eing involved in local government doesn’t mean you have to run for office or apply for a City Hall job. There are other ways to serve, including answering a call from your city, county or state to volunteer for a seat on a board, a committee or a commission responsible for government accountability. Taking an active role by volunteering epitomizes true democracy and the spirt of citizen-led government. Residents who fill these important positions are acting as the eyes and ears of their community by assuming a leadership role and ensuring government flows smoothly. These unelected positions include seats on planning and zoning commissions, crime control districts, historical districts, animal control, civil service commissions, ethics review boards, arts districts, bond committees, water advisory committees and more. Local government has the greatest impact on our daily lives — trash pickup, road maintenance, police and fire protection and so on. But government supervisors and city councils can’t do it all, which is why it is so vital for residents to help steer their communities toward excellence. In most cases, serving in these positions only takes a few hours each month. Because the new budget cycle for most cities starts Oct. 1, appointments to boards, committees and commissions are being made now. Service above self is a noble cause. Those with a servant’s heart should step forward and aid their community.

Lone Star Rail: the right track? by SUSAN YERKES
H
ave you driven Interstate 35 to Austin recently? It’s not a pleasant trip. From the traffic jam getting out of San Antonio to the traffic jam that usually starts around Kyle and continues into Austin, the 75-mile drive can take three to four hours – and it’s getting worse. San Antonio and Austin are among the five fastest-growing cities in the country, and the towns along the I-35 corridor are growing, too. With more people come more cars, and more congestion. That’s bad not only in terms of travel time and costs, but in terms of air quality.
Among Texas cities, San Antonio recently ranked second only to Dallas-Fort Worth for high ozone readings. It’s near the tipping point into “nonattainment” under Environmental Protection Agency clean-air standards. If the trend isn’t reversed, folks may face annual vehicleemissions tests, more EPA regulations on some businesses and, ironically, less federal money for highway construction. There’s no quick fix. Soon, however, San Antonio leaders will decide whether to invest in one potential solution – Lone Star Rail. Lone Star is a proposed regional commuter-rail line to connect key cities along the booming I-35 corridor, from Georgetown in the north to San Antonio in the south. Running along existing Union Pacific Corp. tracks, up to 32 commuter trains would travel the line daily, with daytime and evening services. The trip from downtown Austin to downtown San Antonio would take about 75 minutes, according to current projections. Lone Star’s website notes that fares in similar commuter rail districts run from $3 to $13 for a oneway trip, depending on how far you go. There are 16 planned stations along the way so far. San Antonio-area stops are planned at Schertz, Loop 1604, the San Antonio International Airport,
downtown, Port San Antonio and Texas A&M University-San Antonio at the end of the line. With 17 colleges and universities near the route, Lone Star would be a big plus for some 250,000 San Antonio higher-education students. This has been planned for some years. Back in 1997, the Legislature approved a rail district from Bexar County to Travis County. Since then, the Lone Star Rail District has been gathering funds. San Antonio, Georgetown, San Marcos, Williamson County, Hays County, the cities of Schertz and New Braunfels and several metro-planning groups have joined the rail district. The project got a big boost when Union Pacific agreed to consider building a new, upgraded freight-rail line on San Antonio’s outskirts. That would free up their current line – the one that goes through the heart of San Antonio, currently causing more traffic tie-ups with the long, lumbering freight trains — for Lone Star’s planned commuter service. There is, of course, a price tag. The rail district already has state and federal funds, but San Antonio, VIA Metropolitan Transit and Bexar County will be responsible for the cost of maintenance and stations in our area. Austin and San Marcos have already committed their share, and New Braunfels is close to an agreement.
San Antonio’s City Council is allocating funds for Lone Star Rail in the new city budget, which has to be in place by Oct. 1. For the next three years or so the commitment is relatively small – about $500,000 a year, according to rail interim Executive Director Ross Milloy. Then it would “stair-step” up as the railroad gathered steam. The challenge now is to figure out how the city will fund its part, whether it’s from tax-increment zones around the new stations, general revenue or other sources. It seems telling that District 9 Councilman Joe Krier, the former 20year president and CEO of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, has been a champion of Lone Star Rail. Krier opposed the downtown streetcar project. “People in my district-neighborhood meetings were firmly against streetcar, but they are firmly in favor of Lone Star Rail,” Krier said. “It’s not streetcar, it’s not light rail, and I’m passionate about the potential economic growth, the reduction in traffic jams and the reduction in pollution.” I love the idea of hopping a Wi-Fi-equipped commuter train to Austin and points between. Help, not jail, for truant kids
A
new state truancy law based on a San Antonio system goes into effect in September, decriminalizing the process and instead trying to address the root causes of skipping school. The measure is a step in the right direction, recognizing that not every social ill can be corrected simply by declaring something illegal. A closer examination of most truancy violations shows that absenteeism arises from hardship, often in low-income families hit by economic or health issues. Criminalizing truancy only creates more obstacles for struggling students, an issue recognized by the San Antonio model. The old system didn’t work, even with the prospect of facing fines up to $500 and going to jail. According to state figures, in 2014
nearly 100,000 Class C failure-to-attendschool misdemeanors were filed. The previous law also seems draconian. Kids no older than 12 could face a court appearance for three unexcused absences in four weeks. The statute called for campuses to file misdemeanor charges against pupils who logged more than 10 unexcused absences in six months. Students with unpaid fines could be hauled off to jail when they reached 17, and parents also could face penalties. The new law heralds a better approach to address student absences. The statute replaces criminal prosecutions for truancy with civil hearings. In addition, before educators file charges, school districts are called to help identify and alleviate the underlying causes of truancy, which can include homelessness, chronic illness or other needs. School districts still have the option of sending students with 10 unexcused absences over six months to civil court, where a judge can assess treatment and community service. Truancy laws shouldn’t penalize kids who want to go to school but can’t when confronted by challenges in life or at home. -The Local Community News editorial board includes Harry Lees, Gregg Rosenfield and Thomas Edwards.

