Trump victory is a media wake-up call

D

onald Trump’s victory in the presidential race says a lot about the country and how Americans feel about the press. During his run to the White House, Trump castigated the media for biased coverage, while his supporters yelled at reporters to do their jobs. The election should be a wake-up call for the press. Not only did most of the media and the pollsters get it wrong, but mainstream journalists misread the mood of the country. That’s because many national pundits, network talking heads and staffers at the big daily newspapers are not in step with the rest of America. The press is no longer seen as the watchdog of the country, but its enemy. People don’t trust the media. LOCAL Community News doesn’t take sides or endorse politicians, and that helps build trust with our readers. For other media outlets, it’s time to get back to basics, to write impartial and unbiased stories, to step down from ivory towers, to stop acting like an ennobled elite and to cease championing wasteful experiments in social engineering. The press must remember that it serves the public, not rules them. The reporting surrounding the Trump campaign and the reality of what really happened shows a great disconnect in the press. Big media is out of touch with its audience. Way out of touch.

LOCAL COMMENTARY

’Tis the season for good memories by SUSAN YERKES

T

he holiday season is upon us, with all kinds of merry and bright attractions and distractions. After the last election cycle, that’s a gift in itself. Maybe that’s why this year I started thinking about gifts earlier than my usual last-minute rush to find the perfect present. However, it wasn’t so much about gifts in the here and now – it was remembrances of Christmas past, Yuletide wishes and offerings longed for and unanticipated.

My first recollections of Christmas are of a solitary nighttime vigil I held in the wee hours in our home, standing mesmerized in my footie pajamas before a little lighted Nativity scene on the table in our front hall. I found something profoundly sweet and comforting about the peaceful family, surrounded by sheep, donkeys, shepherds and angels, and the big star hanging over them all. Here in San Antonio, I discovered a world of crèches in folk-art nacimientos, or Nativity scenes. The late, great Marshall Steves Sr. and his wife Patsy collected (and donated) many from Mexico and South America to form a section of the San Antonio Museum of Art’s old holiday market Bazar Sábado. The late Gloria Cadena was the city’s nacimiento champ. Her 3,000-plus-piece “Nacimiento – A Fantasy Christmas Village” was many years in the making, and eventually included everything from a tiny Alamo to a bullfight scene. There are plenty of living nacimientos around town, too, mostly in front of area churches. My favorite is San

Fernando Cathedral’s annual La Gran Posada, a candlelit procession in the heart of downtown re-enacting the story of Joseph and Mary seeking shelter in Bethlehem. This year’s free event starts 6 p.m. Dec. 18 in Milam Park and treks through the streets to the historic church. December also brings the commemoration of Hanukkah, Judaism’s Festival of Lights. Hanukkah has its own beautiful ceremonies. One of the coolest is Chabad Lubavitch of South Texas’ annual “Chanukah on the River,” this year at 4 p.m. Dec. 28 at Arneson River Theatre and La Villita. From river barges adorned with big menorahs to a concert and traditional festival, it’s a great place to observe a treasured ritual. Even the most commercial aspect of the holidays can evoke marvelous memories. Many folks still remember the 40-foot-tall Santa Claus waving tirelessly atop the old Joske’s downtown, and briefly experiencing a resurrection above Dillard’s. Joske’s also was Christmas-wish central for thousands of kids in the 1950s

and ’60s, with its spectacular fourthfloor Fantasyland. Long lines snaked through a fantastic, snowy forest full of singing animals on the way to asking for presents from Santa in his “Texas home.” The only gift I ever recall requesting was always the same – a horse. While the real thing never materialized, I did amass dozens of plastic equines and horse books, particularly “The Black Stallion” series. The best substitute was the trail rides from the old stables by Brackenridge Park, and the Sunday polo matches in the fields there. In the ’80s, when I returned to San Antonio after years of being away, the stables still stood and I found a patient trainer, Marty Allen Wernle, and finally learned to ride. I got to know the late Dr. Leo Cuello, and his magnificent Arabian stallion Cass Ole, star of “The Black Stallion” movie. A couple of years later I found a horse of my own – a beautiful Arabian named Potential. That’s the thing about Christmas wishes. You never know when they might come true. syerkes@localcommunitynews.com

