Welcome back to the AJ Bell for our first fixture of 2022, and on behalf of all the players and staff at the club, I’d like to wish you a very happy new year. I know it’s a challenging time for everyone at the moment with increased Covid restrictions in place, but we really do appreciate your support and even though one or two of you might be nursing hangovers from last night’s celebrations, I know you’ll give the boys plenty of energy today as they take on a very talented Wasps side led by Lee Blackett and his excellent team of coaches. Wasps have had injuries but that’s allowed them to give opportunities to some really talented young players. I watched their game against
London Irish last week and I was really impressed with what I saw, so we know we’re taking on a team today, who will be brimming full of enthusiasm, energy and confidence and in great form. I’m expecting a humdinger! We’re looking at it as the perfect challenge to start off a year which we feel can still be a hugely successful one. We know we need
to put a run of wins together to get close to the top four but we’re confident we have the talent in the squad to do that.
team that we’ve picked today because they’ve got the chance to put a real marker down and start 2022 with a bang.
Our last game was on December 12, and the enforced break has been tough for everyone. These lads are professional players, not professional trainers so we’re chomping at the bit to show what we can do in front of you today. But I promise that we haven’t let the intensity of our training drop at all. I’ve always maintained that if you train well, you play well and we’ve trained really well over the past few weeks.
I don’t know if any of you have made new year’s resolutions, but as a squad that’s what we’ve been talking about this week. We know we haven’t had the consistency that we want so far this season, but the start of a new year gives us the perfect chance to put that right. Here’s to a brilliant 2022. Alex.
Of course, you never know how well prepared you are until you play, but we’ve tried to put any uncertainty to the back of our minds and train as hard as we could and with the intensity that we needed to take into games. Speaking personally, I’m so excited to finally have a game today. The positive side to the break is that some of the lads who were nursing injuries have had a bit of time to recover. Lood de Jager and Tom Curry needed a rest, and they’ve had one, and now we’re all ready to attack a run of games, starting with a tough one today. We’ve also got good news on the injury front with Manu Tuilagi, Faf de Klerk, Akker van der Merwe and Cobus Wiese all making good progress. They’re all important players but I’m excited about this

Sharks winger Marland Yarde had an unusual end to 2021 as injury and postponements meant he played just once in the last seven weeks of the year. But now the 29-yearold is fit again and chomping at the bit to kick off the new year with a bang and help push your Sharks up the Premiership table in 2022.
He said: “Christmas was great. My little girl is very young still but she loved it and it was magical for us to see her so excited. We had a lot of family around so it was brilliant. “Training over Christmas was affected by Covid and obviously we had two games called off, and to be honest that has been tough because I get my rhythm and confidence by playing matches. I just love playing week in week out. “But I’ve played rugby for many years and it’s not the first time I’ve had a spell without a game. It would be easy to make excuses but we’ve been working hard in training to remove the distractions and focus on our processes and what we do best.” Marland missed out on last season’s play-off semi-final defeat against Exeter Chiefs – and despite a mixed start to this season, he’s still confident it can be a campaign to remember. He said: “The Premiership for us is our bread and
WE SHOWED AGAINST OSPREYS IN THE CHAMPIONS CUP THAT WHEN WE DO GET IT RIGHT, WE CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE AND CAN BEAT ANYONE. butter. We’ve had a lot of changes in our team in the early part of the season but we’re still on track to do something special this season. Some of the results haven’t reflected the quality of our performances and there’s a lot of growth in us. We’re all pulling in the same direction, and we all believe in the club and what we’re all trying to do. “We showed against Ospreys in the Champions Cup that when we do get it right, we can be destructive and can beat anyone. We’re going to need to be even better this week to get the result we need and that’s the exciting thing. “We know Wasps are a really good 13
side and they’re going to cause us a lot of problems. They’re good on the counter attack and they’re really good over the ball too so we know we’re going to have to be strong at the breakdown.” Despite fixtures against Clermont and Newcastle being called off in December, Christmas and the new year is still a busy time for the Sharks squad, but Marland wouldn’t have it any other way. He said: “If you look at the next couple of months, we’ve got huge fixtures everywhere. After today’s game, we’ve got Bristol away, we’re away in Clermont and then Ospreys at home. It’s a busy period for us!
Christmas and the new year is actually a really exciting time for a rugby player. We don’t get to enjoy the festivities as much as many people do, but we’re doing something that we’re very lucky to be able to do. It’s a great time to play in front of festive crowds, and in front our families. “It’s different for us but I wouldn’t change it for the world.” And what about a new year’s resolution? He added: “To win games. Simple.”
“But it’s why we play the game.