The rate remains at nearly $1.38 per $100 valuation, officials said. The district’s enrollment is expected to reach a record 105,000 students in just a few weeks, educators said; NISD also opened its 75th elementary school, Boldt, at the start of the academic year Aug. 24. ATHLETIC, CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY UPGRADES for Clark High School have been approved by trustees of the Northside Independent School District, according to a news release. IN SHAVANO PARK, A TRENCH DUG AROUND TREES AFFLICTED with oakwilt disease is proving successful in keeping the malady from spreading to other oaks, officials said. The city’s oakwilt fund paid for the trenching effort. In order to replenish the money, the
City Council recently approved a $35 fee for tree-trimming permits for both residents and professional tree contractors. The city has also created a new Tree Committee, and is seeking qualified volunteers. Call 493-3478 to learn more. IMPROVEMENTS TO RELIEVE TRAFFIC CONGESTION ON NORTHWEST MILITARY HIGHWAY using some federal funds have been outlined by the Shavano Park Planning and Zoning Commission, according to an online letter from City Manager Bill Hill. “Since 1999, (Northwest) Military Highway has seen a significant increase in vehicle, bike and pedestrian traffic,” Hill wrote. “Unfortunately, the future build-out of property north of (Loop) 1604 will result in even more traffic, which means increased traffic hazards.” The commission’s recommendations have to be approved by City Council, which can apply for a federally funded program in which costs are shared with the Texas Department of Transportation. The project could be submitted to TxDOT by Dec. 1, but it will be up to the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization to make the selection in May 2016. If that happens, officials said, work could start from 2019-22. Recommendations include a continuous center turn lane

CAPT. JOHNNY SIEMENS OF THE CASTLE HILLS POLICE DEPARTMENT is encouraging residents to participate in this year’s annual National Night Out, which will take place in communities across Texas on Oct. 6. NNO is intended to bring neighborhoods together to raise awareness of crime and drug prevention, to generate local support and participation for crime-fighting efforts and to strengthen neighborhood camaraderie and community partnerships with local law enforcement agencies, according to officials. Participating neighborhoods on NNO usually organize block parties with visits from police and fire department representatives, EMS workers and city leaders. “This is simply a great time to get to know or re-introduce one’s self to one’s neighbors,” Siemens said. “During the event, police vehicles and fire trucks will stop by for kids and adults to look inside
a police cruiser or learn more about the fire apparatus. City Council members and city staff plan to attend block parties to visit the citizens they serve.” To register a block party and to schedule police and fire visits, call Maribel Mendoza at 342-2341 or mmendoza@cityofcastlehills.com.

