Keeping it real … timely for LOCAL
A
few readers have wondered why submissions about their events sometimes don’t make it into LOCAL Community News. The answer is simple: We need to receive those releases by our deadlines in order to share your news with the public. Believe me, I understand the frustration when someone opens the newspaper expecting to see their item about an important club event, health fair, concert — you name it — and there is no mention whatsoever. After all, LOCAL is the ideal vehicle to publicize such news. We produce five monthly, zoned newspapers that are direct-mailed to 200,000 homes and businesses across the greater San Antonio area. We are filling a gap in news coverage by reporting on what others don’t — namely, neighborhood news. The response to our brand of journalism has been fantastic. However, because we have a limited staff and our publications are planned weeks in advance, it is imperative that releases about calendar items or neighborhood happenings get to us two months before LOCAL goes to press. Even a month ahead is good, too. Of course, I realize that not everyone planning an event is ready to release details as early as two months in advance. We will work with those folks who send us submissions really close to deadline, but I can’t guarantee the items will always get in. If you are responsible for publicity, marketing or events in your organization, please know that we want to see your endeavor get the widest exposure possible. Too often I have to write back to folks informing them our deadline is past and I can’t help them. I would like to reverse that trend, but I need your help. Please send submissions in a timely manner to tedwards@salocallowdown. com or tips@salocallowdown.com.

LOCAL COMMENTARY
S.A. is proud to be Military City USA by SUSAN YERKES
M
ay is national Military Appreciation Month, and it’s a good time to think about why San Antonio’s nickname — “Military City U.S.A.” — is so appropriate. More than three centuries ago, conquistadores arrived at the San Antonio River and established the Presidio San Antonio de Béjar as the headquarters of Spanish colonial power. The Alamo was a strategic defense post in Texas’ struggle for independence. Texas Rangers and Confederate troops came and went. In the 20th century, the U.S. military began a steady expansion here. The first military airplane flew at Fort
Sam Houston’s parade field in 1910, and by 1950 Randolph, Kelly and Lackland were official Air Force bases. While the federal Base Realignment and Closure process shook the city with the shutdown of Kelly AFB, more change has expanded Brooke Army Medical Center and rebuilt Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, now part of the massive Joint Base San Antonio. Lackland is also the beating heart of Air Force basic training. Fifty Fridays a year, hundreds of young men and women graduate from basic to become airmen. In April, I attended one of those graduations, along with hundreds of invited friends and family members who hailed from across the country to cheer their loved ones as they stepped into the Air Force ranks. After the ceremony, I noticed real estate agent John Thurman, a tall civilian gentleman, warmly greeting some of those visitors as they swarmed out of the paradeground bleachers.Thurman has become a passionate proponent of civilian outreach to the rank-and-file military folks stationed here, and to those who visit town to see enlistees or do business. As an “Honorary Commander,” an unofficial designation given to civilian volunteers who help the Air
Force (the Army calls them “Honorary Quartermasters”), Thurman wants families to know San Antonio is a friendly place, one they’ll want to enjoy while they’re here, and return to in the future. Thurman is one of many such community volunteers, from the venerable MilitaryCivilian Club and the Ambassadors program to the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee. It’s not just about patriotism, or warm and fuzzy feelings for the folks in the armed services. It’s also good business to appreciate visitors. One recent study indicates that military-related visits generate 2 million hotel-room stays a year. And that’s just one aspect of the enormous economic and professional impact the military has on our town. This year, as groups and individuals around town geared up for May’s Military Appreciation Month events, headlines announced the Army is considering a $95 billion budget cut and “force reduction.” The Chamber estimated the city could lose thousands of military and civilian personnel over the next five years. The hard fact is that these days, while the military presence is still strong here, America’s armed forces are eversmaller and leaner, if no less proud and patriotic. In World War II, when Kelly
was in its heyday, more than 10 percent of Americans had family members in the service. Today that number has shrunk to less than 1 percent. And there’s not much that most folks can do about it but adapt. Thurman and many other San Antonians are doing what they can to boost San Antonio’s image with the many visitors who travel here to visit or work with the military. Just saying “thank you” to active-duty folks and veterans is another way we can all help – as many do. The nonprofit Paseo del Rio Association’s May 16 America's Armed Forces River Parade is a great time to show your support. From May 1-16, you can also donate to the group’s Yellow Ribbon Project. For a $5 donation, you can sponsor a yellow ribbon to help line the River Walk as a visible show of gratitude (see https://www.thesanantonioriverwalk. com/events/yellow-ribbon-project). This fall, San Antonio’s Celebrate America's Military, organized annually around Veterans Day, is another time when opportunities to say “thank you” abound. As Military City U.S.A, we have much to be proud of, and much to be grateful for. How can you help express that in your life today? For comments, email syerkes@ salocallowdown.com.

