“It is nevertheless true, with most gentle phytopharmaceuticals, that there is no standardized active principle that solely or largely determines the drug action. The gentle phytopharmaceuticals demonstrate in particular that with plant remedies one very often has a comprehensive complex of active principles, with individual components interacting with others, so that only the complex as a whole will produce the therapeutic action. -Rudolf Fritz Weiss, M.D.

We formulated our Tonic line to be safe for daily consumption and effective for general care of the system at hand. That being said, it isn’t always necessary to “treat” a system. Let us delve a bit deeper on how to use this line for the best results. As a naturopathic physician by trade, we use a model called The Therapeutic Order to determine where-in-the-health action needs to be taken.

The first step in the pyramid is pretty obvious to most (although often not utilized). It’s what we call our Foundations of Health. Within our clinic at Mission Health we talk about this being a healthy diet, routine movement, adequate sleep, and supportive psychology and relationships. Let me explain, because when isn’t it a good time to put a plug in for what health looks like? A healthy diet doesn’t mean you’re gluten free. And maybe you are gluten free and you feel great and that does the trick, and kudos to you. It also doesn’t mean that your diet is super restrictive, or that you can’t enjoy cake every now and then. It does mean that you eat vegetables often, if not daily, if not with every meal. It also means you have a healthy psychological relationship with food. I’m the first one to admit that well over half of my patients have an eating disorder, and that’s not the reason they are coming to me. In fact, they rarely realize they have an eating disorder. We call it orthorexia in my world. It means you have an unhealthy obsession with eating healthy. Let that one wrap around your brain, and then take a moment to check in. Movement also can have it’s own obsessions but I don’t see nearly as many of those patients as the orthorexic community. Move your body daily, in a way that feels good. Maybe you’re super into olympic weightlifting, or running, dancing, yoga, juggling, singing with high velocity arm movements, or perhaps vacuuming is really rewarding for you. The point is, you don’t need to perform high intensity exercise, or even purposeful weight loss exercise in order for the body to respond & respect. That’s right. Your body needs respect. It’s a temple someone, somewhere once said. So think about how you show it love by moving in appropriate ways that fosters self compassion. About that compassion. I’m a biggie for psychology. I won’t go into the soap boxes just yet (this is a product guide afterall), but it’s coming soon. I heard a quote once that said something along the lines of “Before you consider yourself depressed, make sure you’re not surrounding yourself with a bunch of a-holes”. That includes yourself. More or less, that is my philosophy on compassion, self care, and psychology. Don’t be an a-hole towards others, and more so towards yourself (and don’t surround yourself with them). And

then

there’s

sleep.

Sleep

well.

It’s

imperative.

So that is step 1. If you get more questions you can set up an appointment with me (Dr. Acesta) at www.BecomeYourMission.org. Step 2 (stimulate the body’s ability to heal) and step 3 (support weakened systems) is where our Tonic line comes in. Something we encourage you to do for yourself is contemplate what your weakest system is. We do this in our clinic with our patients, but you should be able to glean some light here without my help. Your weakest system is where sickness lands. Maybe you always get skin rashes and weird breakouts with unhealthy lifestyles. Or perhaps during times of high stress it often turns into a chest cold. People with migraine headaches and mood inconsistencies may be dealing with the nervous system. You can look to your family history as well, perhaps finding a lineage of cardiovascular or thyroid problems. Anywho, you get the point. There is always one weakest link. Find it, support it. That’s where our Tonic line comes in. If used in this intended way, you would take a smaller dose, over a longer period of time. Our Tonics can also be used for short term ailments of a given system. The directions provided on the label are for this intent, with treatment lasting the duration of what’s available in the bottle. Again, all of our Tonic line is safe for daily, consistent, long term use. We always recommend that you consult with a health care physician, preferably someone well versed in herbalism before starting or stopping any regimen. Refer to the product information in this guide for more details.

1oz 14.50 2oz 24.50 4oz 39.50

One of our first formulations and still one of our best sellers. Welcome your 4th phase of life lovingly with our 4th Femme. Hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and minor mood fluctuations are common but not necessary in and throughout menopause. Ease the tension with our 4th Femme Tonic. Take daily for best results. Wild yam and chaste tree help to support the progesterone pathways. Blue and black cohosh help to ease mood fluctuations and estrogen imbalances. Dong quai is a traditional remedy of modulation for hormones and helps to bring warmth into an otherwise cooling formula. Ingredients: organic black cohosh, organic blue cohosh, wild yam, dong quai, and chaste tree berry infused in organic cane spirits.

Devil’s club (Oplopanax horridus) bark and stem are used in teas, decoctions and tinctures as an adrenal adaptogen aimed towards the mesomorphic soul, prone to diabetes, hypertension, and high lipid levels. The fatigue that comes with this adrenal depletion is one of dark exhaustion. His power is rooted in the ginseng family line. We are proud to highlight him in our Adrenal TONIC, appropriately paired with the Desert Queen (ashwagandha) to his Forest Kingship, tulsi glycerite to add a little pizzazz to the gloom, and ginger to push it through. We hope you enjoy this true adrenal blend. Ingredients: Wildcrafted devils club, locally grown organic ashwagandha root, and locally grown organic tulsi (holy basil) infused in organic cane spirits and non-gmo vegetable glycerin.

