A new year’s resolution: Practice compassion by susan yerkes
N
elson Mandela was a man of fierce compassion. When the world mourned his death in December, I recalled meeting him at an International Women’s Forum Conference in Johannesburg a few years ago. Mandela’s battle against the injustice that shamed his homeland led him, before his imprisonment, to endorse violent resistance. But instead of growing bitter in prison, he grew stronger in the belief that only compassionate change could save his country. And he led that change after his release. The word "compassion" is cropping
up everywhere. A network of organizations across this area are working to earn San Antonio the formal designation of an internationally recognized “Compassionate City.” I learned about the movement at the Dialogue Institute of the Southwest’s 9th Annual Dialogue and Friendship Dinner and Awards in December. I also met Compassionate San Antonio volunteer Narjis Pierre, who works with the Peace CENTER, a nonprofit that created a website and serves as a reference point for the initiative. She told me about the Charter for Compassion, created in 2008 by author and teacher Karen Armstrong, whose best-selling book “12 Steps Toward A Compassionate Life” was a springboard for the idea. Armstrong describes it like this: “A compassionate city is an uncomfortable city! A city that is uncomfortable when anyone is homeless or hungry; if every child isn't loved and given rich opportunities to grow and thrive… when as a community we don't treat our neighbors as we would wish to be treated….and where many of its citizens and leaders joyfully embrace a vision of what compassion will look like in their community.”
helps promote. Earning the formal Compassionate City designation will require the City Council to endorse the document. That has already happened in a number of cities. On Jan. 26, the Peace CENTER will hold its annual interfaith Blessing of the Peacemakers and name a new San Antonio Peace Laureate, and they’re organizing a major conference on compassion in March. A rapidly growing number of groups are hosting events focused on compassion. “People respond well to the word compassion,” Pierre said. Our bodies respond well, too. Neurological research shows our brains are “hard-wired for compassion,” according to neurosurgeon James Doty, director of Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education. He recently spoke at Trinity University. As you work to change your community and the world, it seems, you’re also building a stronger body and brain. As the new year begins, I’m putting “More Compassion Action” on my resolution list. I hope you’ll join me. May we all enjoy the best one yet! Email comments to syerkes@ salocallowdown.com
The sacompassionNET.org website has proved a powerful tool for creating awareness and consensus-building, and also distributing a calendar of events. Pierre said supporters can sign the charter online, or at one of many local events the group organizes or

project will also construct a 10-foot-wide concrete hike-and-bike trail on the south side of the roadway, which will connect to the Leon Creek Greenway hike-and-bike trails. According to District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg, this is the largest project in the 2012-2017 Bond Program at $43.5 million, with Bexar County contributing an additional $15.8 million. Grassy medians, a low-impact development design feature, will be included to improve the quality of rainwater draining into waterways. In physical terms, it is the longest project in city history at 3.4 miles. It also marks the first time San Antonio is completing a road/ drainage project in a design-build delivery method. "This project will allow Hausman Road to connect residents to businesses and services with less traffic and more safety," Nirenberg said in a prepared release.

and Parochial Schools Division II State Championship 65-44 over Fredericksburg Heritage, ending the season 14-0. This is the first state championship for Castle Hills in four seasons of having a six-man team. Juniors Dante Johnson and Micah Allmond and seniors Ethan Leos and Michael Chairez all made First Team All-State and senior quarterback Andrew Nava made Second Team All-State. Dante, a running back, ended the season as the leading rusher in the state at all levels of football both public and private as well as the leading scorer in the nation for both public and private schools, averaging more than 35 points per game for a total of 457 points for the season, school officials said. The school is at 2220 N.W. Military Highway.
JACKSON-KELLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL students and their families recently celebrated reading in style, educators said. Students and teachers dressed as their favorite storybook characters and enjoyed reading and writing by participating in numerous literacy centers and games.
VICTOR RAGA, VICE PRINCIPAL AT COLONIES NORTH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, recently "stuck" to his promise to
let students attach him to a wall using duct tape as part of a fall fundraiser for school events and activities. For every five items sold, a student received a piece of tape that could be used to fasten Raga to the wall. The project raised more than $9,600.

