LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

sperm donor I am writing in response to the anonymous letter to the editor published in your Spring edition, regarding the subject of Donor Conception. I am the mother of a donorconceived child, not because I ‘undervalue’ the role of the father in family or in society; circumstances simply did not conspire to provide me with a lifelong partner. I do not feel that this makes me less of a mother than the next (married) woman, or any less deserving of the great blessing and gift that children are in life. I am personally offended that ‘Anonymous’ should think my beloved family any less a ‘family’ than any other, and as such unfit to be included in a family magazine. Might I gently point out to this person that families come in all shapes and sizes, and that, unfortunately, being raised in a twoparent family does not automatically guarantee a healthy or happy home environment for a child. People who know us would agree that my child has a wonderful life. I am able to afford to care for her at home on a full-time basis, and our days are peaceful, joy-filled, and very ‘normal’. When the time comes, she will receive a private school (and yes, Christian) education. She already has a savings account, and life insurance

should anything happen to me. Most importantly, my daughter has a mother who loves her more than Life Itself, and who treats her with kindness, compassion, dignity and respect at all times. Ours is a safe, stable home, we eat healthy, organic foods, and my little girl has lovely clothes and toys, some of which I make for her myself. She is surrounded by a whole extended family – uncles, aunties, cousins, grandparents – and dear friends who cherish and adore her, and she also has a Godfather (and Godmother) close by with whom she enjoys a very close and special relationship. Choosing to have a child via donor conception is not a decision I made lightly. I thought about it for a long time, organised my life and finances, consulted with family and friends, and researched the subject extensively. I also underwent a lengthy process involving mandatory counseling and evaluation, medical screening, and then almost another year on the waiting list for a donor. In order to be deemed suitable for donor insemination, I had to demonstrate that I would make a capable (single) parent – I sometimes wish that this were the case for more parents! Whilst we have not yet met him, my daughter and I are incredibly grateful for her donor-father. On Fathers’ Day,

we have begun a tradition of floating a message (of thanks and blessing) out to sea, and then returning home to enjoy a celebratory meal in honour of the man who gave her the gift of Life, and me the wonderful gift of Family. When she is older, if my daughter chooses to meet her donor and any half-siblings she might have, I will accompany and support her every step of the way on that exciting journey. For now, she is an incredibly happy, well-loved, and well-adjusted little girl. I love being her mother, and am hoping to give her a little brother or sister, who will share the same donor, in the near future. I have cared for foster children in my home in the past. I have also taught high school in a developing country, and cared for children with disabilities in an orphanage overseas. I agree with ‘Anonymous’ that there are many ‘children already born in this world that need love and care’. Unfortunately, the incredibly high cost and lengthy process of adoption rules that out as an option for many people who would otherwise love to adopt. Sadly, I feel that the greatest disadvantage my little girl faces in being donor-conceived is not the lack of a father in our home, but rather, the potentially damaging comments so carelessly thrown around by judgemental, narrow-minded people who would have her believe that she shouldn’t exist. Name and address supplied, Perth

oh boy, it’s a girl! Hello Offspring I just read the article on “Oh boy, it’s a girl” and couldn’t believe the similarities between Joanne and myself. It was as though I had written the article myself! After my first two boys and many tears, I felt the exact same way - I loved my sons to bits, but, something was missing - a daughter. I did the same research and came up with the same method, but I had another boy. My overwhelming desire and research led me to Thailand. After one successful IVF attempt at conceiving - it worked I finally had my little girl. A very expensive little girl - my husband often reminds me, but worth every cent. I love all my children unconditionally and our family is now complete. I am very fortunate and lucky to have four beautiful children. I know that others will read our stories and think how selfish, desperate, and ungrateful we are, but all we did was research and swing the balance in our favour. Everyone has an opinion on gender selection, but that’s all it should be an “opinion”. There is no right or wrong, it’s what works for you and your family. Anonymous, Perth

balancing act 12 Offspring | summer 2010

Kylie Radford and Richard Poulson have established one of Australia’s most profitable fashion empires, yet despite the madness and mayhem of a burgeoning business, they still manage to put family first. BY JESSICA ZOITI