Bitter Tonic

Bitter herbs play an important role in healthy digestion by stimulating digestive secretions, improving appetite, alleviating gas, bloating and indigestion. Bitters not only increase the digestibility of foods but can calm the nervous system so that you are emotionally prepared to eat. Most of us have a dramatic lack of bitterness in our daily diets. Our Bitter Tonic is the quintessential Pacific Northwest variety by highlighting Oregon Grape root. Known to be intensely bitter and helps to maintain a healthy liver function and bile production. Fennel, cardamom, ginger, and dandelion root are added to create a well-rounded digestive bitter, bit of flare, and full digestive support. Take 10-30 drops directly on the tongue or in a small amount of water (make sure you can still taste the bitter flavor) 10 to 15 minutes before a meal. Bitters can also be taken after a meal. 1oz 14.50 2oz 24.50 4oz 39.50

Blue Elderberry Elixir

Elderberry is often used as an ally for fighting colds, flu, and respiratory infection. Rose hips provide a boost of vitamin C. Cinnamon, ginger, and clove are warming, helping to circulate the goodness throughout your body. A touch of dark maple syrup makes this elixir delicious and soothing. Take 2-3 teaspoons as needed to avoid catching a cold or flu. At the first sign of illness take frequently throughout the day. Blue Elderberry Elixir may be taken alone or mixed into a cup of warming tea. Ingredients: Brandy, blue elderberries, organic dark robust maple syrup, organic rose hips, organic ginger, organic true cinnamon, organic clove. Note: Throughout history, elderberry has been revered as a magical and sacred plant, used to ward off evil influences, carried for good luck and to protect the home. 4oz 39.50

Chokecherry Cough Syrup

Made from hand picked wild chokecherries (Prunus virginiana), wild cherry bark, organic hyssop, organic anise, and organic ginger, infused in organic cane alcohol and local honey. Wild cherry bark has long been used for coughs and colds. Wild cherry bark can help relax and open the respiratory pathways. Hyssop cools and moistens and can also help relieve pain from sore throats. Anise and ginger are warming and spicy, reducing inflammation and relieving dry spasmodic coughs. This cough elixir is magic to relax and soothe a cough while opening respiratory pathways. The astringent chokecherries help bring it all together and give this elixir and wonderful flavor. Ingredients: Hand-picked local wild chokecherries (Prunus virginiana), organic wild cherry bark, organic hyssop, organic anise, and organic ginger, extracted in organic cane spirits and honey. 4oz 39.50

Cramps Tonic

The traditional menstrual cramp herb (Viburnum opulus) appropriately named cramp bark, has historically been used for monthly discomforts, although there is reason to believe it would help anyone out in the COX2 inhibitor pathways (the same mechanism for ibuprofen and aspirin). We pair this traditional remedy with black haw, white willow, wild yam, and ginger to round out the ebb and flow. Black haw is another Viburnum family member that is specific to the kidneys and water retention. It is traditionally used as a spasmolytic for the uterus, helpful both in menstrual regulation and post-partum (although this blend is not intended for breastfeeding mamas). White willow continues its support on the pain relieving front, while wild yam helps to ground the formula with its active constituent of diosgenin, known to be helpful in menstrual irregularities with an estrogen etiology. 1oz 14.50 2oz 24.50 4oz 39.50

Foucs Tonic

Keeping it together with double extracted Lions mane, calamus root, gotu kola, and rosemary. This blend is great for adults with a scattered brain, the occasional bout of brain fog, pulling late term paper all nighters, and those looking to support their nervous system. Lion’s mane is getting more notoriety for its nervous system support. Best when used long term. Calamus root is a wonderful fast acting herb that helps direct and focus attention. Rooted in marshy wetlands this is a beautiful example of Pacific Northwest herbalism. We pair them with gotu kola and rosemary, researched for enhancing circulation to the brain (presumably through oxygenation). They also provide the driving force to give this tonic its aim at both short term and long term use. Take 1-2 dropperfuls as needed, or daily for continued nervous system & brain support. Gomasio (Thyroid Tonic)

Support your thyroid with our delicious gomasio, a traditional salt replacement in Japanese culture. Our blend of organic black and white sesame seeds, wildcrafted bladderwrack, Pacific sea salt, wildcrafted kelp fronds, organic milk thistle seed and organic nettle, is delicious, nutritious, and an easy way to #eatyourherbs Most formulas and practitioners agree that in every good thyroid blend you must also support the other HPA axis organs, along with liver and detoxification support. Milk thistle supports liver function. The sea vegetables (bladderwrack and kelp fronds) help to support natural iodine levels, along with other trace minerals not readily found through the diet. Sesame seeds are a traditional TCM functional food support. Nettles support the kidneys and liver, adding to the functional herbalism profile of this formula. This is a delicious blend meant to be enjoyed daily. Powder 14.50

Gut-biotic

Healthy Gut

Powder 19.50

Powder 19.50

Not for the faint at heart, our gut-biotic does the trick for those troublesome gut problems. Our gut-biotic is meant to be taken as a short term staple in a larger protocol (like with our Healthy Gut blend). Always consult a qualified physician before use. Artemisia is used for a wide variety of gut disturbances, including parasites, bacterial overgrowth, and the like. Most commonly known for its use in the beverage absinth, artemisia is an extremely bitter herbs (thus its effect of the digestive system). We pair it with the Pacific Northwest staple of Oregon grape root, another bitter, astringent herb. Helpful for gut dysbiosis and improper regulation, we recommend our gut-biotic under physician supervision for when things have wandered from norm. Cardamom also supports the digestive system, acting as a sialogogue (promotes salivary secretion), spicy astringent, that helps to cut the (intense) flavor.

