Dear Members, What a year it has been! Thanks to dedicated business leaders like you, the Salt Lake Chamber has stood as the voice of business, supported our members’ success and championed community prosperity for over 132 years.

In addition to the year’s legislative achievements, the Chamber continued its long-standing tradition of convening business and community leaders to recognize those making a difference for our state, providing professional development training and facilitating networking opportunities. Highlights for this year’s programs and events include recognizing the 56 graduates of the Leadership Utah Class of 2019, hosting the Education & Workforce Forum with all five of our women college and university presidents, and honoring Cindy Crane as the 2018 ATHENA and Fred Lampropoulos as the 40th Giant in our City. Working with our strategic partners, the Downtown Alliance, Women’s Leadership Institute (WLI), World Trade Center Utah (WTC Utah) and Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, as well as our economic partners, EDCUtah and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, the efforts of “Team Utah” have helped to fortify our state as one of the strongest economies in the nation. Our 2018-2019 Annual Report features community and business leadership and outlines many of the Chamber’s accomplishments. We hope this report inspires you to become even more involved with the Chamber during the upcoming year. Thank you for making our success possible. Sincerely,

Derek B. Miller President and CEO

Steve Starks 2018-2019 Board Chair

Linda Wardell 2018-2019 Board Vice Chair

*This report reflects information from August 2018 to July 2019.

The Salt Lake Chamber was successful in advancing pro-business policies during the 2019 Legislative Session. We’ve made significant strides to enhance the funding necessary to build a talented workforce, bring computer science to every classroom and address our housing affordability crisis. We have worked closely with our members and the legislature to ensure Utah’s business perspective and responsible tax policies guide the discussion on restructuring the state’s tax code.

CONNECTING BUSINESS AND HIGHER EDUCATION

It’s an extraordinar y time in Utah’s higher education community. More than half of our traditional colleges and universities are under new leadership, with five of the nine higher education institutions led by women. The oppor tunity has never been greater for us as a business community to engage with these leaders and collaborate with our institutions of higher learning to have a meaningful impact on educating and training Utah’s future workforce.

The tempting thing is to surround yourself with people who are just like you. That doesn’t challenge you. As leaders we need to surround ourselves with people who are different than us. It will make us better and reflect the community we live in. - President Ruth Watkins, University of Utah

BEST PRACTICES FROM BUSINESS LEADERS

In 2019, the Salt Lake Chamber created a new podcast called CEO Success Stories. In ever y episode Derek Miller, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber and Downtown Alliance, sits down with a top CEO from across the state to hear from them their leadership philosophy, best practices and lessons learned.

ENGAGING THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS

The Salt Lake Chamber is a gathering place for business leaders and the community, but it is also a place to foster impor tant skills and relationships. To that end, the Chamber created the HIVE, an initiative focused on building the next generation of impactful business and community leaders.

WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHERS? I would say work hard, as my father told me. I would say set high standards, first and foremost for yourself. I believe in walking the talk. I believe you shouldn’t expect other people to step up and do things that you wouldn’t be willing to do yourself, so be the example. Be willing to raise your hand for oppor tunities outside your comfor t zone. - Cindy Crane, formerly CEO, Rocky Mountain Power

DISCUSSING THE CHAMBER’S KEY FEDERAL PRIORITIES

The Salt Lake Chamber held its Candidate Forum on October 16, 2018 with members of the Chamber ’s Board of Governors and other invited guests. Attendees had an oppor tunity to hear from Governor Mitt Romney, Mayor Ben McAdams, Councilwoman Jenny Wilson, and Congresswoman Mia Love about issues impor tant to Utah’s business community. The forum also allowed business leaders to hear th e Chamber ’s key federal priorities, which include trade, immigration, health and entitlement reform, infrastructure, medical cannabis, energy production and regulation reform.

BEST PRACTICES TO CLOSING THE GENDER WAGE GAP

The Salt Lake Chamber and the Women’s Leadership Institute created a guidebook titled, “Best Practices Guide for Closing the Gender Wage Gap.” This guidebook is full of policies, programs and actions companies can use to close the gender wage gap. We gathered research-based practices and policies and collected feedback and insight from Utah business leaders to create a toolkit that companies can star t implementing today.

We believe members of Utah’s business community are willing and able to n ot only take the necessar y steps to ensure the work Utah women per form is valued fairly, but also prove that we can be leaders in creating solutions that result in an equitable pay environment. - Pat Jones, CEO, Women’s Leadership Insititute

UTAH ECONOMIC OUTLOOK & PUBLIC POLICY SUMMIT

As Utah’s business leader, the Salt Lake Chamber provides the Utah Economic Outlook & Public Policy Summit to focus on the key issues impacting our economy and what we as a business community can do to keep it moving for ward. The 2019 keynote address was given by Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian.