MORRISON is a true Western Australian success story – the Fremantle-based fashion label has a loyal following of style-savvy women not just here in Australia, but around the world. But there’s more to the brand than simply “must-have” clothing. On meeting its co-founders, Kylie Radford and Richard Poulson, one realises Morrison is a humble operation run by people whose family-oriented feet are planted firmly on the ground. The creative couple gave birth to their business in 2002 when the first Morrison boutique opened at number 55 Market Street, Fremantle. At that point they were a dynamic team of just three – Kylie, Richard and their devoted and loving black kelpie-cross, Morrison, after whom the business is named and who sadly passed away a couple of years ago. However the memory of their four-legged family member well and truly lives on. There are now eight dedicated

Morrison boutiques scattered around the country, over 150 national stockists and 92 staff. In April 2011, two stores are set to open in Sydney, by May there will be two more in Melbourne and Brisbane, and Richard is tight-lipped about a couple of other deals on which he’s currently working. And then there are the accolades that keep rolling in. Kylie was named among the top five earning Australian women on the latest BRW Under-40 Rich List, in 2008 the couple were named Young Entrepreneurs of the Year and Australian Fashion Retailers of the Year, and in 2007 they were named WA Fashion Designers of the Year.

fabrics possible. Clever draping, a natural and muted

Morrison clothing continues to adhere to a design philosophy of comfort fit and made from the best fabrics possible Amidst all of this, the couple managed to produce two gorgeous, cherub-like sons, Baxter, five, and Louis, three. Not even Kylie predicted this phenomenal success. “We didn’t set out to create the label, as such,” she begins. “The original concept was to open a retail store selling ladies underwear, accessories, gift wear and all those yummy things. I had done some design beforehand and when we opened the Fremantle store I designed a pair of pants – that’s really where it all started.” Customers quickly coined this garment the “good butt pant” for its ability to make any behind look beautiful. Made from a cotton stretch fabric, they were loose in the leg and therefore cool in summer, and could be worn both with thongs or something a little dressier. At one point, women literally lined up outside the store for them. Today, Morrison clothing continues to adhere to a design philosophy of comfort fit and made from the best

colour palette, luxurious silks, easy-to-wear jersey and relaxed pants are all typical of each and every range. While the story so far sounds like a fairytale, Kylie candidly confides that balancing her different roles has been a challenge.

I even emailed my lovely boss to explain the reasons why. It was so hard to press SEND. But I did. STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL HEIRLOOM CLOTHING FOR YOUR PRECIOUS LITTLE ONE It’s nearly impossible to describe this amazing new range of babies “heirloom clothing” without lapsing into a string of superlatives. Dear Charlotte Love Banjo is the work of two Perth mothers,

Sally and Emerald. The name arose from their children (the eponymous Charlotte and Banjo) who are “so obsessed with each other they are often seen holding hands in a double pram”. Indeed, their mothers would joke that they would one day send little love letters to each other ... Dear Charlotte Love Banjo. The clothing is stunning and harks back to simpler, sweeter times. You can find Dear Charlotte Love Banjo online at www.dearcharlottelovebanjo. com.au and at Little Posh in Mount Hawthorn.

different perspective you get on life, and perhaps it’s this perspective that enables you to put things that seemed pretty major to the side and focus on issues more relevant to the now. As an example, previously if I couldn’t sleep at night it was because I was going over a work, relationship or financial problem over and over in my head. Now it’s because I have the theme song from “Bert and Ernie’s Great Adventures” on a continuous loop. The only way I can get to sleep is to think about

There are other aspects of being a father that perhaps have more substance to them. There’s not much that can beat seeing your kids ecstatically running or crawling to greet you when you get home from work like you’re the most important guy on earth. And even if you were as hard a man as Geelong’s Paul Chapman, your heart would still melt when you sneaked in at night to see their little faces sleeping peacefully. Finding the perfect Christmas gift can be a challenge, so we help you with some ideas the kids will love – for all budgets.

$50 and Under Look for toys that stimulate the senses, with bright colours or interesting textures for baby to touch. “One of our best sellers is the awardwinning Skwish – an amazing toy to look at and feel, it can be sucked, chewed, thrown, bounced and pulled,” Ms Da Busco said.

Ms Gooderson recommended the Tolo range of toys for babies and young children: “These are fantastic - it’s a beautiful brand and we sell out of them constantly.”