ESA and the Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s Leaders on the Fast Track named Mia as a recipient of the ESA LOFT Video Game Innovation Fellowship along with 19 other minority youths from across the country. The 20 ESA LOFT Video Game Innovation Fellows, ages 15 to 25, were awarded grants for creating video games that seek solutions to problems in their communities. Mia developed an application called “Cards for a Cause: App for Literacy" with the Apps for Aptitude team. A recognition ceremony for the North East Independent School District student and her colleagues took place Dec. 4 in Washington, D.C. THE SIXTH ANNUAL LAS CASAS PERFORMING ARTS SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION is accepting applications
from college-bound high school seniors living in the San Antonio area with interests and abilities in the performing arts. The Las Casas Foundation is offering more than $85,000 in scholarships. Application forms, along with application requirements, audition guidelines and scholarship criteria, are available at www. lascasasfoundation.org. Applications may be submitted online and must be received by Feb. 17. Four categories are featured in the competition: vocal solo, acting solo, acting duet and dance solo. Scholarships are also awarded to essay winners and an additional $5,000 is awarded to the overall category winner, meaning one senior will act, sing or dance away with $10,000. Preliminary auditions, judged by theater professionals, will take place in April at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre in San Antonio.

Mayor urges residents to sign up soon Officials said City Secretary Zina Tedford is leading the effort to get the new system ready. Tedford said the i-INFO system provides the city with more communications options, but does not replace other emergencynotification programs. “As a reminder, local television and radio, NOAA Weather Radio, outdoor warning sirens and other warning systems are still your primary sources for immediate emergency information," Tedford said. "The mass-notification registry is another tool available to alert the public to emergency situations.” Residents can sign up by going online to http://r.i-info.com/rc/arc, which leads to the Alamo Regional Communications registry. Once on the website, those registering can choose whether they want to receive
January 2014
information by text message or email and during emergencies by telephone. Registrants will also be able to select what agencies or cities they want to get available information from and what hours they don’t want to be disturbed. Shavano Park residents can also go through the city’s website at shavanopark. org and click on the Alamo Regional Communications registry logo. The service is free thanks to a grant and is part of a larger, regional effort made up of several area counties. Tedford said the i-INFO system also allows member organizations to share selective portions of information with others, as appropriate and when needed. According to the i-INFO website, organizations can maintain the privacy of their records while also sharing contact information, emergency plans, resources and other critical information with designated
organizations in their networks across the region or across the country. But Shavano Park isn't neglecting those who don't have cellphones or email, the mayor added. “We still do everything else the way we need to do it. You know there are people who don’t have cellphones, who don’t have email. This doesn’t eliminate the need for us to communicate in other ways, but it just makes it easier and faster and more efficient,” Marne said. Marne also praised Tedford’s effort to get the system up and running. “The city secretary has done an outstanding job with this rollout and I've only heard really great things from everyone who’s received anything from it so far," he said. "I’m very pleased with it and I think the citizens will be as well. I encourage them all to sign up and to be on the lookout for opportunities to do that.”

ASTLE HILLS — A person can suffer a brain injury in the blink of an eye — whether it's from a tumble down the stairs, an explosion in combat, a car accident or some other mishap. But that doesn't mean life is over, according to the staff of NeuroRestorative, a provider of rehabilitation services for people with acquired brain injuries. The company, founded in 1977, has a residential facility in Castle Hills and just opened another on Starcrest Drive. “Any one of us are at risk. Brain injury doesn’t just seclude itself to certain populations,” said Rene Mills, director of NeuroRestorative. NeuroRestorative is a branch of the MENTOR Network, a larger system with

