FALL 2014

FROM THE PRESIDENT

As I complete my first year at the helm of Salus, I look back and realize just how fast this year has gone! We’ve accomplished so much yet still have much to do. We’ve officially re-dedicated The Eye Institute following an $11 million renovation project; we’ve hosted a great alumni reunion at the National Constitution Center in conjunction with the American Optometric Association’s annual meeting; we’ve earned important accreditation upgrades for our Physician Assistant (seven-year continuing) and Occupational Therapy (full) programs, and hope to begin our Speech-Language Pathology program in the fall. Finally, we have launched a new five-year strategic planning cycle. During all of these processes, I have been impressed by our world-class faculty, wonderful staff, active alumni association and talented students. Most of all, I begin my second year with a renewed sense of mission and accomplishment that’s anchored by the energy and creativity of our Salus community. As I write this, much time and effort – integrating many of your insights and suggestions – has gone into the work of our strategic plan that will help map the course of Salus University for the next three to five years. The key aspect of this planning cycle is to ensure we’re moving forward united as a University and not four separate colleges. Thus each strategic priority will address how Salus will move forward, supported by aligned goals and priorities developed for each College. To date we’ve reviewed the results of the environmental scans and landscape team reports. From this information we have developed an updated vision and mission statement for the University, as well as formulated four overarching strategic priorities. While these are not yet finalized, I can tell you that they clearly embrace the key issues that influence and affect how Salus will interact with our ever-changing healthcare system, prospective students, our alumni, faculty and staff. Many of the issues discussed within our team were brought to us by you during the scanning processes. Others were articulated by some “thought leaders” in American healthcare whose input we sought and who included Acting Surgeon General of the US, RADM Boris Lushniak and Dr. Zeke Emanuel, director of the Clinical Bioethics Department at the US National Institutes of Health, and head of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania. Both experts had similar thoughts on how Salus and those professions we educate and train will play a key, essential role in the American healthcare landscape of the near and far futures. I’m confident that as the American healthcare landscape continues to change around us we will remain agile and relevant to ensure that our graduates and alumni are prepared to meet the clinical, professional and political challenges that will come their way.

Needless to say, it’s an exciting time at Salus. Our dynamic, relevant programs will position us extremely well to navigate the changing tides of healthcare education and delivery. The Salus Institute for Medical Rehabilitation, combining many of our specialties, will redefine how an interdisciplinary approach to treating acquired brain injury can be effectively leveraged, both in our own clinical settings as well as others. At Salus we not only teach how to practice in an integrated healthcare system, we also instill the important aspect of caring for our patients. That’s what sets us apart from many other institutions. Student education at each of our four colleges speaks to the many aspects of this century’s growing need to promote health and well-being throughout society, which is the Salus mission. We continue to offer a broad-based, interprofessional clinical education, presenting our optometry, audiology and physician assistant students with a wide range of challenging primary care opportunities and giving them the clinical education for which we are wellknown. Our alumni preceptors are an invaluable asset, as they advance our students’ skill levels during their clinical externships, helping to make our graduates sought after. All of these contributions – time, participation, insights, suggestions, dialogue and preceptorships – are important and critical to our success. Your active and continued support of Salus is not only greatly appreciated but is absolutely necessary if we are to continue to provide the highest level of health science education to the future professionals that we train. If you’re in Philadelphia stop in to see us; you’ll be proud of what we’ve accomplished together.