A blend of powdered organic aloe vera, marshmallow root, calendula, plantain, and a hint of ginger. Our Gut Tonic is for the occasional ups and downs and can be taken to support a healing protocol for gut inflammation. Add these powdered herbs to liquid to coat the gastrointestinal tract to help gut mucosal turnover, leaky gut, and gut inflammation. This herbal powder (like all of our powders) are full strength and thus do not dissolve in water. Aloe vera is a traditional digestive restorative, often used in functional foods historically. Marshmallow root is another Pacific Northwest favorite, helpful for its mucilaginous properties, healing the gut lining. Calendula flowers and petals helps to maintain gut flora and adds its actions as a lymphagogue. Plantain helps to heal and correct intestinal flora, while ginger acts as a driver for this well used, multifactorial formula.

Immune Tonic

A powerhouse blend of powdered medicinal mushrooms (turkey tail, reishi, chaga, shiitake, and cordyceps) to support and nourish your immune system. Take a teaspoon a day in food or hot beverage (tip: great added to coffee grounds in the brew cycle). This is one of our most loved general support formulas. Mushrooms at large have an impressive profile of medicinal action. Most of the research is currently looking into their beta-glucans as a main constituent of action, but as most herbalist recognize, it’s the whole herb that works synergistically with the body. We always promote the use of herbalism through functional food items, and this medicinal mushroom blend is precisely that. Add them to your stews, soups, and broths. Take them daily with your brewed morning beverage. Bake them into your breads and pastry crusts. The possibilities are endless in how to prepare them. Powder 19.50

Licrocie + Molasses

Organic licorice root infused in organic cane alcohol and blackstrap molasses. Licorice root is a TCM staple and has a variety of functions in herbal medicine including gut dysfunction, acid reflux, adrenal regulation, skin problems, liver support, hormonal balance, and will soothe a sore throat. One of the powerhouse adrenal remedies, licorice is a ubiquitous aid in most formulas. Considered a driver by some and a main medicinal by others, licorice often rounds out formulations and offers synergy. Licorice root should be used under the supervision of a trained physician, and is contraindicated if you have high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm, chronic heart failure, or low potassium. Licorice root should not be taken for extended time periods. 4oz 39.50

Supporting the liver can help with a multitude of health layers, including skin conditions, hormone regulation, and gut dysfunction. Rumex (yellow dock) and dandelion are thought traditionally to be “blood purifiers”, normally an attribute given to liver function. Burdock and milk thistle or quintessential liver herbs working in a more potent manner than the aforementioned. Muscle Down

For those moments when you need a little more than the edge to come off. We recommend our Pain Tonic for the occasional bumps and bruises, headaches and the like. Muscle Down was formulated for more intense times. Wild lettuce and California poppy help to dull out unwanted pains, which in turn will dull out other functions as well. We do not recommend taking Muscle Down while needing to operate machinery, babysit your niece, or any other activity that takes attention to detail. Jamaican dogwood helps with neuropathic pain and also produces drowsiness. Blue vervain helps us take the edge off of the emotional toll this sometimes brings. Passionflower, while also producing drowsiness, helps to maintain balance and perspective while dealing with the full plate. Ingredients: wild lettuce, California poppy, Jamaican dogwood, blue vervain, turmeric, and passionflower. 1oz 14.50 2oz 24.50 4oz 39.50

Night Tonic

For those with sleep problems beyond the restless nights, this blend of Jamaican dogwood is helpful for more complicated sleep problems due to pain, discomfort, coming off sleep medications, and the like. Always consult a qualified physician before use. For the anxious sleep disturbances we recommend our Sleep Tonic, for those with more complex ailments we recommend our Night Tonic. Jamaican dogwood is used for its drowsiness properties, along with minimizing neuropathic pain; such as restless leg syndrome, or pain with a nerve quality. Night Tonic, while safe and effective should not be used in high doses (greater than 5 dropper fulls per day) and will produce drowsiness, so it not recommended for use while operative machinery or driving. Ingredients: organic Jamaican dogwood, organic valerian root, organic hops, organic passionflower, organic lavender, infused in organic spirits and non-gmo vegetable glycerin. 1oz 14.50 2oz 24.50 4oz 39.50

A touch of Jamaican dogwood helps to ease nervous tension, without enough to be drowsy. Ginger and lavender help round out this astringent formula. This formula has been used in a snap when our Cramps Tonic isn’t around helping menstrual pains, to tension headaches, to bum knees. Take 1-2 dropper fulls as needed. This formula is fast acting, as you’ll see results within 15 minutes of initial use. Ingredients: white willow, Jamaican dogwood, ginger, and lavender. 1oz 14.50 2oz 24.50 4oz 39.50

