Learning from the interns
S
chools are closed, the elections are over and the mercury is rising, which means it must be summer. That also means it’s time once again for the LOCAL Community News summer-intern program. This year we welcome three interns to the newsroom: Sana O. Harhara, who attends the University of the Incarnate Word; Emeline Lakrout, a Reagan High School student; and Ruben Renteria Jr., a graduate of Our Lady of the Lake University. This is the program’s third year, and I am always grateful for the interest expressed by local journalism instructors and their students. In fact, the number of applications more than doubled. In this day and age when we hear about layoffs and dwindling circulation at the big dailies, it is reassuring to know that young people still see a future in the news profession — especially with thriving community publications such as LOCAL. One message I invariably share with the interns is this: Whether it’s information imparted by a cave painting or a hologram, the community will always hunger for news. We journalists just have to adapt to the changing platforms. The rules for the interns are the same I stress to our regular news staff: Fairness, accuracy and impartiality. I also emphasize the other foundations of our craft, which include informing, entertaining and educating readers, as well as meeting deadlines. All of these components are critically important to serving vital information needs. In return, I am sure the interns are going to teach the LOCAL staff a thing or two. New minds bring new concepts that enrich all.

LOCAL COMMENTARY
Call the swat team! by SUSAN YERKES
T
hey are the deadliest creatures on Earth. More than a million people a year die because of them. They are …. mosquitoes! Mostly, I think of a mosquito as that nasty little whining noise keeping me wide awake and slapping myself in the night, or the source of wildly itching red welts I try so hard not to scratch every summer. In these parts, mosquito bites usually are more of an irritant than a serious threat. Most deaths caused by mosquito-borne diseases occur in Africa (where malaria is rampant), the Caribbean, Latin America and parts of Asia. However, because of our unusually wet spring, health care practitioners are preparing this summer for more
West Nile virus, dengue fever and a new illness to Texas – chikungunya (chik-UN-gun-ye) virus. Dr. Gregory Anstead, a specialist in infectious diseases at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio who once lectured on “Death Delivered on Gossamer Wings,” is also sounding a cautionary note. “I think we do have to be concerned, especially with all the spring rain,” he said. “In Dallas, where the worst outbreak of West Nile in the United States occurred in 2012, there were very similar conditions – a very rainy spring and a hot summer that increases mosquito replication.” He added: “Chikungunya is interesting. We’ve only seen a few cases in Texas, mostly travelers returning from the Caribbean, but it’s incredible how quickly it has spread in some places. Basically, it was unknown in the Americas until December 2013. The first cases were in … the Caribbean, and in eight months it went from one to 350,000 cases in the Americas. Now it’s half a million.” Should we expect the worst? Probably not. Most acquiring West Nile or even dengue fever experience zero symptoms to mild ones. Same with chikungunya. Seventy percent of those infected will be symptom-free in a week. Horses
are particularly susceptible to West Nile, but there’s an effective vaccine for them (though not for humans). There are no vaccines – or curative medical treatments – for dengue fever or chikungunya. Even minor cases can keep you down for a week, and seriously threaten older and very young folks, and those with kidney disease, diabetes or weak immune systems. The best prevention is not to get bitten. Both Bexar County and the city of San Antonio, through the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, have spraying programs to control mosquitoes, but only in public areas. Olmos Park, Terrell Hills, Alamo Heights, Windcrest and most cities have their own spraying procedures or contracts. However, mosquitoes still thrive on some privately owned land, and in any backyard with standing water or pools without chlorination. Dr. Anil Mangla, the chief epidemiologist with Metro Health, has some practical recommendations for protecting yourself this summer. “Number one, use insect repellent. Look for products that say (Environmental Protection Agency)approved on the label, with ingredients such as DEET which, used in moderation
… is generally quite safe. There’s also citronella, and products with oil of lemon or eucalyptus are showing very good results,” the epidemiologist said. Sawyer Picaridin Insect Repellent with black-pepper extracts and Repel with oil of lemon eucalyptus topped a recent Consumer Reports list of mosquito repellents. “Number two,” Mangla said, “try to wear long-sleeved, loose shirts and pants outdoors, and three, don’t let standing water accumulate around your home.” Since mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, be especially careful then. Perspiration, dark clothing, movement, larger bodies and pregnant women attract mosquitoes. Unfortunately, according to recent genetic research, some folks are just born mosquito magnets. If you do get bitten, here’s what to watch for beyond the darned itch. Fever, headache and joint pain usually appear three to seven days after a bite. It might just be flu, but if you’ve been bitten, check with a doctor. A simple blood test for mosquitoborne diseases can set your mind at ease. Don’t let fretting about mosquitoes curtail your summer fun. Follow these tips and be ready to swat the little buggers! Give Yerkes a buzz at syerkes@ salocallowdown.com.