Fix school finance in 2017

A

ddressing Texas’ broken system of public school finance should be a priority for lawmakers when the 85th legislative session gavels to a start in January. Elected officials need to follow the lead of the state Supreme Court, which this past May issued a ruling calling on the Legislature to repair school funding. The court indicated the process remains inadequately subsidized while the tax burden on residents is unfairly weighted. Especially hard hit are the Chapter 41 school districts classified as property wealthy. Superintendents there are nearly uniform

in condemning the procedure they say bleeds too much money in the form of local tax dollars slated for their schools, which are in turn collected by the state and then redistributed to property-poor districts. No small wonder this share-thewealth measure is more commonly known as the Robin Hood plan. Fiscally supporting the state’s public school system benefits all students, but the process also should be fair. For decades, Texas has struggled to get it right and continually fails. In addition, according to some accounts of recent hearings, portions of the taxes collected for school finance are instead being redirected to other programs. How is this fair to pupils, their teachers and the taxpayers? If you care about equitable school funding, let your elected representative know. It’s time to go back to the blackboard and draw up a more evenhanded plan. -The Local Community News editorial board includes Harry Lees, Gregg Rosenfield and Thomas Edwards.

home’s open garage and emerges later carrying a large tool chest. The video then shows the SUV driving away. CHURCHILL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE ANNIE CHANDLER GREVERS will be inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame for the class of 2017, one of five to receive the honor. According to a release, Grevers is the most decorated female swimmer in San Antonio; she was a threetime state champion in the 100-meter breaststroke, and a member of two state championship relay teams and still holds the state record in the breaststroke. Grevers attended the University of Arizona, where she broke a record as the 2010 NCAA champion in the 100-meter breaststroke, and was also on the 2008 NCAA Championship team. Grevers also won a gold medal in the 50-meter breaststroke at the 2010 World University Games and at the 2011 Pan American Games, as well as competed in three Olympic Trials.

“The street committee has been merged with the drainage committee,” said Alderman Douglas Gregory. “Now that we’ve merged as a committee, we’re going to have to get together as a committee to come about with some recommendations (regarding future street repairs and drainage) and that has yet to be determined, but it will be soon.” Gregory has served as chairman of the drainage committee and Alderman John Squires oversaw the street committee. “I decided that the focus of these two committees could be aligned to better work within the financial restrictions and limited funds available,” said Mayor Tim Howell. “By combining the committees, engineering fees and

CASTLE HILLS continues from pg. 12 other resources could be shared.” The newly formed committee is looking at which streets will be repaired or reconstructed during the next year in the city’s effort to focus on infrastructure. “Infrastructure is extremely important and a major focus of the city right now,” Gregory said. “There has to be a thorough vetting of any future proposals, and they will be forthcoming soon.” Any proposal would have to go through the new committee for approval, then to the City Council for final consideration, Gregory said. Currently, numerous city streets have had either major or minor repairs and reconstruction. According to city officials, the following streets have been scheduled for pavement replacement and water and sewer work in 2016 and should be finished by the end of the year, weather permitting: Adobe Drive, Atwater Drive, Danube Drive, East Castle Lane, West Castle Lane, Gladiola Lane, Krameria Drive, Mimosa Drive, Twinleaf Lane and Zornia Drive. “These are part of a joint effort between the city and (San Antonio Water System) to repair or replace water and sewer lines and repave streets that should not have to be disturbed again for many years,” said City Manager Mike Shands. “We’re in a joint contract with SAWS on redoing several streets in the city. They’re doing water and sewer lines and we’re doing paving.” The city continually is upgrading streets, he added. “In addition the city has paved, seal coated or rejuvenated numerous streets throughout the city as well as continuing to provide maintenance through pothole repair, crack sealing and routine street maintenance,” Shands said. According to Shands, the funds are from an annual allocation of $225,000 in the city budget as well as an allotment of $650,000 earmarked for the joint effort with SAWS. The water utility has allocated a total of $2 million in funding to address older infrastructure in the city. In December, the council is scheduled to consider a proposal from city drainage engineers to allot $350,000, which will be used to curb flooding along North Manton Lane and the Carolwood Drive and Banyan Drive drainage areas, according to Shands.

apitol Park Little League is searching for a new home after losing its current ball field and then being turned away from McAllister Park.

