The road hasn't been easy, and from the start he faced some controversial issues including remarks by a staff member linked to proposed revisions to the city's nondiscrimination ordinance to include sexual orientation. He recently visited with LOCAL Community News to discuss his views for District 8. “Civic engagement has always been a passion. It’s not really the politics of it, or even the office," he said. "It’s really just about civic participation, which excites me.”

fforts by church and city officials to iron out differences in San Antonio's updated non-discrimination policies are to be commended, but the firestorm could have been avoided altogether if the city had just stopped trying to be the thought police. The issue involves strengthening already existing anti-bias rules to ensure fairness on the part of city employees, municipal appointees and city contractors toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Some religious groups argued that instead of preventing discrimination, the policy targets them because of their beliefs against same-sex marriage, thus denying them the right of free speech. District 1 Councilman Diego Bernal (pictured) , who pushed for the update, later met with church leaders and softened the language. That speaks well for his willingness to compromise, but why create an issue if none existed in the first place? The city already had an anti-discrimination ordinance. As District 10 Councilman Carlton Soules asked, where is the empirical evidence indicating there is a need to tinker with the policy? This is still the United States where free speech is protected. Offering an opinion or a religious view some find unpopular is an inalienable right under the Constitution. No one in their right mind supports discrimination or bias when someone seeks a city job or a city service. But that is not the same as expressing a personal view or a religious belief with which others disagree.
When groups attack conservatives for their views, will their opinions bar them from public service or city jobs? Probably not. The law says speech should only be limited when it threatens physical harm or incites a panic. Policing opinions is not the purview of the government. Plenty of other countries have such practices, but they are not democracies. Instead, city governments should stick to their core mission: fixing roads, maintaining health standards, ensuring public safety and a variety of other functions that keep the buses running on time and potholes filled. Perhaps such ordinances are proposed by leaders trying to curry favor with certain voting blocs for the next election. Local councils — not just in San Antonio — should avoid the temptation to seek popularity with one set of voters at the expense of free speech. That is a slippery slope.

Too much government interference already Editor: Thanks to LOCAL Community News for the editorial against banning soft drinks in schools. I wholeheartedly agree. I believe that
it is the parents' responsibility and duty to raise their children. It is a shame that so many neglect this responsibility, but that does not give the right to take the responsibility away from the rest of us. We have too much government interference in our lives as it is. We are supposed to be a free people. Ronald L. Williams

powerless to challenge sexual predators? To understand why women often feel defenseless in such situations, I turned to Maria Falcón, counseling supervisor at the Bexar County Family Justice Center, where she teaches empowerment classes for abused women. “Men who violate, who cross boundaries, it’s their personality," she said. "They are going to keep doing it. Look at Anthony Weiner! Look at (President Bill) Clinton! And their wives, who are powerful women, just stand up with them like it doesn’t matter! How are things going to change if we say it doesn’t matter?" She added: “Instead of putting all the focus on what you need to do to stop being a victim, what about putting all this effort into teaching men and boys not to be perpetrators? The prevention needs to be done with the abusers, the same way it was with racism. "Not just women, but men need to stand up and challenge other men, politically, in the media, in the schools. This isn’t a women’s issue. It’s a men’s issue. To make a difference, we have to transform...how we see men, women and children; with respect.” That’s a lot to think about. What do you think? '50 Shades of Gross' by susan yerkes
E
ditor's note: Award-winning reporter, columnist and editor Susan Yerkes now writes a monthly column for LOCAL Community News. We are pleased to share her wit and insight with our readers:
This year’s steamiest, most scandalous summer read was not a novel. It was a true-life drama, played out in dozens of front-page stories — the sexual assault trial of prominent San Antonio dermatologist Dr. Calvin Day. You might call it “50 Shades of Gross.” More than a dozen of Day’s former patients and employees took the stand to testify against him. The media served up constant reports packed with enough raunchy details to satisfy the most salacious thrill-seeker, along with powerful pathos and downright tragedy, when Day’s son committed suicide just hours after the jury found his father guilty in late June. Day could have been sentenced to 20 years in prison, but was granted probation. His family was shattered and his reputation was in ruins. Still he continued to fight the verdict, and on Aug. 26, state District Judge Ron Rangel granted his motion for a new trial,
Full disclosure: I was Day's patient 15 years ago, but I never experienced anything unsavory. As the trial unfolded, I found myself shocked, outraged and perplexed. After all, most of us have known guys who were by all appearances decent men, but in some circumstances turned out to be lecherous jerks. Day will get a new day in court and possibly a chance to tell his story, but what about other defendants in other cases? Here’s what drives me nuts: How can otherwise responsible men risk jobs, reputations, families and even prison for a quick feel? And why do women allow them to get away with it, before somebody finally speaks out? Even after the trial, I kept thinking about those questions. I recalled how the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on Clarence
Thomas’ Supreme Court nomination became must-watch TV after Anita Hill’s allegations of sexual harassment. I remember my mother’s reaction to the whole affair. "A good, hard slap in the face is a lot better solution than dragging this kind of thing out in court,” she said tartly. That remark kept coming back to me. Why do even smart, successful women often feel

