Welcome back to the AJ Bell Stadium for a what I’m sure will be another entertaining, physical challenge against a really good Northampton Saints team. First of all, let me welcome Chris Boyd and his staff to Manchester. Chris has been in position as Director of Rugby now for a few years and he’s built a team capable of being a real challenger in the Gallagher Premiership this season. Like us, they’re missing one or two international players at the

moment, and also like us, they had a disappointing result last weekend. But we know they are much better than what they showed last week against Leicester and we’re preparing for them to be at their very best this evening at the AJ Bell Stadium. I’m expecting a big reaction from our lads tonight as well because

we know that last week against Worcester Warriors we weren’t good enough collectively or individually. It would be easy to overreact, but hitting the nuclear button and throwing away all the good work we’ve been doing on and off the field this season is the worst thing we could do. To achieve consistency on the pitch, we need to be consistent in selection, as well as in the way we train, and in the way we apply ourselves mentally. To rip it all up now would be to say that what we’re doing has been wrong and we know that’s not the case because apart from last week, our performance levels have been really good. That said, when you lose in the manner that we did last week, you carry it. It’s human nature to carry it. Our job is to make sure we take the lessons out of what happened, but make sure that it doesn’t affect the way we train and prepare. On Monday morning we had a really open, honest meeting, led by the players and it threw up a few things we could all be doing better during the week and on a matchday. Now we’re really excited to see how the players put that into practice in front of our own supporters who provided such an incredible

atmosphere the last time we were at home against Quins. We’ll be helped by the return of a couple of key men. Last time we welcomed Saints to the north west, Akker van der Merwe was man of the match as we won 32-23. We have real strength in depth at hooker but it’s a huge boost to everyone to have Akker back this evening, along with AJ MacGinty. Finally, this evening will see the club mark Remembrance Day and I’m delighted to welcome a number of exservice personnel who have been involved with the Sharks Forces programme, run by the Sharks Community Trust, to the stadium. It’s so important that we, as a club, show our respect for our servicemen and women and I hope you all have a great night. One of the great things about the Premiership is that when you have a bad performance, you get the chance to put it right the very next week. We’re all looking forward to that opportunity this evening. Alex. 9

It’s been a stopstart season so far for Sharks’ very own Eagle. But six weeks after picking up a neck injury in the draw at London Irish, AJ MacGinty is back in the 10 shirt this evening, starting a Gallagher Premiership game for only the second time this season. And while some players might have taken the opportunity to have a rest away from rugby, AJ has been watching plenty of

games to make sure he hits the ground running – starting today. “I watch a lot of games, but often with the commentary off, or if I’m in the stadium I like to be high up so I can see everything that’s going on,” AJ said. “I never watch a game from start to finish on TV – I’m constantly pausing it to see how an attack has lined up or to see how a team has done something differently. “I’ve always been like that. I’m a West Ham supporter and I remember a few years ago I went to the Etihad Stadium to watch Manchester City v West Ham. Our seats were right at the back, as high as possible and I loved it because I could see exactly what was happening and how Pep Guardiola was lining his team up. You see so much more than you ever could on TV.” As the captain of the USA team, and a big American Football fan, AJ has also taken plenty of inspiration from one of the NFL’s biggest names.

“I love watching Tom Brady and the way he communicates with the team,” he said. “How he’s completely in sync with the rest of the team. That’s how it should be and I think it’s maybe where we haven’t been quite clicking this season. “Last weekend against Worcester that stats were incredible. It’s probably the longest time we’ve ever spent in an opposition’s 22, but yet we only scored 14 points. Against Northampton we need to win the kicking game, and get territory, but we need to turn it into points. “This week has been all about how we attack with purpose, in sync and how we turn that pressure and that territory into points against a really good Saints side who like to throw the ball around. “We know we need to shut them down and put in a massive, collective effort on both sides of the ball if we’re going to win.” Sharks’ defeat against Worcester last time out was their fourth loss of the season – but AJ says he’s seen plenty to be positive about while he’s been unavailable. “Of course we’re disappointed 13

with how it’s gone this season but we can’t dwell on it because that takes away your ability to perform in the next game,” he said. “One thing I’ve learned through my career is that you have to stay in the moment, stay neutral and that negativity has a massive impact on your ability to perform. “We can’t get carried away when we win or when we lose. “Against Northampton, we need to be in sync, and the same thought processes have to be going through all 15 heads. When that happens, that’s so powerful.”

well as young scrum halves Raffi Quirke, Gus Warr and Nye Thomas. “The young lads have been outstanding. Their ability and their composure have really impressed me. Getting Premiership action at their age is incredible experience for them. But they deserve it for the work they’ve been putting in. “It’s an exciting time for the club but we need to get back on track starting this weekend. It’s a massive opportunity for us and I can’t wait.”

