Welcome to the Festive Issue!

Love it or loathe it, the holiday season is officially upon us. For some, it’s an all-consuming whirlwind of planning, shopping, and socialising. For others, it’s a cherished time to relax and connect with loved ones. Wherever you stand, don’t fret if you haven’t started your preparations yet. Our fabulous expert, Janet, has curated a chic Gift Guide to help you find the perfect presents, and At the Kitchen has designed a showstopping Christmas Day menu guaranteed to wow your guests.

This year, many of us are embracing a more mindful approach to spending –it’s been a challenging time, after all. But let’s be honest: the focus is shifting to thoughtful purchases and meaningful experiences. It’s not about extravagance; it’s about what truly matters. And as we stroll down the high street, it’s hard not to feel a pang of sadness seeing some of our favourite shops and restaurants closed.

Christmas doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect. Whether it’s a turkey with all the trimmings, a cosy lasagne, or simply enjoying time with your favourite people – it’s the togetherness that counts. And for those of us who do go all out, January’s detoxes, and gym memberships will be waiting (hello, Dry January!).

It’s also important to acknowledge that the festive season isn’t joyous for everyone. For some, it’s a time of loneliness or an escape from difficult circumstances. If this resonates with you – or someone you know – there are incredible charities ready to help.

We’re proud supporters of Endeavour, a charity providing vital support for anyone affected by domestic abuse. Their services are inclusive, welcoming male and LGBTQI+ survivors, and even offering pet fostering for those with furry companions. Visit endeavourproject.org.uk or call 01204 394 842 for support.

Another lifeline is PAPYRUS – Prevention of Young Suicide, dedicated to saving young lives. Their confidential HOPELINE247 service is available 24 /7, offering expert guidance and a listening ear for those in need. Reach them at 0800 068 41 41. Remember, you’re never alone—help is always just a call away.

So, as you dive into this festive edition, treat yourself to a mince pie, pour a glass of mulled wine or a cuppa, and savour all the stories we’ve prepared for you. To our new readers in Stockton Heath, a warm welcome!

We’ll see you in February, but until then, stay safe, enjoy the celebrations, and from all of us here, have a very merry Christmas and a fabulous New Year.

Time to ramp up the glamour for the party season

If you can’t pile on the glam at this time of the year, when can you? A show-stopping party outfit is the perfect way to feel absolutely fabulous, so Glossy’s advice is don’t hold back.

For the past couple of years, shimmering sequins and diamante have taken centre stage when it comes to after-dark dressing and once again, they are everywhere. Why? Because we all love a bit of glitter, don’t we? It’s just such fun to throw our inhibitions to the wind and deck ourselves out in dazzle. So what if we can’t wear it past New Year – we’ll certainly feel party-ready in a gorgeous sequin or diamante dress like the ones on these pages. And if you’ve already got a sequin skirt in your wardrobe, well bought! You can easily update the look with a new top or jacket. Similarly, if you’ve got a fave black dress then you can add a pair of heels or earrings to keep it fresh. Knee length and over-the-knee boots are very on trend right now and they look fantastic when paired with a mini skirt, but fashion forward when worn with mid-calf styles too,

We’ve added some colour here. I love the red brown of the gorgeous Zimmerman dress, but when it comes to partywear black still reigns supreme. Just make sure it shimmers!

The Art of Watchmaking; Prestons’

Authorised Rolex Service Centre

Here, we talk with Prestons’ After Sales team about their experience as Rolex-trained Watchmakers at each of Prestons’ Rolex Authorised Service Centres. We hear about the relationships they build with their clients, supporting the Prestons showrooms in Wilmslow, Guildford, Norwich and Leeds.

Opened in February 2020, the 昀rst Rolex Authorised Service Centre is located on the 昀rst 昀oor of Prestons Wilmslow whilst the second, opened in 2023, located in Prestons Norwich. Here, we explore with the team what led them to become watchmakers, the importance of servicing your wristwatch and what makes Prestons showrooms so special.

Did you always know you wanted to work with watches?

Steve: “I think I knew very early on; I could have only been 16 years old. I remember vividly my mother seeing an advert in the local newspaper and saying to me “you like taking things apart, why don’t you have a go at this?” I read the advert and have been a watchmaker ever since. I suppose I have my mother to thank for where I am today.”

Ryan: “I started out selling watches rather than servicing them, but quickly discovered a passion for watchmaking. I am now a Rolex Technician, and it is my dream to become a Rolex watchmaker in future.”

Nick: “I initially began my career in a creative role, but have always been intrigued by watches. I fell in love with the engineering that goes into these timepieces, and seized an opportunity to enroll on a WOSTEP polishing course. The WOSTEP Foundation is an internationally recognised watchmaking institution based in Switzerland, founded in 1966 it is an incredible place for those aspiring to work in an Authorised Service Centre like ours, or elsewhere in the watch industry. I 昀nd that polishing combines my creative and technical interests, as there is true beauty in restoring a watch to its original condition while preserving its unique character. I have now quali昀ed as a Rolex Accredited Re昀nisher, and I am so pleased to be working in Prestons’ Rolex Authorised Service Centre in Norwich supporting each of our clients.”

Ryan O’Connell, Technician at Prestons Wilmslow

What does it mean to be a Rolex-trained watchmaker?

Ryan: “Each watchmaker working within a Rolex Authorised Service Centre is specially trained by Rolex to ensure consistent quality across all their operations worldwide. Here at Prestons, we are always on hand when a client brings their watch into the showroom. As the 昀rst to make a technical examination of a client’s timepiece, we see the memories in every mark on the case.”

“The team and I know these wristwatches have been worn and loved, often for decades, and we are honoured to be trusted with their servicing”
Saul Biddulph, Watchmaker at Prestons Wilmslow

Saul: “I started my journey to becoming a Rolex-trained watchmaker at the British School of Watchmaking in Manchester, it was a fascinating experience and only reinforced my passion for horology. Now I am quali昀ed and based at Prestons Wilmslow, it brings me so much joy to work amongst my passion each day. The team and I know these wristwatches have been worn and loved, often for decades, and we are honoured to be trusted with their servicing.”

Out of all the watches you’ve serviced, which is your favourite?

Joseph: “Personally, I love working on watches from clients who visit us regularly. The team and I recently received a watch from a returning client who had been gifted the timepiece for his twenty-昀rst birthday here at Prestons Norwich. It is always a pleasure to see these watches come back in for servicing, and to see them develop with their wearer over time. These timepieces become an integral part of a person’s day-to-day, and a physical reminder of the special moments in their life.”

What advice would you give on the care of a Rolex watch?

Steve: “The 昀tting of the watch onto a wrist is so important. Each of our dedicated sales team members are Rolex trained and therefore able to advise on the size of the bracelet to suit the size of your wrist.”

Nick: “Rolex watches are designed to be worn and loved every day. Over the years, it is natural for scratches and marks to appear. We would advise keeping to the servicing schedule rather than bringing the timepiece in for polishing whenever it sustains a scratch, and only ever entrusting the watch to a Rolex-trained polisher. This will help to ensure the longevity of the watch and keep it looking its best for decades to come.”

Laura New, Saul Biddulph, Steve Tillston, Abbas Ikleriya & Ryan O’Connell

What makes the Rolex Servicing process so special?

Joseph: “Rolex watches are designed and built to last. The service process begins from the moment a client brings their wristwatch to one of our showrooms and ends when it leaves us with its two-year international guarantee.

The servicing of a Rolex watch comprises several detailed steps requiring the use of speci昀c tools and instruments that are tested and sometimes even developed by the brand – I love how meticulous every step is. The team and I begin the service process by separating the bracelet from the case and delicately removing the movement. From that point on, the movement, case and bracelet follow separate servicing paths.

Each component is carefully examined to determine whether it still meets Rolex requirements, cleaned, dried, lubricated and carefully reassembled piece by piece. The case, bracelet and parts are individually re-polished or satin-昀nished by hand by myself or one of the other watchmakers in our team.

“The servicing of a Rolex watch comprises several detailed steps requiring the use of speci昀c tools and instruments that are tested and sometimes even developed by the brand – I love how meticulous every step is”
Joseph Bentley, Head Watchmaker at Prestons Norwich

The watch is tested for accuracy, precision and waterproofness as well as pressure-tested to ensure it meets the expected chronometric performance set by Rolex. At the end of the process, the timepiece is placed in a specialist pouch and is presented back to the client by one of our dedicated sales consultants. It is an incredibly detailed process.”

Neil Body, Andrew Reynolds, Joseph Bentley, Jake Peasgood & Nick Clayton

What do you think having an in-house Rolex Authorised Service Centre brings to Prestons and their clients?

Jake: “It o昀ers in-house expertise to each of our clients, as often we are client-facing in the showroom or the Service Centre. The teams at each of our Rolex Authorised Service Centres loves to show our clients the servicing process and guide them through the work that will be undertaken on their timepiece.”

Ryan: “When a client brings a watch to us, it can be a great act of trust. I remember we were once visited by a lady who had received her watch as a bequest from her mother. The timepiece was unfortunately in need of signi昀cant repairs, and she was nervous about any changes we might make to it. I was so glad to be able to speak with her in person, so that she could be reassured that the character and sentiment of the watch would remain intact after the servicing process.”

What makes the Prestons Experience so special?

Steve: “Here at Prestons, we operate to traditional values of service and quality. The Rolex Authorised Service Centres in Wilmslow and Norwich ensure the highest standards are maintained across all our watchmaking services, while our showrooms allow us to meet with and understand our clients’ needs.”

Laura: “Whether a client brings their watch into Prestons Wilmslow, Prestons Guildford, Prestons Norwich or Rolex by Prestons, Leeds, each of our Rolex Authorised Service Centres ensures they can trust that it receives our personal care at every step of the process.”

Steve, Joseph and their teams look forward to supporting and advising Prestons’ clients for years to come.

Forty years ago, a rag-tag band of pop stars checked their egos at the door and made us all help feed the world… and the record wasn’t bad, either!

A biblical famine

Michael Buerk’s 1984 BBC news reports of the catastrophic climate-induced famine in Ethiopia, which he described as “biblical”, are well remembered by those who saw them in real time. And if you did, I imagine that, like all of us, you were distraught and stricken with helpless frustration that people were dying of starvation in the 20th century. A starvation that seemed completely needless and cruel.

These feelings were shared by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, who also watched Buerk’s reports. A Boomtown Rat and an Ultravoxer, respectively – two mere pop stars, and not particularly A-listers at that. But what they did next would elevate them both to something akin to Top of the Pops sainthood.

We have to do something and we have to do it now!