Training, council work coming together for Nirenberg DISTRICT 8 VISION
In his “embedded” position as a District 8 resident, Nirenberg brings an inside perspective to the job as councilman. Nirenberg and his wife moved to the area when looking at schools for their son. “The Jewish Community Center (on Northwest Military Highway) had sparkling recommendations, so it was the
SEPTEMBER 2013
epicenter of our home search,” he said. Once he joined the community, Nirenberg — general manager of KRTU 91.7, the radio station at Trinity University — said he began looking at the future. “The challenge in District 8 is that everything has to do with how we deal with growth,” Nirenberg said. “District 8 is growing twice as fast as the rest of San Antonio in terms of population. We grew 16 percent in the city, we grew 33 percent since the last census in population. In terms of area, we’re also growing." “It’s the site of major economic centers, educational institutions, the medical center, USAA, Valero, you name it, it’s there. The Interstate 10 corridor is booming. We have an extremely diverse population in terms of socio-economics, demographics, and politics. Very diverse. So, we are a
The challenge in District 8 is that everything has to do with how we deal with growth Councilman Ron Nirenberg
great study for how the city can deal with growth in a smart way,” he added. The newly minted council member is grappling with taking care of core services while maintaining the quality of life, including fixing streets and preserving public safety. "At the same time, we have to make sure we’re protecting certain regional assets such as the Edwards Aquifer," added Nirenberg, who supports aquifer-protection initiatives such as the Prop 1 sales tax to buy up development rights over the aquifer. “I think in District 8, as we grow out I-10 and develop over the recharge zone, what we do in our district is going to have a dramatic effect on development and growth policy moving forward as a city and probably the region,” he said. In a recent, highly charged situation in which District 9 Councilwoman Elisa Chan was caught on tape making comments about same-sex couples that alienated many, Nirenberg had to make a decision about his chief of staff. Jeff Bazan, previously Chan’s chief of staff, is heard on the secret recording making anti-gay comments during a conversation with her. Bazan was hired as Nirenberg’s chief of staff after the election, but long before the tape was leaked to media outlets. When Bazan's conversation surfaced, Nirenberg placed him on indefinite administrative leave and issued a statement saying the staffer's comments did not reflect his own views. A few days later, Bazan resigned. The incident seemed to rally Nirenberg to a decision on the non-discrimination ordinance, which passed Sept. 5 in an 8-3 vote at City Council. The councilman said in a statement that he supported revisions to the revised policy because, "Every San Antonian deserves equal protection under the law.” Nirenberg added, “My position came after long deliberation and working with (District 1 Councilman Diego Bernal) and the city attorney to address my initial concerns. The revisions now make it a strong and fair ordinance.”
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
College work and real life are coming together again for Nirenberg in his new position. Nirenberg worked for the Annenberg Public Policy Center for 10 years. “I worked in 22 cities around the country teaching people why it’s important to be involved, not just voting, but also asking questions, seeking redress of issues in their community,” he said. Nirenberg becomes passionate when he talks about his civic-involvement projects and developing curricula for schools. “We worked with a lot of young people in schools. We had programs, curriculum,
we would work with school districts and have them (adapt) their curricula in citizenship for core government classes," he said. "Our approach was, ‘You can get people to care if you start talking about the issues they care about.’" Later, while in San Antonio, Nirenberg was working with a film crew making a documentary about elections by observing local balloting. On Sept. 11, 2001, the film team was in New York to document the primary election when terrorists attacked, destroying the World Trade Center with hijacked airliners. “I was in San Antonio that day,” Nirenberg said. “So on 9/11, I was there at 5 or 6 in the morning, gathering the news. I turn on the radio and hear about the planes,” he said. “That was kind of a seminal moment. Everything shifted … That film crew immediately pivoted to a program called ‘Mayors in a Time of Crisis.’ We filmed the documentary basically about the city’s response to 9/11.” Nirenberg used their work to develop a standardized curriculum for government classes. He remains excited about the results of the civic engagement program that came from the work. “So all the measures that we look for in civic engagement in things like SA 2020 (city plan for growth) and just dreaming about how our city should be – we were doing that," he said. "And it just had to do with talking to people about stuff they cared about.”
FITNESS
The new councilman also supports initiatives that help make San Antonio a fit city. Nirenberg was serious about bodybuilding in college, but not for the reasons some think — it was an academic thing. “One of the things I did in college was study subcultural communication. I was at the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania,” he said. Nirenberg viewed subcultures from an ethnographic perspective, and one of the case studies focused on the subculture of body building. “It was very interesting stuff,” Nirenberg said. “How people formulate their ideas, why they’re so committed, the formation of communities. . .While I was doing that, I became involved in auto ethnography, where the researcher embeds himself in the community and reports out.” Once out of college, Nirenberg started a fitness program in San Antonio. “When I was at Trinity, I studied communication and also business — and I have an entrepreneurial bone. So I started a (fitness business) and built a studio. I started taking clients in.”

ILL COUNTRY VILLAGE — For Harry Mazal, the Holocaust was all-consuming.
Over time, he built one of the largest private Holocaust libraries in the country, but its future is now in question because no one locally wants to acquire or maintain the collection. Mazal, 74, died in 2011 after spending years amassing the books, documents, photographs, recordings and other materials for the Mazal Holocaust Library. “To see that we have a history but no one (in San Antonio) wants to house it is very sad," lamented Cantor David Silverstein, a family friend. "It’s depressing. But it is what it is.” Using his own money, Mazal constructed a 3,000-square-foot library at the back of his 8,000-square-foot home on Hidden

View to house the collection. It is said to be the world’s largest private collection on the Holocaust – with thousands of books and scores of other documents on display. Mazal was raised as a Presbyterian. He embraced his Jewish heritage when, as a freshman, he was blackballed by a Georgia Tech fraternity because he was “Jewish.” His fascination with the Holocaust began in 1967 when he visited
Germany and several of the death camps, including Bergen-Belsen. The Holocaust is defined by the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., as “the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of approximately 6 million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators” during World War II. Mazal’s journey to research and document
all that he could about the Holocaust began with that trip to Germany, long before he settled in San Antonio in 1989. He collected everything he could related to the genocide. The house and library sit along a quiet stretch of roadway. And the library itself, designed and built by Mazal, is calming and beautiful despite the horror contained in the records housed there. Even as he battled cancer, Mazal worked tirelessly to gather every shred of evidence he could to document the Holocaust, friends and relatives said. He devoted untold hours discrediting the so-called Holocaust deniers, an effort that continued until the day he died. During the years, the library attracted scholars from around the world who came to study the original documents he’d amassed. Dignitaries and others have visited the facility, too — most recently San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro in April. But with Mazal gone, odds are the library and its collection may be doomed, according to friends and relatives.

women in business
Women making more of a mark in business by Bonny Osterhage
he battle of the sexes in the workplace has waged for years and, while men have usually dominated as CEOs or entrepreneurs, women are beginning to make more inroads as leaders in the workplace. According to recent statistics, 4.5 percent of Fortune 500 companies have female CEOs and the number of successful businesswomen continues rising. Is it because women are more accommodating in the business world, or because the business world has become more accommodating to women? Maybe a little of both, according to an article on www.cbsnews.com, which notes there has been a shift in the business world from the “lead-and-