Sleep Tonic

Sleep Tonic is an herbal extract to encourage restful sleep. Perfect for those nights where you toss and turn and can’t seem to drift off. Valerian, Hops, and Passionflower all help promote restful sleep especially when anxiety and stress are preventing your mind from calming. Lavender glycerite provides a hint of sweetness and flavor. This blend is calming without a heavy sedative effect and is non-addictive. Sleep Tonic can also be taken in smaller amounts during the day to help reduce anxiety. For sleep purposes we recommend starting with 2 dropper fulls before bed. You can take an addition dose if needed, or if waking in the middle of the night. While our Sleep Tonic is effective, it is not our tastiest formula. Add it to juice or water if desired. Ingredients: Organic valerian root, organic hops strobili, organic passionflower, and organic lavender infused in organic spirits and non-gmo vegetable glycerin. 1oz 14.50 2oz 24.50 4oz 39.50

Stress Tonic calms, cools, and relaxes and help you maintain a sense of peace without feeling drowsy. It can be taken on an as-needed basis or as a long term formula to reduce more chronic conditions. Peach leaf calms and soothes anxiety particularly when heat and irritation is involved. Motherwort is a gentle nervine that can be used to sedate and calm excess nervous energy, and has an affinity for the heart (energetic and physical). Schisandra is an adaptogen that works to reduce stress by modulating hormones and enhancing the body’s physiological adaptive responses to stress. Skullcap soothes nervous tension while renewing and reviving the central nervous system. Ingredients: local organic peach leaves and twigs, organic motherwort, organic Schisandra berry, and organic skull cap, with a touch of honey.

We have paired the soft and soothing sage and licorice to soothe the throat and entice the taste buds. Spilanthes (also called buzz buttons for the tingling sensation this herb produces) is used to help numb the throat for those irritating coughs. Licorice root helps soothe, moisten, and heal. Sage is a warming astringent herb that can help with post nasal drip and other unwanted mucous attributes. Anise works to warm and help circulate the formula. A helpful tip: make sure you aim for the back of the throat with this spray. If you hit the spot, you’ll be glad you did. Spray as needed, on both sides of the throat box. Ingredients: Garden grown sage, organic licorice root, organic spilanthes blossoms, wildcrafted osha root, organic anise, infused in organic spirits and non-gmo vegetable glycerin.

Tapping into the parasympathetic nervous system takes more than just herbs, but this tonic can help with the process. Our parasympathetic nervous system helps with “rest and digest”. We use our Vagus Tonic for not only the neuronal recouping, but also for gut problems with a nervous system etiology; like lower esophageal dysfunction, delayed gastric emptying, and other gut disturbances reliant on the neural networks. We use fumaria as our powerhouse in this blend, then taper it to a tolerable taste with chamomile and ginger, both helping the digestive pathways. While this might not be the most delicious blend we craft, it has worked wonders in my patients who know.

Viral Punch

Viruses come in all shades and symptoms, from the common cold to stressful outbreaks. Our viral punch can be paired with a larger treatment plan to ease the occasional outbursts, and to ward off what might be to come. Olive leaf is the quintessential viral prevention herb, paired with oregano to give it a punch. Baptisia can be used both preventively and for acutes, as lemon balm eases the stress that inevitably shows alongside, as well as aiding in the viral protection. We often get the response that this formula tastes like a “intense salad in your mouth”. We take it straight from the bottle, but like all our formulas, you can dilute it with water or cranberry juice if it helps the medicinal go down. Ingredients: Organic olive leaf, organic oregano, organic wild indigo, and organic lemon balm infused in organic cane spirits and non-gmo vegetable glycerin. 1oz 14.50 2oz 24.50 4oz 39.50

Keely + Kristen

Dr. Kristen Acesta received her doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University and practices in the Wenatchee Valley at her clinic, Mission Health & Wellness, where she focuses on awareness, foundations of health, and understanding the multitude layers of chronic health concerns, both physical and emotional. All of our products are medicinal grade and condition specific for this purpose. In her spare time she spearheads Salt Creek Apothecary’s marketing, sales, and distribution, all the while mastering the art of speaking in the third person. She also runs a low key yoga and movement studio in her hometown of Cashmere.

“I’ve told this story too many times at this point, but the meeting of Keely and I was serendipitous. She won my heart when she pulled out the detailed excel spreadsheet of her medicinal productions. I needed that organization in my life. I needed her wisdom, finesse, and meticulous attention to detail. I’m just hoping, likewise, she needs my crazy, fiery, and sometimes elaborate sense of (business) adventure.” Kristen

Meet the makers

Keely Murdoch holds her masters in biology and works her “day job” as a fishery scientist, but we prefer to call her our Botanical Chemist. Focusing on bioregional herbalism, Keely gained her inspiration from the plants that surround us everyday, in the mountains, along the rivers, and in her own garden where she spends her time. Ingredients are thoughtfully sourced, homegrown, or ethically wild-crafted in her hands. She works methodically at producing every bit that Salt Creek offers in her utmost act of compassion. She also is pretty badass and plays hockey on the side. Our story is a mild fairytale. Dr. Acesta wanted to bring local herbalism to the community by stepping further away from ‘pills for cures’ medicine, over consumption of supplements, unethical sourcing of herbs, along with inadequate use. Herbalism being reduced to a symptom-cure relationship reaps the wisdom of Earth’s bounty into a bland, single constituent, compassionless, green medicine model.