Instead of shrugging his shoulders in helpless despair, Bob got on the phone to Midge and said: “We have to do something. Anything. But we have to do something and do it now!”

So, they did what songwriters do; given they were both adept at writing the words and music to big hit singles, they started playing around with a guitar and a notepad and pencil, with a view to making a charity record that would donate all its money from sales to hunger relief charities in Ethiopia. And while coming up with the bones of the song we’ve all come to know and love today, they started thinking about how best to get this record out in the open, so as many people as possible would hear it, buy it, and contribute to the aid programme.

We’re gonna need a bigger band… Well, a Bob and Midge record, no matter how good it might have been, was never going to reach the numbers needed for a project like this. Something the two were clearly aware of, fortunately. But Geldof was a well-connected schmoozer in the pop world, and Ure had been around the block more than a few times himself, so they opened up their little black books and started ringing around. Bowie…Sting…Bono…the Frankies, the Durannies and the Spandaus…Wham! and the Bananaramas…Quo and the Style Council…Paul Young…Culture Club…Kool and the Gang and Jody Watley (well, they were in town, so why not? And last but not least among some other fine British pop stars and one hit wonders, the drummer in Genesis. Erm, Phil Collins. Forty of ‘em in all.

Missing in action

There were some notable absences, though. David Bowie, for whom the opening lines were originally intended, but eventually recorded by Paul Young, couldn’t make the session. He did sing those opening lines the following year at the ensuing Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium. Holly Johnson didn’t make his flight down to London, but Boy George did; he flew in from New York on Concorde, all at his own expense. As for Elton John, Bryan Ferry, Elvis Costello, and perhaps the biggest star absent from this galaxy, Paul McCartney, there was no sign.

Bowie, Holly and Macca all recorded messages for the B-side, though, so they were there in spirit. Oh, and our very own Stephen Morrissey, once of this parish, but now living in some dark, narrow corridor of his now closed mind, hated the project… which he charmlessly restated ad nauseam to anyone who’d listen.

Where egos dare

Now that’s a lot of ego – not to mention hairspray and blusher, and that was just the Duran/Spandau axis of fabulousness – for anyone to contend with, but Geldof and Ure were well liked and respected in equal measure by all concerned. The recording, over the course of a bright November day at Trevor Horn’s SARM Studios in Notting Hill, was a resounding success. No tears, no tantrums and no artistic differences. Just every one of them wanting to make a positive difference. And, who knows, perhaps get some makeup tips from Boy George or highlights from the other George? Well, we can imagine, can’t we?

Next stop…world domination with Live Aid and USA for Africa

And the rest is, of course, history. It’s still the fastest-selling single in the UK and was only supplanted at the top of the all-time sales charts by Elton John’s Candle in the Wind tribute to Princess Diana. It inspired the Americans to do something similar (but nowhere near as brilliant as ours…of course). And it spawned what still remains an astonishing day of live music the following year, as countries all over the world hosted Live Aid concerts to help alleviate the famine in Ethiopia. Events that were watched on TV by 40% of the world’s population – 1.9 billion of us.

It’s Christmas time, there’s no need to be afraid…

And it just isn’t Christmas without it, so firmly has it ensconced itself into our pop and wider culture. So, Merry Christmas everybody, and let’s raise a glass and a cheer for that magical time when hope became a real possibility – even if for only a short time. And two fading pop stars shone more brightly than they could ever have dreamt possible.

A feast for the eyes

Want to pull out all the stops at the festive table? Here’s how…

You know how they say we eat with our eyes? Well, don’t confine that truism to just the food. The way you dress your dining room for the festive season is a surefire way to make an impact. It can be the little things that delight – cute plates, quirky place card holders and coloured cocktail glasses, or you can really go crazy and invest in a statement dining table like the one featured here from House of Hommes.

Table linens too can make a huge difference so take your inspiration from designers Molly Mahon and Sophie Allport, who use fabrics to create an upbeat, festive mood.

There’s a place for the smart and sophisticated at the dining table in the shape of elegant candlesticks and beautiful glassware, but there’s also much to recommend playfulness and colour at a time of year when everything seems pretty dark and grey. Above all, a beautiful dining table tells guests that you want to delight them – and isn’t that a great gift to offer those you love?

A Christmas dinner that’ll steal the show

Food editor, stylist and author Angela Boggiano and her photographer husband, Craig Robertson, owners of At The Kitchen in Cheadle Hulme, share their Christmas menu

A delicious sharing menu that still has all the flavours of Christmas but cooked and prepped differently. A light and crunchy salad starter, herby, garlic-filled rolled turkey breast, simple sides and a great alternative Christmas pudding. This is the perfect menu for those looking for something a little different this year.

Roast beetroot, ruby grapefruit and Cheshire cheese salad with candied pecans

Keep it light and tasty for starters with this delicious salad, which has a wonderful combination of textures and flavours.

Serves 4

400g fresh beetroot, washed

2 tbsp balsamic vinegar

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

100g pecan halves

2 tbsp caster sugar

1 ruby grapefruit, cut into segments

2 heads red chicory, broken into separate leaves

150g Cheshire cheese, crumbled

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas

4. Place the washed beetroot in a small roasting tin. Drizzle over the oil and balsamic and a sprinkling of salt and ground black pepper and cover with foil. Place in the oven and bake for 45 minutes until completely tender when pierced with a small, sharp knife. Set aside to cool completely.

2. Whilst the oven is on, place the pecan halves on a baking tray and sprinkle with the caster sugar and a pinch of salt. Toast in the oven for five to eight minutes until crunchy and toasted.

3. When the beetroot is completely cooled, remove the skin and slice thinly.

4. To assemble the salad, arrange slices of beetroot between four serving plates along with the red chicory leaves and grapefruit segments. Scatter with the crumbled Cheshire cheese and toasted pecans and drizzle with the balsamic juices from the roasting tin.

Roast Tuscan turkey with herby garlic filling

A great alternative to the usual Christmas turkey roast. Ask your butcher to butterfly the turkey breast.

Serves 6

30g salted butter, softened

25g flat leaf parsley

2 tbsp fresh sage

2 sprigs fresh rosemary

3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 tbsp fennel seeds

1 pinch chilli flakes

1.2kg turkey breast, trimmed & butterflied

12 slices smoked bacon rashers

2 tbsp olive oil

200ml white wine

300ml chicken stock

150g black grapes

1. Place the butter, herbs, garlic, fennel seeds and chilli in a bowl with a pinch of salt and ground black pepper and mash all together well.

2. Lay out the turkey breast skin-side down and spread the herby garlic butter over the surface. Roll up tightly and wrap the smoked bacon rashers evenly around the outside of the roll and secure tightly with kitchen string. Place in a roasting tin and drizzle the top with the olive oil.

3. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan

160°C/gas 4. Pour the wine and chicken stock in the bottom of the roasting tin,

cover with foil loosely and roast for about one hour. Remove the foil and roast for a further 30 minutes until the bacon is golden and crispy. Add the grapes 15 minutes before the end of cooking.

4. Transfer the joint to a carving board and leave to rest for about 20 minutes covered with foil.

5. Slice the turkey into thin slices and serve with the pan juices and roasted grapes.

Celeriac & potato gratin

This is perfect served alongside the roast. Simply place in the oven at the same time as the rolled turkey and both will be ready to serve together.

Serves 6

420ml double cream

300ml milk

1tbsp Dijon mustard

600g waxy, red-skinned potatoes, peeled & thinly sliced

1 small celeriac (about 500g), peeled & thinly sliced

100g mature Cheddar cheese, grated

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas

4. Mix together the cream, milk and mustard in a large jug with a pinch of salt and ground black pepper.

2. Place a layer of potatoes in a 1.2-litre, ovenproof gratin dish. Pour over a little of the cream mixture and then sprinkle with some cheese. Top with a layer of celeriac and then repeat with the cream mixture and cheese. Continue until all the potatoes, celeriac and cream mixture are layered up.

3. Place on a baking tray, cover with foil and bake for one hour. Remove the foil and bake for a further 30 minutes until golden brown and the vegetables are tender. Leave to sit for five minutes before serving.

Balsamic and cranberry Brussel sprouts

The combination of the slightly soured cranberries and sweet balsamic works

beautifully with the Brussel sprouts.

Serves 6

500g Brussel sprouts, halved

2 tbsp olive oil

1 large red onion, finely chopped

150g fresh cranberries

2 tbsp balsamic vinegar

1. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and cook the Brussel sprouts for just five minutes. Drain well.

2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the parboiled Brussel sprouts and cook for 10-15 minutes, tossing occasionally until lightly browned.

3. Add the cranberries and cook for a further five minutes until they burst and soften. Season with a pinch of salt and a sprinkling of ground black pepper. Drizzle with the balsamic vinegar and toss well. Serve immediately.

Spiced sticky ginger and apple cake with salted toffee sauce

This is a warm, sticky ginger and toffee cake, which makes a great alternative to Christmas pudding – the whole family will love it.

Serves 6

200g butter, softened

200g soft brown sugar

275g plain flour

2 tsp baking powder

2 tsp ground ginger

3 large free-range eggs

300ml milk

6 tbsp ready-made salted toffee sauce

2 eating apples, cored & finely sliced

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas

4. Grease and line the base of a 23cm square cake tin. Put the butter in a large bowl with the sugar, then beat well with an electric whisk until light, pale and creamy. Add the flour, baking powder, ground ginger, eggs and milk and mix well.

2. Drizzle the base of the tin with four tbsp of the toffee sauce. Then lay the sliced apples over the top in the base of the tin. Pour the cake mix over the apples and then bake for 35-40 minutes until golden and cooked. To test, insert with a skewer and if it comes out clean, it is cooked.

3. Allow to cool slightly, then turn out so the apples are uppermost. Peel off the paper, cut into squares and then serve warm with the remaining toffee sauce and scoops of ice cream.

Mayhem in the Mountains

It’s official. Lord Muck has gone viral. But not in a good way. When we moved to sunny Spain, I thought our skiing days were over. Don’t get me wrong, I have al ways loved skiing. The mountains. The air. The apres-ski. But even though his Lordship is a great skier, he has shown a surprising aptitude for getting into trouble over the years.

The signs were clear from the start. 1992. Mount Hutt. His Lordship’s first ski trip so I placed him safely in ski school and headed off to ski with friends. Come late afternoon, enjoying a well-earned beer, I spied a young woman dragging her skis behind her, sobbing. Heading over, she explained she was done. She’d wiped out so many times on her first day skiing that every inch of her body hurt. We chatted a while and I had just managed to persuade her to give it another go with me the next day, when what do I spy but a skier coming down the slope fast – wobbling, waving, totally out of control, and heading straight towards us. Before I knew it, Lord Muck had crashed into this poor girl, throwing her up into the air and flat onto her back –at which point, gathering what was left of her dignity, she left the slopes for the final time, dragging her skis behind her, sobbing.

them deep enough in the snow – and I watched in horror as his skis lurched to the left and promptly knocked over 50 pairs of skis, domino-style, almost beheading a French woman in the process. Cue me sprinting to get Lord Muck down the mountain before we faced Agincourt 2.0.