‘Cop-Stop’ provision makes a lot of sense

hank goodness cooler heads prevailed in the state Legislature during passage of a bill allowing licensed Texans to carry guns in plain view, with lawmakers opting to keep the “cop-stop” provision. During a late-night session just days before the final gavel fell, after much debate over the bill, legislators decided to keep language that permitted police to check for a license when they see someone openly carrying a gun. Law-enforcement organizations vociferously objected to dropping the provision. On the other hand, some — but not all — in the gun lobby argued that representatives of the government shouldn’t question Texans when they are acting legally. Some advocates even suggested they wanted the measure excised to prevent police from conducting racial profiling.
While the Second Amendment is very clear Americans have a constitutional right to own guns, it is imperative, in the interest of public safety, that officers be given the legal leeway to question anyone openly toting a firearm. It is true dozens of other states have had open carry for some time, and of those, many don’t require a permit or a license. In addition, statistics show that gun owners licensed or allowed to carry a weapon in public pose very little risk to safety. In some cases, they may even deter crime. Yet, no one seems to object if an officer asks for a driver’s license and proof of insurance. The same expectation should exist for someone carrying a gun in open sight, provided there is adequate reason to stop him or her. The bill allows those who already have concealed-carrying licenses to display a weapon in a hip or shoulder holster in the open. Applicants have to be 21, pass a background check and undergo training. We support the right of Texans to own and carry weapons, but we also support the right of people in public to enjoy a feeling of safety. -The Local Community News editorial board includes Harry Lees, Gregg Rosenfield and Thomas Edwards.

DISTRICT 9 COUNCILMAN Joe Krier on June 3 launched the first of his “Joe in the District” series of biweekly meetings, when city staffers visit various district sites to learn more about – and ways to resolve – issues faced by constituents. Krier invited Transportation & Capital Improvements employees for the inaugural meeting. Together they visited a Greater Harmony Hills resident whose fence line, which bordered a creek, was damaged after eroding concrete pieces floated upstream during a recent flood. Krier’s office said TCI’s storm-water operations team planned to address removal of the broken concrete sections from the creek within two weeks, and pledged work to shore and restore banks on both sides of the creek near the residence by August. THE DISTRICT 9 CITY COUNCIL OFFICE is continuing a Community Survey program soliciting input from homeowner associations, neighborhood groups and subdivisions. Councilman Joe Krier will then present the results to residents at a town-hall meeting or gathering. “Our Community Survey not only helps bring your community’s pressing issues to my attention, but to the attention of your neighbors as well,” Krier said in a release. “The Happy Handyman” Written by his daughter, Trudy Lesage
I just received this email about products that a customer bought at the at the last Home and Garden Show we did in San Antonio. It was mail like this that Dad loved and the reason he would search for products to use around the house to save you money. With the readers permission I am sharing it with you. Hi Trudy, I met you at the Home Show in San Antonio in September. I needed some help with my wooden front door that was looking old and faded. Your team hooked me up with Restore A Finish and Sun Shield for the door and All Gleam for the handle set. I went on through the show happy with my purchases. At the show was another door restoring company that I talked to. They said from my description of my door that it needed more work that your items could fix. I made an appointment for them to come and look at my door. Of course after they looked at my door the figure that I was told from the show doubled and I was told the door was in such bad shape that they would have to remove the door and take it away for a day to repair. They could not quote me a price and their manager would have to call me back. Well the company did not ever call back. After a month of waiting I decided to give your products a try. I am so pleased I did. The Restore A Finish is amazing and I am so happy with the way my door looks. You saved me several hundred dollars with the products you recommended. Thanks again for your help. And that’s why the article is written. If you ever need help with a project, please call me at the store in San Antonio or email me at happyhandyman2@yahoo.com . Now to the email..... Question: My neighbor just had a huge leak at his house from a water heater. He had no idea until the carpet was wet and the sheetrock was ruin. I have a water heater in my attic also and I do not want that to happen to me. I know you talk about a alarm....is it for this? Answer: Yes it is and it’s called a Leak Alert. It retails for under $15 and can save you thousands. You can put them under the water heater, the toilet, and the sinks. The minute that the Leak Alert gets wet, it will sound the alarm and you can catch that drip before it is a gusher! For more tips & offers go to:

After an absence of several years, mining operations are resuming at Beckmann Quarry west of Northwest Military Highway. Both San Antonio and Shavano Park residents have expressed concerns to local officials, but representatives of Martin Marietta — the owner of the quarry — have pledged to decrease blasting and volume levels that could affect nearby homes and apartments such as these. Most won’t even notice operations, quarry official promises
5/15/15 10:35 AM
More than a decade ago, mining in the area prompted a rash of complaints. Residents blamed blasting for cracks in their homes’ foundations, walls, windows and pools. Municipal officials say they want to avoid a repeat of those days. The quarry, which straddles Northwest Military Highway, is north of Loop 1604 and close to Camp Bullis and the Rogers Ranch and Presidio neighborhoods. Shavano Park is just south of the site, on the other side of 1604. “A number of years ago, they were blasting using older techniques and apparently there were a lot of complaints from residents,” said Shavano Park City Manager Bill Hill. “The blasts are now on a lower level than previous and advances in technology have definitely assisted in mitigating effects.” Quarry officials said that improvements
in mining technology mean residents will not be inconvenienced. Operations moved from the east side of the quarry to the west side and resumed in June. “We would never, ever conduct blasting operations in a way that would affect people’s structures, and we can guarantee that with science,” said Chance Allen, a spokesman for Martin Marietta. “We may be more noticeable or we may not. Most people will not even notice we’ve moved or changed.” The company is able to reduce its mining operations due to a new mining facility in Medina County. “We’re going to be reducing our overall volume significantly out of that operation,” Allen added. “The total number of blasting events will decrease by about half.” Hill said he is keeping a wary eye trained on the quarry, but meetings with the company so far have been productive. “Although it’s not ideal that quarry operations are ongoing, my discussions and investigations in dealing with Martin Marietta has convinced me that their operations are in the allowable safety levels and, more importantly, that Martin Marietta, and Beckmann Quarry specifically, have committed to us that as they continue these operations they will partner with the nearby communities to mitigate any effects as much as possible,” Hill said. Martin Marietta representatives are reaching out to Shavano Park residents to assure them mining operations will not affect the community, he added. A committee of neighbors, city staff and

