RELEASE YOUR BEST YOU

THIS YEAR WE CELEBRATE 20 MILLION RESTYLANE TREATMENTS. BEHIND THOSE TREATMENTS ARE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. THIS BOOK TELLS THE STORY OF SOME OF THEM.

A PRODUCT THAT CHANGED THE FACE OF AESTHETICS For almost twenty years, people have chosen Restylane® to alleviate wrinkles and facial contouring. When we first received European approval in 1996, the main other options at hand for facial reshaping were surgical. Today Restylane has been used in 20 million aesthetic treatments worldwide1 which means we have been able to see our success on faces of millions of people who tried our products. You could say that Restylane were part of creating an industry. Today aesthetic treatments with Restylane fillers and Restylane Skinboosters™ are much more common procedures. Unlike surgery they are not permanent and treatments rarely take more than half an hour. After a Restylane filler treatment you see the results immediately.

But this book is about a product that does more than remove the marks of time from your face. Our story is one about evolution, progress and empowerment. Restylane is a product we are proud of – and the results speak for themselves. The fact that over 20 million treatments have been performed with Restylane means a lot to us. It means that we have helped millions of people feel better about the way they look and that people, doctors as well as patients, keep putting their trust in our products.

THE RESTYLANE STORY IS ONE ABOUT EVOLUTION, PROGRESS AND EMPOWERMENT.

18 YEARS OF EXPERTISE INSIDE ONE LITTLE SYRINGE Galderma’s patented NASHA technology, for stabilizing hyaluronic acid is the basis for all Restylane® products. At the most basic level, hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule and a substance we already have in our bodies. It binds water and gives firmness to our skin. The Restylane story began with one scientist who believed in the potential benefits of a gel made of hyaluronic acid (HA). His determination led him and his colleagues to help refine the gel properties while keeping it as similar as possible to the native HA found in the human body. The goal at that time was two-fold: to develop a product with a long lasting clinical effect and a good safety profile.

2. Narins RS et al. Dermatol Surg 2011;37 (5):644–650 3. Narins RS et al. Dermatol Surg 2008;34:2–8 4. Kerscher M et al. Dermatol Surg 2008;34:1–7 5. Gubanova EI et al. HA is the same substance wherever you find it – that’s why it’s such a good substance to inject in the human body. Provided you purify it enough before you inject it into the human tissue, our body will not detect any difference between its own hyaluronic acid and the injected hyaluronic acid. However, the HA in our body is continuously degraded and renewed. In Restylane we have succeeded in creating a gel with a minimal modification to the hyaluronic acid making it similar to the body´s own HA. What’s more, the effects are long-lasting: A clinical study shows that Restylane lasts for up to 36 months with 2 retreatments of decreasing volume2, 3. We found that patients benefited from improved skin quality and elasticity – leading to two different product categories. The filler products smooth away wrinkles, create fuller lips, and add facial volume and contour, while Restylane Skinboosters™ have shown to improve skin quality and skin appearance when treating the face, neck, hands and décolletage4–7.

HYALURONIC ACID IS A SUBSTANCE WE ALREADY HAVE IN OUR BODIES. IT BINDS WATER AND GIVES FIRMNESS TO OUR SKIN.

QUALITY AND SAFETY GOES HAND-IN-HAND The work with safety and quality of our products is our main focus. Over the years, several clinical studies have been performed and the results are documented in more than 30 publications. Restylane® products are classified as a medical device, and every step, from the design and development phase through production is documented. We have a quality system in place to ensure a high standard of product quality. The system is reviewed regularly by authorities. So far we’ve received approval in more than 50 countries worldwide.

PRODUCTS ARE MADE BY PEOPLE, FOR PEOPLE There is a reason we do what we do. We like knowing that we can help people look on the outside the way they feel on the inside. We also like knowing that our innovations benefit doctors and clinicians, giving them more precision and making their work easier. It’s only by listening to them and working together with them that we are able to create new products for different treatment needs. Our technologies will continue to evolve and we think it is essential with a scientific approach to innovation. We have had two decades of research and development to enhance the treatment experience and we will continue to get even more clinical support by performing clinical studies on new treatment areas. In other words, one thing is certain. Still, after almost 20 years, the story of Restylane is just beginning.

WE LIKE KNOWING THAT WE CAN HELP PEOPLE LOOK ON THE OUTSIDE THE WAY THEY FEEL ON THE INSIDE.

