Go Green - Design a Sustainable Future At AkzoNobel, we regularly consult external experts on how to design a sustainable future. The article below is Aqrab Ali Rana’s take on key measures to ensure a greener future. Pakistan, with its heavy economic dependence on agriculture, has a great stake in the changing climatic conditions of the world. The built environment is the largest consumer of energy resources in the country and consequently the largest contributor to pollution. It is time now that we build with greater empathy towards our environment.
3 Simple Ways to Overcome Negative Effects of Urban Development Simple measures that can be taken to ensure green, sustainable growth include the following:
Using the Right Coatings Using coatings such as ICI Dulux Weathershield Sun Reflect with high albedo and high solar reflective index reduces heat gain into a building and thus lowers the overall temperature of interior spaces. Conscious choices made while selecting coatings and surfaces such as ICI Dulux’s low or no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) products can lead to greener and healthier outdoor & indoor environments.
Expert’s Profile: Aqrab Ali Rana is the CEO of Pakistan Green Building Council, a nonprofit organization. Pakistan GBC’s mission is “To introduce, promote and advocate sustainable concepts and practices to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.”
Embracing Technology Technology such as BIM software should be used before buildings are constructed to assess building performance holistically before actual execution on site. This will allow us to build more efficiently and also help in quantifying cost-saving impacts of using green measures in construction.
Contributing as Individuals All stakeholders, particularly end users, need to play their part in ensuring a cleaner environment. Efforts should be made to manage solid waste such as plastics, papers, tin cans, glass, cardboard, metal, trash and wet waste. The more we reuse and recycle waste, the more we ensure a better living environment for ourselves and for our future generations.
Pakistan Green Building Council, working under the World Green Building Council, is part of a global network of 102 countries working towards evolving green practices around the world.

Keep Cool & Save Money with ICI Dulux Weathershield Sun Reflect & ICI Dulux Weathershield Roof In recent times, electricity bills have rocketed to sky high levels. That, combined with increased electricity consumption caused by the effects of global warming on our already hot climate, has created a heavy dent in consumers’ savings. At ICI Dulux, our sustainable products not only help protect the environment, but they also help our consumers save money by lowering their electricity consumption. Here’s how: Beat the Heat with ICI Dulux World of Weathershield We face a hot climate with summer heat dominated days and our homes end up absorbing most of this heat, causing rooms to feel warm and stuffy. Our cooling gadgets thus have to work much harder to cool the indoor air resulting in a very high price in terms of higher energy bills! ICI Dulux exterior paints reflect heat and keep rooms and buildings cooler, leading to massive energy savings! Take for example ICI Dulux Weathershield Sun Reflect, an exterior emulsion paint formulated with AkzoNobel’s revolutionary “Keep Cool” heat reflective technology.
After application of ICI Dulux Weathershield Sun Reflect & ICI Dulux Weathershield Roof
This paint offering has been clinically tested to reduce exterior surface temperature by up to 5 Degrees Celsius, even for darker colours. What’s more, even lower temperatures can be achieved by blocking the heat before it enters your home or attic via ICI Dulux Weathershield Roof, which lowers surface temperature by upto 7 Degrees Celsius! This offering has a super protective film which also resists hairline cracks, making it more durable.
Result? Less electricity consumption, higher savings!

and Some More Money with ICI Dulux Light & Space Many of today’s new buildings have smaller windows and corridors with little natural light, which results in use of a lot of artificial light – causing high electricity bills. ICI Dulux has the perfect solution to this problem, a solution your pockets will absolutely love. Makes Room Brighter With ICI Dulux Light & Space
An Example Using Electric Light
ICI Dulux Light & Space is a range of colours that use groundbreaking LumiTec Technology to significantly enhance the light levels in a room. Light that would be absorbed by conventional paint is instead reflected back, making rooms look brighter and more spacious. Decorating with ICI Dulux Light & Space colours will mean less artificial light is required. That can mean a significant cost and energy saving over the lifetime of the building. Being more reflective and less absorbent of light it uses up to 22% less light energy. Lighting can be set to a lower level or switched on for shorter periods.
The illustrations below show two rooms – both lit with conventional tungsten bulbs. The room decorated with ICI Dulux Light & Space paint has Swan White on the ceiling and Moonlight Blue on the walls. The other room is decorated with conventional paint of similar hues. The ICI Dulux Light & Space room achieves the same levels of illumination, despite using 22% less lighting energy. That’s equivalent to reducing the wattage of the bulb in that room from 50W to only 40W, adding up to a significant environmental and cost saving over time.
Light Absorption Values Conventional paint colour vs ICI Dulux Light & Space colour of similar hue:
Result? Now its possible to save on electricity bills and still have a well-lit room! 360 lux

