FALL 2012

F R O M DR . L E W I S

“One thing that I hope will never change is the enthusiasm of our students, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the support of our alumni.” Change is definitely in the air. First, let me just say that I didn’t think I would be here to write this letter. More importantly, please know how pleased I am that PCO alumnus and Salus president-designate, Rear Admiral Michael H. Mittelman, OD ’80, MPH, will be writing the president’s fall letter next year! Dr. Mittelman, who will become president July 1, 2013, is uniquely qualified to lead the University. His 32 years as a senior healthcare executive in the US Navy has given him a wealth of experience that includes clinical and research backgrounds and an extensive knowledge of multiple healthcare disciplines and healthcare delivery to diverse populations. Over the course of his career, Dr. Mittelman has worked closely with all of the healthcare professions, focusing on the provision of quality care for the whole patient. I look forward to seeing the results of his able leadership here at Salus. Another PCO alumnus with unique qualifications, James M. Caldwell, OD ’89, MEd, became dean of Student Affairs on July 1. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Caldwell was director of Admissions and vice president of Academic Affairs. Throughout his career, he has served as a clinical instructor at TEI, director of PCO Student Recruitment and has been a member of many PCO and University accreditation teams, giving him a broad perspective on the academic and operational sides of the institution that will serve our students well. Many transitions occur at this time of year on campus. The somewhat slower rhythm of summer gives way to the faster pace of autumn as the campus is re-invigorated with the start of the fall term. In August, we welcomed new classes of future optometrists, audiologists, physician assistants, low vision/ blindness professionals and public health professionals to the University community. In September, our physician assistant students graduated and began their professional careers.

This year, we have a few additional changes. The College of Education and Rehabilitation welcomed its first class of full-time, on-campus Occupational Therapy students to Elkins Park, and the University’s PhD program in Biomedicine began. Our Master of Public Health (MPH) program has 25 students – its largest number so far, and we have created more classrooms, faculty offices and lab space in one building and renovated part of another to accommodate the relocation of several departments. All of these changes auger well for the health of the University. One thing that I hope will never change is the enthusiasm of our students, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the support of our alumni. Without these, PCO would not have flourished and Salus would not exist. Even the most committed alumni, presidents, faculty and staff leave at some point. Our strength lies in the fact that the enthusiasm, dedication and support remains. It is to all of you who have contributed to the greater good of our community that I say thank you. With best wishes of the season and the New Year to each of you,

Thomas L. Lewis, OD ’70, PhD

Michael H. Mittelman, OD ’80, MPH, Salus University President-Designate In August, the University’s Board chair, Jo Surpin, announced that Rear Admiral Michael H. Mittelman, OD ’80, MPH was the Board’s unanimous choice to succeed Dr. Thomas L. Lewis as the University’s next president. Ms. Surpin noted his extensive knowledge and experience, saying “…Dr. Mittelman has worked closely with all of the healthcare professions, focusing on the provision of quality care for the whole patient. I am certain under his leadership, Salus will continue to prosper and become the nation’s leading provider of high quality healthcare professionals – which is very much in keeping with the Salus mission and credo.” An active duty member of the Armed Forces, Dr. Mittelman will complete his service with the Navy before beginning his appointment as president on July 1, 2013. In order to accommodate this timing and to Dr. Mittelman and Abby Funk, MMS ’12, shown following a commissioning ceremony held after the Physician Assistant insure a smooth commencement in September. transition, Dr. Lewis agreed to remain as president until that time and he and Dr. Mittelman are in regular contact. Since the announcement, Dr. Mittelman has been on the University’s Elkins Park campus when time allows, most recently (at press time) for the Physician Assistant commencement in September. After the graduates and their families returned to campus from the commencement ceremony, Dr. Mittelman administered the commissioned officer oath of office to Abby Funk, MMS ’12, who is now a US Navy lieutenant stationed at Cherry Point, NC. Until he takes office he will continue to come to Elkins Park on occasion, when time and his service obligations permit. A native of Long Beach, NY, Dr. Mittelman earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Jacksonville University in 1975. After earning his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in May 1980, he was commissioned into the Navy Medical Service Corps. In 1990, he earned a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and graduated from the Naval War College non-resident program in 1991. Admiral Mittelman was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Salus University in 2009 and an honorary doctorate degree from Southern College of Optometry in 2010. Currently serving as Deputy Surgeon General of the Navy and Deputy Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Rear Admiral Mittelman’s naval service has included a variety of positions around the world: • Staff optometrist and later, head of the Optometry Department, Naval Hospital Cherry Point, Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, NC 2

