Making mistakes and fixing them

W

e’re only human here at LOCAL Community News, and just like everybody else we make mistakes. When that happens, believe me, we feel upset. Not only because our error is out there for everyone to see in black and white, but because we’ve let down our readers. The editors, writers, designers and proofreaders at LOCAL take great pains to check every story, every photo caption, every news brief and every calendar item to ensure they are factual. But when you process hundreds of

Put the brakes on wasteful toll roads

E

ven though residents for years have said no to toll roads and the double-dipping taxation they represent, it seems local officials are determined to stick their hands into our wallets by creating these wasteful projects on the North Side.

The Texas Department of Transportation recently unveiled a plan to allocate about $825 million to fund expansions of Interstate 10, U.S. 281 and Loop 1604. Included is the transformation of 281 into a four-lane tolled expressway from Stone Oak Boulevard to the Bexar-Comal county line, as well as tolled connector ramps at the I-10/1604 interchange. Construction should start by early 2015. Highway officials euphemistically proclaim the new toll roads are different from traditional ones because they will have managed lanes —

thousands — or even millions — of words, dates, times and concepts day in and day out, year-round, the law of probability indicates that something wrong is going to slip through sooner or later. We try our best to make sure the newspaper is free of errors. But when a mistake is discovered, we react very quickly, verifying that we committed a gaffe and then correcting the problem the very next issue. During my tenure here since the autumn of 2012, we have run only a few corrections. Each one cut me as deeply as a knife, and that’s because I hate making mistakes. And I don’t want to disappoint readers and our sources. But I also know we have to own up to the errors when they happen and fix them as soon as possible. Our staff has made a pledge to our readers: To provide the most factual data possible. The community relies on us to deliver correct information, and if our credibility is compromised then the trust of our readers is diminished. And while we continually strive for perfection, it is likely we occasionally motorists in single-occupant cars will have to pay, but people in car pools and using mass transit won't. Sadly, several local elected officials cheered the announcement, saying the tollways are needed to handle the area's continued growth, which is expected to skyrocket to 3.4 million by 2040. Don't these officials get it? Residents already fork over enough to the state for drivers' licenses, plates, registration and other fees that create and maintain roadways. Now we're going to have to pay for the "privilege" of driving on roads our taxes already built? Haven't these bureaucrats already noticed that traffic isn't exactly zipping up and down Texas 130, the multimilliondollar tollway boondoggle that was supposed to relieve heavy traffic on Interstate 35 from San Antonio to Austin? And now they want to do this to other major thoroughfares? A road that we pay taxes to construct is a highway or a "free"way — not a tollway. Or it shouldn't be. There is a reason why San Antonio is the largest city in Texas without a toll system — because the people don't want one and have repeatedly said so. Even worse, the new plans call for local tax monies to be used for the projects, including a new $10 hike for vehicle registration and a cut of local sales taxes called the Advanced Transportation District sales tax. To some, this

will stumble no matter how hard we try. All I can ask is that readers remember “to err is human, to forgive, divine.”

represents almost triple taxation. According to Terri Hall, a longtime opponent of local toll roads, the new costs mean commuters may have to pay 17 cents up to 50 cents a mile to travel. Over 10 miles, that's $20-$50 a week or $1,000-$2,000 annually. This is just another tax burden promoted by politicians and bureaucrats who think they know what's best for the rest of us. Even worse, the frontage lanes to these toll roads are surely going to become clogged as motorists routinely divert off the highway to avoid more taxation — er, tolls. Aren't tollroads supposed to alleviate congestion? Not in this case. Taxpayers need to let our elected leaders know — again — that it's time to put the brakes on plans to cover the North Side in toll roads that will only waste money and cause bottlenecks.

Why Cisneros Airport failed to fly by susan yerkes

W

hat’s in a name? Sometimes, more than you bargained for. That’s the lesson folks at the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce learned when they launched a short-lived campaign to rename San Antonio International Airport for former Mayor Henry Cisneros. The concept failed to take wing. Within a week, the plan was put “on hold.” For now, that is a wise move. Although many supported the idea after Hispanic Chamber Chairwoman Patricia Stout announced the campaign to rename the airport at the group’s annual gala, a

chorus of Cisneros-bashers leapt into the fray on talk radio and myriad blogs, threatening to create a controversy. And then the prospective honoree himself put the kibosh on the plan. “I don’t want to draw the community into further contentiousness,” Cisneros wrote in a thanks-but-no-thanks letter to Chamber leaders, citing his ongoing involvement with various city projects (including airport expansion) and national efforts to pass immigration reform. He also believes that landmarks should bear the monikers of people who have died. But the Lila Cockrell Theater, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium, Cyndi Taylor Krier Juvenile Correctional Treatment Center, Howard Peak Greenway Trails System, Phil Hardberger Park and Paul Elizondo Tower indicate San Antonio civic leaders like to honor their peers while they’re still standing. In fact, some folks first floated the Cisneros Airport idea decades ago. “A group of us who volunteered for Henry’s campaigns back when he was mayor talked about naming the airport for him way back then,” one longtime Cisneros supporter told me when the flak