Sale Sharks are painting Sale blue for the New Year – starting off with handing out free tickets to fans who take a picture of new club-branded taxis. The 20 cabs took to the roads of Sale in December decked out with Sharks branding and featuring ‘PROUD TO BE NORTHERN’ and ‘FABRIC OF THE NORTH’ slogans. The first 50 supporters to jump on board and take a picture – and then tag the club on social media using the hashtag #SharksFamilyXmas – will win a pair of free tickets to the Heineken Champions Cup fixture against Ospreys in 2022.
P A T E R E H
Sharks and England stars Ben and Tom Curry helped launch the competition this week as they sent the first cab on its way from the AJ Bell Stadium. But that’s not all. Sharks window stickers will appear in shops in the town this week and club-branded tote bags will be handed out. And today there will be more surprises at the AJ Bell for our New Year’s bash with Wasps, so keep your eyes peeled.

Welcome back to the AJ Bell for the first time in six weeks! A slightly unfriendly fixture list and the European Cup disruption has meant it’s been a long time away, but they do say absence makes the heart grow fonder and we’re very excited to be back. If you’re reading this on gameday, all being well all three of us should be in the Sharquee before the game so do come and say hello! As we write this ahead of time we’ve no idea what the world looks like in 2022 but we hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year and are looking forward to a big year on and off the pitch for the Sharks.
Off the field the big news since the last programme is of course the signing of man mountain, Lion and purveyor of England’s finest left footed spiral kicks, Jonny Hill. The second established England international to sign for the Sharks ahead of next season, joining George Ford, it’s a real statement of intent and direction from the club and we cannot wait to see him pull a Sharks shirt on next September. We’re also all hopeful that 2022 may be the year we finally get ownership of the stadium and all the benefits off the field that come with it – we’re keeping our fingers crossed and hopefully the festive game this time next year will be a top-class fan experience.
But turning to the most important matters on the field – the return of Wasps to the AJ Bell. The last time we played Wasps at home was a very disappointing 23-26 loss in December 2020 with no crowds allowed in, so some loud and proud festive fixture support from us today should hopefully tip that back in our favour. It’s a great chance to kick start the second half of the season in the right way and begin the ascent back up the table, with a fresh and rested squad ready to reclaim a place in the top half. Also on the field the Sale Sharks Academy have returned and have shown just how bright the future is with two big bonus point wins against Worcester and Leicester. A massive congratulations to all involved and you can expect to hear much more about them from James we’re sure. After two years of no bright academy talent to rave about for 30 minutes on the pod it’s been the perfect Christmas present for him. After a year that has seen no fans at grounds, some fantastic league performances, two away Champions Cup wins, some semifinal heartbreak and of course a
new DoR we can only hope 2022 is…. just as eventful! (Minus the lockdowns please). Enjoy the game, have a great year and we look forward to talking all about it in the Shark Tank in the weeks and months ahead.

Manchester and Sharks have a rich history together. Founded: 1860 Ground: Grove Park League: 1st XV Play in, North One West (Level 6)
Sharklinks: Currently Sam James & Luke James are at the forefront but previously Ciaran Parker, James Flynn & Ciaran Booth all came through the MRC ranks all the way into the Sharks senior squads.
Our philosophy at Mini & Juniors is “Dedicated to Development”. We focus very hard on player skill set and developing rugby players who understand the basics of the game. It’s one of the reasons we have so many players moving into the DPP setup, into the County teams and into the Sharks Academy. Due to the unique geography of where MRC is situated in Cheshire,
but with our constituent body being Lancs RFU we can nominate players into both Cheshire and Lancashire Counties, giving our players two bites at the cherry.
Unsung Hero: We have so many great volunteers but Natalie Hall (M&J Chair) and Tim Harper (Committee Member) do massive amounts for the club. Nat has all the age groups to keep in check as well as organising and the biggest Mini & Junior festival in the North to every year and manage. Tim Harper wears 3 hats on the Committee, manages and still plays for the Senior 3XV, as well as helping around the grounds every week. We do have so many brilliant volunteers who dedicate a great deal of time to the club and without them we just couldn’t deliver the rugby we do for all our members
Favourite Sharks Moment: A few great memories of the James brothers - Sam James scoring with a chip and chase at against Saints and then again against Toulon, but also Luke scoring a cracker versus Quins and the winning try at Bristol last season.