So, when he announced a surprise trip to the Sierra Nevada last week, I packed my bags with equal parts excitement and dread. However, after two days without mishap, I’d just begun to relax, when his now infamous chairlift incident happened.

And who could forget the final day of our La Plagne trip? Me sunbathing slopeside, vin chaud in hand, waiting for Lord Muck to be dropped off by his guide. As is the custom, when he arrived, he removed his skis and placed them upright next to the long line of skis, leaning against the bar’s wooden fence. Alas, he didn’t wedge

It was mid-morning on day three, and we approached the top station. I hopped off and was skiing down when I heard an odd noise behind me – a curious cross between a mewing cat and a banshee in distress. Turning around, I realised Lord Muck was still on the chairlift, seemingly… stuck. Somehow, he’d forgotten to secure the front strap of his rucksack, which was now wedged tightly into the back of the chair’s mechanism. There he dangled, 20 feet in the air, legs flailing, mewing, trying with the grace of a startled pigeon to shake off the rucksack and make his es cape. But not before the angry Spanish lift attendant was forced to shut down the entire lift system. Furious fellow skiers, now stranded mid-air, began filming the ordeal, slow hand clapping, providing a live audience as Lord Muck wrestled with his predicament and started to climb down, middle-aged man style. Just as the ski patrol arrived to add to his humiliation. And as if things couldn’t get more mortifying, that evening, over dinner, we discovered that the ‘Englishman’s Wild Chairlift Es cape’ had gone viral. Oh, the shame…

The Woof Guide to High Force

Where the humans get steeped in history and Peppa gets sausages!

The day started with a trip to the stunning Raby Castle, a fantastic medieval Game of Thrones-esque estate that is still in private ownership. The humans were bowled over by its sheer scale and loved its his tory.

One claim to fame is that it was the scene of an uprising where local landowners got together and attempted to overthrow the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I. The Barons’ Hall is possibly the largest room in a house in England and is the scene of all this per fidy. It’s a space big enough to play football in but since it’s crammed with paintings and precious Meissen porcelain – you probably shouldn’t!

Dogs are allowed in the beautiful grounds – they even have occasional special poochfriendly events such as Bark in the Park, and I could also make myself at home in the brilliant new cafe where queues

form for the delights of freshly made salads, home-made mains and scrumptious cakes.

We were staying at the wonderful High Force Hotel which is part of the Raby Es tate, it’s a country inn that is both rustic and elegant. The perfect place in every way for a winter break. Our bedroom was what you might call understated luxury, featuring beautiful, well thought-out soft furnishings and huge windows over looking the surrounding countryside and, across the road, the trail which leads to the famous High Force waterfall.

One of the highlights of our stay was a stroll to this fantastic landmark. You take a winding path for about 10 to 20 minutes and suddenly you’re confronted with one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country. You hear its powerful rush even before you get to see it in all its magnificence. It’s a must while you’re here for sure! There are longer walks too and also the chance to enjoy stargazing at High Force, with supper afterwards at the hotel.

We all loved the bar area with its bare floorboards, little wooden tables, Windsor-

raby.co.uk

back chairs and old church pews, along with the roaring log fire and old pictures.

But it was the panelled dining room where we had dinner. Yes, the High Force Hotel is as dog friendly as that! No being banished to the bar here! I was fussed over and fed pieces of pork while the humans enjoyed lovely fresh dishes including a starter of onion tarte tatin featuring delicious, sweet caramelised onions speckled with blue cheese on an airy pastry base, and duck croquettes – soft flakes of meat coated in crisp panko breadcrumbs, served with a sweet chilli sauce. Next came steak and chips and an excellent chickpea and sweet potato curry with just enough of a chilli kick. For pudding there was a rich, creamy, light chocolate mousse and a lovely sticky toffee pudding.

From an excellent wine list, the humans chose a white Karavitakis Vilana Vidiano from Crete which was floral, fruity and utterly delicious. I loved every minute of my stay not least because (as the grand finale) there were sausages for my breakfast. They really know how to give dogs the VIP treatment. It’s a woof from me!

The experience

After a quick application of numbing cream to the targeted areas, Jamie, my skilled practitioner, expertly administered around ten tiny injections to each side of my face. The procedure was surprisingly swift, and while the sensation was sharp (like a mild sting), it was entirely bearable. The best part? The treatment was over before I knew it.

For optimal results, a course of two to three sessions is recommended, spaced about a month apart. I’ve now completed three sessions, and the difference in my skin is remarkable. My complexion is noticeably smoother, plumper, and—dare I say it—positively glowing. And next on my list? The delicate tear-trough area. Early reports suggest this treatment works wonders for dark circles and puffiness, so I can’t wait to see the results.

What exactly are Polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides (PNs) are a game-changing bio-stimulator that work wonders for skin regeneration. These miracle molecules, derived from fish (yes, fish), are designed to mirror human DNA, which is why you might’ve heard them referred to as the “salmon sperm facial.” Sounds intriguing, right? The magic happens when the PNs are injected into the skin, stimulating the body’s own collagen and elastin production to restore vitality, hydration, and overall skin quality that naturally diminishes with age.

How do Polynucleotides differ from traditional aesthetic treatments?

Unlike fillers and anti-wrinkle injections, which target specific concerns like volume

Could Polynucleotide treatments be the next big thing in skincare?

When it comes to skin rejuvenation, we’re always on the lookout for the next breakthrough. So, when I received an invitation to experience the much-talked-about Polynucleotide treatment at Thérapie Clinic, nestled in the luxurious Trafford Centre, I was intrigued—though, if I’m being honest, I probably should’ve done a little more homework beforehand. Luckily, the in-depth consultation that preceded my appointment eased any uncertainties.

loss or wrinkles, Polynucleotide treatments focus on improving overall skin quality. Think of them as a deep, cellular reset for your skin. They stimulate fibroblasts to produce fresh collagen, enhancing everything from texture and elasticity to hydration—essentially restoring that youthful glow over time.

What skin concerns can Polynucleotides tackle?

From fine lines and wrinkles to scars, rosacea, and general skin laxity, Polynucleotides are incredibly versatile. They’re a brilliant solution for improving skin texture, reducing inflammation, and enhancing the overall appearance of your complexion—suitable for all skin types and a range of concerns.

How long until I see results?

Patience is key. It usually takes around four weeks to notice initial improvements, and by the second treatment, the most dramatic results typically appear around the two-month mark.

What’s the treatment like?

Polynucleotides are administered via microinjections, a minimally invasive procedure that involves only minor discomfort. Thanks to the application of topical numbing cream and the use of fine needles, most people report a tolerable experience. Mild stinging or pinprick sensations are to be expected, but nothing that should make you hesitate.

How long do the results last?

Results can last anywhere from six months to over a year, depending on

factors like your age, skin type, and the specific concerns being addressed. The more consistent you are with your treatments, the longer-lasting your results will be.

Can Polynucleotides be combined with other aesthetic treatments?

Absolutely! Polynucleotides are the perfect complement to other aesthetic procedures, enhancing the results of everything from Botox and fillers to laser treatments. They work synergistically to rejuvenate and refresh the face, providing a more comprehensive approach to skincare.

Who’s a good candidate for Polynucleotide treatments?

While most people can benefit from Polynucleotide treatments, there are a few caveats to keep in mind. As the product is derived from fish, it’s not suitable for vegetarians, vegans, or anyone with a fish allergy. Similarly, it’s not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, as with any injectable treatment.

Ready to try Polynucleotides?

Whether you're looking to refresh your complexion or target specific concerns like fine lines and scarring, Polynucleotide treatments offer a rejuvenating solution that stimulates your skin’s natural healing process. For a glowing, youthful complexion that lasts, this could very well be the future of skincare.

Meet Julie... our wonderful front-of-house

Tell us about your journey to Fixx salons and how you found it?

Prior to my front-of-house role at Fixx I worked as a stylist for almost 30 years, mainly in high end salons.

I started my career as a 14-year-old junior in Portsmouth, where after finishing school, I completed my apprenticeship. I then worked in various salons on the South coast, before moving to Winchester where I continued my career before finally settling in Manchester over 10 years ago. I worked as a senior stylist until six years ago, when an arm injury unfortunately meant I could no longer pursue that path. At the same time Fixx salons was setting up and looking for a receptionist, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity for me as it meant that I could stay in the industry I’m passionate about, just in another role. It was a twist of fate and I’ve been with Fixx ever since!

What do you love about

your job?

The biggest joy I get is the rapport that I have with all our clientele. Being frontof-house, I’m lucky enough to get to know the clients which enables me to really understand their needs from a different perspective to the client-stylist relationship. I’d like to think this helps builds trust and confidence for our customers with the salon. I genuinely love speaking to all of our customers.

What excites you about the industry?

I love the way that colour has evolved with new technologies. Colour is not just about having light and dark – it can be about embracing the natural hair colour. For example, many people are now embracing the grey whereas previously it was more about covering it. Colour has also become more about experimentation and being true to your personality and creativity!

I also love the fact that whilst we have many new techniques and styles, the classic cuts are still popular and can be twisted into something completely new. Those classic cuts have always been a winner for me.

Why do you think a good front-of-house presence is important?

Front-of-house is the first impression that a client has of a salon, whether on the telephone or face-to-face. My role is to make our clients always feel at ease by being welcoming, efficient, genuine and able to manage any questions or concerns they might have.

“ The biggest joy I get is the rapport that I had with all our clientele ”

I try and make it personal, so as well as remembering each client’s name, it may be knowing what coffee they prefer, events they’ve previously talked about or birthday celebrations!

My role isn’t limited to the customers but also looking after the stylists and the salon in general. If the staff know that the reception is run well, and their clients are well looked after, it makes their lives easier and reduces the stress upon them, especially at busy times. I think this is where my previous experience as a stylist myself really helps me as I know first-hand the challenges they face.

Finally, I believe that a visit to Fixx salon should be a positive experience end-toend. Visiting a salon is one of life’s little luxuries. With this in mind it’s imperative that all our clients should be made to feel special and treated as an individual from the moment they step in to the salon to the moment they leave with a fantastic new haircut or colour.

