on behalf of people with cancer and those who love them on the issues that matter to them. With your support we are advocating for reduced out-of-pocket costs for all Queenslanders affected by cancer. We can only continue to advocate to save lives and to make lives better because of the support you give. Thank you. If you or someone you love is experiencing financial difficulty due to cancer, call Cancer Council 13 11 20 to find out more about our legal, financial and workplace Pro Bono Program.

CONTRIBUTIONS CONTINUE ROLLING IN FOR BOWLS DISASTER RELIEF FUND
like Malua was heartbreaking. This was a small way to help ease some of the burden of rebuilding.”
Bowls clubs and bowlers around the country continue to dig deep for Bowls Australia’s (BA) Bowls Disaster Relief Fund, with more than $25,000 raised since the start of January.
100 per cent of all sums raised are re-directed back to clubs in need.
Ms Richards said she was especially appreciative of online support from the bowling community. BA CEO Neil Dalrymple accepted a $4500 from the club on January 30 alongside Regional Bowls Manager Paul Holtschke.
“It is amazing to see the ongoing efforts of clubs, like Thornbury, in helping those in need,” Mr Dalrymple said.
Thornbury Bowls Club made a significant contribution to the fund, raising $4500 after a successful fundraising event to help clubs impacted by fires across Australia.
About 190 people turned out to the club’s event on January 17 – co-hosted with events organisation Rinky Dinky – running activities including triples bowls, a raffle and live music. The club sold through more than 2 donated “karma kegs” in the first few hours of the event, with donated beer allowing the club to donate 100 per cent of sales.
Event co-organiser Ronelle Richards said the support from bowlers and the community was incredible.
“I’m so grateful to the incredible teamwork of our club and Rinky Dink who helped pull this event together in less than a week. And I’m so humbled by the generous spirit of the Thornbury community who supported this event,” she said. “I grew up in the Black Saturday impacted area of Kilmore, so seeing the impact of bushfires on the community and bowls clubs

World Champion of
Champions
Kylie Whitehead added a World Title to her impressive list of achievements, when she took out the World Champion of Champions Singles in Adelaide late last year. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever imagined I would get to that level, let alone win a World Championship.” the Team Henselite star said, “I still have to pinch myself, and do a double take when people say it to me. I think the biggest moment was when they announced my name during the medal presentation and standing on top of the podium, that was a pretty crazy moment and one I will never forget.” “I had never experienced bowls at an international level, so didn’t really know what to expect, but everyone was so lovely, and I made so many new friends. And I absolutely loved playing at that level where every game is such high standard, and you know you have to play your best to win because these players are the best in their country. You know you have your work cut out for you.”
“My toughest opponent was probably Sophie Tolchard, as she did beat me in the sectional, and she was all class, how she went about the game. And also Shae from Norfolk Island and Debbie from New Zealand were my biggest challenges and I had to go to another level to overcome both ladies.” In the final Kylie was a set down and 7-1 in the second but, like a true champion, she never gave up and was able to will herself back into the match.
“I just thought, ‘try not to disgrace yourself ’.” she said. “Debbie had been playing really well all game, and I definitely let the occasion get to me. I guess the bowls gods were looking down on me, and through some horrible misfortune of Debbie’s, I was able to pick up a 3, and then relaxed from there, as I thought, ‘well hopefully I can get to a respectable score even if I lose in straight sets’.” “The crowd support definitely helped as well, as it was a ‘home crowd’. I think they just wanted to see a better game than what it was looking like being! When I ended up winning the second set I honestly couldn’t believe I had been able to take it to a tiebreaker,
and thought, well win or lose, I got myself back in the game and regardless of the result, I was going to be happy.”
“I think playing for your country you definitely feel added pressure. And being on home soil added to that a bit too, because you want to do your country proud. I was just glad I was able to get back in the game and didn’t end up disgracing myself. Australia has such a rich history of champions too, particularly in this event, so even though I was nowhere in the calibre of previous winners, I just didn’t want to let our reputation down.” “The greens were very similar to my home clubs at Wodonga, so I knew that I would feel reasonably comfortable on them. I love that my Dreamline XGs handle any conditions. I think I have used Dreamline XGs now for 6 years and would not use any other bowl.”
“Regardless of how I would have done, though, the whole week was an amazing experience. All the competitors and managers were all so lovely and kind, and nothing was too much trouble for anyone. I was able to make some life-long friends who I will definitely keep in contact with, and hopefully can get back to play in it again one day just to experience it all again. World Bowls and Adelaide Bowling Club did such a fantastic job of running the event also.” “I definitely had plenty of support, a group of bowlers from my home club at Wodonga which was so special to have them there all week. My nephew and my Mum also made the journey down from Port Pirie and Alice Springs respectively, and they had never watched me play competitively, so to have them there was amazing and something I will never forget. And, of course, my number 1 supporter, my Grandma was with me every step of the way. There was a photo taken of her and I embracing after I won, and definitely so happy that moment was captured, because it is one that I will hold dear to me forever.”
Following her World Champion of Champions victory, Kylie went on to win a Bronze medal in the singles at the Australian Championships in Merimbula. “For now I will keep playing bowls locally and at state, and if I am lucky to enough to get back to compete at the Champ of Champs again that would be amazing, but I will just keep enjoying my bowls and see where it takes me.”

