f you love our planet you’ll be interested to know that it’s Earth Day on Wednesday (22 April), when people all over the world will celebrate ways to look after the planet, such as cutting down on plastics, planting trees and protecting wildlife. You might be young but you can make a big difference by getting involved! This year, Earth Day celebrates its 50th anniversary. The theme is Climate Action and we’re all being encouraged to play our part in slowing down global warming. Even small changes, such as unplugging TVs and phones, eating more meat-free meals and walking or cycling instead of using cars, can help to turn the tide. Because of the coronavirus outbreak, Earth Day isn’t only an opportunity to care for the environment – it’s a time to care for people! Communities worldwide are experiencing challenging times. We all need to stay at home and stick to social distancing rules to help protect each other. You could also commit to joining us to pray every day at noon for people impacted by coronavirus. Why not make a phone call, send a message or write a letter to someone who is feeling sad or lonely? It will probably make a world of difference! You could also mark Earth Day by drawing or painting a picture about caring for people or the planet, or writing a poem about nature or animals. Email your cool creations to us at kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk and we will publish them in Your Space on pages 14 and 15.

There's a globe hidden on every page of this week's comic. See if you can find th em all!

It’s happened! I’ve finally turned into my dad. With my family spending more time at home, I’m constantly shouting, ‘WHO LEFT THIS LIGHT ON?’ Turning off lights we’re not using is one small thing we can do to help make a big difference to our planet. Talking about big differences, I was encouraged to read how the amount of CO2 that’s being pumped into the air has fallen because fewer people are using their cars and travelling by plane. What a difference it would make if we kept using our cars less once we’ve got coronavirus under control. I’ve also been encouraged to hear how people are choosing kindness by checking in on others. Asking someone if they’re OK and if there’s anything they need might seem like a little thing to do but it can make a real difference. What can you do to make a difference this week?

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT JESUS’ PRESENCE IN OUR LIVES

Jesus Is Always With You

T

here might be times in life when we think we are on our own and nobody cares – not even Jesus. Sometimes we might even convince ourselves that Jesus doesn’t exist. These may be times when we’re alone and feel scared or confused. That’s the cool thing about this week’s Bible story – it reminds us that even in confusing and scary times Jesus is alive and he’s walking right beside us! In the cartoon Bible story, a couple of Jesus’ followers were walking and talking about the scary and confusing events that had occurred over the previous days. Jesus started walking with them and

says Nathan Bright

spoke to them but they didn’t realise it was him! It wasn’t until Jesus joined them for food and did something his followers had seen him do before – break bread – that they recognised him. This is how it can be in our lives too. We can be going about our everyday lives without realising that Jesus is right there with us. However, it’s important for us to remember that Jesus is with us all the time. This week, let’s try to be mindful of Jesus’ presence in our lives. He really is alive and he’s interested in everything we do!

Selected verses from

Psalm 19

The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you.

Have you ever been blown away by a stunning sunrise or sunset? Maybe that’s how David felt when he wrote this psalm. As he gazed at the heavens he realised that God was real and powerful! David’s song of praise reminds us that everything God has created tells a story about how awesome God is. All you have to do to ‘listen in’ is to look up!

The heavens tell about the glory of God. The skies announce what his hands have made. Each new day tells more of the story, and each night reveals more and more about God’s power. You cannot hear them say anything. They don’t make any sound we can hear. But their message goes throughout the world. Their teaching reaches the ends of the earth. The sun’s tent is set up in the heavens. It begins its path across the sky like an athlete eager to run a race. It starts at one end of the sky and runs all the way to the other end. (Easy-to-Read Version)

Dear God,

Thank you for creating this beautiful world. When I look at everything you made, help me to see how awesome, powerful and beautiful you are. Help me to take care of our planet as well.

Here are some gobsmacking facts about practically everything, to boggle your brain or wow your mates…

Jupiter’s moon Io has more than 400 volcanoes with about 150 erupting at any given time! That makes it the most volcanically active body in the whole solar system. Io is one of many moons that orbit Jupiter. The moon gets squeezed and stretched as it’s tugged around by the gravitational pull of the planet and its moons, causing Io’s inside to heat up and volcanoes to erupt.

Learning through fun at home Lots of you will be off school at the moment as most of them are shut to try to stop the spread of coronavirus. While you’re stuck at home you might be struggling to keep entertained. So we thought you might appreciate some ideas to keep you busy during this challenging time. They’re all easy to do at home and link in with the subjects you might have been learning in school.

Grab some sticky notes and write the numbers 1 to 20 on them – one on each sticky note. Stick them to a door in a random order. It needs to be somewhere there aren’t any breakable things around, so ask your parents or guardians first. Read each of the sums below and try to work out the answer as quickly as possible. When you know the answer, throw a small beanbag at the number on the door. You can play with other people you live with to see who is quicker.

Unfortunately this summer’s Olympic Games have been postponed until next year. But that doesn’t mean you can’t bring some Olympic fun to your home! Here are two marvellous ideas you can do using masking tape!

Bring a winter Olympic sport into spring by using masking tape to create a curling rink. You’ll need a hard floor for this, such as tiled, wooden or laminate flooring. Use the tape to mark a start line and also to create a square at the other end of the room. Using small beanbags or balls, try to slide or roll them into the winner’s square.

Turn your living room into a long jump pit – minus the sand! Use a strip of masking tape to mark the start line. Then use more masking tape to record how far you manage to jump. But no run-ups – just stand at the start line and jump as far as you can! Challenge the people you live with to beat your effort!

Art

Wave your pens and pencils in the air, because this week (20–26 April) is National Stationery Week. So there’s no better time to get doodling. Here are some simple animal sketches. Grab your pens and pencils and see if you can copy them – no tracing allowed though!

Check out next week’s KA! World for more ideas to keep on learning!
