LOCAL’s new website debuts
L
OCAL Community News has launched its new website. Readers visiting www. localcommunitynews.com will find the latest hyperlocal coverage of area neighborhoods, schools, government and events. During the last four years, LOCAL has experimented with a variety of website options, including online flip-books. At the same time, our audience kept asking, “When are you going to have a searchable news website?” Well, the time has come. We created LOCAL’s monthly print editions to fill a gap in community news, and our objective has not changed. The newspapers remain our core product. Our website, however, allows us to expand and enhance the coverage that matters most to our audience. There are several advantages to the website. Because of the staggered print deadlines, many calendar submissions go by the wayside. Now, there will be a forum to post these releases in a more timely fashion online. The site also makes it easier for readers to search out stories that appeared in print. The site is conveniently arranged by ZIP codes. We hope readers will enjoy our latest information conduit. Please visit the site and send your feedback to tedwards@localcommunitynews.com.

LOCAL COMMENTARY
Good medicine for all by SUSAN YERKES
I
’ve always found it interesting that two of this city’s biggest economic generators are the military medical establishment and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. With thousands of military and civilian contract employees and a budget in the billions, military health is a powerful part of San Antonio’s economy. There’s a long history of collaboration between UTHSCSA and the military medical folks. However, the
relationship recently took a huge leap forward with UTHSCSA’s creation of the Military Health Institute. The idea came from Dr. Bill Henrich, health-science center president. “Ask any San Antonian what is unique about the city and I would guess the military here would be one of the answers,” Henrich said. “As president here, I’ve seen a number of successful projects with the military, and a big portion of our teaching involves care of veterans and staffing the (Veterans Affairs medical facilities), but we still weren’t taking full advantage of all the opportunities to collaborate for the benefit of the military, the university and the wider community. The institute was intended to do that.” Dr. Byron Hepburn, former commander of the 59th Medical Wing at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland and a one-time deputy surgeon general of the Air Force, heads the institute, which opened in late 2014. He is the perfect person to create the kind of collaborative incubator Henrich had in mind.
“We have a unique interface with VA and the Department of Defense, with the huge military presence, and the amount of research and teaching. Also, the fact the VA is co-located with us, and our faculty is doing most (of) all the research at the VA,” Hepburn said. The focus is to fast-forward research in military medicine at these institutions through partnerships, and the Military Health Institute is working with the other such facilities, as well as with the entire UT System. Current projects include major research on post-traumatic stress disorder, a study of new pain relief for burns, work on long-term outcomes of vascular-extremity injuries, care of gastrointestinal injuries, new indicators of traumatic brain injury and research in how best to help family caregivers deal with PTSD. While these endeavors are geared to the needs of servicemen and servicewomen, the results can improve care for everyone. “There are layers of goodness,”
Hepburn said. “Research done for the military also has direct applicability to all humans, from a burned child to the victim of a motorcycle crash.” The institute’s networking function is also connecting researchers inside and outside the armed forces to coordinate studies and jump-start pilot projects, Hepburn said. After just two years, the results are impressive. In 2016, total funding UTHSCSA received for DOD-related projects increased nearly 45 percent, from $8.5 million in 2015 to about $12.3 million. When I asked Henrich about how much he envisions the institute growing, he said, “The sky’s the limit.” The Military Health Institute is a great way for a lot of smart folks to work together doing important things. It’s good news for UTHSCSA, for veterans and for active-duty personnel. It’s good news for the South Texas economy. Most important, it’s good news for medical research, and for all of us living here in Military City, USA, and beyond. syerkes@localcommunitynews.com

Considering vouchers
L
awmakers of the 85th Legislature should continue pushing for initiatives that ease the financial burden on parents wanting choices about where their kids attend school.
Efforts to use taxpayer dollars — or vouchers — allowing guardians to enroll their offspring in private or parochial institutions failed during the last session. Many public-school educators decry vouchers. They fear taking public monies away from their districts hurts students and undermines the overall performance of Texas’ tax-supported institutions. On the other hand, parents fed up with schools that fail pupils should have a right to decide how and where
their hard-earned dollars are spent to pay for their children’s education. Just like in a free market, the competition could help improve public schools. Proponents also argue vouchers are a mechanism to lift low-income students out of underperforming institutions and place them in a better learning environment. Initiatives in 2017 include giving tax credits to companies donating funds to poor or special-needs students, so they can afford tuition at private or parochial schools. Another option could be the education savings account, which funnels taxpayer dollars to parents as a debit card to pay for schooling other than public. In the end, parents have a right to seek the best education possible for their youngsters, while also being able to decide how to pay for it. -The Local Community News editorial board includes Harry Lees, Gregg Rosenfield and Thomas Edwards.