STORIES The following stories show women and men of different ages and backgrounds that live busy modern lives, pursuing careers, raising families, socialising with friends. They were all happy with their looks, except for those annoying signs of their busy lifestyles that started showing. So they decided to do something about them. Here you can see what the results were, and also read about what some of them think about their treatments. True stories about true people and true change. It is about you, looking your best. Why shouldn’t you?

LILIANA

Age: 52 Family: Husband Occupation: Opera singer, voice talent, singing teacher Passions: People, faith

People are always surprised when they hear me sing. Even when I was a girl, no one thought I could become a professional opera singer. The first time I sang I was eleven years old. I went secretly to audition for a solo part in an opera by Benjamin Bitten and was picked. When I got home my dad didn’t believe me. But the next day we got the call and he came home with eleven red roses. Music is one of my passions. It became a path for me to express myself. I’ve always tried to follow my passions. It’s difficult when you know that someone might feel upset or betrayed by your choices, but you have to have the courage to be yourself. Some years ago my sister committed suicide. After that I decided that I didn’t want anyone else to find themselves in a situation where they had no one to speak to. I founded a charity organization that works in schools and prisons to increase awareness about gender violence. In one prison in Milan, I’ve been helping to restore women’s self-confidence and empower them for when they get out. Obviously, in prison everything changes. So we talk about beauty and love and femininity - things we take for granted, which are a gift, and sometimes impossible to achieve in prison. We talk about what it means to be a woman. Because it’s not about what I do, but who I am and my identity. A strong woman is a woman who knows herself and what her goals are and is prepared to sacrifice them if other priorities come up. She has the courage to be generous with herself, with her time and her emotions. A strong woman also knows where to put boundaries. Working with these women makes me happy because I’m helping people have the courage to express who they really are. One woman recently said that when you’re in love you look at yourself in a mirror or in a photo and you look beautiful. That defines beauty for me, because beauty is very much the outward expression of how you feel inside. When I’m happy and content with my appearance, I’m more self-confident. When I was on stage regularly, it was important that I look good for my work. Now, it’s just important to me. I like to look good. I’m usually pretty happy with my appearance, but there are days when I’m really tired. That’s my main problem. I work quite a lot and I’m annoyed by the wrinkles that come from being tired. Then of course there are wrinkles because I’m 52 and getting older. But I don’t like my wrinkles, so I decided to do something about them. I see aesthetic treatments as a solution that restores the natural look of your face without changing the way nature made you. I’m very happy with what I’ve done. People keep coming up to me asking, ”Have you been sleeping more?” When I look in the mirror, it’s not just that the fine lines have been smoothed out. I don’t know how else to put it – it’s like there’s more light in my face. See Liliana’s before & after pictures on pages 50–51.

I WANTED SOMETHING THAT ENHANCED MY NATURAL BEAUTY, AND NATURAL TO ME MEANS THAT IT IS A BETTER VERSION OF ME, BUT IT’S ME.

JIMMY

Age: 41 Family: A son and a daughter Occupation: Actor, extra, former carpenter Passion: My kids

Even though I work as an actor, my reasons for getting the treatment weren’t professional. And even though I’m single, I didn’t do it to improve my chances of meeting someone. I did it for me. It was a personal decision. I was starting to look older and the wrinkles were beginning to take over, especially in the mornings when I looked in the mirror. I wanted to look a bit more energetic, a bit younger. I did some research online. I had heard of Restylane. I knew that many people had done it before and that made me feel secure. Actually, I thought it would be more painful than it was. I hardly felt a thing. I’m a simple man. I don’t have any dreams of changing the world. I’m happiest in life when those around me are happy and doing well. I care about my kids more than anything else in life. I try to spend as much time with them as I can. I don’t think it’s unusual for men to get aesthetic treatments – I just think they don’t talk about it the way women do. I did tell my kids about the treatment. My son didn’t seem to care. My daughter said she didn’t see a big difference. No one else sees what you see about yourself. Although I think others notice that I look less tired. People ask if I’ve been abroad or if I’ve been living a healthier lifestyle. But I see the change. I know I look different. Most of the wrinkles that bothered me before are as good as gone. Although I didn’t do this for professional reasons, it’s had an effect. I have a little more self-confidence. It feels better when I look at myself in the mirror in the morning and I carry that with me throughout the day. See Jimmy’s before & after pictures on pages 52–53.

I THINK MORE MEN GET TREATMENTS THAN YOU THINK. THEY JUST DON’T TALK ABOUT IT.