Sweet Creations (www. sweetcreations.com.au) has gift ideas for all budgets for babies, a nice gift idea being the rocking horse, according to Sweet Creations owner Debra McPherson.

Clothes are also always appreciated by parents and choosing a piece in organic cotton or bamboo will be beautiful on newborn skin. Try Avidiva (www.avidiva.com. au) for a range of eco-friendly and organic products.

Over $50 If you have a higher budget, choosing a toy that has multiple uses is a smart choice. Christina Lincoln, owner of Playquip (www.playquipwa. com.au), suggested K Kid’s CrocoBloco, which has detachable blocks that each have soft play activities and can also be a hugging pillow or back cushion.

To mark a baby’s first Christmas, you might like to consider a keepsake that will be treasured for years to come. Something personalised will add an extra special element, such as fingerprint jewellery from Smallprint, (www.smallp.com.au) or fingerprint and footprint keepsakes from Inky Feet (www.inkyfeet.com.au)

Ms Dal Busco said gardening tools and wheelbarrows make excellent gifts. “Toddlers love role playing, and what better way to get them outside in the sunshine than working in the garden, she said. Ms Dal Busco added baby dolls and strollers/prams are also always good sellers at Christmas for both boys and girls.

Puzzles, games and books are great stocking fillers for children. Bubbalove has a great range of toys and puzzles for various ages (www.bubbalove.com.au).

PREGNANCY & BIRTH

From the Midwife with Devon Plumley RN, Dip Ed, MPH

Baby is born, now what happens? There is much focus on the stages and expectations of pregnancy, labour and birth, resulting in many new and experienced parents forgetting about the ever-important fourth stage of labour, or early postnatal period. Therefore, it is no surprise that after the baby and placenta are birthed the first question I am usually asked by parents is, “So what happens now?”

The early postnatal period is so valuable. It’s when

midwives and doctors.

Why is skin-to-skin beneficial? Skin-to-skin allows baby to hear your heart beat, and hence keeps baby calm and feeling secure. It keeps baby warm, avoids a drop in baby’s blood sugar levels, and of course aids in the first precious moments of motherchild bonding. Medical research also shows that skinto-skin contact increases the likelihood of successful breastfeeding, for longer.

So, how is skin-to-skin done? Simply place your naked baby with his chest against your chest - the more skin contact the better. Your midwife can help you to position baby. Watch then as baby starts to naturally head towards your breast.

give baby a few days worth of colostrum (the protective,

immune-boosting milky substance rich in minerals, proteins and healthy fats).

There are very few instances where skin-to-skin is not possible. Occasionally, babies need assistance to breathe. If this is deemed necessary, the cord is usually cut and baby placed on a resuscitation cot where their mouths may be suctioned of any thick mucous, or they may be given oxygen. Do not be alarmed as resuscitation of a newborn is only required in 10% of babies. Most babies become pink and vigorous when simply placed skin-to-skin and massaged and dried with a warm towel. Skin-to-skin contact should also be encouraged in caesarean-section births. Theatre staff can help tuck your newborn under the blanket where you and baby can begin to experience its benefits.

I’m bottle-feeding, should I still do skin-toskin? Women who choose to artificially feed should also go skin-to-skin with baby to ensure baby receives all other

PREGNANCY & BIRTH

Am I the only person who should do skinto-skin contact? Anyone can do skin-to-skin contact. When you are ready to finish skin-to-skin with baby (for a shower, change of position, move to a new room) baby can begin his/her first skin-to-skin experience with dad/partner/grandma. Baby is not prejudiced! This is a moment you will want to photograph. Gorgeous!

THE FIRST BREASTFEED Your midwife will be available to help you and baby with this first feed should you need it. Most importantly, however, is the skin-to-skin contact whereby baby is given the opportunity to seek out the breast, and lick, smell and familiarise him/herself. Most babies can attach themselves in this early period if given the time. Also remember that babies who have a good feed soon after birth will then have a lovely sleep, allowing mum to recover some much needed rest!