SAPD and K-9 officers teamed up with Castle Hills police to look for him, detaining the man a little later, according to officials. The school lockdown was lifted soon after, police say. At an open house at City Hall Dec. 8 to discuss an ongoing feasibility study by the Texas Department of Transportation, motorists and residents offered ideas on how to handle future traffic congestion. The roadways are getting more crowded, driven by population and commercial growth, officials added. “As I peruse everything, I realize that you can see it coming,” said Carlos Yarritu, who attended the meeting where TxDOT offered informational displays. “You see the development coming and there’s a problem. I hope there’s a solution. It’s not going to be an easy thing to solve.” For now, “no construction activity is planned,” according to a statement from the highway department. “This is an opportunity to get the public’s feedback on potential improvements in this area,” said TxDOT spokeswoman Laura Lopez. “There is no project planned at

There is no funding for any projects at this time.” She added, “This is just an opportunity for the public and the folks that live, work and travel this area to give us their input as to what they would like to see done in this area to help relieve congestion.” The current study focuses on 410/Northwest Military Highway to Nacogdoches Road, 281 from Nakoma Street to Jones Maltsberger Road, and San Pedro Avenue from 281 to Rector Street. The study could be finished by the end of 2017. “Once we have an idea of the areas that we have those short-, middle- and long-term plans for, then we can eventually start allocating money for those projects and then start construction,” Lopez said. Mayor Tim Howell and other city leaders attended, examining large charts, graphs and maps displayed in council chambers. Attendees left notes and pin markers on the displays to showcase ideas or indicate concerns. TxDOT officials at the open house answered visitors’ questions. “I think it’s wonderful that they’re soliciting comments from the public, because we’re the ones that drive that area on a daily basis, we’re the ones that are at risk every time we have to merge on or off 410,” said Alan Montemayor, a Castle Hills resident since 1960. “The traffic is bad in San Antonio and it’s only going to get

City manager ‘looks forward’ to chief’s report by BAIN SERNA

HAVANO PARK – The city has a new top cop, and after just three months on the job, Ray Lacy says he is setting the bar high for himself and his officers. Ray Lacy is the new police chief in Shavano Park, his latest assignment in a career that began when he joined a Police Explorer program in Mesquite nearly four decades ago. City Manager Bill Hill said Lacy’s leadership is already having a positive impact on the Police Department. Photo by Collette Orquiz
He became chief of police Oct. 3, replacing the outgoing David Creed. “The core values which I have posted on the police web page set forth the basis of our standards,” said Lacy, a 35-year police veteran. “I set the bar high, but every officer can meet and exceed those standards.”
Lawn and Leaf bags
City leaders are looking forward to working with Lacy, but they also will miss Creed, said Mayor Bob Werner. Creed was hired in October 2011 and previously worked at the Luling Police Department.
“With Chief Creed’s resignation, our community faced the difficult task of replacing a proven leader,” Werner

It’s a New Year, and I have made a New Year’s Resolution that involves you, my readers! Each first week of the month I am going to write about a new project that you can do around the house. I love it that you read the articles, and email me and tell me how much you like them. But if I can’t inspire you to try these projects, well I am not doing my job well. So let’s start with something easy like having clean windows. Washing your windows should be a simple, easy project...not something that takes a long time, or effort. It should be economical, not pricey. And that’s Renz EZ. Renz EZ is a wash that comes with an applicator that you hook up to your outdoor hose. Your Renz EZ applicator comes with a soap packet that is enough to do 16 windows around your home. Just fill the applicator with warm water, mix in the soap packet and stir, and then hook it up to your garden hose. The applicator will be all your need to wet, clean and rinse your windows. Start by rinsing the windows from the bottom up (no need to remove any screens) using the applicator. Then place your finger over the hole on the right side of the applicator and start soaping up the windows from the bottom up. Let soak for 15 seconds. Then rinse by removing your finger from the vent hole and rinse from the top down until all suds are gone. And that’s it! The Renz EZ applicator will reach to your second and third stories, and there will be no need for ladders and squeegees. It will not harm foliage, lawn or garden. Your windows will dry with no streaks, spots and you will never have to wipe your windows dry. Renz EZ works like Jet Dry does in the dishwasher, and your windows will sparkle. Clean all the windows around the house in an hour and be the “star” of the neighborhood. You might just start a new trend! I am going to start a new “Best Of” book this year and I would love to include you. Take pictures of yourself and how well your project turns out and I will place them in the book. I am looking forward to this year and hope you are too. It’s a brand new start! Now to the email..... Question: I bought some Acid Magic and put it on the driveway hoping it would clean off some rust stain that was there. And it did! So I am wondering can I use it on the roof to take care of mildew stains on my light colored roof. It worked so well I want to see if it will take care of those stains also. Answer: Acid Magic is not made for mildew. For your roof stains use a product called Jomax. It’s the least expensive way to clean your roof. Talk one pint of Jomax and add three pints of Clorox in a one or two gallon pump up sprayer and fill the rest of the sprayer with water. Let the formula sit for a minute and then give it a scrub with a broom. Rinse with clear water. Jomax is safe around plants. Jomax will clean off the mildew immediately. There are other products that clean, but they take longer to clean and they are much more expensive.

