The same principle applies to culture and to art, and to all the events Reed Exhibitions organises in France and worldwide: the power of our fairs and exhibitions resides in their capacity to bring all those involved in a particular world together around the passion they share. The Paris Book Fair is much more than just a mega-bookstore: its ambition is to bring different territories, generations, genres, and all their representatives together to share an intensive events programme. Each year this is a huge sounding board for the entire profession serving text and image, reflecting its latest developments, its past heritage, the forecast for the future. An event where authors, publishers and booksellers, as well as translators, producers, illustrators, printers, librarians, reference librarians and many other professionals gather to discuss, debate and work together. The 2012 session had barely concluded and already the next guests of honour were being announced.
EDITORIAL
Romania and the city of Barcelona will be in the spotlight in 2013 – a country and a city that are close to France geographically, historically and emotionally. Many other countries will be coming, too – either for the first time, or returning: the Paris Book Fair’s increasingly international profile is a key factor driving its growth. The digital economy and digital publishing occupy a central place at the Fair: the Digital Stage, which celebrated its fifth birthday in 2012, offers the general public an opportunity to encounter the latest innovations on the reading media front. The question now isn’t whether books will or won’t be digital – it’s simply a matter of seizing the opportunities and getting to grips with the concrete challenges involved. Being a partner of the Paris Book Fair means being part of the vibrant diversity of Europe’s premier public arts event, it means seizing this opportunity to highlight a new development, an event, an undertaking; it means pooling your energies and ours to make your participation dynamic and successful; it means preparing for new experiences and encounters and ensuring that the passion for books endures.