Support pledged to seek justice in hate cases by EILEEN PACE

aith leaders say antiSemitic vandalism targeting a primarily Jewish neighborhood on the North Side has unified the community instead of dividing it, but some residents are asking, “What’s next?” “All the faith communities really came together and everybody has been very supportive. The question is … what’s next?” said Rabbi Yossi Marrus of Chabad Center for Jewish Life & Learning. “And that’s why it’s a cause for concern. That’s why everybody is stepping up security.” Residents in Oak Meadow just off Northwest Military Highway awoke Aug. 12 to find hate speech and racial epithets scrawled across about 30 structures and vehicles in the area surrounding Congregation Rodfei Sholom, an
Orthodox synagogue. A second incident was reported just five days later at nearby Congregation Agudas Achim. Police have launched probes into both cases and are seeking links between the incidents. A video of two men vandalizing a nearby business about the same time was released to CrimeStoppers; it may shed additional light on the case, investigators said. One person of interest has already been interviewed, officials said. Meanwhile, community leaders said help and well-wishes from the rest of San Antonio during one of the worst outbreaks of anti-Semitic sentiment in years has been heartening. “The quality and strength — and the quantity — of love and support that we have received gives us so much comfort at a time like this,” said Rodfei Sholom’s spiritual leader, Rabbi Aryeh Scheinberg. On the morning when the first graffiti was discovered, Scheinberg gathered community members to clean the offensive words and appeared on television, decrying the acts as a disheartening event. Public officials issued statements condemning the vandalism, and volunteers from across the city, including

VANDALISM continues from pg. 11 from other faiths, rallied to support the neighborhood. Signs soon went up on streets urging tolerance and acceptance, in addition to fliers from the FBI seeking more information on the hate crimes. “At the end of the day, I don’t think the Jewish community is so bent out of shape over it,” Marrus said. “The Jewish community has always been at the forefront of standing up for people’s rights and speaking out about injustice. And
the same has been true in this case.” The graffiti can be cleaned and washed away, Marrus said. The sentiment that led to the vandalism is more worrisome, the rabbi added. “I think it’s more the concern of what’s behind it,” Marrus said. “If there are feelings of resentment, hatred, bigotry, anti-Semitism or racism or whatever it might be, that’s a concern. That’s not a good thing.” Senior Rabbi Chaim Block of Chabad Center said he was on his way to Washington, D.C., when the first vandalism was reported.

The neighborhood president called him and said the presidents of five surrounding neighborhoods pledged to watch the area. “For the first time in 30 years in San Antonio, I felt vulnerable,” Block said. “This was not an attack where someone broke through locked gates and security systems. They didn’t get into the synagogue, they attacked the neighborhood.” But Block added the incident is not going to break the community’s spirit. “We’re not going to barricade ourselves behind fences,” he said. Winslow Swart, a board member of Congregation Rodfei Sholom, said the assistance offered by the surrounding community has shown the vandalism is not a true reflection of San Antonio. “What’s come out of this series of events and what I find really remarkable is it shines a spotlight on the character of our city and almost all the people in it,” Swart said. He added, “And in many ways, the response to this and the way we’re all thinking and talking about this, I think, has the potential to increasingly set a tone for the conversation that’s happening across our nation.” State Sen. José Menéndez contributed $1,000 toward a reward fund that grew to more than $11,000 within days. He called on the Texas Department of Public Safety
and the Texas Rangers to investigate. “This is not merely graffiti, this is an orchestrated effort to try to intimidate an entire community of people based on their religious beliefs and we cannot stand for it,” he said. “I have found that the diversity of San Antonio is what makes this a special place where people want to start up a business or raise a family.” Joe Krier, who represents City Council District 9, said, “Hateful acts such as this have no place in civil society.” His colleague, District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg, added, “I’m encouraged and grateful for the outpouring of support from area neighbors in response to this unfortunate crime. Those neighbors – some of whom stood on corners last week with signs that read ‘Stand Against Hate’ and ‘I Support My Neighbors’ – have proven that here in San Antonio, we are different.” Nirenberg represents the district where the vandalism occurred. Support has also been strong from the Christian community. Cornerstone Church Pastor John Hagee stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Scheinberg when the rabbi first talked to reporters. “In this city, Christians and Jews are united like no other city in the United States of America. An attack on the synagogue is an attack on every church in this city,” Hagee said.

