By Per Svendsen Ukiortaami pilluaritsi – Happy New Year. I take great pleasure in presenting this year’s stamp programme to those of you who collect the postage stamps of Greenland. Changes As usual we will be issuing 24 new stamps over the course of the year, but only four souvenir sheets and, for the first time since 2008, we are reducing the price of our Year Pack. One final change is that we have stopped issuing mini sheets. The two mini sheets we issued about a year ago are, therefore, the last ones of their kind. 21st January 2019 The Salvation Army in Greenland is considered a most worthy beneficiary of the proceeds from the sale of this year’s additional value-stamp. Maria Panínguak’ Kjærulff is the artist who created this stamp design. As always, this annual stamp will be issued as a full sheet, a souvenir sheet and in a beautiful souvenir folder. There are also Arctic deserts in Greenland. This phenomenon is illustrated on two attractive stamps, the first of which will be issued on 21st January. Pierre Auzias from Uummannaq is the creator of this stamp issue, which is printed in offset. Naja Rosing-Asvid’s informative series about ’Greenland during the Second World War – as seen by Greenlanders’ is now up to the fourth of its five issues. The two new stamps in this series are printed in combined offset and laser etching. Once again, Martin Mörck is the artist undertaking the engraving. Both stamps will also be issued in an attractive souvenir folder. In 2017 we began our series entitled ’Abandoned Stations in Greenland’. Artists Sissi Møller and Lisbeth Karline have now each created a beautiful design that are being reproduced on the final two stamps in the series. Both stamps are printed in offset. Martin Mörck’s attractive series about ‘Fish in Greenlandic Waters’ continues with two more stamps. These stamps will also be printed in offset. 21st June 2019 ’Old Greenlandic Banknotes’, illustrated by Bertil Skov Jørgensen, is another series that will be continued in 2019, in the format of another two stamps, to be issued as both full sheets and souvenir sheets. Combined offset and laser etching will yet again be chosen for the printing. The year’s EUROPA stamp theme is ’National Birds’. Naja Abelsen is excellent at depicting animal images. Therefore, she was entrusted with the task of drawing these stamp designs, which will be printed in offset and produced as full sheets plus as a self-adhesive booklet containing six of each of the two EUROPA stamps. Our Definitive series depicting Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark will continue with another value. Martin Mörck’s striking portrait of our Queen, based on a photograph taken by Court Photographer Steen Brogaard, will be printed in combined laser etching and offset. ’Old Residential Houses’ is the theme chosen for this year’s Sepac series. The small European postal opera-

tors’ network therefore continues its stamp issuing collaboration to allow collectors to obtain all of the year’s Sepac stamps in one special folder. This will be released in September. The artist who will design POST Greenland’s 2019 stamp in this series will be announced at a later date. On two previous occasions we have issued postage stamps to commemorate the inclusion of areas of Greenland on Unesco’s world heritage list. We are now continuing this tradition, as Unesco last year added the nature area of Aasivissiut-Nipisat in western Greenland to this same prestigious list. Julie Edel Hardenberg has created the beautiful image that adorns this stamp. It will be printed in offset. In 2009 Greenland became self-governing. We are, therefore, commemorating the tenth anniversary of Greenlandic self-rule with a special stamp, created by highly-regarded artist Aka Høegh. The stamp will be issued on 21st June, our national holiday. 10th August 2019 The UN international day of the world’s indigenous peoples is commemorated each year on this date. In 2019 we shall celebrate this special day with another stamp. We look forward to announcing, at a later date, which artist will be creating the design. The stamp will be printed in offset and issued by subscription on 21st October. 9th October 2019 We shall be commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first International Post Day established by UPU - the Universal Postal Union - with a creatively designed stamp. This will be designed by multi-artist Miki Jacobsen. This stamp will also be printed in offset and issued by subscription on 21st October. 21st October 2019 The next two stamps in our series about ’The Environment in Greenland’ will be created by a Greenlandic artist who has never previously designed a postage stamp and we look forward to revealing the identity of the artist at a later date. As with the previous four stamps in this series, these latest stamps will be printed in offset on self-adhesive paper. Both stamps will be issued as full sheets. Coal bag tags played an interesting role in twentieth century Greenland. We look forward to expounding upon this historic theme, which Miki Jacobsen has so beautifully interpreted in two stamps to be released on this date. Both stamps will be printed in offset and issued as full sheets. Our two 2019 Christmas postage stamps depict two classic themes, but in a new way. We very much look forward to revealing the secret during the Autumn. For the same reason, the name of the artist will also remain secret until the stamps are launched. As always, the stamp year will be rounded off with our popular Year Pack, which will contain all 24 postage stamps and all four miniature sheets. As mentioned in the introduction, we shall be reducing the price of this popular collectors’ item for first time since 2008. We hope you will enjoy our stamps and we wish you all the best for 2019.

