ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 EDITION
Dear Salt Lake Chamber Members, This year the Salt Lake Chamber is celebrating its 130 year anniversary! As an organization older than the state of Utah, the Salt Lake Chamber has stood as the voice of business since 1887. Since our inception, the Chamber has been a key driver in efforts to grow the economy and enhance the quality of life in all of Utah. We have shown what’s possible when the business community engages, collaborates, and invests in making Utah the best state to live, work, learn, and play. The spirit of collaboration between the business community, the Governor and our Legislature is as strong as ever. By working hand-in-hand, we saw the successful passage of many of our 2017 key priorities, including regulation reform, education funding and efforts to improve Utah’s air quality. The Chamber also partnered with initiatives like Talent Ready Utah and the 25k Jobs Tour in an effort to develop Utah’s future workforce. The Salt Lake Chamber continues to be a gathering place for business leaders and the community at large. Through our programs, and those of our partners, the Chamber has directly engaged more than 400,000 members and business professionals. The Chamber’s 130th Gala Celebration was a huge success with more than 1,500 people in attendance. During the event, past chairs of the Chamber Board of Governors honored Chamber President and CEO Lane Beattie with the 38th Giant in Our City Award. As a member of the Chamber you have an incredible opportunity to get involved, be part of the conversation, and help create the direction of Utah’s future. Through the Chamber you can engage, lead and help sustain Utah’s reputation as the best state for business. We invite you to review our 2016-2017 Annual Report, which outlines our policy work, events, and accomplishments as well as highlights our successes in business and community leadership. We hope this inspires you to become more involved in the coming year. We greatly appreciate your support as a member. If you are not yet a member, this is a great time for you to join us. Sincerely,
Lane Beattie Keith McMullin Wilford Clyde President & CEO 2016-2017 Board Chair 2016-2017 Board Vice Chair

130TH ANNIVERSARY GALA CELEBRATION An organization is only as strong as the people it serves. Thanks to the business community, the Salt Lake Chamber has remained Utah’s “voice of business” for 130 years. To help commemorate this momentous occasion, Utah’s business and community leaders gathered at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater for the Chamber’s 130th Gala Celebration. During the event, past chairs of the Chamber Board of Governors honored Chamber President and CEO Lane Beattie with the 38th Giant in Our City Award. Since Beattie took the helm as president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber in 2003, he has transformed the 130-year-old statewide institution into a powerhouse of influence that stands for all Utah business. With this stewardship, the Chamber has embraced a new era of business and policy leadership by blending the traditional business chamber with powerful, top-notch business advocacy.
“I appreciate Lane Beattie’s friendship and leadership. The Chamber has been an integral part in helping the Utah story be told, and to have the success we’ve had as the best performing economy in all of America today; upward mobility, best place for business, largest growing middle class, great tributes coming in about Utah because of the efforts of Lane Beattie and the Salt Lake Chamber.” – Governor Gary Herbert

SINCE
VOICE OF BUSINESS BURYING HISTORY During the Chamber’s Board Retreat on June 13, 2017, the Chamber’s new time capsule was placed back into the cornerstone of the Commercial Club Building. The new time capsule, like the original, was handcrafted out of Kennecott copper and was filled with items intended to preserve the Chamber’s history. “When the first time capsule was placed in 1909, the Commercial Club Building was heralded as a sign of community progress and a show of strength for the Beehive State’s burgeoning business community. Now here we are, 108 years later, and Utah is known for being the best state for business and one of the top economies in the country. We are proud of the Salt Lake Chamber’s role in Utah’s business and economic success, and we’re excited to preserve some of our history for future generations.” - Lane Beattie, President & CEO, Salt Lake Chamber
On July 5, 1909, members of the Commercial Club placed a time capsule behind the cornerstone of the Commercial Club Building at 32 Exchange Place. In preparation of the Salt Lake Chamber’s 130th Anniversary Celebration, the original time capsule was removed from its hiding place with the help of Abstract Masonry Restoration. Inside the 108-year-old copper box was a well preserved Holy Bible, a 1909 Commercial Club Year Book, a typewritten copy of the address given at the cornerstone laying, business cards from the contractors who helped construct the building, and a copy of the Commercial Club’s 1909 complaint against the railroad companies.
The 2087 Time Capsule • Photographs • Copies of the Chamber’s history book and 2017 Public Policy Guide • Predictions for the future • Several Chamber coins