SALOCALLOWDOWN.COM BECKMANN continues from pg. 10 homeowners association representatives has had multiple meetings with Martin Marietta officials, said Hill, who is a part of the committee. Martin Marietta will be giving monthly seismic reports to the committee and city leaders as well, he added. “Beckmann Quarry has taken a tremendous number of steps to reduce the effects of any blasting and they have shown a real commitment to communicating with citizens,” Hill said. San Antonio District 9 Councilman Joe Krier also announced in an online newsletter that his office is monitoring the situation. He also has met with company officials and toured the facility, but acknowledged that residents have worries. “One of the continuing problems residents contact me about is the blasting from the Beckmann Quarry owned by Martin Marietta,” he said. “I am a big proponent of being a good neighbor, so I visited the Beckmann Quarry to experience a blast firsthand. I learned about the rigorous regulations Martin Marietta and quarries like them must follow in order to blast.” The councilman said, “It certainly
appears that Martin Marietta is doing everything by the books and following what best practices dictate. For example, the largest blast/noise recorded was only 0.2 percent of what is needed to affect the structure of nearby homes, and that noise was similar to a loud clap of thunder.” According to Krier, “Martin Marietta stated to me, as they have with many residents, that they are committed to being a good neighbor and are willing to work closely with concerned residents.” Beckmann Quarry has been in operation since the early 1930s, with the most recent operations east of Military. Mining operations on the west side of the highway had been conducted prior to 2001, though at the time the quarry was not owned by Martin Marietta. “The Beckmann Quarry is a very large quarry that has been around for decades,” Allen said. “We’ve known that we’re going to be moving back to the west side of Northwest Military and we’ve mined there in the past.” Materials produced from the quarry are used for ready-mix and concrete for construction projects in South Texas and Houston. ome 18 months after the hitand-run death of a student walking to her NEISD campus, District 9 Councilman Joe Krier and education officials say safety in school zones continues to improve.
“There’s nothing worse in my life than having seen a funeral for a 9-year- old girl,” Krier recently said, recalling the demise of Tatyana Babineaux Jan. 15, 2014, as the fourth-grader walked to Larkspur Elementary School in the North East Independent School District. The case inspired him and other local leaders to push for more pedestrian safety at schools citywide, he added. “We ought to make every school zone safe as we can,” Krier said. Since Tatyana’s death, at Krier’s request, San Antonio has inventoried public school

zones and the safety devices they use. The City Council has made mid-fiscal year 2015 budget adjustments, allowing for some improvements to be immediately put in place. The city counted more than 1,000 San Antonio school zones; 513 had flashing beacons while another 530 were static. Only 400 zones had crosswalks, which are striped annually. The northernmost council districts with growing populations and newer campuses — Districts 8, 9 and 10 – account for 16 percent of the city’s school zones. Combined, 10 percent of those school zones in Districts 8-10 have flashing beacons. According to city figures, a majority of pedestrian/vehicular accidents recorded from January 2013 to October 2014 happened inside Loop 410, where most of the fatal crashes occurred in the same timeframe. San Antonio now has a policy where a new public school must, at its own expense, place a flashing beacon in the school zone, said Mike Frisbie, the city’s Transportation & Capital Improvements director. For older schools, the city could split the cost of installing a flashing beacon with the respective school district. Frisbie said the city is making the same offer to a growing number of private and charter schools, too.

Additionally, traditional safety measures — such as crosswalk guards — still exist. According to Frisbie, in the last year or two the city upgraded 147 flashing beacons and 2,515 signs to current standards, and installed nearly 8 miles of new sidewalks. Within the $1 million midyear FY 2015 budget adjustments is $300,000 to upgrade nine existing school zones from static to flashing beacons, including Stahl Elementary School. Additionally, the city received $500,000 in Community Development Block Grants, and Highway Safety Improvements Program funds, enhancing 13 other school zones, mainly inside Loop 410. Other Northside and North East independent school district campuses are doing what they can with the improvements they have received. Thomas Buente, principal of Howsman Elementary School, said children learning how to safely cross Vance Jackson Road is a key. “A traffic study has been requested to see if the student crossing on Vance Jackson will qualify for pedestrian crossing lights — the ‘HAWK system’,” Buente said, referring to a High-Intensity Activated crossWalK (HAWK) beacon. For now, San Antonio police help provide a Mama Patrol crosswalk guard on Vance Jackson, “and appropriate signage is in place,” Buente added. Erin Deason, Jackson Middle School’s principal, said that campus is located between two crosswalks along Vance Jackson. “Many people, more often than not, seem to ignore the 20 mph flashing lights in the morning and the afternoon. It is a very busy street and people go down it fast at all times,” Deason said. Jackson currently has no crossing guard at either crosswalk. A NEISD police officer is on site primarily in the afternoon helping to maintain the flow of picking up students in the parking lot. Jerry Woods, Clark High School principal, said parents and other community members have not approached him about student pedestrian safety. But he does believe it is a topic to be addressed. “The traffic on De Zavala Road continues to increase and we have hundreds of students who walk to and from school and walk off campus for lunch,” he said. “The school zones are well defined and enforced. The issue, in my opinion, lies in the fact that traffic continues to increase in correlation with the addition of housing and business developments,” he added. NEISD Police Chief Wallace McCampbell said the city is dedicated to ensuring all school zones are clearly marked and functioning properly.