OUR TURN Views and opinions about your community
Support for local troops needed again
I
t is time once more for residents of San Antonio and other area cities to rally around the troops. With talk surfacing again about military reductions as a consequence of sequestration, local voices must be heard in Washington, D.C., to preserve the various missions at Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis. Local leaders are not taking the possible drawbacks lying down, but more must be done. There has to be a groundswell of support to get military commanders and the politicians at the national level on board. The loss of active-duty personnel and related services at the venerable Army post will create not a ripple effect but a virtual tidal wave that could disrupt area economies and
community ties for years to come. If the reduction happens, forecasts call for nearly a half-billion dollars in lost revenue a result, with the impact reaching into virtually everyone’s wallet. The auto industry, trades, services, housing stock, education and so much more could take a hit if the Army draws down its troop strength. According to the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, the loss could be as much as $382 million. Restructuring and budget restraints mandated by the federal government include a 25 percent reduction in soldiers over the next five years, according to a 2014 assessment. Experts say that equates to a possible loss of 3,949 soldiers and 1,985 civilians from Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis. The draw down actually creates a bigger crater in the San Antonio financial landscape once 9,008 family members are added to that 5,900-person reduction. The figure grows to nearly 15,000. Washington needs to know San Antonio has paid its dues in terms of military-force reduction over the years — remember Kelly

The perks allow CST to invest in upgrades and keep 280 professional positions, 305 in total jobs. In addition, another 100 employees could be added by 2019. “The incentives package put together by the county and the city is a great example of how incentives can work to retain a great corporate headquarters and strengthen the community’s workforce in San Antonio,” said District 10 Councilman Mike Gallagher. “CST Brands will be a great addition to District 10 and I look forward to our continued partnership.” WORK ON THE HARDY OAK BOULEVARD
EXTENSION continues at a rapid clip, said District 9 Councilman Joe Krier. “The new extension of Hardy Oak will run from Stone Oak (Parkway) to Knights Cross (Drive) and will include a shared-use path and sidewalks, as well as curbs and driveway approaches,” Krier said in a news release. “Street excavation through the project site, chipping out rock and demolition and hauling off rock and debris is underway. Over the next several weeks, (the city’s Transportation & Capital Improvements) will begin trenching for utility work, laying water line and storm drain and trenching for streetlights.” CARSON THOMAS ‘TOM’ MILLER, A JUNIOR AT JOHNSON HIGH SCHOOL AND A WIND-ENSEMBLE MEMBER, has been named a winner in Sam Houston State University’s Texas Emerging Composers Competition. The Texas Music Educators Association All-Area trumpet player submitted a composition earlier this year, which a panel of composers and university faculty gave high marks. Miller received a certificate plus $300, and heard the college’s Old Main Brass Choir, conducted by Joseph Vranas at the 53rd Annual SHSU Contemporary Music Festival, perform, “A Night On False Light,” the student’s piece.

Muscles and Aging As we age, our bodies lose lean muscle mass. Even if our weight hasn’t changed much since our active 20’s and 30’s, and especially if we are sedentary, we have exchanged lean muscle tissue for fat. You might be thinking, “Why is this a problem?” or “There’s not much I can do about getting older.” Muscle loss equates to lower metabolism, increased risk of insulin resistance, lower energy and strength levels, and less endurance for the activities we enjoy in our everyday lives. What’s more, recent studies (Newman 2006, Cesari 2009) reported associations between lower leg strength and reduced longevity and lower walking speed and reduced longevity. While we can’t avoid getting older, there are some steps we can take to stop this process and build healthy, lean muscle mass. We do this by eating a balanced diet with adequate calories and protein and by stimulating muscle growth with strength training. Adequate Protein It is important to eat adequate amounts of protein at each meal throughout the day so your body has protein available for building muscle. Recent studies suggest that the optimal daily protein intake for active adults, athletes, and aging adults is 0.5 to 0.8 grams per pound of body weight. For someone who weighs 150 lbs., this equates to about 30g of protein at each meal and one snack. In the hours just after eating a protein meal, available protein actually helps to turn on or stimulate the muscle-building process. Research has shown that the amino acid, leucine, which is highest in milk and dairy, is particularly good at stimulating muscle growth. Strength Training However, diet alone will not sufficiently slow down or stop the loss of lean muscle tissue. Weight-bearing exercise or strength training is the best way to increase lean muscle and improve strength. SuperSlow Zone is a 20 minute Strength Training program performed in a private, climate controlled, music free environment. SuperSlow Zone is guaranteed to get you results.