All aboard the Giant Walk 2025

After the success of the inaugural ‘Hale to Hale’ Giant Walk in May, Glossy Magazine is delighted to announce its sponsorship of two dates of this waterside walking marathon when it returns in 2025

Last year 60 walkers safely completed this endurance walking event, meaning many completing a marathon for the first time, and earned a well-deserved bamboo finishers medal.

Speaking with Glossy Magazine, organiser Marc Duschenes attributed the success of the event to the walkers being well supported from the moment they signed up with route guides and training tips, the route itself being very flat, with plenty of facilities along the way at rest stops beside the Mersey Way, Manchester Ship Canal and TransPennine Trail. So many new friendships were made, the event WhatsApp group is still active all these months later.

The 2025 event will start as the 2024 event did, with a coach ride from Altrincham to Merseyside. Walkers can leave kit bags on the bus (which has a WC on board!), which will meet the group every hour or so with a longer stop for a picnic and fundraising opportunity in Stockton Heath. During the walk, participants are able to spread into three groups, each with an expert group leader, depending on their walking speed, and the organisers will again have a mobile leader on a bike chalking out directions and even carrying spare kit.

If you’re looking for a fitness challenge for 2025, this could be the one for you! All walkers are expected to fundraise and can do so for any charity of their choice. Last May £10,000 was raised for charities including The Christie, Cancer Research UK, Brain Tumour Research, MS Society,

The Friendship Circle, Marie Curie, Macmillan Cancer Support, Search and Rescue and St Ann’s Hospice.

Two dates have been released for 2025 (10 May and 11 May) and tickets are on sale now at giantwalk.org. An entry level half-marathon option starting at noon in Stockton Heath is also available and suitable for families. Private, corporate or CSR day walks are also available from the organisers.

Glossy Magazine is delighted to be affiliated to this all-inclusive challenge that opens up endurance events to a much wider range of people.

Can-Survive UK

Dynamic Marcella Turner founded Can-Survive UK in 2015 following the loss of both her parents to cancer.

The middle child of seven, Manchester-born Marcella set up and tailored her award-winning charity to meet the culturally sensitive needs of primarily, but not exclusively, African and Caribbean people diagnosed with or caring for someone with cancer. Can-Survive UK offers support and information for anyone experiencing the effects of cancer, be they a patient, carer, relative, friend or work colleague.

Despite numerous cancer awareness campaigns, many community members have an overriding fear of the illness. Marcella explains: “In our community certain people still regard cancer as a taboo subject. For those individuals, it carries not only a stigma but worse still, a sense of shame. This can be so strongly felt that they will keep their diagnosis a complete secret. They end up attending hospital appointments alone, not understanding what is happening and undergoing treatment without an awareness of its impact and how to manage it. This is why Can-Survive UK exists.

“Our three full-time staff members, six part-time workers and sixteen volunteers work hard to try and dispel the myths and diffuse people’s anxieties by encouraging patients and families to talk more openly about dealing with the realities of cancer. By applying this approach to the illness and its treatments, we support people through the trauma of a cancer diagnosis.”

“Can-Survive UK staff can be contacted Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm and are accessible to service users for emergencies outside of these hours.

Marcella continues: “Over the last nine years, Can-Survive UK has grown. We now also deliver services in Oldham, Tameside, Trafford and will shortly be opening new services in Bolton and Salford.”

In its support hubs, Can-Survive UK provides its service users with extensive and comprehensive activities. In addition to the intimate one-to-one chat areas available in the Kath Locke Centre in Hulme, visitors can find comfy lounge spaces in which to relax and socialise, as well as areas for more physical activities.

Therapies onsite are numerous and include reflexology, massages, talking therapy, general advice and information, plus de-stressing techniques, art therapy, meditation and exercise classes. For people who are housebound and unable to attend the support groups, Can-Survive UK’s home service comes into action. The charity also provides an advocacy service and will accompany service users to hospital, GP and other appointments.

As part of their social enterprise, Can-Survive UK recently launched CSUK Vintage – an online store selling high quality pre-loved clothes and accessories. Proceeds from CSUK Vintage

contribute to the charity’s running costs. Marcella’s vision is the future transference of CSUK’s successful online vintage clothes ‘store’ to the high street.

In October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Can-Survive UK hosted its BOOBTIQUE event at Menagerie in Manchester. Guests were welcomed with a drinks reception and canapes whilst enjoying the opportunity to socialise, network and hear from inspirational women sharing their breast cancer journey and how they have moved forward with their lives. Marcella also spoke of her vision for CSUK Vintage, mentioning the different ways in which people can give support such as through sponsorship, donating clothing or volunteering time.

Reflecting positivity in its very name, this local charity, its leader and staunch trustees will doubtlessly continue adding to their accolades. In 2020 Can-Survive UK was recognised as Forever Manchester’s ‘Community Group of the Year’ and in 2023 Marcella gained acclaim with her Inspirational Woman Award ‘Community’ and Women of Worth ‘Outstanding Achievement’ awards.

“Our long-term aim for Can-Survive UK is to increase our services, ensure sustainability and grow to become a mainstream national cancer support organisation, leaving a lasting legacy,” concludes Marcella Turner.

Dr Jonathan Rajan

Pain can impact all aspects of our daily lives, from work and family time to hobbies and leisure activities. Now, thanks to rapid advancements in its management and treatment, debilitating pain is no longer something we have to simply accept.

At the forefront of this field and spearheading many of the innovative new pain treatments now available is Dr Jonathan Rajan, consultant in pain medicine and anaesthesia at The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, Spire Didsbury and the Orth Team Centre.

Dr Jonathan Ragan. Consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia, The Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle. FFPMRCA, FRCA, MbCHB, BSc (Hons), PGCERT (Med Ed.)

Advanced technologies and AI

“The treatment and management of pain, both chronic and acute, is developing incredibly quickly thanks to new technologies including more sophisticated electrical therapies and artificial intelligence,” Dr Rajan says. “We can help speed up a person’s recovery and prevent them from suffering long-term pain by using a multi-disciplinary approach with access to, and expertise in, a range of new, innovative interventions.

“Whether someone is referred to me from the NHS, their physiotherapist or whether they self-refer, I take a holistic approach to their pain, reviewing their medical history and all treatment to date.”

Holistic approach

Dr Rajan continues: “I can then determine a plan which could include scans and a combination of treatments from targeted pain medication to steroid injections, psychological support or interventions such as epidurals, pulsed radiofrequency techniques, root blocks and denervation treatment. The latter is of particular help to those unable to have traditional knee or hip surgery, such as the elderly, as well as those with back or shoulder pain.”

Radiofrequency denervation procedures are among Dr Rajan’s areas of specialist interest and expertise which also include the management of metabolic pain conditions, fibromyalgia, facial pain and complex regional pain syndrome.

Faster recovery

“Pain can have such a significant and detrimental impact on a person’s everyday life but there is always something we can do to speed up recovery and improve outcomes and quality of life,” he explains. “Technological advancements and our hands-on, multi-disciplinary approach to pain treatment, means that patients can get back to living and enjoying their lives far quicker.”

Dr Rajan, known as Jonny, who is originally from the North West, qualified as a doctor from Edinburgh University in 2006 and trained in both London and the North West. He says it was the developments in technology and the fact that it was one of

the few areas of medicine that combined all three disciplines (medical, surgical and psychological) which led him to specialise as a pain consultant.

“It was an area where I could combine my love of science and the arts with my love of people,” he explains. “Also, I've always found technology very exciting, and things were moving at an incredible pace in the field of pain medicine.”

Quality of life

“Increasingly, we can do so much more to help people whether that is enabling them to get back out on the golf course or tennis court or helping them to drastically improve their quality of life when dealing with a long-term condition,” he says. “New and ever-evolving techniques combined with other treatments can have someone out of discomfort and distress and active again in no time.”

Active family time

A keen tennis player himself who says he’d play every day if he could, Dr Rajan is a member of Bowdon Tennis Club where he can usually be seen on the court a couple of times a week. A car enthusiast and amateur photographer, he shares his life and home with his surgeon wife and two young children.

“Bowdon and the surrounding area have everything we could ask for,” he says.

“There is easy access to Cheadle and Manchester, the airport and the motorways as well as great schools and the beautiful countryside which we enjoy exploring with our dog, William.”

Standout skills

Jonny combines his specialist work at The Alexandra Hospital and Orth Team Centre with roles including being the vice chair of examinations for the Faculty of Pain Medicine at the Royal College of Anaesthetists and lead pain medicine trainer for the UK. He also has links with the Human Pain Research Group and is an honorary NHS consultant at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.

Among his standout clinical skills are cutting edge radiofrequency techniques for back pain, refractory knee pain and denervation treatments for patients who are not fit for surgery. He also offers platelet rich plasma regenerative medicine techniques for joint pain and muscle tears. In addition, he has acute pain medicine expertise and provides treatment for trauma and complex spines.

Experienced in pain management rehabilitation following injury, Dr Rajan is also an expert medical witness for personal injury cases involving chronic pain.

Positive outcomes

“A lot of pain is short term and can be treated and managed at home,” says Dr Rajan. “For mechanical pain, I would advise using the correct type and amount of over-the-counter pain relief and remaining as active as possible. Combine this with periods of rest, perhaps elevating a limb or using an ice or heat pack.”

However, he says that if someone is not getting relief from medication or their pain continues for a few weeks, assessment is required. With nerve pain, his advice is the sooner you can get treatment the better.

“Really, I just want people to know that something can be done about their pain,” he concludes. “They no longer need to grin and bear it. A better quality of life is attainable.”

Your questions about lumps answered by Mr Amit Kumar

I have a shoulder lump, what could it be?

Shoulder lumps are not uncommon. They can occur on the upper arm over the shoulder joint, in the armpit (axilla), over the outer end of the collarbone (acromioclavicular joint, ACJ) or over the inner end of the collarbone where it joins the breastbone (sternoclavicular joint, SCJ). The most common lumps

Should I be worried about a shoulder lump?

around the shoulder region are lipomas. A lipoma is a benign, fatty tumour that can occur anywhere on the body. Other causes of lumps or swellings around the shoulder region can be ganglions (cystic swellings from degenerate joints such as the shoulder joint, ACJ or SCJ), nerve sheath tumours (benign tumours that grow from the lining of nerves), and, rarely, sarcomas tumours (malignant tumours from soft tissue or bone). Lumps or swellings in the armpit (axilla) could be due to cysts or enlarged lymph nodes.

What are the features of a lump that I should be worried about?

Any lump which is increasing in

size, painful and deep to the soft tissues may be cause for concern. Harder lumps might also be more concerning than softer, compressible ones. The size of a lump matters, and any lump bigger than 5cm (golf ball size) should be investigated.