Eyra Perez, executive director for the San Antonio Education Partnership, said relationship-building is key to her line of work and being a woman has not been a disadvantage. Nonprofits employee many female leaders, possibly because of the communication, listening and relationshipbuilding skills women inherently possess, Perez said. “I lead with my heart and am very Eyra Perez passionate about S.a. education what I do and partnership
I lead with my heart and am very passionate about what I do and I think that comes across when I am speaking
I think that comes across when I am speaking,” said Perez, who has worked with the partnership for eight years, three of those as executive director. Raising money in this economy is difficult and being able to make people care about your project means cultivating and nurturing relationships. Perez explained that you can’t just walk in with your hand out and expect them to give. “People see my passion and hopefully that’s what inspires them to donate,” she said. The partnership has spent 25 years helping students and their parents prepare for and attend college. From filling out applications to choosing a major and even preparing elementary-age children for success, the organization has provided nearly $2 million in scholarships. Angie Borras, owner of Houses in SA, puts her relationship-building skills to work in the real-estate market, listing and marketing properties, and working with banks and individuals. Although she said she thinks that women are often better organizers when it comes to structured processes and follow-throughs, she added that she still
finds that she is often not taken seriously. “When it comes to corporate real estate, sometimes financial institutions perceive that women are more emotionally driving than business-driven when it comes to home buying,” she said. “Once I proved that I could bring both perspectives to the table, my business boomed.” Evelyn O'Leary, a hairstylist and wig educator of San Antonio Wigs & Hair Salon, is a Jefferson High School graduate who said her 30 years of experience helps create a professional level of service customers don't forget. What she really finds satisfying is "knowing that I've helped clients find what they're looking for, and (they) leave the shop with a smile on their face," said O'Leary, who has extensive training through HairuWear, the world's leading manufacturer of wearable hair. Sandra P. Palomino of The Vision Place, an optometrist with 20 years of experience, echoed that sentiment. "The most satisfying thing about my job is being able to identify a visual need and solving it to enhance a patient's quality of life," said Palomino, who has owned her own business and worked in San Antonio for 18 years.

Women finding balance between work and home by Bonny Osterhage
n today's society, career women are expected to be superhumans who can juggle work, family and friends without dropping the ball. But that's not always possible, especially since a woman — no matter how successful her career — is often still expected to be the primary caregiver, the glue that holds the family together. So how does she balance the expectations both personally and professionally? In the case of Dr. Kay Morris, trained in obstetrics and gynecology and founder of Refined Balance, a bioidentical hormone replacement center, it takes some thinking outside the box. “I would take my children on rounds with me when they were little,” said the mom of two sons, ages 23 and 30. “Their dad would also bring them up to the hospital to have dinner with me or they would do their homework at my office. It was what we had to do to make it work sometimes if I wanted to see them.” Morris said she was fortunate her husband was a stay-at-home dad able to handle the daily schedules and activities. When the couple divorced, however, Morris hired full-time help with her boys during the day. For Morris, the balance came from finding quality time with her children more than quantity time. Weekends were filled with trips to the zoo or the park. An avid potter, she and the boys spent time in her home pottery studio or attending art classes together. “You have to make your time together count,” she said. “Just being in the same house isn’t enough. You have to be interacting and communicating.” Even as the boys grew up and their
demands on her time lessened, they still needed mom in other ways, even if it was just to serve as a listener or a sounding board. “It isn’t easy to handle all of it, but you just juggle and do the best you can,” she said. "There are only 24 hours in a day.” Of those 24 hours, it is imperative to carve out a few that are entirely your own. “We have a pact that, one day a week, we cannot do anything work related for 24 hours,” said Mary Ann Samuelson, owner of Pixel Savvi, a digital art studio that uses iPads and technology to teach painting classes for groups and individuals.. “It’s usually on a Sunday.” How does she do that while running her business? According to Samuelson, time management is key. “I have to plan my day and, if I plan I am more likely to follow through,” she said. A typical day might include hitting the gym at 6:30 a.m., and then spending the morning networking via social media to promote the business. Then it’s off to the studio for a few hours, coming home for dinner, and then back to the studio, often as late as 10 p.m., after which Samuelson, a self-described night owl, might take a leisurely swim to unwind. It’s a tough schedule, but Samuelson is passionate about her business so it’s not something she minds. “We want to serve the community by helping people to relax a little,” she said. “Art makes people happy in general, and it’s a great way to disconnect and de-stress.” Yumei Jin, the top manager at Taichi Wellness Spa, understands the need for balance. With two years in her current position and 22 years of experience, Jin is trained in Chinese health approaches, herbs, massage and cosmetology. "We do acupuncture, acupressure, reflexology, acupressure facial," she said. "We let people know how to take care of themselves. And our clients call me 'Healthy Ambassador.'"