Hope continues from pg. 08 group homes and rehabilitation centers across the country. The Castle Hills residential facility is on South Winston Lane, just minutes away from the day treatment center at 2101 Lockhill Selma Road, Suite 208. The company considered other spots in San Antonio, but found Castle Hills to be a great central location because of its accessibility and a friendly environment. Mills said the residential setting allows clients to adapt once more to being at home, rather than in a hospital. “They don’t have a gown on and wear a band and lie in a hospital bed, and get served three meals a day,” Mills said. “They actively do engage in activities that you and I do every day.” Services include physical and occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, supervised transitional living, outpatient day treatment, neuropsychology, behavior intervention, nursing/medical direction, life-skills training and case management. A normal day for clients starts at 6 a.m. They go through daily hygiene routines, get dressed, prepare and eat breakfast, have their vitals recorded, receive their medicine and head over to the day treatment center. At the center, patients check the calendar to see exactly what therapies they will participate in. Brittany Bizzle, the physical therapist for NeuroRestorative, said she helps clients get back to their normal life by teaching them how to walk properly again and work on balance. “You lose your job, your independence, your ability to do anything by yourself, so any amount of that that people can get back is really cool for them to feel like themselves again,” Bizzle said. Speech pathologist Michelle Glenn has the job of mending impaired cognitive skills for clients, including helping them learn again to swallow, eat and communicate.

“You’re trying to get them back to a life they can be happy with and successful in, and you can’t really beat being a part of that,” Glenn said. Clients are 20 to 40 years old, but there are also referrals who range from the elderly to those in their late teens. The primary cause of most brain injuries is from a fall, staffers said, and in many cases these occur in the construction trades. Mills said males are 1.5 times more likely to suffer a brain injury because they are more likely to be active in contact sports, participate in “risky behavior" or be employed in dangerous occupations. Because San Antonio is a military city, wounded service members also have come to NeuroRestorative. A strong sense of community drew NeuroRestorative to Castle Hills. Mills said. “It’s easy to get around, and we’ve found as we’ve been here (that) everyone has been warm and inviting, and we’re glad to be a part of Castle Hills,” Mills said. Amber Brown, owner of Salon Volt located in the same building as the day treatment center, noticed clients coming and going and spoke with Mills to learn more. What she heard touched her heart, and she now offers her salon as a haven to NeuroRestorative and its clients to “get their time to feel beautiful and special.” “Dealing with a brain injury can be very difficult and I felt more comfortable having their patients come here where they can get a little extra care than (a) chain salon … that rushes them in and out,” Brown said. “We really are very much into helping out our little community, especially our neighbors.” While some clients can end up depressed and frustrated, Mills, Bizzle, Glenn and other staff keep the patients going by using encouragement. They said seeing smiles from those who have accomplished their goals is one of the best things about the job. “The most rewarding part is when a patient walks through the door, is so thankful and tells their success stories,” Mills said. “Makes everything worth it.”

Police seek leads in bakery break-in by olivier j. bourgoin
C
ASTLE HILLS — The operators of a French bakery burglarized just days before its grand opening have turned adversity into a fighting chance, they say.
Pol. Adv. paid for by the Karen Crouch Campaign, Mrs. William E. Crouch, Treasurer, 108 Lochaven Lane, San Antonio, TX 78213 in compliance with the voluntary limits of the Judicial Campaign Fairness Act.
Intruders early Dec. 2 smashed the front door of C'est La Vie Baking Co., 8055 West Ave., Suite 107, getting away with the register and some petty cash. Police found the cash register discarded a few blocks away. The business had opened only two months earlier. Their spirits undeterred, founders Eric Lowe and Taylor Becken held a ribbon cutting and grand opening Dec. 10. Today they continue to forge ahead, even though the breakin remains unsolved. "We just hired two part-time employees and that's a huge step for us, learning to manage people, but the business is growing and we need the help. We are putting in a lot of hours," Lowe said. "Our families have been very supportive. They love what we are doing. Taylor's mom also helps with the baking and it's nice to have her involved." The work is hard but rewarding, Becken added. "I'm probably putting in 90 to 100 hours a week right now," Becken said. Business is on the upswing and the entrepreneurs recently bought a sheeter — a machine to roll dough into sheets— to make more croissants. "It's hard for a small bakery to own one, but it was necessary and a no-brainer for
us. It's saving us a lot of time," Becken said. Meanwhile, police hope new leads will develop in the case, said Chief Wayne Davis. "It was a typical case of 'grab and run,'" the chief said. "We found the cash register cracked open nearby and there were no usable fingerprints. Nor were there any usable videos, so unfortunately at this point there are no suspects and the investigation is closed." Police also have few details about the intruders. "It could have been someone living nearby or it could have been someone just roaming," Davis added. Anyone with information is asked to call the Police Department at 342-2341. "To tell you the truth, to us (the burglary) was more of an inconvenience than anything else," Becken said. "At first when we walked in and saw the damage (broken plate-glass door) and realized there had been a theft, it was disappointing, of course, but after a few minutes, we just got over it and we said: 'OK! Let's start cleaning up the mess and get back to work.'" The burglary also helped them learn something about themselves. "It just tested our values a little, but in a positive way, and it really didn't slow us down or bring us down at all," he added. "In fact, it really kind of represents my own philosophy of life and what is at the origin of the name for our business. One of my favorite sayings is … 'Move on, carry on, c'est la vie!'" The 1,500-square-foot bakery sits in a space once occupied by the Buono Dolce cake shop, in the same shopping center that also once hosted Bootleggers wine and chocolate specialty shop. Goodies at C'est la Vie range from an assortment of fresh baked breads and café sandwiches to sweet-and-savory croissants filled with combinations such as spinach

