F
or the first time this year, I had the chance to speak with many of you on the Contessa Awards red carpet, and share in your excitement in anticipation of the awards ceremony.
It gave me the chance to have a different conversation with many of you, to learn a bit more about your work, and to meet new and established members of the salon teams—even a few who talked

about being inspired to enter next year. Many of you also shared your first Contessa experience with me, commenting on whether you won an award or not, how you were awestruck at meeting someone whose work you’ve long admired, or how your jaw dropped at the work that was presented onstage. Over the years in this gig, I’ve spoken with many hairstylists, makeup artists and nail technicians, many of whom have been Contessa winners and finalists. Throughout this time, I’ve realized that artists look at the world through a very different lens. It is both exciting and mind-boggling to wrap my head around the fact that you always seem to be thinking about hair. Whether you’re travelling rural roads in another country or exploring homegrown urban landscapes, there’s always a part of you pondering how to translate what you’re seeing into the hairstyling arena. It’s this insatiable desire to create that keeps our industry strong, so my heartfelt thanks go to each and every person making it their mission to blow past the borders of the expected and take a chance on the uncertain. You inspire us all!

a necessity, and it’s what makes the salon experience memorable. When it comes to the Contessa Awards gala, I like to think of it
Many salon owners choose to arrive with their team that night, and every beauty pro knows that we are all in this together. Contessa night encourages exactly that, and is definitely a well-deserved celebration that brims with pride! Quite possibly my favourite part of the night is seeing the instant, unscripted reaction from winners and hearing their speeches, which often include a similar refrain: “Winning a Contessa means so much to me!” These words birth motivation in any hairstylist who dreams of entering—and possibly becoming the next big success story. And in a way, everybody wins, but most importantly, the salon industry thrives. My heartfelt congratulations go out to all the winners and finalists on for their beautiful collections, and for making each Contessa gala a night to remember!

“This has become my favorite styling product to use on my clients with short to medium-length fine hair, for sure. With just a little bit of product, I can create a sleek finished look or any kind of movable, textured style that I want. This styling crème seems to plump the hair a bit for extra volume while the semi-matte finish means that there’s no leftover scalp shine in areas of lower density. I love it!”

The Colour of Fashion Inspiration comes from everywhere, and for the Moroccanoil team, ’80s runway looks combined with highimpact colour made for a modern and youthful presentation. By combining intricate details, with loose-unstructured texture, the movement in the hair kept the focus on the richness of colour. Dramatic lighting and amped up music set the tone for a captivating presentation.

You Get What You Give In the spirit of giving back, the Contessa Awards partnered with Movember for a barbering and moustache grooming challenge. Three barbers showed off their men’s grooming skills and had fun playing up their clients’ best features while raising awareness for Movember’s latest initiative, a training program for barbers that helps them start the conversation with their clients about men’s mental health. Cocktail party attendees were able to donate to Movember in exchange for a part of the Contessa 2018 Finalist gallery. A portion of Contessa ticket sales was also donated to Movember.

ABOUT: After training in the U.K., Tsang moved to Canada and opened Blushes salon in Ottawa with his wife, Dorothy. Tsang has been competing for more than a decade and, along with Dorothy, continues to push himself to achieve his dreams. “I’m not the kind of person to give up,“ he says. ”No matter what happens in your life, you can make your dreams happen.” INSPIRATION: In this collection, Tsang was influenced by ’80s punk, but wanted to create something modern, beautiful and wearable with soft, lovable colour. “I wanted you to have that feeling [you get] when you see many different tones of a sunset, from the orange to the pinks and the purples,” says Tsang. While he recognizes that hair competitions are meant to inspire other hairstylists, Tsang also looks to inspire his clients to take on this softer, modern style that has a bit of an edge.

ABOUT: Being situated in a small community has been a very good thing for Dragonfly Salon.“Everybody in our town supports us, so it’s very lovely to be able to represent our community,” says salon owner Julie Carr, who has been an Aveda educator for more than a decade and has previously entered competitions as an individual hairstylist. INSPIRATION: With a young team, Carr was really inspired by the freshness of their ideas and overall perspective. “I just feel that the youth of today have such amazing outlooks and their minds see the world in a completely different way.” Along with her team, Carr says the whimsical shapes and styles that are the upcoming fashion trends inspired the looks for this collection.

ELIT E M AS T ER HAIRS T Y LIS T of the year
Silas Tsang “From all the amazing, talented hairstylists and peers, to win this award is such a great honour, and such an incredible feeling.” INSPIRATION: On his travels through Japan, Tsang had a moment where he was struck by the architecture of the cities he was visiting, especially Tokyo. “I’m always taking photos that I can translate to hair, and travel is big for me,” he says. With strong textures and architectural elements in this collection, Tsang focused on showcasing the precision of his techniques, which he believes is important for someone to compete at this level. DID YOU KNOW? Tsang’s photographer, John Rawson, was his instructor 30 years ago. In the mid-’90s, Rawson, a hairstylist himself, turned his focus behind the camera, capturing the work of hairstylists around the world. Tsang and Rawson have now worked together on several collections.