Can lumps be investigated and removed?

Most lumps can be investigated and assessed by a simple ultrasound. Occasionally, further investigations such as X-rays, MRI or CT scans may take place to get a clearer picture of what the lump is. Some lumps require a biopsy to determine what they are, while other small lumps can be excised whole during surgery and sent to

the laboratory for analysis. Not all lumps or swelling require removal but your surgeon will be able to discuss the treatment options with you. Very rarely the swelling will be directly arising from bone, thus investigation is key.

How would lumps on the ACJ and SCJ be managed?

Swellings around the ACJ or SCJ are usually due to joint degeneration, although occasionally they can be due to infection. The treatment of a swelling over the acromioclavicular joint or the sternoclavicular joint would be to treat the underlying cause, which most of the time would cause the swelling to go away. Adrenal Tumours

Mr Gulamhusein offers private management of adrenal conditions jointly with endocrine doctors and is one of very few surgeons with the expertise in open and robotic surgery to manage them.

What is the adrenal gland?

There are two adrenal glands, one above each kidney which sit in either flank. They are triangular shaped and approximately 5cm long and 2cm wide. They produce a variety of hormones which work as ‘chemical messengers’ in the blood stream forming part of the endocrine system.

What is the function of adrenal glands?

There are numerous hormones produced, the three main ones are:

Cortisol: this is a ‘natural steroid’ involved in the response to illness and helps regulate metabolism.

Aldosterone: this helps to maintain the body’s water and salt balance. This is important in regulating blood pressure.

Adrenaline: this is important in the management of stress situations, the ‘flight or fight’ response.

Problems related to the adrenal glands

Signs and symptoms are typically due to either under or over production of the adrenal hormones. These can therefore be related to blood pressure, metabolism, the immune system or features of stress. Many symptoms are similar to other illnesses making identification difficult.

Adrenal tumours

Adrenal tumours are typically found incidentally, and the majority are benign (non-cancerous). Adrenal cancer is rare but may present with the same symptoms.

Common conditions include:

Conn’s syndrome: caused by overproduction of aldosterone, commonly due to a small benign tumour of the adrenal gland that can lead to high blood pressure, typically resistant to blood pressure medication.

Cushing’s syndrome: due to excess cortisol, which can give rise to obesity,

diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and irregular periods in women.

Addison’s disease: secondary to hormone underproduction leading to low blood pressure, fatigue, weight loss, nausea, abdominal pain and low blood sugars. This can be life threatening.

Phaeochromocytoma: tumours characterised by over production of adrenaline, which causes very high blood pressure, headaches, sweating and a fast heart rate.

Investigations

The mainstay of tests involves the measurement of hormones in blood tests. Some can also be checked for in urine samples. Further investigations might include CT (computed tomography) scans or an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).

Treatment

Management is often multifaceted with drug therapy as well as surgery. You will be seen by a medical doctor called an endocrinologist and an adrenal surgeon. New patients are typically discussed in a multi-disciplinary meeting encompassing all the relevant medical professionals.

Medication is used to either supplement or suppress the hormones or manage effects of the hormones. Surgery offers an excellent option where there is a tumour found, either benign or cancerous.

Surgery

This can be either key-hole or an open operation to remove the adrenal gland or tumour. Most are amenable to a minimally invasive approach using a surgical robot. Depending on the indication this

allows for a short hospital stay and sometimes a same day discharge. A full recovery is generally expected in a few weeks and often means no further medication is required.

Eye health awareness

1. Eat healthily – maintain a good diet and lifestyle. Nutritional supplements can be useful, if you are in a higher risk category for age-related macula degeneration (AMD) ie family history, females, blonde, blue eyes.

2. Stop smoking – smoking significantly increases the risk of developing cataracts, AMD and vascular disease which can increase the risk of blindness.

3. Protect your eyes from the sun – harmful UV rays considerably increase the risk for developing cataracts sooner than later as well as AMD. Make sure you always wear good quality sunglasses with full UV protection and consider a polarised option.

1. The majority of eye problems have no symptoms in the early stages and routine eye examinations can pick up the early warning signs.

2. Treatment at an early stage can help to preserve your sight especially with young children and the elderly.

3. You only have one pair of eyes – eyesight is the worst feared sense to lose.

4. Just because your vision is good does NOT mean your eyes are healthy.

5. The eye test can pick up not only eye disease but serious general health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes or cancer.

4. Have regular eye tests – at least every two years and in some cases every year. They can detect not only early stages of eye disease but also serious general health problems. Some blinding conditions have NO symptoms in the early stages.

5. Prevent dry eyes – dry eye symptoms are more common in females and as you get older. Symptoms are dry, gritty, itchy, red, watery and tired eyes. Central heating, air conditioning and using the computer can make it worse. About 15% of adults aged over 40 suffer. Using lubricating eye drops, staying hydrated and having breaks from the computer can help.

an eye examination

6. Poor vision is dangerous and you could be driving illegally.

7. It's important to monitor changes in vision and your prescription as these could indicate health concerns such as diabetes.

8. For young people, poor vision can affect their performance at school as well as future prospects and development.

9. The optometrist will give you important advice on how best to maintain healthy eyes for the future.

10. An eye examination should form part of your general ‘MOT’ like a trip to see the dentist or doctor.

To promote the importance of regular eye tests and eye health, we are offering a complimentary eye test for Glossy Magazine readers for December and January 2025.

Simply scan the QR code which takes you to our website so you can book in and quote GLOSSY in the notes section to receive your complimentary private eye test.

The Importance of Regular Dental Check-ups

It is recommended by dentists worldwide to have a dental checkup every 6 to 12 months. Skipping regular check-ups can lead to undiagnosed oral health issues that may worsen over time, leading to costly and uncomfortable treatments. Regular exams are essential for detecting early signs of decay, gum disease, and other issues, saving you from potentially serious, painful and expensive problems down the line.

Ask the Expert

Dr Adam Haque

Dr Adam Haque is a vascular surgery resident, researcher and founder of Tomorrow Cardiovascular Wellness, the UK’s first cardiovascular wellness studio clinic. This follows his PhD which investigated methods to classify your health risk and how to prevent future problems. The Tomorrow Wellness studio provides advanced testing, insight and programmes to protect and optimise heart, vascular and general health.

Why is cardiovascular disease screening so important? Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide – put simply it’s the biggest threat to your health. It’s easily detectable, but it might not cause a problem until many decades later. If that problem is a heart attack, stroke, aneurysm or vascular dementia – why would you wait to find out? It’s preventable. If you know you have cardiovascular disease, there are many things you can do to prevent its consequences.

What can we offer you?

A consultation with a cardiovascular expert to understand your risk of heart disease

Here, he answers some common questions to help you feel more informed, supported and reassured about what to do if you notice this symptom.

What are the possible causes of blood in urine, and when should men be concerned?

Blood in urine can have many causes, from minor issues like infections to more serious things like kidney stones, or even prostate issues. If you have noticed blood in your urine, particularly if it happens more than once, if you notice pain or if you see a lot of blood, it’s really important

A medical grade body composition analysis to assess things like your fatto-muscle ratio and your phase angle (linked to anti-aging)

Vascular imaging of your body to look for evidence of cardiovascular disease and whether it’s causing any problems with blood flow – this helps determine whether we need to do anything about it Bloods – checks markers of heart disease and screens kidneys, liver and diabetes risk

Cardiopulmonary exercise test and stress ECG – a breath-by-breath and beat-bybeat analysis of your whole body at rest and under ‘stress’. Results include a scientific assessment of your VO2max,

the parameter most strongly linked to a long, high-quality life

Additional tests where needed, including echocardiography

How can this impact your life now and in the future? We provide a comprehensive report and individualised plan, to reduce your future health risk. Our membership programmes give you access to nutritionists, personal trainers and mental wellbeing experts to support you in making the changes that are needed. Ultimately, at Tomorrow Cardiovascular Wellness, we will optimise your health and make sure you are ready for whatever challenges lie ahead.

Dr Karim Ghabra

Dr Karim Ghabra is a highly experienced general practitioner at HCA Healthcare UK The Wilmslow Hospital. He has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating men’s health concerns and recognises that discussing urology concerns can be challenging for some men. One of the more worrisome symptoms Dr Ghabra sees in his clinic is blood in urine.

to see your doctor. As with all health concerns, it's always better to get it looked at early.

How is blood in urine diagnosed, and what tests might be involved?

Diagnosing blood in urine usually starts with a simple urine test to check for signs of infection or other problems. Your doctor might also recommend an ultrasound or a scan to get a closer look at your kidneys and bladder. Sometimes a small camera exam called a cystoscopy is done to check inside the bladder. Most tests are quick and help find the cause so treatment can

start if needed. We have a blood in urine clinic at The Wilmslow Hospital where men can be assessed.

Are there other symptoms that often accompany blood in urine that men should watch for?

Yes, along with blood in urine, keep an eye out for symptoms like pain when you pee, lower back pain, needing to pee more often or a burning feeling. These could point to things like an infection or kidney stones. If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t wait—getting checked can help prevent bigger issues.

Winter Sports Injury Clinic

This 2024/2025 snow season, more than a million people will leave the UK and head to the slopes. If you’re planning a trip, then you need to ensure that you take all the necessary precautions to try to prevent any accidents from occurring.

Although skiing and snowboarding are great fun, and provide excellent exercise, they can be dangerous, and injuries do often happen.

Every day during snow season, more than 1,000 UK residents get injured, with sprains, fractures and breaks being extremely common, so the OrthTeam regularly provides medical advice to many of these patients overseas and expedites treatment once they are back home.

It can be very daunting if you or a family member does get injured and are told that you/they need treatment for the injury. It’s important that you make an informed decision as to whether to have treatment abroad or delay it until you arrive back in the UK.

Our leading experts have put together a quick guide below to help you determine which injuries require immediate treatment and what can potentially wait.

Dislocations

This is when a joint comes apart and is extremely painful. The most common ski dislocation is in the shoulder. This injury requires immediate reduction of the dislocation at an urgent care facility abroad, however, further treatment thereafter can often wait.

Fractures

Open fractures are where the bone communicates with the skin through a wound. These require urgent attention abroad. Closed fractures, however, can often wait. Sometimes, if the bone is very severely displaced and out of position, it can be improved by manipulation under local anaesthetic abroad and placed in a plaster back slab to maintain a reasonable position. Definitive treatment can then be planned back in the UK.

Ligament injuries

Almost all ligament injuries can wait until you arrive back in the UK, but we recommend that you are assessed

urgently by a specialist on your return. The most common ligament injuries that occur on the slopes are to the knee and the thumb, with ‘skier’s thumb’ being one of the most common snow sports ligament injury.