2020 WORLD BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIPS: JACKAROOS TEAM CONFIRMED Bowls Australia (BA) selectors have confirmed the 10-strong contingent to be charged with the nation’s hopes on home soil at the 2020 World Bowls Championships.
With 36 nations to take part in the 14-day event from Tuesday, May 26 to Sunday, June 7 across Broadbeach, Helensvale and Musgrave Hill Bowling Clubs on the Gold Coast, the BCiB Australian Jackaroos will be led by a host of familiar names, as well as three debutants for their first foray in the competition. Having cemented their international spots over the past 12 months with both individual successes in national events and encouraging performances with the Jackaroos, Ellen Ryan (22), Corey Wedlock (23) and Aaron Teys (26) will make their World Bowls Championships debuts. The New South Wales trio have been integral to the Jackaroos in recent events, with the versatile Wedlock forming a formidable partnership with Aaron Wilson in the Pairs, while Teys and Ryan have strengthened their respective teams’ disciplines. An esteemed level of experience is set to compliment the aforementioned injection of youth, with more than 20 World Championship medals (including 12 gold) held between the remaining seven players.
Handed the responsibility of the coveted Women’s Singles post, Kelsey Cottrell will have history on her side as she aims to continue Australia’s golden run in this discipline, with the recently-retired Karen Murphy having won the past two World Championship Singles gold medals. Cottrell will double up in Pairs action with two-time World Championship gold medallist and Helensvale local Lynsey Clarke, who after missing the recent Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, returns to the fold.
Rebecca Van Asch and Natasha Scott will again spearhead Australia in both Triples and Fours action, with Ryan slotting into the lead position of both disciplines replacing Carla Krizanic, who has made herself unavailable due to the pregnancy of her first child. Alongside Krizanic, Van Asch and Scott have largely been responsible for the Jackaroos dominance in the Women’s game in recent high-calibre events, with the trio current holders of both World Championship and Commonwealth Games gold medals in the Triples and Fours.
Elsewhere and among the Men’s selections, Aaron Wilson will again be entrusted with Men’s Singles duties for the second successive benchmark international event, having famously secured gold for Australia in his Commonwealth Games debut in 2018.

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
Wilson will be eager for a repeat of his Gold Coast heroics and will also have a World Championships gold medal to defend in the Men’s Pairs, with Wedlock set to fill the shoes of the retired Brett Wilkie, who won gold with Wilson in 2016. Unsurprisingly, Aron Sherriff will spearhead both the Triples and Fours disciplines, with Barrie Lester recalled as Sherriff ’s lead after missing out on the recent Trans Tasman Test Series win over New Zealand.
Wedlock and Teys will fill the remaining positions in both teams’ disciplines, with the inclusion of Lester the sole change to the team from their Trans Tasman outing last week.
Australia will be hoping to better their haul of five gold medals from eight disciplines from the last time the event was held down under, at the 2012 World Bowls Championships in Adelaide. The Jackaroos were also the best-performed team at the most recent 2016 event, in New Zealand, with four gold, two silver and a bronze from the eight disciplines. 2020 World Bowls Championships May 26 – June 7, 2020 Gold Coast, QLD, Australia Broadbeach, Helensvale & Musgrave Hill BCiB Australian Jackaroos

Your Bedroom Your
Sanctuary
There comes a time in your life when comfort is difficult to come by. When aches and pains plague your day, bed time may be something you look forward to and relish. But what if you don’t have the very best mattress?
There is nothing better than drifting off to sleep in the luxurious cloud-like experience of your very own Sanctuary.
Sanctuary is an Australian made range of mattresses at the pinnacle of the Beds R Us collection.
Using fresh thinking and innovative design, Sleepyhead created Sanctuary to give you the best quality, comfort and support for an exceptional sleep. When Beds R Us claims that the Sanctuary is the best sleep ever made, we really mean it.
This range is only available at Beds R Us, a group of Australian retailers who want you to love your bedroom. We prize the relationship we have with the Australian manufacturer of Sanctuary, The Comfort Group, which produces Dunlop Foams in Queensland as well as our exclusive range of Sleepyhead beds.
The Sanctuary range was refreshed in the latter part of 2019 and now features three models, the Asti, Bianco and Matino with a firm, medium or plush feel. All three models contain Sensorzone springs nestled in their own space in the foam, like a pocket spring mattress but even better. Kulkote Silver is a phase change material included on the Dreamfoam comfort layer of each Sanctuary mattress, to promote heat dissipation and help keep you cool. There are multiple layers of
memory foam in each Sanctuary mattress, including graphene and fusion gel to assist with comfort and temperature balance. The top of the mattress is a luxury weave of natural silk or cashmere for supreme softness and durability.
We applaud the excellence of Sanctuary by Sleepyhead. As bedding experts for more than 27 years Beds R Us has seen bed technologies come and go. The very best materials and manufacturing techniques are reserved for the Sanctuary range. We love nothing more than the privilege of providing a Sanctuary bed to our valued customers, people who regard their sleep and comfort as much as they would a beloved car. After all, you will spend far more time in your bed than in your car, and the quality of your sleep has a direct impact on your wellbeing. Our customers understand and cherish the precious hours of rest available to them each night in their very own Sanctuary.