Keely couldn’t agree more. At the time of their meeting she was deepening her love of craft but not sure where to take it (or whether to stop). She wanted a bigger influence to be able to share her herbal gifts, encouraging her community to breathe & live the medicine of the garden, lakes, and rivers around us. The initial meeting was quick. They formed a partnership thereafter and what was then called Celia’s Salt Creek Apothecary was rebranded as the Salt Creek Apothecary you know today. This is their calling, to bring medicine to the people.

Devil’s Club

“This is what the things can teach us: to fall, patiently to trust our heaviness. Even a bird has to do that before he can fly.” -Rainer Maria Rilke He is our fiercely armored heal-all, the Native Indigenous healers believe. We were taught not to fall into his trap of hauntingly beautiful spines, his latin name ringing true of their horror. Perched within the damp forest so familiar to us, he is the gatekeeper of that mindset some of us find ourselves in; the Seattle depression, the winter blues, and it’s continuum to introspection and self reflection. When you feel like you have nothing more to give, your energy depleted, he stands tall. Can you feel the heaviness of his surroundings? You stumble upon him in the thick fog of the cold Pacific Northwest rainforest, with a glimmer of light in a limited clearing, so reminiscent of ourselves. Are you searching for that glimmer? His red berries hanging like ornaments on this holiday tree, showcasing the danger he’s capable of. Yet he’s not there to harm you. He’s there to protect you. Let him carry your burdens. Devil’s club (Oplopanax horridus) is used extensively in spiritual practices; burning, smudging, and bathing, for it’s supposed protective nature. It’s bark and stem are used in teas, decoctions and tinctures as an adrenal adaptogen aimed towards the mesomorphic soul, prone to diabetes, hypertension, and high lipid levels. The fatigue that comes with this adrenal depletion is one of dark exhaustion. His power is rooted in the ginseng family line. Can you feel it? We are proud to highlight him in our Adrenal Tonic.

Herb Profile That is all. Fear no more, says the heart. Fear no more says the heart, committing its burden to some sea, which sighs collectively for all sorrows, renews, begins, collects, and lets fall. - Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway, P. 39-40

Sing To Me Peru “Using plants is merely facilitating a biochemical conversation for which is often far beyond our comprehension and understanding” -Bevin Claire Keely and I made a pact. We were only about 6 months into our business partnership when I decided that, without a doubt, we needed to take this ethnobotany course being offered by a mentor of mine, Dr. Jillian Stansbury. Of course it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Of course it was a leap of faith. Of course it was going to be amazing. We decided right then and there that we would continue our passion for herbalism and love of learning by supporting each other through yearly conferences and education platforms, and making herbal dreams come true every other year by exploring our roots, traditions, ancestry, ethnobotany, and abroad. These trips were going to be epic. Needless to say, Peru didn’t fail us. A huge thanks to our mentor, leader, apothecary wise woman, Dr. Jillian Stansbury for hosting us. Below is an excerpt from our online journal, reflecting our trip. Sign up for our newsletter on our website if this strikes your fancy. We also plug in updates on medicinal offerings, specials, and herbal thoughts swirling through our head.

“You revere scientists and shamans alike, providing them with what they need to do their good work for the enhancement of the realm.” -Rob Brezsny And here we are. Walking this fine line between action and insight. The litany of ayahuasca ceremonies offered by beautiful white women from Sweden paint the scene of needed spiritual connection along the streets of Cusco. As if they’ve found it. The horticulturist and research scientist leading our herb walk smiles as he casually explains the medicinal actions of the main plant used in such regards. “Our shamans use it for when people are stuck.” He laughs assuredly; but he’s never taken it himself. He seems grounded enough. Perhaps he’s never been lost and confused in

life, like the hoards of white travelers coming to Cusco for just that. His mother was the midwife in town. His knowledge of female conditions and herbs is on point. Infertility to the left, heavy bleeding to the right. This one is for cramps that come from deep uterine pain. He is large, masculine, and wastes no time in his explanations or his walk. Yet his presence is gentle and yielding. I wonder what it means to be stuck. Have I ever been unstuck? The jungle is clammy and unruly. By midday the sun has created a hot box of steam, sweat, and stale air even under the canopy of large pothos vining around ancient ferns and cinchona trees (known for the quinine content in their bark; one of the first remedies for malaria). We’d dive into the murky waters nearby, but there’s a mild hesitancy of piranhas. Apparently there are two types. The small ones are more aggressive. It wasn’t entirely clear which variety were in this lake… Lost in translation was a common theme. The cultural intricacies of communication are not always so black and white; thus the beauty of ethnobotany. It’s not about the actions of the plants and what to do with them. It’s how the story is told. It’s the generations of grandmotherly use, knowing exactly what that fever looks like in a small child and the relation to the growth of the plant.

Deeper into the jungle we go. The Brazil-Bolivia Amazon fires are ablaze. There’s chatter about the lack of aid from the government and the corrupt nature of drug trafficking. We want what we want, when we want it. Even spiritual experiences are being sold as commodities now. We are cut off a piece of vine that is thicker than some trees. It’s first aroma is peppermint. White cat’s claw. I’ve heard of it before and studied it in school. You’ll see it being marketed on crazy cancer websites and in witches brews from far regions of the world. The miracle cures always seem to come from the Amazon. With its vast biodiversity I can’t say I’m unsold on the idea. But maybe it’s something more than that. The sword will bring glory and success but you just might have to be the right person to pull it from the stone. There just might be something about the delivery.