Spinal and head injuries

Severe spinal and head injuries often require specialist assessment abroad. Always wear a helmet, and with children, consider a spinal support. These may prevent their head and/or spinal injuries from colliding into a solid object, such as a tree, and can also offer protection from being hit by another out-of-control skier.

Australasia Manchester

Australasia, a beacon of innovative dining in Manchester since 2011, is embarking on an exciting new chapter in its journey this winter. Having introduced the city to modern Australian cuisine, Australasia is set to unveil a refreshed menu celebrating a new wave of culinary creativity.

Australasia has always embraced the dynamic nature of Australian cuisine, which is richly influenced by a diverse array of cultures. The new menu continues this tradition, presenting a contemporary interpretation of the classic dishes that cemented the restaurant's reputation as a pioneer in premium dining in Manchester. The vision for Australasia was initially crafted by its founder, the late great Tim Bacon, whose personal experiences and deep knowledge of his homeland's cuisine informed the restaurant's identity. The original menu was a tribute to the bold flavours of Asian cuisines, drawing inspiration from Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and China. This latest menu iteration retains those influences but offers a fresh perspective that highlights the diverse food cultures that define Modern Australia. The new menu features dishes designed to delight and surprise diners. Expect vibrant flavours, locally sourced ingredients and innovative techniques that reflect the dynamic nature of Australian cuisine. Dishes such as Obsiblue Sashimi Prawns with mango puree and sweet ginger vegetables from the small plates, and Robata Grilled Barramundi with truffled celeriac puree, artichoke, cherry tomato and yuzu dressing from the larger plates section, showcase a commitment to excellence and creativity. Jeremy Roberts, owner of Australasia, shares his excitement about the restaurant’s new direction: “Today, Australia’s major cities are culinary hotspots where chefs artfully blend local ingredients with European techniques, creating a unique style known as Modern Australian. Our new menu is a testament to Australasia’s dedication to celebrating this exciting culinary evolution in Manchester. Inspired by the vibrant dining scenes in Sydney and Melbourne, we aim to offer a fresh perspective that celebrates the joy and diversity of modern Australian cuisine. “Since its inception in 2011, Australasia has been a trailblazer in Manchester’s ever-evolving restaurant scene, firmly establishing Japanese and Southeast Asian influences in premium dining. We have always been, and with this new menu we remain, committed to evolving and celebrating the essence of modern Australia.” Head down under to Australasia as they continue to push the boundaries of modern Australian dining. Experience the flavours, the creativity and the culinary journey that Australasia promises to deliver.

Kitchen @ Cloud 23

Hilton Manchester Deansgate’s smart champagne and cocktail bar is on the 23rd floor of the landmark Beetham Tower and accessed by lift from the lobby of the hotel.

We were invited to the exclusive Eros Lounge to review the sevencourse taster menu, which is only available on selected dates. I believe we were invited on one of the best nights of the year because we could see fireworks lighting up the sky, which made for a fabulous backdrop. After a warm welcome and our first glass of champagne, we were shown to our table for a delicious sevencourse meal, curated and served by two AA Rosette-awarded executive head chef Dave Ashton and the team. The taster menu is £95 per person and available for groups of two to four, with limited availability of just 24 settings. Wine pairings are also available for an extra £55 per person.

You can find the dates on the website and each set of dates will feature a brand new menu, to ensure that it’s a new experience every time. And believe me, once you’ve been, you’ll soon be finding a special occasion to return.

TASTER MENU

Fried Bun Sesame Seed, Duck Leg, Hoi Sin Beetroot Croustard Caramelised Walnut, Compressed Celery Thai Green Curry Cornish Crab, Tapioca Holygrain Sourdough Lancashire Cheese Custard, Marmite Butter BBQ Monkfish Tail Fermented Onion, Chive, Hen of the Woods Blue Cheese Tortellini Curried Squash, Pumpkin Seed, Sage Loin of Scottish Venison Venison Bolognaise, Red Cabbage, Blackberry Caramelised Bramley Apple Lemongrass Panna Cotta, Puff Pastry, Cardamom Ice Cream Valrhona 66% Chocolate Cremeux Sesame Tuile, Chocolate Shortbread, Sesame Praline Ice Cream.

I must admit, when we looked at the menu, we didn’t know what to expect, because of the culinary creative names, and did wonder how we were going to get through seven courses. However, each course was delicious, cooked to perfection and with amazing presentation. And there were also a couple of extra courses that weren’t on the menu, and they were just as tasty. All courses were served and explained by Dave Ashton himself, which was a special touch, and the wine pairings served by the very knowledgeable sommelier. A special five-star evening, which I would definitely recommend for a special night out.

Peter Street Kitchen

Nestled in the heart of Manchester’s bustling Peter Street, Peter Street Kitchen at The Edwardian Manchester, a Radisson Collection Hotel, brings an electrifying fusion of Japanese and Mexican flavours to the city’s luxury dining scene.

With floor-to-ceiling windows that offer chic views of Rudy’s and Albert’s Schloss, this award-winning restaurant boasts a sleek, modern aesthetic: soaring ceilings, pendant lighting, elegant marble tables, and tasteful wood accents, all served up by impeccably dressed waiting staff who introduce guests to the restaurant’s signature cocktails and exquisite menus with quiet expertise.

The experience is designed to encourage culinary exploration, all paired with premium wines, sakes, and handcrafted cocktails.

Following our server’s recommendation of six plates per couple, we took our time –cocktails in hand – contemplating the tempting array of dishes. The dining experience is dynamic, with dishes arriving as soon as they’re ready, in no set order, each one a burst of artistry and flavour.

Our culinary adventure began with Grilled Lobster Tacos adorned with chilli and cilantro (£18), a dish that quickly became a favourite. The procession continued with Crispy Filo King Prawns dipped in wasabi mayo (£16), delicately fried Prawn Tempura in ama ponzu (£16), and the exquisite Black Cod served with a spicy green chilli shiso salsa (£45) –a hearty portion we couldn’t resist finishing. The Stone Bass seasoned with Andean chilli lime sea salt (£24), skewered Beef Tenderloin cooked on a hot lava stone with habanero and jalapeño salts (£32), Roasted Corn with salted chilli and lime (£8), and a Chargrilled Cabbage Steak laced with jalapeño truffle butter (£12) rounded out our selection, each plate a distinctive twist on tradition. We enjoyed it all with

a crisp bottle of Nyetimber Classic Cuvée Brut NV (£80), adding a celebratory touch.

Beyond the main dining area, Peter Street Kitchen offers special experiences for those looking to elevate their evening. The Hibachi Experience, with its fiery ambience, is perfect for semi-private gatherings of up to 12, while the curated Omakase tasting menu provides an intimate, chef-driven exploration of the restaurant’s signature style across six unforgettable courses.

Peter Street Kitchen’s acclaim is welldeserved; recently voted ‘Best Culinary Experience’ by the British Restaurant Awards 2024, they continue to captivate Manchester’s dining scene, following previous wins in 2022 and 2019.

Luxurious, lively, and utterly delicious, Peter Street Kitchen delivers a dining experience that feels both exclusive and unforgettable. It’s an indulgence that’s well worth every penny – just don’t look at the calories!

Networking: the exchange of information...

Networking is the exchange of information and ideas among people with a common professional or business interest. It can be one benefit of joining a professional organisation, a union, or attending a trade fair or convention

Networking often occurs spontaneously when like-minded professionals and businesspeople cross paths, usually in an informal setting. People network to expand their businesses and social acquaintances, discover relevant job opportunities and increase their awareness of developments in their particular fields.

In stark contrast with their US contemporaries, many older Brits labelled networking ‘divisive, ingratiating and creepy’ despite its many successful outcomes. Luckily, 21st century folk are more realistic. They accept networking as necessary, if not intrinsic, to furthering professional, business and personal aims in order to achieve success on as many levels as possible.

Steve Kettle

Some people think that understanding the complexities of networking is important but, put simply, networking is just about meeting new people, engaging in meaningful conversations and offering mutual assistance.

The Curry Club

Steve Kettle is an expert networker who, since 1996, has been involved with the Curry Club and attracts over 40 guests monthly to Thursday lunchtime gatherings in local Asian eateries. Steve explains, “Networking fits my personality –it’s right up my street. I’m a people-person and love building companies, creating corporate events and connecting people. I’ve met thousands over the years and manage to remember nearly all their names! Originally, my Curry Club clients paid mainly in cash on the door. Now, we have a streamlined online pay-in-advance set-up. It’s a seamless business model and web-booking system which we have extended throughout the country.”

Steve’s Networking Tips

Don’t underestimate the potential of this business lunch –it leads to more business connections.

Prepare yourself, look smart, bring relevant literature, pamphlets and business cards. Make the networking event your business development day for generating new leads.

Arrive early to speak to as many people as possible during the pre-lunch hour drinks. Log other attendees’ details, cards and emails and the next day, follow up on everyone and everything you can.

Break all English politeness taboos and shout about yourself –without boasting. Be factual and confident in your manner, adding something like: ‘We’re honorable, we’re good communicators, we aim to deliver on time and are proud of how we do business.’

After the meal and meeting, note the date of the next event. Don’t rush back to the office but stay around for at least 20 minutes. You’ve greater chances now of connecting with the people you couldn’t meet beforehand.

Steve shares: “It’s easy for me to encounter new people but some folk are nervous and find it hard breaking into a group already engaged in conversation. Therefore, we try to soften it for them.”

Lyn Cutler Women in Business Brunch Club

Alderley Edge ten years ago, a random chat with pals led bubbly Lyn Cutler set up The Edge Events, a cutting-edge events/PR company. Three years on Lyn added a new side to her business and from a ladies who lunch to a rebrand “Women in business brunch club” Lyn had no inkling that within seven years, its membership would multiply tenfold from 70 to a whopping 700!

Since 2018, over 80 predominantly female business owners have attended Lyn’s glitzy, five-a-year brunches in carefully selected Manchester city centre venues. And they, in turn, relish the extra footfall – so it’s a win-win!

All these networking events benefit from Lyn’s extensive experience in hospitality, PR, event management and her desire to create only the most memorable of occasions. It’s no surprise these gatherings have spawned long-lasting friendships and stable work partnerships for independent women more accustomed to operating in business alone.

Lyn comments: “Our events offer an experience as well a relaxed yet elegant and vibrant vibe! We offer pre-lunch cocktails, mocktails and nibbles before great food and, occasionally, entertainment too. To me it’s all still magical! Our events provide women with a platform to support other women, and also the opportunity to showcase their own services and brands. On the day, my team and I ensure no-one feels left out. We introduce anyone looking slightly at a loss to others as it could be someone’s first time out alone at an occasion like this.