about the recent initiative started to fly. Aside from the controversy it might generate, the airport-naming idea also has practical drawbacks in terms of civic strategy. On the one hand, there are plenty of airports named for people, including New York’s LaGuardia and JFK, D.C.’s Reagan National, California’s celebrity cluster (John Wayne and Bob Hope airports), New Orleans’ Louis Armstrong Airport, and Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport and Bush Intercontinental. But while San Antonio’s airport has expanded impressively in recent years, this city is still, alas, not one of the country’s high-profile “hub” destinations. It’s a connector airport, lacking the passenger traffic that makes the big hubs household names. “With an airport our size, people from other places may not associate a person’s name with the city. I’m all for naming something in town for Henry, but we need to keep our city’s name out there on the airport,” one longtime aviation industry leader told me. If not the airport, what would be an apt edifice to bear Cisneros’ name? The idea is not going away. And despite the recent announcement

of a Henry Cisneros Center for New Americans on the West Side, the push to name another, larger civic venue for Cisneros is likely to continue. “We think Henry is very deserving. Remember too, that he has served as our Hispanic Chamber chair. I believe it is time he is recognized like other mayors and county leaders,” Stout told me. “We respect Henry’s wishes, and we are putting this on hold,” added Chamber CEO Ramiro Cavazos. “But we will still move forward, and work with other community leaders, to do something.” The downtown San Antonio Public Library, famously designed by brilliant Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, has come up several times as a place to name in Cisneros’ honor. The Alamodome seems like a good fit to me, since it was one of Cisneros’ major initiatives. Bottom line: San Antonio has a lot of venues. Somewhere out there, one is waiting for Cisneros’ name. Homeless continues from pg. 01

District's effort aimed at providing stability for kids by kate hunger

T

he large number of homeless students in the Northside Independent School District has educators rallying to ensure safety-net programs are in place that keep the kids in school.

Economic hardship and improved identification methods contribute to the increase, said Marta Martinez, coordinator of the Connections Program, which serves homeless students in NISD under federal law. “We do have families who are struggling and we do have families in shelters and motels with high mobility,” Martinez said. “Every district has its unique program or ways of approaching and trying to assist all the students identified.”

As of mid-February, 1,140 students had been identified as homeless in the district so far this school year, Martinez said. The current total does not yet include students receiving services at shelters. They will be included later in the year, she added. In the 2012-13 school year, 2,077 students were identified as homeless in NISD, compared to 1,971 in 2011-12 and 1,499 in 2010-11, according to Martinez. NISD’s enrollment is almost 101,500 students, spread among 115 campuses. Students and their families are considered homeless under the law if they live in shelters, temporarily “doubled up” with relatives or friends, or in motels, hotels or campgrounds.

we do have families who are struggling Marta Martinez, NISD Connections Program

Most of the homeless students attending schools in NISD are in doubled-up situations. Living with family does not equate to homelessness, Martinez said. Those arrangements sometimes are made for convenience or to provide care for an elderly parent, for example. “That’s very different from a family losing their housing and not being able to pay their rent that month,” she said. “A lot of parents do not seek the emergency shelters. They will first seek assistance through relatives or friends and we see them moving quite frequently. Those moves do impact the children’s education.” Not having a permanent residence creates a number of barriers for students, from obtaining school and immunization records to completing enrollment, to transportation to and from school. Federal law requires public schools to provide services to homeless students and to remove barriers to receiving an education. Each campus must have a staff member trained in the requirements and responsibilities of the law regarding the education of homeless students. Another provision of the McKinneyVento Homeless Education Assistance

Improvements Act protects the rights of students to continue attending their school of origin even if they move outside the campus’ boundaries during a school year. The Connections program also provides VIA Metropolitan Transit Authority bus passes for students, as well as assistance with enrollment, school supplies and backpacks, clothing and uniforms if required, and referrals to social-service agencies for additional resources and assistance. Homelessness “can impact the child’s sense of stability, self-confidence, the friendships they are able to make and keep,” said Deborah Healy, director of NISD’s Guidance and Counseling Department, of which Connections is a part. “Because of McKinney-Vento, we are able to help provide that stability so that they are not in that situation, so they can stay in that school of origin, so they are not having to change teachers, change friends.” Martinez said the Connections program is expanding its focus to include assisting seniors with any academic needs to make sure they are able to finish school. Preliminary numbers classify 100,635102,579 Texas children as homeless in the 2012-13 school year, said Barbara

Wand James, project director of the Texas Homeless Education Office at the University of Texas at Austin, which provides training on the homeless-education law to school districts. In the 2011-12 school year, 1,168,354 students were identified as homeless nationally, according to figures released in October by the National Center for Homeless Education. James said the state and national numbers are known to be an undercount and the real numbers are higher. “We are still seeing wages stagnant, we are seeing a lot of people who are homeless working, but they are making minimum wage,” she said. “We are seeing working families who are having to move in with relatives or move into shelters.” In addition to low-wage jobs, families also

are being squeezed out of a shrinking pool of affordable housing by surging rents in cities such as Austin, where she said a twobedroom, two-bath apartment can go for $950 to $1,100 a month, and in small cities and towns where rents are skyrocketing in response to the huge influx of workers in the Eagle Ford shale region. Homelessness knows no geographic boundaries, she said. “It’s everywhere now,” James said. NISD’s Healy urged families who need help to contact their school counselors first. The program and department work with a number of agencies to help meet a wide range of needs, she said. If you would like to help, contact the NISD Partnerships Office at 397-8599 or visit http://nisd.net/nef/donate.