Dr. Janice Scharre: Provost and Vice President, Academic Affairs by Cathy Shea

Janice Scharre, OD, MA, FAAO is a firm believer in the collaborative education model. As the new Salus provost and vice president of academic affairs, she plans to build on its widely regarded strength in clinical training. Dr. Scharre, as an academic leader with more than twenty-five years of experience and a strong advocacy for interdisciplinary education, has hit the ground running. In 2012, while serving as a consultant for Salus, Dr. Scharre was instrumental in the development of the University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry Scholars Program. The first accelerated Doctor of Optometry degree program in the country, the Scholars Program is highly selective, offering enrolled students the opportunity to earn the credit equivalency of students in a traditional four-year program in just three years. The new, thirty-six month program is yet another Salus/PCO first in a line of accomplishments dating back to 1923*. Dr. Scharre’s philosophy on education emphasizes a collaborative approach. “An effective educational model,” she explains, “requires collaboration between faculty and administration with student input. Administration needs to lay the groundwork and provide the support structure for faculty, deans and program directors to do their jobs effectively in alignment with the mission, goals and objectives of the University.” “As a multidisciplinary health sciences university, we are on the leading edge of healthcare education,” said Dr. Scharre. “I feel fortunate that the majority of my professional care experience has been in an interdisciplinary setting working with physicians, child development specialists, speech and language specialists, and occupational and physical therapists. This model is closely aligned with the focus and direction of Salus as well as the future of healthcare.” When it comes to a broader healthcare perspective, Dr. Scharre believes the University stands to benefit from the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA). “It informs our operation and our decision making. Our focus is to keep Salus on track, knowing that we need to provide not just interprofessional education for our students, but also for our faculty to be able to interact across their professions.” Dr. Scharre is currently working on a pilot program in which Salus faculty teach across disciplines, with plans to develop it into an ongoing program.

Another initiative being developed under Dr. Scharre’s leadership is a pilot program for faculty and student participation in community-based health care screenings. In the past, Salus students visited local schools and provided eye care and audiology screenings. According to Dr. Scharre, “We are ready to take it to the next level, with a community health care initiative designed to offer audiology, optometry, speech and language screenings.” Dr. Scharre believes an important role of the provost is to provide faculty with opportunities to work together and encourage these and other innovative collaborative pilot programs. She said, “The toughest thing at a university is that people are often separated by a building. At Salus, we have the advantage of all being in the same building for the most part, and creating alignment for our programs. It is critical to develop relationships in order to learn what those around you have to offer. As administrators, we need to provide the forum for this interaction.” With a style that is not only collaborative but also transparent, Dr. Scharre believes in communicating across many layers to keep people informed. “If you put five or six very smart people in the room and present them with a challenge, I believe they can solve it,” she said, adding that she is a firm believer in people working across disciplines to offer a collective vision of where they need to go. Dr. Scharre is well aware of the challenges facing Salus students as they prepare for their careers in patient care, education or research. “We don’t really know what the changes in our healthcare system will mean for our students. Will they have more job opportunities than they can imagine or will the jobs be centered in a different area? How will they manage their debt and will that affect the positions they are able to accept? These are questions we need to keep in the forefront of our strategic planning as educators. We also need to work closely with legislators to address these issues,” she said. She believes that Salus must remain a good steward of the money that has been entrusted to it and use it wisely to provide the highest level of education. Dr. Scharre plans to devote her efforts toward ensuring that Salus University continues to be known for its excellence in academic programs. She is committed to the University’s mission to strive for excellence and would like to see Salus become the school of choice for students and faculty. Before joining Salus, Dr. Scharre spent her whole life in the Midwest. Her passion for clinical practice, specifically clinical pediatric care, led her to obtain a master’s degree in this area.

* In 1923, Pennsylvania State College of Optometry (Pennsylvania College of Optometry’s original name) conferred the nation’s first Doctor of Optometry degree. 2

FALL 2014

“As a multidisciplinary health sciences university, we are on the leading edge of health-care education… I am doing exactly what I want to be doing.”

Previously, Dr. Scharre served as dean of optometry, associate dean for clinical education, coordinator for rehabilitative services and chief of pediatric/binocular vision services for the Illinois College of Optometry/Illinois Eye Institute. She has provided patient care/clinical education in underserved communities in Chicago and has presented on pediatric eye care and research on autism and augmentative communication systems at both national and international healthcare conferences. Dr. Scharre was integral in the creation of several interprofessional collaborations with the University of Chicago Department of Ophthalmology and numerous organizations, including the former Child Development Center and the Easter Seals Treatment Center. She also developed and implemented a reading and learning disability program in cooperation with DePaul University’s College of Education while in Chicago.