THE UNIQUE SUBURB OF LEICHHARDT IS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE LOCATIONS IN SYDNEY’S INNER WEST. THE SUBURB WAS NAMED AFTER PRUSSIAN EXPLORER LUDWIG LEICHHARDT AND WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1846 AND LATER PROCLAIMED A MUNICIPALITY IN 1871. SINCE THEN, THE SUBURB HAS EVOLVED INTO AN AFFLUENT INTERNATIONAL HUB OF ACTIVITY AND IS REGARDED AS THE CITY’S ‘’LITTLE ITALY.’’ Leichhardt is just 5km from the Sydney CBD district, making it a quick and pleasant commute into the city. Subsequently, as a direct consequent of its close proximity to the city, Leichhardt has attracted enormous capital growth, which has resulted in an influx of young professionals settling in the area. Needless to say, the housing market is thriving, with real estate agents reporting increased volumes of foot traffic at open homes, coupled with an unrelenting surge of inquiries from potential buyers to secure homes in the area. The actual suburb is an eclectic mix of residential and commercial developments, which offer the close-knit community an abundance of recreational facilities. Most of the architecture dates back to the Victorian era, and seamlessly co-exists with modern homes and apartment blocks scattered throughout the suburb. Thankfully, sympathetic Heritage laws have ensured that the streetscape has remained traditional and aesthetically pleasing......... 20

BOWLING&LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE ARE GIVING ONE LUCKY READER A DOUBLE PASS TO JOHN WILLIAMSON’S 2020 CONCERT “WINDING BACK.’’
Australian music icon John Williamson has embarked on a mammoth national tour of Australia which will coincide with his 75th Birthday and celebrates his 50th year in the music industry. This highly anticipated tour kicked off in Windsor N.S.W in January and concludes in Hobart in November, 2020. Williamson has achieved extraordinary success as a country music singer and song writer, and is best known for his 1983 iconic hit “TRUE BLUE’’ from his album “THE BEST OF JOHN WILLIAMSON.’’ John is one of Australia’s greatest artists and is regarded as a living legend in Australia and overseas. His contribution to the Australian music industry is staggering. He has released over fifty albums and sold more than 5 million albums throughout Australia. There is no other performer that has captured the Australian spirit like John Williamson. His remarkable career longevity is attributed to his formidable vocal technique and his song writing ability, which often relates to the Australian outback and Australian culture. During his career John has constantly rejected offers to take his music to the international stage, reiterating that he prefers to stay true to Australia. His most famous hit “True Blue’’ was subsequently, re-released in 1986 and was adopted by the Australian National Cricket Team and the Australian National Rugby Union team as an unofficial theme song and often performed at sporting events. In 1992, Williamson was made “A MEMBER OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA’’ (AM) for service to Australian Country music and for highlighting awareness of Conservation issues. HE HAS RECEIVED 27 GOLDEN GUITAR TROPHIES AT THE COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS OF AUSTRALIA, AND WON 3 ARIA MUSIC AWARDS FOR BEST COUNTRY ALBUMS WITH “MALLEE BOY,’’ BOOMERANG CAFE’’ AND “TRUE BLUE.’’ IN THE YEAR 2000 HE WAS INVITED TO PERFORM AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE SYDNEY SUMMER OLYMPICS AND IN 2010 HE WAS INDUCTED INTO THE ARIA HALL OF FAME. John Robert Williamson was born in 1945 in the rural town of Kerang in Northern Victoria, and grew up in Quambatook in North-western Victoria.
Q & A with JOHN WILLIAMSON ******* Who were your early musical influences and where did your “performance style “ originate from.
JOHN : I am a country boy, so my ‘performance style’ came from my early farmland lifestyle and my early musical influences were Roger Miller and Pete Sega. When did you decide on a musical career
JOHN : 1970 after I appeared on “New Faces’’
Were there any other options career wise if you did not succeed in music, was there a plan B JOHN : Singing was my plan B, I actually wanted to be a wheat farmer What music do you like other than country music JOHN : I like Bob Dylan and Bob Marley Who is your favourite artist of all time
JOHN : Harry Bellafonte he was a true showman How do you cope with recognition
JOHN : I feel lucky that I’m still popular
Catherine’s Column
What can we expect from your “Winding Back tour’’ JOHN : 2 ½ hours of songs that people love.
Can you tell me about your association with The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital
JOHN : I have been a patron of the koala preservation society of Australia, ever since I met the late Jean Starr, in the early eighties. (WILDLIFE WARRIOR, JEAN STARR FOUNDED “THE KOALA PRESERVATION SOCIETY AUSTRALIA’’ WITH HER HUSBAND MAX IN 1973) I could not stand by and watch the demise of our precious marsupial around the Port Macquarie area. So, I began passing the hat around my audience at my concerts and I also recorded the song “Goodbye Blinky Bill.’’ We have now raised over $300,000 which was donated to the hospital to build a new wing which houses “The intensive Care Unit.’’ You are a passionate conservationist. What legacy would you like to leave behind.
JOHN : Give more respect to wildlife and protect their habitat. I am currently planting thousands of Talawood trees on my property in Springbrook and I also plan on sharing my Springbrook property with my fans by organising and performing at a concert on the property in June 2020. My greatest legacy is making Australians proud of their country. What are your plans for the next 10 years
JOHN : I plan to slow down, but not retire and be able to grow my own vegies. Interview Courtesy Of Catherine Colusso

