our sa 6e édition, DRAWING NOW PARIS I LE SALON DU DESSIN CONTEMPORAIN confirme son engagement pour la création contemporaine. Alliance de la tradition et de l’audace, différents points de vue sont offerts au regard des visiteurs. La tradition avec le rendez-vous au Carrousel du Louvre, un cadre prestigieux au centre de la Capitale et rendez-vous désormais attendu des collectionneurs et professionnels, et l’audace avec DRAWING NOW I HORS LES MURS. Avec 82 artistes présentés en focus et plus de 400 au total, le Carrousel du Louvre réserve de belles découvertes tant dans la présentation que dans la qualité et la diversité des oeuvres proposées par les galeries. Pour la première fois, un programme de tables rondes autour du dessin contemporain permet aux artistes, collectionneurs, institutions et galeries de partager leurs expériences et leurs réseaux. Le Prix DRAWING NOW de dessin contemporain sera remis pour la deuxième année à un artiste de moins de 50 ans présenté en focus sur un stand. Ce prix est décerné par le Fonds de dotation pour le Dessin contemporain, soutenu par SOFERIM. Au 17 rue de Richelieu, DRAWING NOW I HORS LES MURS est dédié à toutes les expérimentations du dessin contemporain. Deux étages d’un immeuble se sont transformés au gré des interventions des artistes. Ainsi, durant quatre jours, toutes les générations d’amateurs et de collectionneurs d’art contemporain vont pouvoir compléter leur collection et acquérir le dessin d’un artiste confirmé ou découvrir les artistes de demain. This year, DRAWING NOW PARIS I LE SALON DU DESSIN CONTEMPORAIN confirms its commitment to contemporary creativity. Visitors will be offered various viewpoints combining tradition and audacity. Tradition will be provided with the venue, the Carrousel du Louvre, a prestigious setting in the city center and a now eagerly awaited location for collectors and professionals. Audacity will be upheld by DRAWING NOW I HORS LES MURS. With a focus on 82 artists and more than 400 represented, the Carrousel du Louvre will showcase surprising discoveries both in terms of presentation, quality and diversity of work proposed by galleries. The DRAWING NOW Award for contemporary drawing will be awarded for the second year to an artist aged under 50 focused on a booth. It is awarded by the Fonds de dotation pour le Dessin Contemporain and is supported by SOFERIM. At 17 rue de Richelieu, 5 minutes from the Carrousel du Louvre, DRAWING NOW I HORS LES MURS will be dedicated to all experiments in contemporary drawing. Two floors of a building will be transformed by artists' interventions on the walls, floor, in projections and even on the façade, in a giant contemporary drawing laboratory. We will reveal the content very shortly. For four days, all generations of contemporary art lovers and collectors may complete their collections with drawings purchased from confirmed artists or discover artists of the future.

a été dit, tout a été écrit sur le dessin…En guise d’introduction, j’ai eu l’idée d’en revenir « Tout aux fondamentaux. Parce qu’à force d’en parler, d’écrire à son propos, on oublie trop vite la parole de ceux qui le pratiquent, qui nous en ont offert des formules claires, cinglantes et quasi définitives. La parole à ces auteurs, artistes, écrivains, créateurs en tous genres, sous la forme d’un… Qui a dit quoi ?

1 « On dessine toujours les éléphants plus petits que nature, mais les puces sont toujours plus grandes. » 2 « Mon affaire est dessiner ce que je vois, non ce que je sais. » 3 « Le dessin est la probité de l’art. » 4 « Le dessin n’est pas la forme, il est la manière de voir la forme. » 5 « Le dessin et la couleur ne sont point distincts, au fur et à mesure que l’on peint on dessine ; plus la couleur s’harmonise, plus le dessin se précise. Est-il avouable, dans le cadre de ce salon, que lorsqu’il m’a été « demandé d’écrire ces quelques lignes sur la façon dont j’envisageais