• Head of the Optometry Department, U.S. Naval Hospital, Rota, Spain • Head of the Optometry Department, Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, Pensacola, Fla. • Deputy Director of Research, Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory, Pensacola, Fla. • Head of the Recruit Medicine Department and Commanding Officer of Fleet Hospital Three, Naval Hospital, Great Lakes, Ill. • Command, Naval Ophthalmic Support and Training Activity, Yorktown, Va. • Command, U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, Japan • Executive Assistant to the Surgeon General of the Navy • Special Assistant to the Surgeon General at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps • Deputy Chief of Staff, Human Resources, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery • Director, Medical Resources, Plans and Policy Division (N931), Office of the Chief of Naval Operations • Director of the Medical Service Corps • Command Surgeon, U.S. Joint Forces Command and Medical Advisor to the Commander, Supreme Allied Command for Transformation (NATO) • Command Surgeon, U.S. Pacific Command. Dr. Mittelman is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a diplomate in its Section in Public Health and Environmental Vision. He is a member of the American Optometric Association and Associate Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association. He is past president of the Armed Forces Optometric Society and recipient of their Orion Award. Dr. Mittelman and his wife, Tanis, reside in the Washington, DC area and are the parents of three daughters. The University community of alumni, faculty, students and staff looks forward to welcoming them to Salus.

James. M. Caldwell, OD ’89, EdM, FAAO: New Dean of Student Affairs by Nan Myers

James. M. Caldwell, OD ’89, EdM, FAAO, who was appointed dean of Student Affairs on July 1, feels that he “prepped” for this position for many years. He credits Dr. John Crozier ’48 for whetting his interest in this area while he was just a new student at PCO. “Dr. Crozier, who was the dean of students, really made an impact. He became my role model for Student Affairs,” Dr. Caldwell says.

President Thomas L. Lewis credits Dr. Caldwell with being instrumental in the process of establishing the University, meshing the goals of academic, student and professional affairs. Dr. Caldwell modestly says he was in the right place at the right time. “Lots of institutions have created Colleges of Optometry. I don’t know of any other College of Optometry that created a University,” he adds.

After earning a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from PCO in 1989, Dr. Caldwell began his career at PCO as an admissions officer while also serving a residency and seeing patients at The Eye Institute. He was promoted to assistant director of Admissions within a year and kept the position for three years until June 1993. “I thought I was missing something by not seeing patients full time,” he says. He became a staff optometrist at an HMO in Western Pennsylvania.

“When PCO made the decision to become Salus University, we were a small group of people who took on a very large task,” he explains. “I was part of a team that initially gathered data and met with the appropriate constituencies in the state and in our region. I was also involved in the regional and programmatic accreditation and worked on the Salus proposal that we submitted to the state.”

“After 15 months, though, I realized that being in professional practice wasn’t as dynamic as working in an educational institution. At an educational institution each semester is different. There is such diversity.” He returned to PCO in September 1994 as director of Student Recruitment, a position he held until March 1997 when he was named director of Admissions. His duties continually grew. In July 2002, Dr. Caldwell took on the added responsibilities of director of Academic Counseling, which was integrated into the assistant dean of Academic Affairs in July 2004 and the associate vice president of Academic Affairs in 2008.