“They also want to make sure that the school-zone lights are visible and the best type of beacons are used, and to restripe the crosswalks so that they stand out and are clearly marked,” he added. The Larkspur pupil’s death will always remind Krier more can be done to protect schoolchildren, he said. Tatyana was crossing Braesview Street that morning while walking to the school north of Castle Hills when a vehicle struck her. The driver drove away, but police detained a man a few days later. On June 17, Isidro Espinosa-Solis was found guilty in the 175th state District Court on a charge of failure to stop and render aid, and handed a 20year sentence, according to reports. At a June 3 council session, Krier summarized his feelings about the girl’s death and a need to develop a long-term plan to make the entire area around any school – public, private or charter – safer for all. “Tatyana was walking outside of a safe school zone,” said Frisbie, referring to the child not utilizing a crosswalk or intersection, “but even so, this raised awareness and Councilman Krier challenged us to find ways to improve safety.” Though the school year has ended, tragedy
JULY 13 - AUG. 10, 2015 struck again on the far North Side June 22 when a 12-year-old girl was injured by a pickup in a crosswalk on Evans Road near Encino Rio, close to Tejeda Middle School. Witnesses said the girl wore headphones and was looking at her phone. In Tatyana’s case, she was talking on a cellphone to her mother; Espinosa-Solis later testified he was speeding and distracted by texting while driving that morning. Frisbie explained that in past years, most schools were smaller and designed to be “in the heart of the neighborhood,” making it easier to control traffic flow during drop-off and pickup times. However in older neighborhoods and campuses, school zones often lack a flashing beacon, which helps coordinate traffic at crucial times, Frisbie said. He also noted in recent years, newer schools are typically built bigger and closer to major roads. Deputy City Manager Peter Zanoni said the city strives to maintain communication with local public school district leaders, as well as private, charter and even home- school groups to determine places needing improved pedestrian safety. On April 30, Krier met with NEISD Superintendent Brian Gottardy and 25 area school principals to hear a presentation from Terry Bellamy, the city’s assistant director of Transportation & Capital Improvements.

ocated on the Barshop Jewish Community Center’s upper level, in stark contrast to campers’ shouts, townspeople’s kibitzing and athletes’ trash-talk, is a solemn and introspective space — the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio.
Though the museum is 15 years old and has a new director, JCC officials say it remains relatively unknown — a situation they would like to see rectified. “We are interested in everyone coming in and learning about it,” said Judy Lackritz, who became the museum’s director in April. Lackritz, who had been a docent for years, also is director of community relations for the Jewish Federation of San Antonio. “When people come they say, ‘We
didn’t even know you were here,’” said Matthew Faulkner, the museum’s special programs manager. The displays offer testament to the systematic annihilation of European Jews by Nazi Germany, and its collaborators, in the 1930s and ’40s. Housed inside are numerous artifacts including visas, Jewish-identity cards, ghetto armbands and a canister containing a killing agent used in World War II gas chambers, plus local escapees’, survivors’ and liberators’ personal items and stories. Members of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio describe the memorial as a hidden gem. The exhibit chiefly encompasses two intimate adjacent rooms — one encircles panels depicting the slaughter of 6 million Jews while the other contains a mostly photo-filled wall concerning local Holocaust survivors and U.S. soldiers who liberated the Nazi death camps. When the JCC moved to its present site, 12500 N.W. Military Highway, in 1999, a permanent area was provided for its Holocaust documents and relics, which had been stored in trunks. “When this building was developed and designed, one of the services that was incorporated into its design was a

