The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust

If you’re anything like me you find Shakespeare tricky to understand. It’s the old-fashioned language that I struggle with. I hear an actor recite their line, but I’m so busy trying to work out what they said that I miss the next bit altogether! Fortunately there are versions of Shakespeare’s work that make it much easier for people like us to understand. For example, CBeebies versions of Shakespeare plays use narrators who pop up between scenes to explain what’s going on. Some people find the Bible a bit tricky to understand too. The good news is there’s loads of stuff out there to help us understand it. For a start, Kids Alive! has a Bible cartoon on page 5 every week. In fact, we have a club called KA! JAM that’s designed to help you understand the Bible better – go to page 6 and join up today.

ave you ever been part of a group that has to do a project together? It’s not easy, is it? Especially when everyone thinks their idea is the best. Then there are those who disagree with every suggestion, some that just want to keep doing the same thing and others who don’t want to do anything! It’s easier when there’s a leader, captain or coach who gets a team working together, inspires people to get involved and helps them see that their task is super important, even when it’s not their first choice. This week’s cartoon Bible story is about two awesome leaders – Ezra and Nehemiah. Nehemiah inspired the Jews to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and finish them in super-quick time so that they

could live safely. Ezra and the Jewish leaders explained the Bible so well it helped the people learn about how to live God’s way. Nehemiah and Ezra also encouraged them to see things differently when they were feeling sad or bad. They pointed out that knowing God’s plan for their lives was a reason to be happy and would bring them closer to God. Great leaders are important and we need to thank God for them, whether they are leaders in families, government, schools, youth groups or churches. To be a leader isn’t easy and leaders aren’t perfect, but we still need to appreciate them and pray for them. Why don’t you write a card or draw a picture to thank a fab leader you know?

The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you.

How wonderful it is to know that God’s love for you is humongous! In Psalm 8, King David was amazed with just how much attention God gives to people. He values each and every one of us, so we can be confident that whatever anyone else says or how we may feel, we will always be special to God who created the whole universe.

Make a Mother’s Day Photo Frame Mother’s Day will be here soon (22 March, to be exact). So we thought you might like to make a personalised photo frame. Of course, this gift idea doesn’t have to be just for mums – you could make one for another special person in your life too. Giving a handmade gift is a great way to show someone you love them. Get creative, alive kids, it’ll make that special someone smile.

What You Need: • Card • Scissors • Ruler • Pencil • Photo

• Glitter • Dried fusilli pasta • Paints • Paintbrush • Glue

What To Do:

Choose a photo for your frame and trace around it on to the card. Draw a border 3cm around the photo shape to create a frame and cut it out with the scissors as illustrated. Cut another piece of card the same size as the first one – this will be your backing card. Stick your photo on to the backing card with glue. Stick dried fusilli pasta all around the frame as illustrated. Now for the really fun part! Decorate your frame with paints, glue and glitter! When it’s dry, stick it to the backing card so the window perfectly frames your photo. Cut a triangle out of card and stick one folded side to the back of the frame so it stands up on a desk.

It’s a Right Happiness can mean different things to different people, but one is thing we can probably all agree on t. wan all that feeling happy is something we al Day In fact, the founder of Internation is ess pin hap s of Happiness believe d gne pai so important that he cam for it to be a fundamental human right for everyone!

That’s where the idea for International Day of Happiness came from. A UN special adviser called Jayme Illien wanted there to be an international event where people think about and celebrate happiness for everyone.

Because I’m Happy According to the UN’s World Happiness Report the happiest country to live in is Finland, but before you start packing a bag and hopping on a plane, let’s look at some ways you can be happy closer to home. What makes you happy? Is it spending time playing board games with your family? Or maybe it’s chilling by yourself reading a good book. Do you love dancing? Or maybe you prefer painting. As we’ve already mentioned, happiness means different things to different people, but making time to do things that make you feel good is really important. No matter how busy you are, always try to find the time for yourself. At the same time, don’t worry if you don’t feel happy all the time. It’s completely normal to be unhappy sometimes. But if you’re feeling unhappy a lot of the time, talk to your parents, guardians, teachers or Sunday school leaders about how you’re feeling. Talking about any worries is another way to improve our happiness!

Near and Far As well as thinking about our own happiness on International Day of Happiness, the UN also wants people to think about happiness across the world. That might include your local community or people who live on the other side of the world to you. But what can we do to help others feel happier? Close to home, how about writing your parents or guardians a letter to show them how much you appreciate them? Or you could make sure the facilities in your community are clean and free from litter to make your neighbours happy. If you want to go the extra mile for people in other countries, you could raise money for a charity that helps people dealing with poverty or conflict.

Spread the WORD This is seven-year-old Trinity who’s a big fan of Kids Alive! She’s also had juvenile arthritis since she was two years old and wanted to tell us a bit more about it. ‘When I got arthritis everyone was shocked because they thought only old people got arthritis. What I have is called Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). Juvenile means young, idiopathic means they don’t know what causes it and arthritis means inflammation (swelling) of joints. ‘I used to really struggle to walk because my legs hurt so much. After the doctors examined me they realised I had JIA and found out that it was in my toes, ankles, knees, elbows, jaw and fingers! So the type of JIA I have is known as poly-JIA, because it affects lots of different joints in my body. ‘Because my mum had JIA too, the doctors realised what was wrong with me, and I could start treatment quickly. But for lots of children, finding out what is wrong with them takes much longer. ‘I have to have injections every week. They are horrible and it does hurt for a bit, but that’s better than being in pain all the time. I also have to do physio to strengthen my legs. Now I can walk, run, play and join in with most of the things my friends do. ‘My dad’s a scientist and has decided to use his skills to search for a cure for juvenile arthritis. He started a charity called Juvenile Arthritis Research (JAR Project), which as well as looking for a cure is also trying to raise awareness that children can get arthritis too. ‘Around one in every 1,000 children has JIA, so it’s important to know what signs and symptoms to look out for. So if you know someone who has painful joints or is struggling to do things they could before, such as walking or writing, it’s important they talk to a doctor.’
