Since the origins of the development of the rail lines, in Milan as in other European cities, the inseparable relationship between city and railway has led to changes in the urban and territorial form. The railway lines have integrated and shaped the urban fabric but have also created new limits and boundaries within the city. The railway infrastructure has called for the creation of spaces for its operation, spaces that have gone to make up the current airports. The provision of services to the residence, the distribution and articulation of human activities, the typological solutions and the related conformation of the aggregates starting from the relationships between public spaces, collective spaces and private spaces are factors that contribute to defining the quality urban of the places, where the intervention fits.

Urbanity is the most effective and civil guarantee of security and, in this context, the re-qualification of the habitat under the banner of re-humanization must be pursued: cities of civil coexistence must be armed, giving utmost importance to the infrastructures of sociality, such as hinges of the civil estate of the social and settlement fabric. Being in a lower position than the historic centre of Milan, the rivers and canals have lapped this neighbourhood for centuries even though many of them are now underground. The design idea also takes strength from this duality between the presence-absence (physical) of the channels by creating water collection points that serve both as an accumulation for rainwater.
It is clear how the residential fronts stretch along the direction of this street, inclined by 55 ° N, until it crosses the railway, thus creating a real graft where the fronts intersect with each other; the older residential fronts follow the Via Emilia while the more recent industrial fronts unfold perpendicularly to it, standing orthogonally with respect to the railway line. The project originated from this intersection, a grid that recalls the existing intersection bringing it inside the airport through a connection between private and public spaces such as to guarantee a permeability that allows the success of the project. The name of the project takes its cue from this story to reconnect past, present and future in order to allow the railway yard to be a point of new beginning that allows the regeneration of the urban fabric through residential construction with shared spaces.

Social housing is characterized by innovation policies that seek an answer to housing needs by creating places for the community that guarantee a close relationship between public and private spaces. This is thought of as a remedy for housing inequality and the creation of a social mix. In particular, the project pays particular attention to urban redevelopment and energy saving. The accommodations are designed to comply with the high energy efficiency building standards and the permeability of the spaces allows for participatory co-planning of the community. The residences are designed to have a mix between co-housing and premises to be rented at an agreed fee, in particular university students were thought of as possible users given the great attractiveness of the Milanese universities.

As high performance design is becoming more desirable in the field of architecture, the need for supporting architects with environmental analysis tools is also growing. Rhino/Grasshopper is one of the most widely used platforms that are used by designers today. There are already a number of environmental plugins developed for Rhino/ Grasshopper.
Embodied Energy / Carbon Calculator Because of their complexity and due to convention, embodied energy calculations are never really part of a structural engineer’s range of services during the initial design phase. If considered at all, they will only be calculated for building evaluation, once the design has been more or less set. But wouldn’t it be great if these calculations can be embedded into the concept design phase, so that the architects, engineers, and owners can really understand the impact that their design might have on the environment, and use this understanding to design a better and more environmentally responsible building? After all, embodied energy is an important contributor to the lifetime energy consumption of highly efficient buildings, and of those that have life spans of a century or less.

- Carbon Calculator: Conduct highly integrated analysis to understand the embodied and operational carbon footprint of your project. - Renewable Energy: Simulate the performance of photovoltaic to offset energy demands or demonstrate net-zero feasibility. Include battery storage and variable electricity pricing in your analysis. - Sun path and Shadow Analysis: Visualize sun angles and shadows to highlight passive design opportunities and site impact. - Multizone Energy Modelling: With a fullyfledged UI, automatic adjacency detection, and interactive results. - Dynamic Shading: Apply real-world shades and dynamic glazing product.
Driven Selection System The building and construction industries determine, by and large, how residents interpret their surroundings and built environment. As such, it is vital to re-engineer our cities and towns to correspond more directly to the natural landscapes they inhabit. By reconfiguring how we think of such spaces, architects, engineers, planners, and contractors can create buildings that generate their own energy, and wean buildings off the fossil fuel economy. Create buildings that generate more energy than they use, capture and treat all water on site, and are made using healthy materials.
- Annual Glare: Assess glare from hundreds of viewing positions, for every hour of the year, all in a matter of seconds. - Spatial Thermal Comfort: Compute highly resolved annual spatial comfort maps to reveal local thermal comfort issues early in the design process. - Electric Lighting: Easily place and edit luminaries, calculate illuminance levels, create visualizations, and determine lighting power loads. - Advanced Natural Ventilation: simulation and visualization detailed energy and mass flow through a multi-zone model. Pressure Coefficients can be auto-calculated or provided as an envelope mesh from CFD simulations.
Parametric Design Method The scheme design is not only the first step of the architectural design, but also a crucial decision-making phase that contains all the design requirements and mobilizes all the design elements. In this phase, it will basically determine the building shape, space, skin and other parameters which are expressive and concerned by the designers on the one hand, and essential factors for the building energy consumption on the other hand. The research shows that 57% of the energy-saving technical measures should be considered in the scheme phase. With the constant development in the design progress, the potential of energy saving becomes smaller and smaller, while the costs become higher. Spatial Thermal Comfort Urban climate is determined by a city’s spatial structure, block texture, building form, open space layout, and so on. Urban climate influences building cooling and heating loads, and outdoor thermal comfort, then influences the building performance, and it is therefore one of the most significant factors considered in urban design. Sustainable urban design plays an important role in the improvement of the urban climate, pointing to the need for more climate-responsive environments. In particular, urban morphology can influence the urban climate with different morphological parameters and exhibit more intense heat islands and lower permeability of urban air ventilation. Therefore, urban morphology in the design phase has become an important ecological factor in high-density and high-intensity urban development, gradually becoming the focus of architects and planners. Local decision makers and researchers are also focusing on implementing engineering methods to optimize the thermal performance of urban blocks.