“As for networking – it’s a given. Think about it! When you’re out for a coffee with pals, you all invariably discuss your work. And whenever you’re at a function, a ball, or any big bash, you nearly always end up handing out your cards or QR code. This is networking and it’s quite upfront and acceptable. Yes, networking has become a part of everyday life.”

Relationships:

Ward Hadaway's renowned family law partners look back on 2024 from a personal and professional perspective, and reflect on how their life has always given them added insights into their challenging and emotionally sensitive work

L: So - here we are Christine, the end of another year. How many years does that mean you and I have been divorce lawyers?

C: Well, for me 46 years and I think you are 32 years – so that’s 78 years altogether!

L: We've seen some things in that time –haven't we?

C: Yes – no matter what is going on in the world, people are always going in and out of relationships for all sorts of reasons. And some really need help when it all goes wrong.

L: And not just the legal advice, is it?

C: No – when you have been doing the job as long as we have you build up such a wealth of knowledge which extends way beyond purely legal advice. That’s our real value I think. We have such a wealth of experience about how people behave during a relationship break-up, we can really support our clients in making sense of what they are going through. Of course, we use the law to achieve their aims, but it's really important to recognise when a more practical, or emotional, approach might work better – and that’s something that only comes with lived experience –which you and I have in abundance.

L: It’s a constantly changing job which is what keeps it interesting for me. We have to constantly adapt to how society and people’s lives are changing. Speaking of which, we've both had big changes ourselves recently. You have become a grandma for the first time?

C: Yes - in the summer of 2023 - a granddaughter. It brings with it so many different feelings but it's wonderful and we see a lot of them. My son and daughterin-law are so happy, but it has made me reflect on all the children's proceedings

I've been involved with; shared care arrangements; contact proceedings and of course grandparents trying to see their grandchildren. And you've got married of course!

L: Yes – for the second time. I've been divorced myself – and whilst it hasn’t put me off getting married again, it did take me 15 years to take the plunge for the second time! I've inherited two stepsons, and my husband has inherited a stepdaughter. So we have faced all the same issues as many of my clients with children, as well as extended families. We have worked hard as a couple over the years to bring the family together. And everyone is now in a really good place. The wedding was lovely, with all 3 children playing a role – I had my daughter as a bridesmaid and David had his eldest son as his best man. That made for an interesting speech! I think you are very lucky if you find someone in your twenties who you can spend your whole life with. The pressures of modern life are enough to test even the strongest relationship, aren't they?

C: I agree, I think I have been lucky –I have been married since 1979.

L: What's the secret?

C: – He is a chef! I can highly recommend marriage to a chef. He understands highpressure jobs don’t just happen between 9 – 5, and I always have my dinner cooked for me! We eat out a lot too which is a great chance for us to talk as a couple, which is so important.

L: Any particular favourite restaurants?

C: Well we are always keen to try new places, but we do have our favourites where we are looked after very well. Cibo in Hale is always excellent and so welcoming. It's always nice to be

personally greeted when you arrive somewhere. Eating out is very expensive these days, and to feel welcomed and appreciated by a restaurant is more important than ever.

L: A bit like our clients I think. It's important for them to feel that we are fully invested in their situation and that they aren't just another file in the cabinet.

C: – Yes – but I think you and I do that naturally, which is why we stay friends with so many of our clients. People share their whole lives with you when they are getting divorced – everything that matters to them. It often creates a really close connection, which often develops into a friendship.

L: I certainly have friends now who I met when I represented them. It's lovely and makes the job really rewarding. It’s a real vote of trust.

C: So what are you doing for Christmas this year?

L: Well, for the first time we might be child-free – all our children are in settled relationships and there is potential for them all to be with their in-laws. It's not quite finalised yet but if it does turn out that way then David and I will likely take ourselves off for our third honeymoon of the year somewhere hot. What about you?

C: It will be with the family. Having grandchildren brings back the magic to Christmas.

L: And then we will be back at our desks in January to see what 2025 has in store.

The Bolton School Girls’ Division senior la crosse squad has secured victory in the Northern Schools’ Championships for the seventh year in a row. Some of the Year 13 girls in the squad have won this tournament, and the title of Northern Schools’ Champions, every year since they started playing la crosse in Year 7! Their victory marks the first time that Bolton School has achieved such an extraordinary run of success over consecutive years. This year’s Northern Schools’ Championships was hosted by Queen Margaret's School in York. The Bolton School team faced fierce competition from Birkenhead School in an intensely competitive final. The match ended in a draw at full time and remained level even after extra time, leading to a thrilling ‘golden goal’ scenario. A goal from a free position at last secured Bolton School’s victory.

Girls’ Division PE teacher Miss Andrea Donaghy, who coaches the team, said:

Bolton School lacrosse team wins Northern Schools’ Championships for seventh year running

“The team’s perseverance and focus under pressure paid off, making their exceptional seven-year achievement even more special. Their consistent dominance in the Northern Schools’ Championships is a testament to the team’s dedication and skill, setting a new standard for future squads. Congrat ulations to everyone involved in the squad!”

The Northern Champions squad was made up of Year 13s Emma Arnison, Anna Brennand, Gabriella Giambattista-Hunt, Molly Grimshaw, Maya Guhathakurta, Alexia Howarth (Captain) and Pip Nuttall, Year 12s Ella Clarkson, Lily-Grace Greer, Eva Hurst and Sienna White, and Year 11s Scarlett Bowie and Bella Shannon.

The high standard of lacrosse in the Girls’ Division continues with regional and national selection for a large number of players. Six students have been selected to join the Girls’ National Lacrosse Academy: Year 13 students Emma Arnison, Molly Grimshaw, Alexia Howarth and Pip Nuttall, and Year 12 students Lily-Grace Greer and Sienna White. These players have been recognised as some of the most promising talent at Regional Academy level, and their

Ready for the real world? How work experience can give you the edge

Sixth form is about more than just exams –it’s about exploring life beyond school and figuring out what’s next. Work experience is a powerful way to do that. It helps you discover what excites you in a future career –and just as importantly, what doesn’t. Long gone are the days when work experience was making tea and sorting the mail! These days companies are offering placements designed to give hands-on experience be cause they recognise the fresh talent and unique insights young people bring.

As head of sixth form at Cheadle Hulme School, I’ve seen our students dive into all kinds of industries, including Premier League football, top law firms, quirky startups and working at major live music events at Coop Live.

Here are my top five reasons why work experience can make all the difference:

1. Get a sneak peek into the real world

It’s one thing to read about a career, but it’s a whole other story when you’re actually there. Work experience throws you right into the action, letting you see how things work day-to-day, from sitting in meetings to getting involved in projects.

2. Boost your confidence

Stepping into a professional environment can be a bit nerve-wracking at first, but by the end, you’ll be sharing ideas, and surprising yourself with how much you’ve grown in just a week.

3. Discover new skills

From teamwork to problem-solving, you’ll gain practical skills you can use in any future career. These aren’t just for your CV – they are important life lessons.

4. Figure out what you want (or don’t want)

A key benefit of work experience is that it lets you try out a role to see if it’s a good fit, or if it helps point you in a new direction.

exceptional performance has led their invi tation to join the National Academy programme. This Talent Pathway is the route for any individual lacrosse player who aspires to play for the Under 19 and Senior England lacrosse squads.

A total of 16 Bolton School students have been selected for the U18 Lancashire County Lacrosse Squads this year following final trials in October. In addition, three girls were chosen to captain the ‘A’ Team: a significant achievement both for the students and the school.

On the Lancashire A Squad are Year 13s Emma Arnison (Captain), Anna Brennand, Molly Grimshaw (Captain), Alexia Howarth (Captain) and Pip Nuttall, Year 12s Lily-Grace Greer, Evie Morris and Sienna White, and Year 11 Scarlett Bowie. On the Lancashire B Squad are Year 13s Gabriella GiambattistaHunt and Maya Guhathakurta, Year 12s Elise Brown, Ella Clarkson, Hannah Faulkner and Tia Fitzgerald, and Year 10 Gabrielle White. These players went on to take part in the Northern Counties Tournament on Sunday 10 November at Moreton Hall School in Shropshire.

5. Make connections that matter At Cheadle Hulme School, our amazing network of parents and old Waconians (as we refer to our alumni) opens up incred ible opportunities for our students. These placements often lead to long-term connections, with some students even landing future internships.

The King's School’s 1st XI cricketer, Joe Moores, has been selected for the England Men U19s training squad in South Africa

The squad will train in Stellenbosch from 25 November to 16 December as preparation for the upcoming series against South Africa Men U19s in January and February 2025.

The Year 11 King’s pupil, who also plays for Macclesfield Cricket Club, earned his first call up to the national U19s in the summer, against Scotland and Ireland in a tri-series in which England completed a clean sweep. Now he will spend some time over the winter in the southern hemisphere playing on faster wickets with more bounce.

Joe had a stellar season for Lancashire Academy and The North, his 139* (in just 79 balls) batting for the North U18s against the Midlands going a long way to securing his England selection. He has been referenced by Michael Vaughan on Test Match Special as “a young man to watch”. Joe hopes to be part of the young generation of England

stars which includes Vaughan's son Archie, now playing for Somerset, and Rocky Flintoff, son of iconic all-rounder Andrew (Freddy) Flintoff, now playing for Lancashire. Both Rocky and Archie will also be on the tour to South Africa.

Joe is incredibly modest about his prospects: "I just want to play at as high a level as pos sible, take one step at a time and do my best wherever I play. It has been a big step up, obviously, from school cricket to playing for Lancashire Twos, but I enjoy the challenges and I’m looking forward to touring with England under-19s, where I can continue my cricketing education.

"I've always had great coaching from my school and club, but it's been good to work with the coaches for the North, Lancashire and England teams as well as to learn more about physical training regimes and diet."

Leadership Lunch

On Wednesday 25 September 2024, members of the Senior Officer Team from The Manchester Grammar School (MGS) welcomed the Head Girl Teams from Man chester High School for Girls (MHSG) and Withington Girls’ School (WGS) for a ‘Leadership Lunch’ at MGS. The concept of service and giving back to the community is a key part of the ethos at all three schools, deeply embedded in their histories.

School Captain Jack from The Manchester Grammar School said: “Whilst indulging in a lovely sandwich buffet in the school’s Ar chives Room, we began to organise a series of inter-school events for the 20242025 academic year. Including potential hockey, netball and rounders tournaments, which will be spread out across the three terms – each school will host one of these events. We also planned three non-sporting competitions: a Christmas karaoke night, a University Challenge-style quiz and a friendly debating match. These events will not only enable us to foster an even stronger working relationship between the three schools, but they will also provide us with the opportunity to raise money for charity and to further promote the

phil anthropic ethos that has always been central to MGS life.