This is where we leave the platform to the Salvation Army’s chief editor, who will tell us more about the organisation’s charity work among Greenland’s socially marginalised.

In 2015, Salvation Army majors Kurt and Helle Pedersen assumed responsibility for this task. “Being homeless is tough anyway, but being homeless here is particularly dangerous”, says Kurt Pedersen.

We are once again focusing on a social cause when we issue the annual additional-value stamp on 21st January. Greenland’s 900 homeless live under harsh conditions. The Salvation Army’s ‘warm space’ in Nuuk is, therefore, a popular gathering place for Greenland’s vulnerable. ’Willam’s Café’ is the framework for the Salvation Army’s ‘warm space’. Free breakfast and inexpensive lunches are available and there is often a long queue.

Maria Panínguak’ Kjærulff is a graphic artist who is best known for her large paintings and drawings. She grew up in Nuuk. In 2005 she took a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Nova Scotia College of Art & Design University. She also completed an artistic séjour in New York in 2009.

In April 2018, a documentary called ’Northern Lights’ presented a unique view of the conditions experienced by Nuuk’s homeless and vulnerable. This film shows the fruit of the collaboration with the authorities and highlights the Salvation Army’s objective of bringing a real ’Northern Light’ to places that are otherwise in the dark. After only three years, there was so much enthusiasm about the work that was being done by the Salvation Army that they had grown out of their premises. Arctic deserts – new series By Pertti Frandsen
This may sound like a contradiction, but it is actually true. Not only does Greenland have lots of ice and snow, but it also has deserts; Arctic deserts. There is actually less precipitation in North-Eastern Greenland than there is in the Sahara, so the term ’Arctic desert’ is in no way an exaggeration. One of these Arctic deserts is located near Uummannaq, north of Disko Bay. Getting there means sailing out from Uummannaq harbour, passing the icebergs in the fjord, where birdlife, seals and sometimes even whales can be observed. Once you get there,
you have to walk into the landscape to roam this very unusual area. The Arctic desert is an incredible mineral landscape, where sulphur and iron-rich minerals crumble into yellow sulphur. There are many unique stones, some of which are estimated to be more than 1.5 million years old. This is the first of two stamps depicting Arctic deserts in Greenland. The final stamp in this series will be issued in 2020.

About the artist Pierre André Camille Auzias, alias ”Peeri”, was born in 1954 in Lyon, France. He is a painter, illustrator, teacher and travel writer. He is very interested in world nature and society. He presents themed exhibitions from the various countries he has visited over the years. His first trip to Greenland was in 1994 as a Royal Marine Painter; a job he held until 2016. He moved permanently to Uummannaq in 2006, where he lives with his partner Annie Kerouedan, a chief physician. He has completed several kayak expeditions. He dog sleds, fishes, traps and creates his art. This is Pierre Auzias’ second stamp commission for POST Greenland since his stamp debut in 2013.

Greenland during the Second World War. Part Four By Pertti Frandsen
When the war ended, the paper was for a while re-edited from Denmark by editor Christian Vibe. The Greenland Post stopped being published in 1950 but, in 1952 it was merged with Atuagagdliutit and became AG, a dual-language publication that is still published once a week.
Radio
Greenland began radio transmission in 1926 from Godhavn, from where 45 minutes daily news and ship positions were broadcast. As time went on, most settlements had smaller radio transmitters. In 1929, Godthaab received a similar radio transmitter, with Julianhaab receiving theirs in 1931. The flow of news was somewhat limited, however, and there was no real underlying structure. In the middle of the 1930s, both national councils had expressed wishes to expand the use of radio as a means of disseminating information.
We have now come to the fourth and penultimate part of the series ’Greenland during the Second World War – as seen by Greenlanders’. Artist Naja Rosing-Asvid from Nuuk designed all the stamp images. Norwegian engraver and illustrator Martin Mörck undertook all the engraving. This series, comprised of 10 stamps, is printed in combined offset and laser etching. Stamps 7 and 8 in the series will be issued on 21st January. The series will be completed in 2020, 75 years after the end of the Second World War.
Newspapers
For the duration of the war, the people of Greenland were increasingly able to hear and read about what was happening in the outside world. In terms of newspapers, news dissemination at the beginning of the war came from the ’Atuagagdliutit’ paper. This newspaper had been started by Inspector Rink as far back as 1861. The newspaper was distributed throughout Greenland but did not publish actual news. When Denmark was occupied, the short press telegrams via the Agency for Greenland stopped being issued. As an initial reaction, national bailiff Aksel Svane issued a daily press release, based on what could be heard from long wave radio transmissions from Sweden, Great Britain and the United States.