Her background and expertise make her new role at Salus an easy transition. “I am doing exactly what I want to be doing,” she said. Since joining Salus – and moving away from the Midwest for the first time – Dr. Scharre has found Philadelphia to be “one of the warmest and most welcoming cities and a very positive experience.” She is married with two sons and two young grandsons. With a love of the outdoors and a very active lifestyle, Dr. Scharre is a bicyclist and her husband is a marathon runner. With a shared love of travel, they have been to many exotic locations, including Thailand, Egypt and recently visited Burma/Myanmar.

Dr. Lori Grover: Dean of Optometry by Cathy Shea

Lori Grover, OD, PhD, always knew she wanted to go into the field of optometry and optometric education. She explained, “I really wanted to pursue a career in healthcare, but at that time there were no pre-optometry undergraduate programs. I feel fortunate that as an undergraduate biology major, I was offered an elective in optometry.” Dr. Grover is not a traditional optometric academic – the first ten years of her career were spent focusing on continuing education. During this time she was a frequent lecturer and became involved with family medicine and blind rehabilitation. In choosing optometry as a career, getting hands-on experience helped Dr. Grover decide that optometry was the path she wanted to follow. “I spent time working in an optometrist’s office and learned so much by seeing the profession in action. I truly enjoyed the patient interaction and became fascinated with eye care and vision issues.” In June, the Salus community welcomed Dr. Grover as dean of the University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO). Dr. Grover came to Salus from a leadership position at Arizona State University, where she provided strategic, academic and operational direction as well as research and planning recommendations to advance the overall mission of the colleges and university. Her distinguished twenty-three year academic career includes numerous accomplishments, including being among the first faculty members at Johns Hopkins University to complete the leadership training program through the Office of Women in Science and Medicine. She has held faculty appointments in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and at Southern California College of Optometry (now Ketchum University).

Today, she is highly regarded for her extensive experience in optometric and interprofessional education, curricular programming, clinical care of chronic vision impairment and low vision and health services research. Dr. Grover has particular expertise in recognizing the gaps in optometry care, enabling her to determine what type of clinical care programs need to be implemented in order to improve access to care. With a clinical specialty in treating patients with vision impairment and rehabilitation, she is a strong advocate for raising awareness of the chronic conditions that often impact vision. “It is important from a public health standpoint that these conditions are recognized,” she said, stressing the importance of evidencebased care, health policy evaluation and health services research as pillars of health education and training – especially related to the Affordable Care Act. “Salus and PCO have always offered innovative student training. This is an exciting time and we are looking forward to taking the lead as healthcare reform is implemented,” she said. Vested in the future of Salus, Dr. Grover sees the University as having an important leadership role in healthcare and hopes the University’s multidisciplinary approach can serve as a model for other health-related professions. “Joining Salus is everything I thought it would be and more. The skills I can bring to the table are a great fit for Salus’ program as I work to help promote the strategic vision of Dr. Mittelman and support our provost, Dr. Scharre,” said Dr. Grover. “We share a view of where Salus and PCO need to go, as well as how to integrate the changing healthcare landscape with the education and training we provide for our students.” Dr. Grover is also impressed with the people she has found at Salus, saying, “The people – students, faculty and staff – are so dedicated. I love waking up every day knowing I will be working with truly motivated people.” A thought leader in optometric professional education and health care policy planning, Dr. Grover is a diplomate of the Public Health and Environmental Vision Section of the American Academy of Optometry, past chair of the AOA Vision Rehabilitation Section and a member of the Governor’s Office on Health Care Reform, HCRCC and Essential Health Benefits Advisory Committee for the State of Maryland. In her free time, Dr. Grover enjoys snorkeling, golfing and antiquing. She is also looking forward to spending time at the Delaware and New Jersey beaches.