The annual salary for physical therapists in San Antonio ranges from just over $64,000 to nearly $87,000, according to Salary.com. Mary Lee “Bitsy” Pratt has spent 39 years working as a physical therapist in San Antonio. She founded Pyramid Plaza Physical Therapy in 1991, and her office is at 6391 De Zavala Road, Suite 100. “I love my work,” she said. “My job is to keep people moving. When they have movement difficulties they are less likely to be social, to be active in their community, to get out of the house, to do things.” Pratt, like many physical therapists, has a special interest in helping seniors maintain their balance and avoid falls. To treat people for disabilities with pain or other issues requires a physician’s referral. She and others sharing her line of work in Texas are requesting legislation to permit

physical therapists. Absent a traumatic injury, it’s often difficult to find the cause of someone’s pain. I’m a nuts-and-bolts kind of guy and this is a perfect profession for me. It’s like being a detective.” Trueman said he has learned over the years, “Some things we can fix and some things we can’t fix.” Like Pratt, he hopes to see the state law changed to permit self-referral to physical therapists. “Not needing a physician’s referral would save patients time and money,” he said. Dr. Diana Schonhoff decided to become a physical therapist after her mom told her a story about seeing one teach a young girl to walk. “I love the people, the varying aspects of what I do as a physical therapist, everything,” Schonhoff said. “As a physical therapist, you can work from newborns to geriatrics. It is the most fascinating field and I can’t imagine doing anything else.” Schonhoff is at Garden Ridge Physical Therapy & Wellness, 18945 FM 2252. “I have patients who walk into our clinic all hunched over and they walk out tall and proud. It is such an exciting career,” she added. To find a physical therapist, visit www.physicaltherapists.com or ask your primary-care physician.

VACCINATIONS continues from pg. 20 advertising campaigns remind folks to get flu shots, and recently there’s been a lot of talk about human papillomavirus, or HPV, vaccine for adolescents, as TV commercials tout adult vaccinations preventing pneumonia and shingles. In Texas, a number of shots are required before schoolchildren may enroll, and for years thereafter. For a list, visit www.cdc.gov. “We didn’t get a lot of these vaccines back when we were kids. Advances in research have created a lot of progress, but a lot of people ask me why they need them,” said Dr. Shahed Izaddoost of the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Physician Group. “Some people say they worry about side effects, so they might not want their child to get vaccinated,” Izaddoost added. “As doctors, we worry if your child does not get vaccinated, because these diseases can be very serious.” Meningococcal vaccine, pneumococcal vaccine, MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine, polio vaccine, Tdap for diphtheria and pertussis – all are part of the arsenal doctors use to help prevent diseases, which can spread quickly in children. recommended vaccinations, and the federally funded Vaccines for Children program aids underinsured kids. The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District also provides many free or low-cost vaccinations through the Immunization Clinic; call 207-8894. “Many illnesses can be prevented by vaccination,” said Dr. Anil Mangla, chief epidemiologist at Metro Health. Dr. Patricia Mackin, a primary-care physician with Baptist Health System, said while most ads for shingles vaccine focus on the painful rash, more serious effects are possible. The pain, caused when nerves affected by childhood chicken pox are reactivated, can return in some people, and if the rash gets into a person’s eyes, blindness can result. Which brings up an important fact about vaccines, Mackin said. “In order for any vaccine to be approved and recommended by the (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), it has to prevent or decrease the risk of a condition that can kill or significantly disable a person, and something that can cause blindness, even if that is not the common outcome, would be disabling,” Mackin said. “Shingles is a lot more common than most people think.”