PANTHER SPRINGS continues from pg. 17 “Panther Springs Park shows what residents can accomplish,” Krier said. “Neighbors rallied behind this project, supported the 2012 bond election, and got all of us on board to make this a reality that we can all now enjoy.” Philanthropist and developer Dan Parman donated 7 acres to the park, a parcel that encompasses the dog park, park entrance and parking lot. The San Antonio River Authority donated the remaining 279 acres of land to the city. The project was funded with $2.5 million from the 2012-17 bond program. “This is the first new park that has been opened in District 9 since Hardberger Park opened in 2010,” Krier said. “Since I came into this position over a year and a half ago, the residents of this area have said to me that they wanted a park where they can take their kids to experience nature. In the past, parks were constructed to feature things like elaborate playgrounds and basketball courts and things like that. Now, I think we all want more green space and want to experience nature. That’s what Panther Springs brings.” Efforts to create the park started about a decade ago and involved multiple partners including the city, the Mays

longtime supporter of the park. “The 78258 and 78260 ZIP codes had less park and outdoor recreational space per capita than other council districts. Area residents wanted facilities and amenities such as the park and made those wants known.” According to the park’s Facebook page, the area includes 2.5 miles of concrete trail, 8-feet wide, for walking, jogging, hiking

Parents Lori Rudolph and Melissa “Missy” Isbell started the troop seven years ago. “It’s not an easy volunteer position, but we do it for the girls,” Rudolph said. The middle school students work on Silver Award projects, with one to four girls collaborating on a meaningful cause, officials said. It’s the highest award a Cadette can earn.
Presently, two Scouts distribute information about fire safety for pets, while two others build a bookshelf to house media at a dialysis center. Fifty total hours are spent on Silver Award projects. Research began in September, with the Scouts promoting their activity. Asking for donations started in January. Rudolph’s daughter, Sarah, conceived her assignment, “Animals Inside: Pets & Fire Safety,” after watching a television show where some humans were rescued during a house fire, but the pets perished. Sarah and another Scout, Malena Desai, created a sticker alerting first responders that pets are inside a home. Owners place the notice on a door or window specifying how many animals, and what type, are there. “I thought that people should know that there (are) animals in the house so none of this happens again,” Sarah said. The duo also created a brochure, a PowerPoint presentation and an informational poster board outlining ways to prevent fires, how to react if a fire occurs, and listing items for pet-emergency and first-aid kits. They also met with the city’s Animal Care Services and San Antonio Fire

Though printing costs were high, Malena’s father said they could produce the brochures at his office and the stickers were made at the Rudolphs. Fundraising from cookie sales provided $200 apiece to each Silver Award project. Malena, Sarah and a few other Scouts distributed stickers and brochures at the March 11 grand opening of Panther Springs Park, including at the dog park. “We had quite a few animal lovers there who were interested in learning more about protecting their pets in an emergency,” said Melissa Sparks, a spokeswoman with the city’s Transportation & Capital Improvements. “The girls did a great job of providing information and interacting with the people who were attending the event.” So far, the girls have circulated more than 400 brochures to people at dog parks, pet stores and more, including Phil Hardberger Park. “We like seeing people’s smiles on their faces when we help them, and it feels good when we see that,” Malena said. They are bringing their pet-safety awareness campaign to the east side of Hardberger Park, 13203 Blanco Road, from 8:30-11 a.m. May 16. Then,

You just feel good to not just sit there and see other people needing help.” Kayla got the idea from her mother, the center’s director. She constructed the bookshelf in her father’s shop and, when completed, it will stand 5-feet

Troop leaders Rudolph and Isbell have begun researching new tasks for their Scouts. Rudolph and Mona Desai, Malena’s mother, recently reconnected with Reidy at SAFD and are considering a large landscaping venture later this year.
In addition to working towards their Silver Awards, the troop just concluded a food-donation drive for area fire stations, baked cookies for San Antonio State Hospital patients and collected items for the San Antonio Food Bank. Mona Desai attributes the troop’s success to the girls’ lasting friendship. “I think that’s helped them when they go out to the community,” she said. “They’re able to show that they can work together and have a really successful troop that can provide services for the community.” For more on the troop, how to get involved or donate, email gstroop44@yahoo.com.