The Office of Student Affairs encompasses many areas of the University. The dean of Student Affairs has overall responsibility for providing leadership, management, and supervision for the departments that provide support services for students including enrollment management, enrollment services, admissions and records, academic advising and counseling, housing, financial aid, student leadership and activities, student organizations, the Hafter Student Community Center, disability services and all other student support personnel, services and programs. Additionally, the dean serves as the chief Student Services officer and is the primary student advocate at the executive level, overseeing student discipline and enforcement of the student code of conduct. “Professional schools have to focus more than undergraduate institutions on the professional development of students,” Dr. Caldwell notes. Although he has been dean of Student Affairs for only a short time, he says he looks forward to developing additional value-added concepts. Some possible ideas include expanding the use of the Hafter Center to offer cultural programs, concerts and lectures. Students choose Salus for its education and program offerings. As dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Caldwell’s goal, in addition to providing a home for lifelong learning, is to also provide an experience that will compel today’s students to be connected to Salus University throughout their career.

Occupational Therapy: The University’s Newest Degree Programs Offered through the University’s College of Education and Rehabilitation (CER), the Occupational Therapy (OT) program at Salus welcomed its first class in August. This marks the first time in years that a CER degree program has a wholly residential (on-campus learning) student body. Additionally, the University will begin a post-professional (or transitional) OTD program for licensed occupational therapists wanting to advance to doctoral-level professional preparation in May/June 2013. Featuring a Master of Science degree (MSOT) embedded within a Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) degree, the OT program at Salus offers multiple pathways for an entry-level master’s and/or doctoral degree. Students will have the flexibility to earn an entry-level master’s degree, continue their studies for a doctoral degree, or end doctoral degree studies in favor of the embedded master’s degree. The twenty-two inaugural OT students will learn together for two semesters before doctoral students decide on an area of specialization. Occupational therapy helps people who have a physical, mental or developmental condition, or who have suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) to participate in the everyday activities that provide meaning to their lives. An occupational therapist (OT) is the healthcare professional who utilizes specific treatments to develop, regain, or maintain their clients’ daily living and work skills. OTs often use interventions designed to help their clients adapt to their environment, modify a task, and/or learn a skill, all of which increases their participation in the performance of daily activities. According to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), common OT interventions range from helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, to assisting people recovering from injury to regain skills, to providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes. As with most healthcare professions today, there is more demand for occupational therapists than there are trained professionals. In the US News and World Report’s online Money section rankings that feature the top healthcare jobs

for 2012, occupational therapy is number ten. In addition to an aging population of baby boomers, returning veterans with TBI and other injuries have increased the number of people who need occupational therapy to improve their quality of life. Occupational therapy services may include comprehensive evaluations of the client’s home and other environments (e.g., workplace, school), recommendations for adaptive equipment with training in its use, and guidance and education for family members and caregivers. OT practitioners have a holistic perspective – with the focus on adapting the environment to fit the person – making that person an integral part of the therapy team, an approach very much in keeping with the philosophy behind the education of every Salus student. As part of the on-campus student body in Elkins Park, the new OT students have opportunities to interact with fellow students from optometry, audiology and physician assistant programs. “Most OT programs are at undergraduate institutions,” explains Marian Gillard, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, director of the Salus Occupational Therapy program. Speaking of the University’s other healthcare graduate degree programs, she notes, “We are providing a unique opportunity and atmosphere for a student to earn an OT degree.” Salus OT doctoral students choose their specialty area of practice early, in the second semester of their first year and Dr. Gillard says she anticipates that “many students will consider specializing in vision rehabilitation, which can encompass pediatric vision therapy, brain injury and low vision rehabilitation.” A specialty area such as low vision rehabilitation or low vision therapy – the first non-optometry degree programs begun at PCO in the 1980s – creates an interdisciplinary advantage for Salus OTD students that other schools may lack. Dr. Gillard adds that recent changes in Pennsylvania laws allow optometrists to refer patients to occupational therapists, noting that the occupational therapy profession has seen an increase in the number of optometrists who hire OTs to work in their practices. With insurance reimbursement for treating patients with low vision now permitted, an OD/OT partnership enables an optometrist to provide a value-added, extra service for his/her patients.