“We’re looking for an alternate spot as we speak. We’re ready to build, we have donors and matching funds lined up,” said Rob Foster, president of the league. In addition to financial assistance from supporters, the league is asking the city for $2 million from the 2017-22 bond issue to help defray costs for an $8 million proposed complex that will sit on 30 acres. The City Council is expected to review suggestions from five bond committees including parks and

recreation before approving a slate of propositions for the May ballot. For 50 years, the league has been located at 11793 Bulverde Road. This year, property owner Zachry Construction Corp. said it needed to reclaim the land in 2017 to expand operations. City officials and the McAllister Park Little League recommended that Capitol Park move to McAllister Park. However, a backlash from several groups opposed to creating another sports field in the park — including Friends of McAllister Park, San Antonio Road Runners and South Texas Off-Road Mountain Bikers — led to those plans being shelved. On Oct. 11, city officials, including District 10 Councilman Mike Gallagher, recommended Capitol Park look elsewhere. Meanwhile, upgrades to McAllister Park — also on the table for the bond issue — can be separately considered. “I’m glad that this issue came up. Not only did it get people involved in the public-input process, but it resulted in

SALOCALLOWDOWN.COM LITTLE LEAGUE continues from pg. 14 separating the proposal into two separate projects,” Gallagher said. “McAllister Park is now on the list for needed improvements, and city staff is actively looking for a new home for the Little League.” On Nov. 14, the parks and recreation bond committee recommended $2 million in funding for McAllister from a proposed land bridge in Hardberger Park. For years, the city has supported Little League baseball. Funding from the 2003-07 bond program was allocated for the McAllister Park league, soccer fields at Palo Alto College and sports fields in districts 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10. The Friends of McAllister Park President Laura Matthews said she did not support the move by Capitol Park out of fear it would destroy green space and trails. “There are places that it can go that would have minimal impact and that is where they should be looking,” Matthew said Foster said the league’s traditional home has plumbing and electrical issues,

as well as broken lights that can’t be fixed without spending hundreds of dollars. “We’re nonprofit,” he said. “Registration goes to cover insurance, field maintenance, uniforms and hats. We don’t make any money.” The league tries to keep costs down through volunteerism, Foster said. “It’s all volunteers, everybody’s got to chip in and keep the park going, keep it mowed, weed-eat it, keep the fields safe and playable,” he added. “It takes everyone.” About 500 families belong to the league. The city has four locations in mind for a new ballpark; those were still being vetted in early December. Kristi Lehane’s son and daughter used to play for Capitol Park but transferred to the Buffalo Valley Youth Association in Schertz because the former’s field had deteriorated. “I see where the other side stands. But for me, the future of kids being able to play sports on good fields and be part of a bigger community is more important,” Lehane said.

Nirenberg: Programs increase tolerance and understanding

The Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio has received a grant from AT&T that will help increase education outreach programs for area schools. The Holocaust, carried out by the Nazis during World War II, led to the extermination of 6 million Jews and others. Photos by Collette Orquiz

A

$15,000 grant from AT&T to the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio will help shine more light on a dark chapter of history so that it isn’t repeated, officials said. The funds will aid educators in raising awareness through programs about the Holocaust, a genocidal period during World War II when the Nazis imprisoned and exterminated 6 million Jews and other groups deemed “subhuman.” “You still see genocide in our world,

such as in places like Darfur and Rwanda, and even recently in ISIS attacks that are genocidal,” said Matthew Faulkner, the museum’s program coordinator. “We don’t want people to be bystanders. The visitors that come to the museum, we want them to stand up to what they see as wrong. Just one voice can change the world for the better. We want our visitors to understand that they can be that person, that one voice.” The museum, located at 12500 N.W.

Military Highway on the Campus of the San Antonio Jewish Community, is a worthy recipient of the grant, according to an AT&T spokeswoman. “The museum’s innovative curriculum includes a ‘Learn and Remember’ program that falls right in line with our philanthropic goals, which is to drive innovation in education and promote student success in school

This piece of history is so critical to our future because it shows us what can happen and how it can happen when the moral fabric of a society unravels.” Area teachers are hungry for accurate information to help students understand the history of World War II, Flores added. “The museum has done a great

