A message from the City Mayor of Salford, Paul Dennett Building for future generations continues to be high on my agenda. Our children are the future of both Salford and the country, and your council takes its duty to them extremely seriously. However, finding a way in the world today is harder for young people than it has been for a long time. That’s why your council needs to step up to the challenge. Salford is one of very few local authorities who continue to provide a youth service and have a long history of supporting young people with services that work with them and their families. I am proud that our young people have been involved in the development of the new state-of-the-art facility in partnership with Fred Done which culminated in the launch of the name, SYZ, for the youth zone this month (more details on page 5). It is vital that we protect our most vulnerable children in the city and the recent announcement that we have maintained a ‘good’ Ofsted rating for Route29, which supports young people on the edge of care, is welcomed. Significantly, all the council’s children’s residential care facilities have now consecutively reached a milestone of being recognised as ‘good.’ There is so much more left to do, but we are committed to continue working with our young people to attain the best possible outcomes in education, employment and life. Jobs and skills Your council is also delivering on the promises made at the last election to provide a comprehensive skills and work agenda to create opportunities for our residents and communities. Through our investment in HOST at MediaCityUK, we now have a £2 million-plus programme in place to support the growth of digital, tech and cyber businesses helping 200 Salford residents into tech and digital jobs and introducing 1,200 Salford schoolchildren to tech careers. Salford has also been the only Greater Manchester authority to secure £245,000 from the DWP for a Supported Employment Service, providing individually tailored support to 140 Salford residents with learning disabilities and autism. On top of this we have £160,000 from the NHS to deliver community-based job fairs.
Salford’s growth story, and the council’s role within that, sets a high bar and shows the vital role local councils can play in co-ordinating and directing the growth of new sectors and industries. At the heart of this we have a strong, involved council which is providing leadership. That is why this council has pursued a policy of leading from the front and rebuilding lost capacity following decades of privatisation. Through Dérive we are investing in high-quality truly affordable homes for future generations in the city. The rents will be our own Salford rents. It is why we are developing masterplans for the area around the Crescent, Swinton and Eccles town centres, to breathe life back into our communities. But redeveloping our city is not just about new builds, it’s also about protecting what we have. I made a commitment to bring Buile Hill Mansion back into community use. It is fantastic news that the planning panel has approved our ambitious plans for this much loved historic asset in the heart of our city. Supporting you this winter As we move into winter many of you will be worried about making ends meet. I am committed to supporting residents who are struggling, the council is here to support you. Our Welfare Rights and Debit Advice service helped Salford households claim £6.5 million of unclaimed benefits in 2022/23 alone – and our holiday schemes for children have provided 1,500 meals and packed lunches per day over 60 sites across the city. We are delivering the £3.2 million package of support for residents impacted by the cost of living crisis. It is crucial that residents seek support early to prevent the situation reaching crisis.

Make your house a home with Salix Homes’ Furniture Recycling Scheme The cost of furnishing a home can be a big expense that some people may struggle to afford. If you’re a Salix Homes customer and struggling with the cost of buying essential furniture or appliances, or can’t afford replacements if they’re broken, then Salix Homes can help. The Furniture Recycling Scheme works by collecting unwanted furniture, household items and white goods, and then giving them away free of charge to customers who need them the most. Who can use the Furniture Recycling Scheme? This service is open to Salix Homes tenants who are on benefits such as Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or if you’re claiming your Pension. If you’re not on benefits, but you’re experiencing financial hardship, please get in touch and we might be able to help. How it works Salix Homes customers can apply to access the scheme, and if you meet the criteria, you’ll be given an appointment to come along to our furniture warehouse in Salford and choose what you need.
What’s available? There’s a well-stocked warehouse of good quality, clean, pre-loved furniture and homeware that has either been donated or has been left behind by a tenant who has moved out. It includes things like sofas, beds, tables, drawers and white goods like fridges, freezers and washing machines. SYZ
confirmed as the name of Salford’s new Youth Zone
Nearly 1,000 young people across Salford have determined the name of the city’s new Youth Zone, following a ballot in which schools and youth services had the opportunity to decide on the name. Over 10 different names, ideas and designs were narrowed down to just two with SYZ being the clear winner with over 66% of the vote. The branding process was led by the Youth Zone’s Young People’s Development Group (YPDG), which consists of young people from local partner community groups and youth services. The YPDG have jointly worked on the following statement: “We are so happy with the outcome of the ballot and that SYZ was chosen as the name for our new Youth Zone. SYZ will be a new beginning of creating an established brand which will resonate with young people in Salford. The city is ours and we are proud to belong in it.” Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennet, said: “We are really pleased to be working with partners and our young people here in the city on developing SYZ. It will be a fantastic addition to other youth facilities and services in Salford. It is vital young people have a wide range of opportunities to gain new experiences and skills, build their confidence and improve their health and wellbeing. I’m really looking forward to seeing SYZ complete and meeting the young people who will use this fantastic facility.” SYZ will provide young people access to incredible facilities in a vibrant, purpose-built space packed with over 20 engaging activities per session: including a state-of-theart gym, recording studio, rock climbing wall, sensory room and employability support. Young people will have opportunity to make friends, develop new skills and have fun, all for just 50p per visit and one £5 annual membership.
SYZ is unique in that it is being developed by EMPOWER – an umbrella charity which already oversees the operations of another local award-winning Youth Zone, HideOut Youth Zone, in East Manchester. EMPOWER will deliver the new Youth Zone in partnership with Salford City Council and the national youth charity, OnSide, who has supported the creation and development of 15 Youth Zones across the UK.