FALL 2012

From their first day, all Salus students are told that they now begin their professional journey, and a carefully crafted fusion of didactic and clinical instruction is designed to help that process. The Salus approach to Occupational Therapy education is to develop a distinctive, multi-track, integrated, vertical career ladder for the academic and clinical preparation of both master’s and doctoral students. Integrated educational options for students at both the postbaccalaureate and post-master’s level promote leadership careers and specializations in emerging areas of practice. The new Occupational Therapy degree programs bring the total number of Salus University degrees to twelve: Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedicine; Doctor of Optometry; Doctor of Audiology; Doctor of Occupational Therapy; Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies; Master of Science degrees in: Low Vision Rehabilitation, Low Vision Therapy, Orientation and Mobility; Master of Education for Teachers of Children with Blindness and Sensory Impairments; Master of Science in Clinical Optometry; Master of Public Health, and Master of Science in Occupational Therapy.

Alumni News From Dr. Robert N. Spivack ’85, Alumni Association President

I am thrilled to be the incoming president of the Alumni Association Board for 2012 and 2013. Since my graduation in 1985, I have watched the College grow to University status, becoming an institution educating healthcare professionals in the professions of audiology, physician assistant, low vision and blindness rehabilitation and education, public health and, most recently, occupational therapy. Since my involvement with the Alumni Association Board began in 2000, I have discovered that our graduates from these programs exemplify the same high level of academic and clinical excellence established by PCO, the University’s founding college.

I am proud to be a member of and to be associated with the community of healthcare professionals that comprise Salus University today. As alumni and healthcare professionals who work to achieve the same goal as the University’s mission – to promote health and well-being – I encourage each of you to network with fellow alumni and use one another as a resource. Stay in touch with your classmates, and the University, and get involved! Right now there are many great opportunities for engagement through the Alumni Association. Please take a look at our current goals and contact your College’s Alumni representative or the Alumni Office if you would like to be involved. We look forward to your participation as we work towards developing new and innovative ways to engage our alumni.

FALL 2012

University News Rear Admiral Michael H. Mittelman, OD ’80, MPH was the unanimous choice of the University’s Board of Trustees to succeed current president Dr. Thomas L. Lewis. The public announcement was made in July by Board Chair Jo Surpin, who noted Dr. Mittelman’s vision for the University – to become the nation’s leading provider of high quality, vital healthcare professionals – is very much in keeping with the Salus mission and credo. Admiral Mittelman remains on active duty with the Navy until next year and will begin his appointment as Salus University president on July 1, 2013. (see page two for more on Dr. Mittelman) In August, President Lewis announced the appointment of James M. Caldwell, OD ’89, EdM, FAAO, as the University’s new dean of Student Affairs. Prior to accepting this appointment Dean Caldwell was Salus vice president of Academic Affairs and the director of the Office of Admissions. (see page three for more on Dean Caldwell) Students in the University’s new Biomedicine degree programs were welcomed in August. Created in response to increased demand for graduate research training in biomedicine, the programs currently offer a PhD with an embedded Master of Science degree. The programs’ curricula have been developed by Pierrette Dayhaw-Barker, PhD, associate dean of Graduate Programs in Biomedicine. This is the University’s first PhD program and the first degree program not affiliated with one of the University’s four colleges. In Research news, Elena V. Olshevskaya, PhD, Igor V. Peshenko, PhD, Audrey B. Savchenko, PhD, and Alexander Dizhoor, PhD, Hafter Chair of Pharmacology, earlier this year published their study in the Journal of Neuroscience earlier this year, which deals with the identification of some of the molecular pathways that lead to retinal degeneration. During this transitional year to his retirement, President Thomas L. Lewis has received a number of honors. In early June Dr. Lewis’ portrait by artist John Ennis was unveiled at an on-campus gathering of colleagues, family and friends. (see the portrait at http://www. john-ennis.com/t.lewis). Later that month Dr. Lewis was inducted into the National Optometry Hall of Fame at a reception during the American Optometric Association’s (AOA) annual Optometry’s Meeting in Chicago. The AOA noted the impact that Dr. Lewis has had on “both the professions of optometry and patients around the world,” citing his creation of postgraduate programs in Europe in optometry and vision sciences. His entry into the Hall of Fame also honored Dr. Lewis for his leadership and memberships in numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Optometry (past president), Partnership Foundation for Optometric Education, National Board of Examiners in Optometry and the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry.