etty Bell remembers how much fun she had as a child—drumming away on the front porch, feet tapping in time to the rhythm.
“Music has always been important in my life; rhythm lifts the spirit,” said the grandmother, who at 73 regularly takes the adult tap-dancing classes offered by the Tap Academy, which is part of San Antonio’s internationally recognized Third Coast Rhythm Project. Bell emphasized that tap is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. “I played the drums and studied piano, clarinet and bassoon in my younger years but never took dance lessons. So, about a decade ago, I decided to make up for it,” she said. After working with several teachers, the decision to master tap’s shuffles, sweeps and stomps brought her to classes taught
by Third Coast director Barbara Phillips, a highly respected tap-dancing performer, instructor and choreographer. And Bell has been tapping her toes to syncopated rhythms at Phillips’ studio ever since, where dancers range in age from 20 to 80. Phillips emphasized that age doesn’t matter with tap. The dance form can be handled by almost anybody, and even a few infirmities aren’t deterrents. “Tap might look strenuous, but it can be adapted for people with physical restraints,” she said. A new series of Tap Academy adult classes begins this month. The curriculum includes sessions for absolute beginners, intermediates and advanced dancers. Mary Hughes, a dedicated adult student at Third Coast, recommends the course and emphasized that benefits go beyond dancing. Tap isn’t just about shuffles and slides, she said. It’s a chance to make new friends, forge a fellowship with caring people and be lifted up when you’re feeling down. Tap is about history, too. Hughes noted that the trends, traditions and ethnic diversity reflected in the movements mirror the march of time. According to historians, the expressive moves that serve as a basis for tap surfaced centuries ago at African celebrations.
Eventually these native dances, sometimes called African Juba, arrived in this country with slave ships and combined with the Irish step dancing and English clogging of immigrants to become an indigenous American art form. Though tap faded in popularity near the end of the 20th century, today it’s enjoying a revival. Phillips is among advocates leading the way, and she has received artistic awards for work that includes mentoring young talents and turning the Alamo City into a hub for hoofers with her Third Coast Rhythm Project. The project was launched some 17 years ago when Phillips moved from Houston to the Alamo City, her hometown. (The Third Coast founder was part of a professional tap dance company and performed extensively in her 20s.) “I studied the dance scene here and realized tap was being largely overlooked,” she said. Encouraged by Lane Alexander, who heads the Chicago Human Rhythm Project, she decided to fill the void with a unique tap program. And the Third Coast Rhythm Project was born. According to Phillips, Third Coast, conceived as a community of dance educators, choreographers, performing
artists and musicians, was warmly welcomed. Classes were designed to entice novices and also to promote and perfect the abilities of more skilled dancers. “We now have classes for children as young as 4 and programs for youth, teens and adults that cover every ability level,” Phillips said. She added that Third Coast offers San Antonio’s only tap classes for adults. But the most impressive achievement, in her opinion, is the International Summer Tap Festival — a four-day event hosted by Third Coast. This year’s festival is July 17-20. Planning the annual festival, along with teaching, performing and directing Third Coast’s RPM Youth Tap Ensemble, is demanding. But for Phillips, every minute is a labor of love. “I’m dedicated to sharing the joy of rhythm and tap with the adult community and passing it on to the next generation,” she said. A new series of adult classes for absolute beginners will be held Saturdays from Jan. 18-Feb. 22 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., and Wednesdays from Jan. 29-March 5, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Third Coast studio, Suite 111, 8055 West Ave. Call 348-8005 for cost and to register. Classes for children and teens also are available. Visit www.thirdcoastrhythm. squarespace.com for details.

