Show Hair

ig, poofy hair is usually not my thing. Even at our annual Contessa Awards, where crazy hair is not only accepted but saluted and embraced, I usually wear my hair down, in long, soft, dark chocolate curls. It’s fast, functional, predictable, and just how I like it. Well, not this year. Maybe I was trying to overcompensate for wearing black to a colour-themed event, but for Contessa 21 I really decided to step out of my box and go for a frizzy, pompadoursilhouetted updo that took about an hour to go up and another good 20 minutes to come back down. I ripped off the look from a Toni&Guy show I had recently seen at Salon International (see picture to the right). Funny, but the girl wearing it looked very subdued and almost understated on-stage—not at all what I felt like when Violet Volovik, co-owner of Bob+Paige salon in Toronto (pictured left), revealed her interpretation of the look about an hour before Contessa show time. I had to ask: “Is it too much?” Violet convinced me to go for it. And I’m glad I did. It was fun, beautifully done and just off-centre enough to add a touch of hairstylist glam to my little black dress.

Labour of Love

e’re so proud to present our 21st annual Contessa Collector’s Edition as it is a great representation of Canadian talent. The Contessas are also a demonstration of the state of the Canadian professional beauty industry. This year, for example, we had a record number of entries and a sold-out show! Competitors spend serious money to enter the Contessas—photo shoots aren’t cheap—and people from all over hop on planes to make it to the gala. To me, this shows a real passion and commitment. Although the salon industry can weather a downturn in the economy better than most, we need to closely evaluate if our business practices are keeping up with the changing marketplace. People are making tough decisions on how to spend their disposable income. Meanwhile, drugstore brands are targeting professional products with the promise of delivering the same quality at lower prices. But the sky isn’t falling! Consumers will continue to shell out for professional services and products because they want to ensure their needs are met. Not convinced? A newer product that has been setting the industry on fire is Montreal-based Moroccanoil, whose sales have been through the roof this year. ”I believe consumers are willing to pay top dollar for products that are unique and efficient. Price point isn’t an issue,” says Alain Jacquaz, VP of H. Chalut Ltée and a Moroccanoil distributor. Throughout 2010, we’ll be reporting on new products and services that are innovative, fast-performing and longer-lasting. Marry this new technology with the commitment and passion we all have for the industry and consumers will continue to frequent salons and seek out professional beauty advice. Still not a believer? Check out the Contessa gala video on salon52.ca and see the heartfelt speeches about the love of this industry.

Colour, an integral facet of the beauty industry, took centre stage at Contessa 21 on Nov. 1 in Toronto. Over 1,000 stylish beauty professionals gathered at the Sheraton Centre Hotel to fête the achievements of their peers and take in three vibrant stage presentations themed around jewels, pastels and neons. The theme was also a nod to the introduction of a new award—Master Colourist—recognizing excellence in a veteran colour technician.

2010 Canadian & British Columbia Hairstylist of the Year CHAD TAYLOR

TEXT MELISSA BRAZIER

Focused on larger-than-life hair, Chad Taylor’s 2010 Contessa collection mixes extreme texture, flamboyant curves and precise cutting with simplicity and continuity. “We’re seeing a lot of volume right now, and I wanted to take that trend and push it further by creating really exaggerated shapes,” says Taylor. Partnering these embellished silhouettes with a colour palette that consists of only jet-black, deep chestnut and pastel blonde, Taylor puts an emphasis on styling and finishing while still creating an imaginative and hauntingly captivating collection of images.

2010 Canadian Salon Team of the Year GLAM SALON BOUTIQUE

With wide grins, the entire team of first-time Contessa winner Glam Salon Boutique agreed that they loved the intensity of collaborative photo shooting. “With four stylists working on the collection, there was a rich energy driving the concept,” says co-owner Olivier Miotto. Meeting once a week over the past year to exchange ideas, the Glam team was inspired by each member’s individuality—from musical preferences to travels around the world. Their unifying idea, showcased with a dark, gothic esthetic, was the revolutionary hairstyles of 1920s America.

Elite Master Hairstylist of the Year

2010 TONY MASCIANGELO

A household name on the photo shoot scene, Toronto-based session stylist Tony Masciangelo took home the coveted, bynomination-only Elite Master Award. A first time Contessa entrant, Masciangelo’s reason for competing this year was twofold: he was honoured to be nominated and wanted to show his salon staff that there’s more than just being behind the chair. Of his winning collection, which featured images shot over the last year for different publications, Masciangelo says, “We’re all eventually going to leave this earth, and I want to leave something behind. I hope someday somebody will look at these images and say they were fashionable and beautiful.”

2010 Makeover and Master Colourist of the Year MICHELLE ATEB

Michelle Ateb discovered a love of colour five years into her career. Twenty-two years later, having received top nods in both Contessa colour categories, her deep passion for this trade is reignited. “My collection is titled Belle Époque. It was a time at the beginning of the 20th century when women really started to explore their hair,” says Ateb. She delved into different colour palettes from white blonde to vibrant red. “I wanted to show a hidden pigment that was glowing from underneath. I did lots of eyelet-shaped panels with diagonal sections so the colours melted together.”

