FALL 2017

2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Through mud and muck, the Salus community comes together to raise money for MS research

FROM PRESIDENT MIT TELMAN Since the inception of Salus University’s founding college nearly 100 years ago, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), and now the University, has advanced integrated healthcare through innovative education, research and clinical services. As we approach PCO’s 100th anniversary in 2019, it is the perfect time to embrace and celebrate our legacy and tradition. As part of our 100-year celebration, Salus is embarking upon a multifaceted fundraising campaign that is seeking support for endowment, reinvesting in the University’s physical facilities, and funding for community-based programs. Today, financing a health professions degree is a significant challenge. Increasing the amount and availability of endowed scholarships will help ensure a Salus education is accessible to all qualified students, irrespective of their finances. To continue to deliver innovative educational programs, exceptional clinical training sequences and innovative learning strategies, the University must complement 21st century teaching with a cutting-edge learning environment. We have already begun this important initiative by investing in a state-of-the-art Optometric Clinical Procedures Lab and Virtual Reality Simulation Lab, and by transforming our library into a Learning Resource Center, but there is more to be done. Since 1919, community service has been part of our DNA and is a powerful teaching tool that is a necessary support to economically disadvantaged families, particularly in an uncertain healthcare environment. As we approach 2018, the 10th anniversary of the University, and 2019, the 100th anniversary of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, I hope you will join us as we celebrate our legacy of changing lives and the exciting vision we have for the future.

Michael H. Mittelman, OD ’80, MPH, FAAO, FACHE, RADM, USN P.S. Mark your calendar…the University will be celebrating with a centennial gala on Saturday, April 27, 2019. I hope to see you in Philadelphia then!

Salus University’s founding college, Pennsylvania State College of Optometry (later shortened to Pennsylvania College of Optometry), had its original campus on Spring Garden Street in the early 1900s.

ONE ARE THE DAYS of Helene Kaiser, OD ‘89, associate professor, bringing

her video camera to her Clinical Skills course to ensure she could capture her lecture for the students who missed class or simply wanted to review what they learned. Prior to July 2017, performing ophthalmoscopy on each other was the only way for students to practice retinal examinations. Today, technology reigns in the newly renovated Optometric Clinical Procedures Lab and adjacent Virtual Reality Simulation Lab. Sleek, gleaming display monitors and model patient heads are the first sight upon entering the Simulation Lab, while the Clinical Procedures Lab is most likely brimming with students testing and honing their examination techniques, using some of the most updated equipment available. Both labs and recent renovations are part of the University’s five-year Strategic Plan, which focuses on offering “facilities and technology that provide the appropriate infrastructure to promote state-of-the-art education and clinical programs” in addition to “investing in technologies, teaching methodologies, and evidence-based standards PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF FL ATIRON BUILDING COMPANY AND ALYSSA NUYEN ARCHITECTURAL RENDERING BY BWA ARCHITECHURE + PL ANNING

THE NEWLY RENOVATED OPTOMETRIC CLINICAL PROCEDURES L AB IS DESIGNED TO MAXIMIZE STUDENT LEARNING WITH 34 INDIVIDUAL WORK STATIONS AND STATE-OF-THE-ART OPTOMETRIC TRAINING EQUIPMENT.

“At Salus, we are committed to educating our students to the best of our abilities, which includes providing the latest technology and clinical training available,” said Michael H. Mittelman, OD ’80, MPH, FAAO, FACHE, University president. “Students are using state-ofthe-art equipment to help them perfect the clinical skills needed to be top-quality healthcare providers as they excel in their graduate studies and professional practices.” To accomplish these bold facilities upgrades, a committee was created to evaluate the specific needs of the new optometry labs and to assess what technology was required to keep pace with the rapidly changing scope of the profession. Rachel Brackley, OD ‘09, Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) assistant professor, served as the committee leader. She was joined by fellow PCO faculty members, Helene Kaiser, OD ‘89, Jamie Neiman, OD ‘01, Jean Marie Pagani, OD ‘87, Bhawan Minhas, OD, Holly Myers, OD ‘86, PCO dean Melissa Trego, OD ‘04, and the University’s chief of staff Brian Zuckerman. The goals for the space were two-fold: design an efficient and robust area for students practicing their clinical skills and ensure students have adequate access to the latest technology for training. After extensive research and

planning, which included traveling to other optometry schools to see their updated labs, meeting with architects and discussing equipment and layout needs, the project officially began in January 2017. The 8,000-square-foot renovation project was completed for the start of the academic year in May 2017.