Dr. Mitchell Scheiman: Dean of Research by Cathy Shea

Mitchell M. Scheiman, OD, FAAO, FCOVD, the new Salus dean of Research, began his career at Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) in 1982. He has held the position of interim dean of Research, has served as associate dean of Clinical Research, and was chief of the Pediatric/Binocular Vision Service at The Eye Institute (TEI) for twenty-eight years. Dr. Scheiman has been recognized nationally for his leadership in binocular vision, serving as chair of the Binocular Vision and Perception Diplomate Program of the American Academy of Optometry, as an Executive Committee member of the Pediatric Eye Doctor Investigator Group (PEDIG), and on the Department of Defense Clinical Practice Consensus Steering Committee on Vision. A graduate of New England College of Optometry and full-time optometric educator/researcher for the past thirty-four years, Dr. Scheiman specializes in pediatric optometry, binocular vision disorders and vision therapy. He has served on many national committees for the American Optometric Association (AOA) and the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), and serves on the editorial board of several journals. He has published over 1600 journal articles and has written four textbooks. Over the course of his career, Mitch Scheiman has grown to love research and derives great satisfaction from his own projects. He currently serves as the co-protocol chair of the National Eye Institute (NEI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Study (CITS) and as study chair of the NEI-funded Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Trial – Attention and Reading (CITT-ART).

“Research provides great satisfaction as the researcher is the one who is actually making the discoveries and writing the manuscripts that can translate into more effective management and treatment leading to improved patient care,” he says. Dr. Scheiman finds his new role gratifying as he works to “develop a whole group of independent researchers” and sees his influence growing “with many students who go on to become researchers and train their own students.” In his new role Dr. Scheiman hopes to create a Universitywide culture that values research. “I think research is an important component of any institution and offers a number of fundamental benefits,” he explained. “Research enhances the educational experience for students while creating a sense of pride. Research also enhances the reputation of the University as it becomes recognized through presentations and published manuscripts that often result in national and international attention.” Dr. Scheiman also feels there is an intrinsic value in a research-focused university, as it establishes a stimulating environment for students and faculty alike. “My goal is to create a collaborative environment. With the input of the deans and the administration, I would like to explore the creation of an interdisciplinary research course that would reach across all university programs and allow students and faculty who don’t currently have the opportunity to interact to work together across all departments,” he said. Increasing research funding at Salus is another of Dr. Scheiman’s goals. “One of my roles will be to improve our capability to compete for government and industry funding, which requires recruitment and retention of faculty who are well-versed in the independent research process.” In his free time, Dr. Scheiman loves to cook vegan food. “If I weren’t as busy as I am, I would go back to school to become a vegan chef.” He is also a runner and has recently started serving as a pacer for his son, Eli, who is an ultra-distance runner. As a pacer he runs the last 20 miles of his son’s regular 50- to 100-mile runs.

Alexis Abate: Director of Communications by Cathy Shea

Alexis Abate, director of Communications at Salus, comes to this newly created position with a unique knowledge of the University. In her role as marketing coordinator for The Eye Institute for the past six and a half years, Alexis organized the University’s most successful children’s charity fundraiser, “Looking Out for Kids.” The proceeds from this annual event, which have increased by more than 400 percent in net revenue since its inception in 2007, help provide vision care for under-insured and uninsured children in Philadelphia and its surrounding communities. In her new and expanded role, Alexis will be responsible for all University press events, community outreach and communications materials, including the University’s current re-branding campaign. She will oversee communications and marketing efforts designed to promote Salus’ reputation for academic and clinical excellence, innovation and quality. Alexis’ background and expertise in public relations, journalism and event planning will serve her well in her new position. During her tenure at TEI, she helped to develop the University’s patient care newsletter and supervised the school vision care programs. “I have always wanted to do something that matters – not just a job – and I feel fortunate to be a part of the Salus team. I am really enjoying my work on the new branding campaign and being a part of the growth and change taking place here,” she says. “I have always felt that it is important to give back to the community.”