At the time of the purchase, the space still presented the typical twentieth-century subdivision with many rooms served by a distribution corridor. The strategy of the project was to adapt the house to the contemporary lifestyle of the young owners through large and fluid spaces while retaining some elements that recall the original character. Restrained colours, elegant simplicity of shapes, materials, and nuances compose a space that offers freedom, comfort, and purity. Columns in the central social area is supplemented by the comfy modular sofa arrangement attached to this specific architectural feature. The prevailing white, wood and blue entwine in the colour palette and the shining polished concrete floors that go throughout the main areas, give the space enhanced light feel.

The five-story structure with an adjoining one-story annex occupies the maximum area of the narrow plot. The area facing the street in front has trees and greened parking spaces. The ground floor accommodates flexible commercial uses and is oriented toward public space. A shared garden at the back can be accessed via staircases from the flats above and from the terrace of the annex. Each of the three stories above contains a 2.5 and 3.5 room unit. The spacious accommodation on the top floor is setback and consists of 3.5 rooms front to back. In addition to a central stairwell, a lift provides direct access to the flats. The below ground level contains storage areas for both residents and commercial tenants as well as a common laundry room and a small flat for

guests. In addition to suitability for seniors and a view of the lake of Zurich, important factors for the clients included shared spaces, outdoor areas for the flats and direct access to the garden. The distinctive shape of the rectangular building is defined by the arrangement of the annex on one side and balconies jutting out to the south and west – somewhat like a windmill. To ensure spaciousness the ground plans are open in design. Full height sliding doors connect the rooms along the façade, each of which provide different outlooks. The central kitchen unit and wall closets resemble room dividers and structure the floor plan. Oak flooring and exposed concrete ceilings throughout emphasize the loft like atmosphere. The balconies, stairs and wings of the floor-to-ceiling, oak-framed windows are fitted with perforated railings.

In all living areas can be enjoyed the warm atmosphere of the natural oak parquet and bathrooms are equipped with aesthetics tiles. A kitchen-related reduit, built-in cloakrooms, electric slatted blinds, electric awnings in the attic apartments, as well as washing machine and dryer offer a high quality of living.
All bedrooms face the quiet park side and are connected by a projecting balcony. The living rooms extend through the apartment, facing both east and west and giving onto the park-side balconies. Within the smaller Brunnenhofstrasse building, the living rooms are positioned along the façade and look onto the park to the south and southeast via adjoining balcony areas. In the four-story north- and south-facing part of the building, the eat-in kitchens are connected to the living rooms on the south side, while in the angled part of the building the kitchens enjoy the evening sun. A circuit-like layout grants all apartment types spaciousness, freedom of movement for both children and adults, and enhanced flexibility of use.

What does ‘feel at home’ mean? Peace, intimacy, wellness perhaps. Quality and technology helps architecture to achieve an urge for high-quality dwellings. Opening towards nature, slower daily rhythms. Nature can now embraces every space, during day as well as during night-time. Housing complex, immersed into countryside but just a few minutes from city-centre, is designed for who choose independence, comfort and peace. Four independent units linked from a common space as entrance for complex, gives a new way to life near to city.

ENCLOSURE How can Ca’Tron Palace be a civic centre up-todate with the multitude of changes involved in our high-speed world? The aim of the project is to give a new identity, anew life starting from existing configuration, the historical sedimentation of passing time. Resolving the ambiguity restoring the main entrance (now closed) despite actual second access give new life to inner garden, a rare treasure enclosed inside brick walls. Just bringing back things as they were: building was design to work as a centre for commerce, for products imported from all over the world, for people. The linear connection between inner court and Canal Grande, from earth to water, as deep root in Venice’s dichotomy.