The NATURAL Creation of Wealth The Housing Market is, typically, a social indicator of economic well-being. If real estate investing is a catalyst to the creation of wealth – why do so many people ignore it when it is the most NATURAL way of creating wealth? The two things that are basic human need and constant in your life are for food and shelter. If that is true then why not take something that is constant and make it a permanent investment towards the creation of wealth? If I were to tell you every time you eat you could be investing in your future, would you eat? I think so. Unfortunately, other than selecting foods that are good for you, there’s no ECONOMIC benefit to eating. Now, what if I told you that every time you paid for your ‘chosen shelter’ you were creating personal wealth - would you believe me? I sure hope so because it’s TRUE! Every time you make a payment for your ‘shelter’ you’re creating wealth for SOMEBODY. Hopefully, it’s for you. If it isn’t, take a seat and read carefully what I’ve got to say… EVERYONE has the same opportunity to create wealth starting with where they chose to live. When you chose to rent over buying you are choosing to create wealth for someone else. You may be ‘sparing’ yourself of repairs and maintenance but you’re robbing yourself of the wealth to which you’re entitled to NATURALLY. When I say ‘naturally’, I mean that this is a basic need and expense which should be thought of differently than a monthly payment or ‘maintenance hassle’. As soon as a young adult is able to pay for an apartment, they should first consider buying a small condo, townhome or duplex. The lending programs are there for them to do that so why not take advantage and start building wealth? When you do that, your monthly payment for your ‘shelter’ becomes an investment and tax deductible item. That is just the beginning of your wealth creation. What happens next is nothing short of FANTASTIC! It’s time to move from your small condo/duplex or townhome because you’ve married or need a bigger space. DON’T SELL OR REFINANCE!! You lease it instead. At this point you should get a professional and experienced property manager that will lease it out and keep your headaches at bay. Done correctly that property will soon be paid off and you’ll be drawing the FULL monthly mortgage paid by someone else. If you think that 15, 20 or a 30 year mortgage is too long a wait, then I say you’re not seeing the ‘big picture’. Why? Because if you bought that condo when you were in college (let’s say 20 years old) and at worst-case scenario you have a 30-year mortgage the property is paid off and additional monthly income at 50! (Not too bad when you’re trying to set yourself up for retirement.) In the mean time, you have now become an investor which qualifies you for even MORE tax deductions. Ask any CPA. Now then – your family has grown out of your first starter home and you’re ready to move up. Repeat steps shown above. Now you have TWO INVESTMENT properties with very low interest rates because you purchased them at the onset for you to live. While a tenant pays for the mortgages on these properties – you are deducting your expenses (even on your own home) because you have a home-based business of investment properties. Per IRS you can deduct a portion of your car, car insurance, home insurance, home office expense, utilities and much more! Again, consult a CPA. Now then – your family has now settled into your THIRD property. How wonderful is that? Structured correctly, you can start paying some principal off your smallest mortgage in addition to its monthly mortgage payment. Once you get to a point where there’s enough equity to purchase perhaps a duplex or four-plex; you’ll sell that property and move that equity into another that has cash flow. SWEET!!!! If you follow these steps I assure you that you will have a happy and prosperous retirement just by using the NATURAL flow of things. Align yourself with a good real estate professional that’s going to guide you through while you learn the ropes. Some of you will read this and say ‘piece of cake – I can do this myself’ and may actually be able to from the onset. However; if you find that it isn’t going as planned, seek professional guidance. You see, you’re learning. An investor knows that numbers as well as experience in handling things is what make it work. With a good strategy and experienced partners you, too, will soon be reaping the rewards of NATURAL wealth building and managing risk like a pro! November ballot issue asks for $13.5 million by Lucille Sims Thomas

ASTLE HILLS — There’s a lot of moving and shaking going on in the city as a number of construction projects get under way or are about to start, as well as major business growth after officials put out the welcome mat.
During the past 12 months, two major corporations have decided to relocate their headquarters to the San Antonio suburb. Pape-Dawson, the civil engineering firm that worked on the AT&T Center,
City Manager Rita Hoyl agreed with the mayor's assessment. “Excitement! There are a lot of things going on — we’ve been very busy here at the window with the permits

the Toyota Tundra assembly plant and Brooks City-Base, has already broken ground on its future headquarters building at Loop 410 and West Avenue. Joining Pape-Dawson in relocating its business headquarters to the same 12-acre campus is the Bank of San Antonio. For many years, developers avoided Castle Hills because it was so hard to get anything done, according to Mayor Bruce Smiley-Kaliff. Now, the town tries to make it easy for new development to happen — within the rules. “Quite frankly, we have redone so much of this city in the way it is organized, in the way it moves forward — we’ve gone from a community that says no to a community that says yes,” Smiley-Kaliff said. “And now, in the last couple of years, the council and the city management and, in part, me the mayor, have tried to make it a culture of asking people to come invest in our city.”
being issued — just a lot of excitement in the air right now,” she said. “We’ve got some new homes going up. We’ve got a builder that came in and leveled an old house and is rebuilding a beautiful new 3,500-square-foot home. It’s just a lot of stuff going on — people are excited to come into Castle Hills,” she added. “The business climate in Castle Hills has gotten very friendly. We don’t overregulate — however, we do protect our community,” Smiley-Kaliff said. Other construction projects starting or about to begin involve a restaurant, medical facilities, a university and a new school. They include: • A new medical arts center with a restaurant in the lower level that will be located at Loop 410 and West Avenue. • The old Firestone building across the

end over and grasp an oval on the ground the size and weight of a 2-liter soda bottle. With William Tell-like marksmanship, spiral it backwards through your legs to a narrow target 7 yards away. Repeat, doubling the distance.
Welcome to the world of the football long snapper. Under the tutelage of North Side resident and long-snapping coach Doug Conrey, this football exercise recently was displayed on a sun-drenched, 100-plus degree summer afternoon at Reagan High School. In this football-mad state, Conrey oversees the only year-round clinic in Central and South Texas for campers who yearn to learn the art and science of long snapping. The instruction is "basically unique because there are very few football staffs in America that have coaches that actually do long
snapping," Conrey said. "Very few coaches have actually performed the skill. It’s not a difficult skill, but if you don’t know it, you can’t teach it." He also believes in the "10,000-hour rule." "Whether it’s in music, violin, tennis, dance, swimming, it takes almost 10,000 hours to perfect the skill," he said. "The most important quality is if you’re willing to work and put in the hours to practice. I tell my snappers they have to have at least 100 snaps per day, during off-season training, at least 50." That includes "time away from high school practices to practice on their own,” he added. Like pilgrims, some boys trek hundreds of miles to learn the skill, one from as far away as California, but most are North East and Northside independent school district high school lads seeking knowledge from the 65-year-old football guru. On and off the field, explaining the fundamentals and genesis of long snapping is a never-ending sermon for Conrey. Such was the case on a recent trip to Austin where
High school football players from the North East, Northside and other school districts far and wide learn the secrets of the long snap at a camp conducted by coach Doug Conrey. Photo by Steven Gilmore
Conrey also holds long-snapping camps. Tugging at his sweat-soaked “Texas Long Snapping” T-shirt promoting his camp and website at www.txlongsnapping. com, Conrey recalled one give-andtake with an inquiring layman. “I said, 'Have you ever seen a football game?' ‘Of course, I have.’ 'How does the ball go back?' ‘I don’t know.’ 'We’re the guy lined up over the ball and snap it back to the punter and hopefully he catches it.'”
Conrey has a long association with the gridiron. He is a Lee High School Hall of Famer, helping the Volunteers get all the way to the 1965 Texas State Championship Game, playing for a squad referred to as the "Dream Team." While quarterbacks get the cheers and publicity, long snappers usually remain anonymous at best and become