SALON DU DESSIN CONTEMPORAIN un nouveau concept que nous annoncions vouloir décliner sur le temps. Fidèle à l’idée de mettre en exergue le dessin quels que soient son intention et sa matérialité, nous avions imaginé ce concept, emprunté à Malraux, afin d’inviter des personnalités à constituer ce que serait pour eux leur musée idéal en ce domaine. Figure majeure et incontournable de la scène artistique contemporaine, Catherine Millet a accepté de jouer le jeu cette année 2012, une année d’autant plus chargée pour elle que c’est celle de l’anniversaire des 40 ans de la revue Art Press dont elle est l’une des fondatrices. Si avant-garde et fidélité sont les deux mots qui caractérisent au plus juste le rôle essentiel qu’elle a joué au cours de ces nombreuses années, il en est un autre qui l’honore, c’est la discrétion. La créatrice d’Art Press est paradoxalement quelqu’un qui sait prendre son temps – comme elle l’a pris avant de se faire un nom en tant qu’écrivain à part entière. Cette qualité s’accorde parfaitement avec le dessin qui est un exercice essentiel. Le choix qu’elle a fait pour son musée imaginaire ne manquera pas d’en surprendre plus d’un, partagé qu’il est entre classicisme postmoderne et invention plastique.

le dessin, je suis d’abord restée… perplexe ? Depuis que je fais ce métier de critique d’art, ai-je jamais isolé cette pratique des autres pratiques que je suis amenée à commenter ? D’autant qu’ayant fait mes classes au temps de l’art conceptuel, j’ai alors beaucoup regardé les graphiques mathématiques de Bernar Venet, les pages d’écriture de Hanne Darboven, ou encore les photographies des perspectives corrigées de Jan Dibbets ? Traditionnellement, le dessin était souvent le domaine que l’artiste réservait à la recherche, son moment d’hésitation, mais le work in progress qu’est un dripping de Pollock n’intègre-t-il pas, en même temps qu’il la rend obsolète, cette fonction ? Si je m’en tiens à une définition a minima du dessin au travers de son caractère graphique, alors il me faut bien reconnaître qu’un Concetto spaziale de Fontana, un tableau à la bombe de Martin Barré (lui qui ne dessinait jamais sur papier), sont au plus près du geste de l’artiste, et que les mots attrapés dans un filet d’Annette Messager et les monumentales sculptures que réalise aujourd’hui Venet sont des occupations graphiques du mur et de l’espace tridimensionnel. En vérité, le dessin contemporain, relié qu’il est non plus seulement à la peinture et à la sculpture mais aussi à la performance, à la vidéo, et bien sûr à l’informatique, réalise le maillage de tous les supports et de tous les modes d’expression que s’est donné l’art contemporain.

Last year, with Pierre Cornette de Saint Cyr's Imaginary Museum, we inaugurated a new concept at DRAWING NOW PARIS I LE SALON DU DESSIN CONTEMPORAIN which we announced would be adapted over time. Loyal to the idea of highlighting drawing, regardless of its intention and form, we imagined this concept, borrowed from Malraux, which involves inviting personalities to create their ideal museum in this field. A major and essential figure in contemporary art, Catherine Millet has accepted to rise to the challenge in what is a very busy year for her, as it is the 40th anniversary of the Art Press review that she co-founded. Avant-garde and loyalty are two words that accurately sum up the key role she has played over the years. Another, to her credit, is discretion. The co-founder of Art Press paradoxically knows how to take her time - just as she took a while to make her name as an author in her own right. This quality perfectly reflects drawing which is an essential exercise. The choices she has made for her Imaginary Museum will surprise more than a few, divided as they are between post-modern classicism and artistic invention.

Can I confess that when I was asked to write a few lines about this exhibition and my approach to drawing, I was initially quite perplexed? In my whole career as an art critic, have I ever isolated this from any other practice that I was required to comment on? Especially considering that I started my career in the heyday of conceptual art and spent much time looking at the mathematical graphs of Bernar Venet, the pages of writing by Hanne Darboven and the photographs of corrected perspectives of Jan Dibbets? Traditionally, drawing was often the domain that the artist set aside for his or her research, a moment of hesitation. But does not work in progress like a dripping by Pollock also integrate, just as it makes obsolete, this function? If I had to stick to a minimal definition of drawing through its graphic character, then I would have to recognise that a Concetto spaziale by Fontana, a spray can painting by Martin Barré (who never drew on paper) are very close to the artist's gesture and that words caught in the net of Annette Messager and the monumental sculptures now created by Venet are graphic occupations of the wall and of three-dimensional space. In truth, contemporary drawing, linked not only to painting and sculpture but also to performance, video and, of course, IT, weaves together all media and all forms of expression adopted by contemporary art.