Alexis would like to see the current vision-screening programs expand into other areas such as audiology and speech-language pathology – providing assistance for local residents in need. “I would like to see all parts of the University being more involved in the community.” “With so many excellent institutions of higher learning and healthcare facilities in our market, I am really looking forward to helping Salus stand out as a truly outstanding health sciences University,” says Alexis, who welcomes the challenges of her new position. Alexis earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass media writing with a concentration in mass communication from LaSalle University, another institution with a strong commitment to service. She also holds a Master of Arts degree from New York Institute of Technology. Active in the community, Alexis serves as a member of the La Salle University Alumni Association Board of Directors and chair of its Communication department’s Alumni Advisory Board. She is a member of the Philadelphia Public Relations Association and has been a volunteer for the planning committee of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk, as well as the American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Walk. In addition to her volunteer work, Alexis likes to read in her spare time. She also enjoys traveling with family and friends and her trips have included diverse destinations such as Quebec City, Seattle and Europe.

Looking Out for Kids 2011, Alexis with Philadelphia Eagles guest host Joselio Hanson.

Alumni Message: The Perpetual Gift From the Alumni Association President

Hello, fellow alumni – those of the past century and those of the current century. My name is Ken Savitski and I am a proud Pennsylvania College of Optometry Class of 1987 graduate, currently serving as our Alumni Association president. Can you remember the last time your graduate school requested the gift of your time? Can you remember the help and guidance you received from fellow alumni with your preadmission preparation at our graduate university? Those of us who remember receiving help were fortunate. As alumni of Salus University, we have a very important role in educating potential applicants about our professions and our university. The time will come – maybe it has already – when a patient or client will express an interest in what you do. Maybe you will give your time to discuss your professional role and invite them to shadow you for the day. I have done this several times and the feedback I’ve received from my patient and/or their family was very rewarding. So I urge you to promote your profession, your practice, and our university by becoming a Salus Alumni Ambassador. There are many ways to participate in the Alumni Ambassador program. Here are just a few: • Assist with admissions recruitment: The Office of Admissions participates in dozens of graduate school fairs throughout the country. Alumni can accompany an Admissions officer to a local college and speak with prospective students. These events typically occur from mid-September to early November during the afternoon hours. The list of scheduled dates and times can be found on the University’s homepage under “Fall Recruiting Schedule.” • Refer an applicant to the University: Some of our brightest graduates came to Salus because they were inspired by an alumnus who talked with them about their profession. You can help foster interest in your profession by displaying the University’s admissions material in your office. • Contacting admitted students: A sincere congratulatory call or letter from an alumnus to an admitted student speaks volumes about the level of commitment we have to our admitted students. The Office of Admissions would be thrilled if you could reach out to a student, perhaps one living in your area. This outreach typically begins in September and continues into the spring. • Reception for admitted students: We invite you to host a casual get together at your home or practice with newly admitted students. This is a way to engage students informally and discuss all of the wonderful opportunities you have been afforded since graduation. The timing for such events is typically early to mid-spring and in the evenings or on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. To sign up to help with any of the above initiatives or to discuss your own ideas, please contact Jamie Lemisch at 215.780.1391 or jlemisch@salus.edu. Supporting our University is more than just giving money. Every day, when we enter our places of work, we represent our professions, our families and our alma mater. By serving as an Alumni Ambassador you will be giving the important gift of your time in support of your profession and the University – it’s a “perpetual gift” that keeps on giving. Thank you for your past and future support. I wish you and your families a Happy Holiday and a wonderful, healthy and Happy New Year. I look forward to meeting many of you at professional and Salus events. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to email me at the address listed below. Respectfully,