APRIL 27 - JUNE 2, 2015 lanes or free-access lanes,” said Renee Green, the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority’s director of engineering and operations, as well as director of Bexar County Public Works. “This project will reduce congestion and double the number of lanes that exists today.” The Alamo RMA is an independent governmental agency created by the Texas Transportation Commission and the Bexar County Commissioners Court in 2003 to help expedite area transportation projects. Proponents say the proposed 281 expansion of nearly 8 miles from 1604 to Borgfeld Road is meant to relieve traffic congestion and increase better traffic flow, and give motorists more commuting and transportation options. But not everyone supports the idea. “This has been a political fight from day one — a targeted tax on 281 commuters,” said Terri Hall, founder and director of Texans for Toll-free Highways. “Our politicians have enabled unelected boards to steal the non-toll funding for this roadway, jack up the cost and engage in highway robbery to turn a freeway into a tollway on their watch.” Meanwhile, the Texas Department of Transportation, the agency that has oversight for many of the state’s toll

decision on whether to add toll lanes to an 8-mile stretch of U.S. 281 north of Loop 1604 won’t get any traction until the federal government reviews an Environmental Impact Statement, officials said. On the table now is a proposal — which is derided by a consortium of anti-toll activists — that calls for adding six “managed lanes” to 281 in which motorists are charged when they use them. Critics claim Texans’ taxes already fund the roads, so it’s unfair to make motorists pay again to drive on them. “The U.S. 281 project will offer a choice for motorists between managed

allows motorists on a 2.93-miles stretch from 1604 to Stone Oak Parkway to choose managed lanes (require a fee, no stop lights); freeway lanes (no fees, no stoplights); or free-access lanes (no fees, with stop lights, driveways and intersections). Today there are six free-access lanes for this stretch of 281. Under the proposal, four new freeway lanes would have free access for motorists, and two new managed lanes would require a fee (with some exceptions), for a total of six new lanes. These would be built in the middle of the existing six free-access lanes, for a total of 12 — 10 free lanes and two managed. In addition, the 4.36-mile stretch of 281 from Stone Oak to Borgfeld Road would give motorists a choice between managed lanes and free-access lanes. Currently there are four existing free-access lanes. Six new managed lanes (four free and two managed) would be added to this stretch of 281 for a total of 10 lanes. One controversy putting the brakes on toll roads is a recent problem with the state’s toll-tag system, in which motorists with a specific electronic TxTag on their vehicles are allowed to go through tollways without stopping

roads, is dealing with a public-relations crisis after it overbilled motorists on toll roads elsewhere. In some circles, lawmakers are calling for an end to future toll roads, with even a few pushing to scrap toll roads altogether. In the meantime, the ongoing 281 Environmental Impact Statement — which started in 2009 — awaits a “record of decision,” when it is finished, from the Federal Highway Administration, which will review the study. Its approval paves the way for funding and development. “The EIS basically takes a look at what is going to be the effect of the surrounding environment that is caused by that project,” said Monica Ramos, a spokeswoman with the Alamo RMA. “In the EIS we have to explain what our two proposed alternatives are for the 281 road,” Ramos added. “We either build and here’s what happens, or we don’t build and here’s what happens. We recommend that we build the roads and this is why we believe that. We call that our ‘preferred alternative,’ as opposed to our no-build alternative.” Ramos said the EIS has been going through a lengthy process involving analysis, community meetings, public hearings and public commentary. But during the legislative session, transportation officials admitted improper billing led to tens of thousands of TxTag motorists being overcharged by as much as $1.7 million. Upset TxTag customers voiced their grievances, and state lawmakers grilled TxDOT officials and billing vendor Xerox Corp. after the mishap came to light. “TxDOT is committed to correcting any inaccurate billing, helping customers settle their accounts and improving their overall TxTag experience,” said Josh Donat, a spokesman for the San Antonio office of TxDOT. “Recently, we began sending $1.7 million in refunds to TxTag tollway users who incurred and had paid fees related to stalled transactions in the prior tolling system. In addition, we are also waiving unpaid fees that resulted from this interrupted transaction processing.” Donat said the highway department has increased staffing at call centers to speed up customer service. “TxDOT takes its responsibility of managing our toll operations seriously and will continue to hold our vendor, Xerox, accountable as we work toward solutions to correct