ASTLE HILLS — A chronic medical condition couldn’t stop a Castle Hills First Baptist School senior from her promise to win a state athletic championship and bring yet another first-place sports award to the private academy.

said. “I had been working for that since freshman year, actually even starting in the fifth grade. I knew that was my goal and that’s what I wanted to do.” Personal challenges never slowed her down, either, friends and relatives said. The teen was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was 8. “When I first got diagnosed, I had to learn to do things differently,” the athlete said. “I never saw it as a hindrance or as something that was tearing me down. I always saw it as a gift because it made me work harder.
Dallas O’Connell, 18, who heads this fall to the University of Texas at San Antonio on a partial athletic scholarship, claimed the state championship crown in discus at the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools’ 2A State Track and Field Championships May 9 at Baylor University. The recent Castle Hills grad also was named the TAPPS 2A Female Athlete of the Year. “A lot of hard work paid off,” O’Connell

I really thank God for it. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without that adversity.” She also had a support system of relatives, friends and educators who helped her, she added. “If you fail, don’t stay down,” O’Connell said. “Everyone goes through bad days, but just keep going and never stop. One thing that really pushed me to be a champion was the people around me.” Castle Hills FBS has earned other athletic accolades recently. In December, the football program claimed a victory that marked back-to-back state championships after only five full seasons for the six-man team. O’Connell is an accomplished multi-sport athlete, earning varsity letters in track and field, volleyball, cross country, cheerleading, swimming, tennis and basketball. At this year’s state meet, O’Connell also won a silver medal with her teammates in the 4x200 meter relay and a bronze in the 4x100 relay. Through all her athletic experience, O’Connell says she was drawn to the discus the most. She progressed steadily in the sport during her high school years, placing fifth at state as a freshman, third as a sophomore, and second as a junior. Her coaches said O’Connell set the bar pretty high for herself, training on her own time in addition to scheduled practices.
“Dallas made a goal her freshman year that she would be a state champion,” said Matthew Garza, O’Connell’s track and field coach. “We worked tirelessly and endlessly as much as we could for four years. The great part is that she got it. It starts with a mindset of wanting to achieve a goal.” Norma Robinson, who is O’Connell’s mother and a coach at the school, said the teen’s achievement — “her story and her being able to go college and be a studentathlete while having overcome epilepsy” — sets an example for others to follow. Father Terry O’Connell said his daughter has learned valuable lessons that will last a lifetime. “The teamwork she has learned through sports will help her in life,” he said. “She is not only my daughter, but a beautiful person with a huge heart and great spirit. I know she will be successful at any career she chooses because she has the drive and desire to make anything happen she sets her mind to.” School Superintendent Michael Pinkston said Dallas O’Connell has created a lasting legacy. “Dallas’ performance in the athletic arena has been a storied and great set of accomplishments, but she will also be remembered here on this campus because of her great leadership presence,” he said.

JCC continues from pg. 15 Holocaust museum,” said Saul F. Levenshus, JCC president/CEO, “to be able to provide education on this important subject for not just the Jewish community, but specifically for the non-Jewish community, to educate school-age children.” According to Lackritz, 12,000 to 18,000 schoolchildren visit annually, including pupils from Seguin, McAllen, Laredo, Eagle Pass and Del Rio, as well as nearby St. George Episcopal School on West Avenue in Castle Hills. Following a museum tour this spring, a sixth-grade class from St. George was moved to pen letters addressing their eye-opening field trip. “I do believe that sometimes the worst of things happen to the best of people,” wrote one student. Another confessed, “To be honest, the whole time I was about to cry.” A third noted, “I think it is good that we know what happened in the Holocaust.” During her long association with the memorial, Lackritz has seen many visitor reactions, with one encounter standing out. “The sun was coming through the windows and there was a woman in the museum standing by herself. She had beautiful, curly, long, gray hair. She had on boots and she was staring at the picture of