HAVANO PARK — City officials are modifying their stance on business signs for a proposed shopping development coming to town. The parcel is along Loop 1604 near Northwest Military Highway, but changes to the rules are required because of the city's strict policy on signage, officials said. If all goes as planned, Denton Communities will be allowed to put up signs attracting customers along the busy stretches of roadway while still adhering to Shavano Park’s desire to maintain uniformity — a look and feel unique to the city. “They are starting to develop that

area and we just want to make sure it’s done the right way," said Mayor A. David Marne. "It’s easier to put up the right sign first than put up the wrong sign, take down the wrong sign and then put up the right sign.” The city is working with Denton Communities on the development's signage, said City Manager Bill Hill. “We’ve entered into a partnership with Denton referencing some signage where the city would agree to modify its signage ordinance,” Hill said. Shavano Park adheres to its rules and regulations on its signs, most of which are designed as stone monuments, according to Hill. Denton's request falls under an Urban Corridor Signage application. Denton Communities likely will be allowed to use a design that catches the eye of potential patrons, but it will still reflect community standards, officials said. “But that’s the only exception that’s made in the general ordinance as it stands now,” Hill said. The City Council approved

Signs continues from pg. 10 modifications to the sign ordinance in December that allow signs on large poles 45 feet tall and 21 feet wide with placards on the front. “In order to enable the development to be commercially favorably to Shavano Park, we would have to allow them to put signage to attract customers,” Hill said. According to Hill, the city has a very detailed application process with several requirements for any business that wants to request putting up a sign in Shavano Park. Denton’s application for the property along Loop 1604 was reviewed by the city’s Planning and Zoning Committee, which held public hearings and

received no negative comments from residents or other property owners. The change to the ordinance states an applicant must have more than 50 acres to apply, so right now the ordinance only applies to Denton Communities and is limited to the 1604 corridor. The signage is covered for 20 years and includes terms for extensions and a signage replacement-proposed schedule clause. Denton has provided technical drawings of the proposed signs. The mayor and council like what they have seen so far and the council is expected to approve the application, officials said. “The signs really look good (from the mockup),” Marne said. “You drive through some of the other suburban cities and you see all of these signs and they all look different and they are all haphazard. There’s a feel — it’s hard to put this into words — but you know when you’re in Shavano Park.” The mayor said they want to make sure people always know when they’re in Shavano Park. “We are making rules to ensure that they (the signs) look good now and that they’ll always look good,” Marne said.

s technology advances, the San Antonio Public Library is writing the book on how to keep readers plugged in and connected — whether patrons are looking to check out a title or use one of the online services. North Side patrons readily can find these resources at their local branch libraries. Although some readers may not be aware of all the new services, the library has been offering online access for years, according to Ignacio Albarracin, the digital services coordinator for the library system. As early as 2001, the library system began providing access to e-books — the electronic, non-paper version of a book — and it has been adding other services as they become available. “We are constantly looking for new products and services out there that enable us to deliver products and services that people want in the formats they prefer,” Albarracin said. Whether for entertainment or learning, the library system offers multiple ways to download movies, music, audiobooks and e-books. Patrons can also access databases filled with information on history, culture, genealogy, health and medicine, and general research and science. Of course, the library still has oldfashioned print books and periodicals. Two databases, American Ancestors and Ancestry Library, are available only for use inside the library, but all others can be accessed from any Internet-enabled device at any time. The library also recently introduced an online international book club featuring immediate access to an e-book without holds or readers being placed on a waiting list. This model allows patrons to share the experience of reading a particular e-book with other readers across the planet, officials said. As a part of the Big Library Read program, library cardholders can download the book chosen by the club, with a lending period of up to three weeks. “It reminds people that public libraries, especially in this new digital era,

March 2014

remain uniquely positioned to connect them to new ideas that can positively shape their lives,” Albarracin said. The recent featured selection is “Keys to the Kitchen” by Aida Mollenkamp. "Knowledge is power" could be the unofficial motto of those who keep the city's Central Library and 25 branches up and running, officials said — especially in the digital age. With so much information available on a multitude of subjects, readers need assistance filtering the different channels to get the details they seek, Albarracin said. “The community needs public libraries to help them curate this information so that they can more quickly and easily understand the key facts, theories, debates and trends in the world around them,” Albarracin said. Other services the library provides include free tutoring at Tutor.com and access to academic and practice tests with Learning Express Library, both of which offer virtual interaction. The sites are free to library cardholders. On top of providing as many services to patrons as possible, the library system is constantly looking for solutions to help readers who want to succeed in the workforce or

enhance their lives, officials said. The library's website is undergoing a redesign so it can be displayed on any size screen, and mobile applications are being developed for easy access on smartphones and tablets. Libraries on the North Side include the Cody Branch Library, 11441 Vance Jackson Road, and the Westfall Branch Library, 6111 Rosedale Court. For more information on available services, visit http://www.mysapl.org/services.aspx. Meanwhile, on the South Side, a new kind of bookless library has taken shape. Called BiblioTech, it is a public digital library at 3505 Pleasanton Road and offers digital services, e-readers, computer training and more. It is operated by Bexar County.