the TxTag billing system,” he said. Hall said the latest revelations only show that toll roads are not good for motorists. “Commuters were promised a non-toll expansion to this highway years ago,” Hall said. “It was paid for with gas taxes. Then a bait-and-switch happened, turning it into a tollway. When the citizens rejected the double-tax toll plan, TxDOT sent the money elsewhere and then said, ‘Sorry, there’s no money to fix it without tolls.’” Hall said tollways represent extra taxation. “That’s a clear conversion of freeway lanes into toll lanes — a double-tax ripoff. We will not stop until this freeway is expanded without tolls as promised in public hearings in 2001,” she said. Officials from Alamo RMA, however, insist that existing free lanes will remain that way. “One thing to note is that these are not designated as ‘tolled’ lanes but rather ‘managed lanes,’” Ramos said. “By designating them as ‘managed lanes,’ we can allow buses and registered car-pool drivers to access the lanes for free. Every lane that people drive on now for free now will still be able to drive on for free once this is built. The managed lanes are the ones that will be in the middle lanes.”

“The idea is to introduce people to rain-barrel technology,” said Joe Silman, president of the Stone Oak Property Owners Association. “There are rain tanks that you can install and collect enough water to irrigate, if you put a pump on. When building a new home, you could install a system.” According to Silman and others, collected rainwater is perfect for irrigation. Not only is it free, but also plants prefer it because rainwater lacks salts and other minerals, which could hinder root growth.
APRIL 27 - JUNE 2, 2015 The Stone Oak POA held its Spring 2015 Rain Barrel Workshop March 7, the third since beginning the program in March 2014. Meg Lorente, the Stone Oak POA property manager, said 33 residents attended. The POA will continue holding workshops each spring and fall as long as there’s a demand. Lorente said the POA tried to make water conservation part of community life and set an example through xeriscaping. “We wanted to bring area residents into that (effort) as well,” she said. The POA formed a project committee with representatives from the San Antonio Water System, Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District and Texas A&M University’s AgriLife Extension Service. “Out of several meetings, came the idea,” Lorente said. AgriLife was already providing seminars across San Antonio. To make the sessions more affordable and accessible to Stone Oak residents, the POA shares the $25 per person workshop expense with Trinity. The cost includes the collection barrel, the only equipment needed. At each class participants learn from technicians who wade through the process.

SALOCALLOWDOWN.COM RAIN BARREL continues from pg. 24 Barrels can usually be placed near a gutter or porch overhang, but instructors work individually to help property owners identify the best places in their yards. Depending on roof composition and pitch, a 1,000-squarefoot covering can yield about 600 gallons of rainwater from a 1-inch rainfall. SAWS supports rainwater-collection projects and provides workshop information about rebates, plus homeowners’ yardand garden-conservation alterations. Cory Van Pelt of the National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio office said due to El Niño, this is a good time for rainwater-collection systems. El Niño is the name given for warmer-than-usual ocean temperatures near the equator in the Pacific Ocean, causing increased rainfall across the U.S. southern tier. The El Niño current, he said, indicates near-normal rainfall during spring, followed by a drier summer, and then more autumn precipitation. The region is also in the grip of a five-year drought. Collecting rainwater makes sense in average periods, in case El Nino doesn’t last past year’s end, Van Pelt said. At workshops, AgriLife instructors
An instructor indicates how a rain-collection barrel can conserve water for home irrigation during a recent class. help participants modify barrels. After drilling a hole in its top, a 1-gallon pot plant container is inserted and filled with small rocks to filter water running from a rooftop or gutter. Two more holes are made – one for overflow, or to connect to a second barrel – and one near the bottom for a spigot or garden-hose attachment. Together, three or four people can build a rain barrel in about five minutes. Folks leave the event with an understanding of how they could
help conserve water, and each takes home a rain-collection barrel. “We’ve had nothing but positive comments. It’s been very well received,” Lorente said. Silman has been collecting rainwater in two 55-gallon barrels he took home from last year’s first workshop. He’s had no trouble filling them, he said. He uses a rain chain extending from a gutter to the opening of the barrel, and said he always has an
overflow. Besides rain chains, another option is to direct a downspout to a couple of inches above the opening. “It’s obviously not going to be enough to irrigate the lawn; we use it to water our indoor and outdoor pot plants,” Silman said. Stone Oak POA maintains 11 miles of medians. In 2007, the POA began implementing a plan to reduce irrigationwater consumption by targeting 8.5 miles of medians by switching from turf to hardscape, where appropriate, and converting the remainder to a more efficient irrigation plan. The POA has completed five of the 8.5 miles, resulting in 1,514 irrigation sprays and rotors being capped. With watering no longer necessary or drip irrigation handling the remaining turf, water consumption has been reduced 60 percent the last three years. The next workshop is in September. Information will appear in a mailed newsletter to all Stone Oak property owners, as well as in July’s billing. For additional details, visit www. stoneoakpoa.com, or go to the Parman Branch Library, 20735 Wilderness Oak Road, or call 207-2703. Workshops are held at POA headquarters, 19210 Huebner Road (at Blanco Road), Suite 100. To register, contact Angel Torres at the AgriLife Extension office at 467-6575.