• Newspaper clippings • Holy Bible • TRAX pass • Business card from original 1909 time capsule

WE CHAMPION GOOD COMPANIES = BETTER COMMUNITY Utah businesses play an important role in making our community a better place. The Salt Lake Chamber’s corporate citizenship and responsibility programs provide a unique way to engage businesses in policy issues that matter to their company and the community. With a goal to empower companies to engage their employees in corporate citizenship and responsibility programs that enhance our community, the Chamber’s policy-based corporate responsibility programming includes topics such as sustainability, quality of life, water conservation, air quality and workforce development, among others. Many Utah companies go above and beyond when it comes to corporate citizenship, so the Chamber places special emphasis on championing and recognizing business success in these areas by sharing their stories and best practices with the business community and general public.

“As a company we are always looking to improve our products and services, to better serve our customers, and to leave a lasting impact on the communities where we live and work. The facts are clear— companies who deeply commit to corporate social responsibility (CSR) will see financial, customer and team member impacts. At Dell EMC we’re committed to creating a Legacy of Good which includes putting our technology and expertise to work where it can do the most good for people and for the planet. The environmental goals in this plan include reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% before 2020 as well as developing and maintaining sustainability initiatives in our workplace. We’re doing our part in Utah to help reach these goals and improve Utah’s air quality at the same time; the Clean Air Champions program has been a great vehicle for our ongoing efforts.” – Vance Checketts, General Manager and Vice President, Dell EMC
Clean Air Champions are business leaders in our community that show dedication to our state’s well-being and benefit from bottom line savings, enhanced employee health and morale and recognition from business community peers by implementing clean air strategies. This year, the Chamber refreshed its Clean Air Champions program and Inversion Mitigation Initiative to be a targeted, twelve-week (January-March) initiative focused on connecting businesses to resources and encouraging employee engagement in making a difference for Utah’s air quality.

“The Salt Lake Chamber’s Water Champions program has been a great way to share Orbit’s story with the business community. Water conservation has always been a priority for Orbit, not only in the innovative products we provide for customers, but also through empowering our employees to be water wise. We estimate that millions of gallons have been saved through our outreach efforts alone, and our goal is to push well beyond that and save billions of gallons by simply changing watering behavior through promoting smart irrigation products and easy-to-understand tools.” – KC Ericksen, CEO, Orbit Irrigation
Prosperity 2020 is the largest business-led movement ever assembled in Utah to advance educational investment and innovation. The partnership includes 21 chambers of commerce across the state. The vision of Prosperity 2020 is to work collaboratively to make education in Utah top 10 in the nation, leading to prosperity and a bright future for Utah.

The Chamber’s Water Champions program seeks to remove barriers to business water conservation and optimization efforts through education, outreach and recognition. We understand that many businesses already do a lot to conserve water, so we want to ensure their efforts do not go unnoticed. Water Champions are businesses that recognize the crucial role water plays in the continued economic vitality of the state by focusing on water optimization and/or utilizing best water management practices.

130TH GALA CELEBRATION April 28, 2017 | The George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater Utah’s business and community leaders gathered at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater to celebrate the Chamber’s 130th Anniversary. Attendees traveled through time visiting several different “Decade Parties” around the theater’s lobbies. From the roaring 20s, the nifty 50s, to the soulful 70s and many more. Then attendees were treated to a “Celebration of Business” in the Delta Performance Hall with special guests, Utah’s own GENTRI; Tony Award-winning, Grammy Award-nominated Lisa Hopkins Seegmiller; and country music icon Lee Greenwood. It was a night we won’t soon forget!
INTERNATIONAL TRIP TO CUBA May 3-10, 2017 The Chamber and World Trade Center Utah traveled to Cuba with local business and civic leaders. Attendees explored Cuba’s history learning about the challenges and opportunities with doing business in Cuba. On the trip, they visited the Plaza de la Revolución (pictured), the center of Cuban political life and Havana’s largest plaza.
