President’s Message Dear Friends and Fellow Alumni, It is my pleasure to welcome you to Alumni Weekend 2016. The true intent of this celebration is to reacquaint you with your alma mater, as well as to reunite individuals with a shared experience and pay tribute to their personal journeys, their challenges and their successes, while providing an opportunity to reflect on how far we all have come. If you were able to take part in the daytime activities I hope your visit brought back fond thoughts of your time with us. Whether you studied at our Elkins Park or East Oak Lane campus, visited previously, or visited the campus for the first time today, I am confident you will leave this weekend with wonderful memories of good times spent with old and new friends. As you join us in celebration of what we’ve all accomplished in the past, I want to encourage you to look to the future and stay involved and engaged. I can tell you there is much to be excited about – including a much needed updating and renovation to our clinical skills lab and learning resource center (formerly the library). Thanks to the progressive vision of my predecessors, our evolution has positively placed us in a position of strength, allowing us to train the healthcare providers of tomorrow. Leading health and wellness with our tradition of innovation, activism and professional pride, our students (from multiple disciplines) are better together – and Salus is better with you. Today, through interprofessional educational experiences, Salus students are exposed to integrated programs where exploration and collaboration are driving holistic healthcare. It is truly an exciting time for us and I urge you to become a part of it. The path in front of us will include many challenges for which we will need your support. Our programs face stiff competition as well as the challenge of keeping tuition down while we continue to provide quality programs for our students. I digress. For tonight, the focus is not on the hurdles yet to come. Tonight is to celebrate and reconnect with your classmates and faculty – and make some new friends. When you leave here and return to your busy schedules, I hope you stay connected. Read your emails from Salus to keep up with what we are doing and, when we call for your support, please give our request serious consideration. Congratulations to this year’s Alumni Association Awardees and those celebrating milestone graduation anniversaries. Thank you all for joining us this weekend and stay in touch. Sincerely,
Michael H. Mittelman, OD ’80, MPH, FAAO, FACHE 2

Dear Alumni and Friends of Salus University, Thank you for joining us for Alumni Weekend! We would like to thank you all for your continued support of the University and your involvement with student activities. Our students love to hear from you and learn from your experiences in practice. You all have left very big shoes to fill! Our hope is that you will stay involved in student activities on campus. Your support, whether by speaking at events for the various student organizations or being a positive contact for prospective students in your area is appreciated and welcomed wholeheartedly. Salus Student Council and student organizations are still very busy. Many optometry students will be heading to Vision Expo, COVD, and AOA CAC PAC in a few weeks. Audiology students have the AudiologyNOW! conference in Phoenix, AZ this month as well. If you see our students at these events, please say hello and help with any questions that they may have. The Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) is hosting a Salus Team for the Muckfest Mud Run Philly for the second year running. This is a huge student event that raises awareness and funding for multiple sclerosis. Our Physician Assistant students are looking forward to the American Academy of Physician Assistant conference in May. The Blindness and Low Vision Studies (BLVS) program as well as our other off-campus programs such as the Master of Public Health degree program are continuing to grow and excel. BLVS students will soon be on campus, as they arrive for classes in June. We are very proud to have such a wide variety of health practitioners involved at Salus. In August we welcomed the first-ever class of Speech Language Pathology (SLP) students. They have fallen right into place within the Salus community and we couldn’t be happier to have them on campus. In addition to being active in Student Council, our SLP students have already created a Salus Chapter of the North Suburban Speech and Language Association. Student Council itself is always busy hosting student events, with the Salus Soirée taking place next weekend. This is a chance for our students from all programs to get dressed up and have a night out in Philadelphia together. Events like this really encourage interdisciplinary relationships between the programs and students – and remind us that there is life outside of school! We hope you enjoy your time back on campus and if you have any questions, please ask the Student Council members or email scouncil@salus.edu.
With Salus Pride, The Student Council Executive Board Elizabeth Nace, Executive President Roxanne Chalifoux, Executive Secretary Pelashia Rhodes, SMOTBOT Rachel Centafont, Executive Assistant

