Today (15 April) is World Art Day! It’s celebrated on this day, because 15 April is Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday –he’s one of the most famous artists of all time. It’s a celebration to encourage creativity and highlight how important art is in our world. Whether you consider yourself arty or not, get involved! Get your drawing or painting materials out and create some artwork yourself. Art isn’t just drawings and paintings, it also includes photography and sculpture. So how about taking some family portraits? Maybe you could grab some playdough or modelling clay and create something cool. You could even visit your local park, woods or beach to create some art using nature. Another way to celebrate is by researching some famous artists. Look up Vincent van Gogh and his famous Sunflowers, check out the pukka pop art that Andy Warhol created or look up the incredible work of Pablo Picasso. There are also colourful ceramic artist Clarice Cliff, photographer David Bailey and the sculptor Augusta Savage to discover. Or if you want to check out some more recent artists research Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and Banksy. And remember book illustrators and cartoonists are artists too, so when you’re reading your favourite books give the illustrations special attention!

You can also pop along to an art gallery near you to see what artistic works are on display right now. We hope all these artists inspire you to get creative too!

I love art! I enjoy looking at paintings, drawings, sculptures, photos and buildings. I also enjoy drawing – I’m not the best artist in the world, but I have great fun trying.

Growing up, I’d always have a pencil and paper with me. When you’ve got something to draw with you don’t need much else to keep you entertained. You have a blank canvas on which to let your imagination run wild. Just go with whatever comes into your mind: a footballer scoring a winning goal, a Leeny-Zeeny-Dweeby from the planet Zobb or a Zumba-dancing fairy keeping ft. At the beginning of time, God had a blank canvas and he let his imagination go wild. What an amazing job he did – he even imagined you! God wants you to use your imagination and enjoy being creative too. However you do it – drawing, writing, painting, singing, dancing, playing music – enjoy being creative this week!

elow are three statements and I want you to gure out which one is true.

• I once stood in a guard of honour for the Queen

• I once appeared in a TV film called ‘The Greatest Store in the World’

• I once climbed Mount Everest

I’ll reveal the truth in a mo. But rst, what made you pick the answer you chose? What would it take to convince you that I was telling the truth: a photo; a lm clip; other people who saw me doing it?

The truth is that I stood in a guard of honour for the Queen when she visited Plymouth in 1988. I did play in the Salvation Army band that appeared in The Greatest Store in the World, but the camera never panned around to me. And in 2011, I trekked to Everest Base Camp, but I never climbed to the

summit of Mount Everest.

In this week’s cartoon Bible story we read about Thomas who didn’t believe that Jesus was alive. Even though some of his pals told him they had seen him and spent time with him, he refused to accept that Jesus was alive unless he could actually see him and touch the wounds in his hands and side.

I hope you know that Jesus is alive. If not, what would it take to convince you? I don’t know if you’re willing to take my word for it, but I’m convinced that Jesus is alive! I’ve never actually seen him, but I’ve read about him in the Bible, spoken with him through prayer, seen him at work through other people and I’ve experienced him in some pretty amazing ways. I know my life is better having accepted that Jesus is alive and I’d love for you to know that too.

Naaman’s Slave Girl

2 Kings 5:1–1

What Happened?

Naaman, a successful commander in the Syrian army, had leprosy (a very bad skin condition). His wife had a slave – a young Jewish girl who had been captured. The girl told her mistress that Naaman would be healed if he went to see a Jewish prophet. Naaman listened, was healed, and promised to only worship God.

What Can We Learn?

In spite of her situation, the young girl chose to be kind and caring, instead of being angry and mean. She trusted God and took the opportunity to share her faith. In the end, her actions meant that Naaman was healed and became part of God’s family too.

Thoughts for You

How can you be like the young girl? Is there someone you know who’s not always nice? Can Jesus help them to change? Read Matthew 5:44 and pray that God will help them.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!

