If You’re Just An Average Hair Stylist, Please Do Not Read This... Let’s face it. The typical salon is just plain boring. It is the same thing day in and day out: Everyone is gossiping; the equipment never works properly; and bootleggers are always selling stuff. Not to mention everyone is piled on top of one another then you have to deal with other stylists hating on you and using your products without your permission and they don’t even return the stuff when they are finished. After a while, it seems to be one continuous chain of events after the other. All this drama can sometimes make you lose focus and perhaps make you depressed to be in such a humdrum environment surrounded by average stylists. Yeah, you are making money and your clients still look good for now - until you become affected, then you become an average stylist, with average clients at an average salon. You begin to believe that this is the norm because it was the same at the salon you were at prior to this one, but it does not have to be that way anymore…

It is a place where stylists with a passion for doing hair can use their talents to have and make money.

We offer: · Free Relocation Assistance You do not have to worry about moving your stuff, we will do that for you. · Free Marketing Assistance You do not have to worry about notifying your clients, we will help you. · A facility that is 100% newly rehabbed and updated You do not have to worry about any plumbing, electrical, or other mechanical issues, we have all new equipment for you. · A clean salon You do not have to worry about your environment, we have a weekly cleaning service. · Towel service You do not have to worry about enough clean towels, we have plenty of towels for you. · Private off Street Parking You do not have to worry about finding a park, we already have one for you. · Premium Security/ Surveillance System You do not have to worry about theft or your safety, we have cameras to monitor the premises. • Full – Time Nail Technician Your clients do not have to go somewhere else to compliment their look with a professional manicure and pedicure, we have someone who will do that for them.

Beauty re Prescription Drugs Causing Your Hair Loss? by Jacqueline Tarrant jackiet@salonnewsusa.com

Many commonly prescribed prescription drugs can cause temporary hair loss, trigger the onset of male and female pattern baldness, and even cause permanent hair loss. Most people just assume that hair loss is purely a genetic issue, when in fact many hair loss issues can be directly attributed to prescription drugs, even taking too much of certain vitamins or over the counter drugs can contribute to hair loss. If you have hair loss issues and need the prescription medicine for a certain illness or condition, treating your condition is important but you may want to ask your doctor about alternative medicines that don’t cause hair loss. Be informed and take action. After all, you are the one that will be without hair! The risk for temporary hair loss is relatively low for most prescription medicines. When hair loss does occur, it may occur after a few weeks or even years of using a particular drug. Just because you have been taking a medicine for 2 years with no problems does not mean that you might not have issues in the future. Always monitor your hair situation. The hair loss that you might experience can be directly related to your dosage, the length of your treatment and how you respond to the medication. In most hair loss cases involving prescription medications, your hair will resume growth about 3 to 4 months after you discontinue the medication. You will need to be patient! There are some medications that can cause hair loss and are also used to promote hair growth. For example, consider hormone replacement therapy drugs and oral contraceptives. These drugs contain progestin, estrogen and female hormones that can cause hair loss in some women. The same exact medicines are prescribed for other women to reverse hair loss, realize that is all about the dosage. Go figure!

Certain prescription drugs for arthritis, gout, blood thinners, high blood pressure, ulcers, Parkinson disease, and cholesterol lowering drugs are associated with hair loss issues. Again, ask your doctor if there is another medication that you can take if you are experiencing hair loss.Your doctor may not mention hair loss as a side effect of some drugs, so don’t forget to do your own research and read the drug manufacturers complete warnings. Your pharmacist can provide you with this information even before you fill a prescription. Many pill and medication guidebooks (sold in bookstores and pharmacies) are also excellent sources of complete information about prescription drugs. If your doctor prescribes any of the following drugs, perhaps one that does not have hair loss as a side effect can be substituted. Here is a list of drugs by category, according to the conditions they treat, then by brand name first followed by the drug’s generic name in parentheses. In some categories, individual drugs are not listed. For these conditions, you will want to discuss the possibility of hair loss as a side effect of using any of the drugs that treat that particular condition, since

Cholesterol

many do contribute to hair loss.

Blood Anticoagulants (blood thinners), including:

Common over-the-counter drugs that can cause hair loss in some cases are ibuprofen and naproxen. You might get rid of your fever with ibuprofen, but you’ll get a big headache if you see your hair falling out. Risk of hair loss with these over the counter medications is very low, but it does happen.