Final Proposal - Visualization into a 90°degrees rotated view of exterior courtyard
Refurbishment and new construction throughout usage of robots and robotic process applied to architecture. Control of the robots was achieved by utilizing the program ABB RobotStudio 6.03. An advantage of this strategy is that we were also able to simulate many fabrication options with confidence that the robotic moves were extremely accurate compared with what would happen in the real process. Due to this, many issues were avoided while still in the digital stage and opportunities were able to be recognized and tested with minimal risk, which benefited the overall fabrication efficiency.

The idea was not only a “slow food” restaurant but a meeting point for locals and tourists, a place to rest and disconnect in the heart of the city. A place where you can spend hours, working or relaxing, listening to music and enjoying good company. The inner part of the restaurant, the floor and the ceiling are at a lower level, this allows to create a homely and cosy space. The interiors are based on the contrast of natural materials’ texture and warm hues like painted sheet metal and bricks, sand and olive green. The outcomes are several different nooks, each one for a different occasion.

For its design, inspiration came from terraces and gardens of place, clam and relaxed spaces, spontaneous and full of vegetation. In these patios, usually can be found an extraordinary mixture of textures and colours, typical of the inner spaces, private and enclosed: rough bricks, ceramics, concrete, worn paint and tiles. Colourful inflatables with their ironic and funny force, placed upside down from ceiling, add a young, modern and light touch to the interior.

Starting from the concept of abstraction in relation to the subject, and the loosing of meaning of representation. To the isometric drawing, the most complete form of representation that allows to observe a cube in the largest number of faces at the same time will be associated at the use of model to become a unique form of representation. Obtained independence of the object from the subject, designer has the ability to activate a process, with different method from the normal criteria for the composition. The process can be called de-composition process, if it is possible to create a hybrid speech among cultural references.

New Spaces for a Market The creative push is towards what Einstein calls “space as box”. Space as an instrument of individual and community emancipation, which reflects and challenges society to stimulate renewal. In the philosophy of Plato, the cave is a place of passage from the world of things to the world of ideas, a path that allows access to “higher” knowledge. Boxes that contain objects; boxes that contain other boxes and multiply the container; boxes that open and close; boxes that turn into something else. Design is not a game but allows you to play: with shapes, spaces, materials and colours. What is inside dialogues with what is outside and the cultural relationship between man and nature becomes visible. “Perhaps with all that we have discovered, we end up discovering nature again”.

Food, market, bar and Romans ruins- view from interior promenade
addictive / subtractive Design starts from the idea to start a dialogue with the pre-existent building, a relation based on two basilar concepts: complexity and contradiction. Choosing ‘flying’ brassed escalator to connect the three different levels: Purpose was to integrate silently new form hosting different and various public functions without competing with existing building. Brassed metal is chosen to relate to the existing architecture and its surrounding area in contrast with typical materials and ruins, witnesses of time passing. Considering the site as a cavern (or empty space to fill with different functions) as a bounding box to use as container for new functions and spaces open to public. Italian typical market will take place inside of this wonder-box.

De-Pot is a new landmark! De-Pot is a new point of interest for the city! De-Pot is a container! It’s a container in its industrial meaning; it’s a container because it hosts sports and leisure activities. De-Pot is a Sport Factory! The project is located in a context of historical and architectonic interest: Fort of Villiers. The best way to preserve the past is recycle it for the present. The project wants to consider the act of recycling as a value: as heritage, Fort of Villiers is an act of recycling of the present; as “waste material”, the container is an act of recycling of the future.

Fort de Villiers hides his relevance underground. The first step starts from the clear identity of the existing court: the void is a trace in which the volume of the project can be wrapped around. Therefore, the new volume embraces the court, preserving the existent, for evaluated the Fort, adding a new layer that gives new opportunities to the area. The final shape is conceived as a modelling of the “courtyard building”: by pulling one side down and lifting the opposite one up, the volume is a continuous sloping green promenade, connected to the landscape and inspired by the character of the park. Subsequently, a new series of smaller volumes – created from the container unit – follows the old path of the galleries, generating a venue through which temporary events and leisure facilities can take place.

Complexity / Contradiction Enchanting space around as a distance to journey, nothing defined, nothing definitive: this is freedom. Perception is freedom only if people perceive clearly with deep interest and curiosity. Architecture is here thought as a journey, described by a story that end into museum - at the highest point of Capo d’Orso. A series of buildings, place along the path, moving curiosity and enhancing the perception of this unique location. Concept moved looking for a formal freedom within contrast between elements: old and new materials, forms. All to guarantee a meaningful respect toward nature and its power, leading actor of this site. Otherwise perception is conceived by means of natural elements such as light.

