THE RAW & THE COOKED Spode Factory, Stoke-on-Trent

+BRIEF

After visiting the almost entirely abandoned Spode site and gaining access to many forgotten about rooms, we discovered a mass grave for ceramics, the casts of thousands of products and patterns, and a disused site at the heart of the town which needs an injection of life to revitalise the centre and attract tourism.

+INFORMATION

Conservation of the site and historic archives meant mater-planning the entire site. My focus was on creating a public realm between the two main entrances, which in turn concentrated the main scheme between existing buildings. Introducing contemporary connecting spaces and providing a central courtyard to interlock the project also gave views to SECTION C-C the controlled private areas above.

one part of the site for a creative workshop space. This space was to accommodate a craftspersons whilst they demonstrated and invited visitors to test their skills during a Spode festival. The craftspersons is a brick maker/layer, so the winding and detailed brick facade of the intervention demonstrates the variety of skills they possess as well as providing a dwelling and relaxation space for visitors. This was then modelled with handmade 1:10 bricks.

GRIFFIN LODGE

Conservation/Health Care

Griffin Lodge Facade retention on Garde II listed lodge set in its own grounds. The lodge has suffered multiple arson attacks in recent years and requires attention to bring it back to its former glory. Leading the design iterations on a scheme to combine three GP’s surgeries into a new ‘super-surgery’, designing to rigorous health building standards.

SPAR AT THE FORMER WINDMILL HOTEL Commercial

Spar Concept Designs Concept designs for a new Spar and petrol filling station at a currently derelict public house. The unusual triangular site has limited access and sits in a residential area, therefore the response needs a clear design intention and a solution that dominates the existing presence of the building whilst modernising the area and appeals to neighbours and commuters.

late in the century the manufacturing industry, like in much of the UK, saw a heavy decline, eventually being replaced by the services industry. The 20th century also saw the cities boundaries expand plenty of times and now houses just over a million people in its 260km2 boundary3. CITY, SUBURBIA

Attractions to the city include the bullring shopping centre, originally built in 1964, it has seen renovation and additions to make it the shopping hub of the city now. The new library

SERVICES The service sector employment has grown hugely in recent years in Birmingham. The decline of industry has been a many factor in this. Financial services lead the way with the most employment as well as being the largest contributor to economic output, 33%. There is a relatively large percentage of people unemployed in Birmingham but this connects with the large number of students that live in the city. While 77.3% of the UK is economically active, only 69.7% of Birmingham’s population is economically active. For those in Birmingham who are not economically active, 30% are students

TECHNOLOGY The high speed rail plans will soon mean that the commute from Birmingham to London is completed within an hour. Although work will only start on the HS2 in 2017 it is set to be complete in 20266, with further plans to connect Leeds and Manchester following the first phase completion. This will more than likely see people commuting daily from the West Midlands to the capital for work. This will increase the population of the city and change the demographic once more. As well as this there are plans for a metro extension, the New Street Gateway and airport runway extension. These plans have caused a surge in property investment and recast a manufacturing powerhouse into a hub for professional services and retail with jobs growth faster in the remodelled city centre 7. This is clear to see when looking at the station overhaul of what is now being branded as ‘Grand Central’.

Bike

and New Street Station has also very recently been completed and both bring a little sparkle to the city centre. The city homes many museums, including the Museum of the Jewelery Quarter, science museums and a sea life centre, another notable attraction to the city suburbs is Cadbury world in Bournville.