OPTOMETRIC CLINICAL PROCEDURES L AB Featuring state-of-the-art ophthalmic equipment, the lab consists of 34 newly renovated practice bays — 32 for student use and two for instructional use. Each practice bay has the same style of slit lamp that the University’s clinical practice, The Eye Institute (TEI), has. Additionally, each has a teaching tube for instructors to view the students’ work. Video monitors are strategically mounted throughout the teaching lab. Video cameras can provide a live broadcast of an instructor’s demonstration and recording allows students to view each lesson at a later time if needed. Computers at each bay have electronic medical record software installed, making the transition to patient care and to clinical externships seamless. The lab’s layout also allows for collaborative instruction during certain lessons. One side of the

room may be working with Dr. Neiman on the proper technique to apply a pressure patch, while Dr. Brackley may be leading another group in a different clinical activity. There is also a small 10-bay auxiliary lab, located adjacent to the Clinical Procedures Lab, which serves as a practice space for students or a teaching lab for international students who are periodically on campus. After more than two years of planning and five months of construction, equipment delivery and assembly, Dr. Brackley is thrilled to see the renovation come to fruition. “We began this project in February of 2015, and it is very exciting to see the results of the committee’s time and effort,” she said. “It has been very rewarding to work with the students in the lab and see their enthusiasm about the new equipment and space.”

Feature VIRTUAL REALIT Y SIMUL ATION L AB The Virtual Reality Simulation Lab brings some of the latest technology to Salus using VRmagic software and equipment. Virtual reality technology is an innovative teaching tool that provides an opportunity for students to replicate the patient experience and refine their clinical skills in the absence of an actual patient. The VRmagic software produces a highly realistic, three-dimensional experience for students so they can accumulate more training time. There are eight stations for indirect ophthalmoscopy and four for direct ophthalmoscopy. Each station is equipped with a touch-screen monitor, a model patient head, and the tools needed for either direct or indirect ophthalmoscopy. The indirect ophthalmoscopy stations include a wearable headset with a display monitor. The lab also has the capability of having the simulator projected for group learning, further enhancing the students’ understanding of the cases and concepts being reviewed. The VRmagic software has various modules that users can select from to test a variety of skills such as properly using an indirect or direct ophthalmo-

scope, finding shapes on the retina, examining objects found on a retinal map, locating and identifying retinal pathologies, and using a case-study format to examine a model patient. If students want to practice their ability to identify certain retinal pathologies, they do not have to wait until they see a patient at TEI or simply view it in a textbook. They can select a particular module, adjust their ophthalmoscope, and view a virtual eye with diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration. The software also provides immediate feedback about whether or not the student is performing the examination correctly. The ability to view certain eye

conditions and practice skills repeatedly — without your partner’s eye becoming tired — allow certain techniques to be introduced earlier to students. Students are introduced to the virtual reality lab during their first year, with simulation training continuing throughout the second year. After having in-person patient experiences at TEI, the lab allows students in their third and fourth year to further enhance their understanding of disease processes. “We will introduce the skills of direct ophthalmoscopy and indirect ophthalmoscopy earlier in the curriculum,” Dr. Brackley said. “It will allow students to work on these skills at their own pace. These skills can be difficult to learn and our hope is that when students move to examining patients, they will master the techniques more quickly.” A hallmark of a Salus education is early and sustained clinical experiences. As a result, PCO students enter TEI during their first week on campus. The new renovation projects allow the University to continue its legacy of early, comprehensive clinical exposure, according to Dr. Kaiser. “Our students are in the clinic doing exams in the spring of their second year. Some schools wait until the fall of their third year for them to start performing exams,” she said. “Because we have a shortened timeline, we’re hoping that all this new technology will help cement the students’ clinical skills as they transition to seeing patients in the clinic.”