A hybrid of artistic creativity and athletic ability has MacArthur High School skateboarders getting more than just air. Working with the school’s art club, the MacArthur Skate Club recently displayed their skateboard decks at the Institute of Texan Cultures as part of what officials are calling a unique traveling Smithsonian exhibit, “Ramp It Up!” Reagan Beres, supervisor of the skate club, said the ITC approached her after they searched online for high school skate clubs and stumbled upon MacArthur.

skateboarding has all of that,” Beres said. Feeling very fortunate, a handful of the skate and art club students had the opportunity to showcase their handpainted skateboards and photos. Brett Zettner, Cody Smith, Rye Beres and Seth Arzola-Boyson number among the skate club members featured at the exhibit. Zettner had free rein on the designs he featured. “I guess I’m a little more driven artistically, and she chose me to get to choose my first two boards,” Zetter said. “So I pursued the kill.” Both Zettner and Smith had skate decks shown at ITC, while Rye Beres had a deck and a video, and ArzolaBoyson exhibited photographs. All of the students agreed the exhibit presented them with a great opportunity. “It felt great. People saw what we could do, and not just be dirtbags,” Beres said. The exhibit ran from Nov. 2 to Jan. 5, and can be viewed online at http://www. texancultures.com/ramp_it_up_texas_style/.

ising from the ashes of a bankrupt opera, a smaller, more intimate company has started singing its way into the hearts of audiences one note at a time. When the recession led San Antonio Opera to file for bankruptcy after 16 seasons, founder and general director, Mark Richter, had to find another way to continue cultivating an audience. Rather than focusing on large, grand productions, Richter decided to showcase pieces meant for smaller stages under the name Opera Piccola — with performances in English that are meant to entice nonopera fans as well as traditionalists. “It’s been a very tough time for the arts, but in the surge of all this has been smaller companies coming up with unique, innovative stagings,” Richter said. San Antonio Opera was not the only company to end before its time; Richter said 10 percent to 15 percent of the country’s opera houses had to close shop, or drastically downsize. Opera Piccola was founded in 2012. Richter said the nonprofit operates under an extremely tight budget. Opera Piccola is an “intimate opera,” so-called because of the small

cast and because the shows are staged in the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, which is a lot cozier than its neighbor The Majestic Theatre. “The experience that you get when you have an intimate opera is very personal, very close, because actually you’re only a stone's throw away from the stage,” Richter said. The opera singers are professionals from all over the world and the orchestra, though not large, is mostly made up of professional symphonic musicians. Directing the music is Kristin Roach and Cynthia Stokes is the stage director. Professional opera singers take the leads, while minor roles are shared among emerging artists to give them more stage experience. Dress rehearsals are open to students to encourage their interest in the art. Opera Piccola members say they are fortunate to perform at the Empire Theatre, 226 N. St. Mary's St., because of its central location downtown in a revitalized area that includes art and tourism. “We want to be a part of that renaissance that’s happening in San Antonio,” Richter said. “(We) hope to find our place in this exciting time.” Stokes has been directing plays since she was a child in her backyard, and wants to debunk certain myths about opera. “What we’re trying to do is get the stuffiness out of opera and make it something that everyone can enjoy,” Stokes said. Tuxedos are not a requirement at Opera Piccola, and members say ticket prices are affordable. Richter added they have done many things differently to

the programs important to Gallagher is improving the Northeast Senior MultiService Center, located at 4355 Center Gate. The renovations to the center are expected to be completed in 2015. “The center is an important project,” Gallagher said. “When it is completed, it is something that will not only benefit the citizens of District 10, but also will help out people in District 2 and District 9.” In addition, more improvements are coming in the fall to Comanche Lookout Park, where about $700,000 will pay for additional parking, exercise equipment and trails in the shadow of the park’s landmark tower. Before filling the council slot, Gallagher sat on numerous boards and committees, including posts for the city of San Antonio such as the Neighborhood Code Enforcement Task Force and the Northeast Corridor Revitalization Steering Committee. “There were several reasons why I did not want to just serve these three months, but also to seek re-election was to make sure that I want to continue what Councilman Soules did regarding the funds from the 2012 bond program,” Gallagher said. “He did a lot of work to improve the green spaces in our district, as well as to improve

the parks and libraries in the area.” While serving in the Air Force, Gallagher was the senior White House social aide for President Ronald Reagan, the media relations director for Army Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf during Operation Desert Storm, and the director of public affairs for United States Air Forces Europe. He also served as the director of public affairs for the Air Force’s largest command, the Air Combat Command. His final post before retirement was at the Pentagon, where he was the special assistant for public affairs to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “Serving has been just a big part of my career,” Gallagher said.