2010 Session Hairstylist of the Year DIANA DAGHER

A relative newcomer to the industry, Diana Dagher never dreamed of winning Session Hairstylist so early in her career. Her collection, originally shot for Paris-based Luxor Magazine, was inspired by the beauty icons of Old Hollywood—women like Audrey Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich. “I love creating looks that I can’t necessarily do in the salon every day,” says Dagher. To achieve her vision of classic beauty, Dagher used a dry finger wave technique, ornate feather hair accessories and a wardrobe of long, elegant gowns.

Texture Hairstylist of the Year SHANE SNOW

According to Shane Snow and Robert Barbosa, Texture and Ontario Hairstylists of the Year, the era of pin-straight hair is over. Working with an array of techniques, like tight perming and ruching, Snow brings big hair back to centre stage. Barbosa, who styled the light-hearted, 70s-inspired collection and encouraged Snow to compete for the first time, also used a variety of tools—everything from chopsticks to toilet paper rolls. Now that Snow has had a taste of competition, he promises, “You’ll see a lot more of me after this.”

“There are so many things you can do with men’s styling,” says Rudy Pignataro, 2010 Men’s Hairstylist of the Year. “Men are becoming more confident every day, and I think we’re seeing a lot more beautiful work in this category.” Pignataro’s collection—titled Emotion—partners sleek and closely cropped looks with a variety of bright fashions. He uses classic techniques with modern sensibilities to portray a bevy of welldressed, sharply coiffed gentlemen.

Working in Toronto’s diverse cityscape, Stacey Staley knows first-hand just how relevant this category is. “Blondes are and always will be my specialty, but this win shows that at Blonde we don’t only do blonde hair,” says Staley. She crafted a collection of images that displays her versatility as a stylist, basing her theme on the soft, romantic styles of the 70s and adding a unique natural element with key wardrobe and accessory pieces.

LINA SHAMOUN

Titled Black, Lina Shamoun’s winning Avant Garde collection was designed to express basic emotion through hair. “I wanted to show emotion and movement in the hair, but not at all on the model’s face. I let the hair say it all,” explains Shamoun. The Kitchener-based stylist worked with three geometric shapes— spherical, oval and square—and juxtaposed texture with smooth sections to build contrast and bold silhouettes.

Danille Mandap’s winning collection captures the essence of youth with asymmetrical shapes and loads of texture. “Two years in a row! Newcomer Hairstylist of the Year AMANDA DICARLO

Amanda DiCarlo’s two greatest teachers, Richard St. Laurent and Lino Patraccone, both taught her an important life lesson: always be yourself. Hence, DiCarlo modelled her 2010 collection, a trio of heavy-fringed, rounded cuts (two pictured above, one on the cover), after her own grunge-referencing style. Now in the industry for nearly two years, DiCarlo competes for another very personal reason: it’s an arena that allows her to really strut her creative stuff.

JESSICA MARIE ELLISON

Having won Nail Art Technician of the Year in 2006 and again in 08, Jessica Marie Ellison decided to surprise everyone this year by entering the Nail Enhancement category. “I also did it to inspire my students at the George Brown School of Makeup and Esthetics. I think it’s important for them to get involved in the industry,” she says. ASHLEY ANN MACKENZIE

The name of Ashley Ann MacKenzie’s collection says it all: 10-Minute Workout. “I took inspiration from fall fashions, which seemed to be very 80s-influenced,” she says, adding that her purpose was to show that nails can be both everyday and high fashion. Playful textures and finishes, paint splatters and charms bring a fun-loving feel to MacKenzie’s winning collection.

2010 Salon Interior Design LOCAL B

Accented with a punchy, magenta-coloured paint-splash graphic, local B’s predominantly white-on-white décor mixes a contemporary esthetic with fun, flirty features. “We were really inspired by the big splashes of colour on the iPod advertising,” says Véronique Beaupré, co-owner of the downtown Montreal salon. Linda Lapointe, Beaupré’s partner and co-owner, adds that they chose that particular pink hue to create a cheerful, girly environment.

Upon entering the 2,500 sq. ft. salon, first-time local B clients will also notice a full service bar and lounge area taking up about a third of the space and offering everything from coffee to wine and cheese. “In a house, the kitchen is always where a party starts, and this is what we’ve created in the salon,” explains Beaupré.

201 Community Service and Salon Business Excellence ZENNKAI SALON

Beyond keeping clients happy, Zennkai’s many locations support a number of causes, from recycling to housing programs. “We strive for excellence everyday,” says Banicevic, adding that education is also an ongoing pursuit in this family of salons. He attributes Zennkai’s success to his amazing team and their unquenchable thirst for knowledge. “I think every day is a learning experience, and that’s what good business is all about. The minute we stop learning, we start to regress.” S

“We put our heart and soul into what we do,” says Mark Banicevic, chairman of the board for The Megahair Family. “Our key to success is honesty, hard work and respecting every single person that comes through our doors.”

Lesson Learned

Farouk Shami, founder of Farouk Systems Inc., has confirmed he will be a candidate for the democratic nomination for Texas governor in the next election. “I started with nothing and built a billion-dollar business,” explains Shami of the motives behind his run. “I am blessed to be a US citizen and a Texan.