“Leadership and managing a police department begin with setting a level of expectation and ethics, and demonstrating that from the top down,” the chief said. “I wear my police uniform with pride each day, and will not ask the wonderful police officers of the Shavano Park PD to do something that I am not willing to do.” Lacy says he is impressed with the community that he has sworn to protect and serve. “The community and people of Shavano Park are wonderful,” Lacy said. “The neighborhoods are beautiful, with large trees, wildlife and lovely homes. The citizens are warm, friendly and appreciate the service that the police, fire and city employees provide to make Shavano Park a warm and wonderful city to live in.” Lacy said one of the best experiences so far is planning and working with residents and city staff. “I look forward to continuing my goal of providing excellence in service to each and every citizen for many years,” he added. City Manager Bill Hill said the new chief got right to work. “We have an outstanding Police Department and with Chief Lacy’s leadership and experience it will only get better,” Hill said. “Already he has made (an) immediate impact on handling day-to-day operations. In fact, our Police Department has recently apprehended several burglars in business and residential areas and charges are filed in the district court.” Hill said there is more to come. “I look forward to the chief ’s sixmonth assessment report, where I expect he will be making recommendations for the future,” the city manager added.

said. “Following a thorough search, we hired Chief Ray Lacy, and I could not be happier with our community’s selection. I believe that Chief Lacy is exactly the leader we wanted, and I feel confident that Chief Lacy will provide our community the leadership we need. Chief Lacy is the epitome of community policing.” Lacy, 56, began his career in October 1981. He holds a master peace officer license and is certified as an advanced instructor, a mental health officer, a special Investigator and is a crimeprevention specialist. In addition, he has completed more than 8,950 hours of advanced training, according to officials. Prior to the Shavano Park assignment, Lacy served as assistant police chief in Leon Valley from May 2015 until taking the new job. A career in police work had long been a dream, Lacy said. “I joined the Police Explorer program with the Mesquite Police Department in 1977, and enjoyed the idea of serving to help people in need,” Lacy said. “Knowing that we make a difference in the lives of people, one person at a time. That could be a task as simple as assisting someone whose car has broken down to helping someone who just lost a loved one in a car crash or due to illness.” “As a police officer, you never know from moment to moment what you will see or be doing,” he added. “My greatest joy is being able to meet and talk with people I see, as I drive around neighborhoods or stop at a local store.” Lacy said a good law-enforcement supervisor has a philosophy on leadership that sets the tone for the department.

ASTLE HILLS — If “all the world’s a stage,” then Hollie Martinez wants to make sure as many students as possible get a chance to enjoy the limelight at Antonian College Preparatory High School.

ANTONIAN continues from pg. 17 said Vice Principal Diann Montemayor. “When Hollie came on board it just really infused new life into the theater program. She’s been able to open up wonderful opportunities for students.” The change is evident in the students themselves. “Seeing the drama program flourish in such a short amount of time … is amazing,” said junior Joel DeJesus. “Ms. Martinez is the most hard working, dedicated person I have met in my 17-year-old life.” The Antonian drama program has brought teacher and students closer together in a search for a common artistic vision, pupils said. “Drama became my motivation and all these people became like family,” said junior Cassidy Moran, who recently won the “best actress” award in district and state competition; Antonian overall also won first-place in district. “They always push you to do and be better. We use each other as motivation and inspiration.”
“It’s my family away from my family, and my family is close, so that’s saying something.” said junior Kyle Hudnall. Martinez believes the arts are an important part of a high school education because they increase creativity, imagination, social and emotional growth, learning, critical thinking and problem-solving. “Theater arts allows all students to be creative, to use their imagination,” Martinez said. “Thoughts, hopes and inspirations can be expressed through