The news was translated into Greenlandic and sent to the individual colonies. Eske Brun, the other national bailiff, later wrote in his memoirs about the basis for the establishment in 1942 of a second newspaper, Grønlandsposten (The Greenland Post): ”A small society like Greenland is of course […] plagued by rumours that spread up and down the coast, which are known as the ’Kamik Post’. I wanted there to be a Danish newspaper to counteract this.” The first issue of the Greenland Post was published on 16th March 1942. This was a Danish language newspaper, so its initial readership was Danes in Greenland, but Danish-speaking Greenlanders saw just as much benefit from the paper, which thus became a link between Danes and Danish-speaking Greenlanders.
In 1941, newspaper editor Vibe was also given responsibility for radio transmissions. The flow of news began on 5th January 1942, with the words “Radio Greenland – Godthaab – at 475 m. Here is the radio news programme, with the latest news!” Only very few Greenlanders understood a language other than their own and thanks to the news broadcasts they could now hear news and informative programming in Greenlandic. Thus, the Greenlandic community was able to get closer to the rest of the world. In the beginning of 1945, the radio news had two components. There was one part with news that had been transmitted from London and America and another featuring news from Denmark. But only the first part was translated and put up on notice boards, so that the whole population could stay informed.

After the war, it was expressed that there was a desire to have the news from Denmark translated. National Council member Søren Kaspersen said, “during this time, the people of Greenland feel a need to hear news from Denmark and because I consider this need to be an expression of cohesion between these two countries.”
Sledge patrols and weather stations
In any war, weather reports are extremely important information. Both the Allies and the Germans were, therefore, very interested in establishing a weather reporting system in North-Eastern Greenland. During the first period after Denmark was occupied, nobody had considered encoding the weather reports from North-Eastern Greenland, but in July 1940 the Norwegian government-in-exile that was based in London and the British authorities agreed to send a ship to Greenland, carrying codes for use in these reports. In 1941, the North-Eastern Greenland Sledge Patrol was established, with the aim of showing the world and especially the United States that Denmark was trying to use Greenland as a means of contributing to the war against Nazism and the liberation of Denmark. The idea behind the creation of this unit was most likely to have been Eske Brun’s belief that it was better to fight and lose, than to offer no resistance whatsoever. In addition to patrols, the task of the Sledge Patrol was to observe and transmit weather reports to the Americans. The most spectacular action that the Sledge Patrol was involved in took place in the Spring of 1943. Members of the Sledge Patrol discovered German activity on Sabine Island, after which the commander of the patrol, Captain Ib Poulsen was ordered to obtain as much information as possible about this activity. As part of this mission, Corporals Eli Knudsen and Marius Jensen were sent out to warn Corporal Peter Nielsen, who was unaware that he was heading towards the Germans. Meanwhile, the Germans launched an attack on one of the patrol’s bases, which meant that the patrol had to divert southwards, initially to Ella Island, then South towards Scoresby Sound. The patrol that had been sent out managed to reach Peter Nielsen before it was too late but fell into a German ambush while on its way back, during which Eli Knudsen was killed. Marius Jensen and Peter Nielsen were both taken prisoner. Nielsen was able to escape, however, after which he joined the group at Ella Island.
Marius Jensen was forced by the Germans to show the route to Ella Island. He showed them a very difficult route, however, after which he was, according to some accounts, able to overpower the remaining German, Lieutenant Hermann Ritter. Marius Jensen then headed off on his own towards Ella Island to warn the team about the impending attack. When he arrived, the station had already been cleared and he returned to the place where he had left the German and declared that Ritter was now a prisoner of war. He then headed off on the three-week trek to Scoresby Sound, a journey of hundreds of kilometres. In the Greenland Post, Eske Brun also expressed his joy and pride in the actions of these fellow Danes in the war against Nazi Germany. In a radio broadcast from London on 13th June 1944, it was reported that the American foreign ministry had expressed its admiration to Ambassador Henrik Kauffmann for the three members of the Danish sledge patrol: Captain Ib Poulsen, Sergeant Marius Jensen and the deceased Eli Knudsen. All three were awarded