Shavano Park continues from pg. 01
Negotiations took four to five years by Lucille Sims Thomas
S
havano Park and San Antonio have crafted a land swap involving the latter's linear park system that officials say will benefit both cities and it doesn't cost a dime. Though the negotiations for the land deal have been going on for years, they kicked into high gear when San Antonio got more funding for its park, officials said. No money is involved in the swap. There were some areas of land that were in a flood zone that were not being used that were within our territorial jurisdiction — within our city," said Shavano Park Mayor A. David Marne. "We deeded them or are in the process of deeding them to San Antonio, which actually benefits San Antonio and Shavano Park in a big way.” The swap includes land for San Antonio's growing linear park system, which is in
keeping with the Alamo City's efforts to increase fitness and exercise by residents. Meanwhile, the swap will increase the amount of commercial property available in Shavano Park and the city’s borders will make more sense, that city's officials said. “This will help us in the long term in our development and also unify the linear park with oversight from the city of San Antonio. It was truly a win-win situation that benefited the city of Shavano Park and the city of San Antonio,” Marne said. Shavano Park interim City Manager Chuck Pinto said the deal must finish going through a process that determines the value to each city and could take 90120 days. A developer also is involved. “Oh, it’s a fantastic idea. I don’t look at just Shavano Park. San Antonio is continuing a very valuable project with the linear park system — it is used a lot, it’s the linear trail," Pinto said. "And if you go to their website you can see there’s some pretty extensive planning for the future, and it’s an environmental thing as well. And what’s happening is, people from San Antonio and Shavano Park and anywhere else in this area use that system.” He didn’t know how much property was involved in the swap, but the land being discussed that Shavano Park owns is creek

land running along the eastern border of the city. The land coming from San Antonio is about 12 acres near Loop 1604. The land that Shavano Park is getting will be part residential and part light commercial. A small piece of tract land that is part of the swap is already being developed in Shavano Park. “This will also give us better police and fire control,” Pinto said. The swap also enhances the trail system.
“All this is really doing is making sure that the San Antonio trail system is totally within their jurisdiction," he added. "Plus, we have a trail system that Shavano Park and anybody else in this area can use." Though negotiations took four to five years, the results will benefit residents in both cities, Marne said. “It just finally progressed to a point now to where the swaps are to be made,” he added.

Football continues from pg. 17 infamous at worst, he said. "That’s it, no accolades, 'cause we know when it’s a good snap, it’s a personal gratification and also we just helped our team. That’s what we’re here for, not the limelight,” Conrey added. During the biweekly, two-hour sessions, with roughly eight to a camp, the Mr. Miyagi of long snapping instructs with physical techniques – including “Superman fingers” — as well as mental building blocks for football and elsewhere. “I’m really big on teaching life skills,” Conrey said. “Do the right thing. Say thank you; yes, sir; no, sir. Look people in the eye." Athletes said Conrey teaches them valuable skills about one of the sport's most overlooked contributions. “I hear all the time, ‘Oh, that’s not even a real position,’” said camper Kyle Heffron, an 18-year-old Reagan graduate attending Texas Tech University this fall. “But, there are three parts of football – offense, defense and special teams – and if you’re not right with all of them, you’re not going to succeed." Countering the monotony and drudgery of long snapping is easy for Conrey's disciples. “It doesn’t become repetitious, because the first day he’ll change some things and the second time he’ll kind of put fine touches on you to make you better,” said 17-year-old Johnson High School senior Shane Retzloff. “You break a whole lot of bad habits like I had.” Conrey’s devout, old-school approach does not go unheeded. “I’ve worked with him a little over a year and a half and without him, I don’t know where I’d be to this day,” Heffron said. Conrey commands respect and, in turn, admiration. “He’s one of those coaches who works with you until you get it right,” said Alec Huntley, 16, a Johnson junior. A previous Conrey camper and Reagan graduate, Connor Knight, is currently the long snapper at Oklahoma University. Also, the first student Conrey taught was from Churchill High School. Because he could long snap, the student played in an All-Star game and ultimately earned a college scholarship. Conrey hopes his long-snapping clinics can become a San Antonio-area tradition that will help many long snappers in high school, college and beyond. Though Conrey plans to retire from his day job next year, he has been associated with long snapping for nearly a half-century and won’t be shuttering his 2-year-old camp anytime soon. “Don’t let go of the vine in your hand, until you have another one in sight. It’s the rule of the jungle,” he said. “This is where I need to be. God has put it in me – a love for kids in my heart.”

Mazal continues from pg. 13 Daughter Aimee Mazal Skillin, who lives in Colorado, serves as executive director of the library and is trying to find a home for the collection. Of her dad, Skillin said, “I have to say, it was such a privilege to have him as my father. He was an amazing person who accomplished so much in his lifetime. He died long before he was done with what he wanted to do." The challenge now is finding a new home for the collection, Skillin said. Mazal’s widow, Jerry Mazal, still lives in the family home. But living alone in a large residence attached to a significant private library is challenging. She wants to move, but is hesitant to do so until a home is found for the library — and that is proving to be next to impossible. When asked what her husband hoped would happen to the library after his death, Jerry Mazal laughed and said, “He never thought he would die. Neither did I. He never talked about it.” So far, no individual and no organization in San Antonio seems willing to house and manage the Holocaust library.

an Antonio, with the help of North Side communities, hopes to reclaim first place in a nationwide competition against other cities next month for the most participation in National Night Out. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, National Night Out was introduced by the National Association of Town Watch in 1984 to bring neighbors and police together to craft anti-crime strategies. National Night Out in San Antonio is Oct. 1 and lets neighbors "give crime a going-away party," according to a national organizer. The Alamo City has been in the top three places in the 300,000-population and up category for participation the past six years, said Juan Ayala, San Antonio's coordinator and city community services supervisor. “You know you’re doing something right when San Antonio is always at