Time to ban plastic bags
I
t's time to seal the deal and ban plastic bags. The ubiquitous bags found at grocery stores and other retail outlets may be the height of convenience, but they also damage the environment and cost taxpayers millions of dollars each year to clean up. A ban on plastic bags is gaining momentum under an initiative pushed by San Antonio Councilman Cris Medina. Several City Council members have already indicated they support such a prohibition. Other environmentally conscious cities in the region may wish to follow their example to improve the appearance of their municipalities. There is no question the bags make life easier for shoppers. But they also create pollution because the plastic takes decades or even centuries to disintegrate. The ubiquitous carryalls clog rivers and landfills, get caught in trees and bushes and are a public-health nuisance. In addition to being eyesores, they also pose risks to small children and animals. It takes about 12 million barrels of oil a year to manufacture the millions of bags. That's another environmental cost. And taxpayers also take a hit in the wallet. In San Antonio alone, officials say the city spends about $1.3 million a year cleaning up and recycling plastic bags. Across the state, according to Medina's office, that cost is $25 million. Retailers have voiced concerns about the prohibition, saying it stifles commerce, is hard on customers and crushes innovation. In truth, a ban only means a small period of adjustment for consumers, who will have to remember to bring reusable bags to stores — or purchase them there for a nominal fee. That's not so hard to do. Thousands are already doing the same thing in other Texas cities. For the betterment of the environment and a cleaner future, plastic bags need to be sacked.

“The Happy Handyman is back!” Here it is the first of the year...a new beginning. No matter what was happening in 2013, we have a chance to change that all in 2014. One of those changes could be doing more around the house. And those things you do, don’t have to be huge....they can be small to start. Take for example, pest control. You probably pay to have someone come and spray around your home. It’s not super expensive, but what if you could do that yourself? We used to pay for that service. I don’t anymore. I use Shoo Fly Ant Roach and Spider. I just spray every 60 days around the outside of the house and then the inside of the house. I spray the perimeter, and then inside all the windows and doors. I spray anywhere that a crawly pest could come through. Then I spray under neath the sinks, and toe kicks under the cabinets. What I like about Shoo Fly is that it is safe around children and small pets after it’s dry. And it is dry in 20 minutes. It takes care of ants, roaches, spiders, crazy ants, scorpions, anything that crawls over the Shoo Fly, is dead. I remember the first time I used Shoo Fly ...I was amazed at the dead bugs the next morning. I didn’t think we really had a problem, I was wrong. Shoo Fly sells for under $12. Mice like getting into the house when they want water or warmth. Nothing I have tried works better than Eaton’s Stick-Ems Glue Traps. Rats can take over a attic, and if you are not careful...the whole house. Three years ago I found out that the old fashion Victor traps were the best. Bait it with cheese and a little bacon. Tie it down with a little thread, and bingo ...1 less rat. This may be too much info, but I just wanted you to know how easy it is to do your own pest control, and save a little money in 2014. Now to the email.... Question: We have a pool and during the humid weather and water around the pool the tile is very slick. I am worried one time that someone is going to slip and really hurt themselves. But I like the color of the tile and I don’t want anything that I put on top of the tile to change the color. So is there anything like that? And will the tile be sticky? Or will dirt stick to it? answer: There is a product that big hotel chains use on the marble floors entering their hotel. It’s called Grip On. It is a clear product that works on tile and porcelain tubs to keep them safe when wet. It won’t be sticky or a dirt magnet. It just changes the surface of the tile and tub so that it is not slick when wet.