Kenneth W. Savitski, OD ’87 President, Salus University Alumni Association alumnipresident@salus.edu 7

University News President Mittelman announced the appointment of Alexis Abate, MA, as the University’s director of Communications, effective October 1. Dr. Mittelman said, “Her background, experience and expertise will serve the University well, as Alexis leads our efforts to ensure that our name and reputation find a wider audience as we continue our mission to become the best institution in the nation for the education of healthcare professionals.” (See article on page 6) Mr. John Gaal, vice president of Clinical Operations, announced the appointment of Karen Kutner, MBA, as assistant vice president, Clinical Operations earlier this year. During her twenty-eight year career in healthcare, Ms. Kutner has held senior administrative positions at Lehigh Valley Health Systems, Temple University School of Medicine and Pennsylvania Hospital. She earned her MBA at Temple University Fox School of Business and holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration. Many members of the University community have participated in internal surveys and focus groups for the past six to nine months, and have offered information, ideas, feedback, and suggestions that will help to strengthen the University’s strategic planning and identity/marketing efforts. The surveys and focus groups were coordinated by Dr. Larry McClure, director of Institutional Research and Strategic Planning, and Ms. Lynne Corboy, chair of the Marketing committee and director of Development. The information obtained from Salus community members, who ranged from members of the Board of Trustees to the newest staff members and included many alumni, have been incorporated into the process of creating the new University strategic plan for 2015-2020 and the new Salus identity/ branding plan. Both plans will be explored more thoroughly in the spring 2015 issue. In August, Dr. Mittelman testified before Philadelphia City Council in support of City Resolution 140613, “SchoolBased Family Services.” He explained from the perspective of Salus University why establishing school-based family service centers (SBFSC) would be valuable to both school-age children of Philadelphia and to the community at large. Dr. Mittelman addressed the issue of health equity for children and families in urban settings and its challenges noting that, at a minimum, SBFSCs will provide access to quality care in a supportive environment within a family’s community. He also had the opportunity to speak about The Eye Institute and its satellite practices, and noted that they are uniquely positioned to assume an integral role in ensuring the visual health of Philadelphia’s children and their families. Dr. Mittelman’s full testimony as well as the City resolution can be found on the University’s website at www.salus.edu/aboutSalus/president_news.html. 12

A Temple alumna and former chair of the board of Temple Health Systems, Ms. Scacetti was honored for her many accomplishments by Temple University at their annual gala in April. Sarah Appel, OD and Marcy Graboyes, MS, were awarded a grant of $20,000 in February to fund the Feinbloom community-based low vision mobile clinic. The grant was provided through the generosity of the Albert B. Millett Memorial Fund of the BNY Mellon Mid-Atlantic Charitable Trusts and the funding will allow the mobile clinic to continue bringing low vision evaluations to children with visual impairment in their educational settings throughout the Delaware Valley. The William Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center was established to build upon the groundbreaking work of Dr. William Feinbloom (1904-1985), who utilized his knowledge of physics, mathematics, biophysics and visual psychology to invent many specialized magnification devices that are still used today in the rehabilitation of individuals with visual impairment. The University community bid thank you and farewell to Marian Weber, library technician, earlier this year. In her twenty-one years at PCO/Salus, Ms. Weber became a familiar presence to the legions of students and faculty she assisted. RESEARCH

On October 19, Dr. Toland was honored at The Eye Institute, where the Toland Classroom was dedicated and a donor plaque was unveiled. After Dr. Mittelman ’80 and Dr. Sue Oleszewski ’76 spoke of Dr. Toland, attendees were invited to share their thoughts. Dr. Toland’s humor, compassion and his more than thirty years of commitment to PCO and Salus were the subject of many recollections – all shared with affection and many containing humor. In past communications with alumni, faculty and staff Dr. Susan Oleszewski ’76, who spearheaded the campaign for the classroom, has noted that Dr. Toland showed great “professional courage as an ophthalmologist, testifying in front of state legislatures to advance optometry. Dr. Toland’s professional support to our patients and students during the pre-therapeutic years was critical to meeting our institutional mission related to practicing full-scope optometry.” The ceremony and reception afterwards allowed Salus PCO alumni, and TEI faculty and staff to congratulate Dr. Toland and to let him know what he has meant to them personally and professionally. Dr. and Mrs. Toland and family members.