lthough a culture battle over whether to change Lee High School’s name because it honors a Confederate war hero seems to be on the back burner for now, advocates and opponents say the issue is far from over. In August, the North East Independent School District heard arguments for and against removing the name after senior Kayla Wilson submitted a petition with 9,000 signatures urging trustees to drop “Robert E. Lee” from the school’s designation. Wilson, who is African American, said Lee’s name is a reminder of the Confederate States of America’s support of human enslavement during the war of secession, 1861-65. Proponents said the school’s name reflects American
history and does not represent hatred, but heritage and campus traditions. Trustees ultimately decided to table the issue. “At this time, the board is not considering a name change,” Aubrey Chancellor, an NEISD spokeswoman, recently said. Not everyone agrees with the decision. “I think the school should have never been named that in the first place, but since it was, I feel it is our responsibility to fix the mistake that happened in 1958,” Wilson said. “We should not be celebrating someone who fought against his country and was willing to die to tear this country apart. I think there are better people we can name the school after.” Proponents of keeping the name, however, say the Civil War involved several complex political and social issues, not just slavery. They also argue that Lee — a Virginian who graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and fought for the U.S. Army in the Mexican-American War — deserves the recognition for his “honorable life” and service both before and after the War Between the States. “The Happy Handyman” Written by his daughter, Trudy Lesage
Back in May when we were at the National Hardware Show we came across a product called Bondic. At first glance I thought it was just "super glue" but I was wrong because it is so much more than that. It is a liquid plastic welder that stays flexible until you cure it with the UV light that comes with the tool. The reps at the show gave us a kit that I took back to the store and gave it to the employees to try it out. We do so many little repairs for our customers and I thought if we can use it - so can you. We used it on pin holes in paint cans, repairing electrical cords, putting tiny jewelry pieces back together, repairing eyeglasses and the list is still growing. The Bondic comes in this pencil shaped tool with the liquid weld on the inside and a little light on the other end. To use the Bondic, you follow four steps: 1. sand lightly (I mean lightly) 2. Fill with the Bondic liquid weld 3. Cure the weld with the light for 4 seconds 4. Then file, sand and or paint. Most of our repairs did not need painting or sanding and were just left but you can paint and then never see the place where you bonded and repaired. One of the most amazing things I saw the Bondic repair was the top of a broken car key fob where the keys are attached. Remember Bondic is not super glue, so one drop is not how you repair, you build up the Bondic and use the light to harden as you go along. They retail for under $25 and refills will be available. I know they would make great stocking stuffers, if you can remember where you put it come December. HA! Now to the email..... Question: I have been told I have hair line roots in my septic. I don't think that's a good thing. So what is it I can use to help prevent these? Answer: Use the Root Kill in the toilet. Root Kill comes in a 2 lb container and you put 1 lb in the toilet at night and flush then leave the toilet alone that night. Then repeat the process the next night. Root Kill is 99.9% Copper Sulfate and retails for under $20. Question: I have 3 outside faucets that are old and drip. I am going to replace them what do suggest I use? Answer: Use the quarter - turn faucets that have a ball valve and will not have a washer to wear out. And then instead of turning and turning to open and close it's just a quick quarter turn, much easier on the hands.