urrounded by elderly women in wheelchairs, with the turn of a page Gloria Merrell starts reading a book with a big smile on her face. Happiness oozes from Merrell, the founder of Readings from the Heart, a non-profit that sends volunteers to read to those at assisted-living, seniorcitizen and adult-care centers, as well as wounded warriors at military centers and the visually challenged. She started the North Side organization in April 2013 and finalized all the paperwork by October. Now she wants to bring smiles to the faces of others who just might benefit from having a story read to them. “I’m 73 years old and I feel like I’m 53 years," Merrell said. "I feel 20 years younger. I know it sounds hokey, but every day I get up and I feel like it’s worth getting up for.” Reading sessions take place seven days a week for an hour at the various centers and at different times. The readings are planned around volunteers' schedules. When they cannot make it, Merrell fills in. Volunteers are sent all over the city, including to senior communities such as Adante, Patriot Heights, Mystic Park, The Heights, The Forum, Lincoln Heights, Autumn Winds and Kingsley. The second branch of the nonprofit involves a multicultural program for children. They hear stories

about different countries, meet someone who grew up overseas and taste the cuisine of that country. Merrell, a retired educator, wants to continue bringing joy to young ones by allowing them to learn about other cultures. Though Merrell loves reading to anyone who will listen, her heart goes out to children. Partnering with the Children’s Shelter, Merrell made her vision a reality. Each month the kids travel to a different country through books. A special guest who grew up in that country tells stories and also brings a special dish or sweets for the listeners to try. “What better understanding in knowing the world we live in, especially when they’re growing up, to understand the people of the world we live in than by learning now, when they’re little?” Merrell said. She did not expect to come so far in such a short time, but the pace picked up with help from the United Way, including an advertisement for volunteers. Numerous volunteers make Readings from the Heart possible. Merrell said she was surprised by the willingness and dedication of others to read to strangers. “My volunteers are retired teachers, business people, military brides, college students,” Merrell said. Volunteer Susan Chambers reads mostly at assisted-living centers, where residents need extra help and may have cognitive issues. “They all sit there and listen to me, and some of them express their appreciation,” Chambers said. Chambers, 59, works as a qualityassurance manager at Standbio Laboratory in Boerne, but lives in Alta Vista and primarily reads at centers near her home. “I like to read, and I like to hear myself talk. It’s perfect,” Chambers quipped. She mostly chooses stories from the 1930s and 1950s, when the majority of her audience was young. It helps them

relate. Though Powers is not a nurse, she believes she’s making a difference. "I know when I read to them their minds open up,” Chambers said. Merrell interviews each volunteer to see if the organization is a good fit for them. Merrell remains amazed at how passionate they are about reading to others. “It’s overwhelming to me (and) it still kind of sets me back how giving people are with their time,” Merrell said. Someday she hopes to have a brickand-mortar location to hold summer programs for children and provide a place for others to come hear readings. The pair met at Clark High School. Lowe, 22, graduated in 2009 and Taylor, 21, in 2010. They went their separate ways — Lowe to Wheaton University in Chicago where he earned a liberal arts degree after studying philosophy, political science and theology, while Becken went to the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he studied criminal justice. "This is actually the second version of C'est La Vie Bakery," Becken said. "During college, I worked part-time — for a total of about a year— at a couple of local bakeries. I enjoyed the work and I decided to strike a deal with the owners of one of the bakeries to let me sub-lease their space so I could do my own baking. I would then take my products and sell them at the Farmers Market in New Braunfels and at the one at The Rim." He added: "After a while, Eric and I started talking about opening a real brickand-mortar bakery of our own and, thanks to some private funding from an 'Angel Benefactor,' we were able to move forward." One of the driving philosophies behind their business is sharing with others, including a yuletide food drive that involved social media, the friends said. "We started our business on a platform of wanting to give back to the community," Becken said. "The burglary served as a catalyst for making the Holiday Food Drive — which we had already planned on doing — much bigger than we had originally anticipated," Lowe said. The bakery is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more, call 259-8359 or visit cestlaviebakingco.com.