OBSERVING THE NEW MUM Following the birth of your baby, there are a number of mum checks that your midwife will attend to. • Blood pressure, heart rate and temperature. If you are alert and cuddling your baby, then we instantly know these vital signs should be within the expected limits. Nevertheless, hospital midwives will formally check these post birth. • Fundus (the top of the uterus) - following birth, your uterus will contract to the size of a large grapefruit. Rubbing the fundus encourages the uterus to remain contracted and helps to expel blood. You will also notice your uterus contracting when you breastfeed due to the release of the hormone, oxytocin. • Lochia (the name for blood loss from the vagina post birth) - it is normal to bleed up to half a litre following a vaginal birth. This amount can reach one litre following

All three women recommend newcomers to cloth start slowly. Remember – every cloth nappy you use is one less disposable going into landfill and more money in your hip pocket. Start with one or two and work your way up.

ECO ADVANTAGES: The environment is the Number One motivator for parents who choose cloth, and when you look closely at the stats, they’re hard to ignore. “One third of all Australian landfill is now disposable nappies,”

Niki. “When

that

disposables have only been the norm since 1994 (when they overtook cloth nappies with 50 percent market share), that’s both incredible and frightening. “Also, in Australia and New Zealand 30 million trees are felled annually to make the wood pulp that goes into disposables. Reusable nappies, such as Baby Beehinds, Itty Bitty, Bumgenius and Grovia, are made from sustainable fibres, such as bamboo,” she says. Polly adds that disposable nappies take centuries to break down, literally. “Every disposable nappy ever used still exists today. If King Henry VIII wore disposable

EARLY CHILDHOOD

BY HEATHER ZUBEK

preserving moments worth remembering Precious memories can be lost in the hurly-burly of daily life. Take the time to hold on to those joyful moments too precious to forget. Memories make the best gifts. Think ahead to the birth of your first grandchild. Imagine handing over a beautiful quilt crafted entirely from your own child’s baby clothes. Picture the look on your grown son’s face when you read from his baby journal on his 21st birthday party. Start making the most of these memories today.

Oh Baby! From the moment you find out you’re pregnant write a letter to your unborn baby. Tell him how you feel about his impending arrival, the joy and fears you feel about motherhood and how you suffered morning sickness all day long. Tell her you can’t wait to hold her in your arms and spend your lives falling in love with each other. Write the letter on the best quality paper you can find, seal it and give it to your baby when they too become a parent.

EARLY CHILDHOOD

BY KELLY RAE

Why do babies love the water so much? Maybe it’s because they spend around nine months growing and developing in their warm watery environment that they have a natural affinity with the water, evident after birth with blissful re-connections in the bath. As baby grows we see a conscious association with water developing, expressed by smiles, splashing and gurgles of joy.

EARLY CHILDHOOD Photos courtesy of Donna Rose Photography

The Bath A fantastic way to begin water familiarisation is to bath with your baby, and yes that means you get into the family bath together. The idea here is to do it with your baby not to them! Baby can relax into the contours of your body and enjoy nurturing skin-to-skin contact and warmth, encouraging allimportant bonding. Feeding baby (breast or bottle) in the bath reinforces a safe nurturing association with water and in the event of a negative trigger in the bath, feeding/nurturing will help to clear emotions brought to the surface in the water. • Bath together regularly, especially when there are no distractions or time limits. • Turn the phone off, play relaxing music and set the mood for bath time. • Have the water tepid to warm (not hot), comfortably deep and if possible warm air temperature. • Prepare towels and in winter wrap around a hot water bottle for a toasty warm snug after the bath. • Spend a few minutes gently massaging baby before

you get in. Touch not only feels good, it stimulates the circulatory and lymphatic system. • Securely holding your baby and with one hand free to support yourself, get into the bath with extreme care, or lay baby on towels alongside the bath, get in then reach over to bring baby in. • Once comfortable, relax and explore what your baby does and doesn’t like and you may find they are so relaxed they may even fall asleep. The family bath provides an intimate environment to explore the water together. Experiencing different holds and movements, tuning into baby’s responses all help to deepen bonding and develop understanding of needs in the water. Establishing a regular and comfortable ‘water connection’ will allow your natural parenting wisdom to emerge and prepare you for the next step, the swimming pool. When relaxed and present, there is less likely to result in transferred anxiety when swimming lessons begin.