European Jew who outlived the war, but endured decades-long emotional wounds. “A survivor I was friends with,” said Lackritz, “kept a packed suitcase in the trunk of her car here in San Antonio, in case she needed to flee.” While not many survivors initially ventured here, a few settled in the Alamo City. According to Faulkner, presently there are seven, with four sometimes speaking during museum tours. Faulkner said when asked why they made the Lone Star State home, they quipped, “We came to Texas because we wanted to see cowboys.” Levenshus said, “We can’t afford to ever forget and we have to make sure that the message gets out there. There’s still, today, too many people who don’t believe the Holocaust ever happened.” “Holocaust denial is going on,” Lackritz said, “but there is some evidence that when dealing with people who are skinheads or people who are against the (existence of the) Holocaust, one of the things that makes them understand is to take them through a museum like this. They just don’t have all the right information.” The director remains optimistic about the museum’s message. “It will be our project to work together to make us understand each other, respect each other’s values,” Lackritz

said. “San Antonio has a good record of interfaith and intergroup relations.” However, she said more work can be done to increase understanding. “We hope to continue to make people aware that we exist in the community, to continue the education program, and to look to the future to figure how we can keep the program alive and strong after the survivors are no longer here to tell their stories. “I hope that families will also talk to each other about the dangers of hatred and prejudice, said Lackritz, adding, “I hope they come visit the museum as part of that process.” From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 3 and 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 4, the museum will host workshops for educators on the Holocaust called “Echoes and Reflections.” The purpose is to stimulate engagement, critical thinking and personal understanding among students. urePoint Self Storage, which recently opened at 13326 N.W. Military Highway, bills itself as a company offering high-end, climate-controlled, clean and secure storage units.
The company started in 2000 with Robert Loeb and Brian Cisarik, then Jeff Bailey joined a few years later. The business rebranded its image in 2014 after owning multiple complexes named after geographic locations such as Castle Hills Self Storage, Austin Highway Self Storage and 3009 Self Storage. “We want to be here to help
people,” Cisarik said. SurePoint Self Storage continues to be successful because the right people are hired and it has the newest features in the industry, he added. “We want people coming because somebody they know has had a very good experience,” said Cisarik, who has been in the self-storage business for 20 years. The company has two locations in San Antonio, two in Schertz and more coming to Cypress, Richmond and Houston. The staff members at the three-story Northwest Military location offer moving tips, moving supplies and a storage calculator for customers to estimate how much space they will need. New lounge promises handcrafted cocktails, neighborhood feel by SANA HARHARA
O
ne of the newest additions to the North Side cocktail scene is The Hidden Dragon Lounge at 14355 Blanco Road. With what’s billed as 12 unique cocktail flavors and ingredients listed on the menu, Hidden Dragon also offers great pricing, according to the staff. Cocktails range from $6-$9. The bar is the latest offering from entrepreneurs Adrian Martinez (China Garden, Smoke the Restaurant) and bartender Matt Dulaney (Blue Box, Bohanan’s Bar, Esquire Tavern) to promote handcrafted cocktails in a bar with a neighborhood feel.
Dulaney, the beverage manager at Hidden Dragon, said he was in for a treat when he started working in April after spending so much time on the downtown bar scene. “This bar offers a different experience for me solely based on our location. It is interesting how diverse this town can be over five miles,” Dulaney said. “At Esquire, Bohanan’s and Blue Box I really was just focused on bartending. We would create cocktails, and work as a team to create a successful bar.” Hidden Dragon offers a little something for every age group. Dulaney’s greatest pride is the drink menu, he said. “It’s more simplistic than most, because we wanted to focus on precise execution over intense ingredients,” he said, adding
the cocktails require care and time. “Our staff consists of people who are enthusiastic about cocktails,” he said. “We enjoy making quality drinks while educating people on the reasons we do the things we do.” A lot of prep work is involved, which means the juices are fresh and the crew makes all the syrups in-house. “Precision is key here,” Dulaney said, adding the real fun starts when the guests arrive. Hours are 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily.
