Welcome back to the AJ Bell Stadium for a game everyone has been looking forward to against the league leaders Leicester Tigers, led by an old friend of mine in Steve Borthwick. On behalf of everyone at the club, can I welcome Steve, his coaching staff and his team to Manchester. I’ve got huge respect for Steve and what he’s achieved at Leicester. We’re both young DoRs, learning our trade and I know how tough it can be to turn an organisation in a different direction. That’s what he’s done. They’re all singing from the same hymn sheet and they’re all on form.

the gain line, having a dominant set piece and controlling territory. The X-factor and ability to take opportunities when they are there is what separates the good teams from the very best. We know that going into this game today, our fundamentals have to be as good as they have ever been.

There are fundamentals in any successful team, such as winning

We know that if we don’t get our defensive maul right, they’re

going to kick territory, win penalties and beat us. They’ve battered teams recently in the scrum and won penalties at will, so we know we’ve got to start a maul brawl and a scrum scrap. We have to match what they bring in the key areas if we want to have any chance. They kick the ball a lot so what we do in all the little battles after those kicks will probably determine the outcome if we can get dominance in the set piece. Last time out against Ospreys I was really happy with the way we played. But we’re past halfway in the season now so we have to use that Ospreys game to build something for the second half. We’re fully aware that we have to win. We have to win every week and provided we keep all our lads fit and fresh, we have the talent to do that. That’s what Leicester did and we’ve got that in us too. Leicester Tigers is a huge one for us today because we want to make a statement of intent. If we are going to have any chance of being in contention for silverware it needs to happen now. That’s the challenge. We’re well up for it. I want to give a quick mention to AJ MacGinty, who plays his 100th game for the club today. How he has applied himself this season, knowing that he’s leaving is a measure of the

man. Before I joined the club, I wasn’t aware of how good he was but then most people weren’t. I know nothing about decision making from ten but hopefully I’ve helped to create an environment where he can thrive. I feel like he’s probably playing the best rugby of his career at the moment and it’s a shame that he won’t be going head-to-head with George Ford today. We’re looking forward to seeing how our new signing goes in the Six Nations. Maybe we might see him in tandem with Raffi and Manu at some stage during the tournament. Who knows. It’s certainly a tantalising prospect for next season at the AJ Bell. But for now, that can wait. All our focus is on today and the massive challenge in front of us. Enjoy the game. Alex.

This week sees Sharks’ very own Eagle AJ MacGinty hit 100 appearances for the club, but he’s not the only one to have reached that special landmark in recent weeks. Byron McGuigan brought up his century in the New Year’s Day clash with Wasps and so did academy graduate Luke James.

The full-back, who cheered from the stands at Edgeley Park as a youngster and made his debut for Sale at the age of 18 against Saracens in 2017, found a place in the matchday squad hard to come by in the early part of the season, as Simon Hammersley made the 15 shirt his own. But now Luke is back in favour and has started three of the last four games. So what does he remember about his first game as a Shark – and how has having older brother Sam alongside him in the Sale back line helped? He said: “I wasn’t really supposed to play. I was part of the squad as a travelling reserve but we had a few injuries and then I think AJ pulled out with another injury quite late. It was the first time I had even gone with the senior squad as a reserve so I was already nervous, but then the coaches told me I was going to be on the bench. I was sharing a room with another young lad and I remember just being so nervous.

I WAS THAT FAN. I WAS THE ONE HIGH FIVING THE PLAYERS BY THE SIDE OF THE TUNNEL SO I KNOW HOW MUCH IT MEANS. FANS THINK WE’RE DOING THEM A FAVOUR BUT IT’S INCREDIBLE FOR US TOO. “I didn’t know any of the calls, but actually looking back, it was good for me to be thrown in at the deep end. It was a real sink or swim situation. “That season I played maybe ten or 15 games which was far more than I had expected. “Sam was huge for me at the start because he was already established in the team. At the time, we lived together so we could go home and bounce stuff off each other. He was always on hand for me to ask questions or get feedback on how I had played. “We’re a really close family and my parents always had season tickets 13

when we were growing up. Sam and I have both moved out now but we still live pretty close to each other. “Our parents very rarely miss a game. It’s brilliant to see them in the crowd.” After a strong pre-season, Luke missed on selection in the early Premiership games. But rather than get frustrated, the 22-yearold got his head down and worked hard on the areas of his game that needed improvement. And now he’s looking forward to doing his bit to push your Sharks up the Premiership table.

and no-one is happy when they’re left out. “We’ve got plenty to play for. The Premiership table is so tight at the moment so a place in the top four is definitely still not out of the question. And we’ve got the Champions Cup too. There’s no reason why we can’t go to Bristol and win and then who knows after that.” Fans favourite Luke grew up watching Mark Cueto et al from the Edgeley Park stands so he understands exactly what it means for the players to speak to supporters after games.

He said: “I didn’t play too much at the end of last season and Alex gave me a few things to work – stuff like my kicking, being more vocal and improving my control of the back field. I felt like I had a good pre-season but then I didn’t play too much in the first eight games of this season.

He added: “I was that fan. I was the one high fiving the players by the side of the tunnel so I know how much it means. Fans think we’re doing them a favour but it’s incredible for us too.

“As a young player it’s a hard balance to strike. I’m naturally quite calm so I’m not going to be banging on Alex’s office door demanding to play. But I do need to show that I’m ready and I’m pushing hard. We’re all super competitive and desperate to play

“I know we’ve got a big crowd in for today’s game so I can’t wait.”