“The Happy Handyman is back!” There are so many different paint removers on the market. Most of them you wouldn’t even dream of using them inside the house. Even outside the caustic fumes are bad. A few years ago I came across a stripper with the strangest name. Soy Gel...and the inventor...was a little different too! HA. But at the booth I was amazed at the ability of Soy Gel, and the fact that it had NO odor was unbelievable. And the reps that were demonstrating the Soy Gel didn’t even have on gloves. I like to test first when I am going to strip a finish and to do that I put Soy Gel on in a small area and wait. I go back a few hours later and check and see if the Soy Gel is through working. If you can take your finger and go through all the coats of paint and see wood, you are done. If not, put on a little more Soy Gel and wait a few hours more. Then you know how long it is going to take to do the entire project. I know a few strippers that will work faster, but can you do it inside the house? Probably not. I like to tell people put on the Soy Gel, go to dinner and or a movie, and then come home to a job done. All you have to do after that is take a wet sponge and wipe off the stripper. That stops all action. Wipe dry and that’s it! Most strippers will require that you also sand when the stripping is complete. Not Soy Gel. Once you are through stripping you are ready to apply the next finish. Soy Gel will strip off paint, varnish, urethane, polyurethane, enamels, sealers, and many other finishes, just not stain. Soy Gel is safe, low odor, made from 100% American grown soy beans. If you have a big job, you can scrap off the Soy Gel, put it in a paint can, stir it up and re-use it. So it’s very reasonable. It comes in quarts and gallons. So for your next project, take a look at Soy Gel.

now to the email.... Question: I have 2 girls at home and they have long hair. I am always trying to clean out the drain of the shower. How do I keep a drain running clear? answer: There is a product called Drain Out. It’s a crystal. Pour 2 tablespoons down the drain and listen, the Drain Out doesn’t start working until it hits water. And then boy does it do a great job at eating through hair and soap scum. Safe to use in any type of sink or tub. It just will not work in standing water. Question: I getting ready to use my lawn mower. I had a heck of a time trying to start it last year and I was wondering if you had any secret to a easier start this spring? I finally had to take it to a lawn mower shop and have them fix it.

answer: Use the product I do, Start Your Engines. Just put it in the gas tank of any small engine. Saved me thousands one year using it in a wet jet at the lake. Question: I have a porcelain sink that is dull and has a dark ring around the base. Do I need a new sink? Or is there any way to restore the shine? answer: Ok lets hope that the dull sink is just because it has lime buildup on it. So use the Delete Germ and a scrubby sponge and start cleaning. Rinse thoroughly.

Electronic medical records coming to SA by travis e. poling

L

ogging on to the computer to check personal medical records could become as commonplace as checking your bank account or a credit score in the near future. The idea being put in place by Healthcare Access San Antonio is one executives say will not only place health knowledge in the hands of patients, but also save lives and money.

Working with hospital systems and physician practices, the nonprofit organization is compiling thousands of medical records available only to the patient and medical providers with patient permission. “If you’re in Dallas or Houston and in a car wreck, the emergency physician needs to see your records,” said Kimberly Harris, who heads marketing and business development for HASA. Harris likens it to

going to France on vacation and using a bank card from back home to get money. The initiative is one of several around the country to create a health-information exchange. That includes medical records from hospitals and doctors that could be accessed from anywhere as needed by the patient, and a personal health record that could include test results, medications and doctor and insurance information. The Baptist Health System, Methodist Healthcare System, Christus Santa Rosa Health System, Nix Health System and University Health System have all provided secure patient records to HASA. Those 600,000 patient records eventually will be connected to a statewide network, said Gijs Van Oort, CEO of HASA. In all, more than 1,900 doctors and 83 hospitals in the region have signed on, according to HASA. It’s all part of a federal effort to connect health care providers across the state and in neighboring states. Because of the size of Texas, the state has opted to give the task to regional groups such as HASA. All are overseen by the Texas Health Services Authority. HASA received federal funds in 2010 to launch the initiative in Bexar and 22 surrounding counties.

March 2014

Like credit reports, the patient records allow people to check their data for accuracy. “A lot of people simply want to see their record (at the doctor’s office or hospital) and sometimes find the information is not correct,” Van Oort said. It also is a way to educate the patient, track data for chronic diseases and “gives them more purpose to take action,” he added. While larger medical groups, which mostly are using advanced electronic record-keeping systems, have seen the value of the health-information exchange idea, it has been a harder sell to doctors in solo practice, Van Oort said. The advantage for solo doctors is they can easily get access to their patients and patient records without so much paper changing hands or long waits. What’s more, front-office staff can readily call up insurance and billing data without seeing the patient’s medical records, he said. Dr. Ramone Figueroa, who heads technology initiatives for San Antoniobased medical group and insurer WellMed, said all the clinics in the WellMed family will soon be on one system that can help generate reports

on who needs a mammogram or some other type of preventive care. The clinics, which serve about 45,000 senior citizens in the San Antonio area and 55,000 in Austin, El Paso, Corpus Christi, the Rio Grande Valley and parts of Florida, once had 11 different electronic medical record systems. In the works for WellMed is a portal where patients can securely check their test results, past reports and even make an appointment. Figueroa said he understands the need for the systems to talk to one another, even outside the clinics. Van Oort said smaller hospitals sending patients for additional specialty care in San Antonio also will benefit from the records exchange. For example, a hospital transferring a patient from Del Rio to San Antonio by helicopter or ambulance had to put the paper records with the patient for transport. Under the HASA system, the San Antonio hospital can search records electronically and be ready; meanwhile, the doctor back home can access the San Antonio records for follow-up care. Harris said future steps include health-provider access, as needed, to

Pediatricians find challenges and many rewards by ron aaron eisenberg

rom educating parents about whether children need antibiotics to protecting youngsters from cancer, today’s pediatricians say their jobs keep them busy — but also feeling rewarded.