service medals by the United States Government, in recognition of their actions. During the war, fifteen meteorological stations were set up in Greenland in collaboration with the United States military. These stations were partly manned by Greenlanders, who transmitted weather reports back to the Americans. In this way, the battle to prevent German expeditionary forces to North-Eastern Greenland was able to save the lives of many thousands of British troops. Weather reports from North-Eastern Greenland were also used in the planning of the D-Day operations in Normandy in June 1944. There was another front, where six Greenlanders also contributed to the liberation of Denmark, as members of the Danish resistance. All six had been held up in Denmark due to the war. The Sledge Patrol of North-Eastern Greenland was disbanded at the end of the war. Five more years would pass before the area was once again patrolled by Danish military units. ’Operation Resolute’ was set up in 1950, with a very low profile. But in 1952, the Sirus Sledge Patrol was set up, which continues to this very day with headquarters in Daneborg. The unit patrols North-Eastern Greenland, enforcing sovereignty in the region. Abandoned Stations – Part III By Allan D.I. Streymoy and Pertti Frandsen These two stamps form the third and final part of our series of six postage stamps, focusing on the historical narrative that the abandoned stations in remote locations in Greenland are able to tell us today. To tell the tale of the abandoned stations on the stamps, we have allied with partners, which include Greenland’s National Museum & Archives and two artists: Sissi Møller and Lisbeth Karline. By Sissi Møller “For me, as an artist, it has been a very special assignment to play a creative role in this series about abandoned stations. It has been an exciting process for me to engage in these designs about these stations. DYE2 is located on the inland icecap and is comprised of this large sphere, that stands as a simple monument to itself. I think this image is very important, because it is a part of our shared history from not all that long ago.“ By Lisbeth Karline “Loran station ‘Angissoq’ is rather special to me. In his time, my father built Hotel Tupilak in Nanortalik back in the 1970s and he told me many times about this station and how impressive it was. During my work on this stamp, I found the ‘Angissoq Loran Station, Grønland’ Facebook group, where I was sent greetings for my father, which I managed to pass on before he died. Unfortunately, he never got to see the stamp as his sight was impaired. If you can dedicate a stamp to someone, then I would dedicate this to my father, Ole.” Radar station DYE-2. Established in 1960 and decommissioned in 1988. The former DYE-2 radar station is located at 66° 29° 30° N, 46° 18° 19° W. approx. 2,300 metres above sea level. DYE-2 was a large operation. At its most active, the station was manned by a crew of 60.
About Sissi Møller Sissi Møller was born in Sisimiut in 1984 and grew up in Nuuk. She trained at the Nuuk School of Art and Copenhagen School of Art and currently lives in Copenhagen. She has, in particular, worked with large format abstract paintings. In her work she very much enjoys the communication of atmosphere. “Atmospheres are subjective and this is where I think my work is able to stand on its own terms, also in the future. The blue colour holds a very special place, both for me and in my work. I also work with graphics and sculpture. I am at my best when

DYE-2 was an important position strategically as it was part of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) radio network. In Greenland, the DEW line consisted of DYE-1, located a short distance outside Sisimiut, DYE-2 and DYE-3, which are also located on the Greenlandic icecap, further to the East, and DYE-4, which is located not far from Kulusuk in Eastern Greenland. The chain of radio stations was active in the period from 31st July 1957 until the end of the 1980s. The development of submarines that were not only armed with nuclear missiles, but also powered by nuclear reactors escalated the arms race to a new level, as a surprise attack against the American mainland would have been unable to prevent submarines from taking retaliatory action. The United States began its Polaris submarine programme in the second half of the 1950s and the first successful missile launch from a submerged submarine was fired in June 1960. Missile range was limited, however, to about 2,000 km, which meant that submarines had to sail to the Norwegian Sea or the Mediterranean Sea to be in range of targets inside the Soviet Union. Missile accuracy was a central and complicated issue that was resolved through extensive engineering development programmes. One of the mechanisms that made this possible was the Loran C radio navigation system, which was introduced in Greenland with the construction of the ’Angissoq’ Loran C station near Nanortalik in 1963.

