Mathematics newsletter February 2017 Mathematics graduate Sherry Zhang on how she came to study Mathematics
New Tutor Profile at Salford:
“My decision to study Maths in Higher Education was for one simple reason: I love Mathematics! That’s because it involves many essential skills, such as numerical, logical, analysis skills etc. I applied to Salford because the course includes various kinds of mathematical modules, like numerical analysis, statistical modelling, tensor algebra and fluid dynamics, from theories to practical problems in the real world.
Dr Elon Correa
My qualification at Salford enabled me to go on to a career in Actuarial Science. This deals with the formulas and models behind the insurance products and risk assessments. I apply lots of knowledge I learnt at Salford, especially from Year 3. I am well prepared for my further studies and future professional exams from Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). I am now employed by Aviva and work as an Actuarial Advisor.”
Lectures in Statistics, Mathematical Statistics, and Operational Re-search Research Interests: Applied Mathematics, Data Mining and Medical Statistics. Dad, husband and inquisitive DIY enthusiast. Yes, I may be a little biased, but Mathematics and Statistics are great, fun and offer students a range of rewarding career opportunities. After years working with applied computational statistics across many disciplines I am now lecturing in Salford. The modules I teach focus on equipping students with practical mathematical knowledge and statistical skills for the workplace. As a tutor and supervisor I have several overlapping roles, mentor, trainer, supporter, critic, fellow researcher, listener and counsellor. Through research and professional development I keep up to date with new technologies and applications required by industries to ensure our students are ahead of the rest. Mathematics @ Salford offers a very personalised, friendly, supportive and vibrant environment for students and I am happy to be part of it. David Hilditch on his student experience Salford was a fantastic environment to study in, with small classes and a lot of lecturers (and academic advisors) who were interested in me and wanted me to succeed.
