Whether you’re starting out on your career path or you’ve been in the industry for years, there’s no question that the more you know, the better equipped you are to deal with the demands of a competitive job market, along with your client’s ever-changing requests. As many industry professionals have shared, not only will education arm you with a wealth of new skills but it also opens

As some of the leaders in online education shared in ”Get Online Already!“ on page 52, online training and social media have opened up a whole new wave you’re just getting set to launch your career, we’ve got you covered with “6 Ways to Kick-Start Your Career” on page 54. There’s no question that, on the surface, the lifestyle of an educator may appear pretty glamorous, but my experience has definitely given me a different perspective. In fact, the next time you’re at a seminar or show, I’d suggest you not only give it up for those onstage and behind the scenes but also share your experience with them personally. After all, we’re all in this business together and, as Terry shared, knowing that you’ve impacted the lives and careers of other hairstylists in some positive way is really the greatest reward.

Technical Differences Blazing Industry expert dishes on the different technologies behind Hot Tool materials. When it comes to the temperatures of curling irons and rods, Detra Smith, artistic director of Hot Tools, warns against the common belief that hotter is faster. Hot Tools

carries a range of metal gold and ceramic curling irons and rods, so it’s important to know when to pick up which one. “Ceramic irons have a constant, uniform heat that can set the hair a few seconds longer to create a continuous curl; metal irons get a little hotter, so they need a lower heat setting and require less time to set the hair,” she says. “I tend to compare the heat settings of curling irons to the settings of a clothes iron. If polyester is pressed at the highest setting, it will melt." The same can be said for fine hair on an iron set at the highest setting. And, like denim, coarse textures require a hotter iron to do the job.

DREAMING IN BLONDE
Haircare Au Naturel
Intercosmo’s Voilà D-System offers cool decolourization.
Mother Nature inspires the Pravana NEVO collection. How are you keeping clients in your salon for their next colour? By offering an exceptional colour service only a professional can offer, such as with Voilà D-Blonde, D-Free and DReset, components of the new decolourization system by Intercosmo. With an ammonia-free formula that lightens up to six levels, D-Blonde promises natural-looking hues. D-Free is a dust-free, lightening powder for all types of decolourizing applications and techniques. And D-Reset corrects colour while reducing the size of artificial pigments, revealing an ideal base for new colour.
Salon Pampering
Did you know that plastic bottles remain in landfills for up to 1,000 years? Pravana makes it easy for your salon to get behind a solution that’s good for the earth with NEVO’s product packaging, which is 100 per cent biodegradable, leaving virtually no carbon footprint to be traced. Comprised of ultra-moisturizing shampoos, conditioners and deep treatments, the formulation behind NEVO haircare is nourished with oil and plant extracts from the Amazon, and the line is free of animal testing. Plus, recently a portion of NEVO product sales was donated to City of Hope, extending goodwill to those experiencing life-threatening illness through its support centers.
Introducing Pelicure, a new express hair polishing service to Matrix Biolage. In today’s time-starved and penny-pinched world, a quick and value-added treatment can go a long way. service made with carbonizing powders that gives clients a feeling of sumptuous luxury from a regular backbar service. When added to a conditioner or mask, the carbonizing powders improve hair health, rebalance hair to its natural pH after colouring, and stimulate blood circulation during a scalp massage. Plus, offering Pelicure means giving clients the affordable pampering experience they crave; which can also culminate in a serious boost to your salon’s bottom line. In fact, according to Pamela Walmsley, Ontario education consultant for Matrix, “Studies show that when women are given $100 to spend, they go to the spa first and the salon later.”

BALANCING ACT
Normalizing the scalp is about balancing its exfoliation rate with the right service. According to Tom Porter, founder, and president of Malibu Wellness Inc., knowing what triggers the reaction is key. While triggers vary, common ones include hard water, fragrance and added ingredients in some products. When stylists notice scalp issues, Porter also suggests asking a few questions before beginning a service, which will result in clients leaving the salon with healthier hair.
Malibu Wellness Inc., is a company dedicated to health-based beauty, a leader in the natural wellness category, and maker of Malibu C products. Tom Porter is the founder and president.