THE AURICLE

George S. Osborne College of Audiology

Dean Victor Bray has announced the following faculty appointments: Greg Genna, AuD, clinical instructor, Pennsylvania Ear Institute Elizabeth Sedunov, AuD, clinical instructor, Pennsylvania Ear Institute Landmark Pennsylvania audiology legislation was signed into law in July. The Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists Licensure Act is the first significant update of audiology licensure in Pennsylvania and contains requirements reflective of national standards, updates, terminology and, beginning January 1, 2015, will require all applicants for licensure to have a doctoral degree in Audiology. In September, the University became the first academic institution in the country to endorse federal legislation aimed at improving Medicare audiologic delivery of patient services. The endorsement, in support of the Audiology Patient Choice Act – HR5304, was signed by Dr. Mittelman, Provost Scharre and Dean Bray. The bill aims to improve access to qualified, licensed Medicare providers by allowing seniors with a suspected hearing or balance disorder to seek treatment directly from audiologists, eliminating archaic medical doctor referral requirements. If passed, it would allow patients to choose among qualified providers for Medicare-covered audiologic services by authorizing Medicare to reimburse audiologists for the Medicare-covered services that they are licensed to provide – services already covered by Medicare when delivered by other providers. The bill’s sponsors are US Representative Matt Cartwright (D-PA) and US Representative Lynne Jenkins (R-KS), and it is supported by the Academy of Doctors of Audiology (ADA). In October, Dean Bray joined fellow ADA members who participated in a day of Capitol Hill meetings with Congressional staff to continue lobbying efforts. Adjunct faculty, James W. ( Jay) Hall III, PhD, was the recipient of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) Presidential Award for his contributions to AAA and the profession of Audiology.

FALL 2014

201 3 -2 0 1 4

Salus University Annual Report

In the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2014, our partners, alumni and friends contributed a total of $897,919‌ These gifts enriched the education that we offer to our students and enhanced the services that we are able to provide in our clinical facilities and in the community. Once again our community of supporters made meaningful contributions to the University. In the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2014, our partners, alumni and friends contributed a total of $897,919 for operating support as well as for special purposes. These gifts enriched the education that we offer to our students and enhanced the services that we are able to provide in our clinical facilities and in the community. Two notable efforts in this fiscal year were the Thomas Lewis Endowment Fund and the Joseph Toland Classroom. Many of our students benefit annually from gifts for endowed scholarships and graduation awards, and the University has established a new endowment to honor our president emeritus, Dr. Lewis. The Thomas L. Lewis Endowment Fund will be used to support outstanding students and for other academic purposes. Donors had made generous contributions totaling nearly $70,000 at the close of the fiscal year. We seek to reach our goal of $100,000 in the next fiscal year. Former optometric residents and clinical faculty have generously contributed funds to honor long-time faculty member Joseph C. Toland, OD ’54, MD. Their gifts made the October dedication of the Toland Classroom in The Eye Institute possible.

The University also received support for our clinical services, particularly our pediatric services and the Specialized Populations Assessment and Rehabilitation Center (SPARC), where we work with children with multiple disabilities. Significant support for our pediatric services was received through the annual Looking Out For Kids fundraising event attended by nearly 300 individuals in November of 2013. In the coming year Dr. Mittelman will be leading Salus in a University-wide planning process. I feel confident that our alumni and friends will be energized by our strategic direction and proud to be supporters of our mission. Now and in the future, we are all deeply grateful for the support that has helped to build a strong foundation for Salus University.