PUBLISHER’S SAY

Happy Spring, everyone. Hopefully, the few snow flurries that are still lingering for the year are winding down now, and spring will be right around the corner. In this issue, we feature Johnny Wright, stylist to the stars, who helped create ultra-sleek, trendsetting hairstyles for the entertainment industry’s most talented celebrities. Most notably, he is the premiere stylist for our nation’s First Lady Michelle Obama. He will be honored at the Proud Lady Beauty Show in April, 2009. Jacqueline Tarrant describes the many commonly prescribed drugs that can cause temporary hair loss, trigger the onset of male and female pattern baldness, and permanent hair loss. She gives solutions on how this can be overcome. Doing make-up is big business. Each year, Americans spend more than $13 billion on cosmetic surgery and tens of billions on cosmetics and beauty aids. According to a career advisor, studies show that attractive students are more successful in the classroom and receive higher evaluations from teachers, handsome criminals get lighter sentences from judges, and good-looking patients get more personalized care from their doctors. So, do your looks really matter in the workplace? Do looks also matter in your day-to-day interaction with the public? Read Sheila Perry’s article to get answers to these questions. Al Washington reports that Vitamin D (specifically the D3 form) is a vital essential component for the prevention and treatment of cancer and for every autoimmune disease such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and lupus. Vitamin D3 is the best single most cost effective way to prevent and treat disease. We hope you enjoy the issue and learning about all the new developments in the beauty industry. Feature oes Attractiveness Lead to Success? by Sheila Perry

Many were glued to their television sets a couple of weeks ago to watch the 40th NAACP Image Awards. Some wanted to see who would win the prestigious awards, and others only wanted to view the most luscious eye candy walking across the stage. As a teenager, I recall my mother saying, “Lord, help the ugly child.” What makes people attractive? Does attractiveness help when it comes to getting a job? Doing make-up is big business. Each year, Americans spend more than $13 billion on cosmetic surgery and tens of billions on cosmetics and beauty aids. According to a career advisor, studies show that attractive students are more successful in the classroom and receive higher evaluations from teachers, handsome criminals get lighter sentences from judges, and good-looking patients get more personalized care from their doctors. So, do your looks really matter in the workplace? Do looks also matter in your day-to-day interaction with the public? According to a popular job search website, plain people earn 5 percent to 10 percent less than people of average looks, who in turn earn 3 percent to 8 percent less than those believed to be good looking. This is rather startling statistics. These findings concur with other research that shows the penalty for being homely exceeds the premium for beauty and that across all occupations, the effects are greater for men than women. Researchers at the University of North Carolina and University of Florida found that tall people earn more money throughout their careers than their shorter co-workers. I recall that the majority of my supervisors have been big, not overweight, but tall.

Salon News USA March - April 2 k 9.p65

What is the latest on attractiveness research? Findings show that people from different cultures have the same ideas on what makes someone attractive. They focus on three aspects of attractiveness: 1) averageness or lack of distinctness, 2) symmetry, that is, how well does one side of the face reflect the other side of the face; and 3) sexual dimorphism, which is just another way of looking at what makes a person very masculine or very feminine, or just plain sexy. Being average is attractive, when it comes to some key features, such as big eyes and small chins in women, but being non-average can be better, according to Science News. Think pleasant thoughts. This may translate to how your face moves. One researcher said that attractiveness in facial features relates to how faces move, that is, you don’t just wear a stone face. More movements of the face - blinking, nodding and head tilting – made women’s faces more attractive to males and females in one study. Many lessons have been learned by researchers in the animal kingdom. Animals show that female mammals look for the healthiest males with whom to mate and have offspring. Humans are not that different. In some studies, people associate being healthy with being attractive. According to Science News, a study found that people who used symmetry and averageness as part of their measurement, also considered beautiful people to be healthy. For example, people with healthier looking skin were judged to be more attractive.

Good-looking men and women are assumed to be more talented, kind, honest and intelligent than their less attractive counterparts. Some research shows that people will go out of their way to help attractive people of the same or opposite sex. But on the flip side of this, just look at the newspaper or television. Some of the world’s most successful people have been ordinary looking. The other day, a friend went to the department store and had her make-up done. Before she knew it, she had spent a small fortune for eye liner, blush, lip stick, foundation, and all the other products to enhance her features. Did she regret it? Not at all! “I didn’t know I could look so fantastic! I really look great, and I feel wonderful!” Her cosmetics and the determination to look her best helped her to put her best face forward. Finding the selfconfidence contributes to feeling good about yourself. Being positive shines through to others and makes a person attractive. Hiring managers say it is the appearance of confidence that they find attractive, not physical beauty. Attractiveness has more to do with how you carry yourself and the energy you display. Have good eye contact, act upbeat and excited about life, dress well (Be daring and add a bit of color to your wardrobe.)

Buchi Upjohn Aghaji a Nigerian born artist dips his brush into vastly different hues when creating his works. He expresses his art through a variety of media including oil, watercolor and acrylic on cold-pressed paper, canvas, burlap, wood, and pottery. The result is a refreshing change from the contemporary trend in Afro-centric painting. Aghaji says that while he was always interested in painting, his studies at the university steered him into the advertising field where he worked for a year in Nigeria. It wasn’t until he moved to England that he realized that he could pursue his painting full time. The response he received from his work was so encouraging that he and an illustrator friend opened a studio.