Michelle Finlayson “I love hair colour; I love playing and trying new things. If you’re trying to push yourself, you have to take risks. This is a huge honour because, from the competitors to everyone who enters, the work is so good.” ABOUT: A Schwarzkopf Professional Essential Looks Artist, Michelle Finlayson has been creating hair collections for more than 10 years. This is her second consecutive win for Master Colourist of the Year. INSPIRATION: For this collection, Finlayson wanted to create a retro vibe with a twist. “I wanted to pay homage to clean, classic styling and colour,” she says. “I wanted a bit of a ’90s vibe to it, but it almost ended up being a mix of decades between the ’60s and ’90s—even with a little Janet Jackson vibe.” DID YOU KNOW? Finlayson’s photographer, Con Boland, asked her to work on this collection, which was their first time working together. Boland has since passed away. Finlayson honoured him in her acceptance speech. “We worked on this collection and I just remember he was so excited to do a Contessa shoot. And he was like, ‘Michelle, let’s get ’em, let’s win an award.’”

Rossa Jurenas “Motivation, passion and building ourselves up, that’s what this is about. As I step up my game, I’m really hoping to inspire other people to challenge themselves, too.” ABOUT: As a past Contessa winner, Rossa Jurenas is always looking for new ways to improve her craft. “You’re always looking at your work and thinking you can do better,” she says. With her salon in Tillsonburg, Ont. and her role as Schwarzkopf Professional’s North American creative colour director, Jurenas continues to have plenty of opportunities to collaborate and get creative on and off set, which is what keeps her energized and ready for whatever is next. INSPIRATION: Jurenas’ focus for this collection was on pushing her techniques to the next level, rather than a specific theme. “This was more of a personal challenge,” she says. “Showing healthy, strong, beautiful results.” As Jurenas grows as a colourist, she finds that a focus on the technical side is what allows her to refine her skill-set.

Uros Mikic “I am honoured to receive this prestigious award. It’s such an amazing feeling; realizing your collections are relevant globally.” ABOUT: Originally from Slovenia, Mikic has worked in the hair industry for more than 20 years. In addition to his role as creative director for Matrix Australia, Mikic has worked around the world and has been internationally recognized for his editorial hair prowess. INSPIRATION: Combining edgy hair colour with sharp cuts for this collection, Mikic's source of inspiration was out of this world. "I was inspired by the space nebulas and constellations," he says. "The soft colours and intriguing patterns, enriching strong cuts and styling with unique colour blends." DID YOU KNOW? Before becoming a hairstylist, Mikic wanted to be a professional rugby player. In addition to travelling around the world for the sport, he has become the hairstylist for some of Australia’s best-known rugby teams.

MEN’S HAIRS T Y LIS T of the year
Yanick ChartrandKravitz “Last year, our salon made it into the finalists for Interior Design, and this year I won a Contessa. I think it really proves to my clients that we are very active in the industry. This tells them that they are in good hands when they get their hair cut and styled. This Contessa will really help build my clientele and attract others —no doubt about it!” ABOUT: Yanick Chartrand-Kravitz has been a hairstylist for 15 years, a Goldwell educator for four years and in 2015, he was a Canadian finalist for the American Crew All-Star Challenge. He is known for his short haircuts, and loves technical challenges. INSPIRATION: The Canadian tuxedo. “I was inspired by the Calvin Klein looks of the early ’90s and had all my models wear denim. I also wanted to look back to this time with longer, more textured hair. I definitely worked hard and took a very pragmatic approach to make sure the artistic direction was coherent throughout the collection.”

SESSION HAIRS T Y LIS T of the year
Duyen Huynh “With the session category, there is no box with it, so you have the freedom to create anything. There is no right or wrong when it comes to artistry.” ABOUT: A hairstylist for more than a decade, Duyen Huynh says her win this year has inspired her to continue competing. “It is an achievement that I feel amazing about. It’s another building block in my career.” As a freelance hairstylist, Huyen enjoys collaborating with other artists, along with the freedom that session work encourages. INSPIRATION: Having created the collection for Culture magazine, Huynh says the only real direction was that the looks were for spring and needed to be more sculptural. “When I thought about it, I knew I really wanted to play on the sleek, sculptured looks, but then I was able to add some softness with texture.” When it comes to getting inspired for a creative photo shoot, Huynh says the Spanish-based artists known as Xpression are one of her go-to sources.

It’s an honour to have other people appreciate your work and I’m very thankful.” ABOUT: A hairstylist for nearly 15 years, Robin Bacon remembers attending the Contessa Awards for the first time in 2006, and watching her now-mentor Rossa Jurenas win her Canadian Hairstylist of the Year award. “It’s crazy my life path, and how Rossa has become a mentor to me as a colourist,” says Bacon. INSPIRATION: Citing her love of science, Bacon’s collection was inspired by NASA’s Instagram. “I kept seeing cloud formations that burst into colour called nebulas,” she explains. “It’s the explosion of colour that I was trying to recreate.” As part of her colour technique, Bacon says she moved the hair Robin Bacon, Giovanni & Perri, Barrie, Ont.