Longtime Mazal friend and library volunteer Howie Nestel said they have talked to several parties in Bexar County about taking over the library, including the University of Texas at San Antonio. “At first there is great interest, but that interest is tied to wanting money to come with the collection. And there is no money,” Nestel said. Jerry Mazal agreed. “Everyone talks a good game, but then they want money and I don’t have any to give them,” she said. Mark Freedman, former executive director of the San Antonio Jewish Federation, always hoped the collection would end up at the Campus of the San Antonio Jewish Community on Northwest Military Highway. He and Harry Mazal were best friends. “The collection is enormously valuable and important. It belongs in San Antonio,” Freedman said. But if no one local is willing to take over the library, Freedman plans on talking to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, where he now heads the Nashville Jewish Federation. “There is a vibrant Jewish community in Nashville and I sense a real commitment to Jewish history at the university, so perhaps
that’s an option worth exploring,” he added. Skillin is planning to reach out once again to several San Antonio educational institutions and others to see if there is any interest in housing the collection. Her other option, she says, is to break the library into
pieces and offer it to institutions across the country. It’s an alternative she resists, but it may be the only choice they have. The loss of the library could leave a gap in the fabric of San Antonio's culture, Silverstein added.
the top of the list when it comes time for national recognition,” Ayala said. Last year, the city ranked second, and Ayala said volunteers are working hard to get the Alamo City back on top. Dellview Area Neighborhood Association has planned a fun evening at the Granados Senior Center, where President Anthony De La Zerda invites the neighborhood, including children, for an evening of food and entertainment. “Our objective was to get people out of their homes and to meet their neighbors and actually have fun together,” De La Zerda said. “We want folks to be involved, informed and interested in their community.” The association has invited their San Antonio Fear Free Environment officer from the San Antonio Police Department and the crew from Fire Station 19, as well key members of the community including representatives from security companies and District 1. De La Zerda said five years ago the number of criminal incidents in the area went through the roof, including break-ins, graffiti and several homicides. He believes the association's efforts to create neighborhood unity have helped curb those rising rates. “By getting more people directly involved, it has worked wonders for our community personally. Dellview is
indeed getting to be a nicer and much safer place to live,” De La Zerda said. Preparing for NNO takes time and hundreds of volunteers. In addition to the Oct. 1 observances, lead-up events to the big night include the annual Neighborhood Resource Conference, Target Safety Fairs, a Missions baseball game, the proclamation and lighting ceremonies. The annual National Night Out traditionally takes place the first Tuesday of the month, in August for other states and October for Texas. In addition to block parties, organizations and volunteers gather for cookouts, parades, festivals, safety fairs, youth events and visits from local officials and law-enforcement agencies. “This event is an all-out San Antonio gathering that helps create the leaders of tomorrow,” Ayala said. A rising tide of crime three decades ago helped spur the creation of National Night Out, with neighbors vowing to take back their neighborhoods, officials said. The most common misconception is that National Night Out is just another party, Ayala said. The night-out program remains focused on fighting crime and drugs. It allows participants to learn more about each other as neighbors. Ayala believes that without the program, children and future generations could lose cherished values and a sense of community.
Preparing for NNO is no small task, and most organizations start in January, while Ayala and his team kick off in December. It’s a yearly project with plenty of orders to place, phone calls to make, meetings to attend, partnerships to build with sponsors such as Target and communication with the Police Department and dignitaries. “We assist many, providing information and guidance to prepare them for a successful NNO event, especially new participants,” Ayala said. National Night Out today involves more than 37 million people in 15,000 communities from the 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada and military bases worldwide. There is no cost to register for the event; any municipality, law-enforcement agency, crime-prevention organization, community group or neighborhood can participate. “This is a night for America to stand together and promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. On NNO, we invite neighborhoods nationwide to join us and 'give crime a goingaway party,'” said National Project Coordinator Matt Peskin on the National Association of Town Watch website. For more information on getting involved or registering, contact Ayala at 207-8927 or juan.ayala@sanantonio.gov, or visit http://www.natw.org/ for more information on National Night Out.

"I continue to spread the message of hope and freedom that I carried when I arrived here with only my mother’s scarf and that hope she instilled in me.” Today the scarf — the only belonging of his mother's he was able to escape with from Cambodia — has a special shrine in the Sivs’ home. “People need to know we are so blessed – so lucky to be Americans,” Siv said. "In America, we all have golden bones." Meeting this couple for the first time, it’s hard to imagine the vastly different life trajectories that carried them around the world from their respective homes and brought them together so long ago. Siv, a tall, gentle man with an engaging smile, arrived in the U.S. a penniless refugee in 1976. He considers himself extremely fortunate simply to have escaped the unthinkably brutal 1975 Khmer Rouge coup with his life. No one knows how many died in Pol

author of an acclaimed memoir and globe-trotting speaker and consultant, Siv and his wife of almost 40 years, Martha Patillo Siv, enjoy a life full of blessings in their quiet home on Foxhall Lane. Today Sichan Siv’s greatest passion – besides Martha – is spreading the gospel of democracy, speaking to groups around San Antonio and the world. “I speak to everyone – refugees and immigrants, to let them know somebody like them can succeed in America — and to businesses, Rotary clubs, universities,
Pot’s “killing fields” (estimates range in the millions) but the dead included Siv’s entire family. He escaped a forced labor camp at his mother’s urging, and literally crawled out of the Cambodian jungle, severely injured and starving, almost a year later. After months in a camp near the Thailand border, he arrived in the U.S. as a refugee, with only an empty rice bag, $2 and his mother’s scarf to his name. He had his education, however, after attending the best schools in Cambodia before the Khmer Rouge takeover. (After

