ART GALLERY #AN EXTENSION TO THE KIPLING HOUSE //SITE : KIPLING HOUSE, MUMBAI
DESIGN STUDIO 7 The fourth year design studio started with documenting old dilapidated buildings in South Mumbai. Buildings which are now either in disuse or used for programs other that what is was built for. These structures were once important landmarks of the city. The Kipling House, sited in the campus of J.J. School of Arts is one such structure. The cottage is where author and Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling was born. Later, it became the Dean's Bungalow where subsequent heads of the prestigious School lived till around 2002, after which it remained locked and vacant and soon became dilapidated. The diagram was based on a fictitious story with an artist as the protagonist who keeps hallucinating as he walks around the kipling house. His memory of the vicinity area keeps taking him back and forth by comparing similar elements ,at a smaller scale in the house to a bigger scale in the vicinity area of the city. Staircase was taken as an element and played along by changing scales and dimensions to be accomodated in the design as a ramp, extending on two sides forming arcades, roof for programs like cafe, studios, daily exhibiton space and store room, and also as the floor for the art gallery. The skylights in the roof allow diffused light forming interesting shadow patterns in the art gallery below.

DESIGN STUDIO 8
The Fourth year design studio was an extensive research based project ,which adopted a diffferent perspective on spatial design . The studio focussed on studying the functioning and scope of one of the many issues under the purvey of FSSAI ( Food Safety and Standard Authority of India ) The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI consolidates various acts & orders that have hitherto handled food related issues in various Ministries and Departments. FSSAI has been created for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. The concept of Organic Farming was studied and its benefits and shortcomings were recognised. Further a detailed analysis of the policies undertaken by the states to promote organic farming in india were charted out and the purview of organic food was discussed. After analysing the scope of work of each of the bodies ( government or private) involved with the promotion of organic farming in India, the relation between these were re-organised to combat the loopholes in the previous working by making FSSAI work as a mediator. The aim of the project was to develop an organisational strategy which would not only enable smooth functioning but also help in the promotion of organic farming .This strategy was applied to generate programs which were then arranged into an organisational conceptual structure.
PROCESS DIAGRAM Analysing and creating possible relationships between different bodies engaged with organic farming
SHORTCOMINGS OF ORGANIC FARMING
ORGANIC INPUTS ARE EXPENSIVE
LABOUR INTENSIVE
GIVES SMALLER YIELD COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL FARMING ENSURES HIGH FOOD QUALITY THEY HAVE A SHORTER SHELF LIFE PRODUCES LESS WASTE & USES LESS
ORGANIC CERTIFICATION IS EXPENSIVE NUTRITIOUS FOOD
ORGANISATIONAL STRATEGY Deducing the scope of work of each department and hence creating links within them for smoother functioning
APPLICATION OF THE STRATEGEY Depending on the purview of work of the linked departments programs are generated which are further classified as internal, intermediary and external interactions where internal is the interaction within the departments of FSSAI, Intermediary is the interaction of a department of FSSAI to an external body and external where the interaction happens between external bodies with FSSAI as the mediator
PROCESS DIAGRAM Flow chart dividing the department of FSSAI into three basic categoris Legislation, Regulation and Promotion and recognising the internal relations within them
PROCESS DIAGRAM Flow chart to understand the flow of information from the external bodies to FSSAI and visa versa and also within the department of FSSAI
PROPOSED ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE The external interaction acting as the core, being consumer centric while the intermediary and internal interaction are more secluded
STREET CONNECTIVITY AND OPEN SPACES # road networks //SITE: malad (w) ,MUMBAI
URBAN DESIGN
The area of Malad(w) lacked street connectivity and open spaces. The existing open spaces were neglected and were encroached upon. For example, few were used up for parking or for dumping waste. The idea was to make the existing spaces interesting and approachable , introduce more open and green spaces, activate street edges and introduce street furniture in the scape depending on the character of the area. The selected site started at malad station, passing through the high-rise commercial and residential area ending at the creek. The street patterns and the scale of open spaces would keep changing according to the context. The markets at the station would have a green buffer to break away from the chaos of the crowd, gaothan would have many such buffers but a small scale as it is densely packed and towards the creek the scale would be large to open up the site to the mangroves. Focus was also to increase the connectivity of streets. The introduction of green corridor for a shaded pedestrian walkway, cycling track , internal roads, pick up and drop off points etc. Creation of junctions and making them interesting by introducing activities or street furniture. Major parameters were minimum walking distance, accessibility and legibility . Idea was to replace distances with displacements . The derived benefit was the intersection of these various pathways. The change in experience when you walk from a busy street to a quiet shaded lane. The change in experience when you walk from a hard paved road to a green corridor. It was about creating an experience for a person walking through the site.

