DAY 2: 5.12. 2010

The Day of Contrasts Second day at the WFC2010 brought forward the other side of the coin in the new style WFC. Strong European floorball nations beated their opponents in a very rude way. In the end of the day, Sweden made a questionnable new record in winning numbers by 39-1 victory over Australia. Czech Rep. crushed Japan 25-1 and Finland manhandled Canada 14-2. Finland, Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic and Norway secured their places in the quarterfinals. Group B had a day of rest from the games.

Russia has opened the tournament with two victories. Odd enough, they were the underdogs both times, and never really had complete control of the ball. Their impressive start points fingers to their goaltender. Combined, Canada and Russia have outshot the Russians by 51 shots, but the points got splattered on a stonewall called Sergey Pronyakov. Despite the result, Pronyakov was one of the best players in the Canada-match. He showed great reflexes in the first two periods, single-handedly stopping numerous scoring chances. The final score of 6–9 didn't give him much credit, but in reality his 15 saves were the key to victory. The magnitude of Pronyakov's 21 saves is even greater when looked at Alexander Gaihede's numbers in the other end. The Denmark goaltender had only nine stops all game. Pronyakov will get his skills completely tested in the group's closing match, when they step in the rink to face the reigning champions, Finland. The battle of brilliant goaltenders will no doubt be interesting

- I instantly wanted to volunteer as a ball boy when they started searching for staff for the WFC2010. I’ve worked as a ball boy for the Finnish team Tapanilan Erä as well. An experienced 13-year-old Jani Autio enjoys his job, as he gets to see the games from a very close point of view. -I’ve got two games per day. My job is to return the ball to the rink when it goes out. We need to be careful which corner will do the job, so that we don’t throw two balls at the same time. It happened once today and the referee needed to stop the game for a while.