Audiology Alumna of the Year Award Kathy A. Foltner, AuD ‘03 “I am honored and humbled to have been chosen as the 2016 Audiology Alumna of the Year from such an elite and prestigious group of audiologists and colleagues. I experienced Salus University Osborne College of Audiology both as a student and adjunct professor. This not only improved my skills as an audiologist, but also provided the opportunity for me to give back, mentor, and academically challenge over 1000 audiologists, hopefully positively impacting their careers as Doctors of Audiology. I am forever grateful for the opportunities Salus has provided.” When George Osborne was recruiting students for the PCO School of Audiology online AuD program, particularly in the early years of the program, he sought to recruit the best and the brightest in the profession personally calling each one. Dr. Foltner was one such recruit. As anyone who worked with Dr. Osborne knew, he had long-range goals for the audiology program. Once Kathy Foltner the experienced private practitioner, had earned her AuD degree in 2003, George Osborne recruited Dr. Foltner to join the faculty in 2004 and teach the Basic Business Skills course, which she did for over six years. Dr. Foltner has had a versatile career, serving as a clinician, private practice owner, business executive and manager, consultant and adjunct faculty member. She is the owner Foltner Consulting, LLC, providing business, marketing, operations management and practice valuation services for healthcare professionals and has served as CEO of AuDNet, Inc., a national hearing group purchasing organization. A member of the faculty at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Dr. Foltner teaches doctoral-level students audiology practice management and lectures about audiology career opportunities. An advocate for the autonomy of audiology, Dr. Foltner has presented numerous lectures and authored hundreds of professional articles, chapters and a book entitled, Success is a Decision of the Mind. She has been a member of the Academy of Doctors of Audiology for 36 years, and has served as treasurer. As a member of the American Academy of Audiology, she served as chair for the practice compliance committee and recently received the organization’s Presidential Award for her significant contributions to the Academy and the profession. In recognition of her successful career and contributions to the autonomy of the profession, the Alumni Association is honored to present Dr. Foltner with this award.

Albert Fitch Memorial Alumna of the Year Award Diane T. Adamczyk, OD ‘85, FAAO “The Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), now a part of Salus University, has a longstanding reputation of providing excellence in optometric education and developing outstanding healthcare providers. This dates back to the founding principles and foresight of Dr. Albert Fitch, nearly a century ago. The drive for excellence and the aspiration to advance the profession are the core principles instilled in all who have been educated here. As I, and all those from this family journey through our professional careers, all of our accomplishments and good works done are because of what PCO has given us. I am proud to be a member of this family and grateful for the foundation it provided and the principles it has taught me. PCO – you are the heart of who I am professionally. Thank you.“ This August will mark Dr. Adamczyk’s thirtieth year at State University of New York College of Optometry (SUNY), where she is a professor. Currently the director of SUNY residency education, she is also a diplomate of the American Board of Optometry, a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the American Optometric Association, New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians and New York Optometric Association. A true academic and professional leader, Dr. Adamczyk co-authored the textbook Primary Eyecare In Systemic Disease. Additionally she wrote several chapters of that book. She also wrote chapters in Clinical Ocular Pharmacology and has presented various papers, lectures and presentations. Dr. Adamczyk has chaired the American Optometric Association Evidence-Based Optometry Committee since its inception and recently published “Eye Care for the Patient with Diabetes Mellitus,” which earned the Outstanding Scientific Paper/Project Award from the American Public Health Association. “Comprehensive Adult Eye and Vision Care,” written under her direction, along with “Comprehensive Pediatric Eye and Vision Care,” are slated to be released this year. Dr. Adamczyk’s contributions to optometry have earned her the American Optometric Association President’s Award for Distinguished Service to Optometry, and the Scientific Achievement Award of the New Jersey Optometric Society of Physicians. She has contributed her time and talents to PCO as a program speaker and as a mentor to young optometric faculty through her leadership of ASCO’s new faculty development programming. This award is proudly bestowed upon Dr. Adamczyk in recognition of her valued contributions as an academic, educator, and mentor.