After high school she attended Nuuk Art School and continued her creative studies at Aarhus Academy of Art from 2005 to 2009. She has produced a number of stamps for POST Greenland, including the very popular and still widely-used set of four postage stamps depicting female Greenlandic national dress, which was issued in January 2016.

Fish in Greenlandic waters – Part II By Pertti Frandsen In May 2018 Greenland’s latest two stamps in the Nordic series were issued. The theme was ’Fish in the Nordic waters’ and our two Nordic postage stamps from last year depicted mackerel and herring. From and including this year, POST Greenland is continuing its fish series on its own. The series is, therefore, being retitled ’Fish in Greenlandic Waters’. There will be a total of ten stamps in our fish series. The artist commissioned to create all the designs in the series is the legendary Martin Mörck. He found inspiration in the fish designs from his youth, when he worked with fish both at sea and ashore. Martin’s many visits to Greenland spanning two decades, with countless boat trips, hunting and fishing both summer and winter have strengthened his understanding of Greenland’s marvellous fauna.
There are over 260 species of fish in Greenlandic waters. It was, therefore, a challenge to come up with a short list of only ten species. To do this we found the best available advice and expertise. All fish in our fish series were selected in collaboration with Pinngortitaleriffik – the Greenlandic Institute of Nature, in Nuuk. The two species that are depicted on the two new fish stamps are Blue Whiting and American Plaice. The Blue Whiting is long, slender and shiny, with a violet hue. It has an underbite, three dorsal fins, a long front pelvic fin and a dark lateral line high up. The Blue Whiting also has black gills and mouth cavity. It has a diet of animal plankton, squid and small fish. The Blue Whiting is widespread in Southern Greenland where it lives a pelagic life in large shoals, at depths of up to 3,000 metres. Normally, however, they
swim only in waters of 100 400 metres depth. Blue Whiting are widespread in the North-East Atlantic, along the West coasts of Europe and in the Western Mediterranean. The American Plaice is a right facing flat fish. This means that its left eye is horizontal on the right side of the fish. The right side (or eye side) is reddish-brown or grey, while the blind side is white. The fish also has large, coarse scales and a relatively large mouth. It has a diet of sea urchins, brittle stars, worms, molluscs, crustaceans, fish fry and small fish. American Plaice are very common in South-East and South-West Greenland as well as in the more Northerly waters of Upernavik and King Oscar’s Fjord, respectively. The species normally lives on soft sea beds at depths between 10 - 400 metres. American Plaice are also widespread in the waters of Labrador and Newfoundland, as well as the waters off Iceland and North-Western Europe. About the artist

Martin Mörck, was born in 1955 in Gothenburg and is an artist and engraver of stamps, banknotes and portraits. His native language is Swedish, but he is actually a Norwegian citizen. After studying shipbuilding and art, he began an apprenticeship as an engraver in 1975. Since then, he has had over 600 of his engravings reproduced on postage stamps, mainly for the postal services in the Nordic countries, but also for countries such as France, Monaco and Canada, China and the USA. Since his first stamp for Greenland in 1995, Martin Mörck has designed the images for or has engraved over 100 postage stamps for POST Greenland.

NEWS from POST Greenland New date postmark for settlement Greenland’s southernmost settlement, Narsaq Kujalleq, has been renamed. Narsaq Kujalleq is now known as Narsarmijit. The local postmark datestamp is, therefore, being replaced. This will take place on 21st January 2019. Successful stamp fair in Copenhagen By Pertti Frandsen During the first weekend of November, POST Greenland took part in last year’s biggest Danish stamp exhibition, the annual ’Stamps, Letters and Post Card Fair’ in Copenhagen. The good and spacious atmosphere of the ground floor of the Scandic Hotel by the lakes in central Copenhagen was the place where collectors from especially Denmark, Northern Germany and Sweden came together to see, exchange, buy and sell postage stamps from countries all around the world. Once again, the latest Greenlandic stamps were a hit. Collectors of Greenlandic stamps visited our booth from start to finish to buy, learn and talk to us. Several new faces also took the opportunity to take out Greenlandic stamp subscriptions. What was most popular with collectors, however, was our new 2018 Year Pack. But also the new, fragrant stamps, created by Ivínguak’ Stork Høegh,were well-received, and got a lot of attention. We also had another popular attraction this year. Diagonally opposite our booth, fishing boat captain Niels Olsvig from Ilulissat exhibited interesting extracts from his extensive stamp collection. The collectors who looked at his framed exhibits seemed impressed by the numerous Greenlandic stamps, Niels Olsvig has faithfully collected since his childhood.