[ our herbal journal ]

in Cusco at 12,000ft elevation and it just doesn’t seem possible for the next week. Guinea pigs roasted on sticks are being waved on street corners as we make our way to the San Pedro market. A cacophony of colors, smells, and sounds are packed tightly into rows of vendors. This isle houses cheese. That one is for fruit and bread. Somewhere in between the trinkets section and dried herbs is the shamanic prepackaged goods, where you can buy your complete set of offerings in one bundle. They have various forms of aqua flora (flower water) used for cleansing and grounding. The concept is one we have in western herbalism, often seen with hydrosols and incense. I recognized the bottle the next day when at the crack of dawn we were hiking up to the highest point on Earth I’ve ever been. Rainbow Mountain seemed like forever away and it obviously showed on my face and demeanor. The hiking guide; fit, awake, and chatty pulled out the bottle and offered me a sniff. “It helps with altitude sickness”. He doused my hands and I inhaled, burning most of my nostril hairs in the process. I don’t know about altitude, but it definitely did something. Just believe, I tell myself, angry at my skepticism, disheartened by my lack of understanding of all the wealth of herbal wisdom housed within these jungles. Will I ever truly understand? Will I ever truly experience? -Kristen

Good Belly

Sick Ninja

Upset bellies and tummy aches, Good Belly is for the occasional indigestion, difficulty with foods, and stress bellies. Delicious and effective, our blend of chamomile, fennel, ginger, cardamom, and peppermint is a hit for anyone in the family. Take straight out of the bottle or add to tea, water, or seltzer. The spice flavor (cardamom and ginger) works as a bitter to support gastric secretion. Fennel helps to ease gas and indigestion, commonly called a carminitive in the herbal world. Peppermint works similarly and can also reduce stress and tension that sometimes comes with. Take a couple drops after meals, or before for things tough to digest. Ingredients: chamomile, fennel, ginger, cardamom, and peppermint 10-20 drops as needed 1oz 14.50, 2oz 24.50

Colds, flus, and the icky sicky. Our Sick Ninja is the first in our Fern & Fiddle glycerite line and still one of our most popular. Meant for short term prevention (like when kiddos are returning to school after summer) or for when stuck with the crud. With a tasty melody of elderberry, echinacea, and anise, this formula is simple, effective, and pure. Elderberry has long been used as a respiratory cold/ flu aid, delicious and jammy most kids are willing participants in its use. Echinacea or coneflower, helps to support white blood cell function leading to a gentle kick towards bacteria and viruses. Anise helps the medicine go down, and with just a hint this also helps with digestibility and compliance. Ingredients: elderberry, echinacea, and anise 10-20 drops per day for prevention 1-2 dropper fulls 2-3x per day for acutes 1oz 14.50, 2oz 24.50

Calm Cool

Ear Aches

Active brains and runaway trains. Calm Cool is for rough times, anxious moments, and overactive brains. Delicious and effective, our glycerite line is a hit for anyone in the family. Lemon balm is a breath of fresh air when moments get tough; being a member of the mint family it literally helps open the airways but has also traditionally been used to calm the nerves. Catnip and peppermint (also in the mint family) help to ease the tension on the physical as well as mental plane. Ginkgo and gotu-kola help circulate oxygen to the brain and reminds us that a strong heart-brain connection helps to regulate our emotional state. This can be used to help the anxious, hyperactive, and scattered; to the overwhelmed and frazzled. We often recommend Calm Cool to the wired brain at night that has a difficult time turning off for bed. Ingredients: lemon balm, catnip, gingko, gotu kola, and peppermint in glycerin. Take 1-2 dropperfuls as needed. 1oz 14.50, 2oz 24.50

COMING SOON Milk Maid - For mama and milk production

Itchy ears & recurrent infections, our mullein and garlic ear oil is a classic, tried and true blend for earaches; acute and chronic. Add a couple drops to each ear as needed. For better results warm up the bottle (without the dropper in it) beforehand to lukewarm temperature before use, and always apply to both ears. Mullein is more commonly referred to as a weed in our neck of the valley, but a useful one at that. We can still envision the herbal drawing of it now, ingrained into us by our beloved mentors. The root is for kidneys, it’s leaves for the lungs and its flowers for the ears. Garlic is a well-known antimicrobial herb, studied at nauseum, and another wonderful example of #eatyourherbs which can be brought to an even more comprehensive practice. The combo together, garlic and mullein, is a well researched and effective topical blend for the common ailment at hand. 1-3 drops into ear canal as needed 1oz 14.50

Nighty Night - For sleepless nights and calming Baby Blues - For family moods

Fern & Fiddle is our line for pregnancy, lactation, and kiddos. Alcohol free and formulated for taste and compliance, our glycerin line is a hit with everyone in the family. All dosages are intended for children aged 3-10. For adults and young adults, double the dose. Consult your physician before use and for children under 3 years old. None of our Fern & Fiddle line contains honey. www.saltcreekapothecary.com 21