Where Passionate Travellers Meet Ever wonder why so many people return home raving about their latest sailing? If you're among those who are considering a first cruise -- but who hasn't yet taken the leap -- take a look at these ten reasons from Cruise Critic as to why a cruise can be the perfect vacation for just about anyone Cruises offer great value for your vacation dollar because the fares include nearly everything you'll need for a fantastic trip: food, accommodations, daytime and evening entertainment and transportation between travel destinations. We regularly see cruise deals on mainstream cruise lines for under $100 per person, per night, which is astonishingly cheaper than you'd spend on land for a hotel, dinner and a show. On some lines, kids even sail free or at discounted rates when sharing a cabin with two adults. Looking for luxury? Upscale lines are even more inclusive, with alcoholic beverages and soft drinks, gratuities, shore tours, onboard spending credits, and even flights often bundled into the base price.
The ideal cruise ship for one person may be a mega-ship outfitted with onboard rock-climbing walls, bowling green, and outdoor movie theatres, while another will prefer an intimate ship with an upscale ambience and someone else will want the seafaring experience of a masted tall sailing ship. Luckily, all those different types of cruise ships exist.
From French Country Waterways' 12-person river barges to Royal Caribbean's 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas. More options range from the luxurious Seabourn Odyssey to the minimalist sailing ships of Star Clippers and even to ice-strengthened expedition ships like Hurtigruten's Fram.
Because cruise vacations package together transportation and accommodations, they're very easy to plan. Pick your ship, itinerary and cabin, and away you go -- no searching for hotels in your price range, no coordinating travel between cities. You can even get your travel agent to arrange your airfare for you -- or choose a departure port within driving distance to eliminate that extra planning step. Group cruises are a cinch to book. Cruise lines have plans in place for group travel, eliminating the hassle of coordinating your 20 family members and friends from around the country who want to vacation with you. Book enough cabins -- and you'll get extra perks, including a free fare!
Anyone who's watched "The Love Boat" knows that there's a romance to sea travel. The wind in your hair, the vistas of endless ocean, the stars twinkling above, all may be clichĂŠs but they're real experiences onboard! If you want to rekindle the spark with your sweetie, a cruise vacation provides plenty of together time -- sharing side-by-side lounge chairs by the pool, a table for two at dinner, dancing in the evening or sharing quality time onshore. Cruise lines also have special packages for honeymoons, vow renewals and weddings onboard and onshore.