FALL 2012

Dean Audrey Smith was instrumental in the development of two versions of a lighted cane with a broad-spectrum white light designed to help people with low vision walk around at night and in poorly lit areas. Dean Smith had Salus CER students testing prototypes in the field, enlisted her mother as a tester and took the canes to an international blindness and low vision conference in New Zealand, where they were much acclaimed. (College of Health Sciences, Physician Assistant (PA) Program)

Faculty appointments and transitions: In April, Dr. Anthony F. Di Stefano, vice president of Academic Affairs, announced that Physician Assistant (PA) program director, Dr. Richard Vause, would assume the additional responsibilities of associate dean for Program Development within the College of Health Sciences. In this position, Dr. Vause will collaborate with faculty and administration across Academic Affairs in areas such as the evaluation of potential new degree and non-degree programs within the College, and the support of the expansion of the College’s national network of field placements for proposed new programs and the achievement of greater interdisciplinary learning experiences in such settings. Dr. Di Stefano also announced the appointment of Dr. John Fitzgerald, PA program medical director, to the additional position of associate director of the PA program. Dr. Fitzgerald has assumed additional operational and leadership responsibilities in the PA program that build on his current role as medical director and director of Clinical Programs. He will assume responsibility as acting PA program director in Dr. Vause’s absence. Joseph Anton, MD, has been appointed associate professor. News: The first Brigham Young University-Idaho students who will complete the entire PA program as agreed between BYUI and Salus entered the PA Class of 2014 in August. Over the past two years the College has welcomed several BYUI students; however, these students are the first to enter the program and transfer to the Salus PA program as third-year undergraduates. Upon successful completion of their first year in the PA program, these students will have earned their undergraduate degree from BYUI. Upon the successful completion of their second year in the PA program, they will have earned their Master of Medical Science (MMS) degree from Salus University.

The Physician Assistant Class of 2013 proved victorious as, for the second consecutive year, Salus took home the trophy in the annual Physician Assistant Olympics. Salus students bested peers from five area PA programs while helping to raise $3,000 for this year’s non-profit recipient, the Philadelphia chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Salus PA students’ compassion was also on display in May. At the annual conference of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) held in Toronto, several students attended a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game one evening. They learned they were seated with a young boy who had lost his father (his only surviving parent) just two weeks before and his grandparents had brought him to the game in an effort to keep his spirits up. After hearing the story, the PA students quietly pooled their money and purchased an official MLB Blue Jays shirt for the five-year old, along with a few other souvenirs. The boy and his grandparents were surprised and grateful; however, the efforts of the students did not end in Toronto. On their return to campus, the PA students established a scholarship fund for the youngster to help defray his college expenses when the time comes. THE FRONTLINE

FALL 2012

Reunion 2012 Reconnect and Reminisce: Honoring our Past, Celebrating our Future by Nan Myers

