Better Together
Words can’t express how I feel about the highly anticipated return of our beloved Contessa Awards gala. Even as I write this letter, I’m filled with emotion. Hosting the Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards as a virtual event for two years was an eye-opening experience. But as we all know, nothing replicates the feeling of attending a live and in-person celebration. The Contessas is so much more than a competition; it’s a chance for us to reconnect after all this time and mingle with colleagues and beauty pros from across the country. Seeing all the camaraderie is truly awe-inspiring and one of the things I love most about our industry. From the beaming smiles and heartfelt emotions of the winners and finalists to the pride and joy experienced by the sponsors and attendees, I know how fortunate we are to continue to be Canada’s largest professional beauty celebration that’s recognized around the world.
As our team works hard on the planning and execution of the Contessas throughout the year, it’s so rewarding for us to see how important the platform is to our community. For 34 years, it’s been a creative beacon for so many, and it brings so much joy to our entire team.
A big congratulations to all of this year’s winners and finalists! You’ve each wowed and inspired us all and make us so incredibly proud.
I also want to extend a special thank you to our generous sponsors, who help us bring the event to life each year. A shout-out to our presenting teams, Rodrigo Araneda of Matrix and Dana Lyseng of Wella Company, along with Norm Wright who created our exclusive Contessa 2023 show opener. (You can learn more about each of these presentations, starting on page 47).
A common thread throughout this year’s event was the power of unity. One of my 2023 resolutions is for us to continue to help unite the industry. With so much loss and separation experienced over the past few years, it’s so important for us all to realize how much stronger we are as a community. Division is not the answer. Now is the time to share your skills and knowledge to mentor others and uplift the next generation while continuing to learn and push your own creative boundaries. There’s so much left to discover. Why stop now?

CANADIAN HAIRSTYLIST OF THE YEAR
Tony Ricci
Ricci Hair Co. Edmonton, Alta. @hairbytonyricci
“
“It’s just so amazing. I’ve won this award nine times, and this is probably the best one that I’ve ever won.”
Inspiration
“The collection is called Goth, so it was a church backdrop that we used. During COVID, I couldn’t travel and shoot with a photographer, so I had to do the photography myself. I had to find the models and do the wardrobe and everything at home. It’s been amazing to see the talent we have in our backyard and to realize that you don’t really have to travel to get the quality of work that you want.”
No End in Sight
“My son asked me the other day, ‘How long are you going to do this for?’
I don’t know, but I honestly do it from the bottom of my heart. I’ve made a lot of mistakes, and this just tells me that I truly love what I do.”
Tony Ricci
Ricci Hair Co. Edmonton, Alta. @hairbytonyricci
“
“Working behind the chair, you’re a craftsman and you create for other people. At the Contessas, you create for yourself. You’re an artist so you just have to do what you love to do. When you do what you love to do, you’ll always come up ahead.”
Inspiration
“Everything was dark because it was at a time when everything with COVID was happening, so there was an eerie feeling. Everything was sort of down, so that’s what I was going for, but I wanted to inspire people at the same time.”
Surrounded by
Support “I always work with the best team and everybody around me just pushes me to a different level. If you don’t have people who can push you to a different level, you can never get to a higher level. You just have to work with a team that wants to be in the same place that you want to be.”
Michelle Oliver & Quinn Enright
Freelance Edmonton, Alta. @michelleoliverhair @theboldsaint
Collaborative Spirit
“This collection was a true partnership. I did the texture, cuts and styles, but all the colour was done by my teammate and best friend, Quinn. We did the wardrobe styling together and created everything from scratch and used our own clothes. We just let each other be free, do our thing, and we didn’t put a lot of pressure on it. We played and had fun, and it turned into something great.”

