Welcome A very warm welcome to the YMCA National Assembly 2010, set in the beautiful grounds of Nottingham University. Our theme this year, chosen by young people from Chelmsford and Northamptonshire YMCAs, is Inspiration for Transformation, and we plan to deliver a programme that reflects the transformative work that occurs every day in YMCAs around the country. Our hope is that by the time you leave you will feel empowered and motivated to keep building on this fantastic work in 2010 and beyond. Recently I visited Palestine with a number of young people to see the work of East Jerusalem YMCA and the YWCA Daniel Flynn of Palestine. As we were walking around the old city of National Assembly Jerusalem, one young woman excitedly showed me an extract Committee Chair from Psalm 40:
I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
YMCA shop Visit the YMCA Shop exhibition to get your YMCA merchandise.
Exhibitions There will be a range of exhibitions showing work within the YMCA Movement and from key suppliers who can assist your YMCA in delivering its Mission.
“That’s the truth,” she said. “That’s what literally happened to me.” For that young woman, reaching that moment took many years. Mountains and valleys were crossed and lots of time, commitment and effort from YMCA staff took place. No doubt you have similar stories of transformation from your own YMCA, and I hope you will leave National Assembly having heard many more. At the YMCA, our aim is for all young people, YMCA staff and volunteers to belong, contribute and thrive. By valuing each other’s different and special contributions, we can extend the reach of our work and help more young people build a healthy and happy future. Together, we are driven by a desire to see young people gain the skills and confidence to transform not just their own lives but also the lives of their families and communities. I would like to thank the National Assembly Committee and the YMCA England staff members that make National Assembly happen. I would also like to extend a special thank you to every young person, YMCA staff member and volunteer for making the YMCA the incredible organisation that it is. 3

What’s On sunday
9.45–10.45 Speaker: Graeme Codrington The Theatre
Dr Graeme Codrington is an expert on the new world of work and multigenerational workplaces. As a writer, speaker and strategy consultant, he has helped thousands of leaders get more from their people and improve their organisations by understanding the forces shaping the new world of work. Graham was one of the founding Executive members of the International Association for the Study of Youth Ministry, and spends some of his time each year working with charities that focus on youth issues, helping them to develop strategies and adapt to a new generation of young people and young leaders. Graeme’s presentation on different generations is an inspiring – and often humorous – look at why younger and older people see the world in such different ways. You’ll understand why we’re so different, and how to get the best out of young and old members of your team. And most importantly, you’ll be inspired again by the vision of truly transformed communities that help each individual achieve their own potential.