Move funded by $5 million capital campaign by COLLETTE ORQUIZ

ig Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas has found a new home in North Central after spending more than 25 years downtown.
The Harvey E. Najim South Texas Mentoring Resource Center at 10843 Gulfdale St. recently celebrated a grand opening. “This is a better location for volunteers, we’re right off (U.S. 281), we’re easily accessible and people don’t have to worry about going downtown,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Denise Barkhurst.
The staff also needed more space to continue offering services, with the hope of broadening its support to additional children. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a youthmentoring organization that focuses on long term, one-on-one consistent relationships. It recruits volunteers to be role models and mentors for at-risk children ages 5 to 18 and keeps them in the program until they’re 21. The organization has existed 120 years. “BBBS is an exceptional organization matching a volunteer known as a Big with a child who needs a positive role model in their lives, making a difference in that child’s life,” said Melissa Bauman, executive director of The Harvey E. BIG BROTHERS continues from pg. 19 well as the Kronkosky Foundation. The former facility at 202 Baltimore Ave., built in 1960, is 5,569 square feet. Big Brothers Big Sisters sold it for $1 million and incorporated the sale into the capital campaign for the new site. The new office was built in the 1990s with a price tag of $2.65 million and has three times the space at 15,000 square feet. The last occupant was an accounting firm. The building on Gulfdale also has plenty of space for growth. In 2000 the agency employed 19 staff members, served 600 kids and raised $500,000 per year. By 2009 it had grown to 39 staff members serving over 3,000 youths, with a revenue stream of $3 million. However, 1,000 children remained on a waiting list. The organization’s leaders concluded the old space wasn’t fulfilling the program’s needs. A facilities committee conducted a study, which launched the capital campaign. Barkhurst remembers volunteers having
to sit on the floor during training sessions because the space was too small, she added. “The problem was not that we couldn’t bring in any more volunteers, it was that we didn’t have the space to have the staff that would work with them. We couldn’t train them effectively, we couldn’t really conduct our program,” Barkhurst said. Renovations and furniture cost $500,000. “The move itself was way cheaper than we anticipated. The staff did a great job in terms of purging all the stuff that wasn’t necessary, packing everything up. We moved all the stuff from one office to this office in one day,” Barkhurst said. Big Sister Monica Garcia has been mentoring her Little Sister Doriana Debrow for three years and said “the sky’s the limit” when it comes to the new location. “It’s an awesome and a very welldeserved move for the organization. If you’ve ever been to the previous facility, you’d know that their space has intensely multiplied,” Garcia said. The larger facility will accommodate current and future programming and

THE NEW FACILITY INCLUDES: • An open office area for 75 administrative staff work stations with the potential to grow to 100 • Five interview rooms that provide space for up to 200 volunteer interviews a week. • A small and a large training room and conference rooms • An outdoor patio for indoor/outdoor match activities, mixers and receptions • The BBBS Alumni Mentoring Hall of Fame • Additional parking Source: Big Brothers Big Sisters
provide more space for volunteer orientation, parent and youth orientation and training sessions, as well as match activities and fundraisers. Parking has gone from 38 spots to enough for 100 vehicles. The agency is involved with 3,000 young people now, but Barkhurst said
she hopes to increase that number to 30,000 during the next 10 years. “Walking through the new building, I came up with so many ideas for future activities for us to do with our current matches and imagined how many more Bigs and Littles will benefit from the new space,” Garcia said.

New eatery stresses more wholesome, healthy food habits by GABY GALINDO
D
eciding between noshing on something sweet or something healthy can be difficult, but the new Wholesome Eating strives to give customers the best of both worlds. The eatery at 13455 Blanco Road offers gluten-free menu items and a paleo bakery. Owner Oyin Ajala is a critical care director of nursing and taught nursing for more than three years. She has helped clients adjust their eating habits and find healthier options. “I’ve always had a passion to teach people how to eat right and prevent diseases or heal their bodies with natural foods,” Ajala said, “It’s really been a pleasure converting everyday favorite food to the healthy alternative.” Since it opened in August, Wholesome Eating has focused on creating nutritious
food that isn’t restricted to just the gluten intolerant, but dishes meeting the health requirements for other diets, such as paleo, vegan, diabetic, cardiac and ketogenic. “If you care about what you eat and enjoy tasty, delicious food, you should stop by here,” Ajala said. The gluten-free muffins, baked with oat and flax flour instead of wheat, are very popular. Other items on the breakfast and lunch menu include paleo chocolate chip cookies, sweet potato oat bread and organic chicken salads. “We also serve amazing organic coffee, Bulletproof Coffee and other organic wholesome and cleansing drinks — hot or cold,” Ajala said. In addition, Wholesome Eating offers catering and bakes cakes and cupcakes to order. “Let us know you heard about us from LOCAL Community News and you get 5 percent off your entire purchase on your first visit,” Ajala said. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