March - June 2012 Attaché à montrer le travail instinctif de Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) qui multiplie les recherches picturales autour d’une exploration de la lumière, du mouvement des couleurs et de leur « contraste simultané », le département des Arts graphiques du musée des Arts décoratifs propose l’accrochage d’une quinzaine d’œuvres - dans la Salle Jean Royère (Niveau 8) - autour de la création de cette pionnière de l’abstraction. Cette sélection de dessins pour des tissus simultanés - pensée pour Drawing Now Paris 2012 – expose, au format d’un corpus raisonné, motifs géométriques, formes éclatantes, compositions rythmiques et rythmées, à la manière d’un hommage pour celle qui entendit la demande sociale de son temps, à la recherche, pour l’ornement des corps autant que celui de la maison, du « chant sensuel de la couleur ». L’exposition d’Alain Huck proposée par le centre culturel suisse est sa première exposition personnelle dans une institution en France. Toutefois, le travail d’Alain Huck bénéficie déjà d’une reconnaissance auprès du public français qui a pu voir son travail dans une grande exposition personnelle au Mamco Genève, dans le cadre du Printemps de Septembre à Toulouse, et plus récemment à Art Basel en 2011 où était exposé l’ensemble de dessins monumentaux Tragedy or Position. Le travail d’Alain Huck est également suivi de près par le Centre Georges Pompidou qui a récemment acquis une œuvre. L’exposition d’Alain Huck comporte des dessins récents, mais également des photographies, des vidéos, une sculpture d’envergure réalisée à cette occasion et une douzaine d’agaves scarifiées. Comme pour la plupart des expositions personnelles organisées par le centre culturel suisse, cette exposition est accompagnée d’un livre d’artiste. La présentation de ce livre donne lieu à une lecture, par un comédien, d’un texte de l’artiste, dont le titre de travail est L’inspection des roses, et qui est inclus dans le livre d’artiste.

Avec “Diagramme(s)”, l’École Spéciale d’Architecture continue à décomposer le processus d’élaboration d’un projet d’architecture. Le diagramme, le schéma et le graphique expriment chez l’architecte le concept ou les intentions du projet. Souvent colorés ou descriptif ils sont utilisés par les architectes conjointement avec les premiers croquis pour expliciter leur projet. «Comme un dispositif génératif dans le processus de conception, le diagramme est aussi une forme de représentation. Le Frac Ile-de-France / Le Plateau présente Through Somnambular Laws, première exposition à Paris d'Elise Florenty et Marcel Türkowsky, essentiellement consacrée à leurs nouvelles productions. Les deux artistes partagent une même fascination pour la puissance poétique du langage et de la fabulation et interrogent, à travers leurs films, les “ruptures temporelles“ qui se manifestent par l'irruption d'un monde dans un autre, d'un système dans un autre. Through Somnambular Laws impose un processus de lecture au ralenti et instaure une fluidité où imaginaire et réel n'ont pas lieu d'être distingués. The FRAC Ile-de-France / Le Plateau is presenting Through Somnambular Laws, the first exhibition in Paris of the work of Elise Florenty and Marcel Türkowsky, which is devoted essentially to their recent output. These two artists share the same fascination with the poetic power of language, through fables, spells and instructions and question, through their films, the “ruptures in time” coming to the fore by way of another—the system of another—bursting in upon the world. Pour la manifestation « dessiner - tracer » organisée par l'Association des conservateurs des musées du Nord-Pas de Calais en 2011 et 2012, ce sont cent artistes contemporains et quatre cents œuvres distinctes - des mille acquises par le fracpicardie, qui composeront des ensembles variés et parfois inédits. Le cabinet des estampes du musée Boijmans Van Beuningen à Rotterdam possède une collection de plus de 70 000 feuilles. C’est l’une des plus riches collections de dessins et estampes d’Europe, comportant des collections partielles remarquables de maîtres italiens, allemands, néerlandais et français. Depuis quelques décennies, le musée met également l’accent sur la collection d’œuvres contemporaines, et plus particulièrement de celles qui émanent d’un état d’esprit surréaliste. Il s’agit donc d’œuvres procédant d’une forme d’imagination automatique, parfois d’une concentration profane, et qui cherchent à créer une vision du monde personnelle. Ces dessins contemporains permettent de jeter un pont vers le noyau de la collection de tableaux surréalistes du musée, qui est certes restreinte mais admirable, et qui comporte des toiles célèbres de Dali et Magritte ainsi que de membres du cercle parisien d’André Breton. Le musée ne recule pas devant la collection d’un bloc représentatif d’un artiste spécifique ni devant l’acquisition de dessins de (très) grands formats. Il s’oriente aussi largement au-delà des frontières néerlandaises. Cette exposition intègre une soixante-dizaine d’œuvres de dessinateurs-nés tels qu’Oscar de las Flores (Mexique), Peter Feiler (Allemagne), Ewoud van Rijn (Pays-Bas), Charles Avery (Angleterre), Krijn de Koning (Pays-Bas), Charlie Roberts (USA), Ronald Cornelissen (Pays-Bas), Elmar Trenkwalder (Autriche), Paul van der Eerden (Pays-Bas) et bien d’autres. La collection montre à quel point le dessin est une discipline contemporaine active et séduisante.