“The Happy Handyman” Written by his daughter, Trudy Lesage

With the cooler weather... whew, we are also having shorter days. Are there are some areas outside that you need a light? Calling an electrician and having a new light installed can be expensive. So why not do it yourself? Dorcy makes a wireless LED motion light for security. You don’t have to have an electrician because it runs on a battery. It’s a bright light that covers 350 square feet and completely adjustable up to 180 degrees. It comes with everything that you need to install, all you will need is the batteries. So put down that flashlight when going to the back yard and walk in the light! We have had such extreme weather in San Antonio for the last two weeks. One day it’s sunny and 70 degrees and the next day it’s chilly and we are reaching for a sweaters. It’s that kind of weather that calls for The Big Heat and the Thermo Cube so that you are not caught off guard with the temperature change. Thermo Cubes are electrical plugs that will turn on and off with the temperature change. If the weather drops to 35, the Thermo Cube turns on what you have plugged into it (like a Big Heat) and then when the day warms up to 45, it will turn off. The Thermo Cube and a Big Heat are a perfect duo for a green house, garage, work shed. Right now I am sitting and writing at my desk with a Big Heat at my feet. My desk is at the back of the store and when the warehouse doors are open it’s the Antarctic around my desk. The Big Heat is such a good personal heater and with the weather being as up and down as it is it makes sense to use a personal heater instead of heating up the whole store or the entire house. If you have a certain cold spot in your home, The Big Heat is the answer to keeping warm. Talking about keeping warm; your feet are very important in keeping your whole body warm and Snoozies are a great little slipper to wear around the house. They come in a rubber non- slip sole so that you can even go to the mailbox in them and still keep your feet dry. Now to the email..... Question: I have developed a rust stain in my washing machine. It also has hard water deposits and soap scum. So is there a product that I can use to remove rust and clean off the soap scum? Answer: Iron Out is the product for you. It will chemically change the rust and scum so that they will easily just wash away. Just add Iron Out to an empty washing machine and run a full cycle hot water. Iron Out is not abrasive and will not harm the inside of the tub of the washer. For those who have front loaders- Washing Machine Magic helps with the soap scum, hard water stains and odor. You can use the Washing Machine Magic directly on the rubber seals, or put 1/2cup in the detergent drawer and then run a full cycle on the hottest temperature.

THE COMPLETION OF THE WEST HAUSMAN ROAD PROJECT, CALLED THE “single largest voter-approved roadway project in the city’s history,” was commemorated Nov. 14 at Fox Park Trailhead, 6518 W. Hausman Road, during a ribbon-cutting attended by Mayor Ivy Taylor, District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg and other city officials and guests. The $73.5 million initiative reconstructed 3.4 miles of thoroughfare from Loop 1604 and Interstate 10, according to officials. Improvements featured “five bridges, utility upgrades, drainage improvements, driveway approaches, left-turn lanes, flood-control measures and low-impact development in compliance with the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone,” a spokeswoman said. Other enhancements include a “10-footwide concrete hike and bike trail on the south side of the roadway, which connects to the Leon Creek Greenway hike and bike trails.” The betterments also feature a public art installation titled “Leon Creek Crossing” by artist Barbara Grygutis. SHAVANO PARK’S NATIONAL NIGHT OUT OBSERVANCE OCT. 4 saw 250 participants at City Hall, and at the 14 host homes up to 400 residents showed up, said Mayor Bob Werner in a city newsletter. The annual event brings together neighbors, business, city officials and firstresponders to keep neighborhoods safe. STUDENTS FROM CLARK HIGH AND BLATTMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS showed a great response to Shavano Park’s Fire Safety Poster Contest, with nearly 140 pieces of art displayed at City Hall. According to Mayor Bob Werner,

judging the posters was difficult because there were so many worthy entries. The grand-prize winner attends Blattman. THE NORTHSIDE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD APPROVED THREE BOND RESOLUTIONS that include lower interest rates and save $55 million, officials said. According to a release, the measures allow the district to issue refunding bonds. BUS DRIVERS ARE NEEDED in the Northside Independent School District, according to officials. The 32-houra-week jobs offer competitive pay, medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits, as well as training, uniforms and paid holidays. For more or to apply, visit nisd.com/transportation. THE NORTHSIDE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT DEDICATED ITS SECOND COMPREHENSIVE sports gym on Nov. 30 with a Texas-size pep rally. The Northside Sports Gym is located at the Farris Athletic Complex, 8400 N. Loop 1604 West. It seats 2,500 and has 88,389 square feet of space, compared to Paul Taylor’s 27,000 square feet. Taylor was the last NISD competitive gym to open, debuting in 1973. CASTLE HILLS AUTHOR CHRIS BIRD HAS a new book out, “Surviving a Mass Killer Rampage: When Seconds Count, Police Are Still Minutes Away.” The former police reporter and concealed-handgun instructor, who has written several books on armed self-defense, details in his latest work how people can protect themselves with a firearm or other means when a mass shooter or armed terrorist is attacking.
