Ever since I was heavily inspired by a thesis project on the historic Distillery District of downtown Toronto, I desired for this multi-purpose residential building to become a true extension of the renovations of the Distillery District, a sort of central location that extends what the original designers, architects and urban planners had in mind when revitalizing the area. Being located directly across the street from the site, I would like the new building to provide a central location that the local communities thirst to be realized for the diversity of the events that happen within the urban fabric. The renovations of the Distillery were intended to create a historic center within the city that would be the ultimate tourist destination, an opportunity to experience a different side of a major growing city, to bring various local artisans together in the large studio spaces provided, to create an urban platform for community and city-wide events to take place, and gallery spaces for both local and big name artists to have their works displayed within the city’s hub of artistic energy. These goals are what I wish for my building to reflect, alongside the idea of bringing art much more thoroughly into the daily lives of the local residents, office employees and consumers that would use the building.

RIDGES ON THE PIER 2B Studio | Advisor: Rick Andrighetti | Individual

The Don Valley riverside area in Toronto, ON, Canada has seen a lot of environmental damage over the past few decades. These environmental impacts on this crucial part of what built the foundations for the Toronto of today not only affects the health and wellbeing of the wildlife and the people living and working in the area, but also the enormous potential for riverside recreational activity to experience the historic city from the perspective of nature, one of its most crucial elements alongside industrial development, such as canoeing. This architectural intervention attained its research base from a former studio research project on canoeing in the Don Valley, and has grown to be a physical form of a solution for the need for proper water recreation activity facilitation in the Don, simultaneously providing a campus of sorts over the river that ties the intervention back to the city through its programming. This project is meant to visually demonstrate the importance of the connection that is currently lost of the city and its roots, which lie within the Don river’s flowing stream.

KAKOE CANOE 2B Studio | Advisor: Lola Sheppard | Partner: V. Bojic

This studio project was both a case study of the Don Valley in Toronto, ON, Canada as well as an insightful series of relatively small scale interventions that begin to tackle an approach to a solution to any current problems we analyze of the Don river throughout the study. We chose to focus on the recreational aspect of the Don river, analyzing the nature of canoeing in the river in particular. Through the study, we came upon the realization that canoeing in this river was only legally available once a year for the ‘Paddle the Don’ event in which water would be released from the dam way up north of the river in order to accommodate. It turns out that without this extra water, canoeing would be nearly impossible and highly dangerous due to various negative factors throughout the entire river, ranging from high levels of pollution and Ecoli to high-risk flood zones. As a possible approach of attacking this problem and bring back safe canoeing to the Don as a regular recreational activity, our intervention seeks to create consecutive canoeing ‘stations’ along the river as a business plan approach that will create a higher demand for canoeing in the river, which would hopefully encourage more governmental action to rid the Don of its problems that prevent safe canoeing.

CASE STUDY: JARDIN DE BAMBOUS, PARIS 2B Studio | Advisor: Rick Andrighetti | Partner: A. Fischer

WATER FLOW

This particular studio term focused quite heavily on the landscaping element in architectural design, specifically on how the physical form of any intervention on a piece of land in whatever site context portrays the story that the architect had in mind as a solution for the ‘problem’ at hand. This project allowed for an initiation in the engagement of our thinking as designers into this branch of the study of architecture through a case study of a particularly well-known building or pavilion of sorts with a unique landscape intervention element, and my partner and I chose to focus our efforts on Alexander Chemetoff’s Jardin de Bambous, located within the Parc de la Villette designed by Bernard Tschumi in Paris. To explore both Tschumi and Chemetoff’s unique creations of new spaces and experiences through space within the existing urban fabric of Paris, we created a series of sectional and isometric experiential drawings and diagrams, as well as visual spatial analysis drawings.

CASE STUDY: JOHN HANCOCK TOWER, CHICAGO 3A Studio | Advisor: Delnaz Yekangrian | Group: H Tse, A Kenny, C Tan, T Tan

This studio term focused heavily on approaching the design process of high density multi-use buildings, beginning with a case study on an existing successfully designed building of that type. Our group chose to study the John Hancock Tower in Chicago, creating our own diagrams to explain its unique diagrid structure, its approach on circulation in relation to dividing/uniting public and private spaces in relation to its site, its approach on density as well as a recreation of its original floor plans.

THE MIRROR STATE 2015

Every summer term, the 2B class of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture has the amazing opportunity to put on an original play for the cultural iconography class. This year, our class chose to write, direct, choreograph, and create everything from scratch for a play about Antonin Artaud, the playwright from the Surrealist Movement and his descent into madness as he attempts to create the perfect play drawn from both Balinese and Tarahumaran cultural inspirations with his fellow artistic talents of the age. I auditioned for and played the part of Salvador Dali, a fellow Surrealist artist, and was also a play coordinator, in charge of the Publicity Team’s organization and management, as well as Fundraising, where I was solely responsible for finding sponsors around the local area in an attempt to earn us some extra funds for the enormous expenses required for a demanding artistic endeavour. In the end, I managed to earn about $3500 in product and monetary donations for our class.