La vie n’est pas pour les amateurs - August Strindberg interprété par des déssinateurs suédois est une exposition collective d’une séléction d’auteurs suédois de la bande dessinée d’aujourd’hui. Elle s’attache à la mémoire de cet artiste pluriel (1849–1912), sans conteste le plus célèbre des écrivains suédois. Son empreinte, toujours très présente en Suède, se retrouve chez ces artistes directement inspirés par sa personne et son œuvre. Il entremêlait volontiers fiction et réalité, rendant presque impossible de les dissocier. Strindberg a passé plusieurs périodes de sa vie en France et à Paris, écrivant même certains textes en français. Life is not for amateurs – Swedish Comics Artists interpret Strindberg is an exhibition commemorating this great artist, connecting him to contemporary Swedish comics artists. Strindberg’s presence is still so influential in Swedish culture they have been inspired to produce graphic novels either about Strindberg himself or adaptations of his works. The life and works of the most famous Swedish author, artist and playwright (1849¬–1912) are so closely connected that it’s hard to separate fact from fiction. He lived an international life and spent time in Paris, France, writing some of his texts directly in French.

The Institut Néerlandais presents a selection of contemporary drawings from the print collection of museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Boijmans Van Beuningen has over 70,000 sheets, which makes it one of the richest collections of prints and drawings in Europe. These include prominent subsets of work by Italian, German, Dutch and French masters. In recent decades the museum has focused on contemporary drawings, with the accent on work with a surrealistic mentality. All these drawings are rooted in some form of automatic imagination. They feature an almost outsider-like concentration, and strive to create their own world view. These contemporary drawings form a bridge to the museum's modest but impressive surreal core collection, which includes well-known works by Dali and Magritte, as well as members of André Breton's Paris circle. The organizers did not shrink from acquiring a representative block of work by a particular artist, or collecting drawings which are exceptional for their size. And often they looked beyond their own borders. The present exhibition includes some seventy works by such born artists as Oscar de Las Flores (Mexico), Peter Feiler (Germany), Ewoud van Rijn (Holland), Charles Avery (England), Krijn de Koning (Holland), Charlie Roberts (USA), Ronald Cornelissen (Holland), Elmar Trenkwalder (Austria), Paul van der Eerden (Holland), and scores of others. This collection demonstrates that the art of drawing is a lively, contemporary, and appealing discipline.

Il y est, entre autres, question de bibliothèque, de collection, et plus particulièrement de la collection Edmond de Rothschild du département des Arts graphiques. L’activité cérébrale est évoquée dans une installation qui associe des dessins de Le Brun à une cabine de douche expérimentale. Pour l’exposition, Jean-Philippe Toussaint a réalisé spécialement deux grandes compositions photographiques, Mardi au Louvre, qui évoque sous un jour inattendu la vie du musée le mardi, jour de fermeture, et un portrait de groupe d’écrivains contemporains librement inspiré de l’Hommage à Delacroix de Fantin-Latour. De même, mettant en rapport l’éternité de l’écrit et l’éphémère de la lecture, le manuscrit exceptionnel d’En attendant Godot de Beckett côtoie la huitième édition de La Divine Comédie de Dante, tous deux présentés en contrepoint de neuf tablettes électroniques ouvertes sur des traductions de La Divine Comédie de Dante en différentes langues.