LEE continues from pg. 13 counter-petition to keep Lee’s name. “We started our petition for no name change to any NEISD schools because a name change, any school’s name change, is disruptive to the students, the district and school’s administration, and it is a frivolous waste of taxpayers’ money,” Craig said. “If one school’s name changes, they can all be changed and it can impact taxpayers negatively.” According to Craig, who is a Lee graduate, the school’s name has been recognized by the community for decades. “The history and traditions of a school matter to alumni, as does the support,” she said. “It destroys the community and alumni identity in the institutions and names given to them. The pride goes away because it changes the dynamics when names change. The spirit diminishes, as does the support. It matters. My class alone has given over $10,000 in donations for the school to use.” Wilson, however, said starting the petition to rename the school was the right thing to do because it raises awareness and provides a voice for others who find the name and symbolism of the school to be inappropriate. “When I started the petition, a lot of people said they wanted this change for a long time,” she said. Craig said those in opposition to dropping the name have gotten signatures from students, former students, residents, parents, grandparents, current and former teachers and administrators. “Our petition is about any school’s name change in NEISD,” she said. “No changes now or in the future to any schools. If it can happen to one, it can happen to your school next if the political winds decide to one day blow your direction to unfairly target your school.” Petitions aside, some believe the school’s name and mascot — the Volunteers, but often characterized by a caricature of a charging Johnny Reb with drawn sword — bring painful memories and emotions. “I feel that there should be a name change,” said Carolyn Wilson, Kayla Wilson’s grandmother. “They keep saying it’s about tradition and not bigotry, but it really is. When you’re African American and you walk around those symbols, you feel terrible in your soul. You don’t feel like it’s a part of you.” But many insist that Lee — both its name and mascot — do not advocate racism. “The school has been here for almost 58 years now,” said Lori Ayotte, a 1981 graduate of Lee who is of Hispanic descent. “I never thought of racism while going to school here. We all got along great and we still get along. We still have reunions and to this day we love each other still, regardless of race.”

SALOCALLOWDOWN.COM Izbrand said the city still has land to develop, including along Northwest Military. “There are some developers who have done some preliminary exploration, and I think access has a lot to do with that. There’s still room for growth,” Izbrand said. Although when it comes to existing retail space, “I think you would be challenged to find many empty storefronts in Castle Hills,” he added. The most prominent recent development was the consolidation of several scattered offices around San Antonio into one corporate headquarters for Pape-Dawson Engineers at 2000 N.W. Loop 410. Last summer, the company moved into the two-story building owned by D2410 LP, which is controlled by the Dawson family. Not only did Castle Hills gain a prominent corporate citizen, but the taxable value of the property increased from $6.2 million in 2014 to $13.6 million this year. According to Bexar Appraisal District records, more than $68,000 in ad valorem taxes on the property flowed to Castle Hills. No tax abatements were involved in the development. In addition, Pape-Dawson paid nearly $7,800 in taxes to Castle Hills

ASTLE HILLS — Two new corporate headquarters, an H-E-B remodel and more small businesses locating to the city have combined to create an economic development boom for the community.
A financial downturn in 2008 that mirrored a national slowdown hurt many small businesses in the city, including restaurants, retailers and service companies, but a slow rebuilding has occurred. The head of a key city development committee said even more development is on the way. “Castle Hills is uniquely located,” said Joe Izbrand, chairman of the Zoning Commission. That includes quick access to Loop 410 frontage, U.S. 281, Interstate 10 and several routes to Loop 1604, including Northwest Military Highway. Much of the city is only five to 10 minutes from the San Antonio International Airport.

on $1.55 million in personal property such as furniture and computers in its new offices, the tax records show. Next up is the Bank of San Antonio, which is moving its headquarters from the Forum Building near Interstate 10 and Loop 410 to take up residence next to PapeDawson. Construction is underway and the building is expected to open by mid-2017. The city of San Antonio now gets about $3,400 in property taxes on the personal property contained inside the bank headquarters at 8000 I-10 West. A similar amount could be going into Castle Hills coffers after the move in 2017. The Bank of San Antonio, the fourth largest locally based banking institution in the city, will have more than 100 people in the new, 57,000-square-foot building at 1900 N.W. 410 and add a significant taxable value to the property. The presence of a corporate headquarters also can add to the sales-tax revenue because of taxable purchases for the whole company. That’s because those taxes often are credited to the home city of the business. A remodeling of the H-E-B at 6000 West Ave. and the opening of new ventures, ranging from a weekend farmers market to a school for baristas, has also meant Castle Hills’ business profile is on an upswing.