salocallowdown.com the coup, he pretended to be an illiterate deaf mute to conceal his education, which would have surely marked him for death.) He was fluent in French, English and Spanish, and was working for the U.S.-based CARE relief organization in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, when the country fell. As a newly arrived refugee, Siv went to live with a family in rural Connecticut, where he got a job picking apples. Next, he moved to New York City and drove a taxi, then got a scholarship and earned a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University. In the late 1970s a mutual friend put him in touch with a well-traveled Texan named Martha Patillo, who worked at the United Nations. She invited him to a tea party. And a love story began. “On the surface, somebody from Pampa, Texas, and somebody from Phnom Penh might seem too different,” Martha said. “But we turned out to be soul mates. The bread that was common to us was we loved to travel and had some French background. We were great friends for several years, and then it all blossomed.” On Christmas Eve 1983, Martha and Sichan married. Growing up in Pampa, the child of
two teachers, Martha had always wanted to see the world. She graduated from the prestigious Plan II program at the University of Texas at Austin, then earned a graduate degree in library and information sciences. She lived in France before taking a job with the U.N.’s library depository in New Mexico, then transferred to U.N. headquarters in New York. In 1989, after volunteering for George H.W. Bush’s presidential campaign, Sichan
was hired as a deputy assistant to the president in the White House. The couple moved to Washington, where Martha took a job with the World Bank. In 2001, President George W. Bush nominated Sichan as ambassador to the United Nations, so he commuted between D.C. and New York for the next five years. In 2006, the Sivs decided it was time for a change. After considering several cities, they moved to San Antonio. “San Antonio was perfect. And we really found a place we loved here in Castle Hills,” Martha said. Even the moving date was special to Sichan, who has a phenomenal memory for dates and a deeply sentimental respect for tradition. “Martha and I met for the first time on Sept. 15, 1977,” he said. “We moved to San Antonio on Sept 16, 2006. We had planned to move on Sept. 15, but I had to give a speech in Virginia.” The Sivs still lead a busy life, with regular open house parties for South China Seas, an import business for a cause that Martha and two of her friends incorporated back in New York 25 years ago, importing handmade items from women’s groups and community organizations in Cambodia,
Vietnam, Thailand and other countries. Since moving to San Antonio and becoming involved with the Asian American Chamber of Commerce, she has widened her reach, placing some of her collection in local stores including Hanley-Wood, La Vida Gallery, the San Antonio Museum of Art gift shop and The Twig at the Pearl, where a special area is dedicated to her collection of elegant handicrafts. She and Sichan also have been involved in the annual Asian New Year’s Festival at the Institute of Texan Cultures. While Sichan is not a formal partner in South China Seas, he is an enthusiastic supporter. “It’s the best partnership,” he says. “I support her and she supports me.” As he told a recent group of listeners in San Antonio, “Behind every good Cambodian is a great Texan.” In 2008, Sichan’s autobiography, “Golden Bones: An Extraordinary Journey from Hell in Cambodia to a New Life in America,” was published by HarperCollins. It has been translated into Khmer, Portuguese and Spanish, providing more opportunities for the couple to travel. They try to visit Cambodia once or twice a year, where Sichan monitors his beloved homeland’s economic progress.

When I see actors on TV stripping varnish off wood, or paint off off furniture, I am surprised at the way that they remove it. They have everything but a Hazmat suit on. They are wearing a heavy duty mask, 2 pairs of gloves- plus they are working really hard. And by really hard I mean scrapping, sanding, and sanding again, dust and chemicals everywhere - not easy. Normal strippers dry out quickly an so they always tell you to work in a small 2 x 2 area- because if a stripper drys out, you have real problems. So what surprises me, is that they don’t use Soy Gel. When it comes to removing paint and varnish there is nothing, and I mean nothing that is any easier to use. And you won’t have to arm yourself to the gills with Hazmat attire. No mask, no gloves, and NO sanding and that’s the truth! Soy Gel might have a strange name, but it has virtually no smell, so you can use it inside the house. It will remove up to 4 coats of paint at one time. Just apply the Soy Gel in a thick coat, and then leave it alone. Let it do the work. When we first bought Soy Gel so many years ago, the owner would laugh and say, “ Apply the Soy Gel and then go play a round of golf”. But what he was trying to say was, let the stripper do all the work. Not you. When you can take your finger, push away the Soy Gel and you see the bare wood, the Soy Gel is through working. And then you just take a plastic putty knife and scrape it off, and then wipe the wood down with a wet rag. No sanding, and sanding ….and here is the reason why. Regular strippers will raise the grain of the wood, but not Soy Gel. So you skip a step. And the work. After you remove your paint or varnish...you are ready to paint or stain.
Question: I am having my roof replaced- and they want to put the new roof over the old one. What do you think about that? Is that the best way?

street from that intersection is becoming a new livery service for limousines. • St. George Episcopal School on West Avenue has torn down its old elementary school building and is building a new middle school on the site. The school is meeting in some nearby buildings during construction. • Burger King is building a restaurant at the corner of West Avenue and Jackson-Keller Road, right behind the Shell Station and across from H-E-B. • Webster University recently held an open house for its new facilities in the One Castle Hills Building at Loop 410 and Blanco Road. Pape-Dawson’s new headquarters is expected to open by June 2014. The company has actually owned the property for quite a few years and finally decided to approach the city about developing it. Also, the developers are making an effort to save as many of the heritage oak trees on the site as possible. “They put out feelers and said, 'What do you think about us putting our headquarters and hopefully the Bank of San Antonio’s headquarters on this same 12-acre site?' And I said, ‘Tell me what we need to do,’” the mayor said. Nor is the city giving anything away, he added. “There are no secrets in this city. Transparency is our cornerstone in the way this city operates. We have not given any tax concessions — they haven’t asked for them and we haven’t granted them,” Smiley-Kaliff said. A lot of development in Castle Hills involves the sale of larger acreage that is then subdivided to build upscale housing. This helps the town’s tax coffers because taxes are paid on a number of properties instead of a single parcel. Also, when residential developers build new housing they must put in sewer lines and repair streets, the costs of which otherwise would have fallen on the city and taxpayers, officials said. According to Smiley-Kaliff, not only has the city’s business atmosphere been greatly altered, its demographics have also been changing with the median age dropping from 72 about seven years ago to 52 today. In addition to attracting developers, the council and mayor are asking residents to invest in their town through a $13.5 million bond issue that will be on the Nov. 5 ballot. The money would be used to fix streets and infrastructure. Smiley-Kaliff is hoping the initiative passes “since it is very hard to get businesses and outsiders to invest in a city when its citizens won’t even invest.”

Pets are getting spoiled rotten by new business on North Side by Collette Orquiz
A
North Side entrepreneur says a love of animals led her to create a fun, hands-on business taking care of pets in their homes instead of a career as a veterinarian. Danielle Paredes recently opened Spoiled Rotten Pet Care, a company that focuses on pet-sitting. However, she also visits pets while owners are at work and takes them for walks, gives them baths, feeds them, enjoys play time and even takes them to appointments. “I knew that my passion was with animals and I just always thought to myself, 'I need to do something that’s going to make me happy,'” Paredes said. She worked as a veterinary tech in 2007 and 2008, and pursued a degree in animal biology at both the University of Texas at San Antonio and Texas A&M University, but realized that while veterinarians save many animals' lives, they also have to put down some pets.