CLEAR THE AIR CHALLENGE

While Utah’s superb business climate is unquestionably a top reason businesses move here, our quality of life remains a major selection factor for both corporations and people looking to relocate. One factor that can negatively affect our quality of life is poor air quality. That’s why, for the last 10 years, the Salt Lake Chamber has par tnered with TravelWise and UCAIR to host the Clear the Air Challenge—a month-long competition designed to encourage Utahns to reduce their vehicle emissions by choosing alternatives to driving alone. Collectively, this year ’s par ticipants eliminated:

ADVANCING COMMERCIAL TIES BETWEEN UTAH AND ISRAEL

The Salt Lake Chamber and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to join forces on a program promoting stronger commercial ties between Utah and Israel, par ticularly in the water sector where there are oppor tunities, challenges and a need for cooperation on both sides.

REAFFIRMING THE UTAH COMPACT

Today our immigration system is still in need of significant reform, and politics continue to overshadow impor tant policy discussions. Almost a decade removed from its introduction, the principles laid out in The Utah Compact are as critical to this discussion now as they were then. On March 21, 2019, leaders from many of the same organizations that draf ted The Utah Compact in 2010, gathered again to reaffirm their suppor t for the principles outlined in the document and called on a new generation of Utahns to take up the mantle of leadership in advancing commonsense, compassionate immigration reform.

Utah is best ser ved by a free-market philosophy that maximizes individual freedom and oppor tunity. We acknowledge the economic role immigrants play as workers and taxpayers. Utah’s immigration policies must reaffirm our global reputation as a welcoming and business-friendly state. - Miles Hansen, president & CEO, World Trade Center Utah

Immigration is a federal policy issue between the U.S. government and other countries—not Utah and other countries. We urge Utah’s congressional delegation, and others, to lead effor ts to strengthen federal laws and protect our national borders. We urge state leaders to adopt reasonable policies addressing immigrants in Utah. - Tim Wheelwright, chair, Immigration Task Force

FURTHERING COMPUTER SCIENCE IN UTAH SCHOOLS

Utah’s tech industr y is booming. We’re leading the countr y in technology-based economic development and our tech industr y continues to grow faster than any other state in the nation. In order to ensure we have the workforce to sustain this growth, Utah’s business community is championing effor ts to ensure all students have access to computer science classes. Computing classes not only teach students about technology, but also encourage children to think critically, develop problemsolving skills, and prepare our next generation of learners, leaders, problem solvers and innovators to make contributions to our world. During a press conference on March 5, 2019, the Chamber along with some of Utah’s major employers reinforced its suppor t for H.B. 227, Utah Computer Science Grant Act.

We have a strong network of universities here in Utah, but our nation and our state can and should do more to provide youth greater access to computer science training, as early as elementar y school, and cer tainly during their middle and high school years. - Dan Gelston, president of broadband communications sector, L3 Technologies

SIGNING ON TO SUPPORT THE USMCA

The Salt Lake Chamber joined more than 200 companies, leading business, trade organizations and associations representing farmers and ranchers, manufacturers, ser vice providers, and technology companies calling for congressional approval of the United States-Mexico - Canada Agreement.

UTAH COMMUNITY BUILDERS PRIORITIES

The Utah Commu nity Builders Foundation, the Chamber ’s non-profit organization focused on addressing critical social and community issues through strategic par tnerships, announced its project priorities on July 15, 2019. Priorities include addressing intergenerational pover ty, behavioral health , immigration and child care.

Business knows how to get things done. We want to know how best we can contribute and have a real impact on the social fabric of our community. Through its advisor y board and other par ticipants, the Foundation represents some of the best that Utah has to offer, and it is ready to lead out on these issues. - Clark Ivor y, CEO of Ivor y Homes and co -chair of the Utah Community Builders Advisor y Board

UTAH BUSINESS PAC

Salt Lake Chamber has earned the wellresp ected reputation as an effective advocate of Utah’s business community. It’s newly created Utah Business PAC will allow Utah business leaders to continue to invest in Utah’s future by providing financial suppor t to candidates running for city, county and statewide offices who recognize the impor tance of economic and community prosperity and champion business success.

RELEASE OF THE TAX REFORM WHITE PAPER

Following the last legislative session and the legislature’s effor ts to restructure Utah’s Tax Code, the Chamber held eight industr y-specific working groups to listen to business leaders, gather input and consider ideas and solutions for tax restructuring. Three hundred business leaders par ticipated in these groups, resulting in a Chamber white paper on tax reform released on August 22, 2019. The three overarching recommendations in the white paper include, foremost, that the purpose of any change to the current tax code must be to continue the state’s economic prosperity. Second, adherence to the principles wisely put in place decades ago: simplicity, efficiency, flexibility, transparency and stability. Third, avoiding taxation of ser vices that result in tax pyramiding (double taxation or a tax on a tax) and excluding business to business inputs.

EMPOWERING OUR MEMBERS THROUGH INFORMATION

As Utah’s business leader, providing the business community key information on Utah’s economy is central to our mission. Given the success of the Chamber ’s CEOutlook , we expanded the concept to include the Utah Outlook —a new and authoritativ e state-wide poll measuring Utahns’ sentiments on issues relevant to us and our communities. By empowering our members through information, we will continue to fulfill our mission to amplif y the voice of business, promote success, and champion community prosperity.