Alumni gathered on May 5 to tour the Elkins Park campus, visit The Eye Institute (TEI)– newly renovated and with a 14,000 square foot addition – and be reunited with old friends and colleagues. After the campus and TEI tours, they gathered at the University’s Café, which allowed for a leisurely lunch and visit with former classmates. The mid-afternoon Alumni Association annual meeting featured a spirited discussion with President Thomas L. Lewis, OD ’70, PhD, deans and program directors. Conversation centered on the evolution of the University, its impact on healthcare professions and what to look forward to at Salus. Attendees voted on new nominations for the 20122013 Alumni Association Board. In the evening, a reunion cocktail reception with Dr. Lewis and other faculty produced many happy moments. The reception was followed by dinner and the presentation of four awards. Alumni Association president, John Ochsenreither, OD ’88, presented the Albert Fitch Memorial Alumnus of the Year Award to John S. Biernacki, OD ’52 (pictured top right), for his work on behalf of the optometry profession in Pennsylvania, which included playing a key role in the passage of the state diagnostic, therapeutic and glaucoma bills. In addition to being instrumental in securing funding for the building of The Eye Institute, Dr. Biernacki also was honored for his years of teaching more than 50 PCO students during their clinical externships. Dr. Barbara Yanak ’85, who delivered a message from the Pennsylvania Optometric Association president, was one of those externs. A private practice optometrist in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Dr. Biernacki’s practice has been taken over by his daughter, Donna B. McLaughlin, OD ’81, and her husband, William M. McLaughlin, Jr., OD ’81. Granddaughter Julie McLaughlin, OD, is a 2012 PCO graduate.

Dr. Dorman is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Jean, four children and eight grandchildren.

in memo r iam ( continue d ) Vernon Pennington, OD ’55 of Baltimore, MD, on June 18, 2012. In announcing Dr. Pennington’s death, the headline in the Maryland Optometric Association (MOA) newsletter read, “Beloved OD Passes Away.” Among PCO’s first African American graduates, Dr. Pennington was a member of the AOA for 42 years. He also was honored with the MOA Mel Waxman Award in 2001 in recognition of his long-term, sustained, dedicated and loyal service to the optometric profession. Michael Birnbaum, OD ’62 of Reistertown, MD, on October 13, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Arlene, two daughters and seven grandchildren. Elliot L. Shack, OD ’66 of Newark, NJ on February 27, 2012. He was president of the local optometric society in his time, and he helped many new graduates buy practices from older doctors. Donald Taylor, OD ’68 of Syracuse, NY on October 27, 2011. He served as an Air Force optometrist in Germany and then opened a private practice in Chittenango, NY. He is survived by his wife, Frances, three children and five grandchildren.

Philip P. Czyz, OD ’69 of Port Charlotte, Florida, died May 5, 2012. During his career he received the prestigious Optometric Recognition Award from the American Optometric Association. Philip was an active member of numerous professional societies and service organization including the American Optometric Association, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, National Eye Research Foundation, Rotary, and Lions Club. He was a founding investor of the Charlotte Racquet Club and former vision consultant for the Chicago White Sox. He is survived by his loving family, a son Dr. Craig Czyz, and twins Corey and Shannon Czyz who are college students. Larry Roger Miller, OD ’87 on April 4, 2012, in Kentucky. He and his wife, Helen Shaffer Miller, CER ’87, graduated in the same year. She survives him along with one daughter and one grandson. Ricarda K. Nitz, MS ’07 of Rapid City, SD on October 15, 2010. Ms. Nitz was a graduate of the Low Vision Rehabilitation program and worked in the fields of blindness and vision impairment for 38 years. She is survived by her husband, daughter and several other family members. William Lawrence Saad, OD, on February 22, 2012. A former member of the PCO Board of Trustees, Dr. Saad is survived by his wife, Barbara “Bonnie” Coughlin, daughter, son and six grandchildren.

This year the profession of Optometry lost a man known to many as the “Father of Modern Optometry,” Dr. Irving Borish. In response to Dr. Borish’s passing, Dr. Elmer Friedman, OD ’46, wrote to say that he and his wife, Lillian, had interviewed Dr. Borish in 1998 for an article in The Opti-Courier. At that time, Dr. Borish predicted that healthcare would no longer be delivered in the complete, personal service mode and shared his concept of “grouping and merging” with the Friedmans, saying that was the answer. To make his point, Dr. Borish also told a joke about the mayor of a small town in Maine, who was giving a friend a tour of the local countryside. The friend commented that he saw no sign of people in any offices, schools or

stores. The mayor explained it was time for the potato crop to be picked. As the town’s only industry, everyone participated in the harvest. The mayor also told his friend that, since the potato crop was unprofitable, the town was very poor. The mayor revealed that a few years before, the town had contacted the Department of Agriculture, which sent an agent to examine the soil. The report concluded that it would be very profitable for the town to grow broccoli, since they could harvest three crops each season. The mayor’s friend was confused as he didn’t see any broccoli fields and asked, “What happened? Why aren’t you growing any broccoli?” The mayor responded, “It gets in the way of growing the potatoes.”