In AJ’s absence, academy graduates Kieran Wilkinson and Tom Curtis have stepped up to the plate – and the 31 year old says he sees a big future for them, as

Eddie Jones has confirmed his squad for the Autumn nations Series. The England head coach names Sale Sharks’ Tom Curry and Manu Tuilagi in his squad alongside uncapped Sharks academy star Raffi Quirke. The squad will travel to Jersey on Monday 25 October for a five-day training camp before returning to England ahead of their trio of home fixtures against Tonga, Australia and South Africa. Jones has included four uncapped players. Nic Dolly and Tommy Freeman receive their first callups, alongside Mark Atkinson and

Raffi Quirke who joined up with the squad last month for a short training camp. Eight players who made their debuts in England’s summer series have also been selected in: Jamie Blamire, Callum Chick, Trevor Davison, Alex Dombrandt, Adam Radwan, Harry Randall, Marcus Smith and Freddie Steward.

Owen Farrell will be England captain and Maro Itoje is in line to make his 50th Test during the Autumn Nations Series. “This is a young but very good, talented squad who have all earned their places. It is one of the most competitive squads I have ever picked,” said Jones. “There are a number of disappointed players who haven’t been selected, but they know what they need to do and no door is closed to any player. “We’re looking forward to three tough Test matches. Tonga always play a strong, physical game and Australia and South

Africa have had extended periods together and will be a good challenge for us. “Our aim each week will be to get better and better as we work towards the Rugby World Cup in 2023.” England will first face Tonga on Saturday 6 November (3.15pm KO). They will then host Australia on Saturday 13 November (5.30pm KO) and in their final game, take on world champions South Africa on Saturday 20 November (3.15pm KO). All matches will be live on Amazon Prime Video Sport and TalkSPORT.

They always seem to turn up against us when they’re at home do Worcester, don’t they? We thought now that Francois Hougaard had left, we wouldn’t struggle quite as much against the Warriors given he used to have his one world-beater game a year against us. Instead step into the breach Jamie Shillcock, kicking like Andy Goode and running like Beauden Barrett. It doesn’t do to dwell on such results, so we won’t - perhaps it’s best just be thankful that it wasn’t televised. Our trip to the Midlands the week before had been a more positive one, against possibly the strongest Leicester side for some time, with Youngs and Ford at the peak of

their form. With our many injuries and internationals missing, we put in a gritty performance and matched them, and were unlucky not to come away with a losing bonus point. After that performance it was easy to be optimistic, weighing up the disappointment of the loss against the encouraging fact it was away from home, with an inexperienced team and off the back of a stuttering start to the season. As we said, we shan’t linger on The-Performance-That-MustNot-Be-Named but safe to say optimism was in shorter supply one week later. Moving swiftly on, we return home after 2 weeks on the road, likely to give us a much needed boost. We welcome to the AJ Bell a Northampton Saints side who

had a less than ideal derby against Leicester last week and no doubt we can expect a big reaction from them. Threats come from all over the pitch, Tom Wood and Lewis Ludlam in the back row providing experience and more than enough physicality to match ours, and a skilful and pacy backline which has been bolstered by Courtnall Skosan, with 5 tries in 2 games in his Premiership career so far. For the uninitiated, that kind of impact is called a “Denny Solomona”.

after last week, well we equally expect to see a Sharks response. The players will be ready to make amends with a big performance, so let’s get behind them and create a great Saturday night atmosphere at the AJ Bell for Bonfire Night weekend – it’s going to be explosive!

Alex, James & Lewis

As for Sale, well we’ve recently welcomed back both Rob Du Preez and AJ MacGinty back into the fold after spells out through injury, after Kieran Wilkinson and Tom Curtis performed admirably in their absence. The injury crisis seems to be abating fingers crossed, with more and more players coming back into the side, and our charge back up the table begins in earnest. Of course we will be without 3 fantastic players in Tom Curry, Many Tuilagi and Raffi Quirke today as they make up Eddie’s England squad for Tonga game, and a huge good luck to them – we’re hoping to see them light up the international stage as they’ve lit up the AJ Bell this season. We mentioned earlier that we’re expecting a Saints response today

Sale Sharks Women won their first match in the Allianz Cup in emphatic style with home victory against Loughborough.

There was a big crowd at Heywood Road to watch our girls this weekend, and nerves were initially on show from Sharks.

Loughborough scored early – the worst possible start – and seemed dominant in the pack.