Focus remains on enhancing curriculum guidelines by WILL WRIGHT
T
he Northside and North East independent school districts met state standards this past academic year, according to assessments released by the Texas Education Agency in August. Several individual campuses earned distinction designations from the TEA, which monitored academic performance at the state’s 8,646 public school campuses for the 2014-15 school year. However, districts are closely focused on conforming to and enhancing standards outlined in House Bill 5, passed by the Legislature and signed into law in 2013, officials said.
The law called for less reliance on state-mandated tests used for assessments, while also requiring public school districts to improve career-path readiness programs for students headed to college, as well as creating vocational programs for pupils who aren’t going to college. While proud of their districts’ TEA assessments, NISD and NEISD officials said their focus remains on enhancing career-path programs for students. “House Bill 5 is an exciting change for our students, their families and our school staff,” NISD Superintendent Brian Woods said. “Essentially the law allows a student to better focus on their areas of strength and earn a rigorous diploma regardless of their interests.” College-bound students seek endorsements, or clusters of advanced study, in several academic areas – such as arts/humanities, business/industry, multidisciplinary, public service, and science, technology, engineering and math — or STEM programs – to enhance their chances of pursuing college degrees. “In order to allow our students to maximize the courses they can take and the endorsements they can earn, we have

SALOCALLOWDOWN.COM STANDARDS continues from pg. 16 expanded programming at many of our high schools,” Woods said. “We have also added guidance staff and other resources so our students and their parents can be well informed in the choices they make.” TEA’s latest report cards for overall district and individual school performance were based on an indexed point system that assessed four categories: student achievement, student progress, closing performance gaps and postsecondary readiness. Also considered in the assessment were State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness test scores, student improvement in various subject areas – especially among minority and low-income students; and district advancement in creating postsecondary “career path” programs for college-bound and non-college-bound students. Preliminary assessments, issued Aug. 6, won’t be finalized until TEA reviews appeals from school districts in November. Ten school districts in LOCAL Community News’ coverage area passed, garnering “Met Standard” ratings for overall performance. Of the 296 schools in those districts, 273 received “Met Standard”
designations. Nineteen were not rated, with four NEISD elementary schools receiving a designation of “Improvement Required” for at least one year. However, each district graded well above state standards based on overall academic performance, student participation and graduation rates, and meeting federal benchmarks in relation to alternative assessments. Randolph Field ISD met all 37 of its requirements for a perfect mark. It was followed by NEISD and New Braunfels ISD (both 96 percent); Fort Sam Houston ISD (95 percent); Comal ISD (94 percent); Alamo Heights ISD (93 percent); Northside ISD (91 percent); Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD (90 percent); Judson ISD (88 percent) and Boerne ISD (84 percent). In addition, dozens of schools earned distinction designations in English Language Arts/reading; math; science; social studies; student progress; closing performance gaps; and postsecondary-readiness. High schools and middle schools were assessed on meeting seven standards; elementary schools were required to meet five benchmarks.

STANDARDS continues from pg. 17 Top performers included NEISD’s Northwood, Huebner and Roan Forest elementaries (five of five); and Northside’s Clark and Health Careers high schools (seven of seven), as well as Glass, Esparza, Linton and Brauchle elementaries (five of five). NEISD elementaries that received improvement-required designations are East Terrell Hills, Camelot, Montgomery and West Avenue. Last year, the district’s Olmos Elementary was the lone campus cited as needing improvement, but it was not included this year. “For the four campuses, it was a matter of missing the state’s target score by just one to three points,” said Pauline Dow, NEISD associate superintendent for curriculum and technology. “This may have been a difference of one or two students passing a test, but not scoring high enough to meet the advanced passing standard.” NEISD spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor said the district’s campuses are engaged in the Texas Accountability and Intervention System, which helps develop targeted improvement plans for students. NEISD has also created support teams that work with principals and campus instructional teams. In terms of HB 5 compliance, the