Pulling a St. George In a recent survey of St. George Episcopal School graduates, one alumnus responded, “At my high school, the boys commonly say they pull a ‘St. George’ when it comes to doing well in classes.” For 60 years, the idea of “pulling a St. George “has meant to excel academically, achieve athletically, shine artistically, behave honorably, and serve humbly. St. George is a family community that seeks to provide exceptional academic preparation in an inclusive Christian community that fosters love and respect for God, self, and others. Small class sizes, amazing teachers, and a focused PK-8 environment allow for an accelerated curriculum, athletic and artistic enrichment, and spiritual and leadership development. St. George students are extremely well-prepared. Beginning with a widely renowned early reading program, and progressing into a well-rounded and accelerated course of study that combines traditional methods with innovative approaches, the St. George graduate is a well-prepared, poised, and confident leader with an active mind and a servant’s heart. Hailing from nearly 50 zip codes throughout San Antonio, recent St. George graduates attend 13 different public and private high schools. Over 90% of graduates immediately qualify for advanced and honors classes their freshman year and many continue to maintain leadership roles in the arts and athletics. Faith and reason collide at St. George. There is a living spirituality present within the community of St. George. As a unique child of God, each child develops faith and character through daily worship, and respect and responsibility are recurring themes in the classroom. Students and families experience the love of Christ at St. George and students are challenged to use their heads and hearts. St. George provides a top-notch education in a safe and family-oriented environment. Opening in the fall of 2014, a redesigned internal central courtyard system will provide a safe and natural outdoor setting for students and their families. This secure outdoor space will be surrounded by two brand new, state-of-the-art learning and meeting facilities. At St. George, it’s cool to be smart, it’s fun to be involved, and it’s natural to shine. Over the next 60 years, St. George Episcopal School will continue to be a place where students “love to learn and learn to love!” For more information please call us at 210-342-4263 or visit us at www.saintgeorgeschool.org.

Bounce into fun at Inflatable Wonderland's second location by Jacque Crouse
B
ALCONES HEIGHTS — Inflatable bounce houses, arcade games and a movie theater have proven to be a springboard to success for one locally owned and operated family business. Inflatable Wonderland, a family play place offering bouncy inflatables, arcade games, food and (of course) a destination for birthday parties, recently opened the doors at a second San Antonio location. The new 20,000-square-foot venue is at Wonderland of the Americas mall, 4522 Fredericksburg Road, and debuted in December. The first storefront is in Rolling Oaks Mall on the Northeast Side. Randy Gentry, who manages both sites, said the new place is closer for some customers.
“This store just offers another option for families who like to come and play,” he said. The new location is in a larger space, but the ceilings are a
little lower due to the age of the mall. One other change is an expanded menu at the concession counter. Gentry said Inflatable Wonderland is adding some menu items, both for families playing there and for workers and shoppers in the mall who want a place to grab lunch or dinner. “We will still have pizza, but will also add a lot of other items to have a full-service concession,” he said. So far, the new location has exceeded expectations in terms of parties booked. “We take that as a good sign of what is to come,” Gentry said. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. CASTLE HILLS — When 23-yearold Amber Heard felt drained by another job, she recharged her batteries by opening Salon Volt. “I knew nothing about starting a business, commercial property, accounting, nada,” Brown said. “But I had the drive.” Salon Volt is at 2111 Lockhill Selma Road. Cutting, dyeing and styling hair is what Brown said she knows best. She started helping at her mother’s salon when she was 13, and a year later had her first gig doing hair for the prom. By the time she was 18, she received her stylist’s license and has been working in a salon ever since. If you ask Brown whether she always wanted to open a salon just like her mom, she will tell you no. Though Brown said she was rebellious teenager, the harder she tried to pull away, the closer she actually got to a career in cosmetology. One day when she was 18, Brown was on her way to a different job and burst into tears. “I couldn’t do it anymore, I had to do hair,” Brown said. “It was where I belonged and I’m very thankful to have found that out sooner than later.” Salon Volt offers more than just hair, makeup, facials, manicures, pedicures and waxing, Brown said. It also offers friendship to clients because the staff is passionate and caring, and it shows through their work, Brown said. Stylists at the salon can do hair and makeup for weddings, proms, homecomings and quinceañeras both in and around San Antonio. They also provide services to the clients at NeuroRestorative, another tenant in their

building and a provider of rehabilitation services for people with brain injuries. Brown said they want to make the clients feel “beautiful and special.” Salon Volt is closed Monday, open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and by appointment only on Sunday.