Hair Chalk 101 Eric St-Jean, an educator for Kevin.Murphy, offers up his tips for getting maximum impact with colour chalk. Blank Canvas Using a pomade creates a canvas before applying Color.Bug, so pigments have a better grip on the hair. It also gives the colour more sheen and vibrance. High Impact For platinum highlights, I love using the white Color.Bug on blondes. If you want more depth and a more dramatic look, go for the gold Color.Bug. Both add very cool effects, which are great for parties or VIP events. Lasting Finish Give chalk a bit more lasting power by finishing with a quick spritz of hairspray. Remember that these are pigments
The Colour Run If your clients aren’t already asking you about hair chalk, that’s actually good news! Why? Because it means that, as a professional, you will be the one introducing them to this hot colour category instead of them testing out products that haven’t been designed or formulated for hair. Remember that client who came back asking you to correct that at-home ombré horror story? Exactly.
Makeup for hair The important thing to remember about these new (very) temporary colours is that they are essentially makeup for hair—a hybrid between a styling product and colour. And, because they are a novelty, the point here is just to have fun with them! As a bonus, there's zero commitment and it's a product that’s super-easy to use. But hair chalk is also a smart tool to test new colour placements or try out trendy pastels your client might not be ready to commit to just yet. “Hairchalk is definitely a hair accessory, much like makeup. But it’s also a smart way for salons to recruit new clients to permanent colour services,“ says Mathieu Bouchard, marketing group manager for L’Oréal Professionnel.
that stay on the hair’s surface and don’t penetrate the cuticle, which means that you’ll want a finishing product that will seal them a bit.
In the salon and at home, too.
e Launching this month across Canada,
Hairchalk from L’Oréal Professionnel is formulated with pearlescent pigments derived from actual makeup that have been calibrated to achieve optimal visibility, even on dark hair. The colour is resistant to water and styling with hot tools and lasts up to two shampoos. Hairchalk fully respects the hair fibre, leaving hair feeling natural and with no residue. Hairchalk is a liquid that is applied with a makeup sponge onto hair and available in eight shades, from

on the market, says he first became interested in this type of product because he had been ”experimenting with pigments since the ’80’s, obsessed with the powdered wigs of the French Revolution. The influence came from those times, but I wanted it to be intense and almost fluid.“ However, these new pigments have a clinging factor that is superior to the coloured hair mascaras of the late ‘90s. In addition, they work as well on platinum as they do on dark tresses.

I believe that this, above anything else, will help to sustain our industry. We are currently embracing the Splashlights trend from the fashion and music scene: Imagine a beam of light shining on the hair to create a range of special effects for every client and every length of hair.
I have a background in architecture and graphic design, so I think this has played a role. When you have a strong method, you can create anything you want. It’s like building a house: If you have a detailed plan, you know exactly what you’re getting. On Being an Educator: I love sharing my knowledge with other stylists and colourists so that they too can become better professionals and earn a better living. It’s extremely rewarding. Get Online Already! Whether you’re a new stylist or a salon owner, online training can benefit your business in more ways than one.
A
By Anna Lee Boschetto s hairstylists, you already know that staying up-tothe-moment on the latest techniques is essential to growing your clientele. But making continuing
education a priority may seem like a pipe dream. Enter online training. Even though hands-on experience is a must, there is much to be gained through online education. Here are five reasons why your salon needs to get on board with online training now.
Extend Your Training Budget According to Dino Cairo president of Pivot Point, the accessibility of online education allows salon owners to make their training dollars go further, especially for smaller salons. “You’re seeing more of a switch to this type of training because it gives the classroom.“ Mark Pontrelli, digital education leader for Wella North America, would agree. “Online education allows you to push education throughout the entire year,” he says, adding that you can also gain inspiration that goes beyond learning a specific skill or technique.
Transform Your Business “Education is the key to betterment and success,” says Richard Ashforth, international creative director for Saco, adding that online training is an investment that can also boost your bottom line. “Owners have noticed transformation in their salons and learned techniques that have allowed them to make more money,” says Rebekah Hope, creative education director for HairDesignerTV.com. With over 200 lessons offered through HairDesignerTV, salon owners can take advantage of a full-year membership that will allow their salon team the opportunity to improve techniques all year long. “It’s another venue for training on a constant maintenance basis, which can definitely add to more frequent learning,” she explains.

