True Inspiration

he Contessas are something I have heard about for ages prior to joining Salon Magazine. I’ve talked about the process of planning such an event, from the flood of entries that come through our door in August, right down to script run-through with our emcee. However, to actually attend the Contessas in the flesh—for the first time—was an experience in itself. This year’s awards captured some of the best Canadian talent in our industry. We are very excited to showcase the work of the Contessa 22 winners in this issue. One of my favourite aspects of the awards is seeing the various forms of inspiration that come through in the collections. I loved how Avant Garde winner Sylvain Bellerose used shoes and boots as the inspiration in his work. Or how Tony Ricci— who won four Contessas this year—used the idea of fantasy to make his collection come to life. One of our guest presenters, renowned celebrity hairstylist Oribe, commented on how “truly inspiring” the awards were. He said, “You Canadians really kill it as hairstylists. The work I saw at the Contessas was very edgy, super stylized and just had an all-around beautiful elegance.” For me, classic sophistication was my inspiration for the Contessa Awards. I’m a huge fan of the television series Mad Men, so I was eager to recreate that ‘60s glamour with my hair and makeup. Oribe (pictured above) mentioned that this decade is all about developing character. When it comes to hair he says anything unusual or individualized is key. His recommendation to any stylist looking for inspiration is to know your icons. “Understand them, know who they are even if you don’t love them and be prepared,” he says. As this is our first issue of 2011, I can’t wait to see the many forms of inspiration that this year will bring.

ach Contessa has its very own vibe and this year’s was absolutely electric! Fabulous hair, beautiful people and outrageous fashion! One of my favourite things about the Contessas is the sense of community that it has created, pulling together a nation of beauty professionals from coast-to-coast to celebrate the tremendous talent in our industry. It’s a night where old friends come together and new friendships are developed. There is nothing more rewarding than to see people like Edwin Johnston from Nanaimo chatting up the gang from the Hair Factory in Newfoundland. The buzz on our Facebook and Twitter pages leading up to the Contessas showed us just how much our beauty community has grown. During the week of the Contessa Gala, our Facebook page had over 4,000 visitors. It was so much fun to see finalists and other readers wishing each other luck and telling us how excited they are to attend the gala. On the night of the event, our staff was actively posting the winners’ names, updates and photos while the awards were being announced. They even posted a photo of the dessert (to which Audrey Adrine Petrosyan commented: “mmm, regret for not being there!”). Tables of industry professionals at the gala were even twittering back and forth to each other, and those who weren’t in attendance were able to feel like they were. In fact, if we didn’t post quickly enough, we were getting heck from our readers! This kind of energy and sense of community is truly amazing. The 22nd annual Contessa gala was all about crowning Canada’s hair royalty. On Nov. 14, the theme Queens came to life onstage at Toronto’s Sheraton Centre Hotel where four majestic presentations interpreted the most iconic female rulers throughout history: Marie Antoinette, Cleopatra, Elizabeth I and the Queen of Sparta. The ballroom was overtaken by more than 1,000 top names in the hair industry to crown the country’s reigning talent in regal fashion. Having landed finalist spots in the Men’s category in previous years, Jaye McLeod took a shot at this year’s Multicultural Hairstylist category and won. “With this collection I wanted to show different techniques for a variety of looks using strong texture and colour. The Afro has that nice deeper colour at the root, fading out to a dusty rose. I also wanted to show a rougher edge on the model by shaving the side. For my other look I used the curly texture to make it look like a tornado. And straight hair on an ethnic woman is always nice. This is the first time I entered the category and my first Contessa win.”

“Since layering clothing is very popular, I thought I’d bring that idea into the hair. I started with the zipper and then I thought, 'What other way can I open up the mane and release a layer of hair underneath?’ Some boots I used for inspiration created a little controversy at home with my wife. I had to say, ‘Honey, I swear to you the boots are for hair, there’s nobody hiding under the bed.’ Referring to the other finalists in this category, Sylvain says, "I'm happy I wasn't a judge because I had my favourites.”

“My inspiration for this collection started with wanting to do black-and-white images and create a Metropolis ambience (the 1927 film masterpiece by director Fritz Lang) with the lighting. I have a love for hair shapes from the mid-70s, so I styled the hair with a ’70s glam. Having won Canadian Salon Team of the Year in 2010, this year I wanted to work alone to see what I could do. Ever since she got her start at Taz Hair Co., Duyen Huynh has wanted to enter the Contessas. “My bosses Frank and Eva have supported and inspired me from the beginning.” Her collection started with the braid, working on variations of what she’s seen done in the past. “The hair cut with the steps came to me when I was sitting on some stairs playing with my son. And the big curls… I didn’t plan for that one. I was just playing with the model’s hair and it happened.”

Trend Vision in Paris The 2010 Trend Vision Award gala was truly a highlight on every hairstylist’s social calendar. The energy and talent was inspiring at the eighth annual event. Picture a colourful parade of flags from around the world on stage, which was a breathtaking sight (especially when the Canadian maple leaf made an appearance). Hosting duties went to Patrick Cameron, who kept everyone laughing, while the winners’ reactions were touching. Over 80 finalists from across the globe came together for the competition. The payoff is pretty big: each winner receives an education program and will be flown to New York for next year’s event. A huge congrats to all the winners! Making Waves Bravo to Wella Professionals who just announced a partnership with UNICEF for a new program called Making Waves. Wella Professionals’ general manager Gabi Schupp said the program will help young people make a living as hairstylists: “one of the most rewarding and passionate of professions.”

Color Zoom Winners’ Circle With over 2,400 stylists and industry experts in attendance, Color Zoom was a world-class celebration. Goldwell hosted its international 2010 event in Paris the weekend of Oct. 9–10. KPSS CEO Anthony Pucciarelli was on hand to crown three lucky winners in the Color Zoom Challenge. Marcela Blechová from Czech Republic took the partner category, Luo Wan Jen from Taiwan won new talent and Neil Barton from the UK took home the top prize for creative colourist. From 400 semi-finalists, 70 national winners were flown to the fashion capital to compete in the event and display their work to an international jury. All three winners will join Goldwell’s creative team to work on the next Color Zoom publication. Representing Canada was Michelle Pargee, Milica SalonSpa, Langley, BC for Creative Colorist, Justine Fernandez of Timothy & Co.