Head Girl Arabella from Withington Girls’ School said: “We would like to extend our thanks to The Manchester Grammar School for kindly hosting a Leadership Lunch, where the respective leadership teams met to discuss exciting plans for the year ahead. Among these plans, we are set to host inter-school sports tournaments in hockey, netball and rounders, with each school taking turns as host. We will also be hosting a debate and a University Challenge style competition. These tourna ments, I am sure, will encourage friendly sporting rivalry and intellectual jousting whilst also serving as a platform for raising funds for charity.

“Our Head Girl Team will be looking forward to further collaborative efforts, ac ademically, in the sporting arena, from a charitable perspective and socially. As neighbours, I feel there is much to be gained from further integration at all levels throughout the school. I am hopeful these events will provide a platform to achieve this.

Head Girl Eva from Manchester High School for Girls said: “In light of the recent

King's head of academic PE, Peter Langley, who coaches the school’s first XI alongside former county cricketer A.J Harris, said: "Joe is powerful and highly entertaining and plays with an attacking intent which suits the modern 'bazball' era. Teams don’t know where to bowl at him. He hits the ball through a 360-degree wagon wheel, with his ramp, scoop shots and reverse sweep among his favourites. That said, I've not seen him get over-excited and those shots are always well practiced and executed."

Leadership Lunch, we would like to thank the MGS School Captain team for inviting us to their school. It was a very productive lunch and we greatly enjoyed meeting the Withington Head Girl Team.

“The meeting fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas with prospects for f uture joint events, from sport to music to aca demic. Everyone was encouraged to suggest their ideas and visions for collabo ration and the discussion was lively and promising. We also shared our experi ences in being on the head teams at our respective schools and we believe this will be very beneficial in further developing our own leadership styles. Looking ahead, we are excited about the possibilities before us. We are enthusiastic about the potential of joint events, which will enrich our experiences and strengthen the bonds be tween our schools.”

Stockport Grammar School pupils enjoy excellent expedition to Vietnam and Cambodia

At the end of the summer term, 13 sixth form pupils at Stockport Grammar School embarked on a three-week Outlook Expedition to Vietnam and Cambodia. Their adventure began in Hanoi where they explored sights like Train Street and the Ngoc Son Temple before their trip progressed into Cambodia where the students took part in a four-day trek in Ratanakiri Province.

Here the team experienced sleeping in jungle hammocks and cooling off in waterfalls. In the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, the team also volunteered with Free the Bears and helped to care for rescued wildlife.

The expedition provided the pupils with the opportunity to explore new places, as well as gain vital leadership and life skills. All pupils within the team took on various roles

Meet Withington’s New Head of Junior School

Ellie Clark joined Withington Girls’ School as the Head of Junior School in September. Here, she shares what drew her to the role, the benefits of a Withington education and her aims for the Junior School.

“Growing up in Manchester, I was always aware of the school’s excellent reputationboth academically and in areas like sports, music and the arts. Withington’s well-rounded approach to education aligns perfectly with my own educational philosophy. It’s not just about delivering exceptional academic results but also de veloping confident, well-rounded young women who are prepared for the future.

I’ve found the atmosphere in the Junior School to be warm, welcoming and familyoriented. The teachers go above and beyond,

not just academically but also in terms of pastoral care and nurturing the girls. Overall, it’s a hive of activity, with a genuine buzz and enthusiasm for learning from the girls.

Our pupils benefit from such a wealth of opportunities, from world-class facilities in areas like science and the arts to the broad and rich curriculum we deliver. It’s not just about the exceptional teaching but all the other experiences that help develop the whole child.

I aim to build on the school’s existing strengths and continue to deliver an excep tional educational experience for our girls by further developing our diverse curriculum. I’m also passionate about build ing their confidence. Ultimately, I

during the expedition: managing finances and budget, arranging accommodation, organising transport and leading communications, as well as updating social media. This range of responsibilities allowed the pupils to develop leadership qualities and enhance their ability to collaborate ef fectively under what were sometimes challenging conditions.

want each girl to leave the Junior School feeling empowered, with a love of learning that will stay with them throughout their educational journey and beyond.”

The deadline to apply to sit the Junior School entrance assessment on Saturday 18th January 2025, for entry in September 2025, is Monday 9th December.

GADGETS OF THE SEASON

IN THE deep midwinter, rather than simply handling the cold and the dark, it can be a real pleasure to embrace and enjoy them. Here’s a selection of the latest technology to help us really get the best out of chilly conditions and long nights.

Knog Plus twinpack lights

My first rule of winter is never to let conditions force me indoors. But for safety’s sake when you’re out, you have to be lit up like Las Vegas. Even in daytime, if you’re out running, cycling or dog walking under January skies, you need to be visible. This minimal, USB-rechargeable, multi-mount front and rear light set can clip to a belt, strap to a bike or helmet, or dangle from a dog lead, and its ultra-bright flashing LEDs might just save your life. £35, knog.com

Apple Weather app

This is a piece of tech that any Apple device user can get for free, and it’s a seriously powerful tool for anyone that’s planning to leave the house this winter. Outdoor folks will remember fondly the weather app Dark Sky, so they’ll be delighted to hear all its functionality has been integrated into the latest version of Apple Weather. It’s popular for its hyperlocal forecasting and super accurate tracking of small periods of time, so you can really pinpoint exactly when the briefest break in the rain is likely to happen.

Lifesystems handwarmers/power pack

A hand warmer is always a nice thing to have while out and about in the cold. It’s a very simple concept, yet this one still manages to pack in a load of unexpected extra features. First, you can separate the unit into two halves, one for each hand. Second, it has adjustable heat settings to balance comfort with battery life. And perhaps most impressive of all, you can charge your phone from it. Since phones and other electronics die much more quickly in cold conditions, this is a bonus you might find yourself using quite often.

Lumie Sunrise Alarm

Another simple concept, beautifully done here for a pleasingly low price. I can’t help but think no matter how much we evolve, some humans naturally just can’t handle getting up before sunrise. I’m one of them, so I’m very tempted by this tactile avocado-shaped table lamp, which wakes you up naturally by simulating a sunrise: gradually flooding your room with natural looking light over a 30-minute period before your alarm goes off. Simple and effective. £49, johnlewis.com

STARGAZING

THIS AUTUMN my youngest daughter told me she wanted to go stargazing. She’d seen it on JoJo and Gran Gran on Children’s BBC and asked me to take her –neither of us having ever done it before – and to cut a long story short it is now my latest obsession.

First of all, I found out to my delight that there are dark sky sites (areas where light pollution doesn’t ruin the experience) all around this region. We elected for a field adjoining Delamere Forest on a cloudless night and we weren’t disappointed.

Weather conditions and tranquil location secured, next we needed to suss out what to bring and how to prepare. Obviously warm clothes are a must, as you’re lying motionless on the ground on a cold night so think what you’d normally wear and double it.

Then you’ll need a picnic blanket or groundsheet to lie on, and a blanket to wrap up in. And finally, you’ll need to prepare your night vision. Scientists tell us that it can take a full half hour for human eyes to truly adapt to darkness, during which time you should avoid looking at any light source, especially

your phone screen, unless it’s on Night/ Dark Mode to filter out blue light exposure.

That last part is particularly important, because the right mobile app is the best way to fully enjoy the experience. There are loads of stargazing apps available, so I selected Star Walk 2, on the basis that it’s been recommended as “best for beginners”.

Even on the free version, there’s so much to explore. At the tap of a button, you can activate an augmented reality viewer of the sky, overlaying what you can see with 3D illustrations of the constellations. There’s also up-to-date news on what to see from your exact location at any given time.

We quickly found Vega, the brightest star in the sky that night, and from there we identified the northern constellation

of Cygnus (the swan), with its prominent asterism known as the Northern Cross, and around it the bordering constellations of Lyra and Lacerta (the harp and the lizard).

Amazingly, and completely by surprise, we saw what we thought was an aeroplane flying from south to north at very high altitude, but which turned out to be something far more special. It was flying too high and fast to be a passenger plane, plus it was a single white light rather than coloured or blinking. Then we saw another, then another, numbering perhaps 20 at regular but rapid intervals, following in a straight line. A training exercise of military aircraft? Some sort of extreme drones? A quick check of the app confirmed that we were witnessing the Starlink satellite train, doing their rapid low-altitude orbit of the Earth as they climbed to their eventual 550km up.

And just like that, we’re hooked. I’m immediately scouring the internet for the next astronomical events and planning the next trip out.

“THIS IS GOLD, MR BOND”
ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM GOLDFINGER

TO CELEBRATE 60 years of James Bond films, Rolls-Royce has released the ultimate villain’s car: a one-of-one long wheelbase Phantom referencing Auric Goldfinger’s 1937 Phantom III Se danca de Ville from the 1964 film Gold finger

Incorporating some of the most extensively engineered and hand-crafted, bespoke features ever produced, including touches of solid gold throughout, this incredible and unique luxury motor car has been rumoured to have a value of up to £6 million – however we’re assured it’s not for sale as it’s already been snapped up by a mystery owner right here in the UK.

The Rolls-Royce motor company would never use a word so vulgar as “marketing” but that’s exactly what this is. A brilliant PR stunt, to grab headlines all over the world by announcing a car so special that nobody can even buy it. It’s certain to cement the reputation of the Phantom as quite simply the luxury car in a class of its own.

The Goldfinger promises to be the car-spotter’s ultimate target, and to make it unmistakable even to the untrained eye, it includes a masterful finishing touch: the prized British numberplate AU 1,

the chemical symbol for gold, which graced the Goldfinger Phantom III in the film.

On the outside, the car is finished in a never-to-be repeated, two-tone design that reflects the yellow hue of the Bond villain’s original. On the inside, there are details galore to delight fans of the film.

A total of three years of continuous development was required to bring each of these elegant and playful bespoke features to life –from a complex “sculptural gallery” (the passenger side of the dashboard to you and me), inspired by the famous scene filmed on the Furka Pass, to a gold golf putter mounted to the inside of the motor car’s boot, recalling the club used by Auric Goldfinger during his first encounter with James Bond.

Rolls-Royce seldom, if ever, reveals details so banal as horsepower, top speeds, 0-60 times etc – because its customers rarely care about such things – but make no mistake, a car like this exudes effortless, limitless power.

Fact file

Engine: 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 / CO2 emissions: 345 g/km