6 Ways to Kick-Start Your Career With your education complete, salon experts suggest how to start your career in high gear.

hile you’ve likely nailed the technical skills, there’s so much more to becoming a success on the salon floor than what you learned at school. “Ten thousand
hours is a sign that someone has practised at being a professional at something, but practising the wrong things for 10,000 hours doesn’t help,” says Tristan Morrison, senior creative director at Aveda Canada Salon and School Group. Here are six ways to become a salon sensation right from the beginning.
Rise to the Challenge Gaining confidence in the day-to-day aspects of working in a salon is as important as executing a cut for your clients. Stylists need to feel comfortable in the salon environment, in order to respond quickly to real-time situations. “Graduates go from a very secure environment where the teacher is there to help sort out challenges; in the salon, clients expect you to be the professional, and stylists can get nervous
tage is a hub ion Week, backs At New York Fash get a crash ts lis Aveda sty y. of activity where ls for the runwa de mo ing pp course in pre
because they’re on their own,” says Morrison. To counter the anxiety, he encourages senior staff to help the junior ones out, and for students to pay attention to the subtleties of how the salon operates during their apprenticeship.
Show Passion At the Vancouver Hairdressing Academy, Michael Levine teaches students the importance of having the right attitude. “Show your passion and that you’re happy to work, even when it’s not busy,” says Levine. “Be proactive and make things happen—it’s about work ethics with a smile on your face.” The Vancouver Hairdressing Academy offers accelerated curriculum that zones in on salon essentials, including a simplified cutting system. "We teach mastery over four or five things; all of these cuts can be adapted to different lengths,“ says Levine.
Think about what clients expect as soon as they book the appointment.

TIPS FOR UP-AND-COMING HAIRSTYLISTS 1. Do your research and identify the top places where you want to work.
4. Dedicate the early part of your career to finding a mentor.
2. Go into each task with willingness and an “I can” attitude.
5. At this point in your career, don’t expect to be on par with senior stylists. Be competent and take control of the things you can excel at.
3. Learn to put the company first.

Three Reasons to Refine Your Technique “From Damien Carney and Sue Pemberton, I learned a lot about how to move away from the full head of foils. It’s clear that colour has become more about using less foils with the right placement.” –Rosanne Grey, Trends Design Team, Port Alberni, B.C. “Build a better consultation. It's important to look at who the client is, where they work, how much jewellery they wear. It’s true that sometimes you really get tunnel vision, but we need to really look at them from head to toe and get to know the person.” –A.W. “It’s not a job, it’s your career. Clients look to your excitement and, if you can implement even one small technique from what you’ve learned, that expands your reputation as a hairstylist and ultimately helps you build your clientele.” –C.P.
Three Ways to Make Your Nework Connection “To be in a resort, where you know everyone is in the same industry, you can totally relate to everyone. It was interesting to listen to other people’s stories, get different ideas and have a more in-depth discussion. It’s not only for the education; it goes right to the experience of connecting.” –R.G. “When it comes to hairstylists, people want to know the latest trends. Whoever they are, they want to be more stylish. This business is constantly changing. It’s always good to be a couple of steps ahead to really build your business.” –A.W. “From the incredible artists to the beautiful models to the location, I can't say enough of what this did for me. The people were amazing, the hair was incredible and the whole experience taught me a lot as a hairstylist, salon owner and lover of hair.” –D.P.

fter following Edwin and Fiona Johnston as they shared their renovation diaries with SalonMagazine.ca, here's a look inside the new Cutting Room Creative. Now in their new location, the Johnstons and their staff have everything they need, including a major space
upgrade that took them from 1,250 to 2,000 square feet, giving them the chance to create a fresh two-story floor plan. With a focus on modern finishes that offered clean lines, they kept in mind that it’s more important to work with your
space. In fact, the Johnstons say that last thing they chose for the space were the colours. “You can always go back and add furniture or features, but it’s really expensive to change structure.” With the help of the Interior Design Group, a new floor plan was designed. One of the key features in the new salon was the addition of a super-sleek colour bar. Colour canisters are housed in a bank of drawers beneath a glass top, which offers stylists quick and easy access to the colours they need. Incorporating custom built features into the salon ensured

movement and flow.” The salon furniture was sourced from Belvedere Canada, and a few pieces were also sourced from a local millwork company. When it came down to the final decisions, the couple found the Interior Design Group extremely helpful in creating the flow they needed, even if it didn’t match their original vision. “Fiona and I both visualized the reception one way, and the designers had another. It’s clear to me that we should stick to hair and hire the appropriate professional when we need them.” From giving their staff a boost to rave reviews from clients, the renovation has definitely been a positive move, one that will no doubt continue to garner the couple much salon success.

TALK TO YOUR TEAM Find out the type of education your staff is interested in. In doing so, you can ensure that a solid number of your stylists will attend, especially when you’re bringing in an outside educator. FUEL THEIR LEARNING Let’s face it: You can’t focus on learning on an empty stomach. Providing your salon team with lunch, dinner or even a few snacks will not only satisfy their hunger but also make them feel extra appreciated. MAKE IT FUN Look for opportunities to combine training with a little friendly competition. For example, you can encourage your stylists to practise what they learn by hosting mini insalon styling competitions.