Saturn

When the Italian astronomer Galileo saw Saturn through a telescope in the 1600s, he thought he was looking at a planet with handles. Now, we know those ‘handles’ are the rings of Saturn. Saturn isn’t the only planet with rings, but Saturn’s rings are the most beautiful.

Astronomers believe there could be up to 1,000 rings, with gaps in between. The rings orbit Saturn like a million tiny moons. Together, they measure about 400,000 kilometres wide. That’s greater than the distance from the Earth to the Moon! However, the rings are only about 100 metres thick. Scientists think Saturn’s rings are made of chunks of ice or rocks. Some of the icy particles are too tiny to see, while others are the size of a bus!

Magic Breakfast’s Big Breakfast

Magic Breakfast is a charity that delivers free breakfasts to schoolchildren facing hunger every day. Having a healthy breakfast is crucial for children to concentrate during lessons, which means hungry children aren’t learning at their best. They need fuel to focus, learn and thrive.

With the cost of many things, such as food and electricity going up, more families are struggling to afford everything they need. There are even studies that show one in four children don’t have enough to eat. That’s why charities such as Magic Breakfast are so important.

Great Big Breakfast 2023

From Monday 17 to Sunday 30 April, Magic Breakfast will be celebrating their favourite meal of the day. You can join in by fundraising for the Great Big Breakfast at home, school or church.

At home – choose a date between 17 and 30 April to ask some guests over for breakfast. It can be anyone you like –friends, family or neighbours. Just make sure you ask your parents or carers rst! It’s free to sign up, but Magic Breakfast do ask for a £3 donation if your family is able to. You can raise extra money by asking your guests to donate a small amount too. A donation of £3 can provide two weeks of nutritious breakfasts for a schoolchild.

All of the above applies for a school breakfast event too. Talk to your teacher about holding an awareness or fundraising event. It could be for your class or your whole school. The more the merrier!

At church – why not ask your church leaders to hold a breakfast event too? It doesn’t matter where you have breakfast as long as you’re raising money, having fun and enjoying spending time together.

Healthy Breakfast Ideas

It’s always a good idea to have a healthy breakfast in the morning. So whatever time your family has in the morning, here are some ideas for morning fuel!

Busy Mornings

These ideas are perfect for busy mornings, but they’re also nutritious so they’ll help you to concentrate and learn at school.

With the help of your parents or carers, try making some overnight oats the night before school. All you need to do is mix the oats with milk, cover them and chill them in the fridge overnight. The next morning, they’ll be ready to tuck into – delish! To make them more tasty try adding mashed banana, cinnamon, berries or a healthier peanut butter!

There’s also nothing wrong with good old toast in the morning. Just make sure you use wholemeal bread and top your toast with healthier options, such as mashed avocado, banana, peanut butter or scrambled eggs (if you have a little more time).

Slow Mornings

When it’s the weekend or school holidays you might have time to be a little more adventurous with your breakfast.

Breakfast burritos are a great way to start the day. Just ll a wholemeal wrap with things such as eggs, avocado, tomatoes, beans or spinach. You could even try adding some different herbs or spices to mix things up a bit.

Smoothies are great for getting plenty of fruit into your body and there are loads of variations to try. Mango and banana is a great combination and so is strawberry and banana. Just chop up the fruit and chuck it in a blender with a splash of fruit juice until the mixture is smooth.

Prayerful Protest

On Friday 21 April, The Salvation Army is joining with other Christian groups for a No Faith in Fossil Fuels church service and a climate pilgrimage in London.

We know that most of our readers will be busy at school. However, if this is something you think your parents, carers, grown-up siblings or other family members would be interested in attending, they can meet at St John’s Church, Waterloo, London from 11am on Friday 21 April. The plan is to pray for leaders to take action and then walk to parliament to join thousands of people who will call on the United Kingdom government to stop new investment in fossil fuels. If your grown-ups plan to attend, ask them to email The Salvation Army’s Environmental Of ce at environment@salvationarmy.org.uk