EARLY CHILDHOOD

What to look for in a swim program We all want a great experience for our babies so when it comes to water awareness and swimming lessons, informed choice is important. This can be the difference between developing a love of water for life or a negative experience. These suggestions may help you make that informed choice. • Obtain a list of swim schools (e.g. based on location, reputation, affordability) and don’t restrict yourself to your immediate area as you may have to travel a bit for the “right oneâ€?. Ask around as word of mouth can also be a great guide.

Get ready to ask questions‌ • Does the swim school offer classes that are age and stage-appropriate for your child as; • similar age groups reflect similar developmental needs • new beginners and experienced children have different learning requirements • What is the maximum class size? • Is there a program philosophy and if so does it resonate with you? • Is there consistency with teachers each week or do they change often? • Are lesson plans consistent and progressive or do they differ with each teacher? • When is submersion introduced and how / who puts the babies underwater?

• Are floatation devices used and if so, how often and for what purpose? • What age do independent classes begin (without parents) and what happens if a child is not emotionally and physically ready for this transition? • If certificates are issued, is the focus on achievement (pass/fail) or based on individual ability and levels of happiness in the water?

Go and watch:

A lot can be learnt from watching. Find classes for your child’s age/ability and see if you can go along. This will help you gauge how different some programs can be. • Are the lessons stimulating and fun and is there encouragement and praise? (Play is learning and learning is play) • How competently are parents taught to become their baby’s teacher? Look for clear instructions, demonstration and refining of skills. • Are parents encouraged to tune in, read body language and readiness to participate? • In general, how do the children respond to submersion? • Do the skills you see seem appropriate for your child’s ability? • Are adaptations given if children are not capable or happy to participate? • What is the teaching approach if parents or children are anxious or upset in class? • Your parenting intuition is important, how do you feel watching?

The pool • Ideal water temperature for babies is around 33 degrees. • Water depth: you will need to feel secure when holding baby. • Are there distractions in the pool area during classes? (e.g. aerobics, other lessons, poolside cafe) Let your answers be your guide to finding the right swim school, and remember the well-being of your baby is far more important than any activity you become involved with. Starting school usually conjures up emotions, for children and their parents. Being ready to start school is not just reliant on the child, the skills they have and the school they will attend. Parents need to be prepared too. Usually skills the child requires are focal points. Are they toilet trained? Do they know their full name? Can they sit and listen to stories? Can they follow instructions? These questions have enough challenges for some parents, resulting in them feeling truly anxious about their child embarking on school. Parents take the reins and go about making sure their child can open their lunch box, or they buy velcro shoes to make sure their child is able to manage independently. Parents often forget about how much their own world changes alongside their child’s milestone. The social network of parents with young children may include play groups, day care, swimming lessons or even morning or

is an investment for the child and family. Anxiety of the unknown causes stress. Maintaining adult networks of career and social friendships helps develop confidence when facing changes. New friendships occur, and family networks expand. A new balance is established in the family when a child starts school. Parental involvement at school varies with the constraints families face. At times both parents may work and fewer opportunities for this may occur. Families

with both parents working can still be attentive to their child’s schooling and support their school community. Starting school does not just happen to children, the whole family starts school. Is your family ready to start school?

PRIMARY YEARS

afternoon plays in the parks with friends. Thinking about how these networks will change is important. They have sustained and supported the family through the early phases and challenges of life. Arranging for dropping off and picking up children may mean a change of child care for the child and adjusting to new staff for the adult. At times, the options available may limit the parent’s capacity, and changes to work schedules may occur. Adults often talk of being time poor and the ease of attending weekly sessions that benefits the child as well as the parent is a bonus. When the child moves on to school, maintaining friendships from these play groups or weekly sessions becomes something that needs to be scheduled rather than a standing booked time. Decisions are faced when a child begins school. Whether to maintain friendships for the child and adults, or maintaining the network of children within early social groups occur. Will parent and/or children meet informally, or join a sport or community group together? Taking time to decide how your life may be structured with a child at school

MUNCHING AND MOVING IN THE HOLIDAYS With the Christmas holidays approaching, Cancer Council Western Australia can help you plan a healthy and active summer for your children with some simple ideas.