SALT CREEK APOTHECARY

Synergy I felt synergy from the herbs long before I was taught how to formulate. Regardless, we are taught the traditional methods of pairing herbs to strengthen formulas and promote organ specificity. That is medicinal synergy. There is another form. I found nutrition and whole foods plant based ideology and my concept of herbalism expanded. They went from pills, to intention in amber bottles, to functional food items, adorning my salads whilst protecting my kidneys. This synergy incorporates flavors and colors, delighting the senses with purpose. Then there is the synergy of Gaia, coming from the beauty of living, breathing, reflections of life mirroring our ailments. The soil you walk on, where your food is grown, and the environment of your medicine is breathing and moving with the same energetic pulse. This is why it is so important to be conscientious of where these medicinals come from. You wouldn’t eat a tomato that was chemically laden and grown half way around the world out of season. So why would you with your herbs? Those decisions are perhaps even more imperative with medicinal herbs since they are concentrated and taken in daily doses. Did you know, every herb that is imported for manufacturing or distribution in the United States is irradiated? Did you know that most herbal compounders and manufacturers (supplement pills and

tinctures) use herbs grown internationally? Support local herbalism.

And lastly, all herbs used in the production of Salt Creek Apothecary products are thanked, composted and returned to the earth, nourishing the next seasons garden.

Sustainability Sustainability is a foundation for all Salt Creek Apothecary products. You will never see a product packaged in plastic or other petroleum products. Despite the higher cost of sustainable packaging, you will find lip butters packaged in recyclable tins or compostable paperboard tubes. Herbal extracts and elixirs are packaged in glass bottles, and soap are wrapped in paper. We never wildcraft endangered plants and always leave plenty of behind for birds and animals. We purchase herbs that cannot be locally grown or wildcrafted in large enough quantities. When purchasing herbs we prioritize those organically grown in the Pacific Northwest even if they cost a little more. Only sustainable essential oils will be used in topical aromatherapy serums and soaps. The huge demand for essential oils and the incredible amount of plant material needed to produce the tiniest amount of oil means many of my favorite oils are currently over harvested, endangered and rare. No palm-oil is used in the production of Salt Creek Apothecary soap. All products are free from petroleum

is a toasty warm-

ing blend of roasted dandelion root, roasted chicory root, and roasted carob. No-Joe is perfect as a nourishing coffee alternative any time of day whether you intend to wave goodbye to the coffee bean or not. The flavor is rich and delicious with bold and bitter flavor similar to coffee. Roasted dandelion root and roasted chicory root pair to create a tonic which supports the liver and detoxification, skin ailments, and is rich in vitamins and minerals including zinc, magnesium, and potassium. The roasted roots contain inulin, a pre-biotic soluble fiber that supports your digestive flora. Organic carob adds a subtle sweetness and complex flavor. Great alone, sweeten with molasses or honey, or add a bit of cream or milk of your choice. A take on the original PHY609 formula being researched by Stanford University for its immune properties when coupled with traditional chemotherapy, our PHY509 blend consists of local organic jujubes, local organic scutellaria, organic licorice root, and organic white peony. This tisane is naturally sweet with a hefty dose of licorice and the fun addition of locally grown jujubes.

If you’ve never tried one, pick a half out and give it a chew. It reminds us of freeze dried marshmallows. The skullcap is a favorite of ours for many reasons, as you’ll see it in our Stress Tonic for a similar action of calming the nerves while also adding a cooling nature. White peony has been used traditionally for immune purposes, normally anchored in female reproductive organs but is surely helpful for the feminine in us all. As mentioned before, this formula is being researched for various immune aides, and is taken from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulations. Not so shocking that our ancestors hold wisdom even for today’s day and age. Ingredients: jujubes, skullcap, licorice root, white peony

This is one of our most popular blends, and back by demand. We used to produce this tea just in winter but now have added it to our core line. If you like spicy full bodied chai’s this one if for you. As one of the prettiest blends with its vibrant rose petals against the earthy roots, it’s also worth displaying as a gift or in your kitchen. Use 1 tablespoon in 8 oz water or your favorite type of milk. Simmer for 15 minutes. For extra spice let steep for 1 hour. I normally make a large batch and then turn it into iced chai the next morning. Sweeten with honey, maple syrup, or Turmeric and Black Pepper Beehive for an extra pizazz. Ingredients: organic rooibos, organic cardamom, organic ginger, organic roasted dandelion root, organic clove, organic true cinnamon, organic star anise, organic black peppercorn, organic astragalus, organic rose petals, organic eleuthero, and organic lavender.

THE ART OF

No-Joe

Tisane

Herbal infusions are one of the first ways we as consumers encounter herbalism. Many mistakenly call them “teas” which doesn’t hurt our feelings by the way. The term “tea” refers to an herbal infusion specifically using the plant camellia sinensis. The way it is produced is how you get differences in variation (like green, white, and black). Tisanes on the other hand, refer to all the other herbal infusions that don’t use camellia sinensis. This also means that they are normally caffeine free (but not always). Herbal teas are one of the greatest ways to not only take your medicine, but learn the act and art of self care. We hope you enjoy our tisanes as much as we do.