H

Wellness Intelligence ow To Slash Your Cancer Risk by 90% by Al Washington awashington@salonnewsusa.com

We know that the general answer is healthy food and exercise. However, the optimal answer is healthy food, exercise and Vitamin D. Vitamin D (specifically the D3 form) is a vital essential component for the prevention and treatment of cancer and for every autoimmune disease such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and lupus. Vitamin D3 is the best single most cost effective way to prevent and treat disease. Ninety eight percent of what we know about Vitamin D3 has only been gleaned in the last 10 years. Documented studies support its importance in preventing and treating lymphoma, breast, lung and prostate cancers. 85% of white Americans are Vitamin D3 deficient, whereas 99% of African Americans are deficient. This may relate to the fact that we have the higher rates of these cancers and other diseases.

What Does Vitamin D3 Do? Current scientific research suggests that all cells and tissues in your body have vitamin D receptors and therefore every cell and tissue needs vitamin D for its well being. Vitamin D is also responsible for the regulation of over 2,000 genes of the 30,000 genes in your body. Vitamin D3 impacts an incredible array of support for systems and functions in your body such as: heart health, cell formation and cell longevity, skin health, pancreatic health, aging process, sleep patterns, hearing, reproductive health, athletic performance, eye health, vascular system health, respiratory health, immune health (most people feel in better health during summer sunshine months…ever wonder why?), healthy mood and feelings of well-being, weight management including carbohydrate and fat metabolism, hair and hair follicles, strong and healthy bones (encourages calcium uptake), muscles and proper digestion.

Salon News USA March - April 2 k 9.p65

13

Are You Vitamin D3 Deficient? The best way to raise your Vitamin D3 level is not with supplements, but by exposing your bare skin to sunshine. Getting sun exposure is not always practical or even feasible, depending on where you live. The cancer rate in Iceland is 90 per 100,000 people. Those in the tropics have rates of 25 per 100,000!! During winter when sun exposure is not a possibility, then supplementation is required. The best supplement is cod liver oil with vitamin D3 capsules as second best. Carlson’s Norwegian Cod Liver Oil is highly rated. www.carlsonlabs.com

“An estimated 150,000 cases of cancer could be prevented by increasing Vitamin D levels per Dr. William Grant, a renowned Vitamin D researcher”

Vitamin D3 is fat soluble but it needs to get in your bloodstream to reach all your cells. Your fat reserves affect how and what amounts of Vitamin D3 finally reach your blood. The best way to determine your blood levels is to get your Vitamin D3 levels tested before you begin, and then at regular levels so you can tell when you reach the optimal level. You can find out your levels by asking your doctor for a blood test. There are two Vitamin D3 tests – 1,25(OH)D and 25(OH)D. The correct test is 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D. There are also two primary labs in the US and you ONLY want to use Lab Corp, NOT Quest to perform this test.

The OPTIMAL value of vitamin D3 you want has been raised to 50-65 ng/ml, with even higher recommended levels required for more serious disease prevention or treatment.

For safety purposes it is advisable to optimize your vitamin D3 levels only with the help of a trained health care professional since this is not a one-size fits all vitamin. Toxicity is not a major problem with Vitamin D3 and most people can safely use up to 3,000 IU daily.

Deficient

<50 ng/ml

Optimal

50-65 ng/ml

Treat Cancer 65-90 ng/dl Excess

ng/ml > 100

Your vitamin D3 level should NEVER be below 32ng/ ml. Levels below 20ng/ml are serious deficiency states and will increase you risk of breast and prostate cancer and autoimmune diseases like MS and rheumatoid arthritis. There are two types of vitamin D supplements: vitamin D3, which comes from fish oil and the plant source D2. D2 is less biologically active. Vitamin D3 is found in eggs, organ meats, animal fat, cod liver oil and fish. It is the equivalent to the vitamin D3 formed on your skin by the sun. Just because it is sunny and hot outside is not an indication of the amount of ultraviolet light present for Vitamin D3. If your latitude is above 30 degrees north or below 30 degrees south, you need vitamin D3 supplementation from September to May.

F

our Seasons Bangkok A decade ago, while hoteliers were swooping into booming Bangkok, Four Seasons sent additional scouts further afoot – to Thailand’s second city, moat-wrapped and laidback Chiang Mai. The first to tap the luxury potential here, Four Seasons set up in Mae Rim at the foot of the velvety green Suthap Mountains, unveiling one of the most lovely landscapes on the planet. A wise move as the former capital of the Lanna Kingdom has blossomed as a tourist destination known for night markets, night safaris and riverside restaurants.