LEE continues from pg. 14 Another Class of ‘81 alumna, Roberta McKeown Smith, also insists that it’s not about racism. “My mother graduated from Lee in ’61,” she said. “My brother, sister and I graduated in the ’80s. There was never any racism at Lee back then. We were friends with everybody. We all got along and we were proud of our high school.” Mobi Warren, who lives in the school’s enrollment zone, said the name was chosen in 1958 as message to chill a burgeoning civil rights movement in San Antonio. “I was a young child at the time, but have vivid memories of the signs of bigotry, segregation and discrimination in the South,” Warren said. “Lee High School was built during that era of very blatant bigotry and discrimination, and I don’t think it was an accident that a name was chosen that legitimized, if not glorified, the ideals of the Confederacy, which was the enslavement of other human beings.” According to Warren, “We are at a point now in our history where it’s really time to not name a public institution after someone who led Confederate forces. I understand that Lee may have been a very complex and nuanced figure in history, and by some perspectives even an honorable man,
Be honest. Be kind. Be the best you can be.®

but that rightly belongs in a social studies class, not as the name of a public school.” Outcries nationwide to remove Confederate symbols picked up steam after a suspect in a racially motivated mass shooting in a Charleston, South Carolina church was seen in a photo with a Confederate battle flag. Subsequently, the flag was removed at the South Carolina State House by order of state lawmakers. Not much later, officials at the University of Texas at Austin voted to remove a statue of CSA President Jefferson Davis and transport it to a museum.

Stylists at new salon reinventing barbershop by RUBEN RENTERIA
O
pening recently at Huebner Oaks, 18 | 8 Fine Men’s Salon wants to redefine the haircut and styling experience by offering a variety of high-end services. It’s “the reinvention of the barbershop, an experience designed to bring out the best in men,” according to the company’s website. Located at 11745 Interstate 10 West, Suite 400, the salon draws its name from a metallurgical composition discovered by Harry Brearly, a combination of 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. The mix produces an enhanced form of stainless steel free of rust. Salon co-founders Ron Love and Scott Griffiths got their inspiration from the formula, and they say their chain of salons
rejuvenates and transforms customers by helping them feel and perform better. Jose Nieves García and Marina Wones de García, the bilingual husband-andwife franchise owners of the I-10 store, want to introduce the city to what they describe as a revolutionary concept. The business offers one-time and membership deals for highend haircuts/styling, hair care and grooming services for men. With semi-private stations, a changing room, a TV lounge and complimentary beverage services, they hope customers will feel the salon caters to every need. While the franchise is tailored to males, female customers are welcome. The couple and their four children originally hail from Monterrey, Mexico. Marina Wones de García has been a stay-athome mom and her husband worked as a pilot. The business also utilizes social
media to post pictures of clients and promote monthly specials. Walkins are welcome, and appointments can be made online or by phone. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

European street food comes to the North Side by SANA HARHARA
A
restaurant featuring “handstacked meats” started in 2011 by two German students at the University of Texas at Austin has made its way to the Park North shopping center.
VertsKebap — pronounced “vurts-kuhbop” — is a European street food. According to the company website, a kebap is short for “döner kebap,” which loosely translates to “spinning roasted meat” and refers to the rotisserie meat that makes the kebap unique. VertsKebap, 842 N.W. Loop 410, opened May 16. Some have likened the fare to “German fast-food,” though the art of roasting kebaps originated in Turkey. The restaurant’s slogan references its multinational origins: “Born in Bursa.

Perfected in Berlin. Jalapeñoed in Austin.” Michael Heyne and Dominik Stein created the restaurant while at UT, where they studied business together and bonded over their favorite street food from their native Germany. “I ate VertsKebap quite a bit while getting my degree in public relations,” said Julie Sondecker, a restaurant spokeswoman and a UT alumna. “Upon graduation, I reached out to them directly about a job and one thing led to another and here I am.” The food makes VertsKebap different from other chain restaurants, Sondecker said. “It is offering a product (the döner kebap) that is different from anything else available in the fast-casual
market,” she said. “Freshness is key in the preparation of our food. All of our sauces, falafel and veggies patties are made from scratch in-house.” Meat selections include beef, lamb and chicken. All the slow, vertically roasted meats and fresh veggies are hand-cut each day. Most menu items are under 550 calories. The company has 23 restaurants in Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