The museum long and thin volume evokes a ships wake, indomitable companion in journey.

“Castel Sant’Elmo is a medieval castle, today used as museum. Located on the top of Vomero’s hill, in Naples (Italy). Named as ‘Paturcium’ during Romans domination, was built as appeared today where since X century can be traced the church of Saint’Erasmo (from Eramo to Ermo and finally Elmo). This massive building (the biggest in Naples), grow up from rock (yellow turf of Naples). For its unique defensive position, during the years the castle was a very attractive war objective: from its position (+250 meters over see level) is possible to control easily all city of Naples, its gulf, all the road arriving from or departing to the other cities.”

The columns and beams were modelled using “beam” elements, an element used typically to model long and slender members which usually have constant, compact cross-sections. Force tensions were applied by using a load-pay technique which axially shrinks the constrained string elements and in so doing tensions it. The model of the frame was held to simulate as closely as possible its connections. It was found that the mass and centre of mass of the model were very close to those of the actual surveyed giving a great deal of confidence in the geometric accuracy of the model. 0.939

FEM Model The detailed finite element model of the existing structure frame was built and solved using Strand7. The complex geometry of the castle and underground volume frame was modelled using over 10000 “thin shell” plate elements. The various colours of these elements in the model designate sections of different thickness. Regions of rapidly changing shape and thickness and where the stress gradients are likely to be high, are modelled with many small elements to capture accurately the structure’s performance.
The brief of ‘underground RE-USE’ was to transform the underground spaces of the Saint Elmo Castle in Naples, plus its water-cisterns. Firstly was request (by Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities) to analyse seismic reaction of existing structures, and after that to formalize a proposal for re-using this underground space. New theatre is placed inside core of castle, encapsulated into a journey starting from low level, ascending throw sky-opened spaces or darken rooms, ending into the two huge water cisterns excavated into turf (extracted material was cut into blocks and used for external building, atop open plaza). Visitors are suspended between different stimulations for sense: light and dark, opened and closed spaces, small and huge volumes. 22.726 6.305

As part of the study order, an architectural one is to be built for the school and sports building on Arenenberg Expression can be formulated, which does justice to the building and the place in the overall context. The angular structure characterizes the historical axis from the east the main entrance to the castle and seminar hotel and affects the spatial situation in the eastern part of the park. In addition to attracting access from the east, there is the volumetric training of the atticas are of central importance. The starting point for us is a “homogenization of the design elements”. Without the building its identity to try to take the appearance of the school wing design with precise interventions upgrade and thereby give the building ensemble an attractive face on all sides. © kga architekten

Project begins from morphological comparison between historical examples of piazzas at same scale: Padua’s Eremitani, Piazza delle Erbe in Vicenza, Valdobbiadene. Driving from results, design aims to giving back harmonious feeling to inhabitants. Carefully carving proportions inside piazza’s space, for a ratio between its span (or length) and buildings’ heights; proposal is centred of a construction of new colonnade, as reminiscence of Italian tradition of enclosing public space by covered elements. Columns are intentionally over-dimensioned to emphasized public role and social aim in designing the new open space. To solve traffic problem and different vehicular flows, project proposed to cut-off traffic from new plaza, relying one-way circulation only on north and south.

A vital aspect of the design process is the ability of the architect to develop a building design based on the feedback they receive for each iteration. Photo-realistic rendering can add immense value in terms of visual information that can be digested, used, and thrown away if necessary to make the end product the best it can be. Photo-realistic renderings are often created at either end of the design process (to win competitions or to sell a project near its completion). However, investing in that feedback loop and introducing photorealistic renderings throughout the process gives the design a chance to grow, get better, and be more complete in the end.

The Basilica of Sant’Andrea is a Roman Catholic co-cathedral and minor basilica in Mantua, Lombardy. It is one of major works of 15th-century Renaissance architecture of Northetn Italy. Commissioned by Ludovico II Gonzaga, the church was begun in 1472 according to designs by Leon Battista Alberti on a site occupied by a Benedictine monastery, of which the bell tower (1414) remains. The building was only finished 328 years later. Though later changes and expansions altered Alberti’s design, the church is still considered to be one of Alberti’s most complete works. It looms over Piazza Mantegna. The nave is roofed by a barrel vault, one of first times such a form was used in such monumental scale since antiquity, probably modelled on the Basilica of Maxentius in Rome.