Winners will receive a SYZ hoodie and will be invited to a special event to unveil their work. University breathes new life into iconic Salford landmark
The fire engine bays of Salford’s well-loved Old Fire Station have been completely transformed into a brand-new microbrewery, bakery, café, and bar which opened for business this summer. The venue has been renovated by the University of Salford into the Crescent’s newest hotspot, offering top quality beers, Instagram-worthy bakes, freshly brewed coffee, and street food delights from local independent pop-ups. What’s on offer? The space features an indoor café area, outdoor seating on the terrace, a dedicated bar, and the incredible Lark Hill Brewery. The café serves brilliant brunches, freshly made sandwiches, grilled cheese, and salads, while the bar offers their very own Lark Hill beers specially brewed on site. No trip can be complete without a take-away treat from the bakery which offers irresistible flaky croissants, a delicious range of pastries and sensational artisan sourdough, all made lovingly on site. An iconic building reinvented The building was once Salford’s central fire station, which opened in 1903. The square itself, Albert Bentley, is named after Salford’s first ever fire chief, who revolutionised the way the service was delivered in the city. Beer and bread are very much part of the University’s heritage - back in 1893 initial funding of £4,956 was taken from Customs & Excise money for the precursor of the University, the Royal College of Advanced Technology. Referred to as “Whisky money” a member of parliament commented “we will distil wisdom out of whisky, genius out of gin and capacity for business out of beer".
Launch party Thursday 3 August marked the official launch party of the venue, with guests treated to live music, DJ sets and delicious samples. Professor Karl Dayson, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research and Enterprise at the University of Salford took to the stage to welcome invitees and thank the dedicated team who made it all happen. His address was followed by a speech by Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett who commended the University for bringing such a vibrant development to the Crescent. Haven’t paid a visit yet? The Old Fire Station opening times: Tuesdays to Fridays - 8am to 8pm. Brunch is served from opening until 2pm, followed by kitchen pop-ups. Saturdays - 9am to 8pm. Buile Hill Mansion plans approved The council gave planning proposals the green light in September. The restored historic mansion at Buile Hill Park will be home to the council's registry services as well as community space including a mixed use café bar and wedding venue and function room. Disabled access ramps will be installed along with a lift and an external enclosed staircase, making Buile Hill Mansion accessible for all residents and our communities in Salford. The Buile Hill depot outbuildings, with the exception of the derelict greenhouse, will be demolished and a new car park created for the mansion. It was agreed that the group campaigning for the refurbishment of the greenhouse would be given the opportunity to formally present its business case for its restoration. Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “I made a commitment to the city, our residents and communities at the last mayoral election to bring Buile Hill Mansion back into community use and it is fantastic news that the ambitious and exciting plans for this much loved historic asset in the heart of our city have been approved” “I’m looking forward to the doors being fully open once works are completed. This significant investment to restore the historic mansion building will also hopefully act as a catalyst for future investment into the surrounding park.”