Paredes said she wasn't sure she could handle that. Instead, by creating her own insured business, she could focus on pampering and nurturing pets in their homes where they are comfortable. This gives an owner peace of mind, and puts a pet at ease instead of making the animal anxious at a kennel, she added. “I spoil their pet rotten just like the name says,” Paredes said. “I’m going to treat your pet just like my own kid.” Another reason she started the company? She can't bear to leave her 2-year-old Corgi, Dexter (whom she considers a son), at home alone. Paredes caters to each individual and provides a free meet-and-greet before the first sitting or visit to draft a specialized packaged. It also gives her new charges a chance to sniff, lick and get to know her. Pet owners should schedule the meet-and-greet two or three days before the actual visit. “I haven’t met a pet that I haven’t liked.
Obviously, I just fall in love with all these cats, dogs, birds, even fish,” Paredes said. Being “Spoiled Rotten” does come with a few perks: The second visit is free for those testing the waters, and the 11th visit is free for frequent customers. Spoiled Rotten is open 24 hours a day.
Pampering pets is what Danielle Paredes (left) and her furry 'son,' Dexter, have turned into a business called Spoiled Rotten Pet Care, where animals are cared for while their owners are out of town or busy. Photos by Collette Orquiz

Cover 3 plays for keeps with sports-bar launch by Olivier J. Bourgoin
C
over 3 — the newest sports bar on the San Antonio scene — wants to be known for its food as much as its 32 big-screen TVs. The Alamo City's Cover 3 upscale sports bar recently opened its doors, next to Wildfish Seafood Grille and in the spot where The Roaring Fork used to be. Located at 1806 N. Loop 1604 West at Huebner Road, Cover 3 trumpets that it is "the sports bar redefined." It's already established in Austin. The brainchild of Austin natives Matt Dodson and Doug Young, Cover 3 grew out of their passion for sports and great food. After spending 18 years working together at Z Tejas, the two friends became business partners. They named

the place after a popular defensive scheme in American football. Not only are there 32 highdefinition flat-screen TVs, there is even one in each restroom. Patrons can settle themselves into a comfortable red-leather booth and start chowing down on the signature Brick Chicken Sliders or the overstuffed Doug's Certified Reuben Sandwich. The Chop House Burger received a No. 12 ranking in Texas Monthly's list of the 50 best burgers in the state. On the sports side, Cover 3 also made CNN's list as one of the top 101 Sports Bars in the country. Dodson said he and Young put "a lot of love" into crafting a menu that offers something more sophisticated than what you might
expect from a typical sports bar. "I guess that above all, what we would like to be known for is our great food. We operate a scratch kitchen and we are a chef-driven operation," Dodson said. Cover 3, located in a remodeled 7,500-square-foot space, offers a full bar including wine. Surf-andturf menu selections feature seared Ahi tuna, Mahi Mahi tacos, grilled ruby trout, rib-eye steak tacos, Hong Kong salmon, flatbreads and more. The weekend brunch also features a popular “make-yourown” Bloody Mary bar. Cover 3 is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight Friday-Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. Cover 3 is going for a touchdown with an upscale menu featuring scallops (top left) and a beef tenderloin salad (bottom left), while also keeping sports fans happy with 32 flatscreen TVs. Second Fattboy Burgers & Dogs opens by collette orquiz
F
attboy Burgers & Dogs, a staple in the Dellview Area neighborhood, is expanding from its original location to a new site at 11224 Huebner Road, Suite 206. The original restaurant is at 2345 Vance Jackson Road, where the staff has been stacking burgers and dogs with fresh ingredients for three years. Owners (and brother and sister) Frank Torres and Veronica Khan chose the first location because it was close to family and friends. “We have lunches that people are just standing around eating,” Torres said. But a growing customer base led them to open the new location this month. Finding the spot between Interstate 10 and Expo Boulevard was no easy task, but the duo trusted their faith in God. “We started praying about it and from one day to the next somebody walked through the door and had an awesome opportunity for us and we took it,” Khan said. The new location boasts a larger
dining area and the addition of beer and wine, but the restaurant will still be serving up the same thick-and-juicy burgers found at the first site, the siblings said. Made with fresh, premium 100 percent ground beef, the Fattboy Burger, with a half-pound patty, is the most popular menu item and can be paired with many different condiments, as well as grilled and fresh veggies at no extra cost. Other menu items include Hebrew National Beef Franks and marinated
chicken. Burgers and chicken can be ordered "Fatt," meaning a half pound, or "Slim" — one- fourth of a pound. “We put a lot of love into all the food that we make,” Khan said. The new Fattboy Burgers & Dogs is open from 11 a.m. to late evening, with the owners figuring out a specific time that will suit their customers. Fattboy Burgers & Dogs dishes up hearty burgers, chicken and hot dogs with a slew of sides such as fried pickles (above), as well as Bluebell Ice Cream to satisfy the sweet tooth. trong summer sales led the San Antonio residential realestate market into another record-setting July in houses sold.
July house sales in the San Antonio area were up 27 percent over July of last year to 2,430, according to an analysis of Multiple Listing Service data by the San Antonio Board of Realtors. The average home sales price for July was $215,779, up 10 percent from last year, and the median rose 8 percent to $178,000. They also sold fairly quickly in an average of 71 days. “In the wake of high demand and increased prices, the search for a home has gotten more competitive,” said Angela Shields, president and CEO of SABOR. “Sellers are receiving multiple bids on their homes and often homes are selling quickly.” steven gragg SABOR sabor chairman Chairman Steven Gragg observed that summer is busy for buying and selling homes before the start of the school year. “July had the most new listings and active listings in a single month we’ve seen all year,” Gragg said. “These increases show how confident buyers are in the local housing economy and also the opportunities potential sellers have who are considering putting their homes on the market.” In the 78213 ZIP code, the median sales price in July took a turn for the better, up 39.4 percent from the same month last year to $113,000, according to data gathered from Texas Real Estate Trends. The estimated months of supply of inventory

on the market for that area dropped to 3.4 months compared to 7.6 months last July. Closed sales were up to 27 from 16 and the average number of days on the market was shaved by a month to 85 days. For the 78230 area, the median sales price was up 4.6 percent to $237,450 and closed sales in July rose to 54 from 39. The most dramatic market tightening in the area was in the 78231 ZIP code, where the supply of inventory ended July at 2.6 months, down from 11.2 months last July. The median sales price in the area also rose by 37.4 percent to $233,500. The median price in 78248 was up 7.1 percent to $269,700 and moved somewhat faster at an average of 47 days compared to 72 days last July. And in 78248, the median sales price rose 23.3 percent to $185,000 and total closed sales were fairly flat, up just two to 67. More than 37 percent of houses purchased in July were between $200,000 and $500,000, while 58 percent were under $200,000, SABOR reported.
