4 RAKUGO: A RETURN TO TRADITIONAL JAPANESE SENTOS UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO 4B TERM INDIVIDUAL Oyunuma, Japan The final term project outline was to design a bathhouse in Oyunuma, Hokkaido, Japan. I took it upon myself to make this a research project that pays homage to traditional Japanese construction and architecture, physically and programmatically. In lieu of a modern bathhouse, I have designed a series of bathhouses that experiment with the sensation of exposure within a space through the power of architecture, showcasing my desire for Japan to remember its Sento baths deeply rooted in its history. In tradtional Sentos, everyone was completely exposed to one another as they bathed, a tradition that is slowly but surely becoming lost with each decade as the Japanese view toward public exposure is becoming more and more Americanized. Using the theatre as a metaphor, I am highlighting just how easily one’s perception of exposure can be manipulated through design. TOOLS:

5 HYPERNYM: A STUDY OF THE MULTI-USE BUILDING UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO 3A TERM INDIVIDUAL Toronto, ON, Canada Inspired by a thesis project in the heart of the historic Distillery District of downtown Toronto, I desired for this multi-use building to be a true extension of the renovations of the Distillery District, a central location of the city that extends what the original designers, architects and urban planners had in mind when revitalizing the area. Being located directly across the street from the site, I envisioned this building to provide a central location that the local communities thirst to be realized for all of the diverse activity within the urban fabric. I wish for this building to reflect the surroundings of the historic Distillery District, an opportunity to experience a different side of a major growing city, to bring various local artisans together in the large studio spaces provided, to create a platform for the local urban community and for city-wide events to take place. 6 KAKOE KANOE: A STUDY OF THE DON VALLEY RIVER UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO 2B TERM PARTNER: V. BOJIC Toronto, ON, Canada This project is a case study of the Don Valley in Toronto, ON, Canada as well as the design of a series of various small scale interventions that tackle an approach to problems we find in the River through out study. Our focus was on the recreation of the Don Valley River, particularly on canoeing. Through the study, we found that canoes in this river are only legally allowed once a year for the ‘Paddle the Don’ event in which stored water would be released from the dam way up north of the river. Without this substantial amount of extra water, canoeing would be nearly impossible and highly dangerous due to various negative factors that effect the entire river, ranging from high levels of pollution and Ecoli to high-risk flood zones. To bring back a demand for safe canoeing in the Don, our intervention seeks to create canoeing stations along the river, envouraging thorough governmental action and public awareness to clean up the Don Valley. 7 THE MIRROR STATE: PUTTING TOGETHER A PLAY FROM SCRATCH UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO 2B TERM CLASS COLLABORATION Cambridge, ON, Canada Every year, the 2B class of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture has the unique opportunity to put on an original play for the cultural iconography class. Our class chose to write for, direct, choreograph, design lighting for, design and build the set for, design costumes for, to create from scratch a play about Antonin Artaud, the playwright who was part of the Surrealist Movement. The plays follows his descent into madness while struggling to create perfect play drawn from both Balinese as well as Tarahumaran cultures with his fellow artistic talents of the age. I auditioned for and played the part of artist Salvador Dali, who was a very influential part of the Surrealist movement in Paris and was also a play coordinator, in charge of the Publicity Team’s organization, management, as well as Fundraising. In the end, I managed to earn about $3500 in product as well as monetary donations for our class.” PROJECT-SPECIFIC TASKS: • Publicity Coordinator • Fundraising Coordinator • Actor of Salvador Dali

July 16th, 2018 Re: Yousong (Sally) Kim, Letter of Recommendation

To Whom it May Concern:

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for Yousong (Sally) Kim. I got to know and work with Sally during her undergraduate degree at the University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture and feel fortunate to have met such a talented and inspiring person. Although I know her through her capacity as a student and designer, her character, determination and honest enthusiasm makes her a perfect candidate for any program or work she chooses to pursue. Sally is an bright, energetic and strong student who is inspired, creative and perceptive. I had the pleasure of teaching Sally in the fall of 2017 during her 4th year undergraduate design studio while abroad in Rome, Italy as a part of the University of Waterloo’s Architecture program. Sally stood out among her peers immediately; with a great smile and warmth, she even made me, a new professor, feel welcome to the class. She is quick on her feet, she engages in conversation immediately, she is bursting with creativity, and dives in wholly and completely. I saw Sally approach her work in the design studio with a delicate mindfulness and sensitivity that makes her a talented designer, but with a forceful excitement and whole-heartedness that makes her an amazing collaborator in any context. She balances these manners of caring so clearly in her work; she is both a listener and leader. This is what Sally is known for; she greets everyone and everything she meets with open arms, open ears, and an open heart. I have yet to meet many students who are so hardworking, but who can also find such great joy in the project and problem at hand. Sally is a genuinely caring person, and the work I saw her produce within the very fragile, historic and important contexts of the architecturally charged Italian urban environment was tremendously powerful and freeing. She was able to both express a broader concern towards the greater social and physical impact of her work, while remembering that design has the ability to engage, provide and create new uses of space. Architecture is a tool that can redefine a user’s experience, and quite simply, Sally approached her design problems with a plausible joyfulness and playfulness that is unique to find in such a focused profession. She cared for the contexts and people of her work the way she would care about her own life and closest friends. Sally is clearly inspired by the world around her – she actively seeks out diverse opinions and work and approaches her own design and creative work through an honest and humbling empathetic means. While travelling together aboard in Italy, Sally was present at all times, and sought out her own rich experiences in these cities amidst our packed school schedule. She wasted no time, and wanted to understand her surroundings, the city, the people and histories. She drew, sketched, photographed, and learnt so much from engaging with her surroundings and from exploring and meeting people. This trait is so crucial in design, and yet is so often overlooked. Sally puts herself in the shoes of others and strives to understand the urban environment through

30

the many lenses present. This is what will make her a good designer and a contributing member to the world around her. Her work in Rome was beautiful, conscious, and provided an openness and voice to the people who need it most. I am proud of the mindset she has towards her work, and what she has achieved during the final years of her undergraduate degree. I give great praise to Sally’s abilities as a student, as an architect and designer, and as a well involved member of the architecture school’s community (in which she has been a force for five years). Sally is ready to take on whatever comes her way, and I believe she will do wonderfully with whatever she takes on. Anyone who works with her will benefit from her enthusiasm, honest passion, free-spirit and openness – her work will be a joy to be a part of. To end this letter, I wish to say most importantly that, aside from her abilities as a student, it is Sally’s strength of spirit that has impacted me the most. She is empowering, sincere and fearless. She leads confidently and brings everyone along with her… including myself. I am inspired by her – she is dependably selfless and loving, and her character is a measure of excellence. She is a person which all others should try to be like. During my time as an adjunct professor, Sally is one of the students I have enjoyed working with the most and hope I can support her in any way I can as she pursues her future. Sally will light the world on fire – I am eager to hear where life will take her. Thank you for your time and consideration. I urge you to contact me if there are any questions.

Sincerely,

Piper Bernbaum B.AS, M.Arch, OAA Intern Architect Assistant Professor, Carleton University Adjunct Professor, University of Waterloo piperbernbaum@gmail.com (226) 979 8199