SANDRA

Age: 37 Family: Teenage son Occupation: Performing artist Passions: Children, fire and magic

I have always been fascinated by fire, since I was a little girl. It’s an awesome element. When I was in the ninth grade I moved away from home and went to circus school where I became a trained clown and fire artist. Anyone can learn to breathe fire. It’s not such a big deal. But you cannot build a show around fire-breathing alone. To draw in an audience, you must use the fire to create an atmosphere with music and choreography. I’ve learned to do beautiful things with that feeling, especially when it comes to working with children. I love children. We understand each other and I find I can connect with them in a way that not everyone can. I’m at my happiest when I’m in a small group of children and I manage to create this magical world for them. I don’t think I know anyone braver than me, but I think true courage is about being who you are even if it might be different from the norm. Sometimes it requires a lot of courage just to stand up for yourself and do what you’re passionate about. I’m very curious about things I know nothing about, things I may or may not understand and want to see or experience. I try a lot of things. Sometimes I’m not so successful, but at least I’ve tried them. To a large extent, I was born brave. But I can also say that it came at a price. When the tsunami hit Thailand, I was in Khao Lak. That event changed me, mentally and physically. I faced death. I could not be the same after that. It changed everything. It gives you perspective on what’s important. Now I live each day, fully alive. There is nothing I’m afraid of anymore. Nothing. But the pain I’ve been through has made its mark. I’ve had a lot of pain in my back and neck. It’s become even more important to me to feel energetic and strong. I jog, which I find meditative, and I exercise often. I know that I feel happier than I look. That’s why I decided to try aesthetic treatments. They enabled me to do something about the wrinkles and not let them determine how I felt. There are so many ways to change the things you’re dissatisfied with. It’s absolutely amazing what you can do today. You can always tweak and tinker with your looks, but what’s most important is what comes from within. You can’t gloss over that. Since the treatments, where I really see the difference is in the forehead area between my eyes where the wrinkles were. It felt good to smooth them out and make myself look a little happier, but I also feel that I have a different luster now. It’s difficult to describe because it’s not immediately visible. Still, something has happened. That, to me, is beauty. When you are at peace with yourself, when you know who you are and what you stand for and you let that woman shine through. See Sandra’s before & after pictures on pages 54–55.

RESTYLANE ENABLED ME TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE WRINKLES AND NOT LET THEM DETERMINE HOW I FEEL.

SILVIA

Age: 47 Family: Husband and children Occupation: Runs a mountain shelter Passions: Family, people

I love to sunbathe. But as a result of being out in the sun so much, I have damaged my skin. Everything was heavily marked – from the area around my eyes and the wrinkles around my mouth to my forehead. I just looked tired and very old. I know quite a few people who have had Restylane filler and Restylane Skinboosters treatments and I was very impressed with their results: their faces didn’t look that different from before. They just looked more relaxed. That’s what I wanted - not to change my identity, but to look less tired. Together with my husband, I run a mountain shelter. It’s a job that puts me in contact with the public, so the way we present ourselves matters. Of course you need to be friendly and polite, but how we look gives the first impression. I think it’s a mark of respect to people to present your best self. This is another reason I decided to have the treatment – because to present your best self, you first need to feel good yourself. I saw results right from the start. I know I look better, which makes me feel better. Everyone else noticed an improvement in my mood and in my appearance, too. So it’s definitely had a positive impact. Because of all my time in the sun, the treatment did not erase all the damage, but I look a lot less tired than before. The doctor advised to regularly repeat the treatment because my skin will respond better each time, and I am committed to doing that because so far, the results are exactly what I was hoping for. See Silvia’s before & after pictures on pages 56–57.

I DIDN’T WANT TO CHANGE MY IDENTITY, JUST LOOK LESS TIRED.

RESTYLANE SKINBOOSTERS Restylane Skinboosters™ are a fresh approach to skin rejuvenation, designed to deliver hydration and improvements in the quality of the skin. Restylane Skinboosters have been shown to improve skin elasticity and hydration, reduce skin surface roughness, and even imperfections such as acne scars4–10 and are suitable for a wide range of age groups and skin types. A recently published study recorded high levels of aesthetic improvement and patient satisfaction after Restylane Skinboosters were administered over three sessions to the face, neck and décolletage7. Restylane Skinboosters are administered as a series of tiny injections. A treatment plan consisting of three treatments applies for Restylane Skinbooster, two to four weeks apart, followed by a maintenance treatment.

As for all injection treatments using hyaluronic acid dermal fillers or Skinboosters, side effects may occur in association with treatment. These side effects are usually mild to moderate and include transient reactions such as redness, pain, swelling, bruising or itching at the injection sites. Please consult your doctor for additional information.