Avoiding the sun Unfortunately, Australia carries the title of ‘the skin cancer capital of the world’, and WA is second only to Queensland with the highest rates of skin cancer in the country. We know that childhood sun exposure is one of the most significant risk factors for skin cancer later in life. The skin of young children is thinner and more sensitive than that of an adult, and can burn easily. That’s why it’s important that good sun protection behaviour is established in childhood, to protect young skin and to equip children with the sun protection principles that will help them reduce their risk of skin cancer during their lifetime. Childhood is a critical time to be SunSmart, as sun exposure in the first 10 years of life can determine the potential for skin cancer later in life. It’s also important to be aware that exposure to UV radiation accumulates over your lifetime.

Along with the heat, summer also signals the start of the stone fruit and delicious melon season providing an abundance of new fruit to offer to your children, and vegetables to include in quick salads. With longer days, there’s more opportunity for kids to be outdoors, providing an added incentive to get them up, switch off the screens (where they are frequently bombarded with junk food advertising) and get active and play. The lack of a routine during the holidays often provides some challenges to a normal routine of healthy eating, especially if you are relying on buying healthy snacks when you’re out. Unfortunately junk food options are frequently easier to find at children’s activity and entertainment centres. Healthier options prepared at home before you head out may require some time and planning on your part but they will save you money and your child’s health will be the winner. It’s important to keep up fruit and vegetable consumption with your children over summer because we know that most children eat less than the recommended daily amount of fruit and veg for good health. Without a doubt, good eating habits formed in childhood will decrease the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood.

Try these healthy eating tips for summer! •

When travelling, pack fruits that won’t bruise easily such as grapes or orange slices. Try a fruit smoothie for breakfast by blending fruit, yoghurt, milk and ice. Give fruits a new look by dicing them up and putting them onto skewers to entice children’s interest. Serve lots of colourful salads when you have a BBQ. Keep a bowl of fresh fruit and vegetables ready to eat on the kitchen bench or refrigerator shelf that kids can reach. Put some melon chunks into ice cube trays, add wooden sticks and freeze for a great frozen snack on a hot day. Have a lunchbox filled with bottles of water, wholegrain crackers, nuts and dried fruit for unplanned outings. Make sure children aren’t confusing thirst for hunger. Keep water as the main drink for kids all summer long. Add a slice of apple, strawberry or orange to flavour water.

DON’T FORGET YOUR BATHERS AND TOWEL!

Enjoying outdoor family time is a great way to have fun. Try a family picnic and bring some toys for everyone to play e.g. ball, hula hoop, tennis ball and racket Set holiday rules for watching TV, playing electronic games and spending time on the computer which should not exceed two hours a day. Get kids to make a list of their favourite activities that can be checked off each time the activity is done! If it’s too hot to go outside, play pass the parcel indoors. Write active tasks on pieces of paper and place each task between layers of newspaper. Play music and when it stops, the child with the parcel unwraps it and performs the task. Go back to basics and have kids play hide and seek indoors or outdoors.

Top 10 SunSmart Tips for kids 1. Slip on protective clothing

7. Check the UV Index

Clothes are the best defence against UV damage. Children should wear clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Choose clothes that have a high ultraviolet protection factor (UPF 40 -50+) and styles that are loose for airflow.

You can still get sunburnt on cool and cloudy days so remember sun protection is needed when the UV Index is three or above. Look for the SunSmart UV Alert on weather page of the daily newspaper or at: www.bom.gov.au/weather/uv.

2. Slop on sunscreen

8. Plan activities for the morning or evening

Look for SPF 30+, broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreens with a valid expiry date. Apply sunscreen to clean, dry skin 20 minutes before going outside and layer it on the skin rather than rubbing it in. Remember to reapply every two hours.

The UV Index peaks during the middle of the day. Try to plan outdoor activities during early morning or late afternoon, to avoid this peak UV time.

3. Slap on a SunSmart hat

9. Encourage your child’s school or child care centre to become SunSmart

Choose a hat that provides good shade to the face, back of the neck and ears when outdoors, such as a wide brim, bucket or legionnaire hat. Caps and sun visors leave the ears and back of the neck exposed.

SunSmart Schools and SunSmart Centres’ programs assist schools and childcare centres to develop and implement a SunSmart Policy, ensuring your children are kept safe while not in your care.

4. Seek shade

10. Look after yourself, check your skin regularly

Encourage children of all ages to play in shaded areas. UV radiation can be reflected from some surfaces so you still need hats, clothing and sunscreen when in the shade.