Sale Sharks Women 43-15 Loughborough Lightning Slowly but surely however Sharks shifted the tide, electric line-speed in defence forcing the errors from the visitors. The attacking flow followed soon after, lovely quick service from Mhairi Grieve at the back of the ruck saw Lizzie Duffy cross for Sharks first try of the game. inches of space, her powerful handoff was all she needed to break the gain-line on countless occasions. There were too many stand-out performances to do justice in here – Bawden was one, Lizzie Duffy had an accomplished game at fly-half, Beth Stafford was a true leader on her return, trucking the ball up again and again. All in all this was a special performance from the ladies and their second win in a row.

Dominant on all fronts, Sharks scored three before the break, including a lovely pitch-long effort from Hollie Bawden, set up exquisitely by debutant Lisa Thomson. Bawden went on to score four tries in the match and was a constant menace on the wing. Given mere

Mission Complete for 8 schools after an action packed first half term of the programme. The first set of schools have come to the end of their exciting 6 week rugby programme where many have had the chance to experience rugby for the first time. It’s a project we created to give an opportunity to kids in our local area, to learn about the game but importantly learn about the values that are the foundations to being a Shark – Togetherness, Fearlessness, Pride, Humility Passion – and how they can relate to these in every day school life.

Our ambition is to reach as many schools in the area and allow as many children as possible to have a fun and engaging experience with Sale Sharks. Mission Sharks has had 400 year 5 and year 6 pupils from 8 different local primary schools developing their rugby and sporting ability through sessions centred around the clubs core values which have been delivered by our excellent schools coaches.

The sessions place great emphasis on developing people both on and off the pitch at every level and the chance to not only play but enjoy the game of rugby. One school was lucky enough to be treated to a visit from local lads, Connor Doherty and Tumy Onasanya where they got stuck in for some very competitive tag rugby, with Tumy’s side coming out on top. To the 400 children from the following 8 primary schools, thank you for giving it absolutely everything and always doing it with a smile on your face, we can’t wait to see you again next year…

• Forest Gate Academy • Summerville Primary School • Woodhouse Primary School • Holy Cross and All Saints

Primary School • Barton Moss Primary School • Moorfield Primary School • Partington central Academy • Manchester Grammar Junior School Your mission is now complete.

Everyone at Sale Sharks was devastated in June when Sean Browne, aged 32, passed away following a short illness. Sean was a regular participant at Sharks Community Trust’s Down Syndrome sessions held fortnightly at the Carrington Training Ground. Sean’s death was a complete shock to his family, friends and teammates. Sean was a very fun, loving and caring man. Most importantly he would lighten up any room he entered and any field he played on. His smile was contagious and his

love for life and the ability to see the good in everything was extraordinary.   Sean was a huge Sale Sharks fan and attended many games at the AJ Bell stadium proudly wearing his Sale Sharks shirt. Sean will be greatly missed at matches and at the Down Syndrome rugby sessions. Ever since the Trust started coaching with Stockport All Stars mixed ability team on a Sunday, Sean has never missed a session, his commitment to rugby was next to none!  Since the sad news, everyone at Sharks Community Trust and Sale Sharks have been thinking

about how Sean’s legacy can be continued and have decided to rename the Down Syndrome rugby sessions in his honour. Therefore with immediate effect, the fortnightly sessions will be called the ‘Crusaders Fin Club’. Kevin Browne, Sean’s dad, said, “Sean was immensely proud of his association with Sale Sharks. During lockdown he never missed watching the games on TV.  On the 21 March 2021, we watched the match against the London Irish. Sean became very excited when he noticed that the Sharks players were all wearing odd socks. The commentator later confirmed that this was to celebrate the fact that the match was taking

place on Worlds Down Syndrome Day, an official global awareness day to promote the interest of persons with Down Syndrome. The Sharks were the only professional team to join in the celebration of this special day. Being involved with the Sharks rugby programme was not only great physical exercise for Sean, the sessions are great fun and provide much needed opportunities for Sean and his friends to socialise and be part of a team.”

Sharks Community Trust has won a £10,000 Movement for Good award from Ecclesiastical Insurance Group. Sharks Community Trust is one of 30 charities chosen by a panel of judges to receive £10,000 as part of specialist insurer Ecclesiastical’s Movement for Good awards, which is giving £1million to good causes this year.

The funding will be used for the ‘Positive Futures’ programme which will offer a targeted ‘sport inspired’ community intervention to young adults in Manchester who are at heightened risk of health and social inequality and risk-taking behaviour due to being either homeless or vulnerably housed. The awards are designed to help charities make a real difference in their communities. More than 1,000 charities applied for the funding and the winning projects were selected against four criteria: impact and effectiveness, sustainability, innovation, and care and compassion.