Wood thicker than your wrist is too big and can’t be put in your pink lidded food and garden bin. You can take large trunks and wooden bases to your local recycling centre.

Bowling club ‘bowled over’ after being named Springboard Heroes winners A Salford bowling club has been given a welcome funding boost after being named winners of this year’s Springboard Heroes Awards. Chandos Bowling Club has been crowned Springboard Heroes 2023 winners in the annual awards organised by housing association Salix Homes. After a public vote, it was a close contest between the four finalists - Ordsall Community Arts group, Salford Forum for Refugees and People Seeking Asylum, Visit from the Stork and the eventual winner Chandos Bowling Club. The bowling club wins a £1,000 cash boost, which they’re using towards the upkeep of the clubhouse, with the runners-up each receiving £100. The bowling club, based in Weaste, has been at the heart of the community for more than 50 years. Its members describe it as an “oasis in the middle of Salford” and for many, it’s been a lifeline for helping to overcome isolation or mental health issues. Club Treasurer Irene Travis said: “I can’t thank everyone enough who gave their vote to us, it means such a lot. We’re not just a bowling club, we are a family, we are here to help everyone, and the money will help to keep us going.” The bowling club offers a safe and inclusive place to exercise, meet with friends and get some fresh air, providing an important boost to people’s health and wellbeing.

Friends of Parr Fold Park Nestled in the heart of Walkden lies a hidden gem: Parr Fold Park. Behind the scenes, a dedicated group of volunteers known as the Friends of Parr Fold Park dedicate their time to transform this Victorian-style park into a thriving hub for biodiversity and a welcoming space for the community. Established in 2015 by a small group of like minded people, this group has grown to include 28 passionate volunteers from diverse backgrounds, all united by their love for the park and a shared vision of its potential.
The Friends of Parr Fold Park wear many hats. They roll up their sleeves for park maintenance and vibrant flower planting, ensuring the park's beauty flourishes yearround. Their contributions extend beyond gardening gloves. They collaborate closely with the Pavilion Cafe and Salford Community Leisure to organise community events for Easter, Halloween, and Christmas, infusing the park with a sense of togetherness. Their dedication hasn't gone unnoticed. The group has accumulated many awards, including the RHS Britain In Bloom It's Your Neighbourhood award - rated Outstanding 2021, 2022 and 2023, and the prestigious Green Flag Award in 2022. Their most recent feather in the cap is the Spirit of Salford Award in 2023, for Best Environmental Improvement. When asked about their proudest moments, Deborah shared, "I love all the events we host and being able to build relationships with other local organisations within the community. It’s been so rewarding watching members of our group thrive while growing not just their gardening skills, but social skills, too."
Diane chimed in with, "It has got to be the Spirit of Salford Awards. It was hosted by the Mayor of Salford, and the whole night was just amazing. Very grateful to be a part of such an event, and to win the award was such an honour.” The Friends of Parr Fold Park harbour ambitious plans for the park's future. They intend to rejuvenate the park's old rock pools, transforming them into Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) that will enhance biodiversity. Looking further ahead, their vision includes the restoration of the park's bandstand, one of only two left in Salford, to bring back a touch of history and culture. This passionate group always has open arms for new volunteers. Everyone is welcome, and no contribution of time goes unnoticed. Salford Royal joins the fight to end all new HIV transmissions in Greater Manchester Patients over the age of 16 who attend the Emergency Department (ED) at Salford Royal and have their bloods taken will now also be tested for HIV. Part of a national NHS initiative, Salford Royal is joining fellow Greater Manchester hospitals Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital in the fight to end all new HIV transmissions by 2030. Manchester and Salford are among 16 areas in England where more than 5 in every 1,000 people have HIV.
Dr Sarah Rose, Consultant in Acute Medicine at Salford Royal, said, “Timely diagnosis for HIV means that you can stay healthy and live a long life. Treatment on the NHS is completely free and once you’re on the medication and take it regularly, not only do you protect yourself from getting ill, but it also means you won’t pass on the virus to anyone else.” HIV testing in the ED is done discreetly, and no questions will be asked about lifestyle or risk. Those not wishing to be tested, simply need to let a member of staff know. A specialist team will contact anyone with a positive test and offer support and treatment. Salford Royal is part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust.
