Looking Back, Moving Forward

A

s I write, several weeks after the 28th annual Contessa Awards gala, the holiday season is in full swing and a fresh new year is around the corner. But before we begin

planning for Contessa 2018 (yes, we really do begin planning in January!), we’re looking back on video highlights and, of course, the finalists and winning collections. I’m always intrigued by what compels hairstylists to create a collection. Having spoken with some of the industry’s top talent, I’ve realized that each entrant is an equally passionate artist. A photo collection is a personal reflection of what inspires hairstylists creatively as artists, which makes it pretty special that so many of them share their work so openly with us and their peers.

On both a personal and professional level, Contessa entrants know not only what it takes to create a collection but also what it means to put it into the public domain. As this year’s Fan Favourite winner, Pete Goupil, underscored, being recognized by your peers for your art is always an exciting and emotional experience. As a new year gets started, now’s the time to start thinking about how you might want to begin again. Whether you’re thinking of entering the Contessas or simply directing your energy and passion into a new collection, we’re always excited to learn about new projects that are taking place across the country. It’s an exciting time as we move into 2017, we’re looking forward to sharing the excitement with you.

For this year’s onstage presentations, Moroccanoil and Aveda Canada truly brought their A-game, with outstanding work that wowed our audience. Being part of the Contessas for the first time, I loved the personal compliment that Moroccanoil’s Robert Hamm shared with me. Not only did he enjoy the whole experience but he also felt that the Contessas is a very different kind of event— one that he dubbed as classy—adding that our guests were so stylish and well polished. Julie Vriesinga “I’ve dreamed about this moment since I started hairstyling 10 years ago, so this is a huge deal for me. I love everything about ’70s style, so I really wanted to channel some iconic women: of course, the amazing Farrah Fawcett, with that gorgeous feathered and flicked hair off the face; the look of a stacked perm made modern and a short wedge with a soft wave. Hair colour was becoming more popular in the ’70s but still natural, so I kept the hair colours soft and sun-kissed.”

This was my third collection, and I have learned from past experience that picking the right models is really important because once you do the hair and step back, it’s the photographer and model working together.”

Florencia Taylor “I was inspired by human beauty, by every woman. Pink tones, natural tones and how we can be whomever we want once we put our makeup on and feel confident. This win means a lot to me— I’ve been working for this for a long time. It’s been a big dream for me since I came to this country 15 years ago. To win the Canadian Makeup Artist of the Year means the world to me. I will just keep doing what I love, which is makeup, and see what comes of it.”

Nargis Khan “I just wanted to do something different that hasn’t been done before. My inspiration was New Age, so millennials really inspired me because they are into those neon, psychedelic colours. I’m not always a very girlie person; I’m more into edgy, bold patterns, lines and graphics. For the black and white nails, I wanted them to kind of look like an optical illusion. I love that the Contessas is one of the only platforms where you can show your true creative expression. Seeing your vision come alive is awesome!”

I had a strong reaction to Jeremy Scott’s Moschino collection, with the mix of colour and textures, and with this collection there were strong colours and a lot of freehand painting. One of the hairstyles is a short fade, which integrates a men’s look and women’s look because we’re all one, while the bun style is more streetwear—a lot of my inspiration comes from the streets and up-andcoming generations. They create their own look and personalize it, so I take a lot of inspiration from that.”

Bonding Beyond Create dynamic colour while protecting bonds with the new Igora Royal Highlifts Blondes by Schwarzkopf Professional.

ince incorporating the brand’s patented Fibre Bond Technology into its Igora Royal Highlifts Blondes Permanent Color Crème, it’s become a real game changer for colourists. Now, Schwarzkopf Professional is introducing two new shade directions: 10-21 and 10-14. “Many people who would go platinum blonde are trying to avoid warmth at all costs,” says Susan Boccia, education manager for Schwarzkopf Professional Canada. “The 10-21 is for anyone looking for the ultimate, icy, classic platinum blonde. It has a primary and secondary tone of ash to control all the warmth in the hair.” For a softer look, the 10-14 is slightly warmer for a more natural, beige-blonde colour. “People tend to go a bit warmer in the winter because we don’t have as much colour in our skin, and go a little cooler and lighter in the summer,” says Boccia. “The 10-14 is primarily a violet ash with a little bit of beige. For someone who isn’t afraid of a little bit of a soft caramel or creamy beige, having the dash-1 in that formula will control the natural pigments so the beige doesn’t make the hair too warm or brassy.” The new Igora Royal Highlifts Blondes with Fibre Bond Technology eliminates the need for N°1 Bond Booster of the brand’s Fibreplex bonding system, since it’s already mixed into the colour tube. But the N°2 Bond Sealer is used after the colour to seal in the bonds, while the N°3 Bond Maintainer and sulfate-free Shampoo are used as maintenance to build bonds, keep the cuticle closed and lock in colour. “Having the technology already built in, you don’t have to think about how much protection you need or how much you need to put in. All you have to do is mix it the way you normally would and apply,” explains Boccia. “The formulations and the end results are much more cleaner and crisper, with unbelievably soft and strong hair.”