Some of the credit goes to a clever commercial the pupils produced highlighting the campus’ shop and its merchandise, educators said. The School-based Enterprise, or SBE, which is the store at the Stone Oak campus, was among 285 such ventures in the country achieving recertification this year, and at gold level – the highest of three tiers. Those enterprises were recognized at the International Career Development

Conference in late April, an event organized by Distributive Education Clubs of America, or DECA, in Orlando, Florida. With help from their adviser, Michelle Moore, students Dalton Lett and Chris Taylor teamed up to certify the Reagan DECA program. “I am beyond proud of my students and all their hard work,” Moore said. “They have done a beautiful job with the store this year and deserve every ounce of recognition that they are receiving.” Since 1943, DECA has prepared emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges worldwide. In addition to achieving gold-level certification, the Reagan SBE chapter placed first in the video challenge. Competing student teams were asked to incorporate primary elements found in advertisements, such as grabbing viewers’ attention, generating interest and desire, and encouraging viewers to act. The group filmed commercials touting vital new products or services recently introduced in their campus SBE — in this case, a phone charger with the Reagan Rattler logo. Conducting business since

Taylor and Lett wrote a 16-page paper detailing the research and operations of the campus site for the current school year, as part of the program’s recertification effort. The Reagan DECA team infused levity into its video, which advertises the importance of having a portable phone charger on campus, a dilemma students commonly face during school hours. In the production, Taylor asks the audience in a deep, authoritative voice — “Has this ever happened to you?” — a method advertisers often utilize. The video involves a call to action for viewers to “make their life easier” by acquiring a portable charger, and highlights other popular Reagan SBE items. The sales pitch is delivered in an easygoing tone. Lett and Taylor said they developed an advertisement they thought best represented the school. “We decided to add some humor in the script, so it could better grab the attention of the people who watched it,” Lett said. “The script was accomplished in a period of three days, the filming of our video only took 45 minutes.”

In addition to the competition submission, the students’ video can be seen during morning news announcements on campus. Moore said while this is her second year at the high school, Reagan’s DECA program continues to evolve. She attributed much of its growth to leadership skills exhibited by student participants such as Lett, who’s also the chapter’s vice president of fundraising. “Last year we had 29 members, 25 of
which competed at district, 19 of which advanced and competed at state, and four of which advanced and competed at the international level,” Moore said. One of her students last year, Andy Young, was a finalist in the Principles of Marketing event. This year, Reagan’s DECA membership has more than doubled to 59. Forty-seven students vied at the district level, 33 advanced to state competitions, and three contestants ascended internationally. In addition to Lett and Taylor, Alec Mire represented the Reagan chapter in Orlando. The chapter president, Mire has reached international competition each of his four years in school. The Reagan DECA group received awards including a $150 gift card to DECA Images, the organization’s store featuring related products, apparel and educational materials, and a $100 cash prize from DECA SBE’s premier sponsor, Otis Spunkmeyer. Lett and Taylor said they’ve received positive feedback from classmates and friends about their video. “They felt we entertained them while also informing them about the school store,” Taylor said. “We can honestly say that receiving this recognition and being able to advance to ICDC is a huge honor.”