very year, during her lecture on narrative clinical reasoning, Andrea Tyszka, MS, OTR/L, SIPT, reads her class a story about a woman with

multiple sclerosis (MS). The narrative describes the woman’s persistent battle with chronic pain, periods of fluctuating and overwhelming fatigue, and the daily struggle to be a full-time mom, wife, occupational therapist and university faculty member. The story is about Tyszka and acts as a powerful tool for the Occupational Therapy (OT) associate professor. It shifts her students’ view of her as a teacher to a patient. It also was the impetus behind the idea for one of the University’s latest fundraising traditions. “A lot of people are very reluctant to disclose their MS diagnosis at work or to share it with their students, but I think it’s going to make them better OTs because they have a humanistic view of disability,” she said. “They see me as a person first and don’t see this label of disability as central to my being. My diagnosis is sort of on the periphery for them. I think that’s a good thing for them moving forward in their careers to be able to put their patients first as people and as patients secondary.” After the first time she shared

8

her narrative with her class, she was approached by one of her students. Eric Reuter, MSOT ’16, was greatly affected by her openness to discuss her condition. He opened up about a close family friend who also had MS and about an annual fundraising event for the National MS Society. From that initial conversation, a three-year tradition was born. Salus University has participated in MuckFest, a muddy obstacle course challenge, and raised more than $11,000 for MS research, all in support of Tyszka and those with MS.

“When she spoke to our class about her journey of living with MS, our hearts went out to her,” Reuter said. “The Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) board and I decided it was our responsibility to find a way to support her and others who were living with MS.” Prior to the first MuckFest event in 2015, Tyszka thought it was a nice gesture that her students wanted to form a team in her honor. She was anticipating just a handful of students sacrificing their gym clothes to race through the mud

together. But after more discussion with Reuter and SOTA, the idea grew dramatically. “There has to be a professional in each of our programs who will come in contact with someone with MS,” Tyszka recalls Reuter saying. “Why wouldn’t we do it with the whole school?” “The very first year we started the team, Eric and SOTA rallied students from all four colleges, and there were 71 people on the team,” she said. “Every year I’m shocked that they keep it going and the next group of students decides that it’ll be their fundraiser for the year. It’s very humbling they keep picking this up and moving it forward.” In 2015, MuckFest earned high honors at the student-organized Salus Awards Gala. The activity won the Social Event of the Year Award, which is presented to a student organization that has provided a remarkable opportunity for students to encourage involvement and to interact positively with their peers and the Salus community as a whole. SOTA individually also earned the Crozier Cup Student Organization of the Year Award, named for John J. Crozier, OD ’48, former

Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) vice president and dean of Student Affairs, who was noted for his dedication to instilling the virtues of professionalism, responsibility and pride in students. The following year, SOTA won the Spirit of Salus Community Service Award for the same event. Tyszka has made a lasting impression on her students both inside and outside of the classroom. It’s because of her diligent care for her students that they rally around her, not only during MuckFest, but every day. “During our first year of the OT program, we had Andrea for most of our classes and she is essentially our ‘OT mom,’” said Amanda Feinberg ’18OT, current SOTA president.

“She is always looking out for us. She has a great personality and can light up a room. She provides real-life examples, which makes her classes so much fun. Since she has done so much for us as students, we wanted to do something for her.” It’s tough to find the right words to express how humbling it is to have her students devote so much of their own time and energy into making MuckFest a success, Tyszka said reflecting upon the past three years. “When the students that you’re trying to inspire end up being the ones that inspire you, there’s nothing like that,” she said. “It solidifies for me that Salus really is a family, and we truly care about and support each other.”