RECREATION CENTRE # community breather //SITE: BHULESHWAR,MUMBAI
DESIGN STUDIO 4
Bhuleshwar ,a historic neighbourhood in Southern Mumbai has remained a residential and religious hub as before, while thriving as the city’s essential commercial marketplace today. Bhuleshwar is a labyrinth of narrow streets and temples , bustling with activities. The low rise high density chawls famous of Bhuleshwar , were studied in terms of the multiple tiers and the connecting flight of staircases. These chawls when studied in section revealed how the ground line keeps shifting due to changing levels with some houses starting below the ground level, the threshold in front of the ground level houses and the otlas on the front porch . On the above levels too , the corridor isnt constant but keeps going higher and lower. The project is sited abbutting the chawls, accessible directly from these chawls as well . The recreation centre was aimed to act as a breather amidst the dense fabric of the area. The staircase acts as the core of the project connecting the multiple tiers of amphitheatre , library , restaurant and the workshop area.

TROVANTS #COMPLEXITY IN NON-LIVING SYSTEMS IN NATURE // SELECTED FOR A 1:1 INSTALLATION
Advance DESIGN WORKSHOP The second year design workshop focussed on structural and functional complexities found in non-living systems in nature .These include geological formations, rocks, minerals, salt, sand, quartz, ice etc. Complex systems are signified by two or more components that are distinct and integrated. Systems in nature exhibit an inherent complex structure based on their process of formation. These systems react with dynamic environmental factors ( such as heat, pressure and agents such as wind, water, light etc. ) that cause functional complexity so as to achieve a natural state of equilibrium. The studio investigates various complex systems through a process of diagrams and models to devise a dynamic installation based on specific structural complexities and their reactions to changing environmental conditions. Trovants are stones found in Romania .These stones lie dormant throughout the year , except for when it rains. A layer develops on the surface of the trovant due to the rains . Hence, this stone is called the growing stone. It is formed due to the compaction of the layers of porous sand over the years. Due to this compaction, the porosity keeps on decreasing . Also , these is an inter-mixing of the layers of sand.

(IN)TENSIONAL PULL #ASSEMBLY - DISASSEMBLY
FOUNDATION WORKSHOP
In the first phase of the workshop, machines were procured and disassembled into its individual components. Each component performs a simple, specific function such that when they are assembled, they can perform complex and efficient operations as a whole . The second phase documents a part of the city from Vile Parle station till Juhu Beach. Activities performed in this stretch were analysed as a series of repetitive processes that form a part of a complex mechanism that is the City. The site is viewed as a number of simple components that are assembled to perform like a complex machine . Here, the machinic and repetitive movement of crates being unloaded, picked-up, segregated, stacked and loaded back is depicted through a video which is then abstracted into a model using mechanical arms and pulleys. The model is based on the principle of interlinkage of various motions of pulleys and the mechanical arms. A single pulley on rotation stimulates the other pulleys which in a rythmic pattern causes movement in the mechanical arms.
Comparing the Dynamics os a pulley to the mechanical activity of loading, unloading, arranging and segregating of crates.

HEX PLAY #WALL OF FUN //SITE : vERSOVA FISHING VILLAGE, MUMBAI
DESIGN STUDIO 2
The Versova Fishing Village is home to a large community of fishing folk known as ‘kohlis’ , which is one the original inhabitants of the city . The Kohli as a community is popularly called are a colorful folk. With a distinct style in dressing, food, language and cultural traditions; The koli women are economically independent and handle the entire sales business. There is complete division of work - the men go into the ocean and the women take care of the selling. The village was documented through photographs and drawings , the activities and physical parameters were studied and a suitable urban insert was proposed on a specific site. Here, a transformable wall with hexagonal units is proposed which serves to replace a dead wall on one of the houses and acts as a wall-climber addidng to the few existing spaces available to the children to play amidst the narrow lanes . The openings on this wall allows for diffused light in the interior spaces.