“I love my job," said pediatrician Ryan Van Ramshorst. "I just love going to work every day knowing I’m making an impact on children and their families.” One of the biggest challenges faced today by pediatricians is helping parents understand when antibiotics should be used. He and his colleagues prescribe them only when truly needed, Van Ramshorst said. According to the latest research

from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, evidence indicates that "unnecessary antibiotics can be harmful by promoting resistant organisms in (a) child and the community." Dr. Leah Jacobson said at her practice, Through the Years Pediatrics, she often tries to discuss with families when it's right to take antibiotics. “We consciously try to limit prescribing antibiotics. Pediatricians continues from pg. 23 the tendency was to offer an antibiotic whenever a parent requested one for their children,” said Jacobson, a boardcertified pediatrician and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. According to the academy, about 10 million antibiotic prescriptions are written every year for upper respiratory infections that likely won't improve from antibiotic use. Plus, unnecessary antibiotic use puts children at risk of side effects or a potential allergy to the medications, and increases the risk of antibiotic resistance by bacteria, AAP researchers said. Another issue Jacobson has seen is parents choosing not to vaccinate their children. “One of the first things we do with new patients is discuss vaccinations with their parents,” said Jacobson, a mother of three who serves on the Bexar County Medical Society board of directors. “If a parent says they do not want their children vaccinated, we politely tell them our practice is not for them and encourage them to seek out another pediatrician.” She added, “We are seeing diseases in children we thought we wouldn’t see again, like pertussis – whooping cough." That disease is largely preventable with the vaccination DTaP — a three-in-one vaccine protecting against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, physicians say. According to the CDC, children

who haven't received DTaP vaccines are at least eight times more likely to get pertussis than children who received all five recommended doses of DTaP. Pediatricians also recommend the vaccine that fights the human papillomavirus, or HPV, which causes several cancers including cervical cancer in girls and genital warts in boys, for children 11 and 12 years of age. The HPV vaccine was embroiled in a political battle in Texas a couple of years ago when Gov. Rick Perry wanted all children in the state to be vaccinated. That flap led some parents to refuse the vaccine, known to many as Gardasil. “We need to do better getting more girls and boys vaccinated with HPV because that will save lives," Van Ramshorst said, The CDC reports cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women around the world. In the United States, about 12,000 women get cervical cancer every year and some 4,000 are expected to die from it. According to HealthGrades.com, there are an estimated 633 pediatricians within 25 miles of downtown San Antonio. So how does a parent pick one? Experts suggest talking to friends and neighbors for recommendations on a pediatrician. Suggestions include looking for pediatricians whose office staff seems caring, welcoming and professional. For more information on pediatricians and children’s medical care, visit the American Academy of Pediatrics website at www.aap.org.

San Antonio pediatricians say they enjoy treating youngsters and fostering healthy families, as well as keeping up to date with new research — including advising parents to limit antibiotics so that so-called 'super bugs' are kept in check. Photo by Sara Sudhoff

Cedar pollen nothing to sneeze at, but there are solutions by gianna rendon

S

an Antonians gasping for relief whenever cedar season is in full bloom may be glad to know there are some remedies for their misery.

Michael Bimler, a San Antonio College student and Hollywood Park resident, suffers from cedar and other pollen allergies. “The cedar is ridiculous,” Bimler said. “It puts me in bed for two or three days if it’s really bad outside.” The so-called mountaincedar pollen season usually lasts from December through February. Allergists report this year has been one of the worst in about two decades, and Bimler agreed. He typically uses overthe-counter medications such as Zyrtec and a nasal spray. There are various ways an allergy sufferer can get some aid during the so-called "cedar fever" season. Dr. Edward Brooks, from the division of immunology and infectious disease in the department of pediatrics at the University of Texas Health

MEDICAL HEALTH CARE Science Center at San Antonio, said there are three main allergytreatment approaches: avoidance, medications and allergy shots. If you are allergic to animal dander, then you can just avoid the animal but it’s more complicated with cedar and other pollens, many of them airborne. “There’s not a whole lot you can do (to avoid cedar) besides not going outside,” Brooks said. Sufferers can keep windows closed on days when the pollen count is high, Brooks said. If you have allergies, Brooks also suggested washing your face when you come inside, and taking a shower before you go to sleep to get rid of pollen.

The most effective medications are topical intranasal corticosteroids, Brooks said. They are prescription nasal sprays that relieve a stuffy nose and other nasal problems. Since they are steroids, there might be side effects, which can

Dental Technology for 2014 The importance of dental health has been diminished by insurance companies who have separated the mouth from the rest of the body. Dr. Bernard Rust and Dr. Joseph Perry’s main goals are to educate our patients on the role good dental health has on the entire body. Whether you have all your teeth, no teeth or you are somewhere in between, it’s never too late to achieve good dental health and have a beautiful and confident smile. Advances in dentistry over the last 5-10 years have been incredible. We have made great strides in implant and denture technology as well as new crown and bridge materials, digital impressions for crown, bridge and Invisalign® treatment and non-surgical periodontal (gum) treatment. Dr. Rust has been providing life changing dentistry for over 35 years, the last 16 of those here in North Central San Antonio. He specializes in full mouth reconstruction, cosmetic crown and bridge work and Invisalign® invisible braces. Dr. Rust was in the very first group of general dentists certified to provide Invisalign® treatment. Although Invisalign® has been available for over 13 years, many patients are unfamiliar with the procedure. Invisalign® can treat almost any patient ages 12 and up. Straight teeth are not just a cosmetic concern. Crowded teeth are difficult to clean and can result in periodontal issues as well as problems with decay. Invisalign® can treat overcrowding as well as large spacing, crossbite, overbite and underbite. All this with no messy impressions!