or blind young adults for life as a future college student. For four weeks throughout the summer, Emily Vasile, MAT, TVI, MS, CLVT, Blindness and Low Vision Studies (BLVS) instructor, packed her bags and moved into the dorms at Penn State’s main campus, along with 23 Pennsylvania high school students who have visual impairments. Each week, a different group of Salus Low Vision Rehabilitation (LVR) students arrived to work with the young adults on a variety of low vision

rehabilitation skills. “Summer Academy’s goal is to foster independence as the students prepare to attend college,” Vasile said. “We show the high school students strategies on how they can maximize their remaining functional vision to the best of their abilities, especially within the context of campus living.” In addition to taking college courses and living as a college student on campus, Summer Academy high schoolers also participated in a wide range of

activities during their stay. They learned how to travel safely throughout the vast 8,500-acre campus and the surrounding community, using assistive devices as well as navigate public transportation. They learned about financial management strategies and how to use an ATM. They cooked meals and did their own laundry in the dorms. They explored potential career paths through vocational development seminars. Additionally, team-building activities such as rock climbing and participating in an aerial ropes course allowed the students to build relationships with one another and build confidence at the same time. The Salus team was responsible for the low vision section of the Summer Academy, but assisted with lessons conducted by volunteers from other Pennsylvania colleges, as vision pervades all areas of learning and daily living, Vasile explained. Vasile was joined by BLVS assistant professor Kerry Lueders, MS, COMS, TVI, CLVT. They worked jointly with the LVR students to evaluate each high schooler’s level of functional vision, which provided meaningful hands-on learning experiences for the Salus students. “Most of the LVR students were coming off of their summer coursework at Salus,” Lueders said. “On campus, Salus LVR students learn all about low vision assessments and interventions, and then we go right to Summer Academy and put their new skills into practice.” The team performed a variety of assessments and provided recommendations for the Summer Academy high schoolers, who were exposed to a wide range of optical, non-optical and electronic devices, some of which they had never before experienced. The Salus team arranged engaging activities for exploring the devices, including a bingo game requiring students to use their magnifiers to identify small movie posters on a bingo sheet and a nighttime class that introduced the students to lighting sources and how

they can impact their vision. The team also lectured on “How to Manage Your Doctor Appointments,” which focused on the practical nature of medical appointments and on what accommodations may be requested, such as asking for a large-print summary of the visit or asking for a staff member to read printed information aloud. Amy Ingebretson ’18BLVS said the Summer Academy was an incredible hands-on learning experience. “I further developed my skills related to low vision assessment and intervention, and I developed an even greater appreciation for the interdisciplinary approach,” she said. “I also gained a

lot by just listening to the students, which is absolutely essential in what we do as low vision rehabilitation professionals.” According to Vasile, who has participated in the Summer Academy since 2015, each year brings new learning experiences for everyone involved. “Every year I learn something new about myself as an instructor, teacher, and low vision therapist,” she said. “This experience is one of a kind. I love to see how the Salus students have grown after their week at Summer Academy, and how the high school students have made an impact on the Salus students in such a short amount of time.”

Salus University 2016-2017 Annual Report It’s been a little over a year since I assumed the role of vice president for Institutional Advancement and Community Relations. During this time, I have found that reconnecting with optometric alumni, many who are my former students, has been a lot of fun. It has also been rewarding to meet and connect with alumni from all of the University’s programs. It is gratifying to realize that graduates from all of our programs continue to be challenged professionally, are leaders in their field, and remain enthusiastic about their chosen health profession. I would also like to thank you for the financial support you have provided to the University this past year. Many of you continue to provide support through our annual appeal. Others of you helped make the tenth annual Looking Out for Kids charity fundraiser the most successful event since its inception. Disadvantaged children in our region are the beneficiaries of your generosity. It was also very special to see how many of our optometric graduates remembered Dr. Joseph C. Toland with a financial commitment to an endowed scholarship in his name. Other alumni have surprised us with unexpected leadership gifts, including a $100,000 gift from a Class of ’36 Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) alumnus. His generosity is a reflection of his gratitude for the education that PCO provided and the professional success he enjoyed. The support that our alumni provide is critical and central to our ability to continue a legacy of excellence in professional health education. This past year,

our partners, alumni and friends contributed a total of $864,000 for operating support and special purposes. These dollars represent endowed scholarships to provide tuition relief for students; help fund unbudgeted special projects that enrich our University community; and in a very real way, help keep the lights on. Thank you, all! In the coming year and as we approach the 100th anniversary year of PCO, the founding college of the University, I have a great deal of confidence that the generosity of our alumni will help ensure our next 100 years continue our longstanding legacy of excellence. I am grateful for your support and generosity,

Susan C. Oleszewski, OD ‘76, MA, FAAO Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Community Relations