Breathe is an herbal cold and flu rem-

edy of Yarrow, Hyssop, Elderflower, and Mint. Yarrow and Elderflower are both diaphoretic, meaning they encourage sweating and will help break a fever. Yarrow is astringent and drying which can greatly help those with a sinus infection, wet cough, or even sinus allergies. Yarrow helps to dry up and move excess mucus out of the respiratory system while reducing inflammation in sensitive mucous membranes. Similarly, Elderflower is anti-inflammatory, astringent, and decongestant. Elderflower acts as a gentle nervine which can help ease tension and anxiety. Peppermint and Spearmint are gently decongesting, can help reduce a headache associated with sinus pressure and make this tisane taste great. If you feel a head cold coming on this is a great tisane to turn to. But you don’t have to be sick to enjoy this tea, its wonderful anytime. We use medicinal dosing in our teas, which means they are strong. Imbibing for enjoyment, you of course are welcome to play around with strength and potency. We recommend 2tsp per cup of hot water and to let it steep at minimum for 60 seconds. You will want to cover your tea while steeping to make sure you get all the volatile oils from the mint family. The longer this tea sits in hot water the more bitter it will get, which is great for digestion, and some prefer that taste. If you don’t care for the bitterness, we recommend straining after 1-2 minutes of steeping for maximum respiratory aide.

Chill Out

is a delicious and calming blend of locally grown organic tulsi tea (holy basil), organic catnip, and organic lavender blossoms to put the racing mind at ease. The act of drinking tea itself is part of the stress treatment plan. Sit down, sip up, breathe and rest. Catnip is a gentle calming herb in the mint family with subtle notes and flavors worth exploring (it’s not just for cats despite popular belief!). While catnip is exciting to your feline, it will be soothing to you. Tulsi is an adaptogen which helps your body deal with stress and cortisol management and is one of our favorite tea backbones for its gentle yet robust flavors. Lavender is a quintessential anxiety herb, known well to those in the essential oil world for diffusing next to your bed for relief, it’s internal workings beyond its volatile oils include helping digestion as a mild bitter. If you need an extra kicker, we recom-

mend our Stress Tonic to make it a daily duo. Even if you are not a stress monkey, this tea is one of our all time favorites for it’s flavor profile; as it will surely be enjoyable to the common tea connoisseur. Ingredients: Organic Catnip, Organic Lavender, Organic Tulsi.

Love is a beautiful tea that has a wonder-

ful aroma which fills your heart and has been our ‘go-to’ after work beverage. The backbone of damiana lifts your spirits and encourages a sense of well-being, as a tonic for the nervous system helping calm anxiety and lift mild depression. As a bonus, Damiana has been known through history as an aphrodisiac (for both men and women) and has been reported to enhance fertility, regulate menstruation and ease symptoms of PMS. Rose gives this tisane the most amazing flavor and aroma, filling our hearts with love. Time with this blend promotes calming, strengthens the heart, and can help us clearly see (and set) healthy boundaries. Peppermint is both calming and stimulating to the nervous system. Peppermint can ease anxiety and tension, yet at the same time makes a great afternoon ‘pick-me-up’, by increasing mental clarity, aiding concentration. This is a wonderful tisane to share with friends and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Ingredients: Damiana, rose buds and petals, peppermint.

The

Tisane does the trick

when sometimes you just need to get things moved out. One cup in the evening normally promotes healthy bowel movements in the morning. Start small with 1tsp decocted in 1 cup boiling water. With a mild chai flavor this tea is enjoyable and effective. Make sure to drink plenty of water and move your body, as both elements are necessary to combat constipation. Ingredients: organic senna leaf, organic cascara bark, organic true cinnamon, organic ginger, organic cardamom.

In Alaska, friends will tell you to lay down in a patch of wild yarrow to keep away the mosquitos (or rub yarrow on your skin and clothing). Native People in the Pacific Northwest traditionally hung yarrow in longhouses to repel insects and the tea was sprayed around salmon during processing to repel flies.

Wild harvested yarrow blossoms and leaves were infused in apricot kernel oil and are easily absorbed by the skin without leaving a greasy or oily feeling. Insect repelling essential oils of Catnip, Lemon Eucalyptus, Geranium, and Peppermint were added to the infused oil for additional insect repelling power. As an oil-based insect repellent, yarrow infused Bug-Be-Gone should be applied directly to your skin (do not apply to clothing or it may leave oil stains). Like many products containing essential oils, Bug-Be-Gone topical oil is not recommended for use on children younger than 5 years old. Always test a small amount on skin for sensitivity prior to use. Yarrow infused bug-be-gone sprays in a stream (rather than diffuse spray) and should be rubbed in the skin. 2.7oz 19.50 Calendula Butter(s) Our Calendula Butters are silky smooth and the perfect medium weight lotion for seasonal skin changes to light and lovely warmer month hydration. The lymphatic system is often ignored and under treated. It is best thought of as the super highways of elimination for the body. Castor oil is a wonderful treatment to increase this system’s effectiveness. Traditionally used as a castor oil “press” or “pack”; smoother this viscous oil all over the desired area (liver is common), cover with an old towel/tee-shirt, and then apply heat for 2030 minutes minimum. You can also do this for aching joints to decrease inflammation, over the low abdomen for menstrual cramps, and on the low back for common complaints. This castor oil is medicinal grade, but we do not recommend internal use unless directed by a physician.