5. Slide on sunglasses Sunglasses offer good eye protection for children and babies, but check they meet the Australian Standard.

6. Be a good role model Make sun protection part of your family’s routine and help your children to develop good sun-protection habits early in life.

HEALTH

Finding time to exercise can be difficult at the best of times, especially when you are trying to organise children, partners, work, and everything else in between. As Paula Flinn explains it can happen smack bang in the middle of it all, with surprising benefits! There’s no doubt about it – being a mum comes with many challenges! And for me, just two of those challenges have been getting my son to sleep, and finding time to exercise. Well, the other day I managed to do both…at the same time! I was hanging out the washing, with Jack in the Baby Bjorn carrier. He loves movement, but was fidgety and tired. I was going to have to move some more if I was going to get him to sleep. So I put the washing down and started lunging. I lunged all the way down the length of the washing line, then all the way back. Just a few minutes later, when I looked down at Jack he was fast asleep! Since then I have found he loves squats too! There are so many things you can do to fit exercise into your day. Don’t think you have to do a block of 30 - 60 minutes; you can spread it out – 10 minutes here and there. Every little bit makes you stronger, happier and healthier. Lunges and squats are fantastic strengthening exercises for your legs and butt. There are many other easy exercises you can do at home to improve your health and fitness.

Try these simple moves when you get a few minutes spare throughout your day. Not only are they great for improving your strength, they are also fantastic for burning fat and increasing your metabolism.

Squats What to do: 1. Stand with your feet hip to shoulder width apart. 2. Sit your bum back as if you are sitting on a chair. 3. Try to bend your knees to a 90º angle, but ensure your knees don’t go past toes. 4. Breathe out as you power up with your legs and bum back to starting position. Do 3 sets of 15. Tips: Keep your shoulders back and down and chest up. Activate your core – bellybutton to spine – this will stabilise your abdominal area. Stick your bum back. If using dumbbells hold them at your side. What it works: Your legs, bum and core.

Push Ups Mention Offspring ra magazine fo nt u co 25% dis ing on your sitt fee

What to do: 1. Face down, start on your toes or knees, with your hands at shoulder level, palms flat on the floor and slightly more than shoulder-width apart. 2. Look forward rather than straight down at the floor. 3. Lower your body until your chest almost touches the floor, keeping your body straight. 4. Exhale as you straighten your arms and push up. Do 3 sets of 15. Tips: Try not to bend or arch your upper or lower back as you push up. Activate your core – bellybutton to spine. Lead with your chest, not your head. Start on your toes and do as many as you can before moving to your knees. If you can’t do any on your toes or knees, try it standing and pushing away from a wall. (There is always an option for every fitness level.)

What it works: Chest, shoulders, arms, lower back and abs.

Towel Pulls

What to do: 1. Take a towel and loop it around a fixed pole or tree at chest height. 2. Grasp one end of the towel in each hand and stand with your feet close to the pole. 3. Lean back, letting the towel take your body weight. 4. Exhale as you pull yourself towards the pole. 5. Think about squeezing your shoulder blades together as you pull yourself in. 6. Slowly return to the start position as you inhale. Do 3 sets of 15. Tips: Activate your core and keep your chest up. Always keep

What to do: 1. Lie face down on a mat or floor resting on the forearms, palms flat on the floor; 2. Push off the floor, raising up onto toes and resting on the elbows; 3. Keep your back flat, in a straight line from head to heels; 4. Tilt your pelvis and contract your abdominals to prevent your bum from sticking up in the air. 5. Hold for 1-2 minutes or as long as you can. the movement slow and controlled. Keep your elbows tucked in. What it works: Your back, arms and core.

HEALTH

Plank

Tips: Ensure you activate your core throughout the exercise. What it works: This exercise builds the abs and back.

Bridge What to do: 1. Lie face up on the floor, knees bent. 2. Push body into a bridge position by lifting bottom, hips and lower back off the floor, in a straight line from the knees to the chin 3. Support your weight on your feet and arms. 4. Hold for 1-2 minutes. Tips: For a challenge hold something between your knees. What it works: This exercise is excellent for strengthening and improving stability in the core. It also strengthens the bum, upper back, shoulders, arms and lower back.

