Imagine a police of!cer who’s magni cent at solving crimes!

Not only is this police of!cer brilliant at saving the day, but he’s also loved by everyone in the city he lives in. However, this police of!cer isn’t like any you’ve ever seen before. That’s because he also likes to fetch toys and loves having his belly rubbed! This police of!cer is Dog Man!

Once upon a time there was a police of!cer called Knight, and he owned a police dog called Greg. Then a terrible accident caused Knight and Greg to get mixed together into one person – Dog Man! Now Dog Man works to protect the city and serve the innocent, all while trying to impress his boss, Chief.

Dog Man’s greatest enemy is a supervillain cat called Petey. One day, Petey creates a clone of himself called Lil Petey so that he can get up to double the amount of mischief. However, something very unexpected happens – Dog Man and Lil Petey become friends! Lil Petey’s just a tiny kitten, so when another villain captures him, there’s no way that Lil Petey can escape on his own. Now, even though they really, really, really don’t like each other, Dog Man and Petey will have to team up to save their friend!

You can watch ‘Dog Man’ in cinemas now

Lil Petey was created by Petey to be a supervillain and help him cause trouble. What I love most about Lil Petey is that he goes against that. He makes friends with Dog Man and chooses not to be what Petey created him to be.

Although Dog Man is just a funny flm, it did make me think about how we all have choices to make. It might not be a decision between being a good guy or a supervillain, but every day we make choices about how we behave. It might be decisions such as forgiving a friend who’s said something mean or sharing your toys with your sibling!

Thankfully the Bible tells us exactly what to do when we’re faced with decisions that are big or small – trust God and ask him for help. If we listen to God, he’ll let us know the right choices to make.

II Don’t Want to Sing!

remember the !rst time I was asked to sing in a band at church. To be honest, I told the band leader that I wasn’t interested in getting involved! I thought people might laugh at me or tell me I wasn’t very good!

Eventually I was talked into giving it a go and I was really glad that I did. Although I didn’t really know what I was doing, everyone was so supportive. I was still really scared, but I knew that I was doing something good. I was using a gift that God had given me!

In this week’s Bible cartoon, one of the servants in Jesus’ story was too scared to use some coins that he’d been given. He was afraid that he’d get

in trouble if he didn’t use them well. So instead of using what he’d been given, he hid the coins away!

Just like the servant in Jesus’ story, we might want to hide away our gifts that God has given us. However, God wants us to use those gifts –whether that’s by helping with the tech team at church, teaching younger kids stories from the Bible, serving tea and biscuits or by doing something else entirely!

You might feel scared to use your gifts, just like I was scared to sing at the front of my church. However, when we use our skills, that makes God really happy. He loves it when we get involved because that shows him how much we love him!

What Are Your Gifts?

On each of the three coins below, write or draw a different way that you could use a gift that God has given you.

God Speaks to Ezekiel

When the Babylonians !rst invaded Jerusalem, they didn’t destroy everything – instead, they gave Judah a new king! They also brought the old king back to Babylonia with them, along with other important people! Five years later, a Jewish priest living in Babylonia called Ezekiel had a vision. As he was sitting by a river, Ezekiel saw a massive cloud appear in the sky. Inside that cloud, he saw four creatures that looked like humans, and these creatures had four faces and wings. Far above those creatures, Ezekiel saw a throne made out of gems and a glowing person was sitting on it. Ezekiel was seeing a vision of God – he was seeing how powerful and amazing God is! God spoke to Ezekiel, !lled him with the Holy Spirit and then gave him a mission. He was to tell his people that they were in trouble and must follow God again!

You might know the date that Valentine’s Day is on or what a heart symbol looks like. However, there are also plenty of things about Valentine’s Day we reckon you haven’t got stored in your noggin! So here are a couple of random facts that you de!nitely (and by !nitely, we mean don’t really) need to know.

Some people believe that Valentine’s Day was declared a holiday by King Henry VIII in 1537 when he was about to get married to Jane Seymour. Other people aren’t too sure that this is the actual reason why it became a holiday, but it de!nitely became popular during Tudor times. It was even mentioned in a couple of William Shakespeare’s plays!

One way of showing love to someone is by giving a Valentine’s Day card. The oldest printed Valentine’s Day card was made all the way back in 1797 by John Fairburn. Since then, Valentine’s Day cards have really caught on – now more than one billion cards are given out every year! To make your own card, check out page 11!

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

This Tuesday (11 February) is a special day, because it’s the 10th anniversary of International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS)!

Across the world, people will celebrate the incredible achievements and contributions that women and girls have made to the world of science.

How Did It Begin?

The United Nations is a worldwide organisation that aims to make the world a fairer place. In 2015, they set a goal to achieve this by focusing on gender equality in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths). They realised that there were many issues that were stopping women and girls from studying and working in STEM areas.

So they chose 11 February as a day to highlight the women who have made big contributions in STEM areas. They also want to inspire future generations to study a STEM subject.

Surprising Stats

We think that girls and boys are equally awesome, and studies show that girls do equally as well as boys in science tests at school. However, although there’s been some progress, girls are not always treated fairly.

Less than 35 per cent of people who complete a STEM university degree across the world are women.

Did you know?...

Women are typically given smaller grants (money) for their research than men.

Female researchers have shorter careers and often aren’t paid as much as their male colleagues.

Articles written by female researchers are less likely to be included in a scienti!c journal.

Female researchers are often not promoted as much as men even though they are just as good at their jobs.

However, despite the many challenges that women and girls face in STEM environments, they’re still breaking barriers and changing the world one invention at a time!

From Past to Present

Rosalind Franklin

Rosalind Franklin’s story is a great example of why IDWGS is so important. Rosalind was a brilliant British biophysicist who used X-ray techniques to take images of DNA. In 1952 she had a major breakthrough – Photo 51, the clearest image of DNA yet!

However, it’s believed her photo was taken without her knowledge by a colleague and shown to two other scientists. They used her image to correctly identify the structure of DNA and ended up winning a Nobel Prize!

Kiara Nirghin

Thankfully, since then, many people have agreed that Rosalind’s image and data played a signi!cant role in identifying the structure of DNA.

Kiara Nirghin is a tech entrepreneur and an award-winning AI (Arti!cial Intelligence) technologist. When Kiara was 16 years old, she saw the impact of climate change in her country and came up with an ingenious idea!

There was a drought in South Africa, so using molecules found in orange peel and oils in avocado skins, Kiara created a cheap super-absorbent material that helps water to stay in the soil.

Not only did her invention help farmers, but it won her the grand prize in the Google Science Fair competition. Since then, Kiara has passionately spoken about getting girls into the world of STEM and in 2019 she published her autobiography called Youth Revolution #BeTheChange

Eniola Shokunbi

Last year, 12-year-old Eniola developed a simple, yet effective, air !lter as part of her school project. Her class was set the task of improving school safety during a potential future pandemic. Eniola’s air !lter has been proven to eliminate more than 99 per cent of viruses that spread through the air!

The state of Connecticut (where she lives in the United States of America) was so impressed by the air !lters that they voted to spend $11.5 million to produce them for every school. Eniola is keen for other students to be involved in making the air !lter boxes as she believes it will inspire more students to become interested in STEM subjects.