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Emergency Center - Alon offers emergency services 24 hours a day, seven days a week - close to home. Our physicians handle all types of emergencies from chest pain to stroke symptoms and high blood pressure to general children’s emergencies. Dr. Perry has recently moved to San Antonio from Beeville, TX where he practiced for over 30 years. Dr. Perry brings his expertise in dentures and denture stabilization and to our San Antonio office. Dr. Perry made the choice 25 years ago to concentrate his dental practice on assisting people challenged by tooth loss. He is passionate

11503 northwest military Highway, Suite 122 San Antonio, Texas 78230

about helping patients gain a new lease on life with custom dentures. For those who have problems with their lower denture, 3M™ mini implants can provide the stabilization that you’ve been missing. These implants are less expensive than traditional implants and many times the existing denture can be modified to accommodate the implants. In most cases the lower denture can be “snapped” in immediately following placement providing instant stability. For patients wearing full upper and lower dentures, we can restore the facial look you once had, where a normal denture just replaces the teeth. The new technique is a reconstruction of the facial appearance you may have lost, as the supporting facial bones dissolved away! Then we recreate a harmonious bite relationship that matches your new and more youthful appearance. This exciting new denture technology has revolutionized our industry and is changing the way patients and dentists feel about dentures. Eat, speak and laugh with confidence. To schedule a complimentary consultation for invisalign® or dentures, call our office at 210-499-4746. We are located at 13341 San Pedro Avenue at the corner of Bitters and Hwy 281. Allergies continues from pg. 26 occur after using an excessive amount, Brooks said. There are other medications an allergy sufferer can use, such as antihistamines, which relieve itching and sneezing; medications such as Singulair can help with congestion. Avoid over-the-counter nose sprays, Brooks said, because it is easy to get addicted to them. Allergy shots are a way to help patients become desensitized so they no longer react to allergens, Brooks said. It is the only cure for allergens; the shots are available through allergists. Mike Anderson, a pharmacist and the owner of Shavano Park Wellness Pharmacy at 14603 Huebner Road, offers traditional prescription services as well as natural homeopathic products for allergy sufferers. Anderson sells Cedar X, which helps with cedar-allergy symptoms such as congestion. It is an oil that is inhaled. The pharmacy also offers relief from other spring allergies with Spring

Allergy Mix, a drop applied under the tongue that relieves congestion, itchy eyes, tickling throat and sneezing. The natural products have no additives, chemicals or dyes in them, Anderson said. “They are very safe,” he added. There are other ways to combat allergies that do not require a visit to the store. “The reason why you have allergies is basically because you have some deficiency in your immune system,” Anderson said. “So your body can’t fight off whether it’s a cold or a particular allergen or pollen or whatever it is. So if you improve the function of your immune system, then you can reduce your exposure to those things and the severity with which they affect you.” Increasing your intake of vitamins C and D will help strengthen an immune system, Anderson said. A good source of vitamin C comes from eating citrus fruits and Vitamin D from exposure to the sun, Anderson said. Anderson has a wellness radio show on WOAI 1200 AM called “Wellness Matters” from 3 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Farm to Juice opens second location at The Elms by collette orquiz

R

oughly 600 apples, 100 pounds of carrots and plenty of other fruits and vegetables meet their maker in a cold-press juicer every day at Farm to Juice. Owners Robert Baughn and his wife, Lisa, started offering fresh juices on the North Side a little more than a year ago, touting the health benefits. Farm to Juice recently opened a second location at 11814 Wurzbach Road in The Elms shopping center after the Baughns switched their domestic juicing machines to a $21,000 commercial model at their original location, 18730 Stone Oak Parkway. “We were using the small, residential juicer and it’s really like Starbucks trying to use a Mr. Coffee Maker — you simply can’t keep up,” Robert Baughn said. “We basically went from being able to produce

one gallon an hour to 20 gallons an hour.” Baughn said all of the juicing is done at the Stone Oak shop and transported to The Elms every morning. They restock when necessary. The stores feature 14 cold-pressed juices, each containing a variety of fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs. The juices are named according to content and how they benefit consumers, with names such as Memory, Refresh and Powerhouse. Each location also has a special pick of the day, which involves choosing a juice at random and selling it for a reduced price of $5. Whether customers are looking to drop a few pounds or clean their system, Farm to Juice offers three- and fiveday cleanses, Baughn said. They also make raw young coconut yogurt, water

kefir and almond and cashew milks. “More and more people are becoming aware of their health conditions and they are starting to look more to other alternatives,” Robert Baughn said. Hint: Be sure to try Lisa’s Remix, named after the co-owner. It is a combination of ginger, green apple, lemon, pear and pineapple. Farm to Juice is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and closed Sunday.