“MEGXIT’’ THE LATEST CRISIS TO PLAGUE THE ROYAL FAMILY BUCKINGHAM PALACE HAS BEEN BLINDSIDED BY
THE SHOCK ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUSSEX WILL BE STEPPING DOWN FROM ALL ROYAL DUTIES TO SPEND MORE TIME IN NORTH AMERICA WITH THEIR SON ARCHIE. The couple recently issued an extraordinary statement declaring that “they have decided to separate from the broader institution following months of reflection and internal discussion and plan to seek financial independence by sourcing their own private income.’’
Unfortunately this latest Royal dilemma has sent the Royal household into a tail spin, with the spilt causing another major catastrophe to an already fragile family, who are currently dealing with Prince Andrew’s fall from grace following his association with alleged billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
The situation has been compared to the 1936 abdication of King Edward V111, who chose passion over protocol when he gave up the throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson ******** According to the British press, the pair will continue to use the protection officers the monarchy provides, and plan to keep their taxpayer-funded residence with security detail at Frogmore Cottage, allowing them to split their time between Britain and North America. This decision has outraged certain senior members of the Royal family and major media outlets who are consequently now referring to the couple as “spoilt brats.’’
Since the shock announcement was made, Buckingham Palace has stated that the couple would cease to be working members of the Royal Family
and has subsequently formalised a deal with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to exit the Royal Family.
The couple will no longer receive public funds or use their “royal highness’’ titles to represent the monarchy abroad. In a breakthrough announcement, the Queen also added that Harry, Meghan and Archie would always be much loved members of my family. However, she has recognised the challenges they have experienced as
a result of the intense scrutiny over the last two years and supports their wish for a more independent life, reiterating that “It is my whole family’s hope that the exit agreement allows them to start building a happy and more peaceful new life.’’ Unfortunately, Prince Harry has always had a strained relationship with the press, made clear in 2019 when he reprimanded the press for their mistreatment of his wife Meghan, declaring that it was similar to what his mother Diana, Princess of Wales endured before she was killed in a car crash in Paris while being pursued by paparazzi. Consequently, in a recent interview Harry has also confirmed rumours of a rift with his brother Prince William, saying the pair were on “different paths.’’
SINCE BECOMING A MEMBER OF THE ROYAL FAMILY, MEGHAN SEEMS TO HAVE PROVOKED UNWANTED CONTROVERSY, AS A DIRECT RESULT OF HER MIXED ETHNIC HERITAGE AND UNCONVENTIONAL FAMILY. HER LIFE THUS FAR, HAS BEEN LITTERED WITH UNWELCOMED SENSATIONALISM. In particular, the bickering of her extended family, coupled with unwarranted rumours regarding her relationship with other members of The Royal Family and her left wing political views. She backed Hilary Clinton during the 2016 United States presidential election and publicly described Donald Trump as misogynistic. During that same year British News power house “The Guardian’’ concluded that Meghan would become “The most left wing member of The Royal Family.’’ Prompting Royal Historian Robert Lacey to declare. “She is the most feisty and spiky person to marry into The Royal Family since her grandfather in-law Prince Philip.’’ Only time will tell if this latest Royal bombshell will rock The House of Windsor to its core, however leading Australian monarchist David Flint sees the couple’s decision to spilt from the family as “just an evolutionary development’’ which will allow the Duke and Duchess to commit greater time to external roles in their various charities. SURECELL AUSTRALIA Australia's leading provider of PRP and Stem Cell therapy
Healing | Muscles - Injuries - Joints
Are you tired of experiencing unrelenting pain every day, caused by degeneration, muscle tears or other injuries? PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) could be the answer for you! Thanks to modern medicine. We are in the midst of being engulfed globally by an ageing population. Life expectancy has now reached well into our 80’s and 90’s and could potentially reach 100 within the next 20 to 30 years. As a result, we are also encountering degeneration and other ailments. As we mature and age, our body’s ability to repair itself diminishes significantly. Injuries may take longer to heal and osteoarthritis may become more pronounced. PRP is an ‘autologous blood derivative’ meaning that the growth factors and platelets found in the plasma component of our own blood are extracted and utilized to promote cell multiplication and the formation of new tissues, alleviating pain significantly. However, for more advanced arthritis and injury, Adipose-Derived Cell Therapy may be more suitable. The use of Mesenchymal Cells is minimally invasive and a safe procedure. What this means is that after the cells are harvested from our own abdominal fat, they are mixed with PRP, and injected into the affected area, where they are able to promote growth and regeneration by releasing growth factors. This stimulates cell multiplication and promotes the formation of new tissue, which then alleviates pain. This innovative procedure can be performed by one of our expert doctors at one of our Surecell Clinics located in most capital cities in Australia. We are now living in a changing modern society, which means that we could be working well into our seventies, making it necessary to look and feel great all the time. Gone are the days when anyone

BOWLING&LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE is thrilled to announce that we have recently adopted a koala from The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. (Lismore Rose) is a 2 year old female that was abandoned in the Lismore area and is now being cared for by the staff and volunteers at The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.
The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital has been instrumental in treating sick and injured koalas as a direct result of the recent bushfires. Unfortunately, the mid North Coast of NSW including the Port Macquarie Region suffered catastrophic losses during the bushfires which have so far destroyed over 26,000 homes and killed at least 34 people throughout Australia. An estimated one billion animals were also lost with several endangered species driven to extinction. It is feared that significant areas of vital Koala habitat have also been destroyed. The first fires began in July, 2019 on the Mid North Coast and a total of 58 fires have since burnt more than 420,000 hectares of bush across the region, which includes 3,000 hectares of pristine bushland, two thirds of which is regarded as core Koala habitat and food trees. The area is vital to the genetic diversity and strength of the local Koala population, providing an important sanctuary for the remaining Koala population that has miraculously survived the bushfire catastrophe. The Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie and The National Parks and Wildlife Services have spent months searching for injured Koalas following the fires in the area. The Koala Hospital is currently caring for numerous injured Koalas. The primary aim for the hospital is to care for Koalas now and try to ensure that we still have Koalas for generations to come. Despite the substantial loss of property and life, the incredible work of the men and women of The NSW Rural fire Services with the help of reinforcements from New Zealand, Singapore, Canada and the United States were able to save over 16,000 structures and countless lives throughout Australia. The NSW Rural Fire Service is the world’s largest volunteer fire service with over 72,000 members who bravely provide fire and emergency services to more than 95% of New South Wales. Fortunately, recent rain has brought signs of life back to the blackened forests across many regions of Australia ******
The bushfires have also attracted an outpouring of support from big names such as James Packer who donated $5 million through his “Casino Group Crown Resorts.’’ Australian Hollywood star 32
AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
Chris Hemsworth made one of the biggest individual donations to date, pledging $1 million to help with the bushfire recovery and Australian comedian Celeste Barber has raised more than $42 million through her “Facebook fundraising drive’’ for the NSW Rural Fire Service. In addition Stars like Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban and American star Pink have all collectively donated millions of dollars to support devastated communities and fire fighters. EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL AND VOLUNTEER FIRE FIGHTERS HAVE ALL BRAVELY GIVEN THEIR UPMOST TO PROTECT THE HOMES AND LIVES OF FELLOW AUSTRALIANS. IF YOU ARE ABLE TO DONATE MONEY TO THESE SERVICES PLEASE VISIT THEIR OFFICIAL WEBSITES. YOUR DONATION WILL HELP PROVIDE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO SUPPORT FIRE FIGHTERS, VOLUNTEERS AND EVACUEES, WHO ARE NOW RELENTLESSLY ASSISTING WITH A MASSIVE RECOVERY PROGRAMME TO HELP REBUILD LIVES THAT HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY THE BUSH FIRES. Saving the lives of our Koalas and wildlife is also now a major priority that needs to be addressed. We cannot afford to be complacent.
If you are able to help provide some of the necessary funding. Consider “THE ADOPTION OF A KOALA’’ which will help further the work of The Koala Hospital with the rescue and treatment of sick and injured Koalas, and the ultimate release back into their habitat where possible. Adoption also assists with the conservation and expansion of habitats, which also helps provide further education to increase public awareness of Koalas.