Director: Theater can bring out the best in young people by EILEEN PACE

Mary Claire Becan, director of the new Magik Performing Arts Center at 5359 Casa Bella Road, has seen acting turn a key that can open the door for a child into a world that is, well, magical. “Performance art is a transformative thing. It gives you sympathy for other people because you’re taking on their character and trying to think what they’re thinking,” she said. Whereas productions at the wellknown downtown theater at 420 S. Alamo St. have been aimed at young audiences for generations, the recently opened performing-arts venue is a teaching center designed to offer knowledge about the craft of acting to child thespians. Shelley Weber, director of education and outreach at the Magik Theatre, said she felt the new location was needed to reach more families. “Our founder, Richard Rosen, started Magik 21 years ago with a plan to serve as many people as possible,” Weber said. “We started Magik Performing Arts Center because we felt the need for a secondary location to expand the learning opportunity outside downtown.” With its constant run of professional performances, Magik had limitations on its time and space and it was difficult to expand a teaching program. “The downtown location teaches on Saturday mornings only — and summer camp, Spring Break, as well,” Weber said. “But the new school will allow afterschool and weekend classes as well as serving the home-school population.” Becan, whose educational background is psychology, has for several years owned and managed the Northside Performing Arts Center. There she saw what acting could to do to bring new dimensions to children’s personalities and abilities. “People learn so many things in addition to this one thing – performance activity – that you can carry into different areas of your life,” she said. Becan tells her own story of
MAGIK continues on pg. 29

SALOCALLOWDOWN.COM MAGIK continues from pg. 28 becoming an acting student. “When I was a kid, I had the worst temper,” she said. “I was angry at people all the time. When I was in third grade, my best friend told me she couldn’t be friends with me anymore because I was too mad all the time.” “So my mom was always trying to find outlets for me. I tried soccer, I tried sports, I tried horseback riding — and I enjoyed those things, but there was something about finding dance and theater that gave me the right outlook and kind of changed my personality overnight almost. It gave all of that energy and intensity a place to go,” she added. Becan said kids fall into two different categories of acting students. “A lot of times parents have a child that’s a precocious child and outspoken and intense and they have such a personality. And their friends are telling them they’re such an actor, that they should be in acting classes,” she said. “But we also see a lot of parents putting their kids in classes who need a self-esteem boost or who are shy around their friends. And acting class is practice for that. It’s practice for talking to other people,” she added. “We see both ends of the spectrum — parents wanting to nurture and encourage their little star. But we also see parents wanting to bring out the confidence that they hope their child will have.” Becan said acting can provide a way for a special-needs child to express himself or herself. For example, “Oftentimes a child on the autism spectrum needs things presented very clearly and very literally,” she said. “We had a deaf child – a high schooler – and I just saw such a different person from the day he started classes to his last day with us. He blossomed in self-confidence and the things that he would try.” Even children who face physical challenges can find expression in theatrical arts, she added. “I had a student once in a wheelchair with tracheal tubes. He could still do a lot of things that other kids were doing. He might not be able to get up and run around with them, but he could still memorize his parts and be ready for memorization day,” she said. “You expect them to prepare at home for their characters. I think whether you’re dealing with a disabled child or another child, they rise to every challenge – they rise to the occasion.” As a single mother, Becan began to think of spending more time with her child and less time as a business owner. But her passion wouldn’t let her stop. “I reached out to the Magik Theatre and let them know I was probably going

to close the business. A few months later they called me back — and it was the perfect partnership,” she said. The teaching facility is located in a 5,000-square-foot facility that Becan said was called Minitown in its former life. “It had a beauty salon, a mini-H-E-B and a movie theater. The beauty salon has become our dressing room with tables and lights. We do improv classes in the former movie theater,” she said. The performing arts center can accommodate up to 90 students in its six classrooms. There are plans to add full-length productions to the classes in the future, and Weber said there’s also a discussion about whether to bring Magik’s Theatre for the Very Young to the new performing arts center. “That’s being held at the Pearl right now, but we are discussing a possible move in the fall,” Weber said. The school offered a preview event at the end of March and began accepting registrations for students to start classes the following week. Becan is eager for kids to get the experience of acting classes for a host of reasons. “You can learn a lot about acting from a book,” Becan said, “but there’s nothing like a full-spectrum production to help a child learn experiences like being in front of an audience and forgetting a line or covering up when a fellow actor forgets a line or having to hit those cues. There’s nothing that can prepare you for that and there’s nothing that can teach you that better than doing it. “The kids that I’ve taught – a
lot of them are studying theater in college, maybe 25 to 30 percent have gone on to study theater. More

participate in theater as a hobby while they’re studying something else. “I have a student who just received a scholarship for her 4-H (Club) activities, and as part of her qualifying she had to give a huge speech. Her mom called me and thanked me for the things her daughter learned here.” For more information, call 375-5458, email maryclaire@magiktheatre.org or visit http://www.magiktheatre.org/.