If you’re bringing friends, you can rent out a spacious private villa of intricately-designed salas, wading pools and terraces that peer out onto pastoral splendor and tree houses; those in villas also have access to the resident-only swimming pool with its spectacular reclining Buddhas.

A half-hour out of the city, Four Seasons is a magnet for those seeking rural bliss, whether being stretched with Thai massage in the spa or learning the art of whipping up coconut prawn soups in the open-air cooking school. Visitors to the region should not dare leave before drinking in these heartstirring views, even if only stopping by for a sunset cocktail from the lobby deck. Also famous: Sunday brunches at the on-site cooking school.

Spa Set in a jungle of tropical foliage and coconut palms studded with Thai sculptures, Four Seasons Chiang Mai unfolds a fetching scene every which way, starting with the open air lobby that spills a stunning view of the grounds – the towers of the villas to the right, the guest pavilions on stilts to the left, and the rice paddies complete with wandering water buffaloes in between.

Golf carts whisk guest past streams and over wood bridges to the spacious guest pavilions oversized bathing areas where glass enclosed tub looks out onto sculpture garden. Thick with gorgeous furniture and a canopied bed — with private screened terraces perfect for dining or drinks – these pavilions are romantic love shacks ideal for an amorous getaway.

ome Thoughts on Protein by Dr. Moyo The Harvard School of Public Health says the following about protein:

A few years ago, I visited a refugee camp in Mozambique. Before making the all-day trip, I thought I would be prepared for what I saw. When I arrived, I was still overwhelmed by the sight of countless rows of make-shift tents. I saw very thin adults and children walking about, and some just sitting as if waiting for someone to come and save them. I saw children with extended bellies from kwashiorkor, a disease where fluid leaks out of the blood and accumulates in the belly and legs because of protein malnutrition. They lacked protein in their diets. No sounds of running and playing greeted my ears like you would expect young children to make. Also, they did not gather much concern from the adults, who seemed to be just as listless as they were, though better fed. The children just stared at me with big, glassy eyes. I had gone to visit the camp as part of my job assignment as a journalist. It is very important to have adequate protein in one’s diet. I still consider myself a “sittin’ on the fence” vegetarian, so I have to really make a conscious effort to include protein in my meals. While having lunch with a friend, he asked me if I were getting adequate amounts of protein. I started asking myself questions and did a bit of research.

Animal protein and vegetable protein probably have the same effects on health. It’s the protein package that’s likely to make a difference. A 6-ounce broiled porterhouse steak is a great source of protein—38 grams worth. But it also delivers 44 grams of fat, 16 of them saturated. That’s almost three-fourths of the recommended daily intake for saturated fat. The same amount of salmon gives you 34 grams of protein and 18 grams of fat, 4 of them saturated. A cup of cooked lentils has 18 grams of protein, but under 1 gram of fat. When choosing protein-rich foods, pay attention to what comes along with the protein. Vegetable sources of protein, such as beans, nuts, and whole grains, are excellent choices, and they offer healthy fiber, vitamins and minerals. The best animal protein choices are fish and poultry. If you are partial to red meat, stick with the leanest cuts, choose moderate portion sizes, and make it only an occasional part of your diet. I eat small amounts of poultry and fish more readily than I have before. I have forced myself to eat at least two servings of fish per week. I try to eat plenty of dark green leafy vegetables. When living in Japan, I ate seaweed, tofu, and fish for my first meal of the day. To bolster my intake of proteins, I bought edame, which I boiled with a bit of sea salt.

Over the weekend, I saw an article on the federal government’s efforts to control the amount of protein consumed by children. As of last month, the government stopped paying for whole milk for low-income pregnant and nursing mothers. Parents do not like having to change to low-fat milk; they believe the whole milk is the healthiest choice. According to Nourishing Traditions, by Sally Fallon, few topics have caused more debate than the discussion over milk. The author believes our commercial milk supply is harmful to our health. “Modern pasteurized milk, devoid of its enzyme content, puts an enormous strain on the body’s digestive mechanism. In the elderly, and those with milk intolerance or inherited weaknesses of digestion, this milk passes throughout not fully digested and can build up in the small intestine.” Sally suggests buying raw milk tested free of tuberculosis and brucellosis and allowed to feed on fresh pasturage. It is difficult to find this kind of milk in America. In California, New Mexico and Connecticut, raw milk is available in health food stores, although such milk often comes from cows raised in confinement. Sally stated that some states allow farmers to sell raw milk to consumers. There are farmers who will sell raw milk from old-fashioned Jersey or Guernsey cows (or from goats), tested free of tuberculosis and brucellosis and allowed to feed on fresh pasturage. For butter from pasture-fed cows and organic ghee by mail order, see www.Realmilk.com for a listing of raw milk and milk products from pasture-fed animals.