Conventional Emulsion Light Absorption Value = 16%
ICI Dulux Light & Space Light absorption Value= 8%
Energy-saving ICI Dulux Light & Space colours Lux: A unit of visible light power falling on a surface
†This figure is based on theoretical calculations on pairs of bare rooms of dimensions 4 × 3 × 2.4m where the light incident on all surfaces is averaged. The rooms all have the same mid-grey floor colour (LRV 50). They have a white ceiling and a colour on the walls. In one of each pair these are from the ICI Dulux Light & Space range. In the other they are conventional products. The ICI Dulux Light & Space and the conventional paint colours have similar hue (colour family) and chroma (intensity of colour). The energy savings will not always equate to 22%. They will vary depending on the contents, dimensions and floor colour of the room and will differ if lighting in particular areas needs to be controlled. The calculated figure varies from 14% to 28% depending on the wall colour chosen. The actual light energy savings achieved in practice may differ from the calculations.
Healthy Coatings
Products and Functionalities for Today and Tomorrow You know that strong odour you smell when you open a can of paint? It’s from chemicals called Volatile Organic Compounds, some of which have been linked to cancer. This is why lower VOC coatings are at the heart of the ICI Dulux current interior coatings product range.
What are VOCs? Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are organic solvents used in conventional paint that evaporate into the atmosphere and combine with nitrogen oxide and sunlight to create low level smog and ozone. This causes air pollution, damages people’s health and contributes to global warming.
Reduced Emissions for Improved Indoor Air Quality ICI Dulux offers a great range of low VOC and no-odour paints. With the recent launch of our odourless, low VOC ICI Dulux Inspire Emulsion, we have heavily reduced the carbon footprint of our colours, but still offer the same great ICI Dulux quality.

Make Sustainable Choices The concern of our environment no longer remains in the relam of NGO activism and student projects. It is a real-time concern that constantly stares us in the face. The situation is alarming, but it is not irreversible. Small changes can usher a long-lasting positive impact and we may still be able to leave a safer planet for our future generations. Here are few things that you can do.... Choose paints carefully Consider using more durable or eco-friendly products. To assess how eco-friendly any product is, there are three main questions that need to be addressed. When you know what’s in it, how long it lasts, and how much of it you will need, you can make a judgement about its sustainability. Products that are free from added lead and mercury, low VOC, energy efficient and long lasting are the best choices for you. Also try to reduce the amount of paint you use by using paints that offer good coverage. Another pro-environment step you can take is to donate or reuse leftover paint.
Prevent Waste and Save Water
What's in it?
How much will you need?
How long does it last?
Scrape off excess paint, then wash brushes and rollers in a container rather than waste running water from the tap. By wrapping it in an airtight plastic bag with tape around the handle overnight, you’ll keep painting equipment perfectly supple for reuse the next day. Advise your painter/contractor to do the same if you’re not painting yourself!

Architects and builders around the country are doing great work with regards to sustainable development. Here’s a look at a fascinating project done by Rashid Rasheed and Saad Mehmood in Shiekhupura.
Ecommunity, Shiekhupura, Punjab, Pakistan Architects: Rashid Rasheed and Saad Mehmood at SR Designworks Painted with ICI Dulux Products
Case Study The Ecommunity Project is the first ecologically sensitive development in Pakistan and city of Shiekhupura was chosen for the project because workers and managers from the Industries around Shiekhupura have to commute to the city of Lahore every day due to lack of proper housing, schools, medical facilities and entertainment. The developers desired a housing development, which would be at par with the facilities available in Lahore and could attract the industrial work force as well as the people living in Shiekhupura city who are not used to planned developments with entertainment facilities, schools and health clubs. The show house was designed as a sustainable model for energy conservation, reduction in water use, and boasts passive design element like excellent daylight in rooms, cross ventilation, courtyards and green separation walls between houses. It also has active elements like double glazed windows, green roof, LED light fixtures. Inverter based air-conditioning and heating. It has been modeled and tested for energy efficiency after it was completed with real time data.
“It is the first house of this kind in the country’s housing development sector; the first house registered from Pakistan for LEED Certification with the USGBC [United States Green Building Council]. It is a serious investment from our client/developer into environmentally sustainable projects and also a response to the increasing energy crises of the country.” Trusted by Rashid Rasheed Principal architect at SR Designworks