New gym offers fitness focus for women by EILEEN PACE

hen bride-to-be Amanda Lawrence registered for Bella Women’s Fitness in December 2013, she had no idea she was starting a new lifestyle.
These days, “going to Bella’s is part of my weekly routine,” Lawrence said. “The workers there are always so kind and generous to give me any advice on stretching and any form of exercise that I need.” Following the original’s success in Stone Oak, the company just opened its second location — Bella Women’s Fitness CenterRogers Ranch — at 2602 N. Loop 1604 West, Suite 205, in the Bitters Crossing shopping center at Bitters Road and 1604. Focusing on group sessions, operations manager Santiago
Feliciano said Bella provides a comfortable workout environment. “Females often prefer group settings, so the setting we provide is innovative classes … normally accessible only at big gyms,” he said. “We bring them into a smaller location and give them the same quality as a big gym.” Staffers welcome newcomers, he added. “Some people may say, ‘I’ve never done yoga before, so how do I start?’ If they have an injury or other things they are concerned about, we can offer more individual attention,” he said. Feliciano said the machines appeal to women. “At a big gym, they’re going to have hundreds of cardio machines and big dumbbells that guys like to use. We actually have equipment designed for females,” he said, adding Bella offers a

Security is very important to us, and making the ladies feel comfortable no matter what time they come.” Classes include heated hatha yoga, power yoga, Hot Barre, heated Vinyasa, bikini boot camp, booty sculpt, Zumba and heated ballet. Cool down with frozen treats at Flamingo Rey’s Island Ice by COLLETTE ORQUIZ

ith more than 55 shavedice flavors, Flamingo Rey’s Island Ice makes customers feel like they’re kicking back at the beach, said company president Arthur Mayo. “Come visit us and relax and enjoy yourself,” Mayo said. Flamingo Rey’s, 20223 Huebner Road, Suite 101, connected to the Swiftwater Car Wash behind Walgreens, is owned by GFR Development Services. Open since mid-January, the shop offers frozen treats as year-round delights, featuring classics such as cherry, strawberry, blue raspberry and Tiger’s Blood, a children’s favorite. Also included are Mexican-inspired ices such as Piccadilly,
cherry shaved ice with chopped dill pickles and sprinkled with chamoy. Customers can choose various toppings including a sour spray, sprinkles and chocolate syrup, enjoyable inside or on two patios. Also on the menu: refreshing fruit smoothies, fresh-squeezed lemonade and limeade, flavored sodas and sweet teas, frozen lattes, caliente dogs, Frito pie, corn in a cup and nachos. “We make everything here,” Mayo said. “We make all of our syrups with pure cane sugar. Pretty much everything we do is homemade.” Schooled at New York’s Culinary Institute of America, Mayo helped develop several San Antonio-area restaurants including the former Louie LeDeaux Cajun Seafood Kitchen in Selma. Though he’s prepared meals in four- and five-star restaurants, Mayo said he has found his niche. “I love very small concepts that are simple and easy, and we can put out a great product and great service,” Mayo said. Eventually, Mayo hopes to open three freestanding units with a drive-thru, plus two Island Rey’s Parks with outdoor seating, food trucks, basketball and volleyball courts, and some water activities for children. Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Monday

hen Elsa Alonzo returned to San Antonio after 20 years in Los Angeles’ entertainment industry, she longed for the variety of health-conscious options Californians enjoyed. As Alamo City’s food scene evolved, she decided to jump in with her own offering by opening Urth Juice Bar on McCullough Avenue a couple of years ago. Now, the popular juice and smoothie operation is debuting two new locations, including 20821 U.S. 281 North in Stone Ridge Market, situated at the Evans Road intersection. While Urth Juice Bar-Stone Ridge features a striking mix of reclaimed

woods with blue floors plus lime and orange walls, there is more to it than just colorful surroundings. As smoothies — such as Strawberry Fields, a popular hit — and juices including the top-selling Grassy Knoll still command center stage, the new spot also incorporates healthy salads and sandwiches. Co-owner Alonzo suggested sampling the Acai Bowl, which is basically “a smoothie in a bowl.” She called in Casey Miller, a chef and nutritionist, to help create the salads. The Strawberry Crumble and K&Q, or kale and quinoa, are Alonzo’s favorites. Sandwiches range from vegetarian, to some with chicken, turkey or tuna. “San Antonio is changing and is
embracing the grass roots (food) movement,” Alonzo said. “We want to be part of that, but in a fun way.” Hint: For a minimal fee, Urth Juice Bar delivers. The other new location is in the King William Historic District at 812 S. Presa St. The original is at The Yard, 5317 McCullough Ave. Hours at Stone Ridge Market’s location are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