Big Hops Growler Station opens new location on Huebner by Olivier J. Bourgoin
N
ot too long after debuting near Broadway and Loop 410, Big Hops Growler Station has just opened a second watering hole at 11224 Huebner Road, Suite 204. Business partners Rob Martindale and James "Jim" Clements are already working on yet another project to be unveiled in February. But for now, they say they are having fun with the Big Hops Growler Stations. For those not familiar with the original Big Hops, Martindale likes to emphasize what it is not. "We are neither a home-brew hobby store nor a restaurant," he said. And Big Hops isn't a brew pub either, since the partners don't make any of their own beer. Instead, Big Hops is a hybrid "beer-
tasting bar and beer shop" with 30 different craft brews on tap, mostly local, and some seasonal offerings. And what's a growler, you may ask? Basically, it is a self-sealing container that one pours beer into and takes on the go. Customers can buy their own growler ranging in size from a quart to a halfgallon, and pay the "fill price" (which varies depending on the beer). Then take it home and keep it chilled until thirsty. The most commonly accepted version about the origins of the word growler has to do with the invention during the post-Industrial Revolution period in Europe of lids on beer buckets and the sound of the pressurized gas escaping from the pail. A civil engineer by trade, Clements is not quitting his day job but said he enjoys taking care of the administrative
aspect of the business, while Martindale concentrates more on the operation side. They plan to open a gastro-style eatery next month featuring high-end pub food. "We don't serve any type of food at either one of the two existing Big Hops locations, and we don't plan on ever doing so," Martindale said. "(At the new place) everything is going to be chefmade, by hand. But other than that, we are keeping everything status quo and under the Big Hops family umbrella." They are teaming up with experienced chefs Diego Galicia and Rico Torres, who own Mixtli in Olmos Park. Hours at Big Hops No. 2 are noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Big Hops Growler Station has opened another location featuring several San Antonio beers such as Ranger Creek, 5 Stones, Branch Line, Free Tail, Blue Star and the Granary. Austin brands are Circle Beer, 512 Brewery, Rogness, Live Oak and Independence. Photos by Collette Orquiz

he owners of a Northwest Side restaurant that opened not too long ago say they want diners to feel at home. Checo’s Mexican & American Grill is located just west of Interstate 10 at 5999 De Zavala Road, Suite 136. Owners Sergio and Rosana Franco have been in the restaurant business for more than a decade, their daughter Ally Franco-Longoria said. “We are family owned and operated, so everything that we do we put our heart in,” Franco-Longoria said. The goal is to make customers feel at home, she added. The family is from West Texas, but when their daughter entered the University of Texas at San Antonio, her parents thought it was a good opportunity to start a restaurant in San Antonio. The family visited San Antonio on several occasions and had fallen in love
with the city, Franco-Longoria added. Checo’s serves mainly Mexican food with some American choices and seafood, Franco-Longoria said. The restaurant has something for everyone, she added. Her recommendations include the tortilla soup, fajitas and homemade flan.

he market for houses in San Antonio continues to get tighter as inventory of houses available for sale shrank to 4.2 months supply, the lowest it has been since December 2006.
A housing boom in 2005 and 2006 saw builders trying to keep up with demand in the San Antonio area, but fallout from a 2008 meltdown of the economy pushed the number of houses for sale up, slowed building and depressed property values. The San Antonio Board of Realtors reported that in the first 11 months of 2013, there have been 21,607 home sales in the area, a 17 percent increase over the same period in 2012 and the highest since 2007. A SABOR analysis of data from the Multiple Listing Service found the average year-to-date median average price for single family housing in the area was up 7 percent to $207,650 and the median rose 6 percent to $170,200 for 2013 through November. For the month of November 2013 compared to the same month in 2012, the average price rose 10 percent to $214,677 and the median price was up 6 percent to $172,100. Total sales for November were up slightly to 1,634, according to SABOR. The organization points to studies showing San Antonio as one of the tops in job creation and retention as reasons for
the continued housing-market recovery. Median prices were fairly flat or down in the residential areas inside Loop 1604 from Interstate 10 to Blanco Road, according to data gathered from the Texas Market Trends Report. In the 78213 ZIP code, the median sold price in November dipped 30 percent to $91,000 and the number of closed sales for the month dropped to 17 from 21 in November 2012.