January home sales in SA improve on last year’s start Prices climb as inventories tighten in North Side neighborhoods by Travis e. poling

S

an Antonio home sales stayed strong in the first month of the new year on the heels of the best year of sales since 2006. Even in a month when sales tend to be slow, January saw a total of 1,348 sales in the area, up 7 percent from January 2013. The data compiled by the San Antonio Board of Realtors from Multiple Listing Service information found that two-thirds of the sales were priced at less than $200,000 and nearly a third were $200,000-$500,000. “December 2013 closed out our biggest sales year since 2006, so it is no surprise January 2014 showed an increase over January 2013,” said SABOR Chairwoman Missy Stagers. “San Antonio’s growing economy has allowed more people to realize the dream of homeownership and the affordable home prices mean they can make their money go further.” The median sales price of a home in San Antonio rose 7 percent to $161,000, and the average price in January was up 6 percent over the same month in 2013. Houses sold this January moved an average of 75 days after hitting the market, 16 percent faster than a year ago, SABOR reported. In the 78213 ZIP code, closed sales increased by three to 19 in January and the median sales price climbed 64.6 percent to $138,000, according to data

from the Texas Market Trends Report. Available inventory in the Castle Hills area shrank to 4.1 months from 6.1 months in January of last year. The median price in 78230 rose 10.9 percent to $170,000 and closed sales were up by nine to 33 deals for the month. Inventory was cut by more than half to 3.2 months. In the 78231 ZIP code, the median price was strong with a rise of 31.1 percent to $269,000. Closed sales remained relatively flat, down by one to nine deals for January. But those houses sold much faster with an average of just 72 days on the market, compared to nearly six months the previous January. There was a slight decline of 2 percent in the median sales price to $294,000 in the 78248 ZIP code and closed sales also were flat at 19 for the month. The median price of a home in 78249 was up 6.7 percent to $160,000 and closed sales rose by two to 45 deals. SABOR’s President and CEO Angela Shields said strong sales early in the year portend even better results later in the year, when more people are in the market to buy a home. “The winter months can be a slower sales time in housing, but this year we have been experiencing tremendous growth and expect to continue that trend as winter winds down and we enter the spring buying season,” Shields said.

change how people perceive opera. “I want to say the myth of the fat lady singing is over,” Richter said. The idea is to bring high-quality chamber opera to San Antonio so that everyone can enjoy the performances. Stokes said the company performs shows that are immediate and authentic. Opera is seen as a marriage of text and music, highlighting performances filled with drama, love and deception that are designed to mesmerize and shock. When the emotional level of a performance becomes so overwhelming that words are obsolete, the singing begins. However, Stokes believes the music and words must be relevant. “It is just an important opportunity

The skate club formed in 2002, but not without years of struggling to convince the administration they were more than a bunch of slackers involved in a dangerous sport. Students many times approached Reagan Beres, who is the Advanced Via Individual Determination coordinator/ AVID elective teacher, but whenever they presented their proposal to school leaders, it was turned down. “That year, 2002, that group of boys just wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer,” Beres said. While school officials kept saying “it’s too dangerous, it’s a liability,” Beres encouraged her students to push harder. They compiled statistics and created a comprehensive presentation, and found that skateboarding injuries ranked between golf and volleyball. Those two sports are mainstays at high schools across the district, and the skaters argued the point. The administration agreed, and the skate club has been nose-grinding and kick-flipping ever since. But what makes skating so great? “Everything,” Zettner said. There are no bad parts to skateboarding, according to the students. “Every time you land a new trick, it just gets better and better. You keep getting better and better, every time you fall it just brings you back and makes you push harder,” Zettner said. While there is always a chance of falling or “eating it,” the adrenaline that comes with defying gravity while atop a plank and four wheels is incredible, the skaters said. to reexamine our humanity, it puts us back in the big moral area where we lose ourselves and we’re so caught up in the story of these characters that we let go of ourselves for a little bit,” Stokes said. Opera Piccola just wrapped its fifth show, a double feature of "Bastien and Bastienne" by Mozart and the contemporary "La Curandera" by Robert X. Rodriguez, stories about love just in time for Valentine’s Day. The final performance of the season is May 10 and 11, with another double feature — "Orpheus and Euridice" and "Green Sneakers," both by Ricky Ian Gordon. Promising to be a “real treat” for San Antonio, these two new pieces deal with love and loss, Stokes said. “This is the most fun thing in the world, to pretend and that we pretend so well that everybody wants to pretend with us, or that it becomes real,” she added.

shaped him into the person he is today. As far as the slacker image that has dogged the skateboarding community for years, the members of the skate club say that isn’t them, and their supervisor is on their side. “I think the common misconception is that it’s for lazy kids, which defies all logic, because it is truly, truly an athletic endeavor,” Beres said. To be in the skateboard club, students have to keep up with their academics and adhere to the same rules as the sports teams on campus. The club gathers to discuss different activities and they meet every Wednesday at Lady Bird Johnson Community Park to skate. However, most members eat, sleep and breathe skateboarding, and are out at the skatepark every day. While skateboarding does have its risks, most of the skateboarders recover easily and keep trying to motivate others. “Skateboarding to me means pushing yourself to the limit. Even though it can be pretty risky, the risk is worth every penny,” Smith said.