The Eye Institute: Setting Our Sights Our PCO graduates enjoy success for a number of reasons, among them being the intensive clinical experience they receive at The Eye Institute. The renovation of this key facility has been completed, and the capital campaign, Setting Our Sights, will continue until next year. The opportunity remains for you to name an engraved brick and join the hundreds of individuals continuing the PCO legacy of a strong commitment to clinical excellence. The engraved bricks will be installed at the front entrance of The Eye Institute. An 8 x 8 inch brick is a $1,000 gift, while a 4 x 8 inch brick is a $500 gift.

Please visit www.salus.edu/alumni/donateonline/html or call 215.780.1393 for details. Bricks can be a memorial to loved ones or colleagues, can honor those who are special or, with your name on it, bear witness of your proud support and continued commitment. Your support is central to the core mission of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

Take this opportunity to be part of the vision and name your brick today!

FALL 2012

Salus University Annual Report

“ …we will continue to develop new programs, improve our facilities and welcome a new president. Amongst all of this change I look forward to a few things that stay the same – the support of our wonderful partners.” Impressive growth and change was accomplished this year at Salus University. As is always the case, much of this was achieved through the partnerships the University has forged with its alumni, friends, parents and corporate friends. Some of these partnerships are long standing – you will notice the many 10 consecutive-year donors we have noted in the report. Whether their contributions were financial or programmatic, we consider ourselves privileged to have such outstanding partners, and would like to take this opportunity to thank them. A special thank you must go to the Hafter family. Martin Hafter, OD, Class of 1949 passed away in October 2011. Over many decades, he and his family were generous supporters of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and Salus University. Their partnership made possible scholarships, an endowed chair in pharmacology, a glaucoma and neuro eye fellowship and, of course, the Hafter Student Community Center. We miss his direct manner, his energetic mind and his deep affection for the College. A critically important project that we have been working on for several years is the renovation and redesign of The Eye Institute. TEI has been operating in its renovated and enhanced facility for a year now. The entire patient care level, as well as the faculty and administrative areas are completely finished. Some construction continues on the upper level, where space is being created for clinical research areas. This key project would not have been possible without the support of our partners. Two notable commitments during this past fiscal year included Vision Services Plan (VSP), which is dedicating a primary care suite, and the Salus University Alumni Association, which made a generous pledge to the campaign. As of July 31, 2012 our supporters had collectively pledged $2,209,084. We expect to close the fundraising for this project by December 31.

Lynne C. Corboy, MS, MPH Director of Development

In other areas of the University, we were able to renovate and refurbish an important teaching lab through a partnership with an ophthalmic company. This teaching laboratory has been re-dedicated and named in recognition of The Hoya Free-Form Company. The room is now a more contemporary environment in which optometry students can learn and practice their knowledge and skills in the important clinical area of ophthalmic optics. Our students benefited from gifts for endowed scholarships, graduations awards and support for student-organized international humanitarian missions. We also received support for our clinical services, particularly our pediatric services and the Specialized Populations Assessment and Rehabilitation Center (SPARC), where we work with children with multiple disabilities. Significant support for our pediatric services was also received through the Looking Out For Kids fundraising event attended by over 200 individuals last October. Our partners, alumni and friends contributed a total of $956,771 for operating support as well as these special purposes. In the coming year we will continue to develop new programs, improve our facilities and welcome a new president. Amongst all of this change I look forward to a few things that stay the same – the support of our wonderful partners.