Michelle OliverStronger Together
“It’s a dream come true. We’ve worked on this forever and it’s been a true collaboration. It’s so incredible to have won this with my best friend. When you create with someone else, you create something new. It forces you to grow together and it humbles you. You really get to enjoy the ride, and I think it’s really one of the best things that you can do.”
— Quinn Enright“When you collaborate with someone else, I think it inspires you to create a collection that might be outside of your comfort zone.”
Inspiration
“It was really just freedom. A lot of this was new to me; I’ve done two fades on textured hair and this was my second one. I’ve never entered Texture before so it’s all new to me. I’m just so honoured.”
Importance of Inclusion
“Working on diverse textures is such an amazing way to express our artistic creativity. It pushes us with our technique. It’s so important to have inclusion and diversity in what we represent because that is our country. This is Canada! This is what we’re made up of. I always push to have both of those things in all of my work and collections. It pushes me to be a better hairstylist and more well rounded, so I’m just extremely proud and it means a lot.”
““No one can become an amazing hairstylist without taking time outside of the salon to work on their skills, and that includes embracing diversity, texture and inclusion.”
Quinn Enright
Freelance Edmonton, Alta. @theboldsaint
“This category is giant! To be even a finalist this year was a win for me, so to bring this win home is a complete shock. I can’t believe it.”
Inspiration
“This was my second collaboration with Michelle. We really just wanted to have fun. We planned less and had more fun. For me, with colour, I really wanted to focus on the individuality and simplicity of hair colour and how it can be really beautiful.”
Creative Process
“I love art. I love fashion. This is a way to express yourself in no other way. It’s complete freedom. It’s probably the most enjoyable creative process that you can be a part of.”
CANADIAN SALON TEAM
Salon Espace K
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. @salon_espace_k
““Teamwork is what makes the dream work. Without our amazing team, we couldn’t achieve any of this.”
Inspiration
“The inspiration was The Devil Wears Prada. We really wanted to interpret five affluent, powerful women in the fashion industry going to the Met Gala. It was about five powerful fashionistas going to a party.”
Dream Team
“These were drawings we did during the pandemic, trying to stay connected as a team. We thrive off each other’s energy and throughout everybody’s highs and lows. Each of us has a strength and we grow through each other’s strengths. This [win] is in believing that, together, there’s nothing you can’t achieve.”

Inspiration
“It’s a little sentimental with everything going on last year—not only with the pandemic but also I broke my foot and had to have a massive surgery. While in recovery, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. One day, I saw a double rainbow and it was the clearest colouring I had ever seen in my entire life that I had a whole different vision of what I was going to do for my collection. Once I got [to the photo shoot] and started colouring hair, those were the colours that came to me as the primary and secondary colours. Sometimes you see something and it just changes your vision and that’s what you decide to go with.”
Creative Outlet
“I love being behind a chair, but sometimes we get into the same thing over and over again. Entering Contessa is about getting your own creativity out. We all have it; we just have to showcase it and it gives us that little bit of
kick we need. As artists, that’s why we got into the industry, to make people feel beautiful, and sometimes we just need that more artistic side to things.”

“This win is very emotional. It’s a good feeling because during the pandemic I did a lot of creative work as I couldn’t work on clients in the salon. Being able to create new work is what kept me going through the financial and emotional stress of the pandemic.”
Inspiration
“This collection is inspired by the architecture from Brasília, which is the capital of Brazil. It was built in the mid-century and it’s very modern. I really kept its architecture in mind when I was creating every part of this collection. One of my looks was directly inspired by a famous cathedral they have there, and we even decided that we wanted the wardrobe to have structure and texture to it.”
Limitless Possibilities
“I love the Session category because I feel like it gives me more freedom. I can play with the hair, makeup and wardrobe, and it doesn’t have to be all about the hair. I like that you don’t have to create collections that are too finished or coloured for
this category; it can be more organic and modern. I love working with textured hair because you can really build anything. This is the world that we live in. We have to be able to open the door to all clients.”

Roberts Salon Beverley, U.K. @rickrobertshair“
“I try to take all the skills I’ve learned over the years and put them into the shoot. I always say hair is just a material, so working with all hair types is important to me.”
Inspiration
“I would describe my work as very spontaneous and creative. I take inspiration from things and hairstyles I see around the world. For this collection, I was inspired by beautiful hair. I wanted it to be very floaty and for it to look like it was shot on the streets of Rome or any beautiful city around the world. I wanted the models to look effortlessly great.”
No Borders
“Competitions push you as an individual and as a brand. While it doesn’t come without its losses, I’ve lost a lot over the years, but I’ve always come back stronger and better than ever. Sometimes you need to lose competitions to win competitions; the losses help make you the hairdresser you are today. That’s why I have never given up and now have awards from around the world.”

AVANT GARDE HAIRSTYLIST Martin Menard Salon La Loge Québec, Que. @mart.menard“
“I pushed my limits even more and worked with things, like extensions, that I don’t normally do. I had to sew in the hair, which was very new to me, and I think doing that will allow me to do something different again next year.”
Inspiration
“I wanted this collection to look similar to Indigenous art. It was also inspired by the movie Prey, which came out this year. In the movie, the main character is a strong female and I was inspired by her power, so I wanted to create a collection that showcased feminism.”
Family First
“For my wife, Josianne, and I, it’s all about family. We spend all our time with our kids; they are with us when we shoot our collections. They see us work so hard, so bringing two of our kids with us to the Contessas was our way of showing them that when you put your heart and soul into what you’re doing, it pays off.”

Inspiration
“I really enjoyed looking at Japanese competition work, specifically the shapes and structure. I took a little bit of that and refined it to be a little bit more my style and aesthetic, so I kept it nice and monotoned. I’m really fortunate that one of my best friends is a makeup artist and could bring in pops of colour to make it not so harsh.”
Advice for the Next Generation
“Don’t give up. I went through such a phase where I was unhappy with my work because my eye was outpacing my skill, so you want to really work on your skills until they match your aesthetic and your eye because you will get there.”

“
“Showing other people what’s possible—and women who are older that it’s never too late—always means a lot to me. Also, I want to show younger people that it’s not unachievable if you’re willing to work for it.”
Inspiration
“Every year, I try to do something I’ve never done before. In the last two years, I’ve done more horizontal colour placement as opposed to melts and vertical placements. I wanted it to be more simple and less complicated, so each one looks more monochromatic. I called this collection Satin because I think the hair looks like satin and that’s why I chose that wardrobe to go with it.”
Spreading the Love
“I have a large network of people who either I assist or assist me. We all want each other to do well—it’s not competitive among us at all. People don’t always believe that, but it’s really true. I couldn’t care less if I win something; I’m much more excited for my friends.”
“I think about colours, haircuts and shapes, almost every single day. I’m constantly training myself and looking for inspiration and vibes from different things.”
“
Inspiration
“I’m constantly creating mood boards, and I had this mood board in my repertoire for a long time. I sort of stumbled in fear of just getting out there, doing it and putting it together. Finally, this past spring, I decided that I have to do this for myself, so I just put it all out there and thankfully it all came together.”
Beginner’s Luck
“I’ve always looked up to the Contessa Awards as an outlet to showcase our work. For me, it was just to go and put myself out there face-forward to the industry. The experience has been amazing!”

““This award is extra-special this year because it’s after we were closed for so long and couldn’t connect with each other. Being at the Contessas and hearing my name as the winner was just the most unbelievable thing.”
Inspiration “X-presion Creativos was a huge inspiration for this collection. I’m always so inspired by their work and how they make hair into true art, not only through colour but also through texture. I knew I wanted to do some sort of basket weaving and braiding for this collection. I had never attempted it before, but I’ve always been into arts and crafts so I thought I could do it. I went with it and, luckily, it worked out.”
All About the Journey
“Every single year that I’ve competed, I feel like I just accomplished something huge, so it doesn’t really matter if I win or not. It’s a nice thing to have, but I want to set a great example for our
team, so they know that there’s so much more out there than just working behind the chair, and encourage them to put themselves out there, bring out their creative side and step outside the box.”

““The name of this collection is Candy Crush, and it’s a little inspired by cotton candy—the texture and how it’s light and airy. I focused on textures and shapes, and I wanted to play with vibrant colours to make it more playful.”
Sticking with It
“I’ve been entering for more than 20 years [and first won this award more than 10 years ago]. While it’s always slightly crushing to not make it to semis or finals, it’s never deterred me from entering— you’re only competing against yourself. And when you do make it to semis or finals, you’re with the best of the best in Canada, which is incredible. These people inspire me, and when I get to be in the same category as them, it’s a win in itself.”
“I’m not really inspired by my surroundings. I just look at colours and they tell me what to do.”

QUEBEC HAIRSTYLIST
Michael Dubuc Salon Style M Drummondville @mick_dub_hair“
“Working with my team was an extraordinary experience. I’m so honoured to be named Quebec Hairstylist of the Year.”
Inspiration
“I was looking for something that was very retro, with inspiration from the ’60s. I wanted it to have a very vintage look, so Hotel California style really illustrates the whole inspiration for my collection very well. For the colours, I was inspired by more modern looks—the looks we now see in 2022—but since I was aiming for a vintage ’60s look, I wanted very bright colours but also something soft and warm.”
Stage Debut
“[Working on Matrix’s Contessa presentation] was one of the best experiences for me. There’s so much talent on our team and we worked hard to deliver a big show. I am really honoured to work backstage on the show. It was quite a beautiful day.”
Alicia Langille
Inspiration
“This collection, which I called Dark Fairy Tale, was inspired by many things and really came from wanting to showcase the strength of femininity in our society. I wanted to use strong shapes and colour placements to tell the story of female empowerment, which I think is so important. When I was selecting the photos, the strong female figures had a vulnerability that really reminded me of a fairy tale.”
Building Self-Confidence
“For me, competing isn’t so much about competing against other people; it’s more about putting myself out there and proving to myself that I can do it. I’ve been in the industry for more than 20 years now, and the Contessas have always been a dream for me. I’ve entered before, but it’s been a long time, so to accept this award is huge. I think the biggest thing is to not give up and to not doubt yourself.”
“You can’t measure your self-worth based on whether or not you win or where you think you fall against the competition.”
MEN’S HAIRSTYLIST
Ben Barkworth
JustB Salon Toronto, Ont.
@ben_barkworth““I’ve entered this category eight times. Everyone who is considering entering or who has entered before, do not give up. As long as you stay true to yourself, you’re already winning.”
Inspiration
“This collection was inspired by the United Kingdom, which is where I’m from. I wanted it to have an east-side London vibe from the ’90s because there was a lot of freedom, and people were expressing their individuality. It was important to me to include texture and diversity because, as leaders in this industry, we have to set an example and celebrate all diversities and backgrounds.”
Freedom to Create
“The Contessas is a different avenue for creativity. Creating collections is different than working behind the chair or on set because it allows me to use a different part of my brain and a different type of creativity that I don’t get to do every day. It’s a very vulnerable space, but it’s also a very rewarding space.”

““This has been a dream of mine for so long; it’s a huge honour! This is my 10th year as a hairstylist and makeup artist. I’ve been entering for years so it’s really cool to feel like all my hard work has paid off.”
Inspiration
“I would say fashion was my primary inspiration for this collection. I like to thrift shop and I love fashion, so my makeup is always inspired by clothes. If I see a pattern or texture, I usually translate that to makeup. I’m such a fan of clean makeup, so I would say whatever you’re entering, make it clean and perfect.”

Inspiration
“Bio Sculpture Gel Canada has a neon collection called Live Life Loudly. I was looking online for neon colours to use on my daughter because I wanted to recreate the look on her face. When I saw that collection, I thought about Avatar and that led to me wanting to create a female profile on each set and then recreate it on her face. It kind of just snowballed from there.”
Family Affair
“It was my son who photographed the images— he’s so talented. My daughter was the model, and she had a lot of patience. The Avatar look took seven hours, and it was funny because I noticed that I couldn’t get the paint off my hands when I was painting the ears, so in that moment I realized my daughter was still going to be blue the next day. And she was, but she was a trooper. She committed and each look turned out so amazing. It was such an awesome experience.”

The Cause “Indigenous Voices in Fashion organizes the event, and, every year, The REDress Project takes place to honour the murdered and missing. It’s a movement that started in 2010 by a Metis woman named Jaime Black. The fashion show is held every two years to raise awareness, and it’s an opportunity to work with local designers and see their incredible beadwork. It’s very impactful for us. We also did the hair for all 30 Indigenous models. In addition to raising awareness, the whole purpose behind the fashion show is to create a beautiful expression and platform for the Indigenous community to showcase their work and fashion.”
Bringing People Together
“I feel like giving back creates community. It’s not all about standing behind the chair, making your money and then
closing the shop at the end of the day. We have a voice to be part of a community and to help that community move forward. I also feel like when you bring people together in a community, you create something so beautiful and rewarding. Instead of it being so individually focused as a salon, you’re now focusing on collaborating with others.”
“If you know in your heart that you want to give back and you create a culture for that in your salon, things just come your way.”Photos: Gary Ridsdale
“The Canadian audience—the stylists—is who I respect most,” he says. “They’re the ones I get my inspiration from. I follow people like X-presion and Michael Polsinelli, but the people I relate to and whose respect I want to gain is the Canadian audience. This has always been a dream of mine, and that’s why I really pushed myself this time. This is the honour of my career.”
Kinetic
For the exclusive Contessa 2023 show opener, multi-Contessa-winning hairstylist Norm Wright created an out-of-this-world, avant-garde presentation. Inspired by Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen and American kinetic sculptor Anthony Howe, Wright used fibre optics and learned binary, syntax and robotics, as well as welding and 3D printing, to create the hair and even some of the wardrobe!
“Salon and the Contessas have played an integral part in furthering my curiosity and career,” he says.
“Now, I think it’s my responsibility to remind people that originality isn’t dead.”
“If we want to honour our craft, we have to embrace growth, new things and honing your craft. The only way to do that is not to limit yourself to one thing,” he says. “Change is imminent. We work five to six days to make changes to people’s hair, and the irony is people are just banking on one style to do that. My main priority is to leave the hair world better than I found it.”
“I think we’ve all become complacent because of COVID and I find people getting comfortable with things that are familiar,” he says. “So when I create collections, I have a criteria with three things: I could never have done it before, it has to scare the crap out of me, and I have to pull it off like I’ve been doing it my whole life.”
“I’ve always believed that if another human can excel at it, I can at least try to excel at it,” he says. “Because of my criteria, my failure ratio is 95 per cent. However, coming to terms with that and accepting it is very liberating. Failure is learning, and when I think about what I was scared of in 2015 compared to what I’m scared of now, it’s awesome. If you’re not nervous, you’re not human. All I know is I left nothing on the table.”
Celebration for All
For Matrix Canada’s Contessa 2023 stage presentation, led by artistic director Rodrigo Araneda, the brand’s artistic team focused on three classic hair looks: ponytails, braids and texture. From short to long hair and updos to afros, the presentation featured bold colours, gender-neutral styles and statement-making textures. The team included a wide range of models and hair types to emphasize their brand ethos of promoting diversity and inclusion in the beauty industry.
|
“I’m an immigrant from Chile and I’m gay, so inclusivity is very important to me,” says Araneda.
“I love working for Matrix because they always promote inclusivity and accessibility. I want to be represented, and I want others to be represented as well.”
—
“What I want people to take away is that from something simple, like a ponytail or a braid, you can create magic,” he says. “You can start from that simple idea and create something beautiful. It’s kind of like when you plant a small seed in the ground and then a huge tree grows from it.”
“I was happy to present [at last year’s Contessas] and even though it was online and virtual, it was still an amazing experience. I’ve always dreamed of presenting [onstage] in front of the industry, so this year has been a dream come true.”
Matrix Canada’s artistic team
Heidi Kenney, Francis
Wierzbicki,
worked collectively with Araneda to bring their presentation to life. “We decided as a team and brainstormed together,” he says. “I think it’s really important to give each person their place and take everyone’s ideas.” |
and
Working with Pascal & Jeremie for the wardrobe, the presentation consisted of vibrant, high-fashion pantsuits and dresses adorned with feathers, tulle, sequins and faux fur.
The United Colors of Wella
Wella Company returned to the Contessa live stage with a powerful presentation led by Wella Top Artist Dana Lyseng of Supernova Salon in North Vancouver. Inspired by the idea of unity and inclusivity in light of the pandemic, Lyseng wanted to celebrate the beauty of self-expression with diversity and inclusion with a range of hair and body types. “I’m already middle-aged at a time when individuality is starting to be celebrated,” she says. “I do hair behind the chair every day and I always hear women speaking so negatively about themselves. We need to stop talking like that about ourselves. We’re all exactly who we need to be and exactly where we need to be.”
“I’m past the point of trying to fit in,” says Lyseng. “I’m raising a daughter and I want her to know that however she looks and whatever her natural state is, she’s perfect. I think it’s a big message right now for people to stop trying to be what they think is ‘normal’ and thinking that they have to be that to be beautiful.”
“One of the great things about Wella is that it’s a global company and we’re colouring people’s hair all over the world,” she says. “What I want everybody to take away from the presentation is the concept that everybody is beautiful. Everybody with every different shape, size, height, hair type or texture or skin colour is amazing and beautiful. My presentation is really about embracing that and owning that power within yourself.”
“Salon and the Contessa Awards are a very important community to me, and I was very honoured to be part of this presentation,” she says. “I love being part of my Wella family, and to do something like this is a very big deal to me.”
Lyseng divided her presentation into three segments that took the audience on a journey from dark to light. “I really wanted to showcase the beauty of Wella colours,” she says. “We did a segment on richer and darker colours with a bit more chaos to it, a segment that focuses on pastels and lighter colours, and the last segment focuses on bright colours.”