NOTE: Baby optional for all exercises! Now all you need to add to the equation is a bit of cardio – anything that gets you moving, with a bit of huff and puff. Try walking, running, swimming, cycling, dancing, even vacuuming or scrubbing floors will do it! Do a few of these simple exercises every day and you have the perfect mix - a balanced, full body workout. It’s as simple as that! And don’t forget your stretches – this will improve flexibility and joint mobility, and reduce the chances of injury.

TRAVEL

An insider’s family guide to Bali By Rebecca Hamer

Rebecca is an Early Childhood Education specialist who lives in Bali, Indonesia teaching at an International School. With Offspring readers in mind, Rebecca has comprised a special guide for WA families to traveling in Bali. Well some say that I have the best life ever, and I think that I have to totally agree with them. Yes, I live and work in Bali as a teacher at an international school. So whilst I do have a normal working week, and I must admit that I work harder here than I did in Perth - I also get to play hard too. It’s not a bad life when I have world-renowned beaches, restaurants, shopping and activities right here at my doorstep. I have now become my own “Bali Tourist Advisory Office” for friends and family from Perth who are taking advantage of the discount airfares and I am always asked about the best places to visit when coming to Bali, especially as most of my social group now involves children. So my advice has gone from where to get the best beer and what nightclub opens til dawn, to how can I have shopping space when I

74 Offspring | summer 2010

have a pram with me and what hotels have a “kids club”. So I thought I would share with all the Offspring readers some of my tips and recommendations on “Travelling to Bali with a Family”. In my opinion, Bali is a clean and safe environment to bring your children on holiday and it doesn’t have to be restricted to the typical tourist shopping Meccas of Kuta. There are so many educational activities to participate in that allow your children to experience another culture, sights, sounds and smells - it is definitely a sensory experience. My advice is to find accommodation in Legian or Seminyak, take advantage of the caring nature of the Balinese when they dote on your children, hire any baby equipment you need in Bali (extra shopping space), relax and be pampered in a spa and don’t stress about getting Bali Belly. As long as you are strict with hand washing, there should be no problem. People are so cautious about opening their mouths in the shower and eating only at five star hotels, but in reality the unfamiliar bacteria is all around you and carrying some hand sanitiser on you is the best way to stay healthy and enjoy Bali.

Echo Beach Restaurant This is my top pick for best value for money and also my local hang out here in Bali. Overlooking the world famous surf break at Canggu, The Beach House is popular with surfers and families with live music every Sunday night. It is definitely great fun for all the family, and budding singers can join in. The large bar is the best place to make new friends and enjoy the great views and lively atmosphere. Taman Safari and Marine Park Restaurant, Accommodation Educational Family Fun Home to hundreds of amazing animals representing more than 50 species, including some rare and endangered species. Combining Balinese cultural ambience with African Savannah, the Bali Safari and Marine Park feature the Sumatran elephant, Sumatran tiger, white tiger, leopard, komodo dragon and cheetah and many more. Fulfilling its mission of conservation, education and recreation, the park has a not to be missed Elephant and Orangutan Show. I highly recommend that you consider staying at the Safari Parks accommodation facilities where the lions are roaming around directly under your four-star African treetop bungalow. The Mara River Safari Lodge offers tranquility with the beautiful view of Mount Agung and the Bali eastern coast. In Perth you might be woken up by the rubbish truck or some backyard chooks. But at the Mara River Safari Lodge you can wake up to be greeted with the sounds of the Chapman Zebras, Oryxes, Wildebeest, & White Rhinos and Lions Jl. Cozy Salon and Day Spa Facial, Hair conditioning, Massage, Body scrub, Reflexology, Manicure, Pedicure Until quite recently, getting a massage in Bali fell broadly into two categories, grossly overpriced five star hotel treatments or a cheap but hit and miss beach massage. The key to Cozy’s success can be attributed to its 69 therapists where each member of staff has completed 200 hours of specialised training Being an expat that lives in Bali – this is my top pick and I am always popping in for a treatment at Cozy, as I see it as the best value for money by far. My recommendation is to have the “Scalp Sensation”. Jl Sunset Blok A/3, Kuta P (0361) 766762 E cozytimes@yahoo.com