Stem cell Nutrition is helping many in Australia… There has been a lot of recent publicity about Stem Cells, and now there is a great natural product that people can take to assist their own adult stem cell migration.
Adult stem cells ARTHRITIS is painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. Inflmmation is part of the body’s natural response to protect joints from damaged cells; to remove irritants and infection, but also to start the healing process. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative disease and often leads to the need for joint replacement surgery.

ONE OF MY GREATEST REGRETS IN LIFE IS THAT I WAS NEVER ABLE TO MEET OR INTERVIEW LOVABLE LARRIKIN AND FORMER AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER BOB HAWKE. HOWEVER, I CONSEQUENTLY JUMPED AT THE OPPORTUNITY TO CATCH-UP WITH HIS DAUGHTER SUE PIETERSHAWKE TO DISCUSS THE MANY ACHIEVEMENTS THAT DEFINED BOB’S AUTHENTICITY AS PRIME MINISTER. Bob Hawke’s death in May, 2019 left our great nation in mourning. Bob, a political giant and a national treasure, will be remembered for making major economic and environmental reforms to the Australian landscape which resulted in unprecedented economic growth. Hawke remains Labor’s longest serving Prime Minister and Australia’s third longest serving Prime Minister.
BOWLING&LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE ARE GIVING ONE LUCKY READER THE OPPORTUNITY TO WIN A COPY OF SUE PIETERS-HAWKE’S LATEST LITERARY OFFERING “REMEMBERING BOB.’’ The book is a celebration of Bob’s life featuring an eclectic mix of moving stories and memories from Bob’s friends, colleagues and ordinary people who
have crossed paths with Bob during his life time. Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Tony Blair, Kim Beazley and Bill Shorten are just a few political heavy weights who contribute stories and recollections, along with sporting heroes Jack Newton and cricket legend Dennis Lillee.
Bob’s eldest daughter Sue was inspired to facilitate the book at Bob’s memorial service, after listening to numerous tales about her famous father from people who loved and admired him from all walks of life. The book is edited to perfection by Sue and captures the love and appreciation that was apparent from the Australian public. Sue Pieters-Hawke was born in Canberra in 1957 and grew up in the beachside suburb of Sandringham in Melbourne. She is the eldest of Bob and Hazel’s 3 children. Her recollections of her childhood are happy ones, which consequently exposed her and her sibling to an enormous range of people and experiences, due to the nature of Bob’s work. Sue went on to win a scholarship to Firbank Grammar school in Melbourne and then studied law at Monash University. Sue is a writer, speaker and a passionate activist for Dementia Reform. Sue is also the National Ambassador for Alzheimer’s Australia and has released 2 bestselling books about her mother’s struggle with dementia. 34

Q & A with SUE PIETERS-HAWKE ******** When was the vision for this book conceived.
SUE : The idea for the book was conceived at my father’s memorial service and wake, when I was inundated with “an outpouring of love’’ and wonderful stories and memories about him. However, some time before dad’s death we talked about other people’s memories. The idea of the book featuring other people’s input was the last idea we’d had before he died. The idea of accumulating stories and memories seems an overwhelming task, was there ever any hesitation to go ahead with the book.
SUE : No never, I had a wonderful support team helping me, and for me it was a “LABOUR OF LOVE’’ and reiterated the immense love and respect people had for my father. What do you think was the most outstanding contribution your father made to Australia.
SUE : My father’s commitment to “The immigration Policy’’ affirmed that Australia remains a multicultural nation, plus the commitment to education and healthcare.
The introduction of The Superannuation scheme was also an outstanding achievement because it ensures financial stability for the future of all workers, who can now enjoy retirement benefits. Do you have a favourite “recollection’’ in the book
SUE : I don’t have a favourite, I think they are all amazing and unique.
I inform Sue that my favourite recollection in the book is by former Liberal Party Leader John Hewson, who captured the magnitude of Hawke’s appeal, when he recalled that “Bob Hawke was certainly the best Labor leader since WW11, and arguably our best Prime Minister since then.’’ It was an absolute pleasure speaking with Sue about her father Bob Hawke, who not only reformed Australia’s economy, but also our nation. Royal Navy Pilot Saves Lives from
Fires in Australia
PO Jason Wickman (RAN) asseses the Grose Valley bushfire, Blue Mountains National Park, aboard Lt. Cmdr. Grimmer's helicopter
By Royal Navy News 01-09-2020 01:54:00 by Les Taylor A Royal Navy helicopter pilot has helped save countless lives from the apocalyptic fires devastating Australia. Lieutenant Commander Nick Grimmer has been in near round-the-clock action for two months flying rescue missions, evacuating people otherwise trapped by the flames.
Commander Grimmer’s helicopter launched to search for people cut off away from the beach as well as to survey the extent of the conflagration and the damage it had caused.
The 35-year-old, originally from Great Yarmouth, is on a threeyear exchange in Australia, swapping submarine-hunting Merlin helicopters at RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall for troop carrying MRH90 helicopters based at HMAS Albatross, 100 miles south of Sydney. The Royal Australian Navy’s 808 Squadron – specialists in disaster relief operations – have been in constant action since November providing assistance to people whose lives have been threatened by the fires.
The MRH90 Flight Commander was enjoying a rare break from flying, getting ready to enjoy New Year celebrations when his flight – five aircrew and 14 engineers – was ordered to join the amphibious ship HMAS Choules as the bushfires engulfed the south-eastern tip of Australia. Inhabitants of the small town of Mallacoota fled to the beach when the flames could no longer be held back. They spent a few days on the sands before Choules arrived to take them off.
The bulk of the evacuees were collected by landing craft; Lieutenant 40