“The support we get from the stands means so much so it’s an honour to be able to give a little bit back.

A thumping win in Europe, academy talent all over the pitch and a definite feel-good atmosphere around the club. As we head into 2022 it all makes for an exciting first home Premiership game of the year against (nearly) unbeaten league leaders Leicester Tigers today. It’s getting to that time of the year where, as internationals are called up, some teams start to suffer while others prosper and no doubt there will be some movement in the table. Given we can’t really go much further down, the only way is up! Last week’s result at home to Ospreys was just what the doctor

(or should that be DoR?) ordered to give us momentum to come back into the domestic campaign, but even the most pessimistic of Sale fans has to be ecstatic with the manner in which that result was delivered with a flurry of academy talent scoring the tries. Bevan Rodd looks like an absolute world beater, Ewan Ashman is not far behind him, and Tom Roebuck and Aaron Reed on the wings finished their chances and brought a fizz and electricity to the AJ Bell pitch that seemed to have gone missing for the last few seasons. That’s without mentioning Raffi Quirke and Tom and Ben Curry, from whom we’ve come to expect that level of performance from every week, but should never be under appreciated just what a high level they are performing at, at such a young age.

We could wax lyrical about the academy all day (anyone who has ever listened to James for more than two minutes can confirm this) but against Ospreys we saw some great performances all over the pitch. One of the best sights over the last couple of games has been the reactions of the whole squad to the tries for Roebuck, Reed and especially Jack Metcalf last week – it shows the squad togetherness and brotherhood that was so in evidence last season and has been a feature of Axe’s reign so far.

audience of ITV viewers as the Premiership’s free to air coverage begins. Let’s show the country what we’re about on the field and more importantly showcase this loud and passionate fanbase supporting them every step of the way. South Stand – you lead and everyone else follow. Enjoy the game!

Alex, James & Lewis

So, we turn our attention to the minor matter of trying to do what no team had done before the 9th of January and beat Leicester (Wasps – not only do you start with Pizzagate but you’re now ruining the hyperbole of our programme notes. Inconsiderate.) We welcome back some old Sale faces from opposite ends of the age spectrum in Richard Wigglesworth and Dan Kelly, and know that nothing but our best level of performance will do against them and a team that Steve Borthwick has worked wonders with since he came in last season. The Ospreys game showed how exciting we can be, but today is a massive step up. But make no mistake, we can beat this Leicester team, and it’s a huge opportunity to put a marker down, not only to everyone in the stadium today, but also a much wider

CLUB SpOtLIght CLUB 100

Bolton RUFC. Founded: 1872. Ground: Avenue Street (impossible to forget) in Bolton. League: North 2 West (Level 7)

Sharklinks: Conor McGrath - played for Bolton from u7 to u17 before signing for Sale. Gareth Stocks - Arrived from Marlow, Buckinghamshire when his family relocated ‘Oop North’. As a

youngster, he was hidden in the 3rd team for several weeks until selection committee heard about him! Played 1st team for 3 seasons, then signed for Sale over the summer. Quickly made Sharks 1st team, playing at Centre and Fly Half against the likes of Will Carling & Jeremy Guscott. He got 2 caps for Emerging England. As the game was turning professional, he quit rugby to concentrate on the family business.

Unsung Heroes: Like many rugby clubs across the UK Bolton run a thriving Junior section built on the hard work and dedication of a company of volunteers. These are our “unsung heroes”. Every Sunday morning at Avenue Street around 230 juniors are coached to develop their rugby skills. Bolton run 12 teams from under 6’s right up to Senior Colts. More than half of the First XV are home grown which is a testament to our unsung heroes. Their work isn’t confined to on-field activities…bacon butty chefs provide food aplenty alongside our club merchandise sellers, groundsmen etc. Bolton are no different to any other club…it’s the unsung heroes that give our Juniors the opportunity to become heroes themselves.

Favourite Sharks Moment: 16th April 2011 the day Sale Sharks came to Bolton and played a Premiership game at the Reebok against London Irish. The Bolton News reported “The game saw the home ground of Bolton Wanderers become the 30th ground to host a Premiership Rugby game and a crowd in excess of 16,000 were not left disappointed.” 45

Sale players held coaching sessions with our Juniors as part of the buildup and several Bolton juniors were ball boys / girls at the big game.

Bolton’s Big News: This year the club are celebrating their 150th anniversary. They played their first ever game against Southport Rugby Club in 1872. Fittingly the two clubs are due to meet in the league this month and the fixture is set to kick off a series of commemorative, fundraising events throughout the year. One of the highlights will be the visit to Bolton of around 70 young Italian people from Briganti Rugby Club in Sicily. Bolton reached out to Briganti after reading an article in The Times covering the burning of their Clubhouse and Team bus by local drug gangs (mafioso) after the club set up an after school club to take kids off the dangerous streets of Librino outside Catania.

The Bolton Chairman takes up the story… “Everyone who has ever played or watched rugby will know that we have each other’s backs both on and off the pitch, so when we spotted the article our instinct was to ask how can we help?” “What followed is the building of a remarkable relationship between the two clubs. Fundraising for the visit in August is ongoing and we have plans to send teams from our club to play over in Sicily where there is a thriving rugby scene. The future for both clubs looks very bright” “We are looking to raise £20,000 to make sure that the Briganti youngsters remember their visit to the North West of England for the rest of their lives. If anyone reading this article would like to contribute either financially or by giving some of their time please email the club via:
