VISIBLY HEALTHY HAIR in 20 minutes

Colourful Personality

S

un-kissed blondes, rich brunettes, bold reds or even punches of purple—there’s no easier way to change your look than with your hair colour. While I once longed for

luxe auburn locks, my current golden, caramel toned highlights not only encapsulate my personality but also offer a relaxed yet pulled together option which meets the demands of my lifestyle. For many of us, the colour of our hair is an expression of who we are, which is why making the switch to a different hue can be a tough call for your clients and when they rely on you to make that call, it can be just as demanding. Given the incredible range of hues now available, it makes sense that we’ve dedicated this issue to all things colour. From having the technical know-how on creating knockout highlights in “Haute Highlights” on page 44 to the best ways to optimize this season’s cool shades of grey in “Make Way for Grey” on page 46, we spoke with the colour pros for their best tips and tricks. We’ve also delved deeper into one of the key, yet oftentimes controversial hair colour ingredients in “Ammonia: Friend or Foe?” on page 48 where we give you the information and insight to make your own decision. And what about your male clients? If you think colour doesn’t matter to men, check out “A Colourful Conversation” on page 40, to find out why you’re likely missing out on major business and how you can turn that into a cool profit.

Haute Highlights Get the 411 on trends and technical advice from the colour professionals on how to create highlights that pack a colour punch.

rom creating drama to adding depth and dimension to your client’s hair colour, highlights can make a big impact on the finished look. We spoke with

Alina Friesen a master stylist with A Michael Levine Salon Group and Wella Professionals artist based in Vancouver, Chad Taylor, co-owner of Moods Hair Salon in Vancouver, and stage artist for Joico’s national artistic team and Sean Godard, a Redken artist and creative director of colour at SalonTocci in Toronto, for their insights into colour placement and how to avoid the technical challenge of textured hair. With their experience on stage, on set and in the salon, our experts give us their take on some of the next trends in highlights.

Colour placement As Friesen explains, “colour placement determines where the eye travels when seeing the hair. It allows you to mimic light and shadow as it hits the hair, which gives you beautiful dimension.” For example, placing lighter tones on the ends, framing the face, including the fringe, and on longer, asymmetrical parts of the hair will draw the eye to those areas, while using a darker tone at the roots will give it a fuller look. “Whether you’re doing a photo shoot or a fashion colour in the salon, always tint the roots a bit deeper, it always makes unconventional colours look more natural.” For the most natural results, Godard underscores the importance of beginning at the hairline. “I like to work horizontally moving up the sides and the back, which allows the weave [of the hair] to determine the highlighted areas” explains Godard, adding that this approach is both efficient and offers maximum coverage. Keep in mind that less is more, especially on the ends. “Natural highlights are not uniform

a younger crowd will gravitate towards blending it with pastels. Reilly cautions colourists to keep in mind they’ll need to take thin enough sections to allow the colour to penetrate the hair. According to Tsang, taking clean and detailed sections of hair during colour placement guarantees your colour will be even. “Depending on where grey is placed, it can add depth, movement and accentuate details in the hairstyle,” says Tsang. TOP TIP “Play with the hair when it is dry. By doing so, you can see the natural movement of the hair,” says Tsang. “This allows you to see how applying colour in certain places will affect the final look.”

DOWN THROUGH THE AGES As hair begins to grey, it tends to be coarser and more resistant to colour, which will affect the product you choose. Even if clients have the same amount of grey in their hair, Reilly says that you might be able to use a demi-permanent formula on a client with fine-textured hair while the client with coarser hair will require a permanent one. “When hair is coarse, you can’t expect to prelighten it and have it feel soft,” says Marchese adding that offering clients the right home care products is as important as giving them the right service. TOP TIP Marchese suggests applying hair colour that’s alkaline to damp hair which will reduce the hair’s resistance to the colour formula.

S

START THE CONVERSATION Although you’ve developed a good rapport with your clients over the years, addressing their grey hair may not be an easy subject to approach. Here’s how you can ease into the conversation. “Emphasize to clients how powerful grey can be in enhancing their hairstyle. I approach this by showing examples where the colour grey in one’s hair has been used to accentuate their appearance.” – Silas Tsang, creative director Blushes in, Ottawa, Ontario “Generally clients come to see me with this idea because they are embracing grey instead of hiding it and are asking for grey highlights. But I’ll let them know if something isn’t right for them.” – Joey Marchese, Essential Looks Artist for Schwarzkopf Professional “People are younger at heart. Even though we’re greying at the same rate as we always did, our minds aren’t at the same level age-wise as 20 years ago. I think that most people are looking at enhancing the grey, embracing their age and still wanting to look hip.” – Kathy Reilly, national education manager for Goldwell For more advice on working with greyhaired clients go to SalonMagazine.ca salonmagazine.ca

How Ammonia Works

Ammonia’s role is twofold: It opens up the hair cuticle to facilitate the oxidation process that lightens the natural colour of the hair, and it helps develop the added colour.

Because hair has an acidic pH by nature, ammonia also helps it become alkaline, to create a permanent change in colour, particularly when creating high lift shades.

Is this key ingredient in colour formulas really as harmful as most people think it is? We weighed the pros and cons after talking to the pros.

A

By Yasmin Grothé

mmonia has been used since the first hair colour formulas were created more than 100 years ago. It’s one of the two key ingredients — the other being peroxide — that’s essential to achieving hair colour changes in permanent and demi-permanent formulas. Here's the scoop on this oftencontroversial ingredient.

48

s a l o n o c t o b e r. 1 4

FACT: All permanent hair colour needs a chemical alkalizer, such as ammonia or MEA, to open up the cuticle so that the ingredients in the colour formula can penetrate the hair shaft and create the desired shade.

Allergy Fact or Fiction? According to Jean-Sébastien Tremblay, field education capability

of the population is truly allergic to PPD or PTD, according to Jean-Sébastien Tremblay, field education capability master and master colourist for Wella Professionals.

master and master colourist for Wella Professionals, “It’s [nearly] impossible for ammonia to trigger any allergic reaction. In fact, ammonia is naturally produced in the human body. When clients complain about having a reaction to ammonia, it’s usually because they are sensitive to the smell, or added fragrances in the hair

Allergic reactions to hair colour are only triggered by PPD or PTD, the dye molecule that has been used in colour formulas since they were first developed in the 1800s.

colour or have an itchy scalp because of the chemical reactions taking place during the colouring process.”

Lasting Impact “Ammonia is a gas that easily penetrates the hair shaft to create the chemical reaction. But once that’s done it just evaporates without leaving any residue,” explains Christine Longo, professional development consultant for L’Oréal Professionnel, who oversees all product testing for colour in Canada. “But MEA is a liquid that has a bigger molecule. It opens the cuticle less, so you have to compensate by adding a larger quantity of product,“ says Tremblay. “Since MEA is a liquid, it has to be rinsed out with great care or it will continue oxidizing even after the client has walked out of the salon and cause premature colour fading,” says Tremblay.

QUICK FIX:

One solution brands that have implemented is to offer ancillary products like

shampoos with added ingredients to mitigate the damage that can be caused by MEA.

Customize Your Colour Service

1

So, should you offer your client ammonia-based hair colour or formulas that contain MEA? It all depends on what you want to achieve. While Longo concurs with Tremblay in that high amounts of ammonia or MEA aren’t a good thing, knowing your clients will help you choose the best option that will keep their hair silky soft and beautiful.

2

For high lift shaded: Ammonia-based formulas are your best bet. “It’s always better to chose ammonia for permanent colour rather than MEA in larger quantities,” suggests Tremblay.

3

For over processed hair: Neither one will create a beautiful shade. In that case, your best option is semi-permanent colour.

he more you advance in your career, the more you want to take care of people,” says Benoit Auger, owner of Rayko, a well-known salon that has been a fixture in

Montreal’s LaSalle neighbourhood for the past 52 years. In 2013, the salon relocated just one block away from its original address — to stay close to its customer base — when the owners purchased a building that was previously a bank. “From one day to the next, we doubled in size. And even though we have clients who have been coming to us every week for more than 40 years, I hire a lot of young talent in order to cater to a younger crowd. You have to stay current,” says Auger. The mood at Rayko is uplifting, with a full range of beauty services (including eyelash extensions) and a quick fashion fix thanks to a small clothing boutique rented out to a third party. Open 60 hours each week, Rayko has a staff team of 10 stylists and three receptionists. “I think it’s the most important position since it’s the first touchpoint when clients walk into the salon, and the one that really represents who we are,” explains Auger, who truly believes that customer service is a huge pillar of success.

SALON EVENTS

Passionate Fusion For three exciting days, Redken salon professionals from all over Canada came together to fine-tune their skills and expand their business thanks to a stellar lineup of presenters. It was the event all Canadian Redkenites had been waiting for. After two years of saying goodbye to the last edition of Fusion, one of the largest manufacturer education events in Canada, with more than 1,100 attendees was back at the Queen Elizabeth hotel, from June 1 to June 3, in Montreal. The unique three-day event focused on helping every salon professional learn better, earn better and live better. Knowledge is gold For more than 50 years, Redken has been building a network of solid professionals in the salon business, while focusing on the fashionable aspect of beauty. As Terry Ritcey, national education director for Redken Canada says, “The Redken ‘professional edge’ is the unique mix of fashion, innovation, and inspiration designed to elevate [stylists'] skills, creativity and business.” At Fusion 2014, passionate and committed educators from all over the world, including Australia, the U.K., the U.S. and Canada, offered incredibly detailed education sessions that focused on cutting techniques, colour challenges and backstage work at fashion shows. They also discussed how to become financially savvy, with business gurus Michael Cole and Peter Mahoney underscoring Redken's current motto, “learn better, earn better and live better.” PHOTOS: COURTESY OF REDKEN, SALON MAGAZINE STAFF