<NSW RFS firefighter prepares to winch down from Lt. Cmdr. Grimmer's helicopter, Grose Valley fire (RN) Despite wall-to-wall global media coverage, Lieutenant Commander Grimmer says nothing can prepare anyone for the reality on the ground.
“I don’t think people in the UK can comprehend the size or gravity of them. There are towns without power, without communications with the outside world, where nine out of ten buildings have been destroyed.” Lieutenant Commander Grimmer added.
The pilot has been flying for up to ten hours a day alongside his colleagues in the most difficult of conditions, with crews expected to make life and death decisions on almost every sortie.
“People tend to look after their properties until the very last minute. When the time comes to leave, the roads are often already blocked by fire so there’s no escape," he said.“People either retreat to a ‘cocoon’ in the center of their homes, or they look for evacuation. Saving them just in time is extremely gratifying,” the naval aviator explained.
The Choules – formerly in UK service as RFA Largs Bay – was turned into “something of a Noah’s Ark” as alongside around 1,100 people evacuated from Mallacoota were 117 dogs, four cats, a parakeet and a rabbit. They were safely transported along the coast to Melbourne.
“WATCHING PEOPLE – EVERYONE FROM A BABY OF TWO MONTHS TO AN ELDERLY LADY IN HER 90S – GET OFF IN MELBOURNE, RELIEVED, SAYING ‘GOODBYE’, ‘THANK YOU’ AND SHAKING EVERYONE’S HANDS WAS VERY GRATIFYING, DEFINITELY THE HIGHLIGHT AND MADE ALL OUR EFFORTS SEEM WORTHWHILE.”
“You have to fly low because of the visibility – then suddenly you find yourself in thick smoke and are forced to either turn back or climb rapidly to avoid running into mountains. There’s a fine line between what you can do and what is not possible, with risks being constantly re-evaluated," he said. “It’s frequently difficult to breathe. Your clothes, in fact the entire aircraft stinks of smoke and everyone is exhausted. But it’s also by far the most rewarding thing we’ve done.” Lieutenant Commander Grimmer spent six months in Sierra Leone as part of Britain’s efforts to halt the spread of the Ebola virus in 2014-15 – another challenging but rewarding mission – but nothing in his 12 years in the Royal Navy compares with the past two months in South-eastern Australia. “Every day you go through the spectrum of emotions – from intense lows to highs,” he explained. “I’m an animal lover and seeing the impact on wildlife is heart-breaking – all too often we are seeing dead animals who have succumbed to the fires in fields we are landing in.”
“We recently winched down our aircrewman from 150 feet to a man on his porch. He was fine, his house was safe, but his wife had fled the fire a few days before. She had no idea whether he was alive or the house was standing due to no power or communications. We were able to tell her both were safe – that was a wonderful feeling.”