La maison rouge accueille la première grande exposition internationale consacrée au néon dans l’art des années 1940 à nos jours, présentant une centaine d’œuvres historiques ou inédites. Des pionniers Gyula Kosice et Lucio Fontana au début des années 1940 à 50, à François Morellet, Bruce Nauman, Stephen Antonakos, Joseph Kosuth ou Mario Merz dans les années 60, à des artistes tels que Jason Rhoades, Claude Lévêque, Sylvie Fleury et tant d’autres aujourd’hui. L’installation Témoin hybride est l’aboutissement d’une résidence de cinq mois à Paris dans le cadre de SAM Arts Projects, de l’artiste indonésien Eko Nugroho, né en 1977. Il mêle aux techniques traditionnelles (batik, broderie) celles de la contre-culture : peinture murale, graffiti, bande dessinée, film d’animation. L’association inattendue de ces deux registres crée un environnement fantasmagorique, déploiement de l’espace mental de l’artiste. De petites scénettes drôles ou absurdes, entre science-fiction et manga, nous parlent du quotidien : la déambulation, les rencontres, l’engagement politique, la corruption, le désir, etc. Témoin hybride est une scène de théâtre proliférante accessible à tous. Plutôt qu’asséner des certitudes ou produire des objets, il crée les conditions d’un échange le plus large possible, qu’il soit politique, économique ou culturel.

L’œuvre de Millet compose les chapitres d’une encyclopédie imaginaire, peuplée d’objets hybrides qu’il construit puis photographie dans la nature ou en atelier. L’installation La Chasse s’articule autour de photographies reproduisant les structures géométriques de fils blancs tendues par l’artiste dans le chaos d’une forêt. Elle interroge la notion de territoire et figure, à sa manière, les pièges qu’il recèle pour l’animal. Dans sa série de dessins composant L’Herbier, l’artiste greffe des organes végétaux sur l’image photographique écorchée de son corps dans une esthétique inspirée des traités d’anatomie et de botanique.

Eko Nugroho is an Indonesian artist (born in 1977) and the installation Hybrid witness is the outcome of his five months residency in Paris at the Villa Raffet (SAM Arts Projects). Nugroho combines traditional techniques (batik, embroidery) and counterculture expressions: wall painting, graffiti, comic strips and cartoons. This unexpected combination invites us into a shadowy atmosphere – displaying the artist’s mindset. Funny or absurd scenes, between science fiction and manga, explore the everyday life: wandering around, encountering people, getting politically involved, confronting corruption and desire, etc. Hybrid witness is an abounding and comprehensible stage open to everyone. Rather than providing us with certainties or producing artifacts, Nugroho sets up the conditions of the widest possible discussion about politics, economy or culture.

L’exposition intitulée «Le hibou tourne la tête pour regarder ailleurs» se concentre sur un aspect particulier de l’œuvre, installations et pièces sculpturales allusives, sans négliger néanmoins certaines ramifications de la pratique de Santoro, plus familières au public, telles que les time-based text works et les œuvres participatives à base de scripts. L’artiste proposera également des dessins et des installations spécialement conçus pour l’exposition. A cette occasion, la publication d’un livre d’artiste révélera un matériel inédit provenant des archives de Santoro sur ses recherches en cours. L'ouverture du nouvel espace d'exposition Ygrec de l'Ecole Nationale Superieure d'arts Paris-Cergy, va permettre à Mille Feuillets - qui en est à sa deuxième édition - de se déployer dans un lieu plus vaste et mieux adapté à un tel exercice. L'exposition est ce moment privilegié qui permet de saisir au vol une pratique - celle du dessin - aussi diffuse et parfois légère soit-elle. D'autant que dans notre cas, elle traverse et parcourt toutes les années et des enseignements tant pratiques que théoriques. Dessin tout terrain, d'observation ou de mémoire, germinal ou autonome...