A Day In The Life Of Les Taylor 'A SHOT OF WHISKEY' - In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a "shot" of whiskey.
BUYING THE FARM - This is synonymous with dying. During WW1 soldiers were given life insurance policies worth $5,000. This was about the price of an average farm so if you died you "bought the farm" for your survivors.
IRON CLAD CONTRACT - This came about from the ironclad ships of the Civil War. It meant something so strong it could not be broken.
RIFF RAFF - The Mississippi River was the main way
of travelling from north to south. Riverboats carried passengers and freight but they were expensive so most people used rafts. Everything had the right of way over rafts which were considered cheap. The steering oar on the rafts was called a "riff " and this transposed into riff-raff, meaning low class.
COBWEB - The Old English word for “spider" was "cob". SHIP STATE ROOMS - Travelling by steamboat was
considered the height of comfort. Passenger cabins on the boats were not numbered. Instead they were named after states. To this day cabins on ships are called staterooms.
SLEEP TIGHT- Early beds were made with a wooden frame. Ropes were tied across the frame in a crisscross pattern. A straw mattress was then put on top of the ropes. Over time the ropes stretched, causing the bed to sag. The owner would then tighten the ropes to get a better night’s sleep.
SHOWBOAT - These were floating theatres built on a barge
that was pushed by a steamboat. These played small towns along the Mississippi River . Unlike the boat shown in the movie "Showboat" these did not have an engine. They were gaudy and attention grabbing which is why we say someone who is being the life of the party is “showboating".
42
AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOWLING & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
OVER A BARREL - In the days before CPR a drowning
victim would be placed face down over a barrel and the barrel would be rolled back and forth in an effort to empty the lungs of water. It was rarely effective. If you are over a barrel you are in deep trouble.
BARGE IN - Heavy freight was moved along the Mississippi
in large barges pushed by steamboats. These were hard to control and would sometimes swing into piers or other boats. People would say they "barged in".
HOGWASH - Steamboats carried both people and animals.
Since pigs smelled so bad they would be washed before being put on board. The mud and other filth that was washed off was considered useless “hog wash".
CURFEW - The word "curfew" comes from the French phrase
"couvre-feu", which means "cover the fire". It was used to describe the time of blowing out all lamps and candles. It was later adopted into Middle English as “curfeu" which later became the modern "curfew". In the early American colonies homes had no real fireplaces so a fire was built in the centre of the room. In order to make sure a fire did not get out of control during the night it was required that, by an agreed upon time, all fires would be covered with a clay pot called-a “curfew".
BARRELS OF OIL - When the first oil wells were drilled
they had made no provision for storing the liquid so they used water barrels. That is why, to this day, we speak of barrels of oil rather than gallons.
HOT OFF THE PRESS - As the paper goes through the
rotary printing press friction causes it to heat up. Therefore, if you grab the paper right off the press it’s hot. The expression means to get immediate information.
There, don't you feel smarter now?
GETTING ‘BOWLED OVER’ BY WRIST PAIN? The ABS reports that lawn bowls is the fifth most popular sport in Australia today especially among seniors, as it provides low impact exercise in a social setting.
Despite reporting few injuries, participants are at greater risk of developing one particular condition than in most other sports - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).
CTS is the single most commonly diagnosed hand condition and accounts for about 90% of all nerve entrapments in the general population. It is particularly prevalent within the lawn bowls community, often referred to as “Bowler’s Wrist”.
CTS can be a debilitating condition, defined as a chronic compression/injury of the median nerve in the front of the wrist. It is caused by increased pressure within the carpal tunnel (a narrow anatomical passageway in the wrist), leading to impaired function of the median nerve. This can be due to injury (e.g., fracture/ dislocation); the size of the carpal tunnel itself; nerve damage (e.g., from diabetes); inflammatory conditions (e.g., arthritis); obesity; fluid retention; other medical conditions; and
(specifically) sustained, repetitive tasks (e.g., bowling).
Common symptoms include aching, numbness, tingling and/or burning in the palm of one or both hands (often more pronounced in the dominant hand), as well as intermittent “electric shocks” in the wrist/hand. Weakness of handgrip is also common. Symptoms often increase at night and/or early in the morning (this often impairs sleep) and are often exacerbated by repetitive tasks (e.g. repeatedly throwing a heavy ball – or bowling). CTS symptoms also occur frequently when driving. Patients may “flick” the affected hand in an attempt to alleviate symptoms and often experience impaired grip strength/manual dexterity or start “dropping things”.
Many bowlers may “play through” the pain; so as not to ‘let down’ teammates or ‘miss out on the fun’, or due to the misconception the pain will simply ‘go away on its own’. However, when adequate rest/treatment is not sought, the symptoms of CTS often worsen, resulting in the need for even more time off the green. There is also the risk of further nerve-injury, as continued playing will likely exacerbate the condition. The good news is that CTS is both an easily diagnosable and treatable condition - with the right testing and advice.
Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are the “gold standard” in diagnostic testing for CTS, as they provide objective information on the function of the median nerve across the carpal tunnel.
Corbett Neurophysiology Services (CNS) has been servicing local bowlers for more than twenty-five years, providing bulk-billed, premium quality nerve tests. We currently offer short waiting times, so there is no need to prolong your suffering (or sit out the next season).
Additionally, your results will be explained to you clearly and immediately by one of our highly experienced Neurologists; and a comprehensive report will be sent to your Referring Doctor within 24 hours, so you can commence treatment immediately.
CNS is the only large private bulk-billing neurophysiology diagnostic service in QLD and Northern NSW. Our clinics are conveniently located in the Brisbane CBD, Ipswich and the Gold Coast.
We use Australia’s only Cadwell NCS & EMG state-of-the-art beta software, to ensure the utmost accuracy of all results; and (to our knowledge) we are the only clinic in Australia routinely performing Quantitative Electromyography (qEMG) to ensure more comprehensive, objective results than can be achieved with traditional testing methods. Our team is highly qualified and experienced, so you can rest assured that you’re receiving the best possible advice and treatment recommendations.